Hey everybody! Welcome back to my channel. Today I am going to be sharing with you
guys my favorite things from spring. I haven't done a favorites video since my
fall favorites in December so it's been a little while. Winter... I have favourites
from winter but then as soon as winter is done and spring begins
I am the busiest I am all year so I never get my act together enough to
actually do a winter favorites, so I'm sorry about that. If you're still curious
about what my favorite things from winter were, then let me know in the
comments and I'll make a winter favorites video but I figured it's kind
of late at this point and I didn't know if you guys wanted to see it but if you do
I'd be totally willing to do a winter favorites. A very belated winter
favorites. Just let me know in the comments. Anyway I have a few different
things to share with you guys today. Most of them book related, surprise surprise.
And some of these things I've been talking about excessively throughout the
last couple weeks which makes sense because there are some of my favorite
things. So let's hop right into it and talk about some favorites. So my first
favorite from the season of spring would be my Instax Mini 8 camera. I got this as
a Christmas gift from my parents. This is in the grape color which - purple's my
favorite color so it makes a lot of sense - and they also got me this nice
cover and a strap so I can take it along and look like a huge tourist. I've been
really utilizing this a lot lately and I've really, really enjoyed it. It's so fun to
have Polaroids and to kind of be more selective about the pictures that I'm
taking. With your phone or with your digital camera you can just take a thousand and get
the perfect shot. With this is a little bit more of a mystery and of course there
are going to be some photos that don't come out the way you want them to but
it's, it's fine and it's more, I think it's fun that way. It's kind of like you're
taking a risk by taking photos with this. I have taking this with me on my
Pittsburgh trip, on my New York trip, and it's going to be coming with me this
summer. I'm going to take a lot of photos. I'm really excited about using this and
having physical photos to either stick in my journal or just to have. I've been
decorating my office with them at work as well and it's been really great. So
this is definitely one of my favorites for the season of spring and it's
probably going to continue to be a favorite of mine for the rest of the
year and for a very long time. My next favorite thing are these sandals
and as you can see I've been wearing the crap out of them. I got these as a
birthday present to myself. My birthday was in May so it's a birthday present to
myself and I picked these up. These are knockoff brand Birkenstocks. These are
called Mandel sandals and I forget what the design is but I found these on
Zulily and they're seriously the most comfortable sandals I've ever got. I
think I paid like $35 for these and I've been literally wearing them every single
day everywhere I go and I just love them so much.
These are definitely going to be favorites throughout summer. I'm going to
wear them pretty much everywhere. Hopefully I don't like wear them into
the ground but they're so comfortable and I could not recommend these enough.
If you can't afford Birkenstocks, check out Mandel. They're very similar all
their styles are very similar so go and check those out and they're so so
comfortable. 10/10, would recommend. I'm going to get into my book favorites of
the season of spring now. Most of these books I haven't shut up about so you
probably know what's coming. But the first book is The Year of Living Danishly:
Uncovering the Secrets of the World's Happiest Country by Helen Russell. This
book was so great. It was so cool to have a peek into a different country that I
don't know a lot about from somebody who also is unfamiliar
with the country. So if you haven't heard me talk about this, which I'd be
surprised if you subscribe to this channel and you haven't heard me talk
about it, but this is about a woman who is a journalist. She lives in London and
then her husband got an opportunity to work for Lego which
is, the headquarters is located in Denmark, and so she goes with him. They
decide to live for a year in Denmark and they learn all about what it's like to
live Danishly - how the Danes live. And this
was just so fascinating to me. Denmark seems like a really awesome country to
live in, honestly. Especially with everything that's going on in the United
States these days, I wouldn't mind living in Denmark for a little while. It seems
like a really wonderful place. The way that Helen Russell presented her
experience of living in Denmark was really, really interesting and it was
cool because she was relating her experiences in Denmark to her
experiences back home and also in the United States. She also kind of related
it to living in the United States as well which is good because that's where
I live so it kind of gave me an inside look on the differences between like
attitudes towards different things in the United States versus Denmark, as well
as the UK versus Denmark. So, obviously, really, really love this book. If
you're looking for a nonfiction read that's kind of more lighthearted and not
so depressing check this out. Helen Russell's voice is really
wonderful. She presents really great facts and statistics through this work
but also is super, super relatable, down-to-earth, and funny in this book so
I would totally recommend this as a nonfiction read if that's something that
you're looking for. I have two graphic novels favorites from the last season
and the first of those is Giant Days Volume one by John Allison and a bunch
of other artists and writers. This is a graphic novel series about three
roommates at university in the UK. They are starting their first year, so they're
freshmen, and they're kind of navigating life at university and this volume is so
funny. I laughed out loud so many times. I kicked the Dewey's 24 hour read-a-thon off
with this graphic novel and I couldn't have picked a better book
to lead off on. It is just so great. There's themes of feminism. There's themes
of friendship. Themes of love and relationships and
navigating that and it's just like, so - it's so good. I love this graphic novel
series. I've since read the second volume but I would say that the first volume is
a lot better than the second volume. If you want to get into a new graphic novel
series that's super light-hearted and fun and funny check out Giant Days.
The next one is a graphic memoir called Something New: Tales from a
Makeshift Bride by Lucy Knisely. I loved this book.
Lucy Knisely does a lot of graphic memoir type books and they're just so awesome.
I've read An Age of License by her which was a travelogue and it inspired me to
actually journal my whole year this year. This book is about her experience of
getting married and her relationship with her husband. The planning process
and everything like that. I'm an event planner so weddings are fascinating to
me on a few different levels and so learning kind of about how to plan a
wedding is really interesting to me and she does this in a really honest way. A
really - she also is extremely hilarious. Her voice shines right through in this
book and all of her books and she just seems like a really down-to-earth,
wonderful person. She also adds in tidbits of like, statistics of what marriage and
wedding planning is like in the United States and around the world which was
really interesting. So it's not just her story, but it is like kind of a look at
weddings in general and kind of pokes fun at how silly some of the wedding
traditions that we have in our culture are. And I agree that a lot of them are
super silly. But this is really - it's a sweet, sweet graphic memoir. There's some photos
in here as well from her wedding and from her process of planning her wedding
and I just really loved it. It was like a really wonderful peek into her wedding and I
think this is something that she's going to be able to treasure for her whole
life as well. It's kind of like a scrapbook, almost, of her whole experience
which is really cool. But yeah, that was Something New by Lucy Knisely.
Another great non-fiction read and it's a graphic memoir so if you like graphic
novels you might be interested in this as well. And then the next book is my
favorite book that I read in the spring and my favorite books that I've read so
far this year and that is The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. This book is
incredible. I know this has been getting so much hype on booktube and across all
bookish platforms online but it is so well deserved. If you haven't had the
chance to pick it up, please do. It's a really wonderful look at police and race
relations in the United States. It's very honest. It's written in a voice that is
extremely accessible. It's a YA so if you're trying to wrap your head around
what being black in America is like and it's a little bit difficult for you
check out this book because it's written in a voice that, like, you can put
yourself into the main character's shoes and understand the anger and
frustration that a lot of people feel in this country when it comes to race
relations in the United States, police brutality in the United States, and like
just generally what it's like to be black in the United States. I have no
doubt in my mind this is going to end up on my favorites list for the entire year.
It's one of my favorite books of all time now. It is - I cannot recommend this
book enough. I've written a full blog review on this book which I will leave a
link to in my profile so if you want to hear a little bit more of my thoughts go
and check it out. This is definitely a favorite of the season. It's going to be a
favorite of the first half of the year. It's going to be a favorite of the whole
year. It's going to be a favorite for a very long time and I'm going to
recommend it to everybody for a very long time. I cannot believe this is a
debut novel. Angie Thomas - I appreciate her so much for using her voice to write
this book and I'm very excited because this is already
being adapted into a movie. It was going to be adapted into a movie before
this was even released which says a lot so I'm looking forward to seeing how the
movie company hopefully does this justice because this is just a beautiful
piece of work. Alright I have two more favorites for you. Both of which are
experiences and I have little trinkets from those experiences. I also have vlogs
up of both of these experiences so I will leave a link to the cards but the
first one of those is my Pittsburgh Marathon experience. This is my medal. And
I ran the Pittsburgh Marathon in the month of May at the very beginning and it was
my fifth marathon. If you're not aware, I'm trying to run a marathon in all 50
states of the United States and so this was my Pennsylvania marathon and it was
just a really awesome experience. The Expo was great. The race itself was great. The
course was lovely. The people of Pittsburgh love their marathoners which is so much
fun and makes such a difference for people who are running it and are in
pain. Having that encouragement is just so amazing. Every neighborhood kind of
does something different so I ran through a neighborhood where people had
huge speakers set up and we're dancing and like getting all the runners to dance
and then I ran through a town called Friendship. It's a suburb of Pittsburgh, and
they were giving out popsicles and just like saying "Welcome to Friendship.
Everyone's welcome here." And it's just - it was just so great. And I had my friends
Cullen and Erin cheering me on the whole time which was so nice. They kind
of ran around the course and saw me at different places and it was just like so
great to have my friends there. I loved my experience running the Pittsburgh
Marathon. Next marathon I run it's going to be - it's going to be hard to top this.
I'm really happy that I chose turn the Pittsburgh Marathon. If you're looking
for a marathon or a half marathon to run in the States I would recommend this
marathon because it is - it was just great. I loved it. They treated the runners so
nicely which is all you're asking for when you're dying of pain after running
26 miles. So of course this is one of my favorite things, and I'm going to wear
this medal for the rest of this video because I can. I earned this thing. And then
I've talked about this a thousand times but the last favorite for spring of
course was seeing Hamilton. I saw Hamilton in May with Cullen and
Erin as well as Brett. We saw it at the Richard Rogers theater on Broadway and
it was so good. Oh my gosh. It's so hard to describe something that you've been
like, wanting to see for such a long time and then actually getting to see it or
experience it. I first discovered Hamilton - I was kind of late to the game -
but I discovered it last spring. I think there's like a vlog of me kind of - the
week that I actually discovered Hamilton and listened to it for the first time and
how I became instantly obsessed with it. Never thought I would see it because
when I first discovered I was like "I need to see this!" and then everybody's
like "Oh it's sold out for, like, the rest of eternity" and I'm like "Okay nevermind
I guess I'm never going to see it." And then our friend Cullen's credit card
company was running a deal on Hamilton tickets last June, so I think like a year
ago. And so he called me and Erin, who was
my coworker at the time, and was like "Do you guys want to go see Hamilton?" and
we're like "YES." He's like "Okay because I'm buying tickets." So we bought four
tickets for a show that was 11 months in the future, and 11 months later we
finally got to go and see it and it was just so glorious. It was everything that
I could have hoped for. It's not the original cast anymore so
that's something that you're curious about. The cast that is currently there
was just as amazing as the original, I'm sure, and it's - I just had such a great
time. If you have the opportunity to see it, even if you're not a fan
you're not sure if you want to, I totally recommend that you do. It's just a really
great story. It's a really great purpose behind it - telling the story of America
then with people of America today. It's just really, really great. Hamilton... you
guys know I'm obsessed with Hamilton. I feel like the whole Internet's obsessed
and Hamilton just because it's so good. But of course going to see it was a
highlight of my season and it's going to be a highlight of my whole year. It was
just so good and I'm just so grateful that I've had the opportunity to
actually go see it. Anyway that is it for my spring favorites. I hope you guys
enjoyed me gushing about all my favorite things.
If you did please, leave a big thumbs up on this video. Subscribe if you haven't
already. I do try to make a new video each and every week and I will see you
guys again very soon. Bye!
