- In the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
- [Congregation] Amen.
- The Lord be with you.
- [Congregation] And with your spirit.
- This is the day when, true to his promise,
Jesus sent the Holy Spirit, the advocate, the helper,
to his apostles.
And the coming of the Spirit changed the apostles,
and saw the launching of a new community, the Church.
This day renews the gift of the Spirit in each of us,
and in the Church as a whole.
And let us pause to reflect on our need of the Holy Spirit
and to dispose ourselves to receive him.
Lord Jesus, your spirit enlightens our minds
and opens our hearts.
Lord have mercy.
- [Congregation] Lord have mercy.
- Christ Jesus, your spirit kindles within us,
the fire of your love.
Christ have mercy.
- [Congregation] Christ have mercy.
- Lord Jesus, your spirit heals the wounds
of sin and division.
Lord have mercy.
- [Congregation] Lord have mercy.
- May almighty God have mercy us on us, forgive us our sins,
and bring us to life everlasting.
- [Congregation] Amen.
- Glory to God in the highest.
- [All] And on Earth, peace to people of good will.
We praise you, we bless you, we adore you,
we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory.
Lord God, heavenly king, Oh God, almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten son, Lord God,
lamb of God, son of the Father.
You take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us.
You take away the sins of the world,
receive our prayer.
You are seated at the right hand of the Father,
have mercy on us.
For you alone are the Holy one, you alone are the Lord.
You alone are the most high, Jesus Christ.
With the Holy Spirit, and the glory of God the Father,
Amen.
- Let us pray.
Oh God, who by the mystery of today's great feast,
sanctify your whole church in every people and nation.
Pour out we pray, the gifts of the Holy Spirit
across the face of the Earth.
And with the divine grace that was at work when the Gospel
was first proclaimed, fill now once more the hearts
of believers, through our Lord Jesus Christ, your son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity
of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.
- [All] Amen.
- A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.
When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled,
they were all in one place together.
And suddenly, there came from the sky, a noise
like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire
house in which they were.
Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire,
which parted and came to rest on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit,
and began to speak in different tongues,
as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.
Now, there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven
staying in Jerusalem.
At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd,
but they were confused.
Because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
They were astounded, and in amazement, they ask,
"Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans?
"Then how does each one of us hear them
"in his native language?
"We are Partheons, Meads, and Elimedes, inhabitants
"of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,
"Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia,
"Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene,
"as well as travelers from Rome,
"both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs.
"Yet, we hear them speaking in our own tongues
"of the mighty acts of God."
The word of the Lord.

- A reading from the First Letter of St. Paul
to the Corinthians.
Brothers and Sisters, no one can say Jesus is Lord,
except by the Holy Spirit.
There are different kinds of spiritual gifts,
but the same spirit.
There are different forms of service, but the same Lord.
There are different workings, but the same God
who produces all of them in everyone.
To each individual, the manifestation of the Spirit
is given for some benefit.
As a body is one, though it has many parts,
and all the parts of the body, though many,
are one body, so also Christ.
For in one spirit we were all baptized into one body,
whether Jews, or Greeks, slaves or free persons.
And we were all given to drink of one spirit.

- [Congregation] Glory to you, Lord.
- On the evening of that first day of the week,
when the doors were locked where the disciples were,
for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst,
and said to them, "Peace be with you."
When he had said this, he showed them his hands
and his side.
The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you.
"As the Father has sent me, so I send you."
And when he had said this, he breathed on them
and said to them,, "Receive the Holy Spirit, whose sins
"you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins
"you retain are retained."
The Gospel of the Lord.
- [All] Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
- It was 18 years ago, was the vigil of Pentecost in Rome.
And Pope St. John Paul the second asked all of the parishes
in Rome to close down their Saturday evening masses,
so that he could gather the whole church of his diocese,
the diocese of Rome, that they would come together
at St. Peter's, and celebrate the vigil of Pentecost.
And it was kind of their close to the period of preparation
for the great jubilee year of 2000.
So this was in 1999.
And as I was ...
I had the privilege of being able to concelebrate
at that mass, along with 500 other priests ...
But we got there early, and we were in this long hallway
in the Vatican in preparation for the Mass.
And we, my friend Father Jim and myself, we both brought
our albs with us, but we didn't bring stoles.
We figured, well, the Vatican will provide stoles,
so all the priests look alike.
Well we were mistaken.
They didn't have stoles for us.
So at that time, I was a member of the conventional
Franciscans, and our friars are the main confessors
at St. Peter's.
So their residence is right behind, and so the other
priest says, "I'll go and get a couple stoles for us."
And he did.
Now this is ten days after my ordination as a priest.
And I'm standing there, at this table.
There were long tables, and I was at a table with our
stuff there, and this priest comes over to me and starts
speaking to me in Italian.
I said, "I'm sorry Father, I only speak English."
And he said, "That's okay, I speak English too.
"Would you hear my confession?"
I hadn't heard a confession yet.
And I was ready to say, well, "Jim will be back in about
ten minutes", and I'm like, "I can do this."
So we stood by the side, and celebrated
the sacrament of Reconciliation.
So the first confession that I celebrated was actually
in the Vatican.
And I didn't want my first confession to be a priest,
because then he'd recognize my mistakes.
And I did make some mistakes on the absolution.
And then later on the next day, I saw some people
who were on another pilgrimage, and I told them about
my experience of my first confession.
And they said, "Well, we hope you gave him a good penance."
(laughter from audience)
And I looked, and I said, "I forgot."
(laughter from audience)
No wonder why he went away happy, you know?
(laughter from audience)
Bu the Holy Spirit on Pentecost ...
It was very appropriate on Pentecost to hear
my first confession, because the Holy Spirit was given
for the forgiveness of sins.
You know, Jesus said to his disciples, when he
breathed on them, he said "Receive the Holy Spirit,
"whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose
"sins you retain are retained."
And when we say the words of absolution,
we say God the Father of mercies, through the death
and resurrection of his son, has reconciled the world
to himself, and sent the Holy Spirit among us
for the forgiveness of sins.
Now certainly that great sacrament of Reconciliation ...
Well, we know God forgives our sins.
But the Holy Spirit sends himself among us
for the forgiveness of sins,
that we also forgive one another.
As we expect God to forgive us,
so we are given the authority to forgive one another
from those who have sinned against us.
Actually, we're given the power,
we're given the Holy Spirit for the forgiveness of sins.
If everybody would understand that, and see that we are
made in the image and likeness of God, and the same spirit
given to those disciples is given to us, so that we may
forgive one another.
If everybody understood that, if everyone practiced
forgiveness, what a wonderful world this place would be.
Let the spirit live in our hearts.
And may we forgive as God forgives us.
And on this last Sunday, of our Easter season,
we once again renew our baptismal promises.
And so I ask you to respond with a resounding "I do",
as I ask you ...
Do you renounce sins so as to live in the freedom
of the children of God?
- [Congregation] I do.
- Do you renounce the lure of evil, so that sin may
have no mastery over you?
- [Congregation] I do.

- [Congregation] I do.
- Do you believe in God the Father almighty,
