Netflix recently announced that a television adaptation of the highly successful video
game and novel franchise The Witcher was finally in the works.
So naturally, fans have been buzzing with thoughts and speculations as to what exactly
the show will entail.
And it's been confirmed; Henry Cavil will be playing the lead role of Geralt.
Not Mads Mikklesen or Viggo Mortensen.
Yep.
Lots of opinions out there on the interwebs about that one.
So today, we're counting down our picks for the top 10 Witcher Fan Theories, pertaining
to the show!
While not a whole lot of details have been released about the upcoming series yet, many
of these theories are bound to change over time, be improved, or flat out debunked, so
keep in mind that by the time you watch this, there might already be some fluctuations.
So with that in mind, let's jump into our list of the top 10 Witcher Fan Theories.
10 A Young Geralt Before the casting for Geralt was announced,
there was a lot of buzz as to whether the Geralt the show would depict would be an older
Geralt, like depicted in the games, or a younger version of the Witcher.
Many a fan and publication had made their picks for who would play a younger Geralt
if that were the case, and Taylor Kitsch was one of the fellows who topped a lot of lists.
Now that Cavil will be taking on the character, we know that we'll be seeing Geralt as an
adult.
But that doesn't mean we should totally count out any scenes of Geralt starting out.
This theory suggests that throughout the duration of the show, we'll be privy to flashbacks
depicting a younger Geralt learning the ways of monster hunting, and that there will in
fact be a younger version of the character cast in order to appease to these scenes.
Considering that the Last wish book operates in a flashback manner, flashbacks as a storytelling
device would fit in well with the series.
9 Clean Shaven This fan theory from redditor ThisShipIsGoingDown
is quite straight forward, but also brings up a good point.
In the books, Geralt of Rivia doesn't have a beard.
And the show will be based off of the books rather than the video games developed by CD
Projeck Red.
While they do go on to suggest that perhaps because of this, Geralt could potentially
be ugly and pale, others made sure to chime in that at various points in the book, like
during the party in Time of Contempt, people comment on how attractive Geralt is physically.
Regardless of his attractiveness, a Geralt with or without a beard surely won't affect
the plot of the show much, or the character's development, but rather, likely appease more
to fans of the video game series who aren't familiar with the Witcher in the novels.
8 The Eye Scar In what feels like a regurgitation of our
last number, another widely debated speculation is whether or not Geralt will have his eye
scar in the series!
Compared to the beard, the scar is a little bit more important; scars have stories behind
them.
Many believe that the scar, which did not appear in the books, will be in the show,
mainly because it's an iconic feature of Geralt's that the video game series established.
According to the games, in the Witcher 3 Geralt tells Ciri that he goe it from the Cockatrice
of Spalla, but never really does into detail about it further.
It could be a nice touch to include in the show and in Geralt's backstory, too.
7 Geralt meets Yennefer One theory suggests that the first meeting
between Geralt and Yennefer won't occur on screen or in a flashback.
Rather, the two will already be acquainted in the show when it begins, and perhaps later
on down the line we'll get more of an explanation about it if the flashback theory pans out.
That being said, Yennefer is arguably one of the most important characters to the series,
and their meeting occurs when one of Geralt's friends makes an ass of himself and he needs
the enchantress to save him.
As a form of payment, Yennefer enchants Geralt, who then goes around on a rampage in the city,
punishing everyone who has ever wronged her.
Entertaining, no?
6 The Last Wish When it comes to determining what the narrative
of the Witcher series could be, fans have turned to the books that the show will be
based off of.
The books are composed of short stories, and the Last wish novel contains six stories interspersed
with an overall narrative threading throughout; Geralt, after being injured in a battle, rests
inside of a temple, and each story is a flashback to recent events leading up to it.
The frame story, The Voice of Reason, is intercut with stories titled The Witcher, A Grain of
Truth, The Lesser Evil, A Question of Price, The Edge of the World and the Last Wish, all
of which contain key characters in the series, including Yennefer, who we know is definitely
in the show.
So, Witcher fans, what are your thoughts?
What components from these stories do you think will make it into the show?
Give us a shout in those comments below with your bets!
Side note, many people think that the Last Wish won't get all that much emphasis as
it does in the games; it's over rated, according to some, even though that wish is fundamental
to the series.
5 Trial of Grasses Many believe that the show will feature a
glimpse, if not a whole plot point, in which we see the Trail of Grasses; the painful trial
that a young witcher must undergo in order to become a full-fledged witcher.
Essentially, they must consume a cocktail of alchemical ingredients that are called
The Grasses with change their physiology, giving them incredibly fast reflexes, their
cat like eyes and other physical enhancements.
This is also the reason why Geralt's hair is white, having turned that colour thanks
to his trail.
According to legend, only three individuals of ten have survived the trial.
Since, the school's mages who guarded the formula have all been killed, meaning the
knowledge in which to create a Witcher is now lost.
4 Dandelion While it's yet to be confirmed, many a fan
believe that the character Dandelion, aka Julian Alfred Pankratz, will be in the Netflix
show.
Described as a poet, bard, minstrel and buddy of Geralt's, he's comic relief, and the
closest thing that Geralt has to a best friend, not counting his horse, or rather horses,
Roach.
That friend who makes an ass out of himself that we mentioned earlier?
That's Dandelion.
Considering Geralt's general demeanor, Dandelion could help alleviate some aspects of the show;
he has a bit of a reputation as a womanizer, who pretty much attempts to woo every young
woman he encounters, regardless of the situation.
And hey, a dash of humour never hurts, does it?
3 It's Going to be Garbage Feels more like an opinion than a theory,
doesn't it?
Well, recently, the audition sides for the show were leaked, and fans were freaking out,
since the way Geralt and Yennefer were depicted did not at all resemble the characters we
know and love.
Fear not, the showrunner, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, had already prepped fans that the sides would
likely be leaked, and to not worry because those weren't real scenes.
Despite this, there has been a growing anxiety within the Witcher's fan base about how
the show will be depicted, especially now that the dream casting of Geralt has been
squandered by the reality of an actor who recently made headlines for growing a mustache
and punching a pocket square into reality in a badly post-generated scene of the latest
Mission Impossible.
Here's hoping it won't be garbage though.
Please Netflix, don't let it suck.
2 The Lesser Evil One theory by redditor killingspeerx suggests
that the first season arc won't be a broken down version of The Last wish, but rather,
be one of its stories, The Lesser Evil.
This is because it has a strong theme that would resonate well with the character, and
serve as a solid introduction to the world.
I quote, "The Lesser Evil doesn't only contain an interesting story but it introduces
the audience to one of the main themes in the series which is choosing between two evils.
We get to see both sides of the conflict, Renfri and the Wizard, and how Witchers choose
to remain neutral and not middle in issues that are not their but then Geralt is faced
with a situation where he is forced to choose.
So he chooses between two evils, the evil that he thinks is the better option,"
1 The Show's Structure So far we've talked quite a bit about the
possible story lines that may appear in the Witcher.
But this overall theory/discussion on reddit started by gravemaster7 aims to figure out
what points will be good season premieres and finales, and what characters will be expanded
upon or reduced for the sake of the live action adaptation.
So what opinions have been flying around?
Some believe that the arc of the first season will be centered around Ciri with a couple
of contracts squeezed in between.
Others think that Geralt won't be taking on another other outside contracts outside
the main plot of the first season.
Overall though, it's generally accepted that the season will likely be adapting a
short story per season.
Yet again, on the flip side of that, some have speculated that the first two books will
be condensed into 8 episodes for the first season under the concept of less episodes,
higher quality, less of an episodic feel.
While the latter hasn't been confirmed by any means, some fans have speculated as much
since the show is looking to cast Ciri who doesn't appear in The Last wish.
There we have it friends!
