Oh yeah baby, the Little Nightmares DLC finally came out!
This DLC, called Secrets of the Maw is not the continuation of Six's story from the
main game, but an entirely new story that is connected to Six's quest for freedom.
In this DLC we don't play as Six, instead we take control of another child named "the
Runaway Kid".
I'm gonna just call him RK for short cuz saying the Runaway Kid every other sentence
is going to get old real quick.
Incase you're rusty on the details of the game, the main game stars a little girl named
6 who is stuck on this massive vessel called the Maw.
As you play through the game Six must puzzle solve her way through the ship and past enemies
till she eventually overtakes the assumed owner of the ship and leaves.
Today we're going to go back into the story of Little Nightmares and dissect the DLC just
like we did with the main game.
So if you haven't watched our original Little Nightmares video I'd highly recommend taking
a gander at that before you watch this because I'm going to assume you know all the information
from that video moving forward.
Or you're free to be as confused as a dog who thinks his ball was thrown when it's
really behind the owner's back.
Either way we're going to go through this DLC piece by piece to figure out how it connects
to the main game and what we can expect from the other two DLCs due to come out over the
next six months.
So throw out your dirty yellow raincoat and trade in your zippo lighter for a flashlight,
we're about to uncover just what secrets of the maw are in...uh… the Secrets of the
Maw...uh...just roll the intro.
[Intro]
Let's begin where most things tend to start: the beginning.
Our new adventure unfolds with RK blanketed by a black mist as he treads water.
We begin to swim towards, well towards something I hope when suddenly we're submerged under
water and then the screen cuts to black.
RK then wakes up in a crib that looks more comfy than my bed because IKEA beds aren't
that great.
Let's pause here because we've already learned multiple things about this new character
and the story we're about to play through.
First of all, the DLC doesn't just start with this water scene for no reason.
We should be expecting water to play a major role in the DLC which is a completely new
concept to Little Nightmares.
In addition to that, RK doesn't just drown in the water.
If you look closely, we can see that a spindly hand appears from underneath him and pulls
him under.
So without even actually starting to play the game we already know that water is going
to be an important mechanic in the dlc and that there is something deadly hiding beneath
the water's surface.
This dream is foreshadowing what we're going to be up against for the rest of the DLC.
You could say we just had a..little nightmare.
Unfunny jokes aside, we wake up in a crib much like the cribs we saw in the main game.
Based on that we can assume that we're fairly far down in the Maw.
We're not in the exact same room that Six went through, but it's likely that we're
near that crib room and therefore nowhere near the surface.
As we run out the door of the crib room we can see Mr. Noodle Arms a floor below us.
Just seeing Mr. Noodle Arms gives us our timeline for the DLC.
Since Mr. Noodle Arms still has his noodles, we know that this DLC takes place before Six's
journey since Six ended up cutting his arms off.
As we walk into the next room we're greeted with a child's drawing of the Maw.
This is an important drawing because it means that another child has been through here before.
And it's doubtful it's Six since the DLC precedes the main game.
After jumping down the hole in the floor we're greeted with another drawing of an eye.
And if we weren't sure about these drawings being created by children, the child handprints
next to the eye confirm this idea.
Once we walk out of this room we can see the eye that Six had to pass in the main game.
We know exactly where we are in the ship now and it looks like we're going to be doing
some back tracking, so let's track on back.
RK climbs down the cage wall on the right side of the eye and..HOLD IT!
Do you see that shadow in the upper left?
There's a shadowy child figure hiding from the eye's gaze.
Is this the child that drew the pictures of the Maw and the eye?
I can't say for sure but considering we haven't seen another escaped child it seems
like the most likely scenario right now.
Also that son of a bitch has a flashlight!
Where's my lightsource?
The shadowy figure basically gives us a tutorial on how to avoid the eye's line of sight
and get to the next room.
From there we can run all the way back to the restroom that Six first climbed up to.
And what do you know, that shadowy figure is letting down the towel rope we climbed
up at the beginning of the main game!
If we pause the clip at the right time, we can see that the shadow child is wearing a
skirt and has long braided hair.
Is this girl Six?
It's certainly possible.
It would explain why Six was over there to begin with.
But we can't know for sure yet.
After pretending to be Mario and dropping down a pipe we land in a room slightly filled
with water.
Pushing on to the next room we-- *GASP*!
The flashlight!
Where's the little girl??
What happened to her?
Has our escape suddenly turned into a manhunt?
Did she get taken by an enemy or someone who works on the ship?
We just don't know yet, so let's push onward but keep that missing girl in the back
of our brainium.
With the flashlight we can play flashlight tag! or german spotlight!.. which is a holocaust
reference by the way.
We eventually find ourselves in more rooms flooded by murky water when our nightmare
comes true.
Something unsettling starts chasing us in the water, and if it catches us I'm certain
we'd see that same spindly arm from our dream.
A few more rooms pass us by and we come to a lever that...changes water levels.
OH NO!
THE TRAUMA!
THE WATER TEMPLE!!
OCARINA OF TIME!!
MAKE IT STOP MAKE IT STOP!!!
Oh, thank you kind sir.
I needed that.
The lever changes the water level, which was a horrible mechanic in ocarina of time, but
not quite so bad here.
We can use this move on to the next set of rooms.
RK continues his journey through partially flooded hallways, solving puzzles and avoiding
the water monster until he gets to this flooded room.
Now why is this room important?
Well, when the water level in this room is lowered we can see that a bunch of the furniture
has been fastened to the floor so it won't float away with the water.
Who would do this?
And why?
Is it possible that the water demon spawn thing that keeps trying to kill us is a human?
That it lives under the water and enjoys the same amenities that we do above ground?
There's something fishy going on here, pun intended.
It seems like this water monster definitely has at least some human tendencies.
First we saw it's arm and hand which looked quite human, and now furniture specifically
tied down to be used underwater.
Let's keep that in mind as we move forward.
We come to the final water room, moving from floating object to floating object in an attempt
to evade our submerged nemesis.
RK makes his way to a small platform with a TV on it which finally allows us to catch
a look at our pursuer.
It is indeed a human, or at least it probably used to be.
It has a human body type and scraggly hair and looks like it's wearing clothing too!
When we finally kill by using the TV to electrify the water, we see that this monster is completely
human in every way yet seems undead, and is able to breathe underwater.
Perhaps it doesn't need to breathe.
If this is undead like it seems, does that mean all the other enemies we've encountered
in the Maw are also undead?
We'll come back to that thought in a minute, but for now let's finish the DLC.
Once the undead fish man dude is killed RK climbs his way to a higher floor only to be
snatched by Mr. Noodle Arms!
And look!
It's Six!
So the DLC begins before the main game but it actually ends up happening in parallel
with Six's quest.
And there the DLC ends, with us being taken away by Mr. Noodle Arms.
But what does it all mean?
Well the water plays a major role in this DLC and I would assume that it will continue
to play a major role as the rest of the DLCs are released.
The main reason I think that is because of one unanswered question: Why does Six wear
a raincoat?
Isn't it odd that Six is wearing that yellow coat and yet she never comes in contact with
any water?
Yet RK's entire story has been filled with water so far.
Their stories are interconnected and I believe we will see more reasons for Six to be wearing
that rainjacket before the end of the DLCs.
But the main question is: What did this DLC reveal about the Maw?
Remember, all the DLCs together are titled Secrets of the Maw.
This one is specifically referred to as The Depths, which makes sense considering all
the water mechanics and that it all takes place under the previously known area of the
Maw.
But I think the main secret this DLC revealed is that the people on this ship, or at least
some of them, aren't alive.
That water guy didn't need to breathe yet he had furniture set up as though he was a
human.
Based on that a bunch of ideas as to what the Maw is come to mind.
It could be a form of purgatory, a place in between life and death where souls are brought
for their journey to the next life.
That would explain why everyone looks so strange and grey and deathly.
The woman who runs the ship could be a goddess of death who watches over the souls in between
life and afterlife.
This would explain why Six gains deadly powers when she defeats the woman.
And Six returning to the surface is Six emerging from purgatory.
But this is just one explanation of what this DLC tells us.
I think it's a good starting point but we'll need to wait for the next DLC to find out
if we're on the right track.
Until then, what do you think the DLC means?
Do you think I'm on the right track with this purgatory idea, or is it something else
entirely?
Let me know what you're thinking so I can include it in our next video when the next
chapter is released.
Until then feel free to check out our patreon and our other Little Nightmares video is you
haven't already.
Thank you to all our patrons who have done such a great job supporting us and I'll
talk to you guys in a couple days!
