Photoshop Tutorial: How to Transform a Photo into a Sultry, Steamy Portrait - Duration: 9:13.Hi. This is Marty from Blue Lightning TV.
I'm going to show you how to transform a photo into a create a sexy, steamy portrait engulfed in thick fog.
Open a photo you'd like to use for this project.
I downloaded this one from Shutterstock.
The first step is to make a selection around your subject.
We'll use it to separate your subject from its background.
There are many ways to do this, but for this example, I'll use the Quick Selection Tool.
If you're using this tool, as well, I generally find that a 10 pixel radius works fine for
most sizes and resolutions.
Drag the tool over your subject to select it.
If you want to remove areas of the selection, press and hold Alt or Option as you drag over those areas.
To check your selection, press "Q" on your keyboard to see it as a quick mask.
Press "Q again to revert it back into a selection.
If you're using version CC 2015.5 or later, click the "Select and Mask" button or go to
Select and "Select and Mask".
If you're using an earlier version, click the "Refine Edge" button or go to Select and "Refine Edge".
I did in-depth tutorials on both Refine Edge and Select and Mask, so if you'd like to watch
them, I provided their links in my video's description below.
Check "Smart Radius" and drag the Radius slider to the right until you start seeing the fine,
wispy areas of your subject like the hair.
To finesse those areas, adjust the size of your brush here or press the right or left
bracket key on your keyboard.
Brush over the fine, wispy or feathery areas.
Output it as a "New Layer" and click OK.
Create a new document by pressing Ctrl + N on Windows or Cmd + N on a Mac.
Make its width: 1920 pixels, its height: 1080 pixels and its resolution: 150 pixels per inch.
The color mode is RGB and 8 bits per channel.
Click "Create" or OK.
Open back your subject.
To place it into your new document, press "v" to open your Move Tool and drag it onto
the tab of your new document.
Without releasing your mouse or pen, drag it down and release.
To resize it, open your Transform Tool by pressing Ctrl or Cmd + T. To see your Transform's
entire bounding box, press Ctrl or Cmd + 0.
Go to a corner and when you see a diagonal, double-arrow, press and hold Alt or Option
+ Shift as you drag it in or out.
To reposition it, go inside the bounding box and drag it.
To accept it, press Enter or Return.
To fit your document back onto your canvas, press Ctrl or Cmd + 0.
Make the background active and click the lock icon to unlock the layer.
Unlocking it allows us to add filters to it.
If your foreground and background colors aren't black and white respectively, press "D" on your keyboard.
Click the foreground color and for its Brightness, type in 20, which gives us a dark grey color.
Then, click OK.
Now, your foreground color is the dark grey we just typed in.
Go to Filter, Render and Clouds.
Open your Transform Tool.
Click the chain-link icon, which links the width and the height.
Whatever percentage we type into one, will be the same for the other.
In either field, type in 500.
To accept it, click the check-mark at the top or press Enter or Return twice.
Since the background's size was greatly increased, it extends way past the visible canvas.
So, we'll crop it.
Press Ctrl or Cmd + A to select the size of your canvas and go to Image and Crop.
To deselect it, press Ctrl or Cmd + D.
We'll convert our image into a Smart Object, so we can add filters to it, as well as, be
able to modify the filters at any time.
To do this, Shift-click the top layer to make it active, as well, and click the icon at
the upper, right corner to open the fly-out list.
Click "Convert to Smart Object".
Click the Adjustment Layer icon and click "Hue/Saturation".
Check "Colorize".
For the Hue, I'll type in 186, the Saturation: 44 and the Lightness: minus 9, however, feel
free to adjust these amounts.
Make your image active and go to Filter, Blur and Gaussian Blur.
Make the Radius: 14 pixels and click OK or press Enter or Return.
If you want to make your Layers panel a bit wider, so you can better see the layers' descriptions,
go the vertical line to the left of the eyeball icons and when you see a horizontal, double-arrow,
drag it to the left.
Make 2 copies of your image by pressing Ctrl or Cmd + J twice.
Click the Layer mask icon to make a layer mask next to the active layer.
Go to the layer mask and press and hold Alt or Option as you drag a copy of it next to
the layer below it.
Hide the bottom 2 layers and scroll to the bottom of the Layer panel.
Make the bottom layer active.
Go to Filter, Blur and Motion Blur.
Make the Angle: 0 degrees and the Distance 150 pixels.
Scroll to the top of the Layers panel and make the top layer visible and active.
Double-click the "Gaussian Blur" Smart Filter and change its Radius to 4 pixels.
Make the layer mask active and open your Brush Tool and Brush Picker.
Make its Size 150 pixels, the Hardness: 0% and the Opacity and Flow both 100%.
I'll brush around the edge of my subject and some other areas that I'd like to blur a lot.
Keep in mind, brushing over your image is actually brushing black over your layer mask,
which is hiding those areas of your image.
Make the layer below it visible and make its layer mask active.
Brush over some of the areas of your subject that you'd like to blur, as well.
If you want to finesse some areas of either of the blurs, make the respective layer mask
active, reduce the opacity of your brush and brush black or white over the areas of your
image that you'd like to add or remove blurs to.
To brush in white, press "x" on your keyboard to invert your foreground and background colors.
This is Marty from Blue Lightning TV.
Thanks for watching!

Waka Huia Te Raunikau Stainton - Duration: 28:51.When I became a minister,
I never thought
I'd be clearing unsettled spirits.
I travel long distances across Ngāti Porou.
But despite the challenges
I'm committed to my work
until God calls another.
Our reading today is from Ecclesias.
To every thing there is a season
and a time to every purpose
under the heaven.
A time to be born and a time to die
a time to plant
and a time to harvest.
A time to cast away stones
and a time to gather stones together.
A time to get
and a time to lose.
A time to weep
and a time to laugh.
a time to keep silence
and a time to speak
My name is Te Raunikau Stainton.
The name Te Raunikau originates from the scriptures
when Jesus rode a donkey through Jerusalem palm fronds were laid before him to mark his way.
I was born in Rangitukia.
My mother was Te Hoangaro.
My father was Kawa Kaa.
The story goes that when I was being born
I didn't want to come out.
My mother nearly died in childbirth.
When I was three months old
I was taken to live with my grandmother.
It was a good time.
I grew up with lots of love.
I was shown affection
everyone cared for me.
My grandfather was Ringatu.
Right up until he died
he never converted to the church.
I am the minister here
I'm the minister for Hicks Bay.
Women face many challenges in this role
because men still
don't like women holding positions of power.
It's like on our marae
they won't accept it.
Even though in Ngāti Porou
women have speaking rights.
But men are the be all and end all.
At least that's what they think.
But there've been occasions where we've had visitors
and there are no speakers,
and so I must stand and welcome them.
I'm happy to perform this duty.
But I will say,
oratory strengthens a woman's mettle.
When I was first called upon to be the minister
there were many elders here.
The minister was from Kauaetangohia.
His name was John Waenga.
He was near retirement
he wasn't being reimbursed for travel.
It's a long trip to come here from Whangaparaoa.
Fuel costs were high then.
He said the community needed to find a minister
because he'd been given a date to retire.
Afterwards the elders met
the men and women of that time
they declared I was to be their minister.
I responded: 'You need to be careful about who you select as a minister.
I'm a married woman
and my husband expressed views
that were hardly Christian.
So it would be a difficult role for me to accept.
Well the elders turned to me and said:
'There's nobody better than you.'
I went home. I was quite anxious
because I knew how my husband would react.
He could be quite stubborn.
My husband was Manu Te Uenuku Stainton.
He's from Hicks Bay.
He was a farmer.
When I married my husband
I learnt how to do everything
to section off paddocks
to improve the soil structure
purchase dry stock
inspect rams to breed with ewes.
I was also the second driver for the truck.
He did not want me to become a minister
but I told him, whatever's upsetting you
keep it to yourself, don't put it on me.
This is my time
if I want to be a minister I will.
I left him to stew over it.
But I had to consider
how are we going to live under the same roof?
It's no good for us to continue to argue.
I told him I've spent many years
helping you in your work
now it's my time.
So that's when I started as a minister.
It hasn't been an easy road.
There's nobody to show you the ropes
and ease people like me into the role.
There's no money in this work.
It was Archbishop Reeves that formalised
the 'ministers for the people' scheme.
It meant they wouldn't have to pay salaries.
The Māori synod has no money
and that's created a certain amount of hardship.
That's our burden to bear.
Sometimes we receive offerings from families.
Sometimes we don't get a cent.
But you carry on regardless.
We're at the mercy of the people
as to whether they pay, or not.
I never envisaged
I'd be called upon to bless sacred sites.
I had to clear a forestry site.
Workers were seeing things others didn't.
Naturally they were scared and downed tools.
I decided to meet with the staff
have a blessing for the staff
and then we went to the site.
There were major battles from here to the Waiapu
and from Waiapu to the other side.
Some of those battles continued
all the way to Tolaga Bay.
They fought over land.
Then there were those who tried to claim ownership.
Everyone was fighting.
A week later, the workers returned
they're still working now
that's good.
It was a steep learning curve for me
I'd never done that before.
Later I thought, they are departed souls lost in battle
no last rites were performed.
Unlike today we observe proper rituals for our dead.
That's when I developed protocols
and that includes teaching others
what needs to be done.
It's not easy
but it's the right thing to do.
Because it's our boys that are working in the forests
so us elders need to be aware
of their working environment on these lands.
The paper work is easy.
That aspect of the job is fine
but attending gatherings from here to Torere
it can become overwhelming
because of the distance.
Another part of my job includes going to burial grounds
eroded by strong winds from the east and west.
The soil has eroded exposing human remains.
These human bones are from a cemetery
where families have buried their dead.
But they didn't consider what would happen with the soil.
In Horoera along the hills there is a lot of erosion
the sand is swept away exposing the remains.
I get a phone call to come and lift the tapu
and reinter the remains
so yes, I bless the area.
Initially I thought: 'This isn't for me.'
But I reassessed:
'You're the minister in this district.
You can't say oh I don't want to do that
when the phone rings, of course you go.'
Don't drag your feet
but go with grace.
That's what's expected of me
to look after the people
that's why I was nominated for an honour.
I'm not the type of woman
to elevate myself to the top of the mountain.
I don't seek accolades.
So thank you all for being here
They've seen what I do.
They considered my work
and sought this honour.
But that was their own initiative
and I thank them.
It's been a great day
thank you all for coming
a wonderful day
I thank you all, indeed.
But personally
I'm not comfortable with these accolades
because that's not why you do this work.
You do it because it's your job
get the job done.
Working in the Ministry is much easier.
We've done the hard yards.
We've been to the top
we've been to the bottom
the whole shabang.
Women have done it all
so I have no concerns.
To every thing there is a season
and a time to every purpose
under the heaven.
A time to be born
and a time to die
a time to plant
and a time to harvest
A time to get
and a time to lose
A time to weep
and a time to laugh
a time to keep silence
and a time to speak.
A time to love
and a time to hate
a time to embrace
and a time to refrain from embracing
These are the words from the Holy Bible for us all.
I have many identities
I've been treated with dislike and distain.
It's like racism.
It's the world Māori were a part of.
If someone labels me: 'Lee Smith is Gay.'
I say: 'I'm not.
I am just a man.

How Rice is Planted in California: Breaking Ground! - Duration: 4:55.In this episode I want to give you guys a crash-course in the work that's involved
in planting rice fields here in California.
But first let's review a little bit.
As you guys know from the last couple episodes, we've drained the rice fields of the winter
water that helped decompose the straw from last year's crop.
We've also been working on our tractors and implements so that they're in tip-top
shape and can run this entire planting season, which is just ahead of us.
As you can see, the rice fields have completely dried out.
Also I'd like to mention, as many of you know through national coverage of the Oroville
Dam Spillway, California had an extremely wet winter.
That hasn't affected us yet because the rice fields are drying out.
However, since it's the third week in March now, any excessive rain that we get, that
could prevent us from starting the planting process.
Ideally we'd like to start the planting process in the first week of April.
However, unfortunately, as you can see the skies are grey and as you can hear there's
quite a bit of wind.
There is rain on the forecast.
So we'll see how that affects us moving forward.
Right now let's head into the equipment yard and I want to give you that overview
of what actually entails planting rice in California.
Now, I think a lot of people assume that when I say, planting rice is hard work and it takes
a month and a half.
They're thinking that the actual planting of the rice is what takes all the time.
But in fact that's the easiest part.
We just pick up the phone and call the crop-duster and they fly on the seed.
The taxing and hard work comes from preparing the ground to fly the seed on.
And that's what I want to give you an overview of.
So these are the tractors, right?
These are what are going to be pulling the implements that's going to break the ground.
Let's get right into the implements.
So, I've introduced these pieces of equipment to you before.
These are the pull-chisels.
It's the first implement we're going to use to initially break the ground.
Those chisel shanks down there are going to rip the ground about nine inches deep.
And we're going to do that diagonally across the field once.
And then return and chisel diagonally the opposite way a second time.
That's going to give us a good rip deep into the earth.
After the chisels we'll hook these discs up here, lay the wings out flat and start discing
the ripped up ground about 6 inches deep.
We'll go around the entire field in a spiral until everything has been disced.
We'll leave it for three days, letting the dirt dry out a bit, readjust the discs so
then we're only discing about 4 inches deep, further breaking down the dirt clods into
smaller even more manageable pieces.
After discing we'll hook-up these tri-planes here and run them through the field and that
will smooth out that soft, broken up dirt.
And that's essentially the groundwork which goes into preparing a field for planting rice.
The next steps would be applying fertilizer, flooding the field and, of course, calling
the crop-duster, ordering the seed to be flown on.
And there you have it guys, an overview of how we prepare our ground to plant rice seed.
You guys have any questions let me know.
Really quickly I'd like to thank Mark who's a local crop-duster in this area he contacted
me via Facebook and let me know that he was sending me this envelope.
Wow!
It's a 64GB pendrive of aerial crop-duster footage from his flights.
Mark, so awesome!
Thank you very much.
I can't wait to take a look at this footage.
And I definitely want to stop by the hanger and do a video with you guys over there.
Folks, thanks for watching.
I hope you guys enjoyed this educational video about how we prepare the rice fields for planting.
Please share it if you did.
I appreciate your comments and support.
Thank you very much!
Have a great day.

Did Joseph Smith Use A Gun At Carthage Jail? - Duration: 5:40.Willard Richards, the Secretary to the Prophet and a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles,
related what happened after Hyrum was shot: "Joseph opened the door two or three inches
with his left hand, discharged one barrel of a six shooter (pistol) at random in the
entry . . . Joseph continued snapping his revolver round the casing of the door into
the space as before, three barrels of which missed fire.
While Mr. Taylor with a walking stick stood by his side and knocked down the bayonets
and muskets which were constantly discharging through the doorway."
John Taylor says this: "He, however, instantly arose, and with a firm, quick step, and a
determined expression of countenance, approached the door, and pulling the six-shooter
. . . from his pocket, opened the door slightly, and snapped the pistol
six successive times."
Only three of the barrels, however, were discharged.
Some have argued against the idea that Joseph Smith died as a martyr because he used a gun
in the last moments of his life.
Part of my motivation for this was to show why he had the gun, what he was doing with
the gun, and to show that we don't have to be afraid or ashamed that he fought back.
He was a man of peace but when needed he would defend the innocent.
He had seen his brother, Hyrum, just shot and killed by this mob.
He sees these men, they're swearing oaths, they're saying they're going to kill him,
they're going to kill everybody in the room.
He had sworn to defend his brethren with his life and that was exactly what he was going
to do.
And I wanted to show this.
It wasn't like, you know, some kind of Western draw or somebody's well-armed, it was a small
gun, it had been smuggled in and Joseph had said, you know, I hate to see such things used
but we may have to defend ourselves.
He had hoped that the state would protect him until he could have a trial but the Governor
had broken his promise, he had left Carthage, they had heard from Dan Jones that the jailor
had said: We've gone through too much trouble to let old Joe Smith ever leave alive.
And they could see out the window, the mobbers, circling around like wolves.
This is not execution by the State after a trial, this is a group of men taking law into
their own hands and when those who are charged to protect you—the guards at the jail were
supposed to keep these men out—are in on the plot, I think you can stand and defend
yourself, which is what they were doing.
I wanted to show the Prophet was willing to defend, to the last breath, the freedoms of
others.
In 1842, Joseph said:"When my enemies take away my rights I will bear it and keep out
of the way; but if they take away your rights, I will fight for you."
He also said: "If I do not stand with those who will stand by me in the hour of trouble
and danger, without faltering, I give you leave to shoot me."
In a sermon in 1841, he said "What greater love hath any man than that he lay down his
life for his friend?
Then why not fight for our friend until we die?"
This painting shows that Joseph Smith was not afraid.
He was not a coward.
And, honestly, the safest place in this room is the corner where Willard Richards is shown
in this painting.
That's the farthest angle from those guns.
If you're gonna have to tilt those guns, the farthest angle is going to be that corner.
If Joseph was afraid, and a coward, he would have been in that corner, but he wasn't.
This, this is death.
He knows death is here.
His brother has just been killed.
He knows what's coming through this door.
Some would say that you could tell something about a person by how they respond to death,
to the threat of death, to the threat of personal harm to themselves.
And here we see, Joseph responding.
Did he run to the corner while John Taylor and Willard Richards were at the door?
No.
He was right there at the door, at the mouth of these guns.
It tells you that he was willing to look death in the face and not be afraid.
