Before the internet, if you told someone you just loved watching someone power wash their
driveway, you may have gotten some concerned glances.
Currently, though, there are literally millions of others out there that can relate to you.
"Oddly satisfying" videos and images have grown to fame in the last decade or so.
Images, videos, compilations and even entire blogs are dedicated to this phenomenon of
everyday objects or occurrences pleasing their viewers in an unexplainable way.
While the list of oddly satisfying objects or actions is infinite, these are the 15 most
popular.
Don't forget to like, subscribe and share!
15.
The Perfect Fit
Most things that we find oddly satisfying come perfect organization or the act of cleaning
away a mess.
The "perfect fit" category in the vast array of oddly satisfying things, is probably
the most popular.
Perfect fit videos can be found all over the web from YouTube and Reddit to average social
media platforms.
Most videos, whether it's one short example or a 20-minute compilation, can gain well
over millions of views.
The perfect fit category is fairly self explanatory.
The videos or images show one object fitting perfectly into another, as if they were made
for each other.
Some examples include a ball fitting perfectly inside a tube, puzzle pieces fitting seamlessly
together, a door that seems too large for a space but slips perfectly past a light fixture
or toilet, a can sitting in a jar and leaving virtually no space between them.
Of course these are just a few examples of an endless amount.
This clip is an exceptional example, though.
The small car whips quickly into a parallel parking space without incident.
Of course this was likely planned out with precise measuring and practice, as it was
done in a promo for the 2012 Mini Cooper..
From the viewer's point, however, it was a completely unexpected and perfect occurrence.
That moment of fear just before the car parks creates an unexplainable euphoria for fans.
14.
Crushing
Though we love to watch things fit perfectly together or be cleaned spotlessly, we also
share some peculiar interest in watching everyday items be destroyed.
In the past few years, hydraulic press videos have become more and more popular.
Starting with just a thousand or so views, most videos in this category now reach up
to 5 million views on average.
Several channels have posted these videos, but one channel is best known for their content.
Conveniently named Hydraulic Press Channel, it started 2015 and now claims nearly 2 million
subscribers.
In additon to this impressive sub count, HPC's most popular video has 12.6 million views.
Again this category is self explanatory, but for those curious about the details let's
look closer.
A hydraulic press is a device or machine that uses a hydraulic cylinder to create mass amounts
of pressure on whatever is place below it.
The press is commonly used in factory settings for forging, clinching, moulding, blanking,
punching, deep drawing, and metal forming.
Of course it isn't impossible for the everyday citizen to get their hands on this complex
piece of machinery.
In the videos posted by HPC, an object is placed on the press and a camera is set-up
in a nearby (yet safe) location.
Some items that have been crushed include: blocks of metal such as copper and aluminum,
a furby, finnish candy, amethyst and lava stones, sports balls, a rubix cube, literally
an entire toilet and a roll of toilet paper, and countless other items.
Slow motion and close up shots are also provided in the videos.
We can't say for sure why people have such a common interested in watching things be
severely crushed, but the niche certainly has a strong and ever growing audience.
Check out the channels most popular video, titled "Can you fold paper more than 7 times
with hydraulic press".
13.
Paper Sculptures
Of course there are vast groups of people that deeply care about or partake in the creation
of art so that it's an integral part of their everyday life.
Then again, most people don't consider themselves someone who cares about art, and often won't
even take the time to share artistic videos on their social media.
The art by Li Hongbo took a huge step in changing that ideology though.
Hongbo has been creating art for most of his life.
His paper sculptures significantly popularized his work, though.
He began the sculptures in 2013 and they immediately went viral.
The sculptures are mostly busts, intricate in detail, but other images were also created
and showcased.
At first glance, the sculpture looks like a simple cement, clay or marble.
Whenever extended the sculpture loses detail and takes the shape of a lengthy and flexible
accordion.
Hongbo's pieces are made 7,000 to 26,000 sheets of white paper stacked on top of one
another.
Glue is then applied to the piece and it is cut to display detail.
Each piece is cut by hand and while some machinery is used for cutting, it's also mostly done
by Hongbo.
When short clips of the works went viral most of them gained over 10 million views, though
it's hard to track as several videos and reuploads have traveled the web far and wide.
Aside from this piece being truly astonishing and detailed artwork, something about the
uniform piece changing into a fluid mass is satisfying to watch.
12.
Assembly Lines
Unlike the artwork of Hongbo, created entirely by hand, this category produces satisfaction
through use of automatic machinery.
Some thanks for this category goes to the TV Series "How It's Made".
The series, which airs on the Science channel, began in 2001 and is still going strong with
nearly 400 episodes.
Each episode takes the viewer on a journey to discover how everyday items are made.
Now, with the popularity attached to YouTube and social media, small clips of various assembly
lines make their way into the spotlight quite often.
From a machine that separates egg whites and yolk, to a machine that dispenses the perfect
amount of icing on cupcakes, various lines have the power to captivate the audience.
Though there is not a popular channel known for publishing this content, Buzzfeed Blue
did post an oddly satisfying machines video that attracted over 7 million views.
From inhuman speed to precise measurements these video will have you saying "why do
I love this so much?" as you click to the next compilation.
11.
Cake Decorating
Another popular art form is the culinary perfect of cake decorating.
For those of us less skilled in the kitchen, creating the perfect cake without incident
is a miracle in itself and adding a fast paced environment just intensifies the awe.
Oddly satisfying videos associated with cake decorating include several different methods
and decors.
Some find the videos of icing being dropped in floral shapes to be the best, others think
icing a cake in a perfectly smooth round plain fashion is the winner, and other viewers think
the glossy glaze of a smooth cake is at no contest.
Either way most viewers agree the methods and final products are inspiring.
As for the icing drops, special bags and shaped tips are used to created desired designs.
The artist spins a cake while quickly dropping the shapes and swiftly picking up the tool
to leave behind no mess and the accurate shape.
Most of us would squeeze out too much or move too slowly and leave behind a string of icing.
The smoothing cake videos cover the dessert in icing and spin it quickly while using a
flat scraping tool to smooth out the shape.
Here, it's important to move quickly and apply even pressure as the cake spins.
Again, this leaves plenty of room for mistakes that the average person wouldn't be able
to avoid.
In addition to the seamless process, the immaculately smooth surface of the cake creates satisfaction
as well.
The final process is similar in the others in the way the cake is spun around.
In this decoration, though, a slightly melted glossy icing is poured over the top of a cake.
Sometime a single color will be poured, but often other colors are added and gently mixed
to create designs.
Again this includes accurate speed in pouring the icing, too much will leave a mess and
not enough will create trouble down the road.
Not only is the artistic work a satisfying aspect, but many viewers find pleasure in
the glossy and colorful icing as a whole.
Many of these videos are created as compilations or tutorials and gain over 2 million views,
at least.
10.
Matches
Many people have always had an unexplainable interest in fire.
Sitting by a campfire and telling ghost stories is a pastime that goes so far back, many can't
originate it.
As time goes on, people find more and more complex ways to satisfy their desire for fire.
One of those ways is the strange trend of domino match assemblies.
The creator sets up matches in the way one would a domino line.
Some are just set in a long line or large circle, while others get creative and create
images such as an alien head, a heart, words, skull and bones, or other generally intricate
shapes and designs.
The matches are tightly setup next to one another, sometimes held together with rubber
bands, glue or other means and sometimes just placed together by sheer patience.
Once the setup is complete a single match is lit.
Because they're set so close together that single match lights the next one, and the
pattern continues until the entire scene is ablaze.
Keep in mind, though, that the whole ordeal happens in a split second.
Aside from the interesting assemblies and pure admiration of fire, it's hard to say
exactly what makes these videos so satisfying and entertaining to watch.
Either way, some of these videos have 5 million views or more.
9.
Paint Dipping
Professionally known as water transfer printing, "paint dipping" videos have been popular
for several years now.
For unknown reasons, videos of the trade began popping up all over the internet and now the
common video racks up about 3 million plus views.
Water transfer printing, which can also be described as hydrographics, is used to cover
a 3-D object with a design or print.
The method is commonly used on metal, plastic, glass, hard woods, and other similar materials.
First the object is prepared, primed, given a base coat and a clear coat.
These last two coats vary depending on the desired design.
Once the piece is ready, what's known as a polyvinyl alcohol hydrographic film, which
has been gravure-printed with the graphic image to be transferred, is carefully placed
on the surface of the water in a large dipping tank.
A solution is added to this layer and the object, often large car parts or safety gear,
is dipped.
The creator must move quickly to avoid wrinkles or air bubbles.
Once removed from the water the surface is gently smoothed out as it dries, just to assure
no blemishes were created.
8.
Slime Videos
Many of us have fond memories of making homemade slime as a child, or even purchasing a small
barrel of putty at the dollar store.
Though we all grew up and moved to other things, slime never died out amongst youth.
In fact, slime and putty even made a name for itself on the internet.
Slime videos have been increasingly popular over the last 2 years or so.
Videos on how to make slime, the process of various slimes, and even ASMR videos of someone
slapping slime around aimlessly all gain millions of views daily.
So we've probably all seen or at least heard of this trend but the better question is why?
Commenters explain that the videos are relaxing and satisfying, but many can't formulate a
reason why.
Put simply slime is created in a variety of ways.
Some include glitter while others have tiny styrofoam balls mixed in.
Some additives are purely for aesthetics but others are used to mix up the produced sounds
and textures of the slime.
Many viewers just find a calm hobby in viewing all the different slimes there are to offer
and create, like collecting baseball cards or nail polish.
Others see the videos as a therapeutic outlet.
In fact, slime has been used in therapy as a stimulant for those experience stress, OCD,
anxiety, autism and more.
Though it's hard to explain, the sound and texture as a natural calming effect for most.
So it's obvious that even if you're not physically touching the slime, the sounds
or visuals may have the same affect on you.
While millions drool over the calming slime videos with a plethora of styles, some viewers
admit they can't even watch slime videos as they find them "disgusting" or "repulsive".
Different strokes for different folks, you could say.
Nevertheless, the slime fanatic community grows everyday with new bloggers, collectors
and viewers crowding the stage.
7.
Mermaid Pillows
This category is a little stranger than the rest.
Sequined pillows have been in production for decades, however these new reversible pillows
went viral in early 2017 and have been insanely popular ever since.
The concept is that sequins with a different color on each side are sewn to the pillow
so that moving the sequins in one direction displays one color and vice versa.
These are often called mermaid pillows, as the texture resembles shining magical scales.
People began to randomly post videos on social media running their hands across the surface
of the pillow to change the sparkly colors.
In addition to these pillows, phone cases, message boards, clothing and full blankets
have been created using the same method.
The overall concept is simple, and it is hard to believe people are amazed by this.
The sparkling and colorful videos might change your mind though.
Many YouTube uploads have thousands or even millions of views.
On Facebook a regular upload of mermaid shorts has over 18 million views and nearly as many
shares.
ASMR videos, of course, have also been created using the mermaid fabric.
Aside from the mesmerizing decor, many claim that running their hands over the sequins
or even hearing the action has a soothing effect.
Some compare it to running their hands over a suede couch when they were a child, others
say it's more of a fidget simulation.
Either way, there's certainly an audience for this strange category of pleasure.
6.
Moon Sand
Also referred to as kinetic Sand, this toy is a substance made of 98% sand and 2% silicone
oil that mimics the physical properties of wet sand.
Moon sand was originally created to be used as a sculpting material, to allow sculpture
to create what can be described as a rough draft.
Now, however, kinetic sand is commonly sold as indoor play sand for children.
Kinetic sand resembles wet sand or brown sugar and can easily stick it itself and be molded
into various shapes.
The sand doesn't stick to other surfaces and never dries out.
This means the sand can be reused again and again and makes for a fairly easy cleanup.
While moon sand is popular with children, in recent years it has also attracted an adult
audience.
Moon sand can be found at adult gift shops and is labeled as "party entertainment".
It's safe to assume that a group of drunk adults would have a blast with moon sand.
Also, moon sand videos have become wide-spread across the internet.
Some videos showcase the sands different uses, tutorials on how to build small sculptures
or even, you guessed it, ASMR uses.
In ASMR videos the moon sand is displayed as the content creator runs their hands through
it, gently pats it, builds with it or cuts through it.
Some of these videos, regardless of their specific content, have over 10 million views.
Once again, viewers explain that the videos create a calming sensation.
5.
Carving and Sculpting
This entry is similar to the moon sand example.
Many videos of clay sculptors cutting into work or shaving designs using a spinner, have
gained millions of views as of late.
In some videos the artist simply cuts into a giant block of moist mud clay, while in
other videos they use smaller toys to carve away shapes.
Sometimes the cuts are so smooth and perfect that viewers find satisfaction in watching
the artistic process.
Other times the sound created by the cuts and carves create a sense of relaxation for
those that enjoy ASMR.
The great thing about this example is that it's something anyone can do themselves
and it encourages viewers to explore various methods of art.
It's fairly affordable to purchase your own sculpting materials or find an art club
nearby.
If you enjoy these videos, for whatever reason, take a risk and put some effort into creating
your own art.
You could be the next great creator.
Furthermore, it's been proven that art as a whole, and more specifically sculpting,
can be therapeutic.
4.
Shaving or Waxing
Of course there's a massive audience for beauty related videos.
Some viewers watch in hopes of gaining new skills, while others find the content oddly
satisfying.
These videos, though, reach an audience much larger than the beauty gurus and aspiring
artists of the world.
Videos of men getting their facial hair shaved in a precise and clean design, women getting
their eyebrow waxed and perfectly groomed, and even videos of both men and women getting
their nostrils waxed seem to have attracted a huge audience recently.
Some say they find satisfaction in seeing the clean result, others find it soothing
to see a "mess" ripped away and others just watch for the sheer shock of seeing someone
have their nose hair ripped out.
Regardless of the reason, the videos which are commonly posted to Instagram or Facebook,
can rack up millions of views and comments.
This content has become so popular that "shaving and waxing" compilations are even being
created.
3.
Calligraphy
Calligraphy is a form of art that is described as decorative handwriting or handwritten lettering
or the art of producing decorative handwriting or lettering with a pen or brush.
Calligraphy is an antique art form that has been around for literal centuries.
Though few people partake in the skill today, it has started to pick up in recent years.
Calligraphers began posting videos online, writing out simple words or recreating logos
with use of special calligraphy pens and markers.
The videos, likely originally posted to showcase work or offer tutorials, started taking off
in the "oddly satisfying" community.
Many of these videos are only a few seconds or minutes long, but gain up to 5 million
views.
Calligraphy compilations have also started hitting the web.
It's easy to see why some people adore these videos.
The fluid motion of the pen, and the beautiful final product is soothing and mesmerizing.
These viral videos have actually encouraged other artists to learn the skill and create
their own content.
It's truly inspiring to see the internet used as a tool to revive such a timeless art.
2.
Power Washing
A power, or pressure, washer is a high-pressure machine used to remove loose paint, mold,
grime, dust, mud, chewing gum and dirt from surfaces and objects such as buildings, vehicles
and concrete surfaces.
The machine shoots out water at such high pressures it can actually cause harm.
Pressure washing videos are considered the mother of all oddly satisfying videos.
Again, a self explanatory category, the videos are usually only a few minutes in length and
show the simple action of a dirty surface being stripped clean.
From pools to porches to entire buildings, power washers make cleaning any surface a
breeze.
Viewers admit that it's relaxing to watch the surface be cleaned so effortlessly and
in a uniform manner, as most clean in sections.
There are literally countless pressure washing videos and compilations all over the internet,
and many of them gain 5 million or more views.
In fact, some people have admitted to buying a pressure washer they didn't even need
after seeing a compilation or particularly pleasing video.
Color Coordination
Even the messiest people have a hint of compulsive organization desires deep inside them.
Videos or even photos of color coordination have an oddly satisfying effect on viewers
of all kinds.
Examples of color coordination are: clothes, foods, buildings, tools, makeup supplies,
toys, coins and anything you can think of that has color.
This category is more successful when presented in before and after photos, such as a bowl
of gummy bears with no order as the before, and the entire bowl arranged by color in the
after.
Of course some videos are out there which show the process of organization.
Other videos are presented as a compilation of photos that showcase the perfect display.
Take a look at some color coordinated closets and let us know if you get the sudden urge
to reorganize your life!
Many people spend hours a day on the internet and never hear about the "oddly satisfying"
phenomenon, I hope that you learned something new or found something on the list to oddly
satisfy you!
Don't forget to like, subscribe and share this video for more great content!
