A lot of us have seen the 90s.
It was a good time, with many new things coming and changing the way we lived!
But of course, as is always the case, the good times don't really last all that long.
But there are still many memories!
So lets take a look at some of the things from the 90s that aren't around anymore!
23.
Floppy Discs.
1.44 mb of data does not sound like much these days.
But in the 90s, that was a whole lot of space!
And so were the floppy discs which revolutionised the way we shared data.
But there was more to it.
Pulling back on the metal slider head and hearing its cracking sound was a guilty pleasure
many of us enjoyed!
Not to mention the number of jokes that it gave us unintentionally through its name itself!
22.
Video Tapes.
There was something special about lining up in stores to get the tapes of the latest movies
and cartoons!
From kids to grown ups, getting a tape was a big deal!
Friends and family would gather together to watch them and every so often, it would get
wound up in the player!
But that aside, they were always a great experience!
21.
8 Bit Video Games.
Donkey Kong, Super Mario, Contra and many more are things that may still be around today
but the real pleasure of playing them was on a gaming console with cartridges!
The best part was that if there were any glitches all you had to do was take out the cartridge
and give it a nice blow!
Problem solved!
While there is no doubt that playstations and xbox are still fun, they lack the old
world charm of a Super Nintendo!
20.
Walkman.
Cool got a new definition with the advent of the Walkman from Sony.
It gave everyone so much freedom of being able to walk around with their music!
It was hard to spot a kid without a Walkman in the 90s.
Sharing cassettes and headphone were the only reason to have friends back then!
19.
Discman.
Of course, the Walkman was slowly phased out as CDs became more popular!
It could hold more songs, was much more portable and even the quality was better!
So of course, the discman was the next logical step after the Walkman.
And it taught many of us the value of not being too restless as even the smallest movements
could lead to the skipping!
Still, they were a great way to rock out to music!
18.
Dial up Modems.
As you are watching this video, you probably do not even realize how much the internet
has improved over the years.
Many of us have spent time sitting in front of a computer and waiting for the dial up
modem to connect us to the internet.
And they sure did take their own time!
But once connected, they gave us access to a whole new world which was unheard of at
that time!
17.
Pokemon Camera.
Before the hunt for pokemons actually began in real life, there were these bright little
camera that were around in the 90s which would superimpose random pokemons on all the pictures!
It was a pretty good way to spend an afternoon with the kids making them wonder where all
those pokemons came from!
16.
Typewriter.
These were the ultimate tool, whether you worked in the office or were an author!
There was something oddly satisfying about the keys hitting the paper and you could never
be enamoured enough with those few who could type at insane speeds!
There was just something magical about those people!
Not to mention the whirring sound as you pushed the paper back for the next line!
15.
Pagers.
Before the advent of the mobile phones, getting hold of people was actually a huge task.
You would either have to call them on a landline or fix a time to meet.
And if by any chance there was any sudden change in plans, all you could do was hope
the others weren't offended.
Then came along the pager, which could be carried around and could get messages on them!
It was a great step towards communicating with one another, and was a very handy thing
to have around.
Before whatsapp of course!
14.
Digital Diary.
While it was not possible for everyone to afford a secretary and carrying a notepad
around wasn't really in good fashion, there was the digital diary which you could keep!
These nifty little things could hold everything from your appointments, to-do lists and even
let you make notes!
And while the smart phones have actually made it redundant, it was all the rage back in
the 90s!
13.
Light up Yoyos.
Nowadays kids are into digital things like phones and console games.
But there was a time when a walk around the neighbourhood was one of the best things to
do.
Of course, swag was still important back then which meant that you would see many kids with
a light up yoyo!
If you could master the Yo-yo, you were undoubtedly cool and if you happened to have a flashing
one which could make nights more interesting, you were definitely the King of Swag!
12.
Flip Phones.
These babies were all the rage back in the day.
It looked uber cool to take out a phone, flip it open and then talk!
But it did come with its drawbacks though as these phones were extremely vulnerable
to breaking!
Sadly, with the advent of touch screen phones, no one really remembers these flip ones anymore!
11.
Answering Machines.
Whenever you are not able to receive a call, people can generally leave a message on the
voice mail which you can hear later.
But no one has seen where these voice mails are actually stored because they are digital.
But back in the day, there were answering machines which actually recorded the messages
and you had to record your own message to let those calling know that you cant attend
the phone!
Crazy, right?
10.
Smoking Ads.
Even as kids, there was nothing as remarkable as the Marlboro man.
Or any of the other people in smoking ads of old.
Even though all of us knew at some level that smoking was harmful, there were many kids
who took up smoking just because of the ads!
So in a way, it was actually the right call to ban smoking ads!
9.
Macarena.
If you lived in the 90s and did not know how to do the Macarena, you were a geek!
There was no other way that you would not know how to move to the beats of this awesome
song and while it may still be a rage at retro parties, it is sad that most kids today do
not know the Macarena!
8.
WWF Trump Cards.
While trading cards might still be around, there was no greater fun for a kid in the
90s than playing trump cards where they would pit one wrestler against another!
It was the simplest of games and one really great time pass!
Oh and yes, the WWE was WWF back then!
7.
TV Antennas.
If you have looked at old photos of television and see two rabbit ears protruding from them,
they were basically TV antennas.
These were essential for the TV to display any picture and every house had one person
who was designated to moving it around till you got the best picture!
It was annoying, but it was a family tradition!
But with the advent of digital television, the antennas made an exit though!
6.
Cordless.
Telephones were usually kept in the living room and many houses did not really have extensions.
Which meant that if you needed privacy during a phone call, you either had to shoo everyone
out of the room or get a really long wire!
But all that changed with the cordless phones which allowed you to move around freely while
talking on the phone!
But they have become obsolete since the coming of the mobile phones and if you ever happen
to see one, save it as a treasure!
5.
Mixtape.
Till date, thinking of the perfect gift for the one you love is a difficult thing to do!
But in the golden days of the 90s the solution was pretty simple.
A Mixtape!
What it meant was that you could get hold of a blank cassette and record all the songs
that you think express your feelings best and gift it to your girlfriend or boyfriend!
And while mixtapes went out with the cassettes, you can kind of do the same thing by making
a playlist but it just isn't the same thing, is it?
4.
Boy Bands.
Ok so while nobody would ever actually admit today that they loved boy bands, there is
no denying that all of us were pretty crazy about them.
Not only could they sing, they could also dance and look good while doing it!
And their music was the kind of thing that would make you jump on the dance floor straight
away!
But of course, we cant really admit that we liked them can we?
Especially not the guys!
3.
Maps.
Ok, to be fair they are still pretty much around and are still used a good deal.
But that is only in places where the internet is not a sure thing.
Maps were pretty much a part and parcel of any road trip and you really could not step
out without it.
Reading it was not everyone's forte and so there were designated navigationists!
Not like the ones today who just turn up the volume on their phone and let google maps
do the rest!
2.
Limewire.
While something similar exists today in the form of torrents, there is no denying that
nothing gave us as much pleasure as a file getting downloaded back in the day when a
movie took about a few days to download!
Not that we are saying you should download anything through these places, but if you
were inclined to do so in the 90s, limewire and a couple of other places were the only
things that you could hope for!
1.
Film.
Memories are always a special way to remember something.
And while selfies and camera phone still do that, there was something extra special about
the cameras of the 90s which had to use film.
It was a painstakingly meticulous process to load the camera with the roll and then
each photo had to be just right because clicking away randomly cost money!
Oh and not to mention once the pictures had been taken, you still had to wait for some
time before you could see them as they had to be developed first!
