If you're not okay with seeing an old man butt every like 5 minutes of this show, don't
watch it.
If you're not okay with sex scenes approximately every three minutes of this show, don't
watch it.
If you like Victorian outfits, watch it.
[swoosh] Hi NaturallyCurly world, I'm Grace.
Welcome to Watch & Go, the show where we do our hair and talk about tv shows, movies,
things we watch, things we listen to.
Harlots is a new Hulu series so it's only available on Hulu and it is rated mature because
it's about - you guessed it!
- Harlots.
So if any of you are watching with your children, if you are under 18, if you shouldn't be
watching this, TURN ME OFF!
If you're of age, then let's talk about Harlots.
[swoosh]
I have a boarding house for young ladies.
[Sleigh Bells' Crown On The Ground plays]
The city is made of our flesh.
We'll have our piece of it.
I offer you love.
For a harlot that doesn't exist.
I'm gonna use DevaCurl's Buildup Buster instead of my shampoo.
In honor of Small Business Month, which is May, I'm gonna be using the Two Girls With
Curls conditioner.
I'm gonna use this Tea Tree Scalp Care Anti-Thinning Root Lift Foam, haven't used it before,
hopefully it's good.
A little bit of Briogeo Curl Charisma Leave-In Defining Creme, and some DevaCurl Soft Hold
No-Crunch Styler.
I just washed, conditioned, put in some leave-in, and put my hair up in this tee towel.
Harlots is set in 18th century London and it's basically exactly what the name says.
So there are two rival houses, and they're basically trying to like…destroy each other.
So one of the houses is like the up-and-coming house, it's not as classy and they don't
live in as nice of a house.
And then the other house is like where all of the fancy harlots are, and you have to
like know an instrument and like two languages and like be really well groomed and stuff
to be a harlot there.
But they also abuse their harlots really badly.
As they say in the show, sex work is the world's oldest profession, it still exists today.
It definitely existed back then.
I actually did not realize like the extent to which it existed.
I think it's like one in three women in that time period did some form of sex work.
Back then it was like one of the only professions that women could do and make good money at.
Also in this show there are like these puritan ladies who go around like cursing the harlots
and they wear like these like lace things that only show their face and they like come
around here and then the rest of them is covered.
It looks really uncomfortable.
They stand outside screaming in the streets about how like everyone in there is going
to hell and like what big sinners they are.
There's like a sex scene and you can hear them screaming outside about how you're
like going to hell and stuff which is totally a buzzkill if you're trying to get down,
you know.
So, I'm rooting for the lower house because the madam at the upper house is the one who
like abuses all the harlots and she's like super manipulative and the one in like the
less nice house has like come up from the streets and she's like climbing her way
up the harlot ladder and I'm like you go, madam!
Oh another thing that I constantly think about while I'm watching this show is hygiene,
okay?
Do they shower every day?
Do they bathe between clients?
How do they—is there protection?
Like, oh my gosh.
And at one point I think one of the harlots dies of the the plague.
Because that was a thing back then.
The.
Plague.
The pla-the literal plague.
The Black Plague.
It's really stressful, if you're someone who like is into hygiene.
So basically, anyone.
Prepare to be stressed.
I'm gonna put this, uh, root lift foam in my hair.
One of the things that bothered me the most about this show is that the mistress of the
lower house, she has two daughters, and she sells their virginity.
She goes to the opera and she's like, I'm taking closed envelope bids.
For my daughters virginity.
Yeah, so it's, uh, it can be a pretty grim show, for sure.
Okay, I'mma put some of this gel in now.
Is it a show about female empowerment?
No, not really.
I put my hair back into a plop after I put the gel in just to set it a little bit, and
now I'm gonna…diffuse it.
Okay so this is my finished wash and go.
It's looking different than usual.
I don't dislike it, it just looks different.
It's fine.
I like it.
I don't know.
I would give Harlots a 3.5 out of 5, I'm going to keep watching it just because I am
loving the whole rival houses drama.
It's definitely not a show for everyone, obviously, because of the subject matter,
so think twice before you watch it but if you're into that kinda thing, definitely
watch it.
Have you watched this show?
What'd you think?
Do you have any other suggestions about what I should watch?
Or product recommendations?
Hit me up.
