Diligently rehearsing for the panel
This is what Otakon was like.
The volunteers at the Cheritz Booth "Hello~"
It would be great if you looked at the camera once in awhile as the user is sitting here.
Hello.
So we just had the panel yesterday, which is Saturday and today is Sunday.
And we kinda didn't have enough time to go through everything we have prepared.
Which is really sad that we weren't able to do the Q&A that we have posted on twitter so we would like to go through it now and just post it separately
We really hope you see you soon in some way…
Or even at Otakon next year again…. Maybe. I don't know.
We went through the rigorous process of really filtering out for the best questions ever.
First one!
Hahaha
-We all had dinner together last night and it was… -We ate a lot.
We ate a lot of really good food.
We have an autographing event after this so we might get hungry again.
The surprising this is that we ate so much last night but I was so hungry when I woke up this morning
Good food usually digests faster
Did you eat yet?
Don't forget to eat
When it comes to getting into character, it's easy to get into character when I'm reading the lines in the recording booth.
To prepare my acting voice,
I usually play tennis and drink every day, but I drink a little less before I record.
I drink a little less before I start.
I usually head out to the recording studio early because Seoul's traffic is terrible.
V is a character with a very sensitive mind.
So the day before I record as V, I always read poetry before I go to sleep at night...
(HA) Poetry?
-(It's the first time I hear about that…) -Huuuuuh~~♬
Yes! I also listen to some classical music.
-Um… can I say something off the record? -He's making this up.
Sleeping well is the best way to maintain your voice. My voice sounds the best when I had a good sleep. That's the best way.
And read poetry while you eat?
-I'm sorry haha -Read poetry while you sleep? hmm~
I just remembered one dilemma I always felt.
Drinking a lot of water helps a lot. It's important to drink a lot of water to maintain your voice.
I drink a lot of water even during recording sessions.
But that also makes you need to go to the bathroom more frequently.
So I feel a dilemma when it comes to drinking a lot of water.
-After you drink all the water you can use the bottle for…. -HAHAHA
Um… we should edit this out
Let the world know who we really are~
Ah, so it took over 60 hours to record the casual story, deep story, and the secret 1,2.
We thought that would be the most we record and the rest won't be that much because it is just DLC and additional recording but we were wrong.
Including the DLCs, didn't everyone record around 10 to 12 hours each?
-Yeah I think... -Probably we did.
I think I recorded over 20 hours including the song….
-You win! -Thank you very much~
100 hours… I think we recorded over 100 hours all together.
So I think it would've been more difficult for the director...
For the voice actors, it's just individual recording sessions.
But for the director, one person… or maybe two or three persons took care of every recording schedule so it must've been tough...
Good for them! (Hahahahaha)
Everyone was very busy so it was hard to arrange schedules.
-Thank you for the hard work. -Thank you for your hard work also.
-Don't we have to work more? -Yes, we do.
At least now you have more know-how.
Personally, I am curious too.
Ah… I already had endings decided for each character.
But I only thought about one ending.
The story of 707, and Saeran was not in the original plan.
In the 707 story, I didn't plan to have Vanderwood originally.
But it happened while I was writing the script.
So it's a little bit of both.
Call the police!
In English…. Call the cop! Yeah!
Um… Personally… I don't give help that I can't be responsible for till the end.
-...That's my philosophy. -That's deep.
It might not be the best for that person for you to reach out without much thought.
I hope the person who asked this… didn't have their hopes high.
As we always say, "fantasy is fantasy, real is real."
If you get a message like this...
You can just call the police.
-Call the cyber investigation department... -Blocked!!!
-The reporting system of today is very streamlined. -I guess we can call this the gap between the cyber world and real life?
For this… I think we should hear from Sujin Kang…
What?
-Thinking of the wife that left... -She didn't leave me
Imagining her leaving… Imagination..! Imagination!
-Yeah Yeah that would be disastrous. -Same for me...
There were a lot of very emotional scenes like shivering with fear but it didn't feel awkward.
It doesn't feel awkward, but getting into it or recreating it again is not as easy.
I have felt those kinds of emotions before and it was very helpful when I was getting into character.
My experiences, personal experiences or… studying those emotions. Those kinds of stuff helped a lot.
The hard part is creating a specific tone. As an actor,
I want to act more gushy emotional scenes, and after it's done, there is a sense of accomplishment.
So in a sense, those kinds of scenes are always welcomed.
There is a certain cruelty in the destiny of an actor.
When my father passed away 4 years ago.
I couldn't stop crying. I was overwhelmed by sadness and couldn't control myself.
One of my colleagues hugged me and asked if I was okay. I said "I'm okay" while I'm crying.
And I had a passing thought...
-"Wow that deliver was pretty good" -Yeah there are times like that.
In the midst of feeling sad, I thought "oh, I should use this as a reference next time."
There were moments like...
I got married very recently
You know, there are times we get into an argument. And she tells me stuff like..
In the middle of arguing… "You sound like you're acting!"
-Oh wow... -That's a bit messed up
Um… but then I think, "Do I?" and sometimes it ends up deescalating the situation. It's kinda funny when that happens.
When I'm in a dramatic situation and feel sad or down,
-I also think "Oh I like this feeling of sadness. I better write it down" -Yes, there are times you just go with the feeling
-I see. -Yes, I think we have that in common
Uh.. that would be
V. Designing V was very difficult.
For other characters... I added some realistic traits.
For example, Yoosung really likes video games.
And Jumin is a bit clumsy.
But I set V as an unrealistic character.
In V route… especially when he has a very emotional conversation with Rika.
I get nervous when I have to write for V.
Sigh~ I'm bad at laughing.
He is better at making people laugh than laughing!
Bingo~!
I think... everyone else can do this similarly but coincidentally,
I was cast as "Annoying Orange". When I do a laugh as him it's like...
"taking a poop hahahahaha"
Does the line have to be…?
Yes! It was always laughing like that after saying that line.
Really impressive! Please don't edit this out.
Can you do a laugh as V?
Can you hear it? For V it's like… um… like...um… yeah...
...Don't ask me to do stuff like that...
But people asked you to...
I don't know what to do... You'll be able to listen to it as much as you want if you play the V route to the end.
Just smile at the camera
(Smile~ *^0^* )
I wanted it to sound friendly.
I wanted to sound like a real friend
rather than just a character in a game.
I actually had a lot of fun recording.
It feels like having a phone call constantly.
So I actually borrowed some mannerisms from actresses while recording.
I wasn't trying to sound like a female character.
I just wanted to give a more unique feeling.
How about the grown-up Yoosung?
It was much easier. I just tried to be more natural. As natural as possible.
-It was closer to your actual voice. -Yes yes, it was.
I had a different mindset
when I first started making games
and when I made Mystic Messenger.
For the first two games,
it was hard because I never had experience as a professional writer,.
And I thought if I wrote in the style of a messenger, I would be able to write something more fun and longer.
That's why I decided to make a messenger game.
But as I make it...
The volume of the game got bigger and bigger.
I wrote text messages
Email jokes
And phone conversations.
Eventually, I ending up
writing the visual novel parts that I was trying to avoid.
It was my first mobile game and I was worried.
Because usually, gamers play their games on their PC with higher quality speakersand monitors and that's what they are...
Used to. But for mobile games...
there are still gamers like that but it also has to engage people that usually don't play video games as much.
So I thought what would be the most familiar format for them and it was the messenger format.
And I'm glad...
because the reaction is… very positive.
-Oh and I heard yesterday that you majored in computer science... -Yes. Yes. I did.
And did you write all of this… as the scriptwriter?
Yes. When I was first making Dandelion,
I planned on hiring a writer to write a script for the plot I came up with.
But we didn't have the budget!
We didn't have the budget so I wrote all of it. At that point…
I've just returned to Korea from the States so my Korean wasn't that good.
If you look at the Cheritz website from then, the Korean on it…. wasn't great
But after writing all these scenarios in Korean, now I can write well in Korean but I forgot a lot of English.
Also, I found out that... I have a little bit of talent as a writer.
I don't think it's "a little bit" of talent
As we've talked about, Its a massive script with over 100 hours of recording.
-It's amazing that one person wrote it. -Oh... I actually got some help. -Also, the quality of the lines are very high.
I wouldn't be able to do it without the help of the scenario team... I would like to thank the scenario team!
When the voice actors read lines, we get this sense of "this line sounds natural, or unnatural"
Well, there's a person…
-That changed the lines a lot… -I'd say improvised rather than changed. -But the lines felt very natural and didn't require modification
I thought "Woah I heard this person was an engineer..." and I was pleasantly surprised.
Have you ever thought of writing for a show? like a web series or something like that.
I already have a lot of fun making games. The best part of making a game is...
That… you get input from the users… it's very interactive.
For dramas, it's just a one-way communication but games are more interactive.
-You're right. -Yes.That's the joy of making games...
-You're almost like the J. R. R. Tolkien. of video games -Gosh;;;
-An epic story like the Lord of the Rings... -Next Question!
Thank you.
As you can see, I'm a bit hyper… I live like I have a loose screw or something.
You'd already know if you played the game but V..!
Talks a lot!
-So he is like... -It's you!
Exactly you! Just YOU!
I usually say things without much thought. But V is a soft-spoken person that talks a lot with logic
So he is like... You wrote it. So you must know.
Oh yeah, it was tough to write.
There were times I thought "why does he talk in such a complicated way?" and slowly get into character.
I think using the frustration I felt from acting as V helped me
get into...
character more...
Hahahahaha
Don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining!
-Well, I think my colleagues spent a lot of time with me so they already know… -Very serious
I assume you'd know too after spending couple days with me.
I'm a very light-hearted person…
A bit shallow I'd say...
And yeah… It's a bit more comfortable acting as a jokester...
I've never been a very serious person.
Even in very serious situations, I always think how can I make a joke...
Anyways, I felt comfortable acting as both.
But it was a bit easier actin as a jokester...
Looking back to how I am these days,
I've been more of a calm person lately.
I think I was always more of a 'tsundere' in the past.
As I told you before in the interview.
During my teen years...
when I was more rebellious and edgy, I was more like Ray.
Yeah it would be a problem if I was still like that.
So from Ray to the good ending Saeran?
I'm in the midst of becoming like good ending Saeran.
-Even Saeran is a very touchy person before the good ending. -He is
-I think he is similar to me in that way. -So you have a little bit of everyone.
To put simply, I'm slightly unstable. (hahahaha)
Unstable is the conclusion.
Um, being able to pour in all the knowledge I have in my head and all the emotion in my heart...
-Just like giving birth to a game~ -Yeah~
-Thank you! -What a quote! Giving birth to a game...
A child that brings profit!
If you work for someone else, you only get to do what they ask you to do.
But there's a lot of fields to work on while running a game company.
I think the best part is that I get to write a lot of stuff and get a lot of different opportunities .
I plan on doing this till I'm 70.
When you're 70… people around your age that play the game will be...
Let's get old together.
The elderly population at that point will be... there will be video games for the elderly also.
People will be getting old with the game industry and there will be games for the elderly.
You can become the leader of the elderly industry 40 years later.
Games for the elderly...
Are there video games for the elderly?
No, right? Dang, I think its a gre… great business opportunity.
-I'll fulfill the needs of that market -Everyone stay tuned for the game of the elderly
I think I'm good at everything except for acting...
Like what?
Ah... I meant sometimes I feel like I'm not good at acting.
Why are you being humble all of a sudden?
There are moments you feel like that but I think this question is rather asking what do you like to do outside of acting.
I like to write a lot and I wanted to be a writer when I was younger.
I like to do that, I like to read, and I just like staying home in general rather than traveling.
-So a homebody... -Yup
I think you'll reach enlightenment soon.
Maybe he should join the scenario team...
No… I'm not good enough to get paid for it.
I like eating a lot.
Oh yeah, yesterday…. when you saw all the steaks… I have never seen him that happy.
Yeah, the people that invited us to the event bought us steak and it was...
Heaven!
It was heavenly… like… I was so happy. I really like eating.
Thank you, Otakon!
Hahaha yes. Thank you for the meal.
Thank you for the meal.
I think there's a lot of different genres to be pioneered
I think it's great to make what you want, even if it's in an unfamiliar format
And pioneering a new genre by doing that
It's important to know yourself and instead of listening to what others say,
follow your own heart and do what you can do best.
That's what I believe. So,
Have courage!
That's my conclusion.
I hope my success inspires more people to create.
Does having real-life dating experience and relationship experience help creating a female-oriented dating sim?
I think it depends on the target audience
For example...
If you want to service the game to people that don't date, it helps if you don't date
Dating experiences are helpful if you want to service the game to people who date
I hope I'm not being rude but...
Next question!
Um for me… of course Ray route was...
It wasn't always fun!
It wasn't always fun but… I felt sorry seeing him go through a bottomless pit...
As you may remember, there were times I got mad at him...
"Why does he live like that? I don't get it"
"We need to send him to a military camp. Let's send him there and educate him"
"He shouldn't live like that" I would scold him like that while recording
But also cry because I felt sorry for him
It was painful! I remember feeling his pain and sympathizing with him rather than having fun
That… cheesy romantic...
Oh! Valentine! Valentine!
Yes, I usually don't do that kind of acting… I cringed a little bit while recording.
But when I was done I thought "Ah~ that was a new experience"
Maybe I'm a bit weird… That was the most fun I had.
Uh… a… Cat?
Me! I can do it! Meow~
Meow~
Um…
Are we going to get the Cats of the game industry?
We don't have a plan officially but… Vanderwood wasn't a character we planned to put in the game originally. So...
Maybe…. It might be possible...
Nobody can tell the future.
Yeah, I guess there's a 0.01% chance?!
I'll send you my Résumé
Are you starring as a cat?
Meow~
That was a fun question.
Uh… Actually… We have a lot planned right now so we haven't thought of the Vanderwood route.
As you know, we have to release the after ending and work on other DLCs.
And we have no plan for a Vanderwood route yet.
But as we release other DLCs and develop more backstories
and decide that there is enough backstory for the character and we know what message to convey through the character
I think it is a possibility.
That was the last question.
Thank you very much for all the love you've gave us and to Mystic Messenger.
We'll see you next time.
Thank you.
