Top 8 Mistakes at a Prerelease.
The more Prereleases we play,
The more mistakes we see.
This is a list of the top 8 mistakes made, at a Prerelease.
And I will give you something that will help you out with the upcoming Ixalan Prerelease.
And we are starting right now.
Reaching and Teaching Young Mages of all ages.
Welcome Young Mage, I'm Rhino.
Before we get started,
What do you think is the number ONE mistake at a Prerelease?
Let me know in the comments below.
We are all excited about the new set coming out.
We have seen the spoilers and we are ready for Game Day.
Here's the top 8 mistakes players make.
Number 8
A deck with too many cards.
A Prerelease is a "Sealed" event.
You are told to build a deck with a minimum of 40 cards.
So build a 40 card deck.
Not 60, not 45, not even 41…
40.
That's it.
No more.
The math gets crazy when you build a bigger deck.
And most of the time, people with bigger decks, lose games.
You will be playing against people with 40 card decks,
don't start off at a disadvantage.
Number 7
Having the wrong number of lands.
So you are building a 40 card deck.
A 40 card deck wants 17 land… sometimes 18.
But never 16.
Just like having too many cards in your deck,
having not enough lands makes the math crazy.
And there's a good chance you will lose.
Also a extra pro tip, if you plan to play with sleeves,
Bring nine of each basic land already sleeved up ready to go.
that will save you some time in the deck build.
Number 6
Wrong color mix.
The most common deck that wins at Prerelease events are two colors.
Mono colored are extremely rare.
And more than two colors are rare as well.
If you have multi colored lands or ways to tap other things to give you mana of other
colors, then a three or four color deck can work.
But 99 percent of the time the winning decks are two colors.
And they are pretty balanced fifty-fifty between the colors.
If you have a lot more of one color over another, you risk having a hand full of one color and
no mana to cast it.
Keep a balance between the two colors, you will have a lot more fun.
Number 5
Relying on your rares to win the game.
Most of the time you will have two, maybe three rares that will win you the game.
These are great and a fun way to finish the game.
But there's a chance that these couple of cards will be shuffled to the bottom of your
deck.
Don't focus on a single win condition that relies on these cards.
And that leads to…
Number 4
Not playing enough creatures.
Decks with creatures win more games at sealed events.
Just like the lands, you need around 17 creatures.
Creatures win games at Sealed events.
You can try to win using alternate win conditions, but that rarely works.
You can try a mill deck, but that almost never works.
Creatures swinging for the win is how you win at a Sealed event.
So play 17 creatures.
Number 3
Not playing the right creatures.
Now that you are playing with enough creatures, you need to pick the right ones.
You want to choose creatures with the right abilities.
Evasion abilities dominate Sealed events.
The Evasion abilities are Flying, Menace and Trample.
Remember, most of the time this is going to be creature versus creature.
So if your creatures Fly, you can dominate the game.
If they have Menace, you can choose which blockers you take out.
If they have Trample, they go over top of the other creatures and still damage your
opponent.
Picking the right creatures is important.
Number 2
Not building your deck on a curve.
You want to play a land each turn.
That's why we have 17 lands.
You want to have plenty of creatures to play, that's why we have 17 .
But you have to be able to play them each turn for the mana you have out.
I've seen decks that don't have any little creatures.
They lose before you have a chance to cast anything.
It's like building a fire.
You have to start with the little stuff.
Things that are easy to burn.
Then you put bigger and bigger sticks on the fire.
Then the fire gets really big to the point that it's hard to put out.
Follow the curve and you will be able to keep putting bigger and bigger creatures into battle.
Number 1
Not being prepared.
Know the cards.
Know the mechanics.
Be familiar with all of the cards, so you aren't wasting time with a lot of reading.
I do a lot of research before a new set comes out.
I want to know what options I have.
I want to know what cards will work together.
You won't regularly win with combos during a Sealed event.
But you will win with cards that have a good synergy.
Making a deck is much easier when you know the cards.
I did promise something to help you out at the Ixalan Prerelease.
The first thing is my game mechanic videos.
These have examples for each mechanic.
I have a playlist listed in the description below.
I also have a card that links to it.
And second,
We have compiled a cheat sheet using the suggestions of players much better than me.
This sheet can help you filter out cards quickly.
The higher the number the more useful the card.
The first column is the rating for the prerelease.
The second is how it may do in Standard.
The scale is one to five.
Commons are 1 to 3.
Uncommon are 2 to 4.
And rares are 3 to 5.
You can download your own copy at the link below.
Print it out and take it to your Prerelease.
Or keep the digital copy.
Each creature is linked to Gatherer.
So if you have any ruling questions, just click.
SO what do you think of this list?
Did I miss anything?
Are they in order?
