Germany, you are totally pranking me, aren't you?
Hey everyone! I'm Dana and you're watching Wanted Adventure Living Abroad.
I'm someone who often gets attached to a particular food, and then for a while I really,
really love that food.
Which, for most of my life, was never really a problem.
I would go weeks enjoying one particular chocolate or dessert more than any other; rotating through
the same few meals and snacks each week for several months at a time.
Until I moved to Germany, where I find myself constantly, over and over and over again choosing
the wrong food.
Or maybe the wrong food chooses me.
I don't know.
Either way, the outcome is the same.
Step one: I discover a delicious food at the grocery store.
Step two: I buy it a few times, and I fall in love with it.
Step three: I begin incorporating the food into my weekly food plan.
And step four: It magically disappears, never to be seen or heard from again.
Now, if this had happened to me once or twice, I probably wouldn't have even noticed.
But since living in Germany it has happened to me an incredible number of times, to the point
where now I just kind of expect it.
If I find something at the store that I really, really like and want to incorporate into my
weekly food routine, I just kind of assume the company must be planning to pull it soon.
So, here are some of the foods that have gone poof
and magically disappeared on me here in Germany.
Lindt Hello My Name is Peanut Butter.
For a few precious months in 2014, these chocolate truffle ball things existed in so many stores.
They were all over the place.
Hard milk chocolate on the outside, rich creamy peanut butter on the inside.
Good thing that I ate a lot of them when I had the chance because then without any warning,
one day I went to go buy them from the grocery store that had had them for months, and poof
they were gone.
Luckily I was able to find them at some other stores for a few more weeks -- I went searching
for them all around town, but eventually those stocks dried up too, and I have never seen
them since.
Same thing happened with dark chocolate peanut M&Ms.
They existed at the stores in Munich for weeks, then vanished without a trace,
haven't seen them since.
For about a week, one grocery store nearby stocked Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, even
had them out by the checkout lane.
But that was really short lived.
They were gone by the next week.
For a long time a department store stocked American-style mac-n-cheese in a box.
I didn't eat it often, but when I was sick with a cold or just really needed some comfort
food, I will admit, I was very grateful to have it.
Then one day, I went to go buy it, only to find out that the store had stopped carrying it,
and I haven't been able to find it in any of the grocery stores or department stores
in Munich since.
One place has started carrying a knock-off box of mac-n-cheese, which I bought one time
out of absolute desperation.
But, no. It...no. It just wasn't right.
I also scared away some delicious chia snack bars.
So I'm sorry to everyone else for that because they were really, really good.
And I even called it that time.
We went to the store a few weeks ago, and I happened upon some really tasty, low sugar,
high-nutrition snack bars, great for on the go.
I said, wow, these things are perfect.
Exactly what I've been looking for when I'm out and about filming.
Those are the magic words.
I know they'll be gone soon.
And sure enough, I think I only had time to buy one or two boxes of the things before
they vanished from the store without a trace.
One that I was was really frustrated to see go was a chili con carne that I found.
Made locally in Munich with fresh, simple ingredients.
I think it was even organic.
And so, so tasty.
Two or three weeks in a row I bought it to have over potatoes and french fries.
It was so good.
And I was just planning to add it to my weekly menu when...gone!
And as I said, I wasn't even that surprised.
At this point it's just like, yeah figures, of course.
The store actually still carries a bunch of other soups by the same company, but as soon
as I discovered the chili con carne, they decided to stop carrying it.
And one time, I'm even so talented or powerful at this, that I even managed to scare away
a whole store.
When I first moved to Munich there was a Häagen-Dazs ice cream store downtown.
Mr. German Man and I used to go there all the time.
There was this one flavor in particular that I really loved.
But, yeah, I think you've probably already guessed where this is going...that store no
longer exists.
And an honorable mention goes to the TGI Fridays restaurant in Berlin, which I somehow managed
to scare away even before ever going there.
A few years ago I was really craving buffalo wings, and I knew that TGI Fridays has some
locations in Europe and serves buffalo wings, so I looked up if there were any chains in
Germany, and I found one in Berlin.
Yay, how exciting.
Well, it didn't work out for me to go to Berlin for a while.
And I guess sometime between me finding out that a TGI Fridays existed in Berlin, and
me actually going to Berlin...the restaurant closed.
Because when I showed up at the location with Mr. German Man, all ready and excited for
my buffalo wings, it turned out that the place
had been turned into a completely different restaurant.
And it was extra teasing because the new restaurant still looked a lot like TGI Fridays, the interior
hadn't really been changed, so I could still see the shell of the old restaurant, but the
menu was totally different.
It was like, so close...and yet so far away.
Germany, I just found this yogurt that I really like.
Don't even think about it.
So my question for you is: Has this ever happened to you?
Or am I the only one chasing food away?

Figures, you know...yeah, yeah, yeah.
Dark-chocolate peanut butter...peanut, peanut, not peanut butter.
Same thing happened with dark-chocolate peanut butter...peanut!
Each week for several months in a row...until I moved to Germany.
