Youtube daily report Sep 10 2018

Here is the challenge

Finish it under 45 minutes.

Hey everybody, this is Randy Santel "Atlas" with Atlas & Zeus

Promotions and proud owner of

foodchallenges.com! Very very excited!

Today I'm going for overall win number

575 I'm back with these two!

We've got Naader "Freak Eating" over here

and then we've got our friend Raina! They

both did the pizza challenge a few days

ago in San Diego, and then this guy did

the sushi challenge with me, but we are

today in La Verne, California where at Mi

Ranchito, there's three locations around

the area and we are taking on their Big

One, Six Pound Burrito Challenge! Now

we've got 45 minutes to finish this

thing it looks delicious!

We each got the same thing I think the

meats there had to have two meats, we

went with chili verde and Chile Colorado

which the two meats are beef and pork,

with some delicious sounding sauce and

then this guy over here the two meats, he

has I think beef or pork and then

chicken, but yeah we've got 45 minutes

this thing is filled with other stuff

like rice, beans, veggies, and then it's

served wet topped with sour cream and

guacamole, we fail it's going to be about

twenty-five dollars but if we win we're

gonna get the $25.00 meals for free,

we'll get sweet t-shirts, and we'll be

added up on their Wall of Fame!

You guys ready? I'm ready! All right let's

get this challenge started!

All right if I win today I'm gonna be

joining both of these guys on the wall

of fame, they've already done the

challenge before this guy's actually

done it too but they wanted to collab

with me while in the area, and the record

for this thing is 9 minutes and 40

seconds by somebody we all know named

Raina, she's already got the video on her

channel be sure to check it out the

links down in the description, but we've

got 45 minutes! 1, 2, 3. . . Boom!

All right a long time since I've had a

burrito so this would be a fun one!

We're three minutes and 20 seconds in we

definitely know who's winning this

battle well ahead of a record pace going

for that nine minutes and 40 seconds, but

this burrito is freaking awesome so

we're enjoying it getting it all down!

We're just under we're at six and a half

minutes in she hashtags "raining is crazy"

a lot and she's definitely not wrong

keep it up doing good!

There we go!

Right that six minutes and 54 seconds so

for The Big One Burrito Challenge here at

Mi Ranchito. She did a very good job, definitely

not gonna do that, ah there

we go!

Yes but now we've got Naader and I over

here to finish, still have plenty of time

let's get it all down! Very good job

Raina!

Nine minutes and thirty seconds in she

hustled us over there beforehand, she

said she was gonna use utensils and then

she dug right in with her hands, we'll get

ours down!

There we go Randy!

12 minutes and 36 seconds for me

delicious, delicious burrito haven't done

a burrito challenge like I said in a long

long time, so had a few options here in

Southern California, and especially

around the Los Angeles area, but this one

looked the best and I was right it was

awesome but now we've got Naader "Freak Eating" over here about the finished it

Even use the big spoon for this! Very good job the Naader over here!

lets go Naader!

Around 15-16 minutes but

then we've got the champ over here, we've

got Raina be sure to check out her

channel, and then she's done this burrito

before, all the links are down in the

description but what do you think of it

Oh yeah, we both got the same

ingredients in ours a chili verde and

Chile Colorado with pork and beef but

what did you think of it? I the first

time I got Chile Colorado and I have to

say it tastes it gives much more flavor

variety than the shredded beef.

Oh yeah!

For winning we all three got our $25

burritos for free, we will all get sweet

t-shirts or I guess they've already got

some, so I'll be getting one and then

we'll all be added on to the wall of

fame! Thank you to Mi Ranchito in La Verne,

California! Awesome Big One Six

Pound Burrito Challenge, thank you guys

all for coming to watch thank you guys

for watching too!

Beloved Restaurant Chains That May Sadly Be Closing Soon - Duration: 4:54.

The restaurant industry is an insanely tough business, and for some old favorites, it's

gotten even tougher.

Younger diners are more interested in fast-casual places than the sit-down restaurants of their

parents' generation, and more people are just choosing to flex their own culinary muscles

and cook at home.

That means there's a ton of once-popular chains seeing their numbers sink farther and farther

into the red, and many are closing locations by the dozens.

Are your favorite restaurants on the chopping block?

Let's find out.

Ruby Tuesday

Casual, sit-down restaurant chain Ruby Tuesday, once a familiar staple in malls around the

country, hasn't been running in the black for a long time.

In August of 2017, the company reported a revenue drop of 12.8 percent, which is not

surprising given that it closed more than 100 stores the year prior.

It wasn't long after Ruby Tuesday announced the resignation of longtime CEO James "JJ"

Buettgen, that he was replaced by Jim Hyatt, former CEO of Church's Chicken.

The appointment was short-lived, and he was quickly ousted in December of that same year,

when the chain was sold to a private company, NRD Capital.

Even under new ownership, Ruby Tuesday continued to close restaurants, with around 400 locations

closing in the last decade as the company tried to figure out what it's going to take

to get customers back in seats.

"CHOCOLATE!"

Bob Evans

No road trip in America would be complete without a hearty breakfast at Bob Evans, but

in the future, travellers might find themselves needing to go somewhere else.

This side-of-the-highway favorite has instituted some major changes in recent years, all stemming

from its struggles to stay open.

By the end of 2016, Bob Evans closed a total of 27 underperforming restaurants in several

states, including in its native Ohio.

Then in January of 2017, the chain sold the remainder of its restaurants to a private

equity firm called Golden Gate Capital, who also owns Red Lobster and California Pizza

Kitchen.

While the new owners said they did not expect to close more locations, it still remains

to be seen whether or not their changes, such as revamped menus and fresher ingredients,

will impress customers.

TGI Friday's

Plenty of people look forward to Fridays, but maybe not in the way that TGI Friday's

would want.

"We need to talk.

Do you know what this is about?"

Sales for the chain dropped in 2014, 2015, 2016… you get the idea.

Even this once-popular hotspot isn't immune to the threat of fast-casual and the decline

of shopping malls.

In order to stay afloat and ideally become more profitable, the company is trying to

rebrand the itself as a trendy gastropub, redesigning locations to make the bar more

prominent, focusing on urban markets, and of course, offering endless appetizers on

a permanent basis.

IHOP

Remember when IHOP ran that campaign asking people to guess why the chain was temporarily

changing its name to IHOB?

Many assumed the "B" had something to do with "breakfast," until the company revealed it

was an effort to get people in the door for a burger.

The unfortunate reason for jumping on the burger bandwagon is that pancakes just aren't

selling like, well, hotcakes these days.

The company announced the closure of up to 40 of its restaurants in 2018, following up

on the 23 that closed the previous year.

Recently, IHOP has been depending on dinner menus, delivery, hot deals, and publicity

stunts to bring customers in, and while it's working, it might not be enough.

Same-store sales were up in May 2018, but traffic has declined for 10 straight quarters.

Qdoba

There's no shortage of fast casual burrito joints in the United States today.

Those who can't continuously impress get tossed out like yesterday's queso, and that unfortunately

seems to be happening with Qdoba.

The fast-casual Mexican chain started back in 1995, and despite closing numerous locations

over the years, it has continued to replace them with new eateries.

The chain axed 67 out of its 647 locations in 2013, but as of 2017, 729 restaurants were

in operation.

The company also opted for a tweak in its name, dropping the "Mexican Grill" and going

with "Mexican Eats" because according to VP of brand marketing David Craven,

"It's a bit more conversational and relatable to our core customer, and it doesn't position

the brand as being highfalutin."

"Yeeehaw!"

"Yeeeee haw!"

"Yeehaw."

How much that name change has helped is debatable.

Chain owner Jack in the Box sold to Apollo Global Management in March 2018, and shortly

after locations closed in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

Buffalo Wild Wings

There's no denying that chicken wings are an American favorite, but that increase in

popularity is proving to be a double-edged sword for Buffalo Wild Wings.

Remember taking high school economics, and learning about the principles of supply and

demand?

That's at work here.

With B-Dubs's main product, chicken wings, also being purchased by everyone from home

cooks to every pizza place in the country, that's sent the price of wings skyrocketing.

That means the company is paying more and making less, and it hasn't been good for the

bottom line.

That's why half-price wings Tuesday ended, and that's why the chain is also pushing its

boneless wings instead.

Buffalo Wild Wings is hoping the better price point might help stop the bleeding and save

the locations that are left, and after Arby's invested a whopping $2.9 billion in the ailing

chain, you can count on seeing some big changes that might help improve the steadily failing

numbers.

These Islands Don't Exist - Duration: 7:30.

Of motion.

This site is super cool for those of you interested in cinematography and color in movies.

What it does is it calculates the average color per frame of a film and stack them from top

to bottom.

This way you are able to see how color changes throughout a movie.

You can search by director, title, genre, and year.

Andrew Stanton directed the movie Finding Nemo and Wall-E. But let's focus on Finding Nemo.

If we put it in here we can notice that there's a lot more blue and green in Finding Nemo which makes a lot of sense.

But let's go to the Harry Potter series.

We can see how the color changed from the first movie to the last.

Is it fascinating or is it

KNOT.

That is a pun by the wonderful Hannah Canetti.

Let's all give her a round of applause.

Great work, Hannah. We're all proud of you.

Now I was supposed to have some rope or twine.

Or something here to demonstrate how to do some knots.

But I don't. So you can go to animatedknots.com to find out how and if you don't have string

that's fine. There's something else that you can play with.

Which AHH it's so heavy. Is the latest Curiosity Box.

This is box number 9. If you don't know what the Curiosity Box is

Michael, Kevin, and I make this thing every quarter

And it's a box full of learning

Of curiosity. Of science toys. Physics based things.

t-shirts. Books. Games.

All fun, interesting, brain-feeding stuff.

And what I'm really excited about and I know Michael and Kevin are as well

is that a portion of the proceeds from every box goes to Alzheimer's research

And so far we've been able to donate over $100,000

because of this box. This is actually our two year anniversary box.

So we did a whole new branding on it.

Has these big Roman numerals right there that say what number box it is.

And the whole thing's just very sleek. Kind of almost matte black

finish to it with a little bit of texture on it.

I'm very excited about it. I can't show you what's in the box because that would ruin it.

But it's very cool. If you wanna get your own, curiositybox.com

There'll be a link down there as well links to all the other DONGs

that we talked about and a playlist right here full of them.

So yeah. I hope you like this box.

We spend a lot of time putting it together and we design

all the products besides the books because those are written by other people.

But they are exclusive to us in a very unique way

which you'll find out if you get this baby.

So yeah it should be shipping soon or by the time this video comes out it might already be.

Anyways that is my sales pitch on it. It really is something that we care about and we do make it ourselves.

It's not like a brand deal or anything. It's ours. We create it and hopefully you enjoy it.

Alright. I love you. And as always, thanks for watching.

A History of MAC Cosmetics x Cirque du Soleil - Makeup Artist Fun Facts | #CirqueMakeup 🎨💄🎪 - Duration: 3:20.

Caitlin is a senior artist on the MAC Pro Team,

did I get that right? [GLOBAL SENIOR ARTIST]

- That was awesome. - Ok good, all right.

- You nailed it. - Yes, awesome.

- You are good at this.

- Tell me a little bit about why MAC and Cirque du Soleil work so well together,

I mean other than they're both amazing Canadian companies.

- Yes, yes so we have Canada in common.

- Yeah. - And we also started the same year, 1984.

- I did not know that. - Isn't that crazy?

- That's really special. - I know so it was kind of meant to be.

- Talk about makeup in a show, why is it so important, it adds such a layer.

- Because the makeup is part of your character

so makeup gives you a great deal of emotion because it's your face.

- Yes, there's nothing more emotive than that.

- No.

- And it brings it to another level, right, just that level of color and art.

- You don't need much to make a statement with makeup,

you don't need much and it just gives you that little "zhuzh".

- It does, I mean I feel like I'm a different person.

- Right? - Tell me about, you went to go see O.

- Yes.

- I'm sure do you pay attention to the makeup

when you're a watching a show? - You must.

- It kind of changed my life. - Yeah.

- Because the theatre, the art, the drama, the costumes,

everything, I was just blown away.

- It is one of those things you want to take everybody

- Yes. - to see it because you're not gonna believe

- cause you want to share - this Cirque show, you're not gonna,

visually the makeup, the costumes, the tricks that they can do,

it's beyond any show that you normally see.

- No, and like it's a circus, no.

- No, it's not, there's no elephants.

- It's an experience, it's an experience together

- It's an emotional experience, you don't understand.

- And it's so hard to explain. - I want to take you to a show.

- Let's go. Ok. - Let's do it, all right. Awesome.

Thanks for coming on.

- Bye, we're going on a show. - Bye, we're going on a show.

[FUN FACTS]

I'm here with Patrizia who has been a makeup artist here

at Cirque du Soleil for 8 years?

- That's right. [MAKEUP ARTIST]

- So you've beat a lot of faces up in here.

- Yes, yes I did yeah.

So 8 years and it's been quite a ride actually.

So mainly our job here at Cirque we're a makeup artist.

A lot of people don't know this but we have to teach the artists their makeup

because everyone has to do their own makeup.

- That's got to be really hard because these artists are, you know,

they're training in the gym, they want to be gymnasts

and they want to do all of these amazing tricks

but they don't necessarily go to school to say makeup

- No that's right. - So you have to teach that all to them.

- Absolutely. Actually some of them have never actually held

a brush in their hands before.

But you know what, after a few sessions

we give them about 4 to 6 sessions

2-hour sessions and they eventually learn how to do their makeup

as complex as it can be, as many steps as it can take,

they will eventually learn it and we all have our different techniques

for teaching them as well so we're about 6 or 8 makeup artists on our team

and we all have our different techniques and they all eventually learn it.

The Shady Side of Netflix - Duration: 5:10.

There's no denying Netflix has changed the way we watch television, but as with any world-conquering

corporation, there's some less-than-ideal stuff going on behind the scenes.

Your favorite source of binge-worthy content may feel like a digital friend, but make no

mistake: the streaming giant doesn't always have your best interests in mind.

Here's a quick look at the shady side of Netflix.

Review switcheroo

Sorry, but Netflix doesn't care what you really think about its buddy-cop orc epic Bright,

or your desperate demand for another season of cake fails on Nailed It!

"Your Trump looks like the stress has really gotten to him."

In case you're out of the loop, as of August 2018, Netflix has not only killed its written

user review feature, they've also deleted every old user review written in the last

decade, in a snap, like a more thorough Thanos.

Netflix tells CNET it got rid of written reviews because fewer people were using them, they

were desktop-only, and written reviews never really factored into recommendations anyway.

Only the current thumbs-up or thumbs-down system and the old "one-to-five stars" rating

system ever really influenced what's offered up to users, with a complicated algorithm

behind it all deducing the kind of content you like.

Bottom line: It's your viewing behavior, not your opinions, that Netflix really latches

onto.

The conspiracy-minded may also see this move as a way to hide negative reviews of Netflix

Originals.

Regardless, if you enjoyed reading other user reviews or writing your own, you're out of

luck.

Netflix giveth, and Netflix taketh away.

Subtitle shadiness

In 2012, Netflix was caught using pirated, fan-made subtitles for some of its Finnish

content.

As file-sharing news site TorrentFreak notes, unauthorized subtitles are considered a violation

of copyright, and individuals running sites that offer them as downloads are subject to

fines and possible jail time.

One of the shows Netflix was caught using so-called "fansubs" with was the sci-fi series

Andromeda, which was pulled from the service while Netflix investigated how they ended

up in use, complete with an on-screen credit to the fans responsible!

Caption concerns

In 2011, the National Association of the Deaf sued Netflix for not offering closed-captions

with most of their movies and TV shows.

According to CNET, the lawsuit was a last resort after years of appeals to Netflix asking

them to make their content easily accessible to the roughly 36 million Americans who are

either hard of hearing or deaf.

By 2018, things were getting better on that front, but viewers started tweeting that the

quality of some Netflix captioning was so bad that it ruined entire shows.

As the Telegraph reports, it started when one subscriber tweeted about how horrible

the captions for Queer Eye were, with altered language, censored profanity, and huge chunks

of dialogue missing.

Netflix responded with promises to investigate and to do better in the future, but the Guardian

says their poor job at closed captioning has become a symbol for the need to change media

accessibility laws.

After all, it's not just about captioning: When Netflix released Marvel's Daredevil in

2015, it initially failed to offer up a descriptive audio track for the blind, which is a weird

omission, considering it's a show about a blind superhero.

Prices up, selection down

Price hikes are the way of the world, and Netflix is no different.

In early 2018, the world's most valuable media company announced prices would soon rise again.

"That is gonna be quite a burden on whoever's password I'm using."

USA Today reported that it's definitely not going to be the last time customers see their

rates increase, either, but here's the kicker: You're getting fewer choices for that higher

rate.

Quartz and Cinemablend reports reveal that selection has dropped significantly in recent

years, with available movies down to around 4,000 from 6,500 in 2016.

Bottom line?

Netflix is charging you more and giving you less.

Binge enablers

Netflix essentially invented binge-watching, and the streaming king pays a staggering amount

of money to make sure binge-worthy content sticks around on the service.

Vulture says Netflix is known for forking over as much as $750,000 per episode for some

of the biggest shows on offer, such as Mad Men and Breaking Bad.

Not only is Netflix willing to spend an absurd amount of money to keep you hooked on high-quality

content, the streamer even tried encouraging kids to binge by offering them rewards in

the form of collectible digital patches.

Netflix started testing the program on select titles in March 2018, but soon pulled the

plug.

Kids were awarded patches for watching certain shows, but collecting the patches didn't unlock

any new content or otherwise change the streaming experience.

London School of Economics professor Sonia Livingstone says this gamification of TV isn't

exactly healthy.

Livingstone told the Telegraph,

"It's not clear that their innovation is in children's best interests, and given parental

concerns about screen time, is unlikely to be welcomed by parents."

Netflix put a stop to this shadiness, but who knows what the future will hold.

Guess we'll just have to watch and find out.

Incredible Ways People Cheat On Exams - Duration: 8:41.

1/ Few of us relish the idea of exam time, and although some people think our students

are tested too early and too stringently, most have a dim view of cheating.

But it does happen, and students' attitudes towards cheating may surprise you.

In a survey by US News and World Report, 51% of high school students do not consider it

wrong.

And even more shocking, is the fact that 95% of those students interviewed said that teachers

had not detected their cheating.

2/ Today, we've decided we need to dive a little more deeply into this subject and

find out what's really going on, in this episode of The Infographics Show, Incredible

Ways People Cheat On Exams.

3/ Before we run through the list of creative ways some of these students are getting away

with cheating, let's first look at some more statistics to see how bad the situation

with cheating on exams really is.

The Josephson Institute Center for Youth Ethics surveyed 43,000 high school students in public

and private schools.

59% of high school students admitted to cheating on a test during the last year, and 34% self-reported

doing it more than two times.

And one out of three high school students admitted that they used the Internet to plagiarize

an assignment.

4/ Cheating isn't only prevalent in high schools.

Underhanded tactics are also happening in college and graduate schools.

A survey of over 63,700 US undergraduate students and 9,250 graduate students, from the years

2002 to 2005, was conducted by Donald McCabe of Rutgers University, and it revealed more

startling facts.

Here are just a few: 36% of undergraduates and 24% of graduate students admit to "copying

a few sentences from Internet sources without footnoting it"; 14% of students and 7% of

graduate students admitted to "fabricating or falsifying a bibliography"; 7% of students

report self-copying materials "almost word for word from a written source without citation";

And 7% self report "turning in work done by another."

So what's going on?

Let's take a look at some of the creative ways these students are getting away with

it.

5/ 1.

A manicure can be a very important thing for a young lady if she likes to have neat, tidy

nails.

As it happens, it can also be very useful at exam time.

It is actually possible to apply tiny handwriting or little sticky notes underneath long manicured

nails.

It's also easy to erase everything using your fingers if you think you're about to

get caught.

British newspaper The Sun reported in 2017 on a Reddit user post entitled "Nailed the

exam."

The user showed how an unnamed student had carefully written tiny math formulas on minuscule

pieces of paper before sticking them on the underside of her nails.

Creative right?

Maybe yes, but she got little praise with most Reddit users who were quicker to comment

on the student's laziness, claiming the formulas could have been easily learnt.

One person wrote: "And just think, the amount of time and effort to painstakingly attach

those little bitty cheat-sheets could have gone into actually learning the material."

6/ 2.

Modern pens come in a variety of different shapes and sizes, and some have internal non-transparent

plastic or metal areas that create a perfect environment for secret notes.

You can take the pen cartridge out during the exam and then extract a note with the

necessary information to copy.

And pens in China have gone a step further with the introduction of technology.

In Sichuan province, 40 students were suspected of using a high-tech pen for cheating.

The pen worked like a mini phone and would send test questions back to another location,

and answers would be sent back to the cheaters via in-ear receivers.

7/ 3.

Calculators are one of the most common cheating tools.

If you use a pencil, you can write notes on the back of a calculator and they are almost

invisible unless you look at the calculator very closely, or better still, hold it at

an angle so the light reflects off of it.

And other students have been known to be more cunning by using the calculator memory.

A calculator, after all, is a mini computer, and you can hide formulas and test answers

for some period of time.

With some calculators, you can write a program the day before the exam, and under the program

function, type in formulas or cheat notes that can be accessed during the exams.

But lots of teachers now check the programs on calculators, so students have become more

cunning by putting their notes under the Vars or Variables button in one of the 10 Strings

listed.

When notes are placed in different sections of the calculator, it's much harder for

the teacher to locate them.

8/ 4.

Since we're talking about technology, let's not forget modern digital watches, which can

fully replace smartphones and offer all sorts of cheating options.

They have apps, instant messaging, and Internet access, so when a student is subtle, they

can solve a test in a matter of minutes by using their watch.

And then there are Google Glasses that hook into other devices.

We found a story about students at a medical college in Thailand who were caught using

spy cameras linked to smartwatches to cheat during exams.

They planned to use wireless spy cams embedded in eyeglasses to capture exam questions before

transmitting them to associates elsewhere and receiving responses back through linked

smartwatches.

But the plot was foiled, and Arthit Ourairat, the rector of Rangsit University, posted pictures

of the high-tech cheating equipment on his Facebook page.

9/ 5.

Finally, we also found a rather persuasive cheating method used by some students that

involves psyching the teacher out.

What do we mean by that?

As soon as an exam paper is returned, the student makes corrections that are similar

to the teacher's corrections and presents them as mistakes made by the teachers.

Some teachers, especially less experienced ones, get nervous because they can't be

sure they have not overlooked or misinterpreted something.

The teacher may then immediately agree to improve the grade without looking at what

is there and rechecking where the amendments were.

It is not a pleasant method of cheating, and it takes a very cheeky student to use this

underhanded approach.

10/ One country that comes up repeatedly in search results when you look at cheating on

exams is India.

This is due to some past cheating epidemics that have been exposed over the years.

In 2015, British news agency the BBC reported that around 300 people were arrested in the

Indian state of Bihar for blatant cheating on school exams.

Incredibly, dozens of parents and friends of students were photographed climbing school

walls to pass answers through the classroom windows, and some of the classrooms were as

high as four stories above the ground.

Many of those arrested were parents, and at least 750 students were expelled.

11/ State Education Minister PK Shahi asked, "Three to four people helping a single student

would mean that there is a total of six to seven million people helping students cheat.

Is it the responsibility of the government alone to manage such a huge number of people

and to conduct a 100% free and fair examination?"

Then this year the BBC reported again on the situation.

It said that the authorities in the same state in India have now asked students not to wear

shoes or socks in order to stop them from being able to sneak notes with answers into

the exam hall and cheating during exams.

12/ The rule came into effect on February 21 of this year when roughly 1.8 million 15-year-olds

took part in their final class 10 test school exam.

The crackdown on cheating by authorities has seen the state of Bihar's pass rate fall from

more than 70% in 2014 and 2015 to barely 50%.

13/ Cheating certainly seems to be prevalent, but in reality it's stealing the work of

another student who has put in the time to learn the material.

And getting a good grade you didn't actually earn can also damage the curve for the entire

class and leave the students who are struggling with exams believing that there is something

wrong with them for not understanding.

14/ So, have you cheated on exams and are there other methods you know of that we didn't

mention?

Turns Out "The Lorax" Is Probably a Real Monkey - Duration: 5:40.

Thanks to Skillshare for supporting this episode of SciShow.

[INTRO ♪]

When Dr. Seuss's The Lorax came out in 1971, it quickly took the world by storm.

The plight of all the animals that lost their homes when the greedy Once-ler cut down all the Truffula trees—and the trees' comically mustached champion, the Lorax—

resonated deeply with many worldwide, inspiring an entire generation to care about the environment.

But many scientists think Seuss's book wasn't just a fable.

The Lorax and its precious truffula trees are real, and they're now facing the completely non-fictional threat of extinction.

In September of 1970, Theodor Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, was trying to write a book about conservation, but he felt blocked.

So, he traveled to Kenya to clear his head.

That's where he likely first saw the patas monkey and witnessed its close relationship with whistling thorn acacia trees.

Patas monkeys are kinda goofy-looking primates that wander African savannahs in groups.

Unlike other monkeys, they're quite comfortable on the ground, so if they feel threatened, they generally just run rather than scamper up a nearby tree.

And that's probably because they can book it at a whopping 55 kilometers per hour—fast enough to outpace most predators.

That speed is thanks to their super long legs, which evolved, in part, because of their fondness for acacia trees.

Acacias are a common but somewhat spread out food resource, so the monkeys have evolved to walk great distances—kind of like us.

And that allows them to rely on the trees for more than three-quarters of their diet.

Part of what they rely on is the gum from the tree itself, which is rich in minerals like calcium, iron, and manganese.

But a lot of their diet actually comes from the ants that live inside the large, swollen thorns that make the tree look so Seussian.

The ants help discourage large herbivores from eating the trees, but patas monkeys love them.

These treat-filled thorns are too tough for smaller species of monkey to break open.

And that works out just fine for the patas monkey, which could get all the protein it needs from the ants alone.

And because the trees and their ants are available all year, they're a more stable, reliable food source than the fruits that other monkeys prize.

The only catch is that it takes a lot of gum and ants to feed the somewhat large monkeys—

males weigh in at around 12.5 kilograms, while females are about 6.5.

So the monkeys can only make their diet work if there are lots of acacias to feed from—hence those long limbs that let them move quickly between patchy groves.

Normally, there are plenty of these trees for the monkeys to find—

or, at least, there were plenty of them back in 1970, when Geisel arrived in Kenya and found the inspiration he needed to write The Lorax.

It's not 100% certain that he based the Lorax and their Truffula trees on patas monkeys and their favorite acacias,

but researchers have pointed out several lines of evidence that support the idea.

There's the coincidence of timing, of course—

that he found his muse in an area of Kenya where the trees and monkeys were a common sight.

And the trees in the book do look awfully similar to whistling thorn acacias,

down to the way they stand somewhat alone in patches surrounded by a grassy landscape.

Oh, and the Lorax sure looks a lot like a patas monkey.

When researchers ran a facial similarity analysis, the Lorax looked more like the patas monkey than like the most similar Dr. Seuss character, or even like other monkeys.

Unfortunately, real life seems to be repeating the book's story.

When Giesel visited the Laikipia plateau in Kenya for inspiration, whistling thorn acacia trees were all over the place.

When he wrote about the trees disappearing, that was an imagined future.

But in the decades since, they've declined dramatically.

That's in part because another tree—one that's a lot less palatable—is out-competing the acacias.

The reasons behind this hostile takeover are complex.

One problem is that human use of these landscapes has shifted the type and intensity of animals consuming plants.

In reserves like the one studied, the trees are subject to higher concentrations of larger consumers like elephants.

Their voracious appetites can spell doom for small trees and seedlings.

And those animals are also relying more heavily on the trees in recent years because climate-change-driven droughts have reduced the amount of grass available.

But getting rid of these big herbivores isn't the answer, either.

When scientists tried removing big herbivores from areas in Kenya for a 2014 study, seedling survival of the whistling thorn acacia plummeted because smaller animals that eat them, like mice, flourished.

And scientists are becoming increasingly concerned about the effects of wildfires, which are happening more often because of increasing temperatures and decreasing rainfall.

When the land burns, the acacias often lose their symbiotic ants, which makes them even more vulnerable to herbivores.

So there's a lot of debate about the best path forward to ensure the long-term survival of these vital trees in the face of climate change.

In the meantime, their decline is affecting their primate loraxes.

Patas monkeys aren't considered endangered yet,

but their populations have been declining and their range has been contracting in recent decades, likely in response to the disappearing trees.

And if the acacia trees disappear from Kenya, then the monkeys will, too.

Which means Geisel's final message in The Lorax couldn't be more fitting:

"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."

Thanks for watching this episode of SciShow, which is sponsored by Skillshare.

Earth Science: Crash Course History of Science #20 - Duration: 13:44.

From 1600 to 1800, European physics and chemistry went through revolutions that made them quantitative,

or numbers-based.

Meanwhile, biology remained with natural history, and stuck with observation-based knowledge.

But what about the study of the earth?

In this field, natural philosophers were asking questions like, what's up with fossils?

Are they the remains of extinct organisms?

Or are they so-called "sports of nature"—rocks that just happen to look like living things

but don't mean anything?

And most importantly, how old is… everything?

I gotta say, as disciplines of science go, this one has pretty much everything awesome

in it.

Vast eons?

Check.

Mega floods and supervolcanoes?

Got those!

Dinosaurs?

Uh, huh!

A hunt for living mastodons?

Buddy, you know it.

Geology, paleontology, oceanography, meteorology, and others—the earth sciences are fascinating,

and so is their history.

Let's rock!

[OPENING MUSIC PLAYS]

If you're looking for the foundations of

geology, one place to start is with mining.

Archaeologists have shown, for example, that indigenous populations around the Great Lakes

mined and used the copper near modern-day Lake Superior for over six thousand years.

And in Europe, mining took off along with colonization.

In the sixteenth century, colonial empires exploited the precious metals of Central and

South America, relying on the geological knowledge and technical skills of indigenous communities—not

to mention their labor.

But, despite gathering a lot of new data about the Earth in this way, natural philosophers

kept banging their heads against one question: how can we reconstruct the earth's history,

or geohistory?

No one could confidently know the age of the earth before the discovery of radioactivity

and the development of radiometric dating in the early twentieth century.

Today, by the way, we think the earth is around 4.543 billion years old.

But since at least the seventeenth century, people have compared layers of rock and declared

them younger or older, depending on their positions relative to other layers.

This was a qualitative, or value-based practice: it was hard to date rocks just by looking

at them.

But this didn't stop people from trying.

In seventeenth-century Europe, it was commonplace to believe that the age of the earth and the

age of human species were about the same.

So to know the age of the earth, historians tried to create a quantitative chronology

of human history.

This meant comparing all known ancient sources—such as texts from China, Greece, or Babylonia—as

well as things like the records of eclipses and comets.

All these events were placed into a detailed chronology: a linear narrative that ran from

the creation of the universe to the present.

In 1654, Bishop James Ussher—a scholar and the top religious leader of Ireland—calculated

the age of the earth to be about six thousand years old, based on textual evidence from

the bible.

Other historians reached different conclusions and argued over the reliability of different

sources, but in general they reached a date for the beginning of time somewhere around

4000 BCE.

By the late seventeenth century, some European naturalists, such as polymath Robert Hooke,

argued that natural objects, like fossils, should also be used like historical texts to

shed light on early human environments.

For example, many believed that the biblical Flood had scattered organic remains globally,

which explained why we can find seashells on the tops of mountains.

This attention to fossils would set the stage for new theories of organic development, such

as those of Charles Darwin.

Between Hooke and Darwin, several eighteenth-century

French thinkers played a critical role in speculating about fossils and finding ways

to calculate the age of the earth.

These were the "Transformist" natural historians who developed proto-evolutionary

theories.

The Comte de Buffon, for example, argued that the earth was progressively

cooling.

According to Buffon, during this cooling process, the earth underwent phases or "epochs,"

which were roughly parallel with the six Biblical days of Creation from the book of Genesis.

And since humans appeared only in the seventh and final epoch, Buffon's history of the

earth was mostly pre-human—which was a totally new idea!

To determine the age of the earth, Buffon conducted what might be described as "cooling"

experiments.

He timed the rate at which heated balls of different sizes and materials cooled down.

Publicly, Buffon estimated the earth was around seventy-five thousand years old.

But privately, based on his experiments, he speculated that it was up to ten million

years old!

So, although most European geologists in the 1700s were devout Christians, they found—like

Buffon—that the Genesis narrative could be read as more of a metaphor that complemented,

rather than contradicted, scientific evidence.

This allowed Christian thinkers to come to terms with a vast, pre-human history.

Still, fossils remained a questionable form

of evidence for understanding the history of Earth.

Did they represent the remains of pre-human worlds, or were those creatures still roaming

wild spaces somewhere?

Georges Cuvier thought he had the answer.

Help us out, ThoughtBubble:

Cuvier argued that each epoch of earth history had its own distinctive flora and fauna.

And these epochs were separated by global catastrophes such as tsunamis, meteorites,

or earthquakes.

Life forms did not persist after the catastrophes, he thought.

They went extinct with the end of their worlds.

We call this theory catastrophism.

And according to it, fossils reveal a linear sequence, which can be used to reconstruct

the earth's past.

This wasn't a new idea: in 1696, for example, William Whiston published A New Theory of

the Earth from its Original to the Consummation of All Things.

And in it, he attempted to explain the history of earth in terms of catastrophes, too.

Like, Whiston thought that a comet hitting earth must have caused the Flood of Noah.

What Cuvier did differently was amass fossil evidence of changes in organisms.

Studying the geology of central France, Cuvier noticed gaps where the fossils would simply

disappear, only for new kinds of fossils to appear a little bit higher up, in new layers

of rock.

He recognized these gaps as extinction events.

To make things easier, Cuvier decided to focus on really big bones—

mastodon and mammoth skeletons.

He figured these animals would be hard to miss if they were still roaming the earth.

(Spoiler: they were, in fact, extinct.)

But Cuvier compared the teeth of elephants and those of other animals like them.

And in doing that, he established that African and Indian elephants are different species,

and that mammoths were not the same as either of them.

Thanks ThoughtBubble.

Now, how did Cuvier get all of these fossils?

Well, the new Revolutionary government in Paris secured Cuvier a position at the

Museum of Natural History, which gave him the power to establish a global fossil delivery

service for other natural philosophers.

So, those big mastodon fossils that he studied came from North America.

And it's worth pointing out that, because of that, Cuvier became fascinated with Native

American ideas about creation and extinction.

He went out of his way to buy fossils from tribes such as the Iroquois, Shawnee, and

Lenape to learn what they thought about these old, gigantic bones in the ground.

Cuvier couldn't have come up with new theories about fossils—or even collected so many

fossils—without the help of many indigenous knowledge makers.

So by 1800 or so, geologists had reached a consensus on some wild ideas: the earth had

undergone gradual change over an incredible amount of time before the appearance of

humans.

And Earth's history was punctuated by sudden episodes of violent change.

Life had either adapted to new environments or gone extinct.

And so the fossil record was progressive: wimpy little trilobites died out, and humans

came into the story at the end, ready to build robot musicians.

But not everybody loved Cuvier's theories.

Scottish geologist Charles Lyell instead argued for a slow, "steady-state" theory of geological

change that would become known as uniformitarianism.

He famously had two specific bones to pick with Cuvier.

First, Lyell thought the French had relied too much on catastrophes to explain geological

history.

He argued that observable geological processes—like erosion and deposition caused by wind, rivers,

rain, or the occasional volcanic eruption—were the only explanations that geologists should

consider reasonable or scientific.

Second, Lyell argued that extinctions were spread evenly across geological time—not

clustered together in mass-extinction events.

This steady extinction rate was balanced, he thought, by the steady creation of new

species, according to global climate conditions.

So, for Lyell, geohistory wasn't linear, but cyclical and ... uniform.

It pretty much worked the same in each epoch.

Lyell's big book, Principles of Geology, published from 1830 to 1833, became a Principia

for earth scientists.

And I should note here that we've been saying "Prince-uh-pee-uh"

for the whole History of Science so far

But, one of our writers is in the room and has told us it's "Prin-KIP-ee-uh."

In 'Principles of Geography" he argued that the earth is immensely old, and that, as he put it, "the present is

the key to the past."

The debate between catastrophism and uniformitarianism would go on for a long time.

But while Lyell's position on extinctions was dismissed by older geologists as too extreme,

his emphasis on the power of gradual change inspired many younger scientists.

One of them was Charles Darwin, who read Lyell's books and later became his good friend.

Lyell could never quite figure out how fossils and living organisms were related, but—

like, for now, get out of here, Chuck!

We're gonna get to you in a couple episodes.

Another influence on Darwin, in the realm

of fossil collecting, was Oxford geologist William Buckland.

Buckland led trips to caverns and abandoned mines, where he found remains like cave bear

bones from the Pleistocene.

For evidence of even more ancient life, we turn to English paleontologist Mary Anning.

Anning walked the beaches after storms to find and excavate fossils, which she then

sold, mostly to Buckland.

In 1811, she even found a spectacularly well-preserved ichthyosaur.

Anning was a keen observer and talented nature writer.

An 1830 painting of "ancient Dorset" based on her work brings to life an entire Jurassic…

world (Universal Studios, please don't sue me!), filled with marine and flying reptiles.

In the vision of Buckland and Anning, the reptilian past was separated from the modern

world by the Flood, after which humans were created.

The new theories about the earth, circa 1800, all required what is perhaps the most important

idea of earth science: "deep time," or "geological time."

This is the notion that, before humans, the earth had already been around for an unimaginably

long time.

And this great expanse of time is, like human history, full of sudden events and patterns

that persist over epochs.

So, deep time implies that geohistory can be reconstructed in the same way that historians

reconstruct the human past.

Except, instead of relying on vases, ruins, and letters, geo-historians rely on fossils,

volcanoes, and rocks.

This epistemic mode of thinking about the

earth's history emerged thanks to the technē of industrializing Europe.

And so the earth sciences became more regular as professions in the late 1700s and early

1800s.

In industrializing nations, governments and landowners started investing in geological

surveys and mining academies.

In these academies, earth scientists were trained to generate new ways to satisfy a

world increasingly dependent on one mineral resource, coal.

New visual technologies for geological mapping, and a new system for tracking rock groupings

across vast distances, emerged from the works of Abraham Gottlob Werner and his students

at the mining academy in Freiberg, Germany, in the 1770s.

In Britain, mineral surveyors and civil engineers, such as William Smith and John Farey, started

using fossils to improve the accuracy of their geological maps.

This technique soon became standard practice.

Smith was also one of the first people to use a thematic map, a map showing something

about the earth other than its shape, to classify different rocks across Britain.

And he was one of the first to use fossils to map rock formations for practical ends,

like civil engineering and mineral prospecting.

His maps were very useful to the geologists reconstructing the earth's history: they

helped fossil hunters arrange their finds according to rock strata and thus age.

Innovations created by Smith and others like him set off a wave of geological exploration

around the world, backed by governments and industries.

And, by the early 1800s, the industrial world was gobbling up coal at an unprecedented pace…

Quick note that this episode would not have been possible without the expert advice of

Gustave Lester, a Ph.D

candidate in the Department of the History of Science at Harvard University.

Republicans Think Trump Is DELUSIONAL About Their Midterm Chances - Duration: 4:36.

Donald Trump continues to tell us that there's not going to be a blue wave in this year's

midterms, there's going to be a red wave.

A red wave.

Republicans are going to win bigger than ever because Trump's economy is just kicking ass

all over the place.

So yeah, Republicans are in for a great ride in this year's midterms, so sayeth President

Trump.

However, Republicans have admitted that they're going to lose.

In fact, the party itself is projecting that they're going to lose roughly 45 seats in

the US House of Representatives alone and now there's even concern that they could actually

lose the Senate.

People like Ted Cruz in very tight races that they could easily lose.

That's gonna cost them.

Other embattled Republican Senators across the country, not looking so great in their

reelection bids either.

So the Republican party itself fully admits that we're going to lose and we might lose

even more than we think we're going to lose, but Trump doesn't think that.

Now, GOP officials are worried about the fact that the President has become, "Delusional

about the party's chances in this year's mid-term elections."

They're saying that he's delusional about what's going to happen in the mid-terms and

there's several theories as to why this is.

Recently, on CNN, they talked about this and they mentioned the fact that it could be because

Donald Trump has: one, either repeated the lies so many times to himself that he even

started to believe it, or two, and this is actually far more likely, the people that

he surrounds himself with are not willing to tell him the truth about how bad the situation

is for Republicans.

Obviously, tuning in to Fox News all day, which we know the President does, is not going

to give him accurate information about the Republican's Party chances in 2016, or 2018,

excuse me.

They're not out there saying that a blue wave is coming, that Republicans are in trouble.

No.

They're telling us, everything is fine, Republicans are great, don't worry about the mid-terms

this year.

Trump's saying the same thing on Twitter.

But behind closed doors at those official GOP headquarters, they are terrified because

not only are they going to lose seats but then, when they do, they've gotta deal with

the wrath of a President who easily becomes unhinged at the slightest provocation, who's

absolutely going to lose his mind when those returns start coming in, in November.

Unfortunately for the Republican Party, there is nothing they can do about it.

They could try to tell him the truth.

They could tell his aides, "Hey, can you please make him stop doing this?"

But none of that is going to work.

The President has bought into his own lie and nothing, probably not even the actual

returns that come back on election day this year, are going to convince him that he's

been wrong about it.

1-The magic of papaya. The papaya is a magic tree that is at

evil and female (hermaphrodite). When you cut it or when you go through it

a rod it changes sex: it becomes bad  female and gives fruits in abundance ..

That's how the Lord wanted it and nothing of the papaya is useless. He pushes

everywhere without even the favor of being human. It's rightly called the tree

magic or tree of life and everyone should  to have it in his yard or in his garden.

It is both food and medicine.  My father told me that this tree has a soul

and I think that's true. All its parts have healing properties and

Nutrients. The hollow stems is rich in vitamins A, B and C, calcium, phosphate, iron,

in protein and sugar. When you give a decoction of the hollow stem to a child

who pee in bed, he is quickly cured of his evil. When you cut anything

facilitates the digestion of proteins (meat , eggs, milk, beans, etc.). The white sap

and the seeds you reject are excellent wormers. In 1989, at DIVO in Côte d'Ivoire,

by my channel, the Lord healed one of my 17-year-old students,

second S class that was suffering from worms for more than 10 years. Indeed, long

dried papaya that has been transformed in powder and over a week he took in

a sweet porridge, a tablespoonful powder every morning on an empty stomach. the

after seven days of treatment, all worms were neutralized and over three days

he only drank worms to be finally definitely cured 10 years of parasites.

It was a happy event for him  and his family. Glory was given to God for

this healing. We must not neglect the simple things around us and who

can save lives, even in situations desperate.

GIVE THIS TO YOUR husband AT NIGHT, AND HE WILL HEAT !!! - Duration: 4:54.

GIVE THIS TO YOUR MARY AT NIGHT, AND GO TO HEAT !!!

1-The magic of papaya. The papaya is a magic tree that is at

the image of our society. He can be wrong, or female or still be at once

evil and female (hermaphrodite).

When you cut anything

what place of papaya, he is crying of his white sap rich in papain, enzyme that

facilitates the digestion of proteins (meat , eggs, milk, beans, etc.). The white sap

and the seeds you reject are excellent wormers. In 1989, at DIVO in Côte d'Ivoire,

by my channel, the Lord healed one of my 17-year-old students,

second S class that was suffering from worms for more than 10 years. Indeed, long

to him were coming out everywhere at any time  and what did I do? I took the seeds

dried papaya that has been transformed in powder and over a week he took in

a sweet porridge, a tablespoonful powder every morning on an empty stomach. the

after seven days of treatment, all worms were neutralized and over three days

he only drank worms to be finally definitely cured 10 years of parasites.

It was a happy event for him  and his family. Glory was given to God for

this healing. We must not neglect the simple things around us and who

can save lives, even in situations desperate.

Duo M/P talks #1 - Ralph van Raat - On William Bolcom - Duration: 2:42.

You mentioned earlier William Bolcom.

You've had some personal

and musical encounters with him.

What's your experience with his music

and also with him as a person?

Yes, I think his music

and the person are very similar

and that's what I like very much.

I think William Bolcom is someone, is a model

of a composer who has been able to

attract large audiences.

In America he is very popular,

also because he was one

of the first people to rediscover Ragtime

and saw it as a very important

source for composition.

You know always composers

have been looking for - let's say -

national traits, for example: so Bartok

with folk music and something that's

part of their own DNA and they could use

to express their identity.

And for Bolcom that was not so much as

complex serial or music. It was the

discovery of Ragtime and he was one of

the people who really rediscovered

Ragtime. Art Tatum and these composers.

So he thought this is a fantastic basis

for American music. For a revival of

American music. For American composers,

young composers. So he embraced the

Ragtime-language and combined it with,

yeah, with more contemporary influences

from modernism and avant-garde and made

his very own personal, unique style, which

is more challenging than playing Ragtime.

But it's not as complex as Pierre Boulez.

So it makes - again it's

like his music is always like a movie.

It combines all these

elements and you can - You know,

sometimes you're situated in

downtown Harlem you know and and then

suddenly you see a flashback of

Paris you know in the 1950s.

Of the IRCAM and

the avant-garde movement there.

It all comes together - the whole music history

comes together and it's when you talk to

him he is like that. He's open-minded.

He's like a sponge absorbing what

you say and immediately giving his own

feedback to it.

Very spontanous and

that's what you hear his music.

It's like somebody talking to you.

Like somebody talking about his music,

influences, about his passion about his

fascination for music. And that's what you hear.

You hear the spontaneity of his character.

And it's fantastic to work with him.

Ashley Jacobs Says She Wants 'a Redemption Story' on Southern Charm as She's Seen with Ex Thomas Rav - Duration: 5:27.

Ashley Jacobs is hopeful that her time on Southern Charm isn't over.  "I've heard talks that I'm coming back and then I haven't heard anything

I haven't heard anything directly. It's still up in the air," Jacobs, 33, told PEOPLE about her possible return to the Bravo reality series for its sixth season

"They haven't asked me and they haven't said no to me. Someone had told me people who aren't under full time cast members, they wait until the last minute, so maybe that's it? They don't owe that to me, of course," she said

Following the season 5 finale in July, Jacobs confirmed that she and Southern Charm star Thomas Ravenel were still together despite rumors that their reality TV romance was on the rocks

Weeks later, the couple had broken up after more than a year together, she revealed in a teary Instagram Live

But they may have already reconciled. In an Instagram post shared by the pair's friend, Jason Jolly, on Sunday night, he congratulated Jacobs and Ravenel by sharing a smiling photo taken during (what appears to be) a double date

In the snap, Ravenel gives a thumb's up.  "Great to be with this couple on their special day! Congrats and best wishes!" wrote Jolly

Last month, Ravenel — who is still under investigation following sexual assault claims levied against him — also announced that he will not appear in season 6

"I'm not doing the show anymore," he tweeted. "In the contract they have the right to fictionalize your story

They took advantage of me. I decided I've got too much to lose and informed them I'm not coming back

"  Although her ex said he won't be appearing on the upcoming season, Jacobs — who moved to Charleston, South Carolina, from her hometown of Montecito, California, to be with Ravenel — hopes that she has a second shot on Southern Charm

"I wish they had the decency to contact me and give me a chance. Because I would like to have a redemption story, the same way Kathryn [Dennis] did

I'm not going to fight and I'm not going to play dirty. I'm going to smile and be nice

I never had the chance to do that on the show because I was so wrapped up in Thomas' drama

I was the villain, but people tuned in to watch. I'd like to give viewers the chance to see another side of me," she explained

Jacobs and Ravenel's ex Dennis feuded throughout season 5. But weeks after the show ended, Jacobs apologized to Dennis in a public note

Now, she'd like another chance at rectifying their relationship.  "I'm happy to go there and say to Kathyryn, 'I'm sorry

I know exactly what you went through.' I'm 33 and this is hard, I can't imagine what this is like at 21

Not to kiss her ass but I'm trying to say, 'Hey, I get it.' And the people who were on the reunion — they were more concerned about me than anything

Cameron, Chelsea, even Craig. They're concerned about me. So I think they'd be open to me," she said

Still, Dennis is uncertain if the cast would welcome her back.  "At the same time, I'm nervous

Are they going to be nice to me? Is it worth it? I don't know. I can't really cross that bridge until it comes

But I'm in a good place now. It's hard when your relationship is in the public eye

It's a little frightening, and a little more vulnerable. And I'm sensitive," she explained

"I'm quite critical of myself already but when I see bad things I'm like, 'Shoot, darn, that's not how I am

' And I want to go on the show again to show people who I really am."  If another season on Southern Charm isn't in her future, Jacobs is open to appearing on another popular reality TV franchise: The Bachelor

"I would totally do The Bachelor. It would be so fun, Now that I know what to expect, I'm like, Why not?" said Jacobs

"You only get to live once. Make memories, make stories, and enjoy the adventure of it

Why Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Will Be Better Than The Original [KOTOR'S SOAPBOX] - Duration: 7:06.

The Nintendo Switch is quickly gaining a reputation as the remaster platform of choice for game

developers.

Do you have an aging gem of a game that you want to squeeze a few more sales out of?

Simply release it on the Switch, and bask in renewed interest that this handheld console

provides.

The device has a growing player base, but, let's face it, there haven't been a lot

of original games released this year.

Thus, perhaps more so than any previous Nintendo console, this is becoming a safe haven for

games that never really got a fair shake the first time around.

Some of these remasters have been more worthwhile than others, but a new announcement has me

very excited.

You can keep your Skyrims and your Pokkens – the game that best deserves a fresh try

on the Switch is Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles.

Welcome to the first episode of Kotor's Soapbox, where I blather on endlessly about

whatever nonsense I think is relevant.

Apologies for not being as good at voice over as my partner, but I hope you'll stick with

me regardless.

With that said, let's talk about the GameCube, and why Crystal Chronicles will actually be

better on the Switch than on its original console.

Nintendo wanted to try something bold with the GameCube.

In an attempt to link together the company's handheld and home console devices, it was

possible to run a cable from a Gameboy Advance into the Gamecube's controller port.

This meant the Gameboy Advance could be used as a controller, but it also allowed for a

second screen for certain games.

Yes, all the way back with the GameCube, Nintendo was already trying to push the basic gameplay

that led the Wii U to falter.

But the GameCube could actually do more than the Wii U, as up to four Gameboys could be

plugged in, which meant that four players could each have their own private second screen.

Developers found some really interesting ways to play around with this.

My favourite game that uses the technology is Pac Man VS, which I only managed to finally

pick up a few years ago at a retro game event.

One player plays a relatively traditional game of Pac Man on a gameboy's screen, while

up to three other players watch the TV screen, and use Gamecube controllers to play as the

ghosts.

The ghosts can't see where PacMan is, as their view is limited, so everyone has to

work together.

I think it's on the 3DS now, and if you haven't you should definitely check it out.

The big problem with these games is that you need a lot of different resources in order

to play.

For the record, I'm using the term "resource" loosely here.

You need a Gamecube and a copy of the game, but for each player you also need a Gameboy

Advance and a link cable.

This means that many people never really got to enjoy these games to their fullest in their

heyday, simply because of the cost incurred by filling up a full four player setup.

But there's also another resource that you need.

In order to get the most out of these games, you need friends.

That's where my gaming experiences always fall down.

Finaly Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles is not as deep and story driven as many games that

bear the Final Fantasy name.

The concept is simplified to its barest minimum – essentially, there is a maguffin out there

that needs collecting, so up to four people head out to go get it.

It's also not turn-based, which is a blessed mercy.

Anyone who's ever played a four-player Pokemon battle (also possible with this technology)

will know that waiting for all four people to pick a move is about as much fun as falling

asleep on a bed of nails.

But Crystal Chronicles does feature a lot of elements that try to make the gameplay

feel immersive.

Each player can customize their character, picking from a series of different character

models, and also choosing a backstory and family profession.

There's a lot more depth in this than I ever really expected, and in my opinion, it's

the best part of the game.

Unfortunately, this title struggles because of the nature of multiplayer games.

It's essentially trying to be both a party game and a roleplaying game, and these don't

always mesh.

When I first got the game, I played it with my brother and sisters.

We all built our characters, went off on a quest, then squabbled for a while, and gave

up.

Later, I played with a friend.

We built all new characters and started from the beginning, so that my friend could get

up to speed on what was going on.

We got a little further, and even managed to see the credits play, as they do after

every few levels because of reasons.

Then, my friend went home.

The next time I played, it was with some different friends.

So, we started all over again, made characters, and played through the same few levels.

The next time I played, I was at university.

My housemates and I made new characters and played from the start.

Do you see a pattern here?

The problem with Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is not only that it requires friends to play

with, but that it requires the same group of players to make things fun.

Because in completing a cycle within the game, characters level up.

But suddenly, you've got characters that are more powerful, alongside characters that

are brand new.

It's hard to roleplay consistently when you're playing with different people each

time.

And hey, maybe that's just my problem.

Maybe if you've got the same group of friends that you play with regularly, this isn't

an issue.

Certainly, when it works, this game can feel like a great interpretation of playing Dungeons

and Dragons in a game, as everyone wanders around together, slaying monsters and trading

items.

But this is why I'm so pleased with the idea of a remaster.

This game never really got its due.

It released on the GameCube, to a limited audience.

That audience was made even smaller by the fact that it required players to buy a lot

of Nintendo stuff to get the full experience.

Then, there were those like myself, who were eager to play the game, but who had a different

group of friends around every time we played it.

Perhaps the moral of the story is that you should find three friends and stick with them

for life.

The Switch release of this game will overcome this fundamental problem.

You can play online, with friends that aren't, of necessity, forced to spend time in the

same room.

At least, I hope this game has multiplayer.

There hasn't been official confirmation yet, but that seems like the easiest way to

get around the limitations of the hardware.

Suddenly, everyone has their own TV screen for item management.

It's also the only way I could imagine this working on a PlayStation 4.

Unless it's going to use some kind of abysmal split-screen system that just makes things

more complicated than they need to be.

Of course, this doesn't solve the other big problem I had as a teenager with Crystal

Chronicles.

The game does require you to play nice with others.

With all the inventory management, it's a very tedious game to play if one or more

people simply can't make up their minds about equipment, or item purchases in shops,

or even which direction to take as the party explores the land.

I have two sisters and a brother, and as kids, we all had our own Gameboys.

We saved up hard to make this possible, and you'd think we'd want to get the most

out of them by playing together.

But Crystal Chronicles is a game that requires a certain amount of cooperation, and that

wasn't really our style.

Things fell apart when we couldn't agree on what to do next.

Something tells me the new remaster won't have a fix for this.

As appealing as the idea may be, no games studio can patch out sibling rivalry.

Just be warned.

This is one of those games that can put a real dent on a friendship if not everyone

is willing to play fair.

CBB housemates horrified as vicious crowd chants to 'get Sally out' - Daily News - Duration: 2:49.

Celebrity Big Brother housemates were left horrified this evening as they heard the vicious crowd's boos

As host Emma Willis read out each of the names of the housemates, Sally Morgan was booed loudly

The stars were stunned as they later heard chanting to "get Sally out".   Some, including Ryan Thomas , looked bewildered as Sally said: "They really booed, didn't they?"  The crowd's negative reaction to Sally may be as a result of her furious row with Hardeep Singh Kohli last week, just before his eviction

Sally and Hardeep became embroiled in a furious racism row after she suggested putting talcum powder on him to make him look ill

This led Hardeep to point out that her comments could be construed as racist - leading to rest of the house to hit out at Hardeep

He later also pointed out her previous comments about his turban, which she referred to as the "thingy on his head" that could act as a bandage

Read More Celebrity Big Brother 2018 Final  "It was a series of comments that you made," he said to a tearful Sally

"I apologise if i made you upset."  Ryan then lashed out at Hardeep, who he accused of trying to "ruin Sally's life"

Later, Sally fled to the Diary Room as she insisted that she hadn't meant her words in any way

She told Big Brother: "I may not have a degree but I know what racism is. you've only got to look at this man the wrong way

"  Hardeep also took some time in the Diary Room to voice his opinion.  "I couldn't bite my tongue and I suppose I spoke out of turn," he said

"I'm not doing myself any favours. I think I possibly p***ed everyone off in the house

Emmerdale fans gobsmacked as Rebecca's fate is revealed - and it's very bizarre - Daily News - Duration: 3:20.

Rebecca White was revealed to be alive this evening, despite her evil nephew previously bashing her over the head, kidnapping her and then seeming to finally kill her

But it wasn't just her being alive that left viewers gobsmacked - her situation was equally as odd

At the end of tonight's episode, viewers finally saw Rebecca alive but not quite well as she lay tied to a bed screaming

"Please help me! Please let me out!" Rebecca was heard crying out as a nurse entered a yellow room with a small glass of pills

"No I don't need any more drugs," she said when the nurse neared her. "I'm not mad

"  "You've had a head injury and you get confused sometimes," the nurse said.  Straining against her restraints, Rebecca said: "Look, I've told you - my nephew tried to kill me, he killed our whole family

"  "It was a tragic accident," the nurse sighed as she paused pouring the water. "Nobody's fault

"  She then reveals that "he", presumably Lachlan, was paying her "a lot of money" to help her rest and recover

Read More Emmerdale  Rebecca was then forced to swallow some pills as the nurse said sinisterly: "You don't want to end up in an institution, do you? Then you won't be able to be with your son

"  After swallowing the pills, Rebecca called after her: "He's lying, you have to believe me! Please, please - you have to help me! He's a murderer!"  Actress Emily Head, who plays Rebecca, revealed that she had to be very careful when going in to film at Emmerdale that she wasn't spotted after her supposed on-screen death

She said: "Any time I was coming into work I was trying to make sure no one saw me come into the building so it didn't give the game away then

Or if I had to get a taxi into work I'd have to lie and say that I was just coming in for an interview

"The last couple of weeks, particularly, have been particularly hard keeping it under wraps

So I'm very, very happy that it's finally aired and that I can get back to normal

"   *Emmerdale returns tomorrow for an hour-long episode at 7pm on ITV

Closure Letter | Spoken Word breakup - Duration: 3:58.

There was such a romance to our story that it brought sadness those who got the news and

not exclusively friends our loved ones, but

The people who watched us share kisses in the hallways

the smile widening across your face when I walked your direction and the giddiness that

manifests in sweet laughter when we engaged in conversations

They never thought we could break up and frankly neither, did I

I

Feel sadness for the people we let down

for the fantasies we dreamt of:

our imagined wedding, our imagined baby, and our imagined home

You were me good to me

You celebrated me with every I loved you and decorated me with tenderness with the "baby I miss you"

After we broke up neither one of us will need to betray the fantasies we had so we never committed to anyone else

yes, we'd recite and I love you to others but

We both knew whose faces we dreamt of when we were left into ourselves

When you lie down in bed

I'm the one you thought of and when I missed a tender touch

You're the one who cleared

Every time I close my eyes. I see you

your smile your

Laughter your love for me

Those things that will put me to bed or most nights I

Really tried to hold on

And now here I am back in new love good love

But I feel guilt for having found someone new

And not because I want you still but the imagined wedding the imagined babies

the imagined home

They all felt too real too good to let go of I

Hope you found a new good love how

I'm sure you did a good man like you

intoxicate

What we had it was late. It was the love that

most dreamed to feel

I'm sorry for not having held on

I'm sorry my happy one we've done

I don't mean to insult

You
