I want to rant a little bit toda

also doing a PSA

Last week a fan sent over a news footage

I think it was a female rider

passing on the right

not sure what she hit on the road

lost control of the scooter and crashed

she was trying to pass a truck on the left

I recall it was a garbage truck (actually a cement mixer truck)

a large vehicle nontheless

went right under the rear tire

head got crushed and she died on the scene

this type of accidents is actually very common

with the popular use of dash cam

we can now examine the grueling accident as if we were there

I think

that the video serves as a great warning

a PSA (public service announcement) video in fact

let everyone knows the danger of passing

when I first saw it...it was pretty difficult

RIP rider. The driver of the vehicle

was brought in for negligent homicide

but I don't think he'll get charged

just that the driver would have to go through the legal process

very complex in Taiwan

a couple day later

my wife sent me another news article. same type of accident

I think it's on a mountain road

or somewhere. this rider also passes on the right

hit something on the road. maybe a sewage cover or ditch cover.

crashed and went under the car

also crushed

and died

honestly, when I saw the 2nd news

I was pretty upset

not sure if you guys feel the same way

how could this happen again? so soon?

how could the rider...

you might say that he's unfortunate, but he made the decision to pass!

it's a gamble right from the start

How could this happen again?

and then this morning, I saw another news

this rider trying to pass a scooter and a large vehicle

not sure if he went too fast

panic braked or something

not sure if his wheels locked up

he crashed while passing

went right under the truck

crushed and died

Oh my...WHAT?

I really need to talk about this

not just a PSA, but also a reminder for myself

a lot of times

you think a new rider

you'd say a new rider doesn't know any better

that passing like that is dangerous

frankly, I don't think complete noob would attempt this

new rider have fear

they are scared of passing or filtering

it's mostly people who already have experience

and ride like this all the time and assume it's normal

today I am not discussing about passing on the right

and whether if it's right or wrong

of course, passing on the right is wrong

but then, in crowded area in Taiwan,

everyone is used to passing on the right. especially when the motorcycle lane is placed on the shoulder

doesn't matter what you state in the law

people are used to riding on the right

they think it's normal to pass on the right shoulder

so I think the traffic rule is part of the culprit

basically shifting rider's behavior

to a dangerous place

but..most importantly

when passing large vehicle, especially in this type of scenario

it's always a gamble

the closer you get, the risker it gets

if you happen to go much faster

I recall when I was switching my license here in US

there was a part talking about high speed riding beside large vehicle

the wind beside those semi truck could suck you in

it's like you are at the train station

the wind turbulence is big enough

to pull you towards the vehicle

that's why passing close to large vehicle

is a taboo over here

So I mentioned that it's a reminder for me as well

because when you ride for some time

you get numb

the risk is still there, you just get numb and become oblivious

once, twice, three times or four times you do it

if nothing really happens, you think it's fine

for instance when I ride in Taiwan and see large vehicle

a lot of time I want to squeeze in between and just pass

that's a risk right there

you need to evaluate

can you pass? is the road okay?

or maybe wait a bit to be safe?

that's what we should think about

honestly, when you go under the truck

doesn't matter if you are wearing full gear

or with full face helmet. once the tire goes over you,

your head explodes. no question about it

all in all, I don't want think to happen to any riders

please ride safe and be careful
