Hello, it's me, Oliver Knott. Today we

are going to prepare aquarium plants, for planting into your tank.

We are going to start with the classic potted plants.

They can be bought in pots like this one.

You can easily pull the plant out.

If the roots are growing out of the pot,

just cut them back.

After that the pot can be removed easily.

This is rock wool, traditionally used to cultivate potted aquarium plants.

First let's get rid of the big chunks.

I like to use some water for removing the rest,

which I usually take from the aquarium.

As you can see here.

I shake the entire root ball of the plant, gently and carefully.

You'll find that

60-70% or more fall off right in the beginning.

The plant roots are now more or less rid of the rock wool

Small remnants can be neglected

when the plant is to be put into the substrate.

Now you can plant the entire plant,

or make smaller pieces.

Stem plants like this one are much easier to handle

than potted plants like the Cryptocoryne I had before.

You needn't even remove the pot

or clean the roots from the rock wool.

Just cut the stems of the plant

directly above the pot.

This gives you a bunch of loose stems without roots.

Take one stem, remove the first 2 or 3 leaves

and plant it using a pair of tweezers.

Stem plants take most of their nutrients directly from the water.

The stems will sprout roots in 2 or 3 weeks.

You can plant them in your aquarium now.

Epiphytes are planted on decoration like rocks and driftwood.

Epiphytic plants like Java fern, Anubias, Bucephalandra.

The preparation is pretty similar to that of a Cryptocoryne.

Remove the big chunks of rock wool and carefully wash it off.

The difference of, for example, Anubias in comparison to other plants is:

Anubias, like the other epiphytes, have a rhizome.

The leaves grow from this special part of the root.

These plants don't like to sit in the substrate.

They prefer growing on small rocks and driftwood.

Tie them down on a piece of decoration and place it inside your tank.

The plants will take root there.

Don't dig the rhizome completely into the substrate,

it might rot. Please keep that in mind.

Lastly we have invitro plants.

They are much easier to prepare.

These plants are cultivated in different substrate types.

There are agar-based gelatinous types, and liquids.

This is a gelatinous type.

The gel is completely harmless.

It just contains some sugar

and some nutrients.

This is a liquid substrate.

It is very simple to handle.

Just dip the roots of the plant in water, that's it.

Divide the plant into smaller portions.

Use a pair of tweezers to plant them.

If you have plants that were cultivated in firm agar plates

Put them into a bowl of water for a while.

The substrate will almost entirely come off on its own.

If you still find, after cleaning the roots,

some smaller chunks of substrate residue,

don't worry, it does not do any harm.

The plant roots will break it down very soon.

This is how invitro plants are prepared for planting.

Quite effortless, and

very simple.

this is just an example

the SWOT analysis

it's an analytic method

that we use to define strength

weaknesses

if you don't like the negative word " weakness"

you can use the word " challenge"

both strength and weakness are personal to you

internal to you

depending on your personality

these points will be up on your table

below you mention the possible opportunities

and then threats, what we can call risks, too...

not typically dangerous threats

we can call it obstacles, or difficult external factors

try to list them and know them

so in each part, take your time

those exercises do not requires fast delivery

there is no rush, no deadline, take your time

think and start defining

for the strength part

make a list, some bullet points

while answering the self some questions

what makes me different from others?

you do have something special about you

as in education for example

your field of expertise

it differs from medical studies, to management

to music !

so you probably have some sort of specialty

that was an educational example

you can have a gift, a talent

like you're gifted in painting

not everyone can paint or draw, you know

all those painting styles

am talking in general

so look into something special in you

something that makes you different

it's not about am better than him or her

but I master something

I have an advanced level in some field, more than others

even regarding relationships

you can say " am a sociable person"

everyone likes my company

this is also a strength

the good aspects in your personality

you can get some help to fill that table

you can reach out to your entourage: mom, siblings...

what do they like most about you

that's a strength point to write down

Also, you should write down your values and principles

your ressources ... like having a strong will

patience

ambition

integrity

these are also helpful tools to improve one's life

as much as you know your values

as much as s/he can make good decisions

that will reduce conflicting hesitation

especially when values are at stake

weakness...

I'd rather call it " the required improvements" of the self

Y: We often use "staff"

S: So, can you give me an example of how Japanese people use this word?

Y: "Staff" is a person who is working there...

S: The "staff" of a company is all of the people that work at the company.

Not just one person.

For that sentence, you should say "a staff member"

Y: "Staff member" S: Which is singular...

So this is quite common, in the corrections that I help with...

People use the word "staff" to mean a single employee.

A single person...

working at a company, or a restaurant...

or a business of some kind...

It's almost correct.

You're talking...this is normal for these kinds of mistakes...katakana words...

The meaning is almost there, but not in the right context.

The nuance is not quite right.

Remember that "staff" means group.

All of them, not just one.

Y: Can you give us some examples? S: Yes, sure.

Ummm...so...let's say...

So we'll do a negative example first...

So it means everybody lost their job...

All of them.

And the other example, we'll use a singular...

So this time...a single person.

Y: All people....all employees...

So what's the next...second word...

S: The second word is the verb, "challenge."

So, can you give me an example of how Japanese people use this word?

S: So... almost correct.

Explain to me what you think this word "challenge" means.

Y: "Challenge" means...ummm

To try something difficult.

S: Okay, so it does mean that.

But, there is a little bit of a difference in meaning.

The difference in meaning is that...

the thing you are challenging...

the obstacle...

or the difficulty...you think it's wrong in some way.

or you disagree with it in some way.

So, that's why it feels wrong

to say I challenging a test.

Because the feeling of the word, "challenge,"

means your opinion is maybe this test is wrong

So the meaning of "I'm challening the TOEIC test"

So it kind of has the secondary meaning of you think the TOEIC test is wrong...

That you don't think that's the best way to test English, maybe?

So there's two things happening, which makes it confusing...

which means it's not natural use, which means people avoid using it in that way.

Y: So in that sentence, in that context...

What should people say instead of challenge?

Try?

S: You can say, I'm attempting...

You can say "I'm trying..."

Yeah, or, I mean, it's a test...you could just say "I'm taking..."

I'm taking the TOEIC test...

Y: But the meaning is...it's quite difficult for me...

It's not easy for me so...I'm...

Just...challenge...

S: So "attempt" is probably the best very for that

I'm attempting the TOEIC test.

It sounds like there is going to be some kind of a difficulty

I'm attempting to get a great score...

But remember you can always use more sentences.

It doesn't have to all be in one.

Y: Ah, you can say as a noun?

As a noun, that's exactly what it means.

It means it's just difficult...but as a verb...

it has this meaning of disagreement or combat...

Y: Okay, can you give us some example sentences,

using challenge as a verb and a noun.

S: So, a verb example first...

So let's say there is a boxing champion...

And he's the best in his category.

So somebody wants to fight him.

So what that person means is...

I think I'm better than you...

I want the championship belt...

I'm going to take it from you. I challenge you.

So that's direct combat.

You can also challenge an idea.

Maybe somebody says, "I think that Canada is the best country in the world..."

and maybe you say "I challenge that."

I disagree with that idea....

As a noun...

Anything that's difficult...

can be a challenge.

Y: Ah, that's exact same as the way Japanese use "challenge"

S: Yeah, the meaning. Remember it's a verb versus a noun.

So the grammar is different, but the meaning is exactly the same.

Something that's very difficult for you.

is a challenge.

Y: Then what is the third one? The last one?

The last one, I quite like...it's quite interesting...it's "revenge"

So can you give me an example of how Japanese people use "revenge."

S: So what do you mean by that?

by "revenge."

Y: Like, try something again, that I failed.

S: So revenge does have that meaning....

a little bit

Like, something wrong happened.

and you're going to take some action and change that.

and like, make it better.

fix it.

but, the idea of revenge is usually quite serious.

not so much for things like tests, or individual personal failure

somebody does something really bad to you and in return...in retaliation...

you do something bad to them.

That's revenge

and it's usually used as a noun, not a verb.

Y: Noun, not a verb.

S: There is a verb "to revenge something"

but it's not used very often...

It's not common at all.

You should use this as a noun only, and only for very serious things.

Y: Okay so can you give us some examples?

S: Yeah, so let's say...

Y: Oh that's super serious...

S: Something like that...

Y: Okay, that's not that serious...

S: But still....it's about somebody else, right?

someone else did something, so I'm taking revenge...

I'm getting revenge

Y: Maybe, because you got angry? S: Yeah, exactly!

Y: You use revenge to people...

S: Yes.

Y: Not things.

S: No, no, no exactly.

You can't really take revenge on a thing.

Because it's not a thing...

like a TOEIC test...

It's a piece of paper.

It's a score.

It doesn't have any feelings.

So, that doesn't make sense...

So instead of saying "revenge"

you should say "make up for"

These three words...

and this is quite common for any person who's learning a second language...

which shares words inbetween languages

the meanings are quite similar, but the way the words are used in the language is different...

like the word "challenge" it has the right meaning, it's just being used in a different way.

So this is why reading or listening to television programs

or that kind of thing is really important, because you'll see how the words are used normally.

Y: Even if you can see on dictionary...

but you should know which one is natural...

S: Yeah, exactly.

Y: which one is more used.

S: Dictionaries are great, but they don't help you to figure out when to use the word.

and that's quite important

Y: or the nuance or feelings...

S: or the nuance of it...the feeling of it.

S: Yeah, so if you write a sentence, I'll check it...see if you get it right.

going to show how to use the content aware scale in Photoshop let's get

started shop so what I want to do is to fill

this this side over here on the left and I will use the content aware scale

before we get we get started I want to show you something if this image is a

smart object you can use the content aware scale so that's why I will first

rasterize the layer and then I will go to edit content aware scale or the

shortcut is alt shift ctrl + C and I will drag it from here as you can see

the Photoshop is doing a really good job on filling this background without

stretching too much the subject and that's how you use the content aware

scale so keep in mind to make the image rasterize and not smart object because

it will not allow you to use the content aware scale that's it thanks for
