What if we replaced politicians with randomly selected people? | Brett Hennig - Duration: 9:32.
I want to talk about one of the big questions,
perhaps the biggest question:
How should we live together?
How should a group of people, who perhaps live in a city
or in the continent
or even the whole globe,
share and manage common resources?
How should we make the rules that govern us?
This has always been an important question.
And today, I think it's even more important than ever
if we want to address rising inequality, climate change, the refugee crisis,
just to name a few major issues.
It's also a very old question.
Humans have been asking themselves this question
ever since we lived in organized societies.
Like this guy, Plato.
He thought we needed benevolent guardians
who could make decisions for the greater good of everyone.
Kings and queens thought they could be those guardians,
but during various revolutions, they tended to lose their heads.
And this guy, you probably know.
Here in Hungary, you lived for many years
under one attempt to implement his answer of how to live together.
His answer was brutal, cruel and inhumane.
But a different answer, a different kind of answer,
which went more or less into hibernation for 2,000 years,
has had profound recent success.
That answer is, of course, democracy.
If we take a quick look at the modern history of democracy,
it goes something like this.
Along here, we're going to put the last 200 years.
Up here, we're going to put the number of democracies.
And the graph does this,
the important point of which,
is this extraordinary increase over time,
which is why the 20th century
has been called the century of democracy's triumph,
and why, as Francis Fukuyama said in 1989,
some believe that we have reached the end of history,
that the question of how to live together has been answered,
and that answer is liberal democracy.
Let's explore that assertion, though.
I want to find out what you think.
So I'm going to ask you two questions,
and I want you to put your hands up
if you agree.
The first question is: Who thinks living in a democracy is a good thing?
Who likes democracy?
If you can think of a better system, keep your hands down.
Don't worry about those who didn't raise their hands,
I'm sure they mean very well.
The second question is:
Who thinks our democracies are functioning well?
Come on, there must be one politician in the audience somewhere.
(Laughter)
No.
But my point is, if liberal democracy is the end of history,
then there's a massive paradox or contradiction here.
Why is that?
Well, the first question is about the ideal of democracy,
and all these qualities are very appealing.
But in practice, it's not working.
And that's the second question.
Our politics is broken, our politicians aren't trusted,
and the political system is distorted by powerful vested interests.
I think there's two ways to resolve this paradox.
One is to give up on democracy; it doesn't work.
Let's elect a populist demagogue who will ignore democratic norms,
trample on liberal freedoms
and just get things done.
The other option, I think, is to fix this broken system,
to bring the practice closer to the ideal
and put the diverse voices of society in our parliaments
and get them to make considered, evidence-based laws
for the long-term good of everyone.
Which brings me to my epiphany,
my moment of enlightenment.
And I want you to get critical.
I want you to ask yourselves, "Why wouldn't this work?"
And then come and talk to me afterwards about it.
Its technical name is "sortition."
But its common name is "random selection."
And the idea is actually very simple:
we randomly select people and put them in parliament.
(Laughter)
Let's think about that for a few more minutes, shall we?
Imagine we chose you and you and you and you and you down there
and a bunch of other random people,
and we put you in our parliament for the next couple of years.
Of course, we could stratify the selection to make sure that it matched
the socioeconomic and demographic profile of the country
and was a truly representative sample of people.
Fifty percent of them would be women.
Many of them would be young, some would be old,
a few would be rich,
but most of them would be ordinary people like you and me.
This would be a microcosm of society.
And this microcosm would simulate how we would all think,
if we had the time, the information
and a good process to come to the moral crux of political decisions.
And although you may not be in that group,
someone of your age, someone of your gender,
someone from your location and someone with your background
would be in that room.
The decisions made by these people would build on the wisdom of crowds.
They would become more than the sum of their parts.
They would become critical thinkers
with access to experts,
who would be on tap but not on top.
And they could prove that diversity can trump ability
when confronting the wide array of societal questions and problems.
It would not be government by public opinion poll.
It would not be government by referendum.
These informed, deliberating people would move beyond public opinion
to the making of public judgments.
However, there would be one major side effect:
if we replaced elections with sortition
and made our parliament truly representative of society,
it would mean the end of politicians.
And I'm sure we'd all be pretty sad to see that.
(Laughter)
Very interestingly,
random selection was a key part of how democracy was done
in ancient Athens.
This machine, this device, is called a kleroteria.
It's an ancient Athenian random-selection device.
The ancient Athenians randomly selected citizens
to fill the vast majority of their political posts.
They knew that elections were aristocratic devices.
They knew that career politicians were a thing to be avoided.
And I think we know these things as well.
But more interesting than the ancient use of random selection
is its modern resurgence.
The rediscovery of the legitimacy of random selection in politics
has become so common lately,
that there's simply too many examples to talk about.
Of course, I'm very aware that it's going to be difficult
to institute this in our parliaments.
Try this -- say to your friend,
"I think we should populate our parliament with randomly selected people."
"Are you joking?
What if my neighbor gets chosen?
The fool can't even separate his recycling."
But the perhaps surprising but overwhelming and compelling evidence
from all these modern examples
is that it does work.
If you give people responsibility, they act responsibly.
Don't get me wrong -- it's not a panacea.
The question is not: Would this be perfect?
Of course not.
People are fallibly human,
and distorting influences will continue to exist.
The question is: Would it be better?
And the answer to that question, to me at least, is obviously yes.
Which gets us back to our original question:
How should we live together?
And now we have an answer:
with a parliament that uses sortition.
But how would we get from here to there?
How could we fix our broken system
and remake democracy for the 21st century?
Well, there are several things that we can do,
and that are, in fact, happening right now.
We can experiment with sortition.
We can introduce it to schools and workplaces and other institutions,
like Democracy In Practice is doing in Bolivia.
We can hold policy juries and citizens' assemblies,
like the newDemocracy Foundation is doing in Australia,
like the Jefferson Center is doing in the US
and like the Irish government is doing right now.
We could build a social movement demanding change,
which is what the Sortition Foundation is doing in the UK.
And at some point, we should institute it.
Perhaps the first step would be a second chamber in our parliament,
full of randomly selected people --
a citizens' senate, if you will.
There's a campaign for a citizens' senate in France
and another campaign in Scotland,
and it could, of course, be done right here in Hungary.
That would be kind of like a Trojan horse right into the heart of government.
And then, when it becomes impossible
to patch over the cracks in the current system,
we must step up and replace elections with sortition.
I have hope.
Here in Hungary, systems have been created,
and systems have been torn down and replaced
in the past.
Change can and does happen.
It's just a matter of when and how.

Here at Cannes Lions, the ad industry's biggest event , executives are facing
a lot of questions about the future of their business - and they don't have a lot of answers.
We surveyed the field to find out what experts here think are the biggest talking points
in the advertising industry. The first thing we found?
Digital means people are taking in content - and ads - anytime, anywhere.
We need to embrace technology.
We need to embrace the fact that our viewers are consuming content everywhere, whenever they want.
It's a complete frustration of mine that digital is still something you tag
onto the beginning of a word when it's actually the world.
We all have phones, therefore we are digital.
That brings us to our second theme: data is money.
Historically you would put money out there and there was no way to understand
if you actually got anything in return.
And now there's very, very easy opportunities to spend a dollar and understand if you made
two dollars or three dollars.
New players from consultancies to blockchain startups are working to track and monetize data in advertising.
Brands and creators have become a little bit too concerned about owning all the data
and they're trying to make too much of the data.
One thing that might curb this data addiction?
New privacy rules like Europe's General Data Protection Regulation - or GDPR.
If people don't comply with the rules, there's real consequences,
where in the past that hasn't been the case.
Another major topic?
Brands want control over their ads.
For many companies, this has meant teaming up with influencers who create their
own content on platforms like Instagram or YouTube.
So in some ways, they're better than some of the brands might be
in creating that content in the first place?
They create amazing content for their own brand.
So they know the brand guidelines themselves. They create aesthetically pleasing content.
And then they know how to distribute. They know how to get audience
because they've created this audience.
Other companies have ditched ad agencies to produce their own content in-house.
Do you think that those agencies that aren't keeping up, could they become irrelevant?
I mean, I think there is the possibility of that happening.
And I think the speed in which we need to evolve today to keep ahead is faster than it's ever been.
The bottom line?
Advertising is evolving quickly - and companies that can't keep up might be left behind.

Xiaomi Mi 8 SE Review - Give It A Month - Duration: 12:20.
Chris here back with the full review of Xiaomi Mi 8 SE so this is the smaller
model of the me eight and has a five point eight eight inch screen it's
powered by the Snapdragon 710 four to six gigabytes of RAM and to 64 gigabytes
of internal storage it is emmc fly point one's back and that
is all we get we don't have 128 or 256 gigabyte storage option which I feel is
an error considering that this phone you cannot expand upon that storage there is
no micro SD card support but the build quality of this phone is very good it
has a full metal frame all around the outside and we've got glass on the rear
so it's got a bit of a sony xperia meets iPhone 10 kind of look to it the quality
of it is good i've got middle buttons on the right-hand side one of them is
textured the power button so you can distinguish the difference between the
volume rocker and that button there the glass on the rear is 2.5 d and it's
quite easy to scratch I have noticed I've already got quite a few scratches I
don't even know how this has happened because I have been using a case now the
camera module you can see we've got obviously two cameras they're dual tone
LED flash the main sensor is 12 megapixels it has an F 1.9 aperture it
is a Sony AMX 363 sensor which is a decent sensor and used in a lot of
flagships it's the same sensor used in than me 8 but here it is lacking optical
image stabilization we only have electronic up to at the time of this
review only 1080p 4k currently does not work so that footage is shaky it does
take a really good photo but I'll get onto that later on in this review the
other camera below that is 5 megapixels that's just used for your portrait mode
or your depth effect blurred backgrounds up the top we have an IR transmitter
secondary mic for voice calls couple of antenna lines there down the bottom type
C port microphone loudspeaker now the type C port obviously or outputs audio
you have to use the adapter now when you use the adapter audio quality is good
it's very clear there's no hisses no static now I'll give you a sample of
that loudspeaker just mentioned that the loudest is good the
quality isn't super-high it can distort a little bit a hundred percent volume
but overall not a bad loudspeaker but here's that sample
and then on the left hand side of the device there is a sim tray yes it has a
notch so it's wider thus not than most other phones with notches it's a lot
wider than the one plus six it has a little smaller earpiece in here now call
quality and voice calls when you listen to them through this earpiece of course
sounds okay but not the best I believe it's probably because of the size of the
earpiece being smaller it just sounds a little flatter but the volume is all
right that comes out of it now we've got a front-facing LED flash for selfies and
the camera on the front here is 20 megapixels with an F 2.0 aperture it
tends to overexpose and this is a common thing that's been happening with xiaomi
phones onto the displays so it's a Samsung AMOLED panel and it's got a
really good brightness there's a 719 Lux maximum output really bright super
bright it's got good color reproduction the whites look good and you can of
course tweak that to your own personal preference through the settings now it
also supports HDR I only have one minor complaint with this otherwise really
great screen is that there blacks at certain angles don't look as deep as
they should now it's down to other two things I have worked out it's either the
glass they have used covering the AMOLED panel or it's not optically bonded there
may be a small gap between the AMOLED panel and then the glass or even maybe
perhaps a layer on top of the AMOLED panel that's the only thing but it is
just a very minor complaint this display is so much better than the likes of the
me 6 X's display or the redmi note 5 display they use IPS panels the 18 by 9
aspect ratio but this display here to me is just a lot better now the UI it runs
is me UI 9.5 that's shammies own and I won't go into a lot of detail with it
that it's got a lot of features on they've got things like double tapped
away we do have also and always-on display so that's something that's come
through of course with the AMOLED panel they can use that now at the moment in
time of this review all it can display is just your messages and the date and
the time that's it I really wish it would display other notifications if
they can allow us to customize that that would be great but it's really good
having this feature there of course it will slightly drain the battery now the
thing with the UI and the knotch too is that when you want to see the
notifications they're not actually there you have to swipe down the same goes for
the battery percent so that will not be displayed in the current setup and the
icon so Sherman's got a few patches to come through for this one clearly
because I've also seen some stutters with notifications swiping down has
sometimes being very laggy especially when you just turn on data or Wireless
and you start getting all those whatsapp notifications coming through there's a
lot of lag at times and the chipset is quite powerful and it's not a fold of
that the other thing to us notice just a couple of minor little bugs with the UI
that I've had icons on top of other ones so the ticks doubling up very minor and
also sometimes some lag when using full gesture mode just going through recent
apps so that's just a minor thing there's a few little bugs that they have
to iron out now performance of the phone in general is very good though when you
don't see any of that lag you've got an ante to score of almost 170,000 so that
puts it above the snapdragon 660 and the 6-3 six which is about 130,000 so
performance is good now the wireless I have a minor complaint here with a
whiner Wireless it doesn't seem to be as fast as other phones for some reason and
I cannot figure out what why this is I've done a lot of speed tests I've also
used apps like Wi-Fi sweet spot just to see their maximum throughput there and
it's falling below other phones I just believe a patch is probably needed again
software here isn't quite there at the moment with those GPS signal is good it
gets a fast lock also the internal storage is fast for the specs now we're
having a look at added battery life the battery capacity is 3121 hours so it's
not the largest because it is a smaller phone obviously they had to cut down
over for example a 3400 see in the me 8 but it did surprise with good battery
life here so with my own battery life tests that i do i do continual use i use
the phone quite demanding you can call a moderate to heavier
a lot of gaming and it managed to get close to eight hours on screen time so
you're gonna get about seven to eight hours out of this phone so there's
definitely a two day mobile phone the course depending on your use just take
this as a guide only charge times also very quick so it does support Qualcomm
quick charge three and in thirty minutes are challenging you can get around about
fifty percent battery life which is great and to fully charge takes just
over one hour and twenty minutes so all good there so to the main camera here it
can take a really nice photo a little bit oversaturated at times but I know
that most people will probably prefer these photos because the colors do look
great very nice and when you're viewing them
on the AMOLED panel do they look even oversaturated more perhaps it all
depends on how you have the screen calibrated but even getting is on my PC
looking at them I did a comparison against the ribbon note five and they
tended to be a little bit more saturated differently than the Rema note five but
it did lose out there with low light performance against that phone so make
sure you check out that review that camera comparison gaming performance so
a lot of games newer titles like pub she didn't actually order to Texas net
dragons 710 very well put it on the lowest settings but if you use
applications like GFX tool force it onto the high settings the game is still very
playable and it looks great so the performance here of the Snapdragon 17 is
great and even having a look at a lineage two revolution that even on the
highest settings very playable its smooth so good gaming performance I
think that what the well 1080p resolution which is this basically is
pushing it has no issues with all the demanding titles
so this is now shooting in 4k and you can see of course we get a lot more
detail the resolution is good now do have that image stabilization enable in
ceilings but you can see that clearly it is not working because the footage is a
little bit shaky and I don't have the steadiest of hands definitely noticeable
when you start to walk and move around average Xiaomi has to improve the audio
quality it's been a problem that we've had with my boss as a recent and
affecting mostly the flagships so hopefully with mui ten when that comes
out will improve the quality of the audio and give us electronic
stabilization face unlocking is also very quick it's fast and it's also very
unsecure there's a couple of videos that have been released one from china
especially that they managed to fool the camera with a simple a4 printout in
black and white of someone's face if I've got time I may do a video testing
that one out now to quickly recap here so we've got a fantastic AMOLED panel
from Samsung five point eight eight inches I really do like the size the
build of this the screen okay it does have the knotch
but what you're gaining is really good brightness good color reproduction
blacks okay it's certain angles they don't look as dark and deep as they
should be for an AMOLED panel but I think it's the glass but really the
glass on the back as well scratched and I don't even know how he did it but
using a case and it's got a couple of scratches on it already so it's a little
bit more fragile definitely than other phones because the glass back on it and
yes it has a bit of a copycat designed look compared to say the Xperia that
iPhone 10 we know that's what Charmy has been doing recently with their designs
so the bezels on the side a little bit thicker than the press images so be
prepared for a little bit of a surprise when you get your hands on this if you
happen to buy one it just won't be exactly as you thought
I noticed that when I first unbox this and four side bezels but it is good
you're gaining a really really good screen here so better life also
excellent core quality is good Wireless speeds not as fast as I expect it but I
believe it's down to software GPS is working well
the audio quality from the three point five outs using the adapter of course
you have to plug the adapter oh that sounds good it's clear it's crystal
clear static does it no interference there the
loudness is good but really comes down to software with this phone here that
Chairman's got a lot of optimization to do with the camera so fix the 4k
electronic image stabilization or enable it or let third-party applications use
it at least they also need to optimize a little bit the camera and low-light
front-facing camera over exposes they need to fix that and the audio there are
bugs with the UI so very minor bugs though not the whole phone crashing but
I just noticed that icons doubling up now and then I noticed some stutters
some lag that should not be happening with a snapdragon 710 the 710 looks like
an efficient chipset were they a good combination of features efficiency and
power it can play all the latest games on the high settings with good frame
rates there so overall once Xiaomi fix the software
you've got yourself a very decent phone price similarly to the Mi 6x and I think
a lot of people have been asking me which one's the best obviously this is
faster has the better display I think the better cameras are on the 6x though
so that one might have a slight edge I have a camera comparison of that one
coming up and currently working on it and I do hope to catch you back in the

Mark Cuban Gave Red Hen Huge Gift For Booting Sanders But Trump Just Took It All Away
This is simply beneath Mark Cuban in my opinion.
He had nothing but high praise for the Red Hen restaurant owner who booted White House
Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and seven members of her family.
That owner proceeded to follow Sarah's in-laws and protest them at another restaurant that
they went to after leaving hers.
The behavior here is deplorable and should not be commended by anyone, especially someone
like Cuban.
He should know better.
President Trump took away the gift of praise that Cuban gave the Red Hen owner by stating
this, "The Red Hen Restaurant should focus more on cleaning its filthy canopies, doors
and windows (badly needs a paint job) rather than refusing to serve a fine person like
Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
I always had a rule, if a restaurant is dirty on the outside, it is dirty on the inside!"
Instead of praising this establishment, Trump was right to slam them for being filthy.
I make it a practice never to eat somewhere that is not well-kept on the outside, so I
can relate to what the president said.
Actually, this Red Hen franchise is dirty on the outside.
I've seen pics of it.
And ratings can be manipulated, but that's neither here, nor there.
I would never eat at an establishment that treats customers this way.
They have every right to ask someone like Sarah Huckabee Sanders to leave, but they
also have the right to be shunned and go out of business.
That's something Cuban might want to consider before condoning such horrid behavior.
The D.C. franchise of the Red Hen restaurant was quick to point out that they did not share
this owner's political views.
I don't blame them.
The restaurant was slammed on Yelp and on social media.
It got so bad, they eventually had to take down their Facebook page.
I have no sympathy for them in the least.
When Sanders and her family went into that restaurant, they ordered.
The owner claims to have taken a vote with employees and then asked Sarah out on the
patio.
She requested that Sanders and her family leave on moral grounds.
Which is a wicked joke.

"We got Cuban leaving Nate 'n Als Sunday in Bev Hills and, although he thinks it's
good the restaurant owner took a moral stand, he worries it could become a slippery slope
and other owners could deny service based on race or sexual orientation.
The good news … under federal law, an owner can't discriminate based on race.
The laws governing sexual orientation are dicier.
"On the other side … Donald Trump — the man who praised Kim Jong-Un — excoriated
the restaurant by tweeting, "The Red Hen Restaurant should focus more on cleaning its

You can make an argument on both sides," Cuban told TMZ.
"I don't know what I would've done.
More power to them for sticking up for what they believe in.
But on the flip side, you don't want to extend that to minorities, LGBTQ, et cetera.
So it's hard to figure out where that fine line is."
That comment led to the following tweet from Mark Dice, "So @mcuban wants to deny Trump
supporters from attending @dallasmavs games?
He says "More power to them" referring to Red Hen kicking Sarah Huckabee out."
Dice's tweet caused Twitter to explode over Cuban's comments.
Some called for the boycott of Shark Tank, CNBC's Cuban-starring startup-pitch show.
Others pointed out that Cuban should remember where his team plays its basketball.
Cuban, of course, loves the attention.
He responded to Dice within a half-hour of his tweet, telling him that all people, even
Mark Dice, are welcome to see the Mavs at American Airlines Center.
And it would seem that Cuban after all this had somewhat of a change of heart and defended
Trump and his supporters on Twitter, "Actually, we all owe a debt of gratitude to Trump voters
for opening our eyes to issues many of us hadn't recognized."
Although, I suspect that is a left-handed compliment from Cuban.
Cuban went on to tweet, "First issue that comes to mind is that ALL POLITICAL PARTIES
ARE USELESS.
We would be far better off if we gave up our party affiliation and identified ourselves
as American.
Political parties are the real "Deep State", trying to protect their own at the expense
of the rest."
That may be partially true, but egging on radical leftists doesn't help either side.

Diabetic Alert Dog: Natalia's Story - Duration: 4:36.
- I felt that the doctor was lying.
I couldn't believe that Natalia was
just diagnosed with Type 1.
When you get to the emergency room,
trying to explain to Natalia what's gonna go on.
What's gonna happen.
It was just too much.
- I've been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.
I'm the only one with Type 1 in my family
on my dad's side and on my mom's side.
- Type 1 is definitely not Type 2.
Knowing that your child needs insulin to live,
your whole world has just changed.
It's hard.
And then you have this goal.
And you try and educate everybody.
And a lot of people just don't believe it.
It took a while to set in.
When Natalia was first diagnosed, she was very angry.
But when Yukon came, it just helped relieve that.
- [Natalia] My mom was on Facebook asking people about,
do you know any companies for Diabetic Alert Dogs?
And this one lady commented.
- We went and met out with her
and see if this was really for real.
My husband and I was very skeptic about dogs alerting.
- [Natalia] She told us about SDWR and about their dogs.
- We were sittin' there for about a good hour
before her dog alerted onto Natalia.
And that's when I says okay.
Filled out the application and moved forward.
- Yukon is my Diabetic Alert Dog
and she detects my highs and lows.
How Yukon alerts to me is, she will paw me.
She'll jump on the bed and just start licking my face.
If I'm taking a nap or sleeping,
she will come up and paw or she'll whimper.
She'll pant really hard when I'm high.
- When Natalia doesn't respond to her,
she knows to come to me.
And that's amazing.
She wasn't really taught that.
That was just her.
- [Natalia] I kind of feel more free
and I know that she'll take care of me.
And if I'm sick, she'll come up on my bed
and just cuddle me and give me kisses and stuff.
And kinda protects me.
- Sometimes I think she's an emotional support dog.
She knows when Natalia is not feeling well.
And she'll go up there and just snuggle with her.
She loves to give kisses when
she knows you just not feeling well.
- Me and Yukon usually hang outside and play ball
or we just lay on the couch and cuddle.
We go on the trampoline outside
and she likes to jump up and down.
- She's right there for her girl.
And whenever Natalia calls her name,
she just gets up and goes.
She loves her girl.
Natalia doesn't like people hovering over her.
And that kinda made it a little hard on us
because we wanna make sure that she stays
as smooth as possible with her blood sugars.
Yukon and her, I can see, goin' through school.
They'll be side by side.
Seein' Natalia where she is now,
compared to when she was first diagnosed,
lets me know that my daughter's gonna be okay.
That she's gonna grow up healthy and have a full life.
Yukon has saved Natalia's life many, many times.
She's an amazing dog and we couldn't ask for a better one.

Why your ex won't text you back (and what to do about it!) - Duration: 10:26.
You recently went through a breakup and while you didn't have the time of your life, nobody
died.
You're still on okay terms with your ex but you miss them, a lot.
Now you're trying to get back in contact and you're being left on read.
Why won't your ex text you back?
Hi Youtube, I'm Jessica Boss, a relationship counsellor and dating expert.
I've made breakups my specialty because I love helping people get back together.
Maybe I'm just a romantic but I think that people these days are too quick to call it
quits.
It's hard to build a connection with someone and if you're really in love, it's a shame
to let it get away.

I've helped hundreds of lovestruck guys and girls go from exes to happily ever after
and texting always plays a key role in getting that contact going again.
But to make that connection, first you need to get them to text you back.
Here are some reasons your ex isn't answering your texts and what to do about it.
One, They're mad at you
We've all said something we regret when we're angry.
I once called my great aunt a "piece of garbage" after a couple of sangrias and
all she did was beat me at frolf (that's frisbee golf).
Try to think if they have any reason to be mad at you.
Maybe they found out something that you were keeping secret.
Maybe you've hurt them somehow and they finally had a chance to process it.
Whatever it is, you need to apologize.
If you think they're mad and you don't know why then do some sleuthing.
Think about talking to a mutual friend BUT BE CAREFUL.
If it's anyone you think will report back to your ex, don't do it.
You don't want them to think you're stalking them.
If you can't figure you why they're mad, either leave them alone for awhile or make
a blanket apology.
Later on in this video I'll get into more specifics about what this apology text should
look like.
Number Two: They know you want something
Even though they dumped you, exes aren't as dumb as you may think.
If things ended with you begging, pleading, and crying for them to take you back, they're
going to know that you texting them is you trying to suck them back in.
Or if you often relied on them for rides, money, or some kind of support, when you were
together, they may think you're just trying to get something out of them.
And they're probably in no mood to be helping you out.
Number Three: They're trying to move on
If they're not answering your texts it could be that they're trying to move on.
Does this mean your hopes of getting them back are doomed?
Not at all!
In fact, this is a good sign.
The key word here is "trying".
If they have to cut off all contact to try to move on with their life then that means
they are definitely still hooked on you.
If they were already over you then they wouldn't need to avoid you so hard.
Number Four: You text too much
Look at the length of their messages and then look at the length of yours.
Are you sending essays and getting back one word answers?
Does their inbox look more like an interrogation than a conversation?
How often do you text them?
Every day?
More?
Maybe they wouldn't mind texting you, but just don't want it to take up half their
life.
You're not in a relationship anymore (for now at least) so the amount of time you spend
together will naturally be much lower.
Texting is a reflection of that.
Take a few days off from texting them.
When you resume texting, drop the frequency way down.
I'm talking once a week, if that.
Have a short conversation and then get out.
Don't text them too late at night or early in the morning.
I'd aim for 10 am to 8 pm as your texting window.
It's important to also look at WHY you're texting them.
If it's your goal to win them back then every text you send should be a step towards
that goal.
You need to use texts to make them miss you, to make them jealous, and to make them associate
you with fun and happiness.
It has to be subtle but if you can remind them of a specific good time you had together,
pretty soon they'll be wondering why they broke up with you in the first place.

Number Five: They've found someone new
I know you don't want to hear this but there's a chance they stopped texting because they've
gotten over you by getting under someone else.
It sucks but you knew this was a possibility when you broke up.
The good thing here is that if it hasn't been that long then it's probably a rebound
which means they're trying really hard to get over you so you must still be on their
mind.
This is a tough one to come back from, but not impossible.

Number six: They're afraid to get hurt again
What if your breakup wasn't all that one-sided?
Maybe you had an on-again-off-again thing going on for awhile and it was tough on both
of you.
Or maybe you cheated and broke their heart.
Or you didn't take the breakup well: you yelled, you broke things, and you said some
things that hurt their feelings.
This is a big one.
There's no text you could send that would make up for hurting them.
Now it's time to apologize and break off contact.
You may still be able to save your relationship but it's going to take a lot of work.
More on that later.
Number seven: They're really over you
It could be that they're not responding to your texts because they're really over
the relationship.
This tends to follow a pattern.
Before they stopped responding, They were polite to you but seemed distant in their
replies.
They weren't willing to talk at length and they often waited a while to text you back.
The conversations slowed to a trickle and now have dried up completely.
It's hard to accept this one.
You still love them and they just don't feel the same way.
You'll need to take steps to get back into contact with them and unfortunately texting
alone won't do the job.
Number eight: You're dramatic
Do you find that you often get drawn into personal conflict and screaming matches?
Do you have to apologize to people more than once a month?
Have you ever sent a butt pic to somebody's work email?
If you answered yes to any of these questions then there's a chance you may be a drama
queen (or king).
Your ex loved you despite your drama but they've seen how you treat people who cross you and
they're afraid if they contact you it will get messy and they'll end up on your hitlist.
Real talk: Personal conflict is inevitable and we can all be messy bitches sometimes
but you shouldn't let it rule your life.
I know, I'm not your mom, but these people really aren't worth it.
If you can avoid drama, your life will be a lot more simple.
If you get angry and feel tempted to respond with some cutting remark, or a chair to the
head, take three deep breaths before you do anything.
So What Do I Do Next?
I'm going to tell you how to get them to text you again.
This method starts with (surprise, surprise) one more text.
This text will be way different than the other texts you've sent them to this point.
This is a text to say goodbye.
Don't worry, it's not forever, but you need to be apart from them for a little while
before you can get them back.
Especially if you've hurt your ex or have been particularly needy, pushy, or pathetic
in trying to contact them, you need to wipe the slate clean.
This text will be highly personal depending on your situation but what you shouldn't
do is beg, plead, or tell them you miss them in any way.
You need to make sure this text is perfect.
It doesn't need to be beautiful language or big words but it should be natural, short,
and express these three things:
You're moving on They need to know you're moving forward
and that you are interested in creating a new life without them.
This shows that you're strong and don't need them in your life to be happy.
And you need to believe it.
Even if you're not going to stop fighting for your ex, you need to be able to build
a new life without them in it for now.
The strength and independence you find during your time apart will be crucial to winning
your ex back.
Try saying something like:
You were a really important part of my life but I want to move forward, not backwards.
I think it's best that we don't talk for awhile.
You wish them the best You may have had your ups and downs and you're
definitely in a down now, but you loved this person.
Try to remember that.
You need them to know that while you may still be upset, you don't have any hard feelings
towards them and you want them to be happy.
How about:
Saying goodbye is hard but there are no hard feelings for me.
I just want us both to be happy.
You're sorry
If you cheated, yelled, broke things, or hurt them, even if what they did was worse, you
need to apologize to them.
This doesn't mean that what they did was okay but that you regret how you reacted to
it because you didn't want to hurt them.
Try saying something like:
When we broke up, I did/said some things I regret and I want to apologize for that.
I'm sorry.
So let's see:
You were a really important part of my life but I want to move forward, not backwards.
I think it's best that we don't talk for awhile.

I'm sorry.
Saying goodbye is hard but there are no hard feelings for me.
I just want us both to be happy.
Now that you've said goodbye, you need to really say goodbye.
Don't text, call, email, or contact your ex in ANY WAY for at least a month.
I know it seems like the opposite of what you should do in this situation.
How can you get them back if you're not talking to them?
Slow down.
This is just part one of this process.
This is called the No Contact Period and is a great way to begin trying to get your ex
back.
It's like hitting the reset button on your relationship.
If they're used to being constantly bombarded with texts and you hit them with radio silence,
they're going to be wondering what's going on.
A few things will happen then, without you having to do anything at all:
They'll start to see you differently.
It's hard to respect someone who has been constantly trying to contact you even when
you don't respond.
They'll see that you've finally grown a backbone.
They'll start to wonder if you've moved on and what you're doing now that's so
much more interesting than texting them.
Their mind will run wild and they'll begin to get jealous, thinking that you may have
found someone new and better than them.
And finally, and most importantly, they'll start to miss you.
This is the most important part.
If you keep texting them, they don't have a chance to feel your absence and realize
what an important part of their life you were.
It's true that you don't know what you've got til it's gone.
Don't be surprised if after a month your ex has realized their mistake and is right
back in your arms.
So there it is.
Follow this method for your best chance to get your ex to text you back.

Today, I'm standing up.
I don't know if it will make for a better video, but it'll be better for my brain.
Just as sitting less often can be better for your brain, too.
Hi, I'm Tony Dearing of GoCogno.com, the website for people with mild cognitive impairment.
Some things are obviously bad for brain health.
Cheeseburgers are bad for brain health.
You know that.
What I've become interested in lately is things that are sneaky bad for brain health.
They slip up on you and they do a number on your brain and you may not even be aware of
the damage that's occurring.
Sitting can be sneaky bad for your brain.
Sitting is the new smoking.
Have you heard that expression?
It's relatively new.
Nobody was paying much attention to how bad sitting is for health until an Australian
public health physician named Lennert Veerman issued a study in 2011 calculating that for
every hour we spend sitting in front of a television, we shorten our life by almost
20 minutes.
Being sedentary most of the time not only shortens lifespan, it also increases the risk
heart attack, stroke, diabetes, depression and cancer.
But now, here's something even more concerning.
Researchers at UCLA just found that people who spent too much time sitting are more likely
to experience shrinkage in the region of the brain that's critical to forming memories.
Worse yet, they say that physical activity doesn't appear to offset the harmful impacts
on the brain from sitting too much.
This research involved 35 people between the ages of 45 and 75.
They were asked about physical activity and the average number of hours a day they spent
sitting over the last week.
Each person then got an MRI scan, which looke at what's called the medial temporal lobe.
That region of brain region plays an important role in the formation of new memories.
They found that the more time people spent sitting, the more likely they were to have
a thinning of the medial temporal lobe, and that was even true of those who did a fair
amount of exercise.
Now people who do a lot of sitting and no exercise fare worst.
So you definitely want to get physical activity.
The recommended amount is 150 minutes a week.
That could be, say, 30 minutes of walking or going to the gym five days a week, or it
could be smaller amounts of time, as long as it adds up to 150 minutes over the course
of the week.
But it comes to brain health, and health in general, it's becoming increasingly clear
that if you put in that 30 minutes and then you spend the rest of the day sitting on your
duff, the amount of activity is not enough to compensate for the potential damage that
sedentariness is doing to your health.
So what's the answer?
Well, finding other ways to be a little more active.
Park a little further from your destination and walk a couple of blocks.
Take the steps instead of the elevator.
Look for active hobbies, and not just passive ones.
Try gardening, bird-watching, dancing, volunteer work, a yoga class.
Or play pickle-ball.
I've heard that's fun.
And if you find that you've been sitting for a while, just get up and try to do a few gentle
stretching exercises.
