"How to Develop a Healthy Gut Ecosystem"
As I've explored before, whether you're young or old,
male or female, smoker or non, high blood pressure, low blood pressure,
high cholesterol or low, having high levels of a toxic compound
called TMAO--trimethylamine oxide—
in one's blood stream is associated with a significantly higher risk
of having a heart attack, stroke, or dying over a 3 year period.
Where does TMAO come from?
The choline in foods like eggs can be turned by gut bacteria into TMAO,
which is then absorbed back into our system,
and the more eggs we eat the higher the levels climb.
Given the similarity in structure between carnitine and choline,
the same group of Cleveland Clinic researchers wondered
if carnitine, found in red meat, energy drinks, and supplements,
might also lead to TMAO production,
so they put it to the test.
If you feed someone a steak their TMAO levels shoot up.
Now this was someone who regularly ate meat.
Those who eat strictly plant-based
may start out with almost no TMAO in their system,
presumably because they're not eating any meat, eggs, or dairy,
but even if the vegan eats a sirloin almost no TMAO is made.
Why?
Presumably, they don't have steak-eating bacteria in their guts.
No TMAO is produced if you don't have TMAO producing bacteria in your gut.
If you don't regularly eat meat, then you're not fostering the growth
of the meat-eating microbes that produce TMAO.
This suggests that once we develop a plant-based gut ecosystem,
our bacteria will not produce TMAO
even if we eat meat every once in awhile.
However, we still don't know how rapidly gut bacteria shifts
after a shift in our diet,
but it does not appear to be all or nothing.
If you take men eating the standard American diet
and have them eat two sausage, egg, and cheese biscuits
before and after just 5 days of eating lots of high fat meals like that
you can boost TMAO production even higher.
So it's not just, do you have the bad bugs or not,
you can apparently breed more of them the more you feed them.
On the other hand, meat-free diets have been demonstrated
to have a profound influence on human metabolism.
You can analyze a urine sample and tell what kind of diet people eat
based on measurements like how low their TMAO levels are
in the urine of those eating egg-free vegetarian diets.
You can even take the same people and rotate them through 3 different diets
and you can tell who is who.
Who is on a high meat, low meat, or no meat diet,
in part based on the different compounds
churned out by the different gut flora or different flora activity
after just about two weeks on the different diets.
It's possible that some of the beneficial effects of whole plant foods
may be mediated by the effects they have on our gut bacteria.
At the same time, the standard American diet
may increase the relative abundance of undesirables
that produce toxic compounds including the cardiotoxicant TMAO.
Strictly plant-based diets have gained acceptance as a dietary strategy
for preventing and managing disease;
perhaps in part because of their rather unique gut flora,
less of the disease-causing bacteria and more of the protective species.
So all along we thought the reason those eating plant-based
had lower heart disease rates
was because they were eating less saturated fat and cholesterol,
but maybe their lower TMAO levels
may also be contributing to their benefits
thanks to the reduction of ingestion of carnitine and choline.
I talked about the egg industry response to the choline revelation.
How has the carnitine supplement industry reacted?
The former VP of Advocare, a multilevel marketing company
that sells carnitine supplements like "Slam"
while getting slammed with lawsuits, finding them for example
guilty of false, misleading or deceptive practices,
forced to pay over a million dollars
in response to the research implicating carnitine in TMAO production
he questioned whether there was a secret vegan conspiracy at the Cleveland Clinic.
Restricting our intake of meat or carnitine supplements
to prevent our gut bacteria from making TMAO, he argues,
"is like trying to prevent car accidents by restricting the sale of fuel."

which may be fueling our epidemic of heart disease,

Saving Peru's Archaeological Sites is a Community Job | National Geographic - Duration: 4:42.

In Peru it is very common that archaeological sites
are surrounded by local communities,
villages, towns, where people live
usually in the most traditional ways.
Pachacamac is a huge archaeological site south of Lima.
Around it we have three million people
living in shanty towns,
in one of the poorest sectors of Lima,
always threatening to encroach and jump into the site.
We need to engage with them and interact with them
in ways in which they feel
that this site is not subtracting from them
but is adding to their lives.
Local communities can and should be
the first line of defense for these archaeological sites
that are not only part of their heritage but,
if properly developed, like here,
they can become sources of income for them.

SPI stands for Sustainable Preservation Initiative.
This is an initiative that started
with archaeologists interested in developing better means
to protect cultural heritage.
We have now six programs around Peru
in different communities in the highlands and the coast.
What we do is we have engaged women
that live around the sites.
These women are some of the most traditional people
living in the coast of Peru.

More proof on the death of Kim Jong-nam, the half brother of North Korea's leader.
A video of his son claiming his father was murdered... was posted online.
Hwang Hojun takes a closer look.
A YouTube video emerged on Tuesday featuring a man claiming to be the son of Kim Jong-nam,
the half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
"My name is Kim Han Sol, from North Korea, part of the Kim family."
Korea's National Intelligence Service says it has confirmed the man is Kim Jong-nam's
son.
In the video, titled "KHS Video," the man displays his passport to prove his identity,
but most of it is blacked out.
He then claims his father was murdered, dismissing North Korea's claims to the contrary.
"My father has been killed a few days ago.
I'm currently with my mother and my sister.
We are very grateful to..."
...and the audio cuts off.
The 40-second-long video was uploaded onto the YouTube page of a group called Cheollima
Civil Defense, which also uploaded it to its website.
The group claims that it will help and protect anyone who wishes to flee from North Korea
and says that it has already done so for many people without seeking any rewards.
The group posted a statement along with the video that says the group is protecting members
of Kim's family upon their request,... adding that "the present whereabouts of this family
will not be addressed."
It also said this is its first and last statement on the matter.
The group also thanked countries that it claimed helped it provide protection for Kim's family,
including the Netherlands, China, the U.S. and an unnamed fourth country.
The group also singled out Netherlands ambassador to South Korea for his involvement and humanitarian
response.
Kim Jong-nam was killed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport last month by two suspects carrying
the deadly nerve agent VX.
North Korea has repeatedly disparaged the investigation, accusing Malaysia of colluding
with its enemies.
It also wants the Malaysian government to hand over Kim Jong-nam's body, but Malaysia
rejected the request, insisting that it can only be claimed by the person's
his next-of-kin.

Jee-hyun, can we finally say farewell to the cold?
Yes, Daniel.
We'll have spring warmth back starting tomorrow afternoon.
Temperatures across the country will begin to rise tomorrow.
What's more, double digits are expected for Friday's afternoon highs, and the warming
trend will continue for the time being.
But you will still need to dress in layers for tomorrow's morning commute.
Seoul and Daejeon will start out at minus 2 degrees Celsius, and Busan will have a low
of 1 degree.
We will get more sunshine and winds will weaken tomorrow.
The daily high in Seoul will reach 9 degrees Celsius, while Daegu and Jeju Island will
top out at 13 degrees Celsius.
In the meantime, dry weather advisories are expanding to more parts of the eastern regions,
so be mindful of these alerts.

China amps up economic retaliation against Korea - Duration: 6:19.
China's economic retaliatory measures on Korea are only escalating by the day.
And given heavy economic reliance Korea has on China,… concerns over the impact on the
Korean economy is mounting.
For more on how much this means for the local economy, our economic correspondent Shin Se-min
joins me in studio.
Good to have you on, Always a pleasure.
1- Let's begin by taking a closer look at some of the impact we're already seeing on
the economic side.
The Chinese authorities have yet to confirm, or acknowledge the economic restrictions on
Korea,... but, we are seeing some of the changes on that front, right?
Of course, the most evident impact can be seen in the streets of Seoul,… especially
in shopping districts like Myeongdong and at tourist attractions like royal palaces,
sites that used to be jammed-packed with tourists from China.
Now, the scene is totally different.
The Cultural Heritage Administration says the daily average number of visitors to ancient
palaces in Seoul had plunged by over 35-percent in the first five days this month, compared
to the same period the month before.
And a local hotel in Seoul saw its booking ratio by Chinese slip to 20-to-30 percent
from its average 40-percent.
But again, it's still too early to tell.
We're going to be able to see the full-scale impact of Beijing's apparent retaliatory measures
starting from the 15th of this month,… exactly a week away from today,… because that's
the day that the Chinese Tourism Administration had ordered its travel agencies to stop selling
trips to Korea.
And mind you, these tourists had made up for 60-to-70 percent of sales from duty-free shops
in Seoul last year,… so the amount of losses is expected to be substantial.
2- Korean firms doing business in China are also heavily affected, too.
Yes.
Across mainland China, already half of all Lotte Mart offline stores have been shut down,…
and the number is only increasing by the day.
According to Lotte Group, the branches of Lotte Mart in China have been closed as they
failed to comply with fire safety regulations,… some of which came into effect just a couple
of days after China's Xinhua news agency reported that the THAAD deployment could quote-unquote
"turn into a nightmare for Lotte."
And this specifica retaliation on Lotte seemingly comes as the group swapped its golf course
with Korea's military for the THAAD battery to be stationed.
3- So,… with these apparent economic restrictions ratcheting up,… how big of a fallout are
we expecting?
Though it's still too early to tell,... a local economic research institute said today,...
that should China kick these measures into higher gear,... then it would represent about
15-billion U.S. dollars in losses for Korea.
The IBK Economic Research Institute said the THAAD impact could pull down the nation's
growth rate by 1-point-0-7 percentage points.
It added that Korea's economy may be faced with zero-point-5-9 percent on-year drop of
its annual GDP, or nearly 7-point-7 billion dollars of losses,… this, if Korea ends
up losing about half of its Chinese tourists on an annual basis.
A separate report by Credit Suisse says something similar.
It predicts some 7-point-3 billion dollars of losses,… and zero-point-5-3 percent on-year
drop of its annual GDP.
But, these measures are just based on the assumption that only Korea's exports to China
and the country's local tourism business are hit by the retaliatory measures.
But these are just estimates, so we have to wait and see until we have a better picture
of some of the fallouts.
4- What about other sectors?
Could there be more fallouts coming from the THAAD deployment on the local economy?
China is Korea's largest business partner.
Just last year alone, Korea's total exports to China were about 124 billion dollars, or
over 25-percent of entire exports.
China's restrictions on the trade front have yet to shore up.
But with much of these exports to China being intermediary goods made in Korea,... many
Chinese manufacturers won't have much option in terms of finding a new supplier for semi-conductors
and chemical products.
This is why a local analyst says the retaliatory economic sanctions could likely be temporary.
"The restrictions won't go as far as to reach a point they would hurt China's own economy.
In other words, these may be temporary, a show of resistance against the THAAD deployment.
It's still early in the stages, but Chinese authorities are well aware that these sanctions
won't be just Korea's problem."
5 What can we do at this point?
What are some of the ways to overcome this situation, at the governmental and business
levels?
The Korean government could go to the WTO, World Trade Organization, and report China's
economic retaliations.
Seoul's trade ministry said today that although they have not made a final decision yet, they
are considering putting up a claim in several industries,… while going about reviewing
international law for proper action.
At the same time, refocusing in other overseas markets is also a must.

should take place faster than before.
Korean companies should seek for opportunities in emerging economies in Southeast Asia as
well as in Latin America,... where Hallyu still attracts stronger consumer power."
Meanwhile, already many shops in Seoul have changed their target customers and are now
focusing on tourists from other nations such as Malaysia and Taiwan, a tactic necessary
to balance out the sector's dependence on the much larger Chinese group.

or a rushed election.

Cardiff University: Accessible 3D printed microfluidic devices - Ultimaker: 3D Printing Story - Duration: 4:23.
Fluids behave quite differently at the microscale
and this enables us to do experiments that we would otherwise not be able to do
In the laboratory, at the moment we have 3 focus areas of research
which all have a common requirement for producing spherical capsules
The first is in nuclear fusion energy production
where we need small capsules for putting the nuclear fuel in
The second is where we're making protocells, or artificial cells, for studying membrane-protein interactions
and the third is where we're studying encapsulation of the stem cells to go in the spinal cord
to repair your damaged spinal cord if you've been in a car crash
A microfluidic system can be compared to a large-scale plumbing system, say in this building
but reduced in size, onto a chip
Very small tubes delivering fluids to different types of sensors and other actuators in the system
So we can design small circuits to move around small volumes of fluid
generally using techniques borrowed from the microelectronics industry
Recently, we started using 3D printing to make these microfluidic devices
and that has many benefits because it enables us to make microfluidic devices very rapidly
so we can iterate and make new designs and improve upon those designs very rapidly
It also enables us to make things cheaply
Because these printers are cheap and affordable, it's a technology that we can share with our collaborators
and bring microfluidic technology to other people and other researchers who wouldn't otherwise be using it
Traditional microfluidic techniques require very expensive equipment
and also a great deal of knowledge of how to use that equipment
So that puts a lot of people off
whereas with 3D printing, you just need to be able design it on a computer
which is fairly simple to learn
and then press a button and walk away, and then you come back and your device is ready to use
It's also beneficial that you can incorporate it with more traditional techniques quite easily
you can plug it into existing fittings that are readily available
We begin with the very simple modular building blocks; just tubings and junctions
From there, we expanded that to a wider range of different types of microfluidics
We used those different design systems to make a modular system that's based on Lego
that anyone can print out and click them together and make their own microfluidic systems
Previous researchers have discounted this type of printing because they found that it leaked
and they couldn't see through it
But by refining the print characteristics I found that if you avoid under extrusion
you can make the devices both transparent and water-tight
To avoid under extrusion, you have to print quite thin layers and you have to print quite slowly
So 50-micron layers at speeds of 30 millimeters a minute or less
The same techniques that make them water-tight also beneficially make them transparent
because the gaps in between the device are what cause you to lose transparency
We're pleased with what we've been able to achieve with 3D printing for microfluidics so far
but what we're really looking forward to is
as the diversity of the materials with which you can print expands
and the resolution of the printers improves
being able to make not just fluidic circuits, but integrate optical and electronic components also
This will enable us to print multifunctional devices from multiple materials in one single device
We're working with researchers from a range of fields around the world
and 3D printing really allows us to be able to send the design to another laboratory
We're working with people in Italy, for example
and we're able to send them designs that they can print out in their labs
conduct experiments and report back the results the very same day
It really makes the process much simpler so that everyone can access the benefits of microfluidics
The beautiful thing about 3D printing is that potentially everybody can have them
Any other walk of life, a hospital, a biological laboratory, anywhere really - everybody can use them
It democratizes the technology of making things

N. Korea feels squeeze after it's cut off from Chinese telecom, global financial transaction service - Duration: 2:28.
North Korea will now no longer be able to buy equipment from Chinese telecom giant Z-T-E,
after the company was hit with a record 1-point-2-billion-dollar fine on Tuesday for trading with the regime,...
while reports emerged that three North Korean banks were cut off from an international financial
transaction service earlier this year.
Kwon Jang-ho shows us how the reclusive staet continues to paint itself to a corner.
China's second largest telecom company, ZTE, has agreed to plead guilty to breaching a
U.S. export ban... by selling equipment with American-made parts to North Korea and Iran.
The fine is a record-breaking 892-million U.S. dollars, with the potential for an additional
300-million dollars if the terms of the settlement is violated at any time during the next seven
years.
Reuters 2232 "With this action, we are putting the world
on notice -- improper trade games are over with.
Those who flout our economic sanctions, export control laws and any other trade regimes will
not go unpunished."
The Shenzhen-based company shipped some 32-million dollars worth of equipment to Iran between
2010 and 2016, in addition to winning large scale telecommunication infrastructure contracts.
It was also charged in connection with 283 shipments of equipment to North Korea, mostly
of mobile phones.
Similar fines and penalties could also be coming to other Chinese companies, several
of which are said to be under investigation for breaches in trade with North Korea.
The rogue state has been further shut off from the international financial world, after
its banks were banned from the biggest financial messaging service, Swift, earlier this year.
The Wall Street Journal revealed that three North Korean banks were cut off from the service
that facilitates international transactions, after UN investigators found they were using
the system despite having been blacklisted.
Swift has said it has now banned all UN-sanctioned North Korean banks, but U.S. senators have
called for a complete ban on its services... for North Korean firms.
The U.S. and the European Union pressured Swift into a similar blanket ban on Iran in
2012, and that was considered a critical step in forcing Tehran back to the table to negotiate
a nuclear deal signed in 2015.

China has a proposal for North Korea, South Korea and the U.S.
Foreign minister Wang Yi believes it will lead to a resumption of negotiations between
them.
He also continued to voice opposition against deployment of the THAAD missile defense system
in the Korean peninsula.
Connie Kim shares with us the top diplomat's idea.
China has called on North Korea to halt its missile and nuclear tests and for the U.S.
and South Korea to stop their ongoing military drills in a bid to ease tensions in the region.
Speaking on the sidelines of China's annual parliamentary meeting, Chinese Foreign Minister
Wang Yi described Washington and Pyongyang as "two accelerating trains coming toward
each other, with neither side willing to give way."
"As a first step, North Korea could suspend its nuclear and missile activities, in exchange
for a halt of the large-scale U.S.-South Korea exercises.
This suspension-for-suspension can help us break out of the security dilemma and bring
the parties back to the negotiating table."
The foreign minister went on to say the dual suspension would bring all sides closer to
both denuclearizing the peninsula and establishing peace.
Wang said China hopes to continue its cooperative relationship with South Korea this year marking
their 25th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties,... but reiterated the country's opposition
to the U.S. missile defense system THAAD,... saying it is the biggest obstacle to the development
of relations between Seoul and Beijing.
"It's common knowledge that the monitoring and early warning radius of THAAD reaches
far beyond the Korean peninsula and undermines China's strategic security.
So clearly deploying THAAD is a wrong choice."
Wang also implied that there would be no trilateral summit between South Korea, China and Japan
unless the THAAD row were resolved.
The last time the three leaders met was in 2015, breaking a three-year hiatus due to
political and historical disputes.

As I've explored before, whether you're young or old,
male or female, smoker or non, high blood pressure, low blood pressure,
high cholesterol or low, having high levels of a toxic compound
called TMAO--trimethylamine oxide—
in one's blood stream is associated with a significantly higher risk
of having a heart attack, stroke, or dying over a 3 year period.
Where does TMAO come from?
The choline in foods like eggs can be turned by gut bacteria into TMAO,
which is then absorbed back into our system,
and the more eggs we eat the higher the levels climb.
Given the similarity in structure between carnitine and choline,
the same group of Cleveland Clinic researchers wondered
if carnitine, found in red meat, energy drinks, and supplements,
might also lead to TMAO production,
so they put it to the test.
If you feed someone a steak their TMAO levels shoot up.
Now this was someone who regularly ate meat.
Those who eat strictly plant-based
may start out with almost no TMAO in their system,
presumably because they're not eating any meat, eggs, or dairy,
but even if the vegan eats a sirloin almost no TMAO is made.
Why?
Presumably, they don't have steak-eating bacteria in their guts.
No TMAO is produced if you don't have TMAO producing bacteria in your gut.
If you don't regularly eat meat, then you're not fostering the growth
of the meat-eating microbes that produce TMAO.
This suggests that once we develop a plant-based gut ecosystem,
our bacteria will not produce TMAO
even if we eat meat every once in awhile.
However, we still don't know how rapidly gut bacteria shifts
after a shift in our diet,
but it does not appear to be all or nothing.
If you take men eating the standard American diet
and have them eat two sausage, egg, and cheese biscuits
before and after just 5 days of eating lots of high fat meals like that
you can boost TMAO production even higher.
So it's not just, do you have the bad bugs or not,
you can apparently breed more of them the more you feed them.
On the other hand, meat-free diets have been demonstrated
to have a profound influence on human metabolism.
You can analyze a urine sample and tell what kind of diet people eat
based on measurements like how low their TMAO levels are
in the urine of those eating egg-free vegetarian diets.
You can even take the same people and rotate them through 3 different diets
and you can tell who is who.
Who is on a high meat, low meat, or no meat diet,
in part based on the different compounds
churned out by the different gut flora or different flora activity
after just about two weeks on the different diets.
It's possible that some of the beneficial effects of whole plant foods
may be mediated by the effects they have on our gut bacteria.
At the same time, the standard American diet
may increase the relative abundance of undesirables
that produce toxic compounds including the cardiotoxicant TMAO.
Strictly plant-based diets have gained acceptance as a dietary strategy
for preventing and managing disease;
perhaps in part because of their rather unique gut flora,
less of the disease-causing bacteria and more of the protective species.
So all along we thought the reason those eating plant-based
had lower heart disease rates
was because they were eating less saturated fat and cholesterol,
but maybe their lower TMAO levels
may also be contributing to their benefits
thanks to the reduction of ingestion of carnitine and choline.
I talked about the egg industry response to the choline revelation.
How has the carnitine supplement industry reacted?
The former VP of Advocare, a multilevel marketing company
that sells carnitine supplements like "Slam"
while getting slammed with lawsuits, finding them for example
guilty of false, misleading or deceptive practices,
forced to pay over a million dollars
in response to the research implicating carnitine in TMAO production
he questioned whether there was a secret vegan conspiracy at the Cleveland Clinic.
Restricting our intake of meat or carnitine supplements
to prevent our gut bacteria from making TMAO, he argues,
"is like trying to prevent car accidents by restricting the sale of fuel."
Uh, OK, but there are benefits to transportation.
We're talking about TMAO,
which may be fueling our epidemic of heart disease,
the #1 killer of men and women in this country.
As far as I'm concerned, the more we can cut the fuel for that...
the better.

So, this is me measuring the wall
I don't know how I did this the first time, I'm like being 100% honest
I literally don't remember how I did it
I remember it taking two days though
I don't think this will take me two days
I think that I could be done
I could, I'll just do it now because I feel like I measured 14 across
nine down, just like the old one
And I kind of like, I don't really know like, how far up but
In the video that I have taking it down, the like
This part that ends kind of goes at my hips, so
I'm just kind of guessing here
At my old apartment, my TV was in front of the catwall
So you, sometimes you could see it, but the plan is that

And it's not going to look bad
And you won't see the, the ground so
I'm about to measure nine down now
And, yeah let's see, let's see how this goes and

Kim Jong-nam's son says his father was murdered - Duration: 2:07.More proof on the death of Kim Jong-nam, the half brother of North Korea's leader.
A video of his son claiming his father was murdered... was posted online.
Hwang Hojun takes a closer look.
A YouTube video emerged on Tuesday featuring a man claiming to be the son of Kim Jong-nam,
the half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
"My name is Kim Han Sol, from North Korea, part of the Kim family."
Korea's National Intelligence Service says it has confirmed the man is Kim Jong-nam's
son.
In the video, titled "KHS Video," the man displays his passport to prove his identity,
but most of it is blacked out.
He then claims his father was murdered, dismissing North Korea's claims to the contrary.
"My father has been killed a few days ago.
I'm currently with my mother and my sister.
We are very grateful to..."
...and the audio cuts off.
The 40-second-long video was uploaded onto the YouTube page of a group called Cheollima
Civil Defense, which also uploaded it to its website.
The group claims that it will help and protect anyone who wishes to flee from North Korea
and says that it has already done so for many people without seeking any rewards.
The group posted a statement along with the video that says the group is protecting members
of Kim's family upon their request,... adding that "the present whereabouts of this family
will not be addressed."
It also said this is its first and last statement on the matter.
The group also thanked countries that it claimed helped it provide protection for Kim's family,
including the Netherlands, China, the U.S. and an unnamed fourth country.
The group also singled out Netherlands ambassador to South Korea for his involvement and humanitarian
response.
Kim Jong-nam was killed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport last month by two suspects carrying
the deadly nerve agent VX.
North Korea has repeatedly disparaged the investigation, accusing Malaysia of colluding
with its enemies.
It also wants the Malaysian government to hand over Kim Jong-nam's body, but Malaysia
rejected the request, insisting that it can only be claimed by the person's
his next-of-kin.
