Do You Do More Housework Than Your Roommate? - Duration: 5:09.

Who does more of the cleaning: you or your roommate?

It's you, right?

Sure, you forgot to take out the trash that one time, but that was the day your alarm

didn't go off, so it's pretty understandable.

But she always leaves her dirty dishes around, and she never seems to vacuum.

She's a great friend, but let's be honest, kind of a slob.

If you've ever felt like you work harder than everyone else around you, you're definitely

not the only one.

But you're also probably wrong.

See, your view of yourself is skewed by what's known as self-serving bias, where people tend

to view themselves in a good light.

They'll attribute positive events to themselves, and negative ones to external circumstances.

This happens in sports all the time, when the refs make a controversial call.

If your team loses, you're convinced that bad call is why you lost the game.

But if the call's against the other team and your team wins … well, it probably didn't

make that much of a difference, right?

You guys got to win anyway, obviously.

People also tend to think they're better than everyone else.

It's called the better-than-average effect: in studies, when people are asked how they

compare to others, they rate themselves as above average.

But that's not how averages work.

I mean, somebody has to be below average.

On top of that, people are convinced that they do more work than everybody else.

A study published in The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology in 1979 found that when

37 married couples were asked who did more of the couple's shared tasks, like cooking,

the total was almost always more than 100%.

Like, one partner would be sure she cooked 70% of the time, while the other would report

that he made 50% of the meals.

Which, you know, isn't how percentages work.

That study's has been replicated multiple times, and people consistently think they

do more work than their partner does.

We're so convinced that we're great, because whether things go right or wrong, this bias

saves face.

It helps you hang on to your self-esteem.

We all like to think highly of ourselves, and self-serving bias actually feels good.

In one experiment, people were asked to think about social situations while they were having

their brains scanned in an fMRI machine.

Thirty people were presented with 80 statements each — things like, "a friend sent you

a postcard," or, "a friend told you a lie."

They were then supposed to imagine this happening in real life, think about what might have

caused it, and press a button blaming the event on the situation, themselves, or someone

else.

But the researchers found that people were much more likely to blame something bad -- like,

"a friend told you a lie" -- on the situation or on someone else, instead of blaming it

on themselves.

But they also found that making those self-serving attributions activated a part of the brain

called the dorsal striatum.

It's associated with selecting actions, like whether to turn left or right in a maze,

and determining the probability that those actions will ultimately lead to a reward.

So the fact that the dorsal striatum lit up suggests that self-serving bias is rewarded

in the brain.

Where the real trouble comes in, though, is that we tend to do the opposite for those

around us.

With other people, we commit what's called the fundamental attribution error.

We think they act the way they do because of their personalities, rather than because

of the circumstances of the situation they're in.

In other words, instead of thinking that your roommate is really busy or really distracted

by something going on at work, you jump straight to "What a slob!"

But why?

The first factor is the availability heuristic, which is the tendency to think that an event

is more common if you can recall more specific instances of it.

You vividly remember every time you scrubbed the bathroom, but you might not have always

been around every time your roommate did.

Even if you clean exactly the same amount, your brain does some guessing based on the

times you can remember and decides that you're doing much more of the work.

Then there's the actor-observer bias, which is all about perspective.

When you're evaluating yourself, what's happening around you is the most prominent

thing.

You see yourself in multiple situations, so it's pretty obvious that changes in the

environment or the circumstances cause changes in how you act.

But when you evaluate others, your focus is often on them.

Their behavior is what's most visible to you, and you don't usually see them in all

the different environments and circumstances that might affect them.

Which means that it's easy to come to the conclusion that your lab partner is lazy or

your boss is a jerk.

Of course, it's not great to walk around assuming that other people are terrible.

So is there anything you can do to avoid these biases?

It's definitely tricky.

Studies suggest that you can even be biased about these biases: you tend to think other

people are much more likely to commit them than you are.

But just being aware of biases can make you less likely to commit them.

At least you'll know that you should think twice before you blame someone for the way

they're acting, or assuming that they never take out the trash.

Because let's be real: you want to be on good terms with your roommate.

After all, she knows where you live.

Papantonio: Corporate Insider Whistleblowers Are Saving Democracy - Duration: 3:14.

Edward Snowden, Chelsea Manning, Daniel Ellsberg – those are the names that most people think

of when they hear the term "whistleblower."

These names have been in the news for years as they helped uncover massive corruption

within our own government.

But there are other types of whistleblowers that deserve just as much recognition, and

those are the people who help uncover the fraud and corruption of massive corporations

that do business with the federal government and steal from the federal government.

These whistleblowers receive far less attention in the media, but they are attacked just as

viciously as people like Snowden and Manning.

America's whistleblower story actually begins around the time of the Civil War.

As the war began, contractors lined up to get lucrative government contracts to provide

supplies for the troops – a trend that continues today.

And just like they do in modern times, contractors in the 1860's wanted to get as much money

as possible while providing the lowest quality of service.

The government soon began receiving sick horses and sick mules, shoes that were falling apart,

food rations that were rotten, and rifles that wouldn't fire.

This is what their contractors were sending them after getting huge lucrative government

contracts.

In response to the massive amount of corruption in that contract system, Congress passed in

1863 the False Claims Act that allowed the government to sue companies who failed to

uphold their part of the deal when they receive federal contracts.

But the law also included a Qui Tam provision, and this provision has proven to be one of

the most powerful in that piece of legislation.

This provision allowed employees at these companies to sue the company on behalf of

the federal government if they discovered the company was trying to defraud the government

and they get to keep part of what they recover.

This Qui Tam provision is still in place today, and the results have been tremendous.

In 2015, the federal government was able to recoup more than $3.5 billion dollars from

corporations across the country in cases brought under the False Claims Act, with more than

70% of that coming directly from Qui Tam cases we find that the people who bring the cases

are able to keep a percentage of what they recover for the government.

In 2016, that number rose to $4.7 billion dollars in recoveries from whistleblowers.

Most of this money would have never been recovered had it not been for whistleblowers coming

forward to expose the conduct of these corrupt corporations.

And that's why we see corporate media attacking whistleblowers like Snowden and Manning – it

isn't because they think these people harmed our democracy; it's because they want to

discourage all forms of whistleblowing, especially when it could result in huge lawsuits against

corporations where corporations have to pay back the federal government for the fraud.

By attacking one kind of whistleblower relentlessly, they are hoping others will be too afraid

to come forward when they find out that the corporation that they're working for might

be defrauding the federal government.

Hey! Good morning and welcome to Larry Smith Outdoors!

Today we are up in Sturgeon Bay fishing with our good friend Lonney

from Green Bay Trophy Fishing and we have a special guest

Super Dave! And you know what? The winds finally

laid down, Lon. I'll tell ya! You tell me the fishing has been

absolutely tremendous! Bass fishing is open now, the pike have been biting, the walleyes

are biting, what are we gonna do first! We're gonna have a multi-species show today in

Sturgeon Bay, just to kind of showcase Door County to families and kids.

That's what we're really involved with. Love it! Guys that want to learn the bite,

so they can come up here and catch a lot of fish; walleyes, bass, and pike. We're gonna hit a bunch of key spots today

and put a multi-species day in the boat. Hey, I'll tell ya what! Speaking of hitting a bunch of

key spots, I hope we put some miles on because I filled up my 208 Warrior

and I want to see what this thing can do on this big water!

I know what it can do, but I just want to have fun doing it! Stay tuned!

I got one hanging on! What I did here is, I got a long lead out there

and I'm gonna let him swallow it. I got a pretty big sucker on there, it got pretty cold out,

and he's still hanging! He's on there!

Oh! Broke my line! (cameraman) What!?

Yep. Broke my line. Lonney, you got a hook? (yeah, yeah.)

Dang it! You know something? It might have been a bad knot job.

(cameraman) Yeah, I saw you tie that!

(drag pulling) There we go! Nice fish! (Larry, good job buddy)

Oh! Real nice fish! (need a net on that one brother?) Yep. It's a good one. Very nice fish!

Did you see that? That's a tank! (laughing)

(Larry it's a monster! Dude! That's a nice fish!) That is a big fish!

I love this stuff! Look how clear

that water is! What an awesome place to fish!

Now I got a really long lead. I went with about an 8ft lead. (Larry that's a big fish!)

That's a big bass! Gonna be able to get him?

Nice job! Whoo ho ho ho! Dude that's a 5 pounder! That's a tank!

Boom!!

(Laughing) Get lucky once in a while! That's what it's all about! Look at the size of that

Bass! That is a fat girl right there!

You know, Lonney told me to put a longer lead on my rod

and so I went with a longer lead. I started off with about a 3ft

lead and I'm looking at how clear this water is, and Lonney said hey

I've been seeing quite a few bass swimming aroung. Go with about an 8ft lead.

So I put that 8ft lead on there and hey look at that!

That's what happens! When it comes to fishing, little things make such a big difference.

And by adjusting that fluorocarbon leader, I'm using

10 lb test P-line on there, and hooking that minnow actually

sideways through the nostrils, that worked out good! Good tip Lonney!

a fabulous fishery up here in Sturgeon Bay. It's a multi-

we're gonna have a really good evening bite here I can guarantee you that!

We are gonna make some fish ruebens today! Fish ruebens! Alright!

Let's go through the batter. We're gonna make the fish first, then we'll put it on the bread

make the reuben. Alright! We're gonna get started! We're gonna use one egg,

a cast iron egg here, it won't crack. Give it to me

I know how to do that. One tablespoon of oil,

vegetable oil. (music)

We're gonna add a half cup

of beer, your favorite beer, whatever you like to use. Oh, PBR right around the corner here!

Nice! We're gonna mix that up a little.

And then we are gonna add one cup of bisquick.

Bisquik? I like like bisquick because bisquick browns up nice. It's your recipe Dave!

Sometimes all-purpose flour batters

don't want to brown in vegetable oil, so I use Bisquick. Ok.

We're gonna add a little heat, add about an eighth teaspoon of cayenne pepper,

one teaspoon of kosher salt. Alright.

Two and a half tablespoons of corn meal.

That will give the batter a little body. That's optional, but

that's what I prefer. That is ready to go on our fish!

I also took paper towel and diried off all my fish.

It's clouded up, and we came back into

this bay here and Lonney said the water temperature had come up about

4 degrees. Looks like a nice fish!

And they're definitely stacked in here! It's amazing how that water temperature

makes such a big difference.

You kind of grew up in this area, east side of Green Bay, and have been fishing up here

forever too, huh? Yeah. Nice job! Alright.

Metabones Speed Booster vs Fotasy Adapter - Canon EF to M43 - Duration: 3:55.

The Metabones Canon EF to micro

four-thirds speedbooster is a

revolutionary adapter that transforms

the field of view of your micro four

thirds camera into a Super 35 mm

equivalent. This incredible feature comes

at a steep price though. That's why I

wanted to see how it compared to a basic

no frills Fotasy Canon EOS to micro

four thirds adapter. Let's see how the

two compare.

Metabones is considered

top-of-the-line when it comes to lens

adapters. With one of these, you can feel

rest assured your camera will work well

with the lens. The adapters are

rock-solid made entirely from metal

components and whenever electronic

parts are necessary,

they're always of the highest quality

and work flawlessly. Metabones made its

mark though with the introduction of

their speed booster lineup. These adapters

are significantly more expensive than

their other adapters because they offer

the ability to widen the focal length of

the lens and increase its maximum

aperture by one stop. This is extremely

beneficial for micro four thirds shooters like

myself, who may need that extra bit of

room to work with in their lens. It does

come at a steep price though with most

Metabones adapters starting at $400 and

up. While Metabones offers the best

product for the highest premium price,

Fotasy does just the opposite.

Most of these adapters can be

bought for about $13 and provide one

function only, connecting a lens to your

camera. It's not always the tightest

connection and can wriggle from time to

time, but allows you to use the lens with

your camera. In many circumstances, that's

just about all you need. Fotasy's

Canon EOS to Micro Four Thirds adapter is

a bit more expensive than the others

because it adds an extra feature, a

built-in aperture ring. Canon EF lenses

do not have a manual aperture ring and

rely on an electronic connection with

the camera. It can be expensive to

manufacture an adapter that provides

this connection, so to get around this

Fotasy designed an adapter with its own

built-in iris. For this particular test, I

swapped these two adapters between a

Canon EF 28mm F2.8 and a Zeiss

Distagon 28mm F2 ZE lens. The

one thing I noticed immediately was the

wider focal area on the Metabones

adapter. The camera also automatically

adjusted with that bonus f-stop so when

the lens was set at F2.8, the camera

exposure actually read

F1.4. To help compare the quality of

images side-by-side, I've cropped in on

Metabones adapter footage to match the

same frame size as the Fotasy EOS adapter.

The Fotasy adapter was extremely hard to get

proper exposure at certain F stops, which

may explain why some images look blown out.

Comparing the two side-by-side prove

that it's not only easier to work with a

Metabones adapter, it also looks much

better. The main drawback of this

Fotasy adapater is its sporadic manual

aperture adjustments that provide

unscientific results. I've honestly never

had any issues with other Fotasy

adapters like this one and I believe the

main reason for it is this manual

aperture ring. It's also apparent that

while the bokeh on the Metabones

adapter eventually begins to sharpen as

the lens closes down, the background on

the Fotasy adapter remains the same.

That's due to the fact that I had to

leave the iris on the actual lens itself

wide open, while using the Fotasy

adapter. Without that control, you will

not be able to change the look within

your image.

I was also extremely surprised by the

locking mechanism on this adapter as

well. I may have received a bad model,

but the release pin would often get stuck.

I've never had this issue with other

Fotasy adapters like the MD to Micro

Four Thirds and Canon FD to Micro Four

Thirds adapters from the same brand.

Personally, I'm a major fan of Metabones

adapters because they simply work and

they work extraordinarily well and I

never have to worry about making quick

lens changes in the field. If you can't

afford it, then Fotasy or Fotodiox are

usually to reputable brands that sell

just about every lens to camera mount

combination. Just know that you may be

rolling the dice, since every adapter

does not seem to work as well as the
