Misconceptions Abound on Effects of Rate Hikes on Gold; Gold Price Forecast 2017 Points Higher
The interest rate tightening cycle is upon us.
The market expects at least three additional 25-basis-point rate hikes leading into 2018.
Common group-think may reason now is a good time to sell gold.
But that's not necessarily the case.
Nor is following the crowd a reliable way to make money.
Although gold prices today have been range-bound for five years, a resolution is coming sooner
rather than later.
Our gold price forecast 2017 reflects the fact that while rising rates aren't necessarily
bullish, stronger buy-side catalysts should overcome the "opportunity risk" of owning
gold.
So what exactly do we mean by the "opportunity risk" of owning gold?
Simply put, bonds and dividend-paying stocks also pay higher rates when the Fed hikes interest
rates, so the "cost" of owning gold gets more acute.
Of course, since gold has no yield, logic states it's more expensive to hold gold
during these periods.
But is the logic correct?
Or is this financial fake news?
Well, it's a little bit of both.
In theory, the logic is sound.
But the market doesn't always react that way.
That's because investors invest on expectations more than anything else.
By the time the Federal Reserve acts, rate hikes are priced in.
The market is forward-looking.
For instance, a July 2015 HSBC study found that gold prices actually increased during
the past four Fed hiking cycles.
"History shows that gold prices also fall leading into a rate hike and generally rise,
though sometimes with a lag, after the first rate hike…"
The gold price chart below gives a visual example of the price of gold during past rate
hike cycles.
This chart shows how gold reacted during the 2004 tightening cycle, in response to a robust
economy post-Tech Bubble.
Effects of Increased Rates on Gold Prices
So far, the playbook has stayed true to form.
Gold prices per ounce fell precipitously before the Fed's first rate hike, only to increase
afterwards.
Gold was around $1,800/ounce in fall 2012, only to drop to $1,060/ounce by the time the
Federal Reserve started raising rates in December 2015 (by 25 basis points).
That first rate hike coincided exactly with the secular low in prices.
The same thing occurred after the Fed's second rate hike in December 2016.
Gold prices were mired at 10-month lows ($1,135/ounce) only to rebound north of $1,250/ounce in 1.5
months after the second hike.
History seems to be repeating itself, and it's telling us that rate hikes aren't
the driving factor in price.
What is the driving factor then?
Most likely, gold is being purchased on dips as a hedge against a severe stock market decline
and future monetary debasement—a fourth round of quantitative easing (QE), perhaps?
Astute investors are aware of how rate hikes could torpedo the economy by making the cost
of borrowing prohibitively high.
Consumers and businesses are very price-sensitive and oversaturated with debt as is.
If the economy goes into recession, surely one of the highest valuation markets ever
will crash, leading investors into the comforting arms of gold.
Remember, the American economy is all about credit growth.
Once the inevitable slowdown in commercial borrowing happens, the business cycle ends.
It's really that simple.
This is precariously close at hand.
Thus, our gold price forecast 2017 calls for higher prices, veering towards $1,500 per
ounce by the time the interest rate hike cycle winds down.
That will most likely be sometime in 2018 or 2019, but gold purchasing on the dips starting
in 2017 could be your friend.
If the stock market craters and causes a massive new debt stimulus and/or the Fed reverses
course on reducing its balance sheet and starts expanding it again, all bets are off.
Gold prices have the potential to go much higher, especially in conjunction with a weaker
dollar.
We believe the market is on the cusp of rediscovering "value investing" again.
Cheap assets will come back in vogue; expensive ones will wilt.
Gold and silver belong in the former camp.
Not only will they protect your portfolio against calamity like they always have, they
may become stellar capital-appreciating stars when paper assets become mired in a sea of
red.

I love summertime.
It's one of my favourite seasons.
And the most fun part is
keeping a small album of the summer.
About the summer and all fun things you do.
I would like to give you some tips and advice
how to make a cool summer photo album.
To start off: your gear.
I advice you to use - instead of your usual phone or ordinary camera -
a polaroid camera.
If you have one, I advice you to use it. And I have one.
You can find a review about this polaroid camera on my blog.
I will leave a link in the description box.
Fun part is: You are in the moment.
And you can only take 1 picture.
Which makes it extra special!
What do you need?
A camera.
Polaroids. Obviously.
I have a strap too. Which is convenient if you want to take the camera with you.
And I have a camera cover.
And a little album to put my photos in.
But what do you need to do when you're making a picture?
Think about the moment.
In a photo album you want to capture a certain feeling
or focus on a specific moment.
So choose those moments. And try to pay attention to it.
The idea is
that if you're making a picture - that years from now when you see the photo -
you still know about that moment and how you were feeling at that time.
Catch my drift?
Look at the composition of the photo.
Look, I don't claim to be a good photographer. Not at all.
But I do think about
how I can photograph something the best way I can.
With a composition I think of how I want the photo to look like.
And sometimes it's just an easy selfie.
Or usie.
How much space do you have in your album?
Pretty important.
It is convenient to know how much space you have left in your album.
So you make the exact amount of
photos during summer.
Make sure you have your camera with you everywhere you go.
Are you going somewhere and you don't know
if you will have nice pictures?
When you have your camera with you, you will certainly not miss the moment.
The most important thing during summer: RELAX.
If you haven't got your camera with you

the nation's capital Ottawa and I have my good friend Matthew Whyatt down on the Gold
Coast of Australia.

Matthew: Thanks very much Bob.

Over the last number of episodes we talked about the Velocity Selling System.
From episode 62 I believe, step one building rapport, step two setting the parameters,
step three uncovering buying motivators, uncovering financial ability in step four, step five
uncovering decision making, last week we summarised step six summarising the whole process and
in the summary we decided to proceed, we can help this buyer so we're moving forward
with a prescription.
What are prescriptions all about Matthew?
Matthew: Well prescription as I said before we use the word prescription quite deliberately
not presentational.
We use the word prescription because we see ourselves as doctors of selling, because if
you get a prescription from the doctor and he hasn't diagnosed your problem, it's
malpractice.
So we want to make sure that we don't just decide that our widget, or our thing that
we are selling is just the only thing that we've got to sell, it actually fits with
the customer.
We've qualified them in or out for ourselves not the other way around when the buyer says
we don't want you.
We want to make sure there's a few things here.
When you go into this presentation meeting if it's the same meeting then you don't
need to do this, but if it's a future meeting where you are presenting a proposal, in a
lot of larger environment's you do need to do that, you want to make sure you start
the meeting with understanding that something has changed.
Mr. Buyer has anything changed since the last time we spoke?
Now I've been in sales situations where the salesperson, myself has gone and given
the big dog and pony show because it's been a number of weeks in between thinking that
I am absolutely crushing it, get to the end, ask for their order, try to get them to buy
because I wasn't fully involved in the Velocity Selling System at that time, and they've
said actually we've had a change of circumstances, we can't do this anymore.
Bob: Yeah.
Matthew: And I'm just thinking, I've just spent an hour doing my best work and they
don't want it.
So make sure that nothing has changed.
It's a super important part about the prescription process.
Bob: So what you're saying is the beginning is summarising everything that you've left
with.

Bob: in other words, whatever your summary was last week, well you start by that summary
today and you open.
That's your beginning.

So we summarise that and then we move forward, nothing's changed.
Matthew: So we figured out that nothing's changed and say look, last time and throughout
our conversations we've identified these four or five or two or three major issues.
You want to ask them what they want you to solve first.
Once again it's not about you and your presentation, your dog and pony show, it's about them.
And they might say well this is actually the most important thing and we move to that and
solve it.
And then ask them what's next and then solve it.
And then ask what's next and then solve it.
Giving them the perception of control of the conversation whilst making sure you're on
track only dealing with their issues.
That's the point.
Bob: Jackpot.
Matthew: Don't talk about the speed or connectivity or whatever it is, talk about only their issues
in their business outcomes.
Bob: In other words, sell today, educate tomorrow is the rule.
Matthew: Absolutely.
Bob: Sell today, address the issues only.
Don't talk about the other bells and whistles, that's the educate, that can happen tomorrow.
That's when you bring the client more value.
That's excellent Matthew.
You've got the beginning where you summarise, in the middle where you look at their biggest
challenges, let them tell you which ones, you give your solutions to each of them, that's
great, what happens next?
Matthew: So really if you're asking for the business at this stage we want to test
the water.
One of the techniques, there's a thousand techniques that you can use, one of the ones
that I like to use is the scale of one to ten.
Are you happy with everything that we've spoken about today Mr. Buyer?
Yes I am.
Look, just so I can understand on a scale of one to ten, one is I've completely missed
the mark and ten is you're ready to get started, where are you?
If it's under a 6, then you take the fall.
Sorry obviously I've messed up here somewhere, what areas did I not address?
If It's over 7, we want to ask the question, what would take you to get from a 7 to a 10?
What are the two or three things?
I always ask two or three things so the person will go a bit deeper, using the rule of three
plus.
What are two or three things that will get us to a ten?
If they say a nine, I generally, jokingly with a smile on my face, I say Mr. Buyer,
are we generally working on a scale of one to nine here and ten doesn't exist?
Bit of a laugh bit of a smile.
Alright then, the last question is really simple.
How would you like me to proceed?
Bob: Yeah, in other words, you'll let the buyer buy.
Matthew: Let the buyer buy, exactly.
Bob: That's fantastic.
You just empowered the buyer, what would you like me to do next?
That's fantastic Matthew.
So we start with summarizing to make sure that nothing has changed, we let the buyer
identify the process of which ones they want solved, which problems they want solved first,
we address that, we address only the issue- we sell today, educate tomorrow.
Then we check the temperature on a scale of one to ten, zero no interest, ten they're
already using it, under six take the blame, seven, eight, nine, what's it going to take
to get you to a ten?
Address it and as you said a nine you probably say it's fair you work on a scale of 1-9,
ten doesn't exist, you have a little laugh and then you ask the closing question, what
would you like me to do next?
And then you empower the buyer to buy.

Our kidneys are super important for our health.
They filter our blood, produce hormones, absorb minerals, produce urine, eliminate toxins,
and neutralize acids.
So as one of the most important organs in your body, your kidneys deserve some love.
Damage or steady decline of your kidneys can often go unnoticed for years as your kidneys
can still do their job with as little as 20% of their capacity.
Therefore kidney diseases are often referred to as "The Silent Diseases".
That's why it is so important to take care of them before it is too late.
10 common habits that can cause serious damage over time.
Habit 1.
Not Drinking Enough Water.
Your kidney's most important function is to filter blood and eliminate toxins and waste
materials.
When you don't drink enough plain water during the day toxins and waste material start
to accumulate and can cause severe damage to your body.
Habit 2.
Too Much Salt In Your Diet.
Your body needs sodium or salt to work properly.
Most people however consume too much salt which may raise blood pressure and put a lot
of stress on the kidneys.
As a good rule of thumb, no more than 5 grams of salt should be eaten on a daily basis.
Habit 3.
Frequently Delaying The Call Of Nature.
Many of us ignore the urge to go because they are too busy or want to avoid public bathrooms.
Retaining urine on a regular basis increases urine pressure and can lead to kidney failure,
kidney stones, and incontinence.
So listen to your body when nature calls.
Habit 4.
Kick The Sugar Habit.
Scientific studies show that people who consume 2 or more sugary drinks a day are more likely
to have protein in their urine.
Having protein in your urine is an early sign your kidneys are not doing their job as they
should.
Habit 5.
Vitamin And Mineral Deficiencies.
Eating a clean, whole food diet full of fresh vegetables and fruits is important for your
overall health and a good kidney function.
Many deficiencies can increase the risk of kidney stones or kidney failure.
Vitamin B6 and magnesium, for instance, are super important to reduce the risk of kidney
stones.
An estimated 70 to 80 percent of Americans isn't getting enough magnesium, so there

Too Much Animal Protein.
Over consumption of protein, especially red meat, increases the metabolic load on your

Or, the first thing he said to me when writing the initial police report was "so then you
had a few drinks..."
Well no, sir, that's not what happened, at all.
