Advanced Vocabulary | 5 English idioms about CHANGE - Duration: 10:14.

Hello I'm Emma from mmmEnglish!

In this lesson, I'll go over five common idioms

that sound very similar,

their meaning is also very similar.

They're all about change.

But the way that we use each of them in English

is a little different.

In some of my previous lessons like this one,

I explained why idioms are important

and what strategies you can use to learn them

and remember them.

Idioms can be a little tricky to learn

but they're fun to use and they definitely make English

more interesting and more entertaining.

This lesson is an advanced lesson,

one that will teach you the subtle differences

between some very similar idioms.

It will help you to use them correctly and sound

more natural like a native English speaker.

Now my advice with learning idioms is always to think

about a situation in your own life

where the meaning of the idiom is relevant

so you can associate the idiom

with a memory or an experience that you have.

It's going to help you to remember the idiom

but it will also mean you can use the idiom

whenever you talk about

that memory or that experience in English.

Super cool, right?

Okay so in this lesson we're focusing on idioms

with the word change.

Now something my dear dad used to tell me

is that change is the only constant in life.

It's the one thing that stays the same.

Everything around us is changing.

Our lives change, we change.

So these idioms are super relevant and helpful

so that you can express yourself.

When we move to a new house or we start a new job,

we meet new people, things change.

As we grow older, we change.

As certain things happen in our lives,

we also change.

Change isn't always easy

but being able to talk about it in English should be.

So let's start with

'to change your mind'

Now it's a common one,

one that you've probably heard before.

It's used when you make a decision

or you form an opinion

that's different to the one that you first had.

I was going to travel to Europe in September

but I've changed my mind,

I'm going to go Asia instead.

When I first met Paul, I thought he was odd

but now that I've got to know him a little better,

I've changed my mind!

I think he was probably just shy when I first met him.

Have you changed your mind about something recently?

Perhaps about a holiday

or maybe even your plans for the weekend.

Perhaps you've changed your mind about somebody,

you've changed your opinion about them.

If you can think of something tell me about it,

write a sentence in the comments

so I can check it for you.

Maybe you always wanted to study in America

but now you've decided you want to study in Australia.

Perhaps you've changed your mind.

So that was 'change your mind'.

What about 'to change your tune'

or a 'change of heart'?

'a change of scene'

'a change of pace'

Now all of these idioms are similar

but the way that we use them is slightly different,

something that you need to understand

and you need to pay attention to

if you want to sound

natural when you're speaking English.

'To change your tune' is usually used

when someone's opinion changes

or someone's behaviour changes

and usually it's from a negative to a positive one.

So imagine that you have a colleague

who's been complaining about your boss for months.

They don't get on well together,

they disagree on most things

and your colleague can be quite stubborn about it.

But suddenly, your colleague comes into the office

and starts saying that your boss is really nice

and that he's really great to work with.

He even goes and gets him a coffee every morning

and you think

'You've really changed your tune!'

They've changed their opinion

and they've changed the way that they

behave around this person.

This whole year I've been trying to convince

Shah, my fiance, to go on a holiday

and he's been saying

"No, it's too expensive we can't afford it!"

But last night he came home and

he said he wanted to buy tickets to Tokyo

and I thought

"Hmm he's really changed his tune."

His opinion about the holiday has completely changed.

He's changed his tune.

Now 'a change of heart' is slightly different.

You can see that it's treated like a noun phrase.

It's always a change of heart

and it's usually singular.

And this idiom is about a change in attitude.

A change in the way that you

feel about something.

So imagine that you found a dress

and it's perfect to wear to your friend's wedding.

It's gorgeous, you love it

but you're not sure if it's going to go with

the shoes that you've already got at home.

You're not sure if you should buy it.

But the shop assistant says

"If you have a change of heart,

you can return it tomorrow."

Now be careful that you don't use this idiom

in the same way as the previous ones.

You can't say "He changed his heart"

or "I changed my heart"

It doesn't work, it's not the same, it sounds a bit weird.

It's usually used with the verb 'have'.

He had a change of heart,

she will probably have a change of heart.

I still remember when I was

eighteen years old and I moved out of my family home.

I was moving into an apartment with

some friends in the city

and as I was saying goodbye to my parents,

I started feeling really sad that I was leaving

so my mum said "Well if you have a change of heart

and you decide to move back home,

you'll always be welcome."

which made me feel a lot better about leaving.

Now speaking of moving house, we have our next idiom,

'a change of scene'

or 'a change of scenery'.

And this idiom is used when

you move to different surroundings,

you know, a different environment.

It could be used to talk about where you live

or where you work.

Tim was tired of working at his father's company.

He wanted a change of scene

so he applied for a job in Sydney

I'm so tired of this little, tiny town.

I've been living here for twelve years.

I need a change of scenery!

I'm going to move to New York.

A change of pace is used in a similar way.

It talks about a change from your normal, daily routine

so you can use it to say that you need to try something

different for a while.

A change from what you're used to.

If you're not feeling very inspired by English these days

or very motivated to practise,

perhaps you need a change of pace.

You could travel to another country where you

have to use your English and practise more.

So there you have it!

Five useful idioms all about change,

ones that all have very similar meanings

but are used slightly differently.

You can be confident using any of them

with a native English speakers

from all English-speaking countries.

They're really useful ones to learn

because they're so common.

The best way to understand

the difference between them is to practise using them.

So get down in the comments

and write a few sentences using these idioms for me.

OH NO! MY ANTS ARE GONE! - Duration: 3:03.

Welcome, AC Family to Ant Bite Wednesday, covering the world of ants as they relate

to social media, global news, and ant keeping!

OMG guys, I have an important update on the Black Dragons, aka our young Polyrhachis colony

on El Dragon Island.

Don't panic, but apparently, they've disappeared!

If you're new to the channel, my very first paludarium called El Dragon Island was designed

to house some Polyrhachis ants, who naturally build nests in leaves.

The colony was still young, and were under siege by some wild pharaoh ants, that tried

to swim across the moat to get onto the island, but we added some Rasbora fish into the waters

to eat the pharaoh ant trespassers, whom we suspect killed our Titans last year.

Anyway, over time, everything was going as planned.

The ants made a nest in the dragon skull adorning the eastern rock plateau and workers emerged

once or twice a week to feed.

But a few weeks ago, they seemed to have skipped feedings and weren't seen foraging anymore.

I assumed their last meal had been bigger than usual so they had lots stored in their

crops.

Their nest was still there in the dragon's skull so I assumed all was well.

But now three weeks have passed.

I am currently away in the Caribbean Islands exploring ants, but I have an app which helps

me see the ant room in real time from my mobile whenever I want, and also communicate directly

with my house keeper who cares for all the ants in the Ant Room while I am away on these

exploration trips.

This time, she told me that she tried to check the skull because she hadn't seen the Black

Dragons for so long, and was shocked to discover the skull was empty!

I am completely flabbergasted by the Black Dragons' disappearance.

My house keeper has tried to look everywhere but doesn't see them in any of the leaves

nor drowned in the water.

I won't be able to check up on El Dragon nor the Black Dragons until I get back home two

weeks from now.

When I do, I will surely update you all on what has happened, but I am trying my best

not to panic just yet.

In all my years of ant keeping, I've come to learn that ants, being such small creatures,

can find and get to places that we humans as giants cannot see nor access.

Let's hope they made a nest in the soil or in a hidden spot of the leaves somewhere.

There is still hope for the Black Dragons.

Jonathan I remember in

kindergarten,

you know how they ask him in school

what they want to be when they grow up.

I remember very clearly that

he brought this little,

this little sheet of paper

and he said he wanted to be a professional

soccer player.

Playing soccer is a big opportunity.

I feel like I had more

opportunities over here

and in Mexico.

your father going to the US for a better

life

and you are just pretty much turning

your back and coming back over here to Mexico.

So at that point,

I knew that it was in his heart.

And that's what he wanted to do so that's why

we supported him 100%

and that decision that he made.

It's not easy knowing that

I always saw myself playing in

the U.S. but now that I'm in Mexico

I feel like I'm pretty much home.

While the pros for the

U.S. national team is that he was already there,

he had already earned a spot for

Mexico, the con is as he'd

have to pretty much start from

scratch and work his way up

and earn a position.

But

the pros was he gets

to play alongside,

you know, some of these players that

he's always looked up to like Chicharito

and to all these other players that are there,

it's an mazing feeling,

it's great.

It's a little bit weird wearing the jersey

over there in the U.S. because

when I was younger I will be in the

U.S. National Team.

Now that I'm

with the Mexican National Team in the

United States, it's a little bit different.

Transition from youth football to senior national

team is something that

wasn't easy to be honest.

I was not used to the style of play.

I mean all the experience they have

but I mean it's been great for me.

This is

kind of our territory,

this is our hometown.

We have a lot of support.

We have a lot of family,

a lot of friends...

a lot of young kids from

the Athletico Soccer Club that look up to

a candidate for president United States they were seeking to have what is called

undisclosed participation in a u.s. entity in the United States these are

bad judgment this is intelligence tradecraft of

against a candidate to steer an election there's nothing more grave when it comes

to abuse of our legal and intelligent system and as as we conclude here what

is to be done about strong what is to be done by Congress about what now is

before them in closed hearings as well as in some some documents of the

millions that they've requested the the Congress is being stymied in its

oversight role there seems no work for them to go what are the next steps

particularly as we see that this is a a significant operation that was designed

specifically to undercut our candidate Donald Trump and ultimately president

Donald Trump this is a level of criminality beyond the pale look the

president needs to rip the lid off this as there's every member of Congress any

person involved in any sort of an oversight capacity or any you know

management position whether it's the president the Attorney General

whoever has any influence whatsoever needs to rip the lid off this and make

it public this is such a grave abuse of power and authority it's like nothing

else we've seen in our history this makes you know the the Nixon Watergate

burglary look like Keystone Cops stuff this is very grave and the public has

got it has a right to know and should know as soon as possible all the details

the Orange County chairman is running against him I would argue it's better

for they have that the two Republicans again in the race and I think that can

very well happen that's quite a turn of fate isn't it

although I do hopefully get John Cox who is running for the Senate what are the

odds the government I would say very slim the California you may sleep well

we're now in third place in California the state I grew up in there did none of

the above Republican Party as is Ed Rollins licks

Trump's New Border Wall Has Special "Feature" That Stops Illegals In Their Tracks

Construction began on Friday on the US-Mexico border wall in San Diego County.

Now, it is being reported that President Donald Trump has included a special new "feature"

on his long-promised border wall that will stop illegal immigrants in their tracks.

President Donald Trump promised the American people that he would work diligently to fix

our broken immigration system, and he is now delivering on that vow.

During his campaign for the White House and at rallies after he won the presidency, Trump

touted the massive border wall he would build between the U.S. and Mexico.

Well, on Friday, construction finally began in Southern California.

True to his word, President Trump is building the best border wall American patriots could

have hoped for, complete with a special new feature sure to stop illegal immigrants in

their tracks: an anti-climbing plate.

Construction started Friday on the US-Mexico border wall project at Border Field State

Park, the third project in San Diego County.

The work will replace about 14 miles of scrap metal wall that stands up to 10 feet high

with a wall between 18 and 30 feet tall.

The new wall will also have an anti-climbing plate, Customs and Border Protection said.

Crews will build the wall starting half a mile from the Pacific Ocean, east to the bottom

of Otay Mountain in East County.

Work is being done by SLSCO, a Texas-based construction company, at a cost of $147 million.

While the CBP said the existing wall was effective, it was erected in the 1990s from Vietnam-era

scrap metal and needed replacing to deal with what the CBP described as an increased cross-border

threat.

"The construction of this new substantial wall will improve overall border security,

the safety and effectiveness of Border Patrol agents, the safety of the public, and will

enhance the atmosphere for business and commerce in the area," said Rodney Scott, the Chief

Patrol Agent for the San Diego Sector.

"Under this president's leadership, we have a renewed commitment to secure our border,"

added Ronald Vitiello, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Acting Deputy Commissioner.

"The new primary wall-project represents an important milestone in our work to secure

the international border."

"Not only does it significantly upgrade our existing infrastructure in San Diego,

it also marks the third concurrent wall project in the U.S. and reflects CBP's unwavering

commitment to secure our borders and protect our Nation," Vitiello concluded.

Two other border projects in progress included two miles of wall in Calexico, California,

and 20 miles of border wall in Santa Teresa, New Mexico.

President Donald Trump visited San Diego, California, in March in order to review eight

massive prototypes for the wall.

While he was there, his conversation with a Border Patrol Agent was captured on camera,

revealing what the current wall is made of.

President Trump was noticeably stunned when he learned the truth.

An unidentified agent told the president that guards in his area had built a wall out of

scrap metal, having no other materials to work with, and even this makeshift barrier

was 95 percent effective.

"There was effectively no border in San Diego.

It was a chaotic situation," the agent told Trump.

"We set it in place really just to delineate where the border was.

And it changed our environment."

There can be no doubt that President Trump's border wall will be successful — if scrap

metal can keep so many undocumented immigrants at bay, the impenetrable barrier Trump's

team is working on could solve our immigration problems almost entirely.

Kate and Andy share 13-year-old daughter Frances Beatrix. Andy, the brother of actor and comedian David Spade, also addressed reports of his late wife's mental illness

"Kate suffered from depression and anxiety for many years. She was actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease, one that takes far too many lives

We were in touch with her the night before and she sounded happy," Andy said. "There was no indication and no warning that she would do this

It was a complete shock. And it clearly wasn't her. There were personal demons she was battling

" Andy also spoke about the couple's marital troubles, revealing that he and Kate were focused on their daughter

"For the past 10 months we had been living separately, but within a few blocks of each other

Bea was living with both of us and we saw each other or spoke every day. We ate many meals together as a family and continued to vacation together as a family

Our daughter was our priority," he said. "We were not legally separated, and never even discussed divorce

We were best friends trying to work through our problems in the best way we knew how

We were together for 35 years. We loved each other very much and simply needed a break," Andy continued

PEOPLE confirmed that Kate was found dead Tuesday of an apparent suicide in her New York City apartment

Andy concluded his statement by shutting down rumors surrounding Kate's death and the finances of their new accessories brand, Frances Valentine

"This is the truth. Anything else that is out there right now is false. She was actively seeking help for depression and anxiety over the last 5 years, seeing a doctor on a regular basis and taking medication for both depression and anxiety

There was no substance or alcohol abuse. There were no business problems," Andy said

He added, "We loved creating our businesses together. We were co-parenting our beautiful daughter

I have yet to see any note left behind and am appalled that a private message to my daughter has been so heartlessly shared with the media

My main concern is Bea and protecting her privacy as she deals with the unimaginable grief of losing her mother

upon entering it I was really in disbelief of how great it really is because

there's so many opportunities that it offers to our veterans and it's a

hundred percent free on top of that the veterans education program at Fresno

State is specifically designed for veterans and service members who

otherwise may not have an opportunity to attend college and it also provides us

an opportunity to eliminate some of the barriers that are common for veterans in

college so when I came to Fresno State initially I had a stack full of

transcripts from various colleges and so I went over to the administration office

and lay all my transcripts on the desk and next thing you know they showed me the door I

was like well don't have what it takes to get in I was like okay well there's

got to be another way about a year before I got out of the Navy I started

looking into my college options I came to Fresno State trying to see if

I could get in and they said I was short the golden classes and SAT scores I didn't know

what those were but then they said you go over the veterans education program

they might be able to do something for you once they're accepted into the

program they take what's called the CSU golden four which includes English math

critical thinking communication as well as a introductory University course so I

went over there and they said yeah we can get you started we'll give you these

classes for free and then after you've completed these classes you'll be able

to matriculate and be a full time student and I was thinking myself

wow that sounds kind of too good to be true

it sounded like the impossible I mean how can I go to school to Fresno State

and have everything paid for I didn't quite believe the program was as

good as it was advertised there had to be a catch somewhere and that there

turned out to be none it was everything that was advertised and I enrolled in it

as soon as I could I wanted a sign up that day and begin immediately with a

small interview and review of my transcripts I was able to be accepted

into the Veterans education program the program was there to guide us in the

right direction and to help us be prepared for complete matriculation

and introduction into the wild which is the University students take these

courses as a cohort meaning that they take the same courses in the same

classroom with the same instructors we find that this really leverages the

camaraderie that a lot of the veterans feel and it increases the student

success you know I love my cohorts I love the leadership there you know

they do a wonderful job they constantly have the seven army values circulating

throughout the building they are there for you they will provide everything

that you need from outstanding teachers you get the ratio of 1 to 10 for

professors to students which is awesome I've never had that type of opportunity

handed to me one of the special things about this program is that comes at no

cost tutiton books course materials parking passes IDs even tablets are all

provided at no cost they give us everything we need and they

help us and guide us to keep us on the path to focus on school work we have a lounge

area so that you have a place to take a step back outside the classroom and come

and collect your thoughts and do your homework and connect with other

veterans on campus this is not merely you know a student-teacher type

relationship that we have they essentially have signed us mentors and

the caliber of instructors that they have for this program is absolutely

outstanding they all show that they love and they for the program you know they

not just at work because that work they really show that they really care it's

not just business it's family it's somebody I can go to and ask for help

when I need it after successful completion of the program students are

able to matriculate as full-time undergraduate degree seeking students

it's gonna affect the greater and wider community and when we matriculate and

graduate we're truly representing Fresno State at that point

I hope to honor this program and honor Fresno State now after taking all the

classes and being able to handle the classwork I know that I'll be able to

handle college and be able around my degree for any veterans out there that

feel that they do not have what it takes in their transcripts to attend Fresno

State I highly advise you to go to the veterans education program they will

help you they will help you succeed like they have done for me

this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity there is no other program like this
