This isn't the greatest video ever, but I thought that I would try to capture some form of video...
...so I could give some information on the character Minato Namikaze in Gekitou Ninja Taisen Special.
Let's begin!
The general idea behind Minato is speed.
His combos are fast and allow him to even teleport in the middle of his combo strings, knocking the opponent in all directions.
This isn't a tricky maneuver... It is just his default B combo (in this video, I'm assuming that anyone watching is using the Nintendo Gamecube or Classic Controllers. For Nunchuck style movements, weak attacking is done by shaking the Wii controller and strong attacks/ninjutsu are the A button).
Other combos allow him to teleport as well.
These combos can usually connect even if the player is pressing late or delaying the combo string.
Minato's speed during combos is dependent on the timing of the delay.
Too slow-- you'll miss
Well-timed delay during a combo string creates space...
...and can end up knocking the opponent to a wall
--a helpless state.
Back+BBBB, delayed slightly creates a large amount of space between you and the opponent.
Up+BBA (normal, no delay)
Up+BBA(same combo, faster, no delay)
Up+BBA (same combo, but too slow)
Up+BBA, delayed, by waiting before tapping A to throw kunai, creates much more space between Minato and the opponent.
When they do not roll to avoid falling, Minato can lead straight into another combo string, regardless if it connects to the opponent at start.
...and continue to pummel an unprepared opponent.
Minato's Special Jutsu (奥) is a kunai, and not a melee attack.
(Hidan is possibly the only other character who possesses a Special Jutsu that can be thrown and is based around that particular weapon)
It is a projectile which can travel across the stage and (I believe) while it can be dodged, it is unblockable and it cannot be deflected
I can only guess as a way to "balance" Minato, his Special Jutsu is very weak and doesn't deal much damage at all.
(Bear with me. There is lots of pausing in the next several parts of the video as I was doing this alone and with a second controller plugged in most of the time)
Normally. Minato has several notable openings during the start of his combo strings...
...where he's stuck in attack-ending lag and can't move or defend himself. His better default combos have this.
Previous example: Jump+B,B (the ending B is punishable if blocked)
Example: Back+BBBB Combo 4
(the third B is very punishable when blocked)
Example: BBBBBB his basic combo, Combo 1
the third B is punishable and leaves Minato in lag when blocked by the opponent.
Example: Down+BBB(A)
The instant Minato teleports, he is invulnerable, but when he reappears, he isn't moving yet. The opponent can dodge. Also at this moment, Minato is completely open to any counterattack.
Minato's Forward+A move, the Rasengan, is blockable and leaves him stuck in lag and completely vulnerable when blocked.
When his health reaches around 30%, or less, Minato gains a crisis maneuver (or Senzai Ninriki). This is a special ability that gives players an exclusive and unique ability during battle when in a tight situation.
He can place a kunai on the ground by pressing Down+X or Down+Down Direction on the D-Pad for Nunchuk Style) and teleport to it at will.
He can teleport to and from in front of or behind the opponent....
...and can follow up with attacks after teleporting.
...as well as teleport from long range....
...and can even teleport to long range while attacking (or defending). The input for teleporting is Back+X or Back+Down Direction on the d-pad for Nunchuk Style.
Now, this is where things get rather interesting. I'm probably not the first to discover this, but I see no information on it whatsoever on the internet.
There seems to be a glitch in the game where Minato can combo cancel...without having to combo cancel......
Let me explain...
I'm just going to explain what combo cancelling is and how it functions in and applies to Clash of Ninja.
Starting with GekiNin 4, combo cancelling allows the player to press Y, (C on the Nunchuk in EX games), instantly end a combo string and restart a new one.
Combo cancelling began as unpolished and very arbitrary with what can or can't be cancelled initially.
Later games (specifically EX 2 and Revolution 2) radically redesigned the cancelling application and made chakra gain after the hit performed relative to what move was performed after cancelling.
(Sorry for the idiotic background noise made by my older brother............)
As you can see, combo cancelling can be used to string long combos together to punish vulnerable opponents, or as a way to connect separate moves and mechanics, such as an air throw.
It can be used as a way to deal damage before a person has a chance to hit the ground with Sasori or Naruto as well.
**EX 3**
Combo cancelling is more than an offensive strategy.
By cancelling a combo early, (that lifts your opponent into the air), you can try to read into their escape strategy or predict them using a substitution jutsu attack.
Avoid the attack by sidestep or backflip and attack the opponent once they are open due to either missing the substitution attack or by you being ready to strike when they reappear from an escape tactic.
Another usage for cancelling combos is to stop opponents from being able to use a Substitution altogether.
(You need to pause this) In this example, the third hit of Killer Bee's basic BBBBB launches Naruto in the air. If I continue the combo, he will escape by Substitution. However, cancelling the third hit, and going straight into a Jump+A attack deals damage, and more than enough to finish off his small amount of health. It's also much faster to do this than pull off a standard combo since cancelling and acting right out of the cancel narrows the window of opportunity for escape.
(Pause again) So, in review, combo cancelling in Clash of Ninja allows you to keep an opponent in a juggle even after the default combo has ended. The mechanic also has a lot of applications and leads to a lot of differing techniques with the characters but the three stipulations are that your character must be FULLY GROUNDED, it always cost 25% chakra and the combo string can only be cancelled if it can launch the opponent in mid-air.
Keeping all of that in mind.... I believe that the game still reads the input for Minato's crisis maneuver (the teleporting kunai) even if no kunai is in play.
When the input (Back+X) is perfomed while Minato is attacking, Minato is frozen and forced back into his starting position. So this allows Minato to cancel combos at nearly any point and restart them.
This leads to several mixups strategies and ways to pressure and eventually overpower your oppponent.
For example, normally, BBB, the basic combo, will leave Minato vulnerable. Knowing how to use the Special cancel...
....you can trick the opponent. Leave yourself open, make the opponent think they can attack and win safely because your are both vulnerable and on low health....
...then use the BBB combo again, BUT cancel it.
The opponent may think you are just re-using the same unsafe combo then try to finish the match with a counter attack. Immediately cancel BBB, then go right into a new combo. (Using a sidestep may also be more safe against seasoned players).
Another example would be to once again use the unsafe BBB, but then substitute (L), then trick the opponent.
The cancel glitch introduces some defensive tactics as well, such as...
....
...well, just some AA+Back+X spamming.... -__-
...or using AA+Back+X into Back+A to counter after a substitution, usually to gain some ground against a strong melee character.
...or cancelling into Back+A in a pinch...
...or a wide variety of combos.
**Setting it to "Guard"**
The cancel glitch makes Minato particularly overpowering.
...
As you can see, blocking is totally useless against Minato.
All of Minato's crisis (Senzai Ninriki) abilities apply in Tag Team battles.
In fact, I'd even argue that in Tag Team, Minato's glitch has even more applications and...quirks.
There's really one big reason why I think the cancel thing with Minato is a glitch. For one thing, unlike all of his other speedy moves, no effect is shown when pressing the Back+X to cancel a move. Also his model itself turns...."stilted" when doing the move. Minato's model doesn't just reset to standing position, he JOLTS back with almost no warning.
Next, whenever Down+BB is cancelled by the glitch, Minato becomes freakishly slow. To the point where certain combos will not be able to connect.
I have found a few ways to use his completely glitchy slow speed to my advantage...
But....performing the Special Jutsu with Minato while he is stuck in the "cancel glitch slowdown..."
...
leads to a Special Jutsu cinematic that is broken as hell.
As you can see, while stuck in the slow motion, Minato can't perform any combos and I can't even connect a Jump+B to his Team Special Jutsu without timing it exactly right.
Even when you do land the Team Jutsu, the results....
...are shockingly more busted up than the normal Special Jutsu. By the way....
...Killer Bee cannot move even when the jutsu cinematic ends.
I've officially broken this game.
???!?
So back to Minato's crippling flaw with the glitch cancel.....
Not a single move or combo works after you cancel Down+BB.
Somehow, Minato can still continue to use the cancel glitch while still hampered by slowdown because of the cancel glitch...................................................
While cancelling still works...
...switching will not get rid of Minato's slow motion.
The only way to fix the glitch slowdown is to re-use the full Down+BBB combo. Then, Minato is back to normal.
It is still fun to play around with Minato and see what new defense tactics or utterly devastating combos you can come up with. "The sky's the limit, " so they say.
**Rasengan can also be cancelled....and repeated infinitely**
**Just as proof that these crisis techniques are actually possible in real battle, CPU was set to level 3**
