Ever woken up on a cold morning and wished you had five more minutes in bed?
How about five days, months, or years of slumber?
Lots of researchers have been contemplating that question too, and not just after a hard
day in the lab.
Figuring out how to get humans to hibernate could be a life-saving therapy... and maybe
even let us travel to distant worlds someday.
Helping us with this research are two unlikely assistants: fat-tailed lemurs and hydrogen
sulfide – the molecule that brings you that lovely smell of rotten eggs.
Hibernation is an energy-saving strategy that lets animals stick it out through the tough
times – like cold or dry seasons when less food is available.
All kinds of creatures hibernate.
But it's not the same as sleep, which has characteristic brainwaves and eye movements.
Hibernation is more of a general slowdown – a long period of inactivity combined with
lower metabolic rate and body temperature.
Some animals, like Arctic ground squirrels, go all out.
Their core temperatures can drop below zero degrees Celsius for three weeks straight.
Now, humans obviously aren't doing this temporary shut-down thing on a regular basis.
But there have been anecdotal tales of people dropping into a deep hibernation-like stupor
and surviving extreme conditions.
One Japanese hiker, for instance, fell and broke his hip, lost consciousness, and lasted
24 days out on a mountain without any food or water.
And it looks like, genetically, we probably have everything we need to hibernate.
Fat-tailed lemurs in Madagascar hibernate for up to eight months a year during the dry
season, living off the fat reserves stored in their tails.
They may be smaller and furrier than us, but they're primates, and we share 97% of our
genes.
Scientists looking into this don't think there are special hibernation genes hiding
in that 3% of DNA that doesn't overlap.
Instead, lemurs seem to be able to hibernate by controlling which genes are turned on or
off.
For example, while they're slumbering away, lemurs somehow turn up genes involved in breaking
down fat, and turn down genes that process carbs.
If researchers could figure out how to cause human bodies to hibernate, by dialing genes
up or down, or something completely different, it could be a super useful tool in medicine.
Hibernation means organs need less oxygen to function, breathing slows down, and the
heart doesn't have to pump as fast.
So like, if someone's in a really bad car crash, they would lose less blood if they
were put into a hibernation-like state.
Plus, any organs that wouldn't be getting enough oxygen because of all that bleeding,
would need less oxygen to stay healthy.
So, overall, they wouldn't suffer as much damage.
Severely injured people could stay alive longer, and it would give emergency responders more
time to get to a medical center.
So, if we're really like lemurs, and our hibernation potential is just lying dormant
within us, how could we coax it out?
It turns out that one possible solution is hydrogen sulfide.
That's right, the chemical that stinks like rotten eggs could help us hibernate.
At least, it can do it for mice.
Like us humans, lab mice aren't natural hibernators.
But when they're exposed to hydrogen sulfide gas, mice have entered a suspended animation-like
state, and survived for hours in low-oxygen environments that would normally kill them.
Hydrogen sulfide does a lot of things to animal bodies, and in large amounts it can be deadly.
We know it can bind to a key enzyme in mitochondria, which are structures inside cells that make
chemical energy.
When hydrogen sulfide molecules bind to this enzyme, they block out oxygen.
And that could contribute to a shutdown of these powerhouses, lowering metabolism and
triggering a sort of hibernation.
To wake the mice up, all scientists needed to do was to remove the hydrogen sulfide supply.
The mice came to, and seemed fine, without any behavioral or neurological problems.
Just because it works on mice, of course, doesn't mean it'll work on people.
But think of the possibilities!
If space colonization ever kicks off, putting astronauts in a suspended animation could
make the journey a whole lot easier – and save on food and other resources.
Even if it just worked on individual human organs, that could be a huge step in medicine,
and make the organs we transplant healthier, and extend their shelf-lives.
Now, even if researchers figure out how hydrogen sulfide or some other treatment can send us
into a long sleep, there are still other issues that would need to be ironed out before we
have fully-functional "stasis pods."
Like, human bodies aren't well adapted to staying still for extended periods.
They tend to get blood clots, which are really dangerous and can lead to death.
And people on long bed-rest and astronauts in low gravity tend to lose muscle, and their
bones weaken.
So even if humans could be made to hibernate, we'd have to figure out how to keep our
bodies healthy too.
So, there are plenty of tests and tweaks to do before patients get better, hibernation-based
therapies in the ER or we're blasting off resting astronauts into space.
But as we learn more, human hibernation is looking less like a sci-fi fantasy and more
like actual science.

The Grand Staff - Piano Lesson 21 - Hoffman Academy - Duration: 12:17.
Hello and welcome back. I'm Joseph Hoffman.
Today we're learning about something very important. It's a special tool
for writing music called the grand staff.
Let me tell you a true story of how the first staff was invented. About a
thousand years ago there were men called monks who lived together in a place
called a monastery
that kind of looks like a small castle. These monks were religious people. They
read the Bible, they got together every three hours to sing and to pray. They
knew hundreds of different songs which we call chants,
so many chants in fact that the monks started to realize it was getting hard
to remember them all.
So they invented a way to draw the notes so they could remember and easily share
with others the hundreds of chants that they knew. The system they invented is
still in use today and it's what we use to draw music.
Let me show you what it looks like. This is a staff.
It's what the monks invented as a tool for drawing notes.
Let's see how many of these lines there are. Count them with me.
One, two, three, four, five, lines.
You might be interested to know that when it was first invented a thousand
years ago
it only had four lines, but today we use a 5-line staff.
Well, the monks decided that if the song had a low note they would draw it down low
on the staff like this, and the higher the position of the note
the higher you would sing, like this. Ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba.
They also decided that notes could be on a line like this or on a space between
the lines like this, and as notes step up
they go line space line space line.
Originally notes were drawn with these kind of square and rectangle shapes but
today we use a round shape called the note head,
like these. Let me draw a part of a song and see if you can guess what song it is.
These three note heads form a stepping down pattern like this,
Ba ba ba, ba ba ba.
That's right, this song is hot cross buns.
Now here's another song.
This one goes
bah-bah-bah-bah-bah. That's right,
Frog in the Middle. See, when the notes go lower for Frog in the Middle we drop
down to this line. SO SO SO MI MI.
Remember that notes can be on lines or spaces. For fun, let's practice being a
line note using your own head.
Can you make your head look like a line note? The line goes right through the
middle of the head when it's a line note.
Now let's practice being a space note. There's usually a line under it and over
it like this.
Can you be a space note? Sometimes space notes just have a line over it or just a
line under it, but a space note will never have a line through it.
This would be a line note. Now you're ready to meet the grand staff.
You'll notice that this time we have two staves, which is the plural of staff.
That's because when playing piano music we need a staff for your left hand and a
staff for your right hand. When you put those two staves together it makes the
grand staff.
You probably also noticed that there are some new symbols here.
Let's trace this squiggly line starting right here.
Can you trace this with me? Round up and down. This symbol that we just traced is
called the treble clef.
It sounds like trouble but it's treble.
Can you say that with me? Treble clef. Treble means high and so the treble
clef is used when drawing any notes from this middle C all the way up to the
highest notes. This treble clef is a symbol to remind you of something.
See how there is a hidden G shape in the treble clef?
Well, sometimes the treble clef is called the G clef and that's because believe it
or not it really is a very old fashioned
and fancy way of drawing the letter G. Hundreds of years ago they
sometimes like to draw their letters really fancy, and so in music it became
tradition to draw this G clef or treble clef right here to remind you that the
line going through this G swirl is the line for the note G. So anytime you see a
note head on that G line,
we call that note treble G on the piano.
That's this note right here.
If I were to put three note heads on G that would mean to play or sing G three times,
like at the start of Frog in the Middle.
Bah-bah-bah. But if the note head moves off the G line like up to this space, then it
becomes a different note, one step higher.
Can you think of the note that's a step above G? If you said A, you're correct.
So this is the G line, then this note is A, and what would this note be if we go
from a space up to the next line? Now we're on a B, and then what if we want to
step higher?
That's right, now we're on the C. You see the pattern, line, space, line, space.
Now if we go to the next line, we were on a C, now we go to,
that's right, D. We could keep going from there. D,
say it with me, E, F, G.
Now if we want to keep going higher, then we'll need a special line called a
ledger line. Ledger lines help us go off the staff, above or below. So if you want
to keep going past this G we could go one higher up to A and keep on going as
high as we want. Now let's take a look at this other clef. This clef is for the
low notes. Every note below middle C on the piano and all the way down
It's shaped a little bit like a frowny face.
If I turn it sideways you can see it's a little bit sad.
We call this one the bass clef and its nickname is the F clef.
I know this is even harder to believe but the F clef is also an ancient, old
fashioned way to draw the letter F. We call it an F clef because it is showing
us where the F line is. The F line always passes right in between the two eyes of
Mr. Frowny Face.
Anytime a note head is on this line
we call that note bass F. Bass F is right here on the piano.
Can you take your finger and trace it along the F line now and say F? Good.
Now there's one more note I'd like you to learn today.
This note forms a kind of bridge between the treble staff and the bass staff and
it's positioned on a ledger line which, remember, helps us to draw notes that go
off the edge of the staff.
This note is one ledger line below the treble staff or one ledger line above
the bass staff and we call it
middle C. Point to this note with me and say middle C, middle C. Middle C is the C
nearest the middle of your piano. Point with me and let's name
all three of these notes that we learned today. Treble G, middle C, bass
F. Now let's name the two clefs bass clef and treble clef. Their nicknames are
F clef and G clef.
Now let's do a game to review. Name the note that you see on the screen.
If you said middle C, you're correct. Name this note.
If you said bass F you're correct.
What's this note? If you said treble G you're correct.
Now let's play one more game. This time we're going to go for a hunt. This time
I've drawn lots of notes on the staff and you have to help me hunt for the one
that I call out.
Can you point to the middle C? If you're pointing right here you're
correct.
Now can you point to the treble G? If you're pointing right here you're correct.
This is the note that's on the G line. Now can you point to the bass
F? If you're pointing right here you're correct.
Great job learning about the grand staff today.

How to Make The Best Chinese Beef Lo Mein ~ Chinese Lo Mein Noodles Recipe - Duration: 5:06.
I've showed you how to make vegetable
and chicken lo mein and tonight is
Chinese beef lo mein. I'm Tess and I'll
show you how to make this easy and
delicious Chinese meal.
This is a stir-fry and it goes quickly
so I'm making sure that I have
everything prepped and ready before cooking.
These are the lo mein noodles
that I use. I get these at my Asian market.
There are different types and
brands so cook the lo mein noodles
according to the directions on the package.
These noodles are really long so
I cut them in half before cooking. When
done I rinse them thoroughly in cold water.
I usually divide the noodles into
two servings or wok cookings. And just
a reminder that you'll be able to find
this recipe, the list of ingredients, and
much more in the show more section below.
Now for the beef. I'm using a top round
or london broil cut. You can see how the
grain of the meat is running. You want to
cut the pieces across the grain so they
will be tender. I'm cutting the pieces
into small strips. For the beef marinade,
I'm adding some soy sauce, Shaoxing
wine, or you can use rice vinegar, some
cornstarch and a little baking soda to
help tenderize the beef. Mixing together
well and setting to the side for about
30 minutes.
For the sauce I'm starting with some
beef broth and you can use vegetable or
chicken broth or even water. Adding in
some mushroom flavor soy sauce and this
really adds a richness and it really
goes well with the beef. You can use some
light soy sauce. In goes some oyster
sauce, a little sesame oil, a little white
pepper and a little sugar. I don't use
too much sugar as we don't like the lo
mein sweet but you can adjust to your liking.
Giving that a good stir and
setting to the side.
I have my vegetables prepped and ready
and we are ready to cook! iIm using my
wok but you can make this beef lo mein
in any large pan. I have my heat on high
and my wok is hot. Adding in a little
peanut oil and the beef. Just spreading
out the beef and letting it cook for
about 15 to 20 seconds before stirring.
This prevents sticking and it helps give
the meat a nice coating. Cooking and
stirring for about three to four minutes
or until the meat is done. With the
pieces this small it doesn't take long.
Once done, I'm removing the beef from the
pan.
I still have my heat on high and I'm adding
in a little more oil, adding in some
sliced julienned onions, bell peppers and
I'm using some red and green peppers.
Giving that a stir and cooking for a minute.
I have my onions and peppers cut
into matchsticks or julienne pieces so
they mix better with the lo mein. Now I'm
adding in some sliced mushrooms.
Nothing better with steak than onions, peppers and mushrooms!
In goes the minced garlic and ginger.
Giving everything a good mix.
Cooking and stirring for about two to
three minutes.
Adding my beef back into the wok and
giving everything a good mix. In goes the
lo mein noodles and the sauce.
Mixing everything together, cooking and stirring
for a minute or two. You just want to
heat up the noodles. Right before serving
I'm tossing in the greens of the garden onions.
Giving everything a good mix and
we are ready to eat!
This Chinese beef lo mein is really easy
to make and it tastes better than restaurant...
or takeout... and add a fraction of the cost!
You can use the veggies that you
like and once you make this once or
twice, you can fine tune it to the way you like.

Selling the Rhino in South Africa: VICE News Tonight on HBO - Duration: 5:52.
Data released this week shows that the number of white rhinos
killed for their horns in South Africa dropped by 10% in 2016.
That's only a minor abatement,
after an unprecedented rise in poaching over the last decade
reduced the world's population of white rhinos to just 20,000.
South Africa is home to the majority of them,
even though the country only banned the trade of rhino horns in 2009.
The trade has been illegal internationally for 40 years.
The government hoped the ban would, quote,
"curb the demand for horn and horn products and reduce poaching."
It's easy to get on board with that argument.
But John Hume, the world's largest rhino rancher and conservationist,
disagrees with the trade ban's underlying premise.
And, in May last year, after a long legal fight,
South Africa's Supreme Court sided with Hume.
The State of the ban is now in flux.
— This is the horn that you witnessed being cut off there.
It's been cut in the dead part of the kerotin,
in the non-growing part,
like you would cut your nails off.
So just like your nails, it's not painful to the animal,
but because it's a wild animal, obviously,
we've got to sedate it, in order to do the procedure.
— Rhino breeder John Hume and his team
have stockpiled nearly five tons of rhino horn.
He has nearly 1,300 rhinos
on this property outside Johannesburg.
— The only way to save rhinos, in my opinion,
is to breed them and protect them.
And, in order to pay for the huge cost of protecting,
if we are not allowed to get the cost of that protection back
from selling the rhino horn, rhinos will go extinct.
— One kilogram of rhino horn, about 2.2 pounds,
can fetch up to $65,000 on the black market,
higher than gold and cocaine,
fuelling a surge in rhino poaching.
Only 13 rhinos were killed by poachers in South Africa in 2007,
whereas 1,054 rhinos were killed in 2016, less than a decade later.
— Remember, it takes practice, practice, practice.
— In addition to the ban,
the South African government is actively funding anti-poaching initiatives...
— Go, go, go, go!
— ...including the training of ranger staff
to combat poachers who now use night-vision goggles,
veterinary tranquilizers, and silencers.
— The kind of poacher we are meeting up here with is completely different.
So the training has completely escalated.
We've got people out there,
thousands upon thousands of man hours
is spent on protecting rhinos.
— But these initiatives come at a massive expense
that the pro-trade lobby says is unsustainable and counterproductive.
— In February 2009, when the moratorium was introduced,
we virtually said to the world,
"Go away, we will never sell you another rhino horn."
They did go away.
They went to Mozambique,
and did a deal with the poor Mozambican villagers
to slaughter our rhinos and supply the east
with horn from dead rhinos,
instead of what we could have done,
go on supplying them with horn from live rhinos.
The horns that Hume has accumulated could garner
nearly $300-million with today's estimate,
leading some to believe the motivation is financial,
rather than conservationist.
But Hume and the pro-trade lobby say that their legal inventory
would stem the demand for illegal poaching,
while subsidizing the enormous cost of conservation.
— I have real sympathy for the private owners,
because they are absolutely hemorrhaging cash on security.
How on earth do they pay for that?
— U.K.-based Save the Rhino is the world's leading rhino advocacy agency.
It's monitoring the ongoing trade ban debate in South Africa.
— So, if a legal method of raising money disappears,
what are the private owners supposed to do?
It's not just for commercial reasons.
They love their rhinos.
Absolutely believe John Hume when he says
he really cares about his rhinos.
He wants a healthy, viable population.
But it costs a hell of a lot of money,
and, somehow, they've got to raise that.
Selling rhino horn would be one way of covering those costs.
— The South African Ministry of Environment
denied our request for comment.
— We're not winning the war.
Why can't we see it? It's staring at us in the face.
Every day, rhinos do not pay.
And, therefore, they will not stay.

How to do More Pull Ups - Duration: 6:12.
In my previous video I showed you how to get your first pull ups.
Those methods are good for getting between 1 and 5 reps, but no more than that.
Here I'm going to tell you how to increase your maximum pull ups
if you already can do at least 5 reps.
Set an amount of time, like 5 or 10 minutes
and do as many pull ups as you can in that time.
The time limit forces you to make very short rests and that is very important when it comes to endurance training.
Note down the number of reps you did and try to beat it the next time you do that set.
You can do only one such set or more with 5 minutes of rest in between them.
Second method is very similar to the first one, but you instead of setting time limit,
you set a number of reps to do.
You want to finish as quickly as you can, so again,
you have to make very short rests between every set.
Different amounts of reps will require different strategies of strength distribution,
so be sure to alternate the number of total reps from time to time.
The next method is making use of drop sets.
Drop set is a set that consists of couple exercises arranged in decreasing difficulty.
You do max repetitions in each exercise with no rest in between them.
The idea behind it is to get your body used to long and strenuous periods of effort
that is needed in high rep sets.
Between every drop set there should be about 3 minutes of rest
and the overall number of them should be 5.
The drop set can be created in many different ways,
but I'm going to show you two example ones, harder and easier.
The last method is a little unorthodox, but works well if you are able to follow its guidelines.
It's called greasing the groove and was created by Pavel Tsatsouline.
This method is oriented on increasing your strength in a specific move.
Because of that you can greatly increase your max pull ups. How does it work?
You have to do 50% of your max repetitions in a set
and repeat this set a couple of times throughout the day.
Before every set you have to be fully rested and that means at least 15 minutes of rest.
Ideally you want to disperse the sets evenly throught the day.
For example: if you can do 6 pull ups maximum,
then you will do 3 pull ups for a set.
ou're going to do 5 sets a day, one at 8 a.m., then 11 a.m.,
2 p.m., 5 p.m., 8 p.m. Five days a week.
You can do more or less sets, but you always have to feel fully rested before doing a set.
After every week you can add one more rep to the set to gradually increase the difficulty.
It's best to create a habit to do a set every time you pass your bar,
or every time you go to kitchen or bathroom.

"C Boogie" which is a lot like "D Journey"
that we learned in an earlier lesson. In
this song we'll also be practicing our
counting out loud skills, which is a very
important skill for any musician.
It's a foundation for good rhythm, so
let's practice. Just like we had with "D
Journey" the beats are in groups of four,
so will you tap your thighs with me
while we count out loud, 1 2 3 4 to practice?
Every time we say one is when we tap,
like this, one two three four, now try it
with me, go.

Ok, let's learn how to play "C Boogie" on
the piano. As you know, now that we know
about piano posture,
we're always going to go through our
piano posture checklist every time
before we play something, so number one,
your bench, make sure it's not too close,
not too far, and that you're at a good
height so your forearms are level with
the floor. Number two your back is tall
and flexible, number three you're
going to check with your arm weight, make
sure your arm is relaxed, and number four,
we're going to have a nice hand and
finger shape. Today we're going to be
using the left hand and we're going to
be playing a C, which you'll remember
from a previous lesson is the note right
before D. D is right inbetween a
group of two black keys. C is the note
just to the left of that right here. Ok, so
we're going to take our left-hand finger
two and just drop on that C. Let's do
that together and count-out 1 2 3 4, always
dropping on beat one. Ready, go 1 2
3 4, 1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4, good. When you
drop you're going to let gravity kind of
just fall, and then you're gonna float up
with your forearm, and then just drop
every time on beat one. Now to make this sound
more cool we're going to add an
accompaniment.
Let me show you what that will sound
like. There's four beats to get ready and
then we start. Here it is, 1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4,
1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4.
Nice.
Ok, now when you try it with me get
finger two ready.
Remember you're going to keep just
enough firmness in that finger to keep
that shape all the way down to this
knuckle. You want to avoid your finger
buckling backwards like this. Make sure

Improvisation with Hot Cross Buns - Piano Lesson 2 - Hoffman Academy - Duration: 8:04.
Hello, and welcome back, I'm Joseph Hoffman. You've probably been practicing "Hot Cross Buns" from our last
lesson which is great because today we're going to learn how to play and
improvise with "Hot Cross Buns" jazz style. To improvise means to make up your own
music on the spot. You choose the notes as you go,
anything you want. There's no right or wrong. For our improvisation today we're
going to be playing along with a backing track which by the way you can download
from our website as a free gift when you register for Hoffman Academy. This backing
track is also found on the practice album which is included as part of the
complete materials for unit 1 lessons 1 through 20. The backing track gives us
accompaniment to play along with. Let's come to the piano to see how this works.
First we'll place our fingers on the three black keys. Then we will press play on
the backing track.
While it's playing, listen for four clicks. That's your signal to start playing.

Then you improvise.
1-2-3-4
Now it's going to be your turn to try, but first let me give you a few tips. Before you press play on the backing
track make sure you have your hand in position on the three black keys. Then when
you hear the four clicks think inside your head
1-2-3-4. Then after you say four you start playing "Hot Cross Buns" on the next beat.
Let's practice like this.
Say with me, 1-2-3-4 hot. Ok let's try together and actually on hot let's clap
our hands. So we go
1-2-3-4 hot. Ok try it with me, ready, go
1-2-3-4 hot. Good, now let's try it on the keys. We're going to say 1-2-3-4 hot crossed buns
and instead of clapping on hot we're going to start playing on the beat right after
you say four. Try it with me let's count and then start playing, ready, go.

Try one more time. Count with me and then start playing on the next beat, ready, go.

Good. So now when you are playing the backing track you're going to listen for the
four clicks and then you're going to play hot cross buns. Then you're going to
improvise using the same three notes you just used to play hot cross buns. Like I
said there isn't a right or wrong for improvising but if you're not sure how
to get started here are some ideas
one idea for improvising is to use the same words and timing but just change
the notes. For example, instead of hot crossed buns you can use the same words but new notes like
hot crossed buns, hot crossed buns, one a penny, two a penny, hot crossed buns.
That had all the same words, but just tried some new notes. It's also possible to change
the timing or add extra words that you make up yourself, like "I like hot crossed buns, oh yeah, I like them, hot crossed buns."
You can make up anything you want.
Also, Improvisations don't have to have words at all. You can just listen and
enjoy the various sounds and patterns the three black keys can make. Remember
you have repeating notes.
you can do stepping notes up or down or you can skip notes like from MI all the way down to DO.
One thing I do not recommend doing is just playing completely randomly like
this. That would be kind of like talking like blablablabla. No one could
understand you. When you improvise, play your notes clearly, just like talking. Have fun
making up your very own music. While you're doing the improvisation be
listening for the four clicks. That's going to be your signal to end the
improvisation and play "Hot Cross Buns" one last time.
To summarize, you're going to start the backing track. Listen for four clicks,
play "Hot Cross Buns," improvise, then four clicks again and play "Hot Cross Buns" one
last time.
Ok, it's time for you to give it a try. If you're not totally happy with your
improvisation, fine. You can rewind and try again and again as many times as
you like. Here we go. I'm going to play "Hot Cross Buns" along with you but when it's
time to improvise you're on your own.
Go ahead and get your hand in position. The backing track is about to begin.

Frog in the Middle: Adding Chords - Piano Lesson 20 - Hoffman Academy - Duration: 10:56.
Hello and welcome back.
I'm Joseph Hoffman. You probably noticed I've got the Frog family back.
That's because we're learning how to add chords to Frog in the Middle. Chords make
music sounds so much more interesting and exciting.
I think you're going to love it. So let me show you how to play a chord. When you
play a chord
what you're actually doing is playing two notes at the same time, and to do
that we're going to use finger one and five.
So to practice that I'd like to use a flat surface like a piano lid closed or
a table and just touch your finger one and five down and then gently lift your
fingers two three and four in the air, like this.
Now remember, your thumb kind of points sideways, like this, but your finger five
should play more near its tip. Now we're going to touch with fingers one and five
with fingers three and four in the air, and then lift by letting the wrist float up a little
bit like this.
Touch and lift. Now can you practice that with me?
We're going to do it three times. Touch fingers one and five together, touch and
lift, touch lift, touch lift.
Good, now let's try it with the other hand, also using figures 1 and 5. Touch
and lift, touch and lift, touch and lift.
Good. If you need extra practice with that just press pause and try some on
your own. When you're ready we're going to try it on the piano keys.
With your left hand let's put fingers one and five on G and C, so we're in c
position with the left-hand finger five on C, and remember you're going to play
two notes at the same time. A C and a G together will sound like this.
and fingers 2, 3, and 4 need to lift up enough that they don't accidentally play
their keys because if you play all at the same time it sounds kind of crazy.
So you only want C and G to go down. Gently lift fingers two, three, and four and use
a dropping motion to make the notes go down and then lift back up.

lift. Now let's try together. We'll do three drop lifts with the left hand on C
and G. Ready, go. Drop, lift, drop, lift, drop lift.
Good, you're playing chords. Now let's try your right hand.
So again with finger one and five on C and G, slightly lift fingers two three and four
comfortably and now we're going to drop and lift.
Let's try it together three times. Ready, go.
Drop, lift, drop, lift, drop, lift.
Good. I kind of like to imagine there's a balloon on my wrist that kind of gently
floats it up every time I do that.

Good, now let's try both hands, fingers one and five or five and one on C
and G, three drop lifts for chords.

Great, now we're ready to try playing it with Frog in the Middle.
Again, when you add chords this is going to make your song sounds so much more
professional. Before we try playing it
hands together let's give our right hand a rest and I want you to play chords
while you sing Frog in the Middle. I'd like you to play one chord
every time you sing the word frog and then also at the end of the song play a
chord on can't catch me, one chord for each word.
Why don't you watch me do it once and then you can try it. It will go like this.

So I wanted you to notice that every time I sang frog
at that same moment I played a chord and then I held the chord down while I was
singing the other words, frog in the middle, so all the while you're singing,
frog in the middle, that cord continues and then the next time you say frog
again you play another chord.
Ok this time why don't you try it with me. Place left hand on C and G with fingers
five and one, and we're going to play chords. Ready? Sing and play chords with
me.
Ready, go. Frog in the middle
Frog in the sea, Frog in the middle
Can't catch me. Good job.
Now let's try it in the right hand. Same idea, place fingers one and five on C and G.
We're going to drop every time we say frog, or can't catch me.

last of all let's try both hands. Place both hands on C and G, and we're going to
play some chords.

Now you're ready for the really mind-blowing part. We are going to
take chords in one hand while you play the melody in the other hand. This is
going to sound really cool.
It might feel really hard at first but once you can do it you're going to be
like, wow I am a pro. Now let me show you what that's going to look like on the
piano.
We're going to put the chords in the left hand and the melody in the right
hand.
Come and take a look. Are you ready for this?
So now notice how the two hands work together to play Frog in the Middle with
chords.
Here we go.
Isn't that awesome?
Now in order to do this
at first I want you to just try the very start of the song.
Hold the chord down, now remember the first thing you'll do is play a chord while
your right hand finger five plays frog.
So that's step one. Just see if you can play frog.
Your left hand is doing a chord and your right hand is playing frog. Try that
three times. Frog.
Your turn.
Good, now let's do it two more times. Frog
Again, frog.
Now the trick is make your left hand stay put and just keep holding that chord
down while you continue in the right hand like this.
I'll show you.
So remember, you do frog together and then your right hand continues with, in
the middle,
while your left hand just stays put and does nothing, and that's the hard
part. Your left hand is going to want to do the same thing your right hand is
doing.
but just tell it to chill out and let the right hand continue while the left
hand holds. My turn again.
Now you try it. Good, now we're going to try the same thing for frog in the sea.
We play frog together and then the right hand continues with, in the sea.
My turn.
Now you try.
Good and then the ending will go like this, Can't catch me. On can't catch me
remember you'll play one chord with each note. Can't catch me. Why don't you try that.

All right you have made it now to the end of Unit One.
This is lesson 20, right at the end, and we've done this great challenge of
chords in one hand while you play the melody in the other hand. Now it's very
common for this to be very tricky at first.
I'm ending this unit with a real challenge so don't get frustrated if it
didn't go great the first time or even the second time or even the third time.
It may take you lots of tries at first. If you're not quite getting it go back
to just playing chords
while you sing the melody, and the right hand does nothing. When you're
comfortable with that then try adding the melody back in and just keep trying
until you get it.
Practice means struggling sometimes and really working at something, and then
once you get it you're gonna be like whoa!
I can't believe this was ever hard! And it will start to feel easy.

D Major Pentascale - Piano Lesson 14 - Hoffman Academy - Duration: 11:35.
Hello, and welcome back. I'm Joseph Hoffman. Today we are learning a new skill. It's called
transposing. Let me show you on the piano what it means to transpose. Let's say you
want to play Chocolate. Place your fingers on C, D, E, F, G, which we can also call the
C Major pentascale. But let's pretend that you just woke up, so your eyes are still feeling
a little blurry, and by accident you place your right hand finger one on D instead of C. So
it sounds like this. Sounds a little different, doesn't it? We just transposed to the key
of D minor. Transposing means taking music into a new position, either higher or lower.
We could play chocolate starting on any key we wanted. It doesn't have to start on C.
We could start in the key of G. We could even start on a black key. But let's come back
to the key of D. When I play Chocolate in the key of D, is there a note that sounds
a little funny to you? Listen carefully. Aha, right here. This F sounds a little sad to
me. To understand why, we need to come back to the C Major pentascale. These notes have
letter names, C, D, E, F, G. But they also have names in Solfege. Can you sing them with
me? DO, RE, MI, FA, SO. Good, now this is important. Letter names are fixed. They can't
move around. A C is always a C, right here, and this key will always be a D. But Solfege
patterns can move around. They're not locked to just one key. It may help to pretend for
right now that DO, RE, MI, FA, and SO, are five people in a family. With Daddy DO, or
Mr. DO to you at the bottom, and RE, MI, FA, and SO, are all the kids. Now in this family,
most people like to have their own personal space. Notice how DO and RE have a black key
in between them. When two notes, white or black, have exactly one key in between them,
we call it a whole step. It's like they each have their own bedroom with a wall in between.
So DO to RE is a whole step. RE to MI is also a whole step because they have a black key
in between them. But here's where things change. Is there a black key between MI and FA? That's
because MI and FA are like best friends. Maybe they're twin sisters or twin brothers, and
they like to be really close to each other. So let's actually give them a special color
to help us remember that. Maybe it's like they're sharing the same bedroom. When two
keys on the piano have no note in between, we call that a half step. So MI and FA form
a half step. Then finally we have FA and SO. Do FA and SO make a half step or a whole step?
If you said whole step, you are correct. There is a black key in between again, so you know
it is a whole step. Now let's review from Mr. DO again. We start on DO, then say it
with me, we go up a whole step, then another whole step, then a half step, then a whole
step. When you follow that pattern of half steps and whole steps, you get a major pentascale.
Now lets pretend that Mr. DO doesn't want his family to live in the key of C anymore.
Can families move to a new house sometime? Yes, sure they can. Remember, letters can
not move, but Solfege can. Mr. DO decides that he wants to move to the key of D. So
here we go, he's going to move his whole family together, families stick together, so now
here's the whole family with Mr. DO now in the key of D. Uh oh, can you see a problem?
Remember how MI and FA are best friends? Well now they have a black key in between them.
Listen to how sad MI feels about this. Oh man, can you hear how sad MI is? DO, RE, MI,
well, fortunately Mr. DO has a solution. He builds a bunk bed for MI on this black key.
So now MI and FA are a half step apart again. See there's no key in between. You'll notice
that now RE to MI is a whole step because there is exactly one key in between. Now everyone
has their personal space who wants it, except for MI and FA who are a half step apart again.
Let's listen to see how Chocolate sounds in the key of D Major. Does everyone sound happy
again? Yes, everyone has their personal space who wants it, and MI and FA are a half step
apart again. By the way, when we shift one half step up, like this, from here to here,
we call that a sharp. So we call this note F. If we move to the black key we call this
F sharp. Well, I've done a lot of talking. It's time to play. Let's try the D Major pentascale
together. Place your right hand, finger one, on D. Finger two on E, finger three on F sharp,
finger four on G, and finger five, can you tell me the letter name of this note here?
If you said A, you are correct. Remember we have Grandma's house, this is her bedroom,
and Aunt Annie's bedroom right here for finger five. Okay, as we play, can you sing the solfege
with me, with your fingers on these keys? Let's sing and play. Ready, go. DO, RE, MI,
FA, SO, good, now let's try singing the letter names. One at a time, starting with D, E,
now remember this one is called F sharp, G, and A. Say the letter names and play with
me, ready, go. D, E, F sharp, G, A. Good job. Now let's try it with our left hand. With
your left hand finger five, cover up D, E, F sharp, G, A. Let's try the left hand, singing
solfege once and then singing the letter names. Ready, go, DO, RE, MI, FA, SO. Good, now let's
say the letter names. Ready, go, D, E, F sharp, G, A. Good, now for an extra challenge let's
try saying the letter names stepping down. A, G, F sharp, E, D. Say it and play with
me, go, A, G, F sharp, E, D. Good, now while your left hand is there, let's try and play
Chocolate in the key of D Major. So basically we've transposed Chocolate from the key of
C to the key of D. Sing the words to Chocolate with me while we play in the key of D. Go.
Yum, yum, yum, yum, yum, chocolate I have some. Good, let's try Chocolate with the right
hand in the key of D. Cover up the same notes again of the D Major pentascale. Ready, go.
Yum, yum, yum, yum, yum, chocolate I have some. Now, any song you used to play in the
C Major pentascale, it is possible to transpose that song to the D Major pentascale. For example,
now let's try Five Woodpeckers in D Major. Place finger one on D again, with finger three
on F sharp, and let's try to play Five Woodpeckers. Ready, go, woodpecker tap tap, woodpecker
tap tap, woodpecker tap tap, woodpecker tap tap, woodpecker tap tap, looking for a bug.
Yum. Now let's try Frog in the Middle transposed to the key of D, using the left hand. So with
you're left hand place finger five on D. For Frog in the Middle we only use DO, MI, and
SO. So let's try those three notes. We have DO on D. MI is on F sharp. And SO is on A,
so to play Frog in the Middle, those are the three notes we are going to need. DO, MI,
and SO. We begin on SO. Let's try playing Frog in the Middle using those three notes
now in the key of D. Ready, go, frog in the middle, frog in the sea, frog in the middle,
can't catch me. Pretty cool, huh? Great job learning about transposing and how to play
the D Major pentascale. For your practice this week I'd like you to try transposing
all of the songs you know to the D Major pentascale. In fact, if you have one hand that feels weaker
than the other, you should practice that hand even more. A pianist needs both hands to be

Hello, and welcome back. I'm Joseph Hoffman. Today we are going to learn a song called
Listen for Bells. But first, a true story for you. Many centuries ago in Europe, before
people had watches, or clocks, or iphones to tell time, there would often be near the
center of town a church with a steeple. A steeple is just a pointy tower on a church,
and that steeple would have bells that would ring to tell everyone in town what time it
was. If it was three o'clock you would hear three bongs of the bells. Or six o'clock,
six bongs. So as I play Listen for Bells for you, try and imagine that you're living in
a little town with a church, hundreds of years ago, trying to tell what time it is.
Listen for bells in the steeple to ring. Ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding.
All right, let's learn how to play listen for bells. First we need to know if the song starts
low or high. I'll sing the first few notes, and I want you to tell me if the notes are
low or high. Here goes. Buh buh buh buh buh buh. Was the first note low or high? That's
right, it had three notes down low, can you show me with your hands? Let's do it together.
Sing it with me. Buh buh buh buh buh buh. Then what do you hear next? Buh buh buh. The
next three notes go up high. Let's try it together. Buh buh buh. Good listening. Now
let's skip to the end of the song, see if you can show me with your hands how these
last four notes are moving. The last for notes are buh buh buh buh. Show me with your hands
what the notes did. If you did this, buh buh buh buh, you're correct. Now let's sing the
whole song together, and pretend that we have bells in our hands. And we'll ring the bells
low for the low notes and high for the high notes. There will actually be some notes in
the middle too, right here. Okay, here we go. Sing along with me, and ring your bells,

ding ding ding ding ding. Great, let's sing it one more time, this time with solfege and
hand signs. This song uses skipping notes just like frog in the middle. We only need
DO MI and SO. So let's try singing it together with solfege and hand signs. We start on DO.

up your right hand like me. Remember for Listen for Bells we're only using DO MI and SO. Can
you wiggle your finger that plays DO. If you wiggled your finger number one, you're correct.
We have DO, then MI here on finger three, and then SO will be here on finger five. I'll
sing a pattern by myself, then you sing it back to me and move your fingers. My turn
first. DO DO DO SO SO SO. Your turn. Good. My turn again. DO DO DO SO. Your turn to sing
and move your fingers. Good. You'll notice so far we're just going back and forth between
DO and SO. But now we get to a part where we're going to be skipping down like this.
SO MI DO SO MI DO. Your turn. Good. So we do that pattern of skipping down twice. SO
MI DO SO MI DO. Then it ends with three high SO's in a row. SO SO SO DO. Finishing with
one last DO. Now your turn to try it. Go. Good. Now let's come to the piano keys and
try it on the piano. We're going to learn Listen for Bells in the D Major pentascale.
So DO will be on D. MI will be on this F sharp played by finger three. SO will be up here
on A played by finger five. We won't need a RE or a FA for this song, but those fingers
will still just hang out. So here's DO, MI, and SO. Lets place your right hand in the
D Major pentascale. I'll play a part of the song first, then you play it back. My turn

For this song I like to use my digital piano because
the great thing about digital pianos is that you can add a drum loop like this.
You can also change the tone from piano
to something cool like electric guitar.
So I'm going to play for you the song "Chocolate" using my digital piano.

By the way I'm playing on a Casio Privia which is my personal favorite for digital pianos.
It has 88 weighted keys and weighted keys are so important to practice on

Let's review real quick what your fingers should look like when you play.
Remember they should be comfortably curved except for your thumb
which pretty much just points out straight and plays on its side tip.
As you play keep your fingers close to the keys like this.
Each finger should rest on the keys as you play.
And allow your wrist to bounce a little bit as you play each note
to help you stay relaxed.
Now press pause and try it a few more times
until you can get your fingers to look like this as you play.
Press play when you're ready to try it in the left hand.
Okay now let's place your left hand on C D E F G.
So now your pinky will be on C, and then you'll go up from there.

Remember that with the left hand just like the right hand
we want the fingers to rest on the keys in a comfortably curved shape.

You can try substituting in your own favorite food
like other than chocolate I also love curry.
So we could say yum yum yum yum yum! Curry I have some.
Or if you like pizza you could say pizza I have some.
Or apples I have some.
Think of your own favorite foods and try putting in your own words.
Another challenge I'd like to show you is playing both hands at the same time.
Remember your right hand is going to start on finger one,
while your left hand starts on its pinky finger five like this.

That's a really super challenge.
If it doesn't happen for a few days that's okay.
Just keep trying it until you get it.

Hello and welcome back, I'm Joseph Hoffman. Today we're going back to piano street to
learn how to find two more keys on the piano. Welcome back to piano street! Do you remember
where Grandma lives? That's right, she lives in a group of three black keys, and her bedroom
is this first one, here. You probably remember how poor old grandma felt lonely and so she
built a fish pond in her front yard. Well, that helped Grandma's loneliness for a time,
but soon Grandma started to think, well they look nice and all, but you can't really talk
to a fish. I still need someone I can share a good joke with. Have dinner with, you know?
Real companionship. Well, Grandma realized that she had another open bedroom in her spacious
three black key condo so she invited aunt annie to come and live with her. Aunt Annie
was delighted to accept the invitation, so this all worked out perfectly because the
letter A happens to be the next letter in the musical alphabet, right after G. All up
and down piano street, wherever there is a G, the next note has to be A. So we have G,
A, G, A, G, A, always filling up those two white keys inside the three black key house.
So to find an A on the piano, simply look for three black keys and choose the bedroom
on the right. Now press pause and practice finding all the A's on your piano. Say A out
loud whenever you find one, and play it too. When you're done, press play to go on. Now
the story continues. Everything was going along fine in Grandma's house, that is until
Aunt Annie started to feel jealous. Grandma could tell something was wrong so she asked,
and Aunt Annie said, why is it that you get a pet and I don't? Grandma replied, well why
didn't you just say so? Look, we have a back yard with plenty of room for a pet for you.
Mind, I don't allow pets in the house, so it really must stay in the back yard. Well,
Aunt Annie was delighted, and went out that very day, and bought a little pet bird, which
she kept on the back porch, right outside Grandma's house. So, to find a B on the piano,
look for the three black keys that make Grandma's house, and go out back, which is always on
the right side, the higher side, so there would be a B here. Can you find another place
for a B? That's right, there's one way up here. Now press pause and practice finding
all the B's on your piano. Say B out loud whenever you find one, and play it. When you're
finished, press play to go on. By the way, in our last Piano Street lesson, you all gave
me some great ideas for Grandma's pet in the front yard. Now can you think of any ideas
for Aunt Annie's pet in the back yard? If you get any ideas, you can leave them in a
comment below. Well, it's official! Now you know every white key on Piano Street. So let's
review. Do you remember where the doghouse is? Point to any D on Piano Street. If you're
pointing here, or here, or here, you're correct. Remember to find a D you look for the two
black keys which make the doghouse. And any white key in between two black keys is always
D. Now, can you point to any C on the piano? If you're pointing here, or here, or here,
you're correct. Remember, C is for cat, which lives right to the left of the doghouse. Now
can you point to any E on the piano? If you're pointing here, or here, or here, you're correct.
That's the elephant that broke out of the zoo to scare the mean dog back in his doghouse.
Now can you point to any G on piano street? G is for Grandma, who lives in this first
bedroom of Grandma's house. Now can you point to any A on the piano? A is for Aunt Annie,
who lives right next to Grandma in the bedroom on the right. Now, point to any F on the piano.
If you're pointing here, or here, or here, you're correct. And what letter is missing
now? If you said B, you're right. We've got this backyard outside of Grandma's house where
Aunt Annie placed her pet bird. Or whatever other pet you can think of for the other Aunts.
Now, whoa, look at this! We have the musical alphabet. Did you know that the white keys
of the piano form the musical alphabet? If we start on A, it's just the same as the alphabet
you already know. A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and then it starts over again, A, B, C, D, E,
F, G, and it could just keep on going forever. Here's a game called stepping up the street,
which I'd like you to try every day to review all the white keys. What you do is you close
your eyes, and then randomly drop on any white key. Now open your eyes and, ah, I landed
on F. So what you have to do is name the note you landed on. I can tell I'm on F because
of the three black keys. So I say F, and then I have to step up piano street and name every
note until I get to another F. I go F, G, A, B, C, D, E, F. I got to another F, so I
win one point. We're going to try and get five points. So I close my eyes again, randomly
drop on any note, aha, I open my eyes, I see that I landed on A. It's Aunt Annie's bedroom.
So I name all those notes. A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A, I made it back to A, that's two points.
I keep going until I get five points to win. Once you've mastered that, the next level
gets harder. You close your eyes, drop on any note. I landed on E. Now I have to step
down. Remember when you go down in music you're going backwards through the musical alphabet.
So now I go E, D, C, B, A, G, F, E. That's one point. And that's how to play stepping
up the street with levels one and level two. In the complete materials which you can download
from our website you can even find out how to do a level three and a level four for stepping
up the street. Today you've learned how to find A and B on the piano, and you've reviewed
the names of all the white keys. Nice work. I'd like you to keep practicing until you
get so good at naming all the white keys that you know them just as well as you know the
names of your best friends. If you practice naming them every day, using a game like stepping
up the street, you'll soon be a master at it. Later on, we'll learn how to name all
the black keys too, so be sure to keep coming back. As always, you can use the materials

Today we are learning the B section of "Dinah," just like part two of "Dinah."
Hopefully you've already practiced the A section really well,
so you're ready to learn this new part.
Let's listen to what the notes sound like first.
Okay here's what the B section sounds like.

Okay let's come to the staff to see how these notes are working.
Okay first let's draw the five notes of the G major pentascale.
This isn't part of "Dinah", I just wanted to review these five notes that we'll be using.
Good, now can you point and name these notes with me?
Say their letter names as I point. Go.
G, A, B, C, D.
These five notes will make DO, RE, MI, FA and SO in the G major pentascale.
Now this section starts on SO.
Now I'll draw the first pattern or phrase, and I'd like you to tell me what you notice.
Here I've drawn no one in the house.
What do you notice about those notes?
Did you notice they are repeating here and then a skip down here?
A step down would look like this going from a line to a space.
But a skip down skips over that space note and it goes from a line to a line.
In solfege we could sing SO SO SO SO MI.
Now, let's take a look at the next pattern and see what you notice about that.
Okay, looking at the notes over here, what can you tell me?
Did you notice that there's also four repeating notes and then a skip down?
It's the exact same pattern of repeats and skip down except
that it starts on a note a step below.
Now let's try to say how the notes are stepping, skipping or repeating.
Say it with me together. Go.
Start, repeat, repeat, repeat, skip down.
Step up, repeat, repeat, repeat, skip down.
Good, now let's look at the next pattern and to fit it on there
I'm going to squeeze all these notes together.
Okay what do you notice about these next five notes?
If you notice that it's the same pattern once again, you're correct.
We also have a start, repeat, repeat, repeat, skip down
although this time we've gone yet one more step lower.
Notice this pattern starts on SO, this pattern starts on FA,
a step lower, this pattern starts on MI, a step lower.
When we have the same pattern again and again but one step lower each time,
we call that a sequence.
So let's actually try practicing moving our fingers now
to these patterns we've just learned.
Alright, now you'll recall that this pattern starts on a SO,
and then we're going to repeat several times and then skip down to MI like this.

Good. Now the next pattern goes down to FA and it's the same pattern again.

Alright let's talk through how this whole song is put together.
When you talk about the different sections of a song,
that's call the form of a song.
And this song has two main sections, the A section and the B section.
So first we're going to play the A section which we learned in our last lesson.
Then we're going to play the B section which has two phrases,
which each repeat the exact same thing.
Here's what I mean by that.
When you play the B section, it will sound like this.
No one in the house,
no one in the house,
no one in the house but me I know.
When you get there you are not done with the B section.
You're going to play the same notes again.
No one in the house,
no one in the house,
no one in the house but me I know.
Then in the music, you'll see a symbol called D.C. al Fine.
Now D.C. stands for Da Capo so all together it's Da Capo al Fine.
Now let's try to say that together. Ready, Da Capo al Fine.
Now you can tell your friends you speak Italian.
That stands for go back to the start, and play up until you see the Fine.
And Fine is a musical word for the end of a song.
Let me show you what that symbol looks like in the sheet music to "Dinah".
Here is the sheet music to "Dinah" which you can download
as part of our complete materials from our website.
Sometimes it's helpful to have the sheet music for a song
so you can see how the sections fit together.
the A section is made up of these first two lines which we've already learned.

Now we get to the B section which goes like this.

That is Italian for Da Capo al Fine, which teleports you back to the start.
Da Capo means to the start,

Sometimes when I learn a new song,
I might practice the same song for months and months to master it.
So it's okay to practice a long time on one song so you can master it.
It will be worth it.
I want you to get amazing at playing this song.
Once you get it really good, we'll also learn how to add chords to it
in the left hand in a later lesson.
So keep practicing this, and go onto other lessons as you continue to practice "Dinah".
Remember I want you to go back and be reviewing old songs
and old lessons even as you move forward to new lessons.
So it's okay if you haven't totally mastered "Dinah" before you go on to the next lesson.

Hey guys it's Riann and welcome to this year's Music Festival Lookbook this is great for
Coachella or any other music festival you're going to this first outfit I was definitely
inspired by Southwestern vibes with this gaucho belt as well as the hat and I put on these
really funky sunglasses just to give it a little bit more of a sophisticated and fun
vibe I absolutely love these mules as well they're super comfortable so that is how I
created this first look this next look is definitely reminiscent of serious rock and
roll vibes we have these blue velvet shoes which are just seriously I mean what is more
rock n roll than blue velvet shoes I've got on a burnout Pink Floyd shirt as well as some
high waisted shorts and this is just perfect for partying it up and listening to your favorite
music this last outfit I wanted to give a little bit more of a comfortable option so
we have a slip dress with a denim jacket as well as some sneakers but I wanted to be able
to add a little bit of an unexpected element so I added these really cool Ray-Ban sunglasses

How to do More Pull Ups - Duration: 6:12.
In my previous video I showed you how to get your first pull ups.
Those methods are good for getting between 1 and 5 reps, but no more than that.
Here I'm going to tell you how to increase your maximum pull ups
if you already can do at least 5 reps.
Set an amount of time, like 5 or 10 minutes
and do as many pull ups as you can in that time.
The time limit forces you to make very short rests and that is very important when it comes to endurance training.
Note down the number of reps you did and try to beat it the next time you do that set.
You can do only one such set or more with 5 minutes of rest in between them.
Second method is very similar to the first one, but you instead of setting time limit,
you set a number of reps to do.
You want to finish as quickly as you can, so again,
you have to make very short rests between every set.
Different amounts of reps will require different strategies of strength distribution,
so be sure to alternate the number of total reps from time to time.
The next method is making use of drop sets.
Drop set is a set that consists of couple exercises arranged in decreasing difficulty.
You do max repetitions in each exercise with no rest in between them.
The idea behind it is to get your body used to long and strenuous periods of effort
that is needed in high rep sets.
Between every drop set there should be about 3 minutes of rest
and the overall number of them should be 5.
The drop set can be created in many different ways,
but I'm going to show you two example ones, harder and easier.
The last method is a little unorthodox, but works well if you are able to follow its guidelines.
It's called greasing the groove and was created by Pavel Tsatsouline.
This method is oriented on increasing your strength in a specific move.
Because of that you can greatly increase your max pull ups. How does it work?
You have to do 50% of your max repetitions in a set
and repeat this set a couple of times throughout the day.
Before every set you have to be fully rested and that means at least 15 minutes of rest.
Ideally you want to disperse the sets evenly throught the day.
For example: if you can do 6 pull ups maximum,
then you will do 3 pull ups for a set.
ou're going to do 5 sets a day, one at 8 a.m., then 11 a.m.,
2 p.m., 5 p.m., 8 p.m. Five days a week.
You can do more or less sets, but you always have to feel fully rested before doing a set.
After every week you can add one more rep to the set to gradually increase the difficulty.
It's best to create a habit to do a set every time you pass your bar,
or every time you go to kitchen or bathroom.
And that's all for now, try those methods out

2.16. The Way Forward - Duration: 4:02.
The last few weeks of videos have covered a lot of ground.
But there's a clear story that emerges from them.
What we want is a world full of happiness, health, peace, prosperity, love, well-being, fulfillment—and all that good stuff.
What we want is a world that puts the needs, dreams, and interests of the people first—
all seven and a half billion of us.
But our institutions aren't set up to do that.
They're set up to put their own interests first.
Or, at best, they're set up to maximize the good stuff that goes to some people…
but they only accomplish that by excluding or oppressing other groups of people.
Institutions are imperfect.
But they're what we have to work with.
So how do we make them as good as they can be?
We need to look at the big picture.
We need to look globally, since that's what we live in now—a global world.
What becomes clear, when you look at this big picture, is over the past 50 years,
the global economy has become much more integrated.
And that has translated into giving corporations and economic elites a big advantage,
as they pursue their own interests.
They can get their way with governments, because they can threaten to move jobs and money elsewhere,
if they don't get their way.
As a result, over the past few decades, governments have become decidedly more business-friendly,
and less people-friendly.
And we know it.
But we can't just fix this within one country.
That may help some people in the short term.
But it doesn't take away the leverage that economic elites have over governments
and the people they should be serving.
The only way to truly fix this is for the governments and people of the world to unite:
to match the level of integration in the global economy, negate the unfair advantage
economic elites currently have, and reestablish a fairer balance of power.
I'm not saying national governments need to give up all their autonomy.
But there's no reason why there can't or shouldn't be some form of international governance with real power
to address global problems, like global warming and economic exploitation.
And I'm not saying the people of the world need to give up their group identities.
But as long as we pretend some people are superior or more deserving,
based on their skin color or gender or what country they happen to be born in,
we're going to be too busy fighting with each other to hold our governments and corporations accountable.
They aren't going to put the interests of the people first on their own.
We have to make them.
And in the coming videos, we'll look at exactly how to do that.

talking about a couple of things
to do with ZERO waste and it's a bit of a dilemma I've
got and I've been chatting to my friend
Vi, so we've her we've to thank for this
little video today so and to get the
point
first of all (a) have I squashed this
TOFU too much underneath these
heavy books, that's one question, how many
books do you need to squash your Tofu?
To get the water out of it and more
importantly what do we do with all of our
plastic waste??? so we think we're doing good
by buying organic tofu i'm just going to
get this to show you organic Tofu,
here but then ... I feel really
bad because what I do with the plastic?
I put in the bin? and over here empty just
finished the washing, empty but what do I do?
do? Do our local
recyclers take these plastic bottles?
It's that sort of thing really; So short and
sweet one but .... if you want me to
contain a bit more about what's in my
kitchen here that might be nice...
so over here we've got some nice flowers
for my friend Louise and an EGG craft
which has been sitting by the back door
waiting to go into some sort of
recycling system but it's been there for
about two years because we can't bear
to get rid of it and over here
more recycling,
some Jam, peanut butter and actually
that's jam my friend - London Borough of Jam

Currently Reading Update | 16th March - Duration: 4:21.
Hi, it's Maija here, with a bit of a currently
reading update. But first I wanted to
give you a heads up that I will be
traveling to Tokyo with my sisters
starting from next week, Wednesday, and I
will be gone for almost two weeks, so
next week and the week after that I will
be on holiday. I do have one or two
videos prefilmed, including a BooktubeSFF
Babble, which I hope to be able to
put up during my vacation. So there
should be some content on this channel,
but I just wanted to give you a heads up
that I will be quieter here, because I am
in Tokyo! So that's all about that, let's
look at what I've been reading. I haven't
actually been reading that much during
this month. I took part in a couple of
read-a-thons in February and then I hit
a bit of a slump, I think, I've only been
reading some graphic novels, but I'm
reading again, and I'm actually in the
middle of three books currently. But
let's first look at this comic that I
just finished, which is The One Hundred Nights of Hero
by Isabel Greenberg. I picked this up for
the #GettingGraphic or Let's Get Graphic
read-a-thon, but I didn't get to it then,
and I just finally finished it. And it's
about these two women who are in love
and about Hero who has to tell stories
for one hundred nights to distract this evil guy.
And it was very enjoyable, quite
lovely, and most of the stories that she
tells are about sisters and I did really
enjoy that. I think I liked this better
than The Encyclopedia of Early Earth
which I read during the read-a-thon
itself. This is how the art looks. So, like
I said, I'm in the middle of three books -
one of them I'm reading with Rachel from
Kalanadi, and that is All is Fair, which
is the third Split Worlds book by Emma
Newman. This is a fantasy series that she
started writing before her science
fiction books Planetfall and After Atlas,
and she is now currently continuing with
this series again. So far I'm liking it.
Like I said, it's the third book, and I
have forgotten a lot about the second
book, but thankfully I am remembering
things when I'm reading this. So I'm like: Oh
yeah, that huge thing happened and I just
forgot about it! So this is mainly about two
worlds and the plots in between them,
the people there, and some very powerful
Fae. And I do quite enjoy reading this, I
hope this is a good one. I'm also
rereading Murder on the Orient Express
by Agatha Christie. I'm a bit more than
halfway through and I'm really enjoying
it. I have read this once before, but I'm
reading the Poirot books in order and this
one was next, so I'm rereading it now.
I think the last time I read this I gave
this three stars, but I'm thinking I'm
leaning a bit towards four stars now,
having read the earlier works of
Christie. This is of course about a
murder that happens on the train The
Orient Express, that Poirot just happens
to be on board of, and he has to figure
out who has killed the man on the train.
And then the third book that I'm reading
is The Martian by Andy Weir. I was
actually planning to read this in
February: I had a Twitter poll about what
book from a few books that I owned I
should read next, and this one won. And I
didn't start it then, but I'm now almost
halfway through and I'm really enjoying
it. It's quite fun, it's very detailed in
its explanations of how this guy is
surviving on Mars and getting water and
all sort of things. If you didn't know,
this is about a guy who is stranded on Mars,
an astronaut, so he has to try to stay
alive there. And it's written in these
journal entries of the main character,
Mark. The journal entries are often so
short that it's so easy to just read
another, and just read another. And so, I'm
enjoying this one as well. So these are
the three books that I'm currently
reading and I am enjoying all of them,
which is fun, because I haven't been
feeling like reading for a while now.
I've basically been reading Princess
Jellyfish and Akira and some other
comics. But yeah, let me know how your
