How Can Spider-Man Climb While Wearing a Suit? (Because Science w/ Kyle Hill) - Duration: 9:23.

- Today's episode is sponsored by Puzzle Quest.

(web shooting and grunting)

Spider-Man has a problem.

He's supposed to be able to do anything that

a spider can and, yet, he covers it all up with a suit.

If a radioactive spider bit you and gave you spider powers,

why would you make a suit that

covered up all of your spider hairs?

You know, the thing that lets you 'spider'?

I think there is a way around the suit's

stickiness problem and it's with science.

Duh.

(light techno music)

Uncle Carben.

Here is the scene I'm talking about

from the first Spider-Man film.

In it Peter Parker grows tiny barbed hairs on his hands,

and presumably, his feet, and it's implied

that it's those hairs that allow him

to scale surfaces like a spider can.

But, if that's the case, wouldn't putting

a full bodysuit over all of your skin

negate the effect that that hair produces?

Yes, yes it would.

But before we figure that out, how do spiders climb stuff?

Here is a tiny, poorly drawn spider.

Now, enhance.

(light clicking)

Those little hairs on its feet

that you can see with your own eyes

what are on Tobey Maguire's hands

are called setae and they are just micrometers thick.

They are very, very small, but that's

not why spiders stick to stuff.

Now, enhance again.

(light clicking)

At the end of every one of those setae

are hundreds of spatulae.

They are just nanometers thick and the real reason

why spiders can stick to stuff.

And maybe how the Powerpuff Girls' hands work.

Oh, gross!

Let's take a closer look at those spatulae.

These spatulae are so small, in fact,

they are on the scale of individual atoms.

And because they are so small,

if you brought them close to another set of atoms,

like the atoms that make up a wall, for example,

there can be a weak electrical attraction.

Because the electrons that orbit the nucleii

of atoms aren't really like particles,

they're more like clouds of charge,

if you bring two atoms close enough together

there is a chance those charges, as they whiz around,

will end up attracting each other,

even though the atoms themselves may be neutral.

This is a weak force, but it's still something

and it's called the Van der Waals Force.

Van der Waals forces are where most people

trying to explain Spider-Man's stickiness stop.

(web shooting)

If you add up all the tiny interactions

at the atomic level over the millions

of spatulae that spider's have,

that explains how they stick to walls.

Even the Marvel Handbook, the official one,

says something like this.

Spider-Man enhances the flux of interatomic forces

on the surfaces that he touches,

increasing the coefficient of friction

between that surface and himself.

The first part is, essentially, Van der Waals forces

and the second part is wrong, but we'll let that go for now.

But we can go further.

Do Van der Waals forces explain

how a human-sized thing could stick to a wall

and does it solve the suit problem?

If Spider-Man tried to climb walls with actual spider hair,

(squishing) it wouldn't work.

You may have heard of this study

that came out a couple of years ago.

It looked at a number of different species to determine

whether or not humans could ever climb like spiders.

It looked at 225 different species

with Van der Waals forces-enabled foot pads

and concluded that across a wide range of surface areas

they were directly proportional to the mass

of that animal, from geckos to mites.

The authors of this study then extrapolated it

to the body mass of humans and, as you can see,

the surface area would have to go way up.

The authors concluded that you would need

to devote a full 40% of your entire body's surface area

to sticky Van der Waals pads in order

to cling to a wall like Spider-Man.

This is far more than we ever see Spider-Man use.

It'd be like if your whole chest was just

one big spider foot and you had to put your chest

against a wall and kind of, like,

shimmy around if you wanted to climb.

And then you'd kind of look like a,

like Slug Man, and no one wants

to be Slug Man, or Snail Girl, or Snail Boy.

But all this doesn't necessarily mean

that Peter Parker can't climb stuff.

Another way to interpret this study is that nature

is focusing on surface area and not actual stickiness

of the Van der Waals pads across a range of body sizes.

So, what if Peter Parker,

instead of having a lot of surface area,

had abnormally sticky Van der Waals pads?

That's fine, it would get around

that problem and we can't really speak to that,

we'd have to invent some new biology.

But, we still have the suit problem.

Because Van der Waals forces work on the scale

of nanometers, any suit, even if it's very thin,

would interfere with that interaction.

And so, Spider-Man's suit needs to be made

out of material that is just as sticky

as his abnormally sticky hands and feet.

Do we know of any material that can do that?

If Spider-Man augmented his suit,

just like he did with his web shooters,

with science that we already have,

he would be able to get around the suit problem

and climb just like a spider does.

Looking to the stickiness of gecko feet,

university researchers at Dayton, Akron,

the Air Force and the Georgia Institute of Technology

have created a material out of carbon nanotubes.

A material so thin and so fine

it has a Van der Waals interaction

10 times that of a gecko's foot.

And remember, the gecko is basically the best at this.

Time to do the math.

If Peter Parker is 76 kilograms and is under Earth's gravity

and the new material made out of carbon nanotubes

can support a hundred newtons of weight

for every square centimeter,

then Spider-Man's suit would only need

to devote seven and a half square centimeters,

in total, to stickiness.

But is this enough?

When Spider-Man is climbing it looks like he's only

using his fingertips and, presumably, his toe tips.

So is there enough surface area across

all of your fingers and toes to hold you up?

Well, given that each one of my fingertips

is around three square centimeters,

and I have 20 of those, I get nine.

Which means that there is nine times more surface area

than you need to stick to a wall like Spider-Man

if you're using this carbon nanotube material.

That means you could definitely climb

like Spider-Man if your suit was using

this material on just fingertips and toe tips.

In fact, you could climb a wall

just like Spider-Man and hold your

whole body weight on a wall using just three...

(squirting) Oh, oh!

Three fingers.

And also, Spider-Man's skin would need

to be this sticky to work.

Eww, ugh, ehhhh, ehhhh!

So how does Spider-Man climb walls if he's wearing a suit?

Well, Peter Parker is a science whiz,

he would know that the nanoscale interactions

that allow him to climb a wall with his bare skin

would be negated if a suit came

in between a wall and his skin.

So, what I think he is doing is augmenting his suit

with science just like how he did with the web shooters.

He has created a material that goes on the outside

of the suit that gives it the adequate stickiness

to give him super spider powers.

Spider-Man can do anything a spider can.

And so his suit has to, too.

It just needs a little help.

Because science.

Thanks, Puzzle Quest.

It's not just about how Spider-Man sticks to stuff,

it's also, if you're climbing, you think about it,

it's also how you unstick from stuff.

Using that material that we just went through he'd

be able to do three points of contact and climb just fine.

He could hold onto the wall with just three fingers.

But how do you stick and then unstick?

Well, the cool thing is the orientation

of this material matters.

If it's at one angle it's sticky and it will stay on a wall.

If it is at another angle, it will just detach,

that's how gecko feet work.

I mean, just using, (squirts) oh!

Gotta stop.

Gotta stop doing that.

Desperate Republicans Lash Out At Democrats Asking For THEIR Healthcare Plan. - Duration: 4:09.

Earlier this week the republican national committee's Twitter account apparently upset

about the fact the democrats are talking bad about the republican healthcare bill sent

out a tweet challenging democrats to come up with their own healthcare plan.

This is what the tweet said "Our healthcare system is collapsing but democrats refuse

to bring anything to the table.

Where's their plan?"

Well I don't know if the folks running the RNC Twitter account are aware of this, but

the democrats plan is actually the one that your party is trying to repeal and replace.

You know that thing called Obamacare, I don't know if you realize this, but the Obama part

of Obamacare refers to President Obama.

A democrat.

That's where the democrats plan is, but even if they didn't have that particular legislation

in place, guess what, your party is in the majority in the house, the senate, the White

House, the Courts everywhere.

It's not the democrats job to come up with a healthcare plan when you have already shut

them out of the process.

They wanted to be a part of it.

They wanted to be a part of those meetings to find out what in the hell you were doing.

Instead your party decided to write this legislation in secret, without any democratic input and

without any input from a lot of republicans in DC and then they wanted to bring it to

a vote before anybody had a chance to read it.

Before the CBO had a chance to score it.

So don't sit there acting like the democrats owe you anything.

The democrats have come up with plans, not only do we have Obamacare in place, but Hilary

Clinton released her healthcare plan in response to your asinine tweet.

Bernie Sanders has a healthcare plan, it's called Medicare for All.

Perhaps you've heard of it.

The majority of Americans support it.

Meanwhile your healthcare plan strips people of their health insurance coverage, gives

a tax break to the wealthy, 22, 23 possibly even 24 million American citizens lose their

coverage because your cutting 800 billion dollars away from the Medicaid program.

So you tell me, should we ask the democrats for their plan?

Are you going to enact it?

Are you going to take notes on it?

Are you going to incorporate parts of it, because if you are I'm sure every democrat

in Washington DC will be beating down your door with a stack of papers saying here's

my plan, go ahead and take the best parts out of it.

So don't ask for something if you don't genuinely want it, but also don't act like the democrats

have sat on their thumbs doing nothing in this conversation.

You shut them out.

You are trying to repeal their legislation.

You want to see their plan, go look up the Affordable Care Act and Patient Protection

Act, that's the democrats healthcare plan.

That's the one that gave an additional 14/15 million people in this country insurance coverage

when they previously didn't have it.

That's the one that gives low income Americans subsidies and tax breaks so that they can

afford healthcare coverage.

Yours is the one that kicks people off their insurance plan, strips them of those subsidies

and tax breaks because you want to give more money to the top one percent.

The democrats have a plan and it's a plan that doesn't hurt American consumers.

If you really want to take a look at it, I suggest you do that because you could probably

get some really great ideas if you actually bothered to pick up that legislation and read

it.

What The Cast Of Billy Madison Looks Like Today - Duration: 4:50.

If you've ever wanted to feel old, just take a look at the movie Billy Madison, which turned

22 years old in early 2017.

It's hard to believe that the comedic misadventures of Billy, Eric Gordon, and Veronica Vaughn

first played out over two decades ago, giving us all the middle school catchphrases we needed.

"Stop looking at me, swan!"

We caught up with the stars of the film to see not only what they look like today, but

what they've been doing these last two decades.

Adam Sandler

There's no question that Billy Madison helped launch Adam Sandler's career in a way Saturday

Night Live never could.

After a string of cult classics and hit comedies like Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy, and The

Wedding Singer, Sandler has continued a steady movie career, although his more recent efforts

like Grown Ups and The Do-Over haven't been nearly as well-received as his early works.

Darren McGavin

In addition to his part as the long-suffering dad in Billy Madison, you may recognize Darren

McGavin from his role as the title character in the '50s crime drama Mike Hammer, or in

the '70s horror/mystery television series Kolchak: The Night Stalker.

After his appearance in Billy Madison, McGavin appeared in a handful of other movies and

TV shows before retiring from acting.

Sadly, McGavin passed away in 2006 at the age of 83.

Bridgette Wilson-Sampras

Bridgette Wilson's portrayal of third-grade teacher Veronica Vaughn in Billy Madison launched

a generation of teenage fantasies.

The former Miss Teen USA winner would go on to appear in many other projects throughout

the '90s and 2000s, including films like I Know What You Did Last Summer and Mortal Kombat.

She's also a singer, and released at least one pop album overseas during the 1990s.

Wilson married tennis superstar Pete Sampras in 2000, and the couple has two sons, Christian

and Ryan.

Bradley Whitford

He was the character we all loved to hate—Eric Gordon, the snooty and corrupt competitor

against Billy to run the Madison family business empire.

Since playing Eric, Bradley Whitford has gone on to enjoy a successful acting career, scoring

roles in high-profile projects like The West Wing and The Cabin in the Woods.

"Tequila is my lady!

My lady!

Come on in, come on in!

You're welcome!

From darkness, there is light!"

Whitford has also appeared in dozens of other television series and movies, including the

2017 horror film Get Out.

Josh Mostel

Let's clear one thing up: contrary to popular belief, Josh Mostel is not Wayne Knight.

"Yeah, yeah, that's nice.

Gotta go!"

Mostel is famous for his roles in City Slickers and Billy Madison, among others.

In Billy Madison, Mostel played school principal Max Anderson, who has a major crush on Billy

and a hidden past as professional wrestler "The Revolting Blob."

After 1995, Mostel reunited with Adam Sandler again for Big Daddy and then played a role

in The Knockaround Guys.

Mostel will also be appearing in the third season of the USA series, Mr. Robot.

Norm Macdonald

While making Billy Madison, Adam Sandler brought along his Saturday Night Live castmate Norm

Macdonald, who played Billy's slacker buddy Frank.

After Billy Madison, Macdonald continued to work on SNL for several years as a main player

and the host of "Weekend Update" before leaving the series in 1999.

He's gone on to continue his work in stand-up comedy, while also appearing in a variety

of roles on film and television.

He's also made cameos in several other Adam Sandler movies, including Jack and Jill, Grown

Ups, and The Ridiculous Six.

Jim Downey

While he participated in some of the funniest and most quotable scenes in Billy Madison,

Jim Downey is primarily a writer, not an actor.

For years, Downey has been a contributing writer for Saturday Night Live, only making

occasional appearances on screen.

In fact, his famous monologue in Billy Madison was based on a real experience from his writing

days.

"I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

In a 2008 interview, Downey revealed that Chris Farley would come into the SNL writers'

room with some pretty horrible sketch ideas, and Downey eventually had to put a stop to

it with the infamous line that he later used in Billy Madison.

"Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it."

Robert Smigel

In Billy Madison, Robert Smigel played a minor role as Billy's high school science teacher.

"This does not make the ribosomes happy."

It's a forgettable role, but what you may not know is that Smigel is also the brain—and

hands and voice—behind Triumph the Insult Comic Dog.

While Smigel has continued to make occasional appearances in shows and films, and co-wrote

the script for the 2008 Sandler film You Don't Mess with the Zohan, his work as Triumph is

still his main gig.

Steve Buscemi

Only a few years after his breakout role in Quentin Tarantino's debut film Reservoir Dogs,

Steve Buscemi made a cameo appearance in Billy Madison as the troubled Danny McGrath.

Since Billy Madison, Buscemi has led a varied and prolific career with dozens of roles to

his name, including memorable appearances in Fargo, Boardwalk Empire, and The Big Lebowski.

And today I'm going to show you one of my favorite ways to use it.

In pizza, of course.

When I went vegan, I was a little nervous that I wouldn't be able to enjoy pizza anymore.

Living in New York City, we have the best pizza in the world, and I was sad that I wouldn't

be able to indulge in it anymore.

Luckily, there are a hundred different ways that vegans can enjoy pizza, and today I'm

going to share with you just one of those ways.

But I know that most of us are busy these days and don't have time to make pizza from

scratch.

And that's why we're going to be making lazy girl pizza.

Or lazy boy pizza.

Whatever floats your boat.

Basically, you can use any carb as a vessel for these pizza toppings.

Today I'm using bagels, but you could also use pita bread, English muffins, tortillas.

Any sort of delicious carb will do.

If you're wondering whether vegans can eat bagels, the answer is yes, mostly.

Traditional bagels that you'll find at a bagel shop or bakery are made with flour, water,

yeast, salt.

All vegan friendly ingredients.

Just steer clear of egg bagels or cheddar bagels.

But everything bagels, whole wheat bagels, poppyseed bagels - those are all safe bets.

And if you're buying bagels at the grocery store, of course check the label to make sure

you're not eating any dairy products.

I really hope you enjoy this recipe for vegan pizza bagels.

It's easy, it's fun, it's delicious, and shows you just how indulgent a vegan lifestyle can

be.

If you like this video, please show it some love with that thumbs up button.

And don't forget to subscribe.

Talk to you guys next week.

Thank you, bye!

What Hope Actually Meant to Martin Luther King Jr. and President Obama - Duration: 8:53.

So what I can share with you today is not an answer to the question of "What is hope?"

but I can share with you about how a tradition that I'm involved in studying and that I'm

linked to has a take on what ways of hoping may be better or more useful than others.

So my understanding of this tradition that I have studied and engaged with for a few

years now is the African American Protestant tradition of hoping, that's crafted over

centuries of despair and dehumanization.

And I think it has something to teach our nation.

Our nation that has in some ways undermined this very tradition of hoping.

And the nation in some ways has trivialized hope itself, made hope into something that's

largely a market-driven quest for getting our aspirations, for reaching our goals, for

achieving our aims.

I think one of the things that not unpacking this distinction between Obama's hopes and

King's hopes—based on the painting which I'm going to describe now—is it leaves

us more vulnerable to romantic conceptions of hope.

We tend to fall into this way of thinking about hope that's more reflective almost

of what Shelley called in 'Prometheus Unbound', 1822, he said he wants "to hope till hope

creates from its own wreck the thing it contemplates."

It's a beautiful line, right, and I'm susceptible and seduced by that kind of hope.

But when I think about King and Obama and this painting I tend to get more clear about

what is deep hope, right.

So I want to highlight quickly the distinctions between both King and Obama and then I'll

be done, because I think this will help us understand both what I'm trying to get at

and where we are now.

So first, King's hope, his description of hope is always disappointed and never realized,

while Obama's hope guides us past disappointment and is realizable.

So here we have a clear difference between the Protestant embrace of a tragic sense of

life and the kind of democratic politics of hope that aims to resist the politics of cynicism.

And that's fine.

So the important thing to remember though is that the difference in the Protestant embrace

of tragedy attenuates our inclinations for happy ending.

It works against that romantic conception that I argue, I pointed out Shelley was referencing

in the 1822 'Prometheus Unbound' quote, right.

Its romantic sense: to hope until hope reaches what it contemplates.

Second, King's hope is a discipline of the present moment.

It's a social practice done in community with the aim of reminding us that our lives

are always incomplete and unfinished.

Our deep hopes will not come to fruition, is King's point.

In this way we might say that King's hope is a way of relationship.

It is a relating to suffering.

It tells us to just keep going.

Obama's hope on the other hand is the aspiration for the future.

It's a rational belief about the probability of attainment.

Attaining one's ambitions.

We might say that Obama's hope attends to the pressures of achievement by affirming

aspirations for the future.

So I quickly want to caution you from taking what I'm saying as a way of thinking about

Martin's account as just another form of tragic hope, dark hope, melancholic hope,

"I hope against hope", hope of the hopeless, right.

Because I think that I take King's hope to simply be a reminder of the idea of the

tragic in our life, the notion that our mortal days will not be fulfilled.

So it's dark in that sense, but I don't want to pitch it as a dark hope, right.

I want to pitch it as a deep hope.

And when people go with melancholic hope or blues hope, I think they often end up romanticizing

a kind of hope that seduces us into thinking there may be a hope without suffering.

That is, the idea of a "dark" hope relies on the idea of a "light" hope, and that

has all kinds of problems, right, analogically.

But just the fact that both things sort of seem like they have to exist together is misleading

and it skirts the fundamental insight of Martin, which is to remind us of a certain kind of

suffering.

Now for King, a man who we often associate with things like the 'I Have A Dream' speech,

right, the song 'We Shall Overcome'.

He's telling us in '59, '63 and later on in '68 he gives a sermon called 'Unfulfilled

Dreams' where he continues this theme that all our hopes are blasted and our dreams are

shattered.

In other words the person we think of as the amazing hoper and dreamer is really trying

to tell us something much different.

He's trying to tell us our hopes are perfidious.

As George Buttrick notes, "We die with half our music in us."

So you might ask then, "What is the purpose of this sort of hope and why would I want

to subscribe to it?"

And that's just it.

This hope is not up for subscription.

It's a way of relating to suffering and facing the ultimate fact that we shall likely

not achieve all of the promises of life.

But this is just what life is, in this strand of Protestantism.

It is not life's failing.

King tells us that the tentacles of evil are always present, taking meaning out of life

but we must go on.

We must have the will to refuse.

We must have what Tillich called "the courage to be."

This, I think, is the link between Martin King and the Watts painting.

Both are fundamentally trying to affirm a relationship between suffering to continuing,

right.

And Martin is dealing with the death of dreams.

Watts, I think, is dealing with the death of his, reportedly his stepdaughter.

Remember Du Bois lost little Burghardt in 1899.

Burghardt was 18 months old.

Du Bois wrote that he was feeling a hope, "A hope not hopeful but un-hopeless."

The message is once again that our hopes are shattered.

This shattering provides a path to suffering that allows deeper meaning.

This is what deep hope is about.

So when students ask me "Why do I hope?"

I turn to Martin.

And these questions, of course, have recently increased.

Not because people are necessarily more depressed but because I think they don't understand

the deep hope that Martin was trying to call us to.

So let me just end by saying this.

Obama's not the only—it's not Obama's fault that we're not attentive to the deep

hopes that Martin was trying to call us to based on his interpretation of the painting.

Global marketers have made hope into a rational calculation for personal gain.

Many academics have subjected hopes to standards of analytic precision and conceptual clarity

which has kind of degraded it.

It's been certainly diminished by Christian leaders who reduced hope to a form of compliance.

This has led to a loss in our appetite for hope, deep hope.

That is, we want the romantic hope but not the deep kind that's in touch with suffering.

This is the kind of tradition that I've been studying.

The tradition that Martin and Jeremiah Wright, Fred Sampson link to the painting of George

Frederic Watts in 1886.

And thus I leave you with an invitation to the painting as well as one to deep hope.

Thank you very kindly.

I Got Skyrim to Work on My PC on Ultra Settings - DragoNate Daily Vlog - Wednesday 2017-07-05 - Duration: 3:23.

hey guys it is Wednesday night tonight and today was a wonderful but very hot

day very very hot I I was sweating just sitting and fans do absolutely nothing

at all but what's super cool about today is I was able to get Skyrim to install

properly and work and run on my computer yes so that's amazing I'm happy I'm so

happy about that so Skelm the link that you gave me to that installer for this

for the fix that is what worked that's all I needed that was literally all I

needed it didn't work the first hard tried it and I think the other things

that I tried downloading for Windows didn't work either because stupid me I

was downloading and trying to run the x86 version because my mind is seeing Oh

86 is higher than 64 so this one must be it and but no that's not what it is

because x86 is for the 32-bit version whereas x64 is for the 64-bit version so

and I already read this prior to doing any of these things and it didn't stick

in my brain I'm still seeing a higher number so I'm assuming that one's the

correct one but no so I was able to get that working now I did find out that my

windows update is broken I cannot update my computer with

automatic Windows updates and that is due to a missing or corrupted registry

key and so I don't know exactly what I'm going to do about that or what I need to

do about that but right now the important thing is I got Skyrim working

which means I can you know get other programs working that needed that fix

and everything and about other regular updates well whatever I guess it doesn't

really matter too much I mean it's been fine this far it's not like things are

just going to explode and stop working just because of

that not getting recent updates is that Windows has released for it so yeah

that's kind of cool I'm super happy that I was able to get that darn thing

working and everything everything is totally fine in that regard oh the other

funny thing about Skyrim is when I went to run it it it ran an automatic

check um right and it automatically decided that it's going to put the game

at Ultra settings so like I'm assuming the highest possible settings that there

are and I try playing it it runs like butter

oh it's so nice seriously I have never experienced a game being able to run on

on my computer that smoothly with that high of graphics

I am extremely amazed by that I'm happy so yeah that opens up a lot of new

possibilities and I guess that's kind of it for my day so I hope you guys had a

wonderful Wednesday and I hope your Thursday goes super well or has gone

super well and yeah I will see you again tomorrow so Godbless and have a great

one
