Welcome to a new episode of "Bella Italia"
It is really a new episode, because we are starting with Venice now.
You know that we took Venice out of the Italy section.
We would have taken too long and Venice was worth getting an own area,
eventhough it is only 10 square metres large.
We are know slowly starting and we will need about 8-9 months.
And we will do "Bella Italia" a little different,
because we found a little problem.
"Bella Italia" are our small and large masterpieces of our Italy section.
We have always presented them from the beginning to the end.
But we did not want to wait until the opening to show you all the videos.
So presented some of them 1-2 years earlier when the first buildings were finised.
But we could never show them in the finished exhibition.
In the end, the fantastic view with the night controlling etc. was missing.
That is why we have changed something.
In the new episode of "Bella Italia", we will accompany 8 or 9 buildings.
We will do that in a monthly update.
So in the next 8-9 months, you will see the buildings grow
and in the end, you will see how they look like in the exhibition.
And something else is new: Tobi became the boss.
Tobi created an image for himself in Italy.
And now Gerd said that you are supposed to be in charge of the technical part, didn't he?
-Exactly, I am in charge of the technical part.
-Technical means to draw a lot at the computer?
-Exactly, everything is drawn. All the buildings, the base plates and the water areas, so it will fit well to each other.
And I will make sure that the final image is good, because Venice is a little broken, a little wet, it all needs to go into the same direction.
-And then it will sink?
-Every year, it sinks a little more.
-I am excited whether it will sink in our exhibition too.
It is important to have someone who is in charge of the drawing, because we hardly have any nature in Venice.
We only have buildings, Palazzos, St. Mark's Square... Wonderful buildings that need to be constructed.
We draw them with the computer, then they are milled and then the real art starts:
Creating a beautiful building out of thousands of single pieces.
You make sure that everything works out well, fits together and is finished on time.
-I hope it works out.
-What is our goal? The end of the year?
-Let's see if we can make it until the end of the year, it is quite a lot.
-So stay tuned, there will be great episodes and we would be very happy if many of you keep watching!
We are still sitting together, because Tobi will also create a masterpiece together with Fatih.
You will draw and Fatih will put it together.
It is a very special building, because everyone, who has already been to Venice, will recognize it.
It surrounds St.Mark's Square.
The Procuratie and St.Mark's Tower.
It is a great challenge, isn't it?
-It is definitely a great challenge!
It is the biggest coherent building we have in Venice.
It surrounds the whole St.Mark's Square and the tower will be the highest building.
-Did you have to cheat with the scale?
If we would use our ordinary scale of 1:87 or 1:100, the buildings would be about 4-5m long.
Nobody wants to see that, so we need to cheat.
-Exactly. We need to compress, stretch, drag, especially in the height.
That is the challenge.
Those are the next steps, sticking to the image and still respect the restrictions concerning the space.
-Ok. And have you already drawn a lot?
-We have the basic shape and the first drafts of the important elements.
But it will still take 2-3 months until we can start milling.
-For the ones who don't know Fatih: Now you can see him.
You have joined our team 1,5 years ago and got the insane task of putting all of the 10.000 pieces together.
Is this the biggest challenge you have ever had?
-I think so, it has got so many pieces and it is the biggest building in Venice.
-Before that, you were mostly decorating, you were the one who brought St.Peter's Square to life.
- I also built the colonnades, the Spanish Steps and a few houses, but I have never built a huge building like this.
-Do you have respect, fear, confidence or a little bit of everything?
-Respect. -No fear. That is great and the right approach.
And how about the teamwork? Is everything fine?
-I really like working together with Fatih, it has already worked well at St.Peter's Basilica.
-For me it is incredible, it is the biggest building and we have planned to finish it until the end of the year.
10.000 Pieces! Even I was shocked, I did not know that until now.
I am a little afraid you will not make it until the end of the year.
-I am too, but I think, we will make it!
-In case of emergency, is there someone else in the team who is going to help you?
-We will find someone.
-They seem to be very relaxed, I think I am the only one who is nervous.
We want to finish until the end of the year or Easter in the next year so badly.
I am very excited. I see, there is the drawing. I would be very happy if you would show me something, Tobi!
-Sure! -Tobi, here you can see the Procuratie.
And this is the Venice section. it is right in the middle.
But something scares me:
The exhibition's ground level for the visitors is on a height of 80cm. This is pretty high, isn't it?
Are you able to look over it or will you not be able to see what happens on the square?
-This really is a problem that we still need to solve, it will be very high.
-Do you have a feeling how high?
-I am not sure yet, we have just done an approximate scaling and it already rises up out of the other buildings.
It is very difficult to look inside. You can see it a little better from the other side...
-Because it is a little more flat on this side?
-It is more flat and with the help of our railing's steps, you could look over it.
-Show me the horizontal view again.
That means this angle is also not possible, although you can see the the tower, you cannot see the square.
That means we need to keep in mind to install higher steps.
-Exactly, so you can look over it and see what is happening on the square.
-Exciting! You can see that we have shrunk Venice a little bit.
But there are the most important elements: St.Mark's Square, Procuratie, Basilica, St.Mark's Tower.
I think it looks great! I am very excited. -Me too, if everything will work out.
Now we are with Julia. Julia has also been in our team for only 1,5 years now.
She joined us in the middle of the Italy section and first built houses in the Tuscany.
-Exactly!
-Have you been nervous?
-The first house was really a challenge, but then it went smoothly.
-I asked you that question, because your task is the Rialto Bridge, something everyone, who has already been to Venice, knows.
Beside St.Mark's Square, St.Mark's Basilica etc., it is a real highlight.
So you are not supposed to make any mistakes, but is it still a nice challenge?
-It is! You can finally work on all the details you usually have to leave out.
-It is one of the most beautiful and famous bridges in the world and you create it.
-Exactly!
-I see, those are the arcades. You put them on this side so you can enter them from here.
Are there also six of them in reality or did you need to cheat because of the scale?
-There are also six in reality, but they are a little compressed.
-So they were broader before? -Yes.
-Can you make it bigger again? Is this the Grand Canal below?
There is this rumour that you will get luck when you kiss beneath it.
Beneath or on the bridge?
-Beneath, but I am not quite sure. -Do you know that? Beneath or on it?
I have heard beneath it, you probably need to pass it with a gondola.
Please comment whether you know it, have already done that and whether it brought you luck. I am very interested in that!
Teresa will build it, have you already decided whether you will give her all pieces at once, which would be a lot
or piece by piece so she can already start? She is waiting, isn't she?
-She waits until I give her all the pieces and explain my thoughts on them and how they fit together.
-This is special: It needs to be drawn and milled first.
You could think that with all the amazing technology, milling, printing etc. you just need to push a button and it is finished.
No, it first needs to be drawn and then, thousands of pieces need to be put together and decorated.
So you might ask: What is easier?
To build it by improvising or by using hightech?
It is an insane work and insane love. We will keep you updated.
Now Teresa, who built the Colosseum, this huge building, is with us.
This is my first question: How do you motivate yourself for building such a small bridge after having constructed the Colosseum?
-I think it is more beautiful, it is clearer and something different.
-To be honest, this was a joke, because it is the Rialto Bridge! I would be very excited.
Are you looking forward to it? -Yes! -There is a lot expecting you!
The bridge has got many little pieces.
Do you have an interim project or are you just waiting for Julia to finish?
-I am creating a hospital for Hamburg first and then I will contine here.
-We are very excited, Teresa will definitely do great work and we will accompany her!
And in this episode, we will also start with another highlight to complete St.Mark's Square.
The Basilica di San Marco, St.Mark's Basilica.
Then all the highlights at St.Mark's Square will be perfect.
Sven, who has been in our team for more than 10 years now, will create it. He is very good at drawing and milling.
Is the construction of such a building still a highlight for you or is it already routine?
-It is a highlight! Before that, we have done all the "filling-objects" for Venice.
It is very nice to construct something detailed like this again.
-And you are allowed to shrink. -I have to shrink.
-Because it does not fit? -It never fits!
-You have made everything fit that did not fit before since ten years. -Exacty.
-Does it always work out in a way that it still looks harmonic afterwards?
-I think in the end, when it is finished, everyone will recognize it and say it looks great!
-Tobi builds the St.Mark's Tower next to it, are you talking to each other, so it will look harmonic?
-Yes! -Are there different scales, are you cheating so the visitor will think that everything is beautiful?
This is the big problem: The visitor who is watching the scene is supposed to think that everything is perfect.
But in order to make it look perfect, we sometimes use different scales.
Was that correct? -That was very well explained.
I think that Tobi will have an advantage, because when you look at Venice, St.Mark's Tower is rising up out of it.
He does not need to cheat that much.
We need to adapt to these striking visual points.
That means if some roof ridges are running on the same height, they will also do it in our building.
Or maybe with a difference of a few millimetres, nobody will realize that.
-Knowing that you work together makes me feel better, very nice!
And Michel ist building it?
Michel built the big Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele, this beautiful building in Rome.
He is already an expert.
Have you talked to each other?
Did he say: "I don't like this part" or how do you do it in such a case?
I could also ask him personally, he will be here soon.
-In the moment we are just about to start and he already knows a lot. He will have to construct a lot with figures, there are many reliefs.
He has already trained that with the model he built in Rome.
We will now try to work in the same way and work closely together as a team.
-I am excited, I will ask him.
Now Michel is here and he is allowed to put thousands of pieces together that he will get from Sven.
Just like you did at the Monumento, where you let me help you.
Have you already checked whether there will be some statues I can ruin?
-I cannot tell you exactly what is waiting for me, but I am sure we will find something.
-Or have you already replaced the statue I created? -No, it is till there.
-Like some kind of memorial?
-Just like you have done it.
-I would like to help you again, it would be great if you would have an idea. -Of course!
-Do you think you can make it until Christmas/ the beginning of next year?
We want to be finished so badly because the bridge is coming soon
-It is a little smaller than the Monumento, so I think it is possible.
It is easier to handle, but it has got more details. But I think I should make it.
-It is a highlight everyone knows, as a special exeption, you should do some good work.
-Just as a special exception.
I have never been to Venice, I have to make sure that I am able to rebuild the building's charme.
-Of course this was a joke, the Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele turned out to be amazing, especially the aging and the shadows!
You did an awesome job, especially because you have just joined our team!
That is why you got this project. I am very excited!
I think it is great and I would be very happy to help you again. We will accompany you.
Sven, we need to talk about the drawing.
In my opinion, it looks like a nuclear power station.
-Really? I thought it looks more like a throwing game for halos.
-Like this game for children with these five towers.
-These are supposed to be the columns.
-But you can't throw something on them, they will get broken.
But this is a funny idea, could you animate it?
Making them fly by using lasers or something like that?
-Laser? That would cut the towers into pieces again.
I don't know, I need to ask someone. -But it is a funny idea.
Good that the camera is turned off right now and not recording our discussion.
Great, this is a basilica!
So this is the basic shape and you still need to draw all the decorations around it.
-Exactly, I was first looking for the basic shape und the proportions.
Now I can start with the decoration, like those little towers.
-Is this an image from the internet? -Yes.
-You have to show it again to present how much work is waiting for you.
If you can produce something close to that, it will be a real highlight.
-Michel could already train for it, he needs to carve figures again.
We will try to finish what we have started in Rome.
I am so excited, we will accompany you!
Procuratie, Procuratie... Around St.Mark's Square, there are the Pocur...
Around St.Mark's Square, there are the Poruc...
Because everyone, who has already been to Venice, knows them: Around St.Mark's Square, there are the Procra...
You will have to say this word a few more times today!
Here are St.Mark's Tower and the Provocations.
It is something very special and... Was it wrong?
Procuratie!
-Procuratie... Around St.Mark's Square, there are the Purocr...
-I liked it! -That was billiant!
-Procuratie. Pro-cu-ra-tie
Procura. Procura.
... Bella Italia with a very special masterblblb...
St.Mark's Basilica... I need to breathe.
The Basilica di San Marco or St.Martin's Basilica at St.Mark's Square...
-Stop! St.Mark's Basilica, not St.Martin's Basilica.
-What did I say? Martin?
The Basilica di San Marco or St.Mark's...
What our old-established draughtsman builds today is the Basilica... -Basilica di San Marco?
Or also called St.Mark's Basilica? -Exactly! Just like I said!
The Basilica di San Marco or also Martin...
Ouch!
Something very special, because everyone knows it!
This is great about Venice, you know all the buildings!
