Lil Wayne's 'Tha Carter V': 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com - Duration: 13:29.

Lil Wayne's 'Tha Carter V': 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com

Lil Wayne has spent the past few years embroiled in a legal battle with Universal Music Group and his former record label Cash Money.

According to Pitchfork, the first documents for the suit were filed back in May 2015, and the notice for dismissal was filed on May 23, 2018.

Universal has recently decided to settle the suit, and pay Wayne "well over $10 million.".

In addition to the settlement, Universal will reportedly release Wayne's long-delayed album Tha Carter V.

The album has been in the works for years, and has experienced a number of setbacks due to underperforming singles and the rapper's numerous legal troubles.

It has since gained a mythic status among Wayne's fans, as it is intended to be the final installment in his beloved Tha Carter series.

Here's what you need to know about Lil Wayne's album Tha Carter V:.

It Was First Announced Back in 2012.

@originalbumbu …for the weekend A post shared by Lil Wayne (@liltunechi) on Jun 1, 2018 at 9:11am PDT.

In a 2012 interview with MTV News, Wayne announced that was going to release Tha Carter V shortly after I Am Not a Human Being II.

He told MTV that the sonic direction of the two albums would be similar, and that Tha Carter V would be his swan song.

"I know y'all want me around for a bit, and Carter V is my last album," he said, "Man, I've been rappin' since I was 8 years old.

I'm 30 now, man.

That's a long time, man.".

The initial recording sessions for Tha Carter V took place between 2013-14, during which time Wayne maintained that it would be his last solo album.

"Whenever I have to pitch in for a Young Money album, a Like Father, Like Son album and something like that and maybe something out of the blue, I will", he explained, "but the way I'm working on this album, it's to me, the way it seems like now, it seems like it'll be impossible for me to work this hard again for anything else.".

Billboard reports that a rumored tracklist for Tha Carter V leaked online in 2014.

Check it out below:.

"Intro" featuring Drake and The Game.

"Flown" featuring Birdman and Future.

"Kill 'Em" featuring Meek Mill. "KIRN".

"Not a Chance" featuring Future and The Weeknd.

"No Answers" featuring Kanye West.

"Interlude".

"They Ain't With Us" featuring Drake and Young Thug.

"Tomorrow Ain't Tomorrow" featuring Rich Home Quan.

"Can't Trust 'Em" featuring Bun B and J.

Cole. 'Forty" featuring Nas and Future.

"The End – Outro" featuring Birdman.

Additional producers and musicians who have been involved in the making of the album include Boi-1da, Mike WiLL Made-It, Soulja Boy, Mannie Fresh, Kendrick Lamar and Justin Beiber.

Wayne Believes That Birdman is to Blame for the Delay.

Over the years, rumors have surfaced that Bryan "Birdman" Williams, the President of Cash Money Records, is the driving force behind the album's delay.

Most of these rumors stem from the Twitter rant that Wayne went on in 2014, where he said point blank: "My album won't and hasn't been released [because] Baby & Cash Money Rec.

refuse to release it." The rapper added: "I want off this label and nothing to do with these people but unfortunately it ain't that easy.".

He went on to say that it is Universal Music Group is the real reason behind the album's delay.

"Me not putting out Tha Carter V, why wouldn't I?" he asked, "I've got a lot of money invested into Young Money and Wayne.

So for me, I want to get some of mine's back, you understand me?" Birdman concluded his statement by saying "I think the world deserves to hear Tha Carter V.".

Wayne criticized Birdman again in 2018, after the latter told RapUp TV that the album is "definitely coming out.

" Wayne told TMZ that Birdman was "full of s**t" and that he's just trying to "look like the nice guy" after stifling his output for so long.

There Have Been 7 Promotional Singles.

Wayne began releasing promotional singles for Tha Carter V back in 2014, when it was originally set to come out.

The first single was "Believe Me" featuring Drake, which peaked at #26 on the Billboard Hot 100, and received general acclaim from critics.

Wayne followed it up with "D'usse", "Krazy", and "Gotti" featuring The Lox, none of which performed very well.

"Off Day" and "Start a Fire", featuring Christina Milian, were the next singles released, though they failed to chart on Billboard. "Grindin", another Drake collaboration, failed to generate much heat either, peaking at #49 on the Hot 100, despite having a flashy music video to back it up.

Check it out below.

The release date for Tha Carter V came and went, and Wayne channeled his frustrations into a series of free mixtapes.

Sorry 4 the Wait 2, FWA (Free Weezy Album) and No Ceilings 2 were all released in 2015, and saw the emcee taking aim at Birdman and Cash Money in his lyrics.

These mixtapes received lukewarm reviews, with many critics feeling that Wayne was focusing on quantity over quality.

On the song "CoCo", Wayne rapped: "Now I don't want no problems, I just want my money/Ain't gotta hold no conversation, nor my luggage/Tell whoever's countin' that I'm on a hundred/Woo, Birdman Junior – more like Ugly Duckling.

Wayne also released a joint album with 2 Chainz called ColleGrove in 2016, but due to Wayne's lawsuit with Cash Money Records, only 2 Chainz was credited as the primary artist.

2 Chainz would later refer to the album as a "tribute" to Wayne, given his legal restrictions.

Martin Shkreli Leaked Music From the Album in 2017.

In a 2016 interview with DJ Akademiks, businessman Martin Shkreli claimed that he had obtained what he believed to be an authentic copy of Tha Carter V.

"Nobody knows what Tha Carter V is" he said.

"In fact, nobody can say until Lil Wayne says, 'This is Tha Carter V.

He's controlling it.' If he says, 'You know what? That two-CD thing that Martin has? I'm gonna add some stuff.

I'm gonna take a track off and put in five more.' If he says that's Tha Carter V, then that's Tha Carter V, it's his call.

Not my call.".

A few months later, Shkreli leaked a couple of snippets off the album, including one reportedly called "Mona Lisa", which features Kendrick Lamar.

Many fans were skeptical of Shkreli's claims, but Daily Caller reporter Alex Pfeiffer confirmed that the album was legitimate.

"Martin told me that Lil Wayne sold his Bugatti Veyron to some guy.

The guy then discovered CDs and assorted personal belongings of Wayne in the car," he told Pigeons & Plans.

"[The guy] called Wayne and asked if he wanted them back and Wayne said 'no.' One of these CDs turned out to be Tha Carter V and he sold it to Shkreli.".

While the snippets that Shkreli leaked sound legitimate, and may have been set to appear on Tha Carter V at one point, it remains to be seen whether they will be on the final tracklist.

TMZ reported that Wayne was "pissed" about the Shkreli leaks, as he felt that Shkreli was ruining the experience for the rest of his fans.

Wayne Says it Will be His Most Personal Album.

Unai Emery identifies the £22m star who will 'lead' his new look Arsenal team ● News Now ● #AFC - Duration: 1:46.

Arsenal transfer news includes the latest on a possible move for Bernd Leno

Bernd Leno has emerged as one of Unai Emery's top transfer targets at Arsenal this summer,

according to reports.

The German keeper has been linked with Arsenal for the past few months, with head of recruitment

Sven Mislintat known to be keen on the 26-year-old.

But now sports journalist Kike Marin reports that Leno is the keeper Emery wants to 'lead'

his new look team.

Leno has spent the past seven years at Bayer Leverkusen but the Bundesliga side expect

the stopper, who has a £22 million release clause, to move on this summer.

In preparation for Leno's exit, they have brought in Lukas Hradecky from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller said: "Leno can leave but only on our terms.

"We are still in constant and open exchange with Bernd and his manager.

Leno already had a concrete offer from Napoli in 2017, but we didn't have an equivalent

backup at the time.

"He had to stay and he did really well last season, but we thought Bernd's desire to

leave would resurface so and so with the arrival of Lukáš Hrádecký we have a high quality

successor."

The National for June 7, 2018 - Duration: 47:32.

(*)

(*)

>> Andrew: TONIGHT THE VOTES

HAVE BEEN CAST AND COUNTED AND

THE PEOPLE OF ONTARIO HAVE SWEPT

OUT THE OLD, SAYING A RESOUNDING

GOODBYE TO THE LONG GOVERNING

LIBERALS AND HELLO TO THE MAN

THAT YOU CAN SOON CALL PREMIER,

DOUG FORD.

WHAT WILL A PROGRESSIVE

CONSERVATIVE ONTARIO MEAN FOR

CANADA?

>> Ian: ALSO TONIGHT WE'RE IN

QUÉBEC CITY ON THE EVE OF AN

UNCERTAIN GATHERING OF G7

LEADERS.

PROTESTERS HAVE TAKEN TO THE

STREET, A RITUAL WITH THE G7

MEETINGS AND DONALD TRUMP IS

STILL AT HOME BUT TONIGHT HE'S

CALLING JUSTIN TRUDEAU "SO

INDIGNANT."

IT'S A FAMILY AFFAIR THAT MIGHT

JUST GET UGLY.

THIS IS "THE NATIONAL."

(*)

>> Andrew: THE BATTLE FOR

ONTARIO IS OVER AND SO ARE 15

YEARS OF LIBERAL GOVERNMENT.

THE PROVINCIAL ELECTION CAMPAIGN

WAS DRAMATIC AND COMBATIVE.

SHAPED IN PART BY THE FACT THAT

SOME VOTERS DIDN'T LIKE ANY OF

THEIR OPTIONS.

BUT THERE WERE THREE DISTINCT

POLITICAL DIRECTIONS ON OFFER

AND IN THE END ONE RAN AWAY WITH

THE SHOW.

DOUG FORD'S POPULOUS MESSAGE HAS

LED THE PROGRESSIVE

CONSERVATIVES BACK TO POWER AND,

REMEMBER, THAT IT WAS JUST

MONTHS AGO THAT THE PARTY SEEMED

TO BE IN COMPLETE DISARRAY.

BUT NONE OF THAT MATTERS NOW.

HANNAH THIBEDEAU IS IN TORONTO

TONIGHT WHERE THE DUST IS STILL

SETTLING.

[Cheers and Applause]

>> Reporter: IT'S A BIG WIN.

>> MY FRIENDS, THIS VICTORY

BELONGS TO YOU.

[Cheers and Applause]

>> Reporter: DOUG FORD

DELIVERED A HUGE MAJORITY

PROGRESSIVE CONSERVATIVE

GOVERNMENT.

>> WE HAVE SENT A CLEAR MESSAGE

TO THE WORLD, ONTARIO IS OPEN

FOR BUSINESS.

[Cheers and Applause]

>> Reporter: THE TORIES PULLED

THIS OFF IN SPITE OF MANY

OBSTACLES.

>> IT'S NOT MY VALUE AND NOT HOW

I WAS RAISED AND NOT WHO I AM.

>> Reporter: THE P.C.s

DIDN'T HAVE A LEADER IN LATE

JANUARY AFTER PATRICK BROWN

STEPPED DOWN AMID ALLEGATIONS OF

SEXUAL ASSAULT.

AND THERE WERE MANY OTHER

HURDLES ALONG THE WAY.

FORD HIMSELF GETTING CAUGHT ON

AUDIOTAPE SELLING FAKE

MEMBERSHIPS FOR HIS PREFERRED

CANDIDATE, KINGA SURMA, AND NOT

TELLING VOTERS HOW HE'LL PAY FOR

HIS ELECTION PROMISES.

AND HIS SISTER-IN-LAW SUING HIM

FOR MISMANAGING THE FAMILY

BUSINESS.

>> IT'S HEARTBREAKING,

HEARTBREAKING.

>> Reporter: BUT THE FORD TEAM

WERE ABLE TO FEND IT ALL OFF.

ANDREA HORWATH DID GIFFORD A RUN

FOR HIS MONEY, BUT WAS ONLY ABLE

TO OBTAIN THE OFFICIAL

OPPOSITION CONSOLATION PRIZE.

>> I TOLD THE PREMIER-DESIGNATE

THAT NEW DEMOCRATS WILL WORK

EACH AND EVERY DAY FOR THE

CHANGE THAT FAMILIES NEED TO

MAKE LIFE BETTER FOR ALL OF US,

FOR ALL OF US.

>> Reporter: THE N.D.P.

STARTED IN THIRD BUT PICKED UP

STEAM AFTER THIS...

>> YOU KNOW WHAT...

>> Reporter: PEOPLE STARTED TO

QUESTION HER ACCOUNTING AND IT

SEEMED THAT SHE WAS NOT ONLY

FIGHTING DOUG FORD BUT ALSO THE

GHOST OF BOB RAE.

>> THIS IS NOT 1990, AND I AM

NOT BOB RAE.

IN FACT, HE'S A LIBERAL NOW.

>> Reporter: AS FOR THE

LIBERALS IT WAS A RESOUNDING

DEFEAT AFTER 15 YEARS IN POWER.

>> I AM RESIGNING AS A LEADER OF

THE ONTARIO LIBERAL PARTY.

I KNOW.

WE'RE NOT... GOING TO CRY.

I HAVE SPOKEN TO THE PARTY

PRESIDENT AND ASKED HIM TO START

THE PROCESS OF CHOOSING AN

INTERIM LEADER.

AND IT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO.

THERE IS ANOTHER GENERATION, AND

I AM PASSING THE TORCH TO THAT

GENERATION.

[Applause]

>> Reporter: KATHLEEN WYNNE

REALLY HAD NO CHOICE.

THIS IS THE WORST RESULT FOR THE

LIBERALS SINCE 1951 WHEN THEY

TOOK SEVEN SEATS.

HANNAH THIBEDEAU, CBC NEWS,

TORONTO.

>> Andrew: NO SO NOW THAT THE

PEOPLE OF ONTARIO HAVE SPOKEN

LET'S LISTEN A BIT MORE FROM THE

MAN WHO WILL BECOME PREMIER.

HERE'S WHAT DOUG FORD HAD TO SAY

AFTER SECURING THE WIN EARLIER

THIS EVENING...

>> WE HAVE DELIVERED A

GOVERNMENT THAT IS FOR THE

PEOPLE.

[Applause]

A GOVERNMENT THAT WILL RESPECT

YOUR HARD-EARNED TAX DOLLARS

AND, MY FRIENDS, THE PARTY WITH

THE TAXPAYERS' MONEY IS OVER.

IT'S DONE!

[Cheers and Applause]

AND I KNOW THAT MY BROTHER, ROB,

IS LOOKING DOWN FROM HEAVEN...

[Cheers and Applause]

I ALSO NEED TO ACKNOWLEDGE MY

OPPONENTS IN THIS RACE, TO

KATHLEEN WYNNE AND ANDREA

HORWATH...

>> BOO!

>> OH, NO, GUYS.

OH, NO, NO.

NO.

NO, NO.

>> BOO!

>> YOU FOUGHT -- YOU FOUGHT A

HARD, VERY HARD CAMPAIGN AND

I'LL TELL YOU THAT ONTARIO IS

BETTER FOR IT.

AND TONIGHT WE HAVE SENT A CLEAR

MESSAGE TO THE WORLD, ONTARIO IS

OPEN FOR BUSINESS.

[Cheers and Applause]

>> Andrew: OKAY, SO THE BOTTOM

LINE HERE, DOUG FORD IS IN.

NOW WHAT?

ROSIE HAS BEEN BUSY DELVING NOT

JUST INTO THAT QUESTION BUT, OF

COURSE, CO-HOSTING THE ELECTION

SPECIAL ALL NIGHT LONG.

ROSIE, WHAT DO YOU THINK?

WHAT IS DOUG FORD'S ONTARIO LOOK

LIKE?

>> Rosemary: I THINK THAT IT

LOOKS PRETTY DIFFERENT, AND

DRAMATICALLY DIFFERENT RIGHT

AWAY, ACTUALLY.

SOME OF THE THINGS THAT DOUG

FORD AND THE PROGRESSIVE

CONSERVATIVES REPRESENT, NO

SURPRISE, THEY WANT LESS

GOVERNMENT.

THEY WANT LESS GOVERNMENT IN

YOUR LIFE, INVOLVED IN YOUR

DECISIONS.

HOW DO THEY DO THAT?

THEY'LL TRY TO CUT PEOPLE'S

INCOME TAX.

THEY WANT TO GIVE YOUR MONEY

BACK TO YOU SO YOU CAN START

MAKING SOME DECISIONS.

ANOTHER BIG ONE, THE

CAP-AND-TRADE SYSTEM AND CARBON

TAXES AND HE DOESN'T THINK THAT

IS THE BEST WAY TO DEAL WITH

CARBON EMISSIONS.

SO HE'LL FIND HIS WAY OUT OF

THAT DEAL BETWEEN QUÉBEC AND

CALIFORNIA.

AND THERE'S OTHER THINGS, THAT

HE TALKED ABOUT DURING THE

CAMPAIGN THAT NO ONE UNDERSTANDS

HOW HE'LL DO, BUT HE WILL DO IT

HE SAYS.

CUT 10 CENTS OFF YOUR GAS PER

LITRE.

THAT SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT IDEA TO

ONTARIANS AND HOW DOES HE MAKE

THAT HAPPEN?

AND HE'LL SHAVE THINGS OUT OF

GOVERNMENT.

HE HAS PROMISED TO DO AN AUDIT

OF THE SPENDING IN ONTARIO AND

THAT INEVITABLY AND IN SPITE OF

WHAT HE'S SAID THROUGHOUT THE

CAMPAIGN MEANS THAT SOME THINGS

HAVE TO GO, WHETHER IT'S A

PUBLIC SERVANT, AND WHETHER IT'S

TEACHERS OR NURSES OR JUST PARTS

OF THE DEPARTMENT THAT YOU CAN'T

CUT OUT $6 BILLION OF ONTARIO'S

BUDGET AND NOT SEE SOME OF THOSE

THINGS FADE AWAY.

SO ONTARIO IS GOING TO LOOK A

LOT DIFFERENT, BUT, CLEARLY,

THAT'S WHAT ONTARIANS WANTED.

THEY WANTED SOMETHING THAT

LOOKED DIFFERENT THAN IN THE

PAST 15 YEARS.

>> Andrew: WHAT ABOUT THE REST

OF THE COUNTRY AND ESPECIALLY

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT?

I MEAN, THEY'RE LOSING A KNOWN

QUANTITY IN KATHLEEN WYNNE.

>> Rosemary: THEY ARE, SURE,

AN ALLY THAT THEY COULD COUNT ON

AND BRING TO THE TABLE AND TRY

TO GET OTHER PROVINCES RALLIED

AROUND THEM TO BUILD A

CONSENSUS.

THEY DON'T HAVE THAT ANYMORE.

WE SHOULDN'T MAKE TOO BIG A DEAL

OUT OF IT, AND THESE ARE

PROFESSIONAL PEOPLE, AND JUSTIN

TRUDEAU WILL KNOW HOW TO DEAL

WITH DOUG FORD AND DOUG FORD

WILL WANT THINGS FROM JUSTIN

TRUDEAU.

WE COULD SEE SHAKEUPS ACROSS THE

COUNTRY FOR ELECTIONS, LET'S

SAY, THAT JASON KENNEY GETS

ELECTED IN AN ALBERTA ELECTION

AND THEN WE HAVE A COUNTRY THAT

IS MORE DIFFICULT FOR THE PRIME

MINISTER TO MANAGE.

BUT AS YOU HAVE BEEN TALKING

ABOUT THE PRIME MINISTER IS

MANAGING OR TRYING AT ANY RATE

TO MANAGE DONALD TRUMP RIGHT

NOW.

CERTAINLY, HE CAN HANDLE DOUG

FORD.

THEY'LL HAVE TO COME TO SOME

SORT OF ACCEPTABLE RELATIONSHIP

AND FRIENDSHIP BECAUSE THEY'RE

GOING TO NEED ONE ANOTHER,

SOMETHING THAT I LIKE TO POINT

OUT IS THAT ONTARIO MAKES UP 40%

OF CANADA'S GROSS DOMESTIC

PRODUCT.

ONTARIO HAS TO WORK FOR REST OF

CANADA TO WORK.

>> Andrew: RIGHT.

AND TOMORROW YOU'LL BE BACK ON

THE PROGRAMME AND BREAKING IT

DOWN WITH "AT ISSUE" AND YOU'LL

HAVE A COUPLE THINGS.

>> Rosemary: ONE OR TWO THINGS

TO SAY.

MAYBE CARVE OUT 15 MINUTES FOR

ME.

>> Andrew: WE'LL SEE WHAT WE

CAN DO.

IN THE MEANTIME I WISH YOU

GOODNIGHT, AND I HOPE THAT YOU

CAN GET SOME SLEEP, ROSIE.

>> Rosemary: THANK YOU,

ANDREW.

>> Andrew: ONE LAST NOTE ON

TONIGHT'S RESULTS, A VICTORY FOR

THE GREEN, A SMALL ONE BUT A

VICTORY NONETHELESS.

>> I AM READY TO TAKE MY SEAT AT

QUEENS PARK.

[Cheers and Applause]

>> Andrew: THAT'S THE

BRAND-NEW M.P.P. MIKE SCHRINER

WINNING THE GREEN SEAT, THE

FIRST IN THE ONTARIO

LEGISLATURE.

AND THE MORAL HERE MAY VERY WELL

BE TRY, TRY AGAIN.

BECAUSE THIS IS SCHRINER'S THIRD

ATTEMPT AT A SEAT.

>>> NOW TO ANOTHER MAJOR

POLITICAL STORY PLAYING OUT

TONIGHT, THIS ONE IS IN QUÉBEC

CITY WHERE WE FIND IAN.

>> Ian: ANDREW, THE G7 SUMMIT

BEGINS TOMORROW, ABOUT TWO HOURS

OUTSIDE OF QUÉBEC CITY, BUT IT

IS HERE THAT THE PROTESTERS ARE

HOPING TO MAKE THEIR VOICES

HEARD.

>> [Speaking French]

>> Ian: THOSE PROTESTS BEGAN

WITH A MARCH TONIGHT THROUGH THE

DOWNTOWN AS THE G7 LEADERS BEGAN

ARRIVING.

THE SUMMIT HAS FIVE THEMES --

INVESTING IN GROWTH... PREPARING

FOR JOBS OF THE FUTURE... GENDER

EQUALITY... CLIMATE CHANGE...

AND BUILDING A MORE PEACEFUL AND

SECURE WORLD.

BUT THE ACTIONS EVE OF ONE G7 LEADER

IS ALREADY OVERSHADOWING THOSE

INTENTIONS.

NEW TWEETS TONIGHT FROM DONALD

TRUMP TAKING DIRECT AIM AT HIS

CANADIAN HOST.

WE HAVE EXTENSIVE COVERAGE ON

THE TENSIONS INSIDE OF THE

SUMMIT AND OUT ON THE STREETS.

PLUS, THE FOREIGN AFFAIRS

MINISTER ON WHAT CANADA HOPES TO

ACCOMPLISH.

FIRST THOUGH A LOOK AT THE KEY

LOCATIONS.

THE ACTION IS EXPECTED IN TWO

PLACES, AT THE SUMMIT ITSELF, IN

LA MABALBE, AND THICK WOODS ALL

AROUND AND THERE'S A SECURE

GREEN ZONE AND AN EVEN MORE

SECURE RED ZONE.

NEARLY FOUR KILOMETRES OF

FENCING AROUND THE LEADERS AT

THE FAIRMONT LE MANOIR

RICHELIEU.

AND THE MAJOR PROTESTERS ARE FOR

QUÉBEC CITY AND NOT AS EASY TO

SECURE GIVEN ITS SIZE AND

COMPLEXITY.

AND MARCHES AR MARCHERS ARE ENDING AT

POLITICAL VENUES LIKE THE U.S.

CONSULATE AND THE NATIONAL

ASSEMBLY.

AND TONIGHT'S PROTEST MARCH

WHICH WENT RIGHT BY THIS

BUILDING HAS BEEN PEACEFUL, BUT

AS JAELA BERNSTIEN REPORTS THERE

WERE SOME CLEAR SCEN SIGNS OF TROUBLE

AHEAD.

>> Reporter: ON THE EVE OF THE

G7 SUMMIT THIS MESSAGE ON QUÉBEC

CITY STREETS WAS CLEAR... AS

HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE MARCHED TO

THE DOWNTOWN CORE.

THIS WAS THE FIRST OF MANY

EXPECTED PROTESTS AND TENSION IS

HIGH.

BUT THOSE WHO CAME OUT TO

PROTEST PEAC PEACEFULLY CALLED OUT

POLICE FOR THEIR CONFRONTATIONAL

TACTICS.

>> I WAS WALKING DOWN TO HERE

AND THERE'S MUCH MORE POLICEMEN

THAN PEOPLE WHO ARE HERE TO --

IN STREETS TO -- TO PROTEST.

>> Reporter: AT LEAST TWO

PEOPLE WERE DETAINED AND SOME

PUSHED BACK AGAINST MEDIA.

WHILE SOME MASKED PROTESTERS

ADDED TENSION TO A POTENTIALLY

VIDEO VOLATILE SITUATION.

BUT FOR MOST IT WAS A FESTIVE

EVENING.

(*)

MORE THAN 50 DIFFERENT INTEREST

GROUPS WERE REPRESENTED ON THE

GROUND, BUT THEY ALL HAVE IN

COMMON IS THAT THEY'RE AGAINST

THE G7.

>> IT'S A JOKE.

>> Reporter: SOME ARE AGAINST

CAPITALISM OR WORRIED ABOUT

GENDER EQUALITY AND RACISM.

OTHERS BLAME G7 LEADERS FOR

FAVOURING OIL AND INDUSTRY OVER

THE ENVIRONMENT.

>> WE NEED TO START GETTING

SERIOUS ABOUT CLEANING THE

OCEANS.

>> THIS MEETING IS REALLY A

MEETING ORGANIZED BY THE 1%,

ONLY TO SERVE THE INTERESTS OF

THE 1%.

>> Reporter: THE DAY WAS A

TEST FOR WHAT'S TO COME.

WE HAVE MORE DAYS OF PROTESTS.

TOMORROW WE'RE SUPPOSED TO HAVE

PROTESTS LIKE THIS BUT ALL DAY

LONG.

IT'S BEING CALLED "THE DAY OF

DISRUPTION."

JAELA BERNSTIEN, CBC NEWS,

QUÉBEC CITY.

>> Ian: WHILE POLICE PREPARE FOR

MASS PROTESTS OUTSIDE OF THE

SUMMIT, INSIDE ANOTHER FACEOFF

IS EXPECTED.

SIX OF THE LEADERS AGAINST

DONALD TRUMP.

THE CBC'S DAVID COCHRANE HAS

BEEN LOOKING INTO THIS AND, YOU

KNOW, REALLY ALTHOUGH THERE'S A

LONG AGENDA HERE THERE'S ONE

ISSUE.

>> Reporter: YEAH, WHEN CANADA

BECAME THE CHAIR OF THE G7 THIS

YEAR AND THEY WANTED TO FOCUS ON

FIVE BROAD THEMES AND IT'S GOT

ONE NOW -- HOW TO DEAL WITH THE

U.S. IN THE AGE OF U.S.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP.

SO WE'LL HEAR A FAMILIAR MESSAGE

WHEN THE LEADERS START MEETING

TOMORROW AND THAT'S THE TRADE

WAR THAT TRUMP STARTED WITH THE

STEEL AND THE ALUMINUM TARIFFS,

IT'S AN UNACCEPTABLE TRADE WAR

THAT IS GOING TO HURT EVERYBODY,

THAT THE TAR ITCHES ARE

INSULTING AND UNACCEPTABLE.

WE GOT A TASTE WHEN PRIME

MINISTER TRUDEAU MET WITH

EMMANUEL MACRON.

IN THE CONFERENCE TRUDEAU MADE

IT CLEAR THAT HE'S NOT BACKING

DOWN AND THERE'S NO ATTEMPT TO

ESCALATE AND HE WON'T THREATEN

TO BURN DOWN THE WHITE HOUSE A

SECOND TIME.

THEY'LL CONTINUE WHAT CANADA

CALLS A POLITE BUT FIRM RESPONSE

TO TRUMP.

HERE'S WHAT TRUDEAU SAID

TODAY...

>> Prime Minister Justin

Trudeau: I CAN CERTAINLY SPEAK

PERSONALLY TO SAY THAT I HAVE

CONSISTENTLY STOOD UP FOR

CANADIAN INTERESTS, CONSISTENTLY

DEMONSTRATED WHERE WE DISAGREE,

BUT DONE SO IN A POLITE AND A

CORDIAL CONTEXT.

I THINK THAT'S WHAT CANADIANS

HAVE ALWAYS EXPECTED OF ME AND

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT WE'RE GOING

TO DO.

>> Reporter: SO PRESIDENT

DONALD TRUMP RESPONDED AND THIS

BEING DONALD TRUMP, THE RESPONSE

CAME ON TWITTER.

WE HAVE A COUPLE TWEETS TO SHOW

YOU.

THE FIRST... PLEASE TELL PRIME

MINISTER TRUDEAU AND PRESIDENT

MACRON THAT THEY ARE CHARGING

THE U.S. MASSIVE TARIFFS AND

CREATE NON-MONETARY BARRIERS.

E.U. TRADE SURPLUS WITH THE U.S.

IS $151 BILLION AND CANADA KEEPS

OUR FARMERS AND OTHERS OUT.

LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING THEM

TOMORROW, UNIRONICALLY.

AND ANOTHER AT PRIME MINISTER

TRUDEAU SAY, PRIME MINISTER

TRUDEAU IS BEING SO INDIGNANT,

BRINGING UP THE RELATIONSHIP

THAT THE U.S. AND CANADA HAD

OVER THE MANY YEARS AND ALL

SORTS OF OTHER THINGS BUT HE

DOESN'T BRING UP THE FACT THAT

THEY CHARGE US UP TO 300% ON

DAIRY HURTING OUR FARMERS AND

KILLING OUR AGRICULTURE.

HE'S COMING IN HOT WITH HIS

AMERICA FIRST AGENDA AND THE

OTHER MEMBERS ARE GOING TO TELL

HIM FIRST OFTEN MEANS AMERICA

ALONE.

>> Ian: WE HAVE ABOUT 30 SECONDS

HERE BUT WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR

THE G7?

>> Reporter: IT'S A CHALLENGE

AND THE SHORT-TERM CHALLENGE IS

AT RISK THIS WEEKEND.

AND YOU SEE A COMMUNIQUÉ WHERE

THEY ALL SIGN OFF AND A

STATEMENT OF GOALS AND

PRINCIPLES.

THERE'S TALKS THAT IS NOT GOING

TO HAPPEN AT THIS, THAT IT WOULD

BE A CHAIR SUMMARY FROM JUSTIN

TRUDEAU.

WE SAW THIS IN WHISTLER WITH THE

FINANCE MINISTERS AND THEY

REBUKED THE U.S.

SO THERE'S A SPLINTERING OF THE

G7 AND TOMORROW NIGHT WHEN THE

LEADERS SIT DOWN FOR SUPPER

THEY'RE ENTERTAINED BY THE

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL, IF THERE WAS

AN EVENT THAT NEEDED ACROBATS

AND COTORTIONISTS TO MAKE IT

WORK, IT'S THIS ONE.

>> Ian: THANK YOU, DAVID.

THE PRIME MINISTER SAID THAT

CANADA IS READY FOR AN

ESCALATING TRADE BATTLE WITH ITS

SOUTHERN NEIGHBOUR.

JUSTIN TRUDEAU'S POINT PERSON ON

THE CANADA-U.S. FILE IS THE

FOREIGN AFFAIRS MINISTER

CHRYSTIA FREELAND AND I SAT DOWN

WITH HER EARLIER TODAY... WHAT

IS GOING ON NOW BEHIND THE

SCENES, PARTICULARLY WITH YOUR

EUROPEAN ALLIES TO TRY TO FIGURE

OUT HOW TO DEAL WITH PRESIDENT

TRUMP?

>> The Hon. Chyrstia Freeland:

WELL, YOU ARE RIGHT, IAN.

A LOT IS GOING ON.

AND A LOT HAS BEEN GOING ON.

AND I GUESS THAT MAYBE THAT'S

THE IMPORTANT PLACE TO START IS

I THINK THAT CANADIANS ARE VERY

AWARE OF HOW HARD WE HAVE BEEN

WORKING WITH THE U.S. AND WITH A

BROAD RANGE OF AMERICAN COUNTER

PARTIES, NOT JUST THE

ADMINISTRATION BUT ALSO

LEGISLATORS, GOVERNORS,

BUSINESS, UNION, MAYORS, YOU

KNOW, THE WHOLE COUNTRY HAS BEEN

BLANKETED BY TEAM CANADA.

>> Ian: AND DO YOU HAVE FURTHER

TARIFFS THAT MIGHT BE IMPOSED,

YOU KNOW, THAT ARE PREPARED IF

THE UNITED STATES DECIDES TO

KIND OF RAISE THE ANTE HERE AS

WELL?

>> The Hon. Chyrstia Freeland:

WELL, LET ME START BY SAYING

THAT THE HAPPY ENDING TO THIS

STORY IS THESE ILLEGAL TARIFFS

ARE REMOVED BY THE UNITED

STATES.

THAT'S THE OUTCOME THAT WE WANT

TO GET TO.

THAT IS THE GOOD OUTCOME FOR THE

UNITED STATES, FOR THE WORLD,

INCLUDING FOR CANADA.

>> Ian: SO THAT WOULD BE THE

OUTCOME THAT YOU WOULD HOPE FOR?

>> The Hon. Chyrstia Freeland:

THE OUTCOME THAT WE WANT IS THEY

TAKE AWAY THE ILLEGAL TARIFFS ON

CANADIAN STEEL AND ALUMINUM.

SO THAT'S WHAT WE'RE DRIVING

TOWARDS.

>> Ian: AS WE SIT HERE RIGHT NOW

HOW LIKELY IS THAT TO HAPPEN AND

WHEN?

>> The Hon. Chyrstia Freeland:

YOU KNOW, IAN, ONE OF THE THINGS

THAT I SAID AT THE BEGINNING OF

THE NAFTA NEGOTIATION IS THAT

THERE'S A LOT OF DRAMA AND WE

SHOULD EXPECT A LOT OF UPS AND

DOWNS.

AND THAT IS AS FAR AS I GO IN

MAKING PREDICTIONS.

>> Ian: IS THERE ANY SPECIFIC

STRATEGY TO DEAL WITH THE

PRESIDENT?

>> The Hon. Chyrstia Freeland:

YES, WE HAVE A LOT OF STRATEGIES

TO DEAL WITH THE PRESIDENT.

AND I THINK THAT ONE THING THAT

I THINK THAT CANADIANS HAVE

ACTUALLY BEEN ABLE TO SEE IS HOW

ABLE THE PRIME MINISTER IS TO

FIND A CONNECTION -- I THINK

THAT WITH EVERYONE.

I MEAN, I THINK THAT IT'S A VERY

POWERFUL TALENT HE HAS.

WE EXPERIENCE IT AS CANADIANS,

IT'S ONE OF HIS GREAT SKILLS AS

A POLITICIAN.

I SEE IT ON THE INTERNATIONAL

STAGE.

HE'S VERY GOOD AT TALKING TO

ANYONE AND AT FORMING THAT

CONNECTION.

AND HE DOES HAVE A REALLY GOOD

RELATIONSHIP WITH THE PRESIDENT.

I HAVE SEEN IT FACE-TO-FACE IN

THE BILATERAL MEETINGS THAT I

HAVE ATTENDED AND A LOT OF

SENIOR FIGURES IN THE

ADMINISTRATION HAVE SAID TO ME,

YOU KNOW WHAT, THE PRESIDENT, HE

REALLY LIKES THE PRIME MINISTER.

NOW THAT RELATIONSHIP -- THAT'S

NOT EVERYTHING, RIGHT?

AND WE'VE SEEN THAT YOU CAN HAVE

THAT GOOD RELATIONSHIP AND STILL

HAVE SHARP DISAGREEMENTS ABOUT

POLICY.

BUT IT'S CERTAINLY HELPFUL FOR

US AS CANADIANS THAT OUR PRIME

MINISTER IS ABLE TO TALK TO THE

PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

>> Ian: WHAT DO YOU THINK THAT

THE CHANCES ARE OF MEANINGFUL

SUCCESS HERE AT THE G7 GIVEN

WHAT'S HAPPENED IN THE LAST FEW

DAYS WITH THE PRESIDENT,

PARTICULARLY ON TARIFFS?

>> The Hon. Chyrstia Freeland:

I THINK THAT FOR ME THE WAY THAT

I DEFINE SUCCESS AT THE G7 IS

THAT WE HAVE THE IMPORTANT

CONVERSATIONS.

I THINK THAT IT IS IMPORTANT,

YOU KNOW, AS CANADIANS THAT WE

ARE VERY FOCUSED ON THE ECONOMIC

RELATIONSHIP WITH THE UNITED

STATES AND THIS ILLEGAL

IMPOSITION OF TARIFFS BY THE

U.S. LAST THURSDAY IS NATURALLY

A CORE CONCERN.

IT OUGHT TO BE.

AND THAT WILL BE AN ISSUE HERE.

IT'S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT

THERE ARE MANY, MANY OTHER

ISSUES IN THE WORLD.

AND THERE WILL BE A LOT OF OTHER

ISSUES DISCUSSED.

>> Ian: THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

>> The Hon. Chyrstia Freeland:

MY PLEASURE.

GREAT TO TALK TO YOU.

>> Ian: MORE SPECIAL COVERAGE

AHEAD FROM QUÉBEC CITY.

IT IS CLEAR TONIGHT THAT THE

DYNAMICS OF THIS SUMMIT ARE

UNLIKE ANY OTHER IN RECENT

MEMORY.

>> THIS IS GOING TO BE THE MOST

DYSFUNCTIONAL G7 SUMMIT SINCE IT

WAS FOUNDED IN 1975.

THIS IS GOING TO A PROFOUND --

CAN I SAY SHIT SHOW -- OF AN

INTERNATIONAL MEETING.

>> Ian: SO WITH THAT IN MIND

WE'LL GET A CANADIAN PERSPECTIVE

FROM TWO PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN

INSIDE OF THE G7 AND G8

MEETINGS, THE FORMER PRIME

MINISTER PAUL MARTIN AND THE

FORMER FOREIGN AFFAIRS MINISTER

JOHN BAIRD.

OUR CONVERSATIONS ARE STILL TO

COME ON "THE NATIONAL."

>> Andrew: NOW THE G7 SUMMIT

IS JUST, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, ONE

SMALL PIECE OF DONALD TRUMP'S

IMMEDIATE SCHEDULE.

TODAY HE WRAPPED A MEETING WITH

JAPANESE PRIME MINISTER SHINZO

ABE.

AND WHILE THE G7 IS THE NEXT

THING ON TRUMP'S AGENDA HE ALSO

HAD SOMETHING ELSE ON HIS MIND.

HIS UPCOMING FACE-TO-FACE

MEETING WITH THE NORTH KOREAN

LEADER KIM JONG-un.

IT'S SCHEDULED FOR NEXT WEEK AND

TRUMP IS DROPPING HINTS ABOUT

HOW HE THINKS THAT COULD UNFOLD.

THE CBC'S PAUL HUNTER HAS THAT

STORY FROM WASHINGTON.

>> Reporter: DAYS AWAY FROM

PERHAPS MAKING HISTORY AND SAID

DONALD TRUMP TODAY AMID MEETINGS

WITH JAPAN'S SHINZO ABE, HE'S

GOOD TO GO.

>> President Donald Trump: I

THINK THAT I'M VERY WELL

PREPARED.

I DON'T THINK THAT I HAVE TO

PREPARE VERY MUCH.

IT'S ABOUT ATTITUDE, AND IT'S

ABOUT WILLINGNESS TO GET THINGS

DONE.

THIS ISN'T A QUESTION OF

PREPARATION, IT'S A QUESTION OF

WHETHER OR NOT PEOPLE WANT IT TO

HAPPEN.

>> Reporter: BY THAT HE MEANS

NORTH KOREAN LEADER KIM

JONG-un, INTERNATIONAL PARIAH

AND ODDBALL COMMANDER OF

FEARSOME WEAPONRY.

HE AND TRUMP WILL SHAKE HANDS

AND SIT DOWN AT THIS RESORT IN

SINGAPORE NEXT WEEK WITH A LONG

LIST OF MEGA-ISSUES IN PLAY.

AMONG THEM -- NORMALIZING

RELATIONS WITH THE U.S. AND

OFFICIALLY ENDING THE DECADES

OLD KOREAN WAR.

>> President Donald Trump: WE

COULD SIGN AN AGREEMENT, AS YOU

KNOW THAT WOULD BE A FIRST STEP.

IT'S WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE

AGREEMENT THAT IS REALLY THE BIG

POINT.

>> Reporter: BIG POINT

TRUMP -- DE-NUCLEARIZATION AND

GETTING RID OF ITS NUKES

PERMANENTLY.

IT'S TRUMP'S BOTTOM LINE FOR THE

SUMMIT.

AND IF THINGS SEEM TO BE NOT

HEADED THAT WAY...

>> President Donald Trump: ALL

I CAN SAY IS THAT I'M TOTALLY

PREPARED TO AWK WALK AWAY.

I DID IT ONCE BEFORE.

YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO WALK

AWAY.

>> Reporter: BUT TRUMP SAYS

THAT HE EXPECTS IT TO BE

FRUITFUL, AT WORSE, MAYBE

LEADING TO MORE MEETINGS.

HOW TO TELL HOW IT'S GOING?

SAID TRUMP, TAKE NOTE OF HIS

LANGUAGE.

LATELY HE STOPPED USING THE TERM

"MAXIMUM PRESSURE" IN

REFERENCING U.S. SANCTIONS ON

NORTH KOREA.

>> President Donald Trump: WE

DON'T USE THE TERM ANYMORE

BECAUSE WE'RE GOING INTO A

FRIENDLY NEGOTIATION.

>> Reporter: BUT IF THAT

CHANGES...

>> President Donald Trump: IF

YOU HEAR ME SAYING WE'RE GOING

TO USE "MAXIMUM PRESSURE,"

YOU'LL KNOW THAT THE NEGOTIATION

DID NOT DO WELL, FRANKLY.

>> Reporter: SO WHAT'S GOING

TO HAPPEN?

IS TRUMP READY?

IS KIM BLUFFING?

AS TRUMP HIMSELF MIGHT PUT IT,

WE'LL SEE.

PAUL HUNTER, CBC NEWS,

WASHINGTON.

>> Andrew: SO THE SUMMIT

HAPPENS ON TUESDAY IN SINGAPORE,

BUT REMEMBER THAT IS LOCAL TIME.

SO HERE IN CANADA EXPECT TO HEAR

ALL ABOUT IT ON MONDAY NIGHT.

AND WE'LL HAVE SPECIAL COVERAGE

FROM ON THE GROUND AS THE TWO

SIDES MEET.

>>> MEANTIME, LOTS MORE AHEAD ON

TONIGHT'S SHOW... THERE'S A

CRUCIAL VOTE IN THE SENATE ON

LEGALIZING MARIJUANA IN THIS

COUNTRY.

>>> AND LATER, VLADIMIR PUTIN

TOOK SOME CALLS TODAY DIRECTLY

FROM HIS PEOPLE AND CANADA CAME

UP.

WE'LL TELL YOU WHY.

>>> PLUS, A HISTORIC RESORT IN

NOVA SCOTIA REDUCED TO RUBBLE.

>> WE'RE ON THE ROADSIDE

WATCHING AND I GUESS THAT WITHIN

THE HOUR THE BUILDING WAS

ENGULFED.

WE WATCHED OUR ROOM THAT WE WERE

IN JUST COLLAPSE TO THE GROUND.

IT WAS IN ASHES

>> Andrew: TONIGHT ON "THE

NATIONAL," A GRIM DAY IN

GUATEMALA AS OFFICIALS ADMIT

THAT THEY WERE TOO SLOW TO WARN

PEOPLE ABOUT SUNDAY'S VOLCANIC

ERUPTION.

THAT BY THE TIME THAT AN

EVACUATION ALERT WAS ISSUED IT

WAS TOO LATE FOR MANY OF THOSE

PEOPLE WHO LIVE ON THE SLOPES OF

THE VOLCANO.

109 PEOPLE ARE NOW CONFIRMED

DEAD.

HOPE IS DIMMING FOR THE NEARLY

200 PEOPLE MISSING.

AND ONCE AGAIN THE SEARCH CREWS

HAD TO STOP THEIR WORK TODAY

BECAUSE OF DANGEROUS CONDITIONS.

>>> SO THAT OTHER VOLCANO THAT

WE HAVE BEEN TRACKING ON

HAWAII'S BIG ISLAND.

TONIGHT THE OFFICIALS RELEASED

NEW DETAILS ON THE DAMAGE CAUSED

SINCE KILAUEA BEGAN ERUPTING

NEARLY 600 HOMES HAVE BEEN

DESTROYED, MANY OF THOSE WIPED

OUT JUST A COUPLE DAYS AGO BY A

SLOW-MOVING BUT UNSTOPPABLE

RIVER OF LAVA.

[Cheers and Applause]

>> Andrew: AND VICTORY, THE

WASHINGTON CAPITALS HAVE BEEN

DREAMING ABOUT.

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FRANCHISE

HISTORY THEY HAVE WON THE

STANLEY CUP BEATING THE VEGAS

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 4-3 IN GAME FIVE.

AND THE MAN WHO LED THEM TO THE

TOP, CAPTAIN ALEXANDER OVECHKIN

WAS NAMED THE MOST VALUABLE

PLAYER OF THE STANLEY CUP

PLAYOFFS.

IT WAS A RECORD FOR THE CAPITALS

WITH HIS KNOLLS.

>>> AFTER SIX MONTHS OF INTENSE

DEBATE TONIGHT THE SENATORS

VOTED ON THE LIBERAL

GOVERNMENT'S LANDMARK BILL TO

LEGALIZE RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA.

CATHERINE CULLEN IS FOLLOWING

THE LATE-NIGHT VOTE CLOSELY ON

PARLIAMENT HILL AND IS JOINING

US FROM OUTSIDE OF THE SENATE

CHAMBERS.

SO, CATHERINE, LET'S START WITH

THE RESULTS.

>> Reporter: ANDREW, THERE WAS

SO MUCH SCRUTINY AROUND THIS

VOTE AND A SENSE OF DRAMA THAT

HAD BUILT UP.

IN THE END IT WASN'T CLOSE, 56

IN FAVOUR OF THE CANNIBAS ACT

AND 30 SENATORS OPPOSED.

ONE SENATOR WHO ABSTAINED.

THAT IS WITH ALL OF THE CHANGES

THAT THE SENATE WANTS TO SEE TO

THIS PIECE OF LEGISLATION, 46

CHANGES IN FACT WHICH BY

PARLIAMENTARY STANDARDS IS A

PRETTY DARNED BIG NUMBER.

NOW THE HOUSE WILL COMMONS WILL

HAVE TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE

LEGISLATION WITH ALL OF THE

CHANGES AND DECIDE WHAT TO DO

ABOUT IT.

JUST BECAUSE THERE WAS A BIG

MARGIN TONIGHT YOU SHOULDN'T

THINK THAT THE PASSIONS AROUND

THIS ISSUE HAVE NECESSARILY

CALMED.

LISTEN TO A BIT OF WHAT SOME

SENATOR HIS TO SAY AFTER THE

VOTE...

>> WE KNOW THAT PROHIBITION

DOESN'T WORK.

I THINK THAT IS A BRAVE MOVE ON

THE PART OF THE GOVERNMENT,

FRANKLY, TO TAKE ON A TOUGH AND

AN OBVIOUSLY CONTROVERSIAL

ISSUE.

I'M VERY PLEASED WITH THE

STRENGTH OF THIS EVENING'S

POSITIVE VOTE.

>> I'M VERY CONCERNED WHAT WE

HAVE SEEN HERE FROM THE

GOVERNMENT SENATORS IS THAT

THERE'S AN ATTEMPT TO NORMALIZE

MARIJUANA AND, UNFORTUNATELY,

THIS BILL MAKES MARIJUANA MORE

ACCESSIBLE TO TEENAGERS,

PARTICULARLY THAN EVER BEFORE,

AND IT'S VERY CONCERNING.

>> Andrew: SO IF WE TAKE STOCK

OF WHAT'S HAPPENED, I MEAN, A

CLEAR WIN FOR THE BILL AND A BIG

STEP FORWARD FOR LEGALIZATION.

BUT AS YOU ALLOWEDDED TO THE

PASSION AROUND THIS, IS NOT OVER

YET, NOT BY A LONGSNOT.

>> Reporter: THAT'S RIGHT.

THE HOUSE OF COMMONS HAS TO

CONSIDER THE CHANGES THAT I

TALKED ABOUT AND SOME ARE

TECHNICAL BUT SOME MORE

SUBSTANTIVE, WHETHER OR NOT, FOR

INSTANCE, THAT PROVINCES SHOULD

BE CLEAR THAT THEY HAVE THE

RIGHT TO BAN HOMEGROWN

MARIJUANA.

BECAUSE THE FEDERAL LEGISLATION

SAYS THAT PEOPLE CAN GROW IT AT

HOME, UP TO FOUR PLANTS PER

HOUSEHOLD.

SO QUESTIONS HOW THE FEDERAL

GOVERNMENT WILL DEAL WITH THAT.

AND THERE'S A PROPOSAL FROM THE

SENATE TO BAN GRANDED

MERCHANDISE, LIKE T-SHIRTS WITH

MARIJUANA LOGO ON IT.

AND SO THE GOVERNMENT, THE HOUSE

OF COMMONS, WILL HAVE TO DECIDE

HOW TO DEAL WITH THAT.

AND THE LEGISLATION IS GOING TO

COME BACK OVER HERE AND EVEN IF

IT PASSES IN THE SENATE WE STILL

DON'T KNOW WHEN LEGALIZATION

WILL TAKE PLACE.

JUSTIN TRUDEAU SAID THAT IT WILL

BE SOME TIME THIS SUMMER BUT THE

GOVERNMENT WANTS A BUFFER ZONE,

AND SO THEY'LL HAVE TO DECIDE

EXACTLY WHAT DATE TO PUSH THAT

BUTTON ON LEGALIZATION.

ANDREW?

>> Andrew: STILL A FEW STEPS

TO GO.

CATHERINE CULLEN OUTSIDE OF THE

SENATE TONIGHT.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

>> Ian: MORE COVERAGE TONIGHT

FROM QUÉBEC CITY, INCLUDING

INSIGHT FROM CANADIANS WHO HAVE

BEEN INSIDE OF THOSE G7

MEETINGS.

>> WELL, IT IS PROBABLY THE

WORLD'S MOST EXCLUSIVE

MINI-CONVENTION.

THERE'S A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES

FOR NETWORKING AND MEETINGS ON

THE SIDE THAT PERHAPS DON'T GET

MUCH ATTENTION OR PERHAPS ARE AS

IMPORTANT TO THE

>> Ian: OH, HOW THE MIGHTY ARE

MOCKED.

WHEN SEVEN OF THE WORLD'S MOST

POWERFUL LEADERS GATHER IN ONE

PLACE ALL SORTS OF GROUPS TRY TO

GET GLOBAL ATTENTION.

THIS PUPPET SHOW BY OXZ FAM IS OXFAM IS TO

DRAW ATTENTION TO WOMEN'S

ISSUES.

LET'S LOOK AT HOW THE MEMBERSHIP

TO THIS ELITE CLUB HAS CHANGED

OVER THE YEARS... THE FIRST

MEETING OF BIG PLAYERS WAS IN

1975.

CREATED TO DEAL WITH AN OIL

CRISIS AND TURMOIL IN THE WORLD

ECONOMY.

ONLY SIX MEMBERS THEN.

THE U.S., THE U.K., FRANCE,

ITALY, GERMANY AND JAPAN.

A YEAR LATER THE U.S. PRESIDENT

GERALD FORD INVITED CANADA TO

JOIN.

IT BECAME THE G7.

IN 1998, IT BECAME THE G8 WHEN

RUSSIA JOINED BUT RUSSIA WAS

SUSPENDED IN 2014 AFTER IT

ANNEXED CRIMEA.

SO THIS YEAR AS WE HAVE BEEN

SAYING SOME ARE WONDERING IF

THIS REALLY THE G6 PLUS ONE.

THE SHADOW LOOMING OVER THE

SUMMIT IS THAT THE MOST POWERFUL

LEADER IS ALSO THE MOST

UNPREDICTABLE.

THEY ARE REFERRED TO AS FAMILY

PHOTOS, A SYMBOL OF THE CLOSE

RELATIONSHIP AMONG THE LEADERS

AND THEIR COUNTRIES, BUT MANY

ARE WONDERING WHAT IT WILL LOOK

LIKE WHEN OLD FRIENDS ARE

NURSING NEW GRIEV NEW GRIEVE APSES.

THE TOP DIPLOMAT TO CANADA...

>> THE UNITED STATES AND THE

UNITED KINGDOM, LIKE CANADA AND

THE UNITED STATES, ARE CLOSE

PARTNERS.

AND YOU DON'T EXPECT YOUR CLOSE

PARTNERS TO DO SOMETHING AS

UNACCEPTABLE AS THIS.

AND FREE TRADE IS VERY, VERY

IMPORTANT TO US.

AND IT WILL BECOME MORE

IMPORTANT TO US AS WE LEAVE THE

EUROPEAN UNION.

>> Ian: WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE

THIS YEAR'S G7?

AN AUTHOR AND A FOREIGN POLICY

ANALYST AND A PROFESSOR FROM NEW

YORK CITY...

>> THIS IS GOING TO BE THE MOST

DYSFUNCTIONAL G7 SUMMIT SINCE IT

WAS FOUNDED IN 1975 AND IT'S NOT

EVEN CLOSE.

THIS IS GOING TO BE A

PROFOUND -- CAN I SAY SHIT SHOW

-- OF AN INTERNATIONAL MEETING?

>> President Donald Trump:

THEY'RE OUR ALLIES BUT THEY TAKE

ADVANTAGE OF US...

>> Ian: TRUMP'S DISRUPTION OF

THE TRADITIONAL WORLD ORDER GOES

BEYOND TARIFFS.

THE U.S. PULLED OUT OF THE

TRANSPACIFIC TRADE PARTNERSHIP

AND THE IRAN DEAL AS WELL AS

DITCHING THE PARIS CLIMATE

ACCORD.

LEAVING BEHIND THEIR G7 PEERS.

>> WE HAVE LIVED FOR DECADES NOW

IN A AMERICANA AND IT'S BEEN A

U.S.-LED WESTERN ARCHITECTURE.

THE BRITAIN WOODS INSTITUTIONS

AND THE WORLD BANK AND THE

I.M.F. AND THE W.T.O. AND THE G7

AND THE G20 AND THE UNITED

NATIONS, THAT'S THE WAY THAT THE

WORLD ORDER HAS RUN.

AND THAT ORDER IS IN ENORMOUS

THREAT RIGHT NOW.

THERE IS A LEVEL OF CREATIVE

DESTRUCTION OF OUR GEOPOLITICAL

ORDER THAT NO ONE IS FILLING.

THE CHINESE ARE BUILDING SOME

ALTERNATIVE ARCHITECTURE BUT

AMERICA FIRST IS RUNNING AWAY

FROM IT.

AND THAT IS GOING TO BE IN VERY

CLEAR EVIDENCE IN CANADA THIS

WEEK.

>> Ian: TO GET A CANADIAN VIEW

WE TURNED TO SOME PEOPLE WHO

HAVE BEEN INSIDE OF THOSE G7

MEETING ROOMS.

I JAMES BAIRD, WHO WAS STEPHEN

HARPER'S FOREIGN AFFAIRS

MINISTER.

THERE'S SOME SUGGESTION THAT

ACHIEVING ANY KIND OF MEANINGFUL

CONSENSUS OUT OF THIS MEETING IS

VERY UNLIKELY AND PRIMARILY

BECAUSE OF TRUMP.

WHAT'S YOUR VIEW ON THAT?

>> I THINK THAT ALL SEVEN OR

EIGHT COUNTRIES GOT TOGETHER AND

AGREED ON EVERYTHING YOU

WOULDN'T NEED TO HAVE A MEETING.

WHENEVER THE UNITED STATES IS

AROUND THE TABLE, OBVIOUSLY,

EVERYONE IS A SECOND OR THIRD

TIER PLAYER, THE SIZE OF THEIR

ECONOMY AND THE POPULATION AND

THE ONLY GLOBAL SUPERPOWER.

THAT'S A HUGE DYNAMIC.

BUT CANADA PLAYS A BIG ROLE.

YOU KNOW, WE ARE IN THE G7, WE

ASSUME WE ARE NUMBER SEVEN.

WE HAVE THE WORLD'S THIRD

LARGEST GLOBAL ECONOMY.

BUT THE UNITED KINGDOM FELL TO

NUMBER SIX IN TERMS OF GLOBAL

ECONOMY AND INDIA'S ECONOMY

PASSED IT.

AND NOW WITH THE RISE OF

CHINA -- I MEAN, CANADA'S

ECONOMY WAS BIGGER THAN CHINA'S

25 YEARS AGO SO THE WORLD IS

BECOMING MORE COMPLEX AND MORE

DIFFICULT TO STEER IN THE RIGHT

WAY.

>> Ian: STILL, DRAWING ON HIS

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE BAIRD SAYS

DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE VALUE OF

ONE-ON-ONE MEETINGS.

>> WELL, IT IS PROBABLY THE

WORLD'S MOST EXCLUSIVE

MINI-CONVENTION.

THERE'S A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES

FOR NETWORKING, MEETINGS ON THE

SIDE.

PERHAPS THEY DON'T GET AS MUCH

ATTENTION OR AS IMPORTANT TO THE

FORMAL AGENDA.

>> I THINK WE'RE GOING INTO THIS

G7 MEETING IN A VERY DIFFERENT

SET OF PARAMETERS THAN WHAT HAS

HAPPENED HISTORICALLY SINCE THE

END OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR.

>> Ian: FORMER PRIME MINISTER

PAUL MARTIN WAS SPEAKING TO G7

FINANCE MINISTERS.

>> WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO

BASICALLY ASSERT THE OPTIMISM,

THE GLOBALIZATION THAT IT IS A

GOOD THING AND IT CAN BE MADE TO

WORK.

>> Ian: LIKE BAIRD, MARTIN IS

OPTIMISTIC THAT THERE WILL BE

SOME MEANINGFUL AGREEMENT AT THE

G7 REACHED BEHIND CLOSED DOORS.

>> THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF

ANY G7 MEETING IS THE DINNER.

AND I HAVE FOUND THAT THOSE

DINNERS ARE WHERE MORE IS

ACCOMPLISHED AND EFFECTIVELY

YOU'RE ABLE TO TALK TO THE OTHER

PERSON AND LOOK HIM OR HER IN

THE EYE AND SAY, LOOK, YOU KNOW,

YOU'RE NOT WHERE WE ARE AND

YOU'RE NOT GOING TO SUCCEED.

AND BASICALLY THE ANSWERS COME

BACK AND FORTH.

AND I HAVE GREAT HOPES

FUNDAMENTALLY FOR THAT PRIVATE

DINNER.

>> Ian: BUT FOR ALL OF THEIR

EXPERIENCE AT THESE SUMMITS KEEP

IN MIND THAT NEITHER MARTIN NOR

BAIRD HAVE EVER DEALT WITH A

U.S. PRESIDENT LIKE DONALD

TRUMP.

A PRESIDENT WHO HAS TURNED

UNPREDICTABILITY INTO A

POLITICAL DOCTRINE.

JUSTIN TRUDEAU'S GREEN

CREDENTIALS MAY BE ON THE LINE

AT THIS SUMMIT, ESPECIALLY AFTER

HIS GOVERNMENT BOUGHT THE KINDER

MORGAN PIPELINE.

HIS GOALS HERE INCLUDE LEAVING

THE G7 TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF

THE OCEANS BY REDUCING PLASTIC

POLLUTION.

THE MOVEMENT AGAINST DISPOSAL

PLASTIC GAINED MOMENTUM LAST

MONTH IN VANCOUVER.

THE CITY WILL BAN PLASTIC STRAWS

STARTING NEXT YEAR.

SO WILL SCOTLAND.

THE REST OF THE U.K. MAY FOLLOW

SUIT AS IT STUDIES A BAN ON

STRAWS, COTTON SWABS AND STIR

STICKS.

BUT ONE CALIFORNIA CITY SAW NO

NEED TO WAIT.

MALIBU, THE HOME OF MOVIE STARS

AND THAT GORGEOUS BEACH, HAS

TAKEN A HARD STAND AGAINST

DISPOSABLE PLASTIC.

KIM BRUNHUBER SHOWS US WHY.

>> Reporter: ON THE BEACH IN

MALIBU, A GROUP OF YOUNG

TOURISTS FROM ARGENTINA HAVE NO

IDEA.

STARTING THIS MONTH WHAT'S IN

THEIR DRINKS IS ILLEGAL.

NOT THE SODA -- THE STRAWS.

DO YOU KNOW THAT HERE IN MALIBU

PLASTIC STRAWS ARE BANNED?

>> NO, I MEAN, IT IS?

>> IT'S SO COMMON TO USE THEM.

>> Reporter: THEY ARE AS

UBIQUITOUS AS SEAWEED.

ALMOST ANYWHERE THAT YOU LOOK ON

THE COAST, BOBBING IN THE SURF

LIKE THE MASTS OF TOY SAILBOATS

ARE THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF

PLASTIC STRAWS.

ONE STUDY ESTIMATES THAT THE

OCEANS HAVE 270,000 METRIC

TONNES OF PLASTIC.

7% OF THAT PLASTIC, ACCORDING TO

ANOTHER STUDY, IS MADE UP BY

STRAWS AND STIR STICKS.

>> EVERY TIME THAT I GO TO THE

BEACH I HAVE NOTICED TONNES OF

PLASTIC AND AMONG THAT PLASTIC

THERE WAS ALMOST ALWAYS 50%

STRAWS.

>> Reporter: MORA VATTY IS FED

UP WITH ALL OF THE STRAWS

WASHING UP ON THE BEACH.

>> THEY END UP IN OUR WATERWAYS

AND IN SEA LIFE AND THEY END UP

BACK IN US.

>> Reporter: SO LAST YEAR SHE

STARTED LOBBYING THE LAWMAKERS

TO BAN THEM AND IT WORKED.

RIGHT NOW ALL OF THESE ARE

BANNED IN THE CITY OF MALIBU?

>> THE WHOLE BOTTOM AREA IS

BANNED IN OUR CITY.

TO BE REPLACED WITH ALL OF THE

STUFF THAT YOU SEE AT THE TOP OF

THIS.

>> Reporter: MALIBU'S BAN,

AMONG THE FIRST AND THE MOST

STRINGENT SO FAR, COVERS NOT

JUST STRAWS BUT OTHER DISPOSABLE

PLASTICS LIKE CUTLERY.

IT'S SIMILAR TO A PROPOSAL BY

THE EUROPEAN UNION COMMISSION TO

LIMIT SINGLE-USE PLASTICS WHICH

THE COMMISSION CLAIMS MAKES UP

70% OF THE EUROPEAN BEACH LITTER

BUT IN MALIBU SOME BALK AT THE

COST OF REPLACING THAT PLASTIC.

>> IT'S GOING TO BE EXPENSIVE

AND IT HAS HUGE PRICES AND WE

DON'T WANT TO DO THAT BUT WE

HAVE TO.

>> IT'S SUSTAINABLE.

>> Reporter: HE INSISTS THAT

THE ECOFRIENDLY ALTERNATIVE

PRICES EXACTLY DOWN AND MALIBU'S

TRENDY STATUS, HE SAYS, MAKES IT

AN ENVIRONMENTAL INFLUENCER.

>> WITH 13,000 RESIDENTS WE'RE

NOT POLLUTING THAT MUCH BUT WITH

15 MILLION VISITORS TO OUR CITY

EVERY YEAR WE CAN EDUCATE THE

VISITORS AND THEY HOPEFULLY TAKE

THAT INFORMATION AND DISSEMINATE

IN OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD.

>> Reporter: HOLLYWOOD

EMBRACED THE CAUSE.

>> SUCK, SUCK, SUCK.

>> Reporter: WITH EFFORTS LIKE

THIS ONLINE CAMPAIGN.

>> BY 2050 THERE'S MORE PLASTIC

IN THE OCEAN THAN FISH.

>> Reporter: IN RECENT MONTHS

SEVERAL BIG CITIES LIKE NEW YORK

AND MAJOR NATIONAL CHAINS HAVE

PROPOSED OR ADOPTED THEIR OWN

BANS.

THE ASSOCIATIONS THAT REPRESENT

CALIFORNIAN AND CANADIAN PLASTIC

MERCHANDISMANUFACTURERS SAID THEY OPPOSE

THESE BANS DID YO BUT DECLINED AN

INTERVIEW.

AS FOR THE YOUNG LAW BREAKERS --

>> WE CAN USE MORE PLASTIC, WHY

ISN'T.

>> Reporter: SOMETHING THAT HE

HAD NEVER EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT

BEFORE, HE SAYS, IS NOW HARD TO

UNTHINK.

KIM BRU BRUNHUBER, CBC NEWS, MALIBU,

CALIFORNIA.

>> Ian: TODAY IKEA JOINED THE

CRUSADE TO CUT BACK ON PLASTIC

WASTE.

THE SWEDISH RETAIL GIANT IS

COMMITTING TO STOP SELLING

SINGLE-USE PLASTICWARE LIKE

CUTLERY AND STRAWS BY 2020.

IT SAYS THAT ITS GLOBAL REACH

COULD HELP TO INSPIRE MORE THAN

A BILLION CUSTOMERS, BUT THE

SHEER SIZE CAN ALSO LIMIT A

CORPORATION.

JUST DAYS AGO MCDONALD'S C.E.O.

SAID THAT THERE'S NO REPLACEMENT

FOR PLASTIC STRAWS ON THE VAST

SCALE REQUIRED.

WITH 60 MILLION CUSTOMERS A DAY

THE DEMAND IS SIMPLY TOO GREAT.

THAT'S IT FOR US TONIGHT FROM

QUÉBEC CITY AND WE'LL BE BACK

HERE TOMORROW NIGHT AS THE

SUMMIT OFFICIALLY BEGINS AND

UNTIL THEN LET'S GO BACK TO

ANDREW IN VANCOUVER.

>> Andrew: WE STILL HAVE A LOT

MORE AHEAD TONIGHT, INCLUDING

HOW CANADA FIT INTO VLADIMIR

PUTIN'S ANNUAL CALL-IN

TELEVISION SHOW IN RUSSIA.

HE HAD PLENTY OF BLAME TO PASS

AROUND BUT SYMPATHY FOR THIS

COUNTRY.

>>> FIRST, LET'S TAKE YOU TO

NOVA SCOTIA WHERE THE TINY

VILLAGE OF BADDECK HAS HAD A

DEVASTATING BLOW.

AN HISTORIC INN CONSIDERED AN

ICON OF THE COMMUNITY AND A DRAW

FOR PEOPLE ACROSS COUNTRY WENT

UP IN FLAMES LAST NIGHT.

IT'S BEING DESCRIBED AS AN ANGRY

FIRE, AND ONE THAT MOVED

QUICKLY.

IT TOOK JUST HOURS TO TURN 170

YEARS OF HISTORY TO ASH.

>> WE HEARD SOMEONE RUNNING UP

AND DOWN THE HALLWAY WHO TURNED

TAUGHT ON AN EMPLOYEE OF THE

INVERARY RESORT AND TELLING

PEOPLE, THERE IS A FIRE, GET

OUT, GET OUT.

>> Andrew: IT WAS AROUND 2:00

a.m. LOCAL TIME, THE HEART OF

THE INVERARY RESORT WENT UP IN

FLAMES.

FORTUNATELY, EVERYONE GOT OUT IN

TIME AND SAFELY.

>> WE WATCHED OUR ROOM THAT WE

WERE IN JUST COLLAPSE TO THE

GROUND.

>> Andrew: AND AS OF SUN ROSE

OVER CAPE BRETON THIS WAS WHAT

WAS LEFT OF THE ORIGINAL

BUILDING.

THERE'S NO OFFICIAL WORD YET ON

A CAUSE BUT FIREFIGHTERS HAVE

ZEROED IN ON THE KITCHEN.

>> WE HAD BREAKFAST THERE THE

DAY BEFORE AND DINNER THERE LAST

NIGHT.

LOVELY LOBSTER AND NOW IT'S ALL

GONE.

>> Andrew: THE INVERARY WAS

BUILT AROUND 1850 AS A PRIVATE

ESTATE AND CONVERTED TO AN INN

AFTER THE SECOND WORLD WAR.

BUT OWNERSHIP STAYED WITHIN A

TIGHT KNIT GROUP OF FAMILIES

INCLUDING THE CURRENT OWNERS WHO

HAVE RUN THE RESORT FOR NEARLY

HALF A CENTURY.

>> WE'VE HAD GENERATIONS OF

PEOPLE STAY THERE AND

GENERATIONS WORK THERE SO IT'S

AN IMPORTANT AND ICONIC

SIGNATURE RESORT THAT WE LOST

TODAY IN OUR COMMUNITY.

>> Andrew: THE LOSS IS IMMENSE

BUT INCREDIBLY THERE'S ALSO A

GLIMPSE OF HOPE.

DESPITE LOSING THE DINING ROOM,

THE KITCHEN, RECEPTION AREA AND

SOME ROOMS ENOUGH AREAS WERE

SPARED THAT THE RESORT IS

ACTUALLY STILL OPEN FOR

(*)

(*)

>> Andrew: IT IS RUSSIA'S MOST

POPULAR TELEVISION CALL-IN SHOW

AND A POLITICAL RITUAL FOR

VIEWERS, THEIR CHANCE TO ASK

VLADIMIR PUTIN DIRECTLY FOR

HELP.

IN A COUNTRY WITH A BLUNT

BUREAUCRACY, SOMETIMES A PLEA TO

THE PRESIDENT HIMSELF IS THE

BEST WAY TO GET THINGS DONE, BUT

THIS TIME AROUND AS MOSCOW

CORRESPONDENT CHRIS BROWN

EXPLAINS WE ALSO GOT A GLIMPSE

INTO WHY CANADA HAS BEEN ON

PUTIN'S MIND.

(*)

>> Reporter: ONCE A YEAR

VLADIMIR PUTIN CASTS HIMSELF AS

RUSSIA'S FIXER-IN-CHIEF AS

ORDINARY RUSSIANS CALL IN ON

NATIONAL TV AND PLEAD WITH HIM

TO SOLVE THEIR PROBLEMS.

THIS ST. PETERSBURG TRUCK DRIVER

COMPLAINED ABOUT THE HIGH GAS

PRICES.

>> [speaking foreign language]

LANGUAGE].

>> Reporter: BLAME THE ENERGY

MINISTER, SAID PUTIN, WHO HAD

ALL OF HIS NERVOUS-LOOKING

CABINET MINISTERS AT THE READY

TO EXPLAIN WHY THINGS ARE GOING

WRONG.

IT REINFORCES THE MESSAGE THAT

PUTIN'S KREMLIN GETS THINGS

DONE.

IT'S THE PUR BUREAUCRACY THAT IS

FAILING PEOPLE.

THESE PEOPLE BEGGED PUTIN TO

SAVE THEIR LOCAL HOSPITAL A FEW

HOURS OUTSIDE OF MOSCOW.

WE DON'T HAVE MEDICINE OR

EQUIPMENT, PLEADED THIS WOMAN.

WE'RE LEFT WITH NOTHING.

OTHERS WROTE IN COMPLAINING

ABOUT A SLUGGISH ECONOMY,

WONDERING WHEN THE U.S.-LED

SANCTIONS WILL BE LIFTED.

>> [speaking foreign

>> Reporter: THERE ARE MEANS

TO RESTRAIN RUSSIA, SAID PUTIN,

BUT THEN ADDED, IT'S NOT ONLY

THE RUSSIANS TREATED BADLY.

>> [speaking foreign

LANGUAGE].

>> Reporter: THE INTRODUCTION

OF RESTRICTIVE U.S. TARIFFS ON

STEEL, ON ALUMINUM, NOT ONLY FOR

EUROPE BUT ALSO FOR CANADA AND

MEXICO.

IN ESSENCE, THESE ARE ALSO

SANCTIONS THAT PUTIN, SUGGESTING

THAT CANADA AND RUSSIA, NOW

SHARE A COMMON CAUSE.

>> [speaking foreign

LANGUAGE].

Organics on Mars! Signs of Life? - Duration: 4:28.

In what was two of the greatest leaps yet in the search for life on Mars, today that

planet has once again tantalized us with what might be signs of both past and present life.

The first came from a 3.5 billion year old layer of rocks that the Mars Curiosity rover

drilled into.

Reported in a paper by Jennifer Eigenbrode and colleagues, link below, within this rock

layer, they detected organic molecules.

Mars has been hinting that something odd is going on on its surface for a while.

During the Viking missions, for example, two separate experiments on each lander designed

to search for life returned positives.

Those results were called into question, and remain so to this day, partly because another

experiment showed no evidence of organics on Mars.

Without organics, carbon-based life as we know it cannot get started.

But, that equation changed when scientists found perchlorates in the Martian soil.

We've heard a lot about perchlorates lately in relation to humans colonizing Mars.

Perchlorates are bad specifically because they destroy organic molecules.

The implication here is that while the surface of Mars may not have much in the way of organics

now, though at least some have been detected, it may have had plenty 3.5 billion years ago

when Mars was a very different and habitable environment.

In addition to organic molecules, the researchers also found molecules that are probably parts

of what once were much larger organic molecules.

But, perhaps most interestingly in this, are the concentrations of organics in the rock.

They look similar to earth rocks of the same age, and on earth, that is directly related

to the presence of life.

In other words, it's possible, though not provable that life was responsible for the

organics detected in the layer of rock on Mars.

The second discovery is perhaps even more tantalizing.

We've known for a while that Mars has methane emissions.

Methane can be produced two ways, geological and biologically.

On earth, most of our methane is biological.

On Mars, we don't know what produces it.

In a paper by Christopher Webster and colleagues, they detail that Mars' methane appears to

seep from underground reservoirs, which would be what you would expect if the methane were

being created by a geologic process.

But there's more, the researchers found that the concentrations of methane in the

Martian atmosphere cycles seasonally with the highest levels in the middle of summer

in the Northern Hemisphere.

This essentially means that Mars is producing its own methane, rather than being delivered

to it by material falling on the planet.

Methane itself is a gas created by life, and seasonal behaviour certainly raises an eyebrow,

but it could also be that the methane is geologic in nature, gets trapped on its way up, and

the warm weather allows more methane to free from the ground.

We now have multiple indicators that something strange is going on with Mars.

These new findings add to that list, but there are more.

In addition we have what may be microfossils of bacteria present in some of the Mars meteorites,

though that is still being debated.

We also have what look suspiciously like bacterial mats preserved in rock on Mars and unexplained

short term rises in methane measured by Curiosity.

None of these are settled, but the chances of Mars having or having had life seem to

do nothing but rise.

The discovery of life on Mars should that ever happen will have profound consequences.

Some will say meh, it's just a microbe, but hiding in that is a huge wildcard.

If we find that the Mars life is unique, it is not genetically related to us, then we

can say for the first time out of a science fiction context "We have discovered an alien

lifeform".

But if it's shown to be related, that opens up a huge question.

It would mean that panspermia did indeed occur.

So on which of the two planets, Mars and Earth, did life originally arise?

It would then be entirely possible that we are not technically native to planet earth,

but rather our planet of origin is Mars.

Thanks for listening!

the ancestral homeworld and punishing the inhabitants for our 3.5 billion year exile!

Roseanne Barr Rocks Nation With Sudden Announcement - Duration: 10:19.

Roseanne Barr Rocks Nation With Sudden Announcement

One week after her eponymous sitcom was cancelled by ABC over an offensive tweet, Roseanne Barr

reemerged to send a cryptic message on Twitter on Tuesday night.

"I'm making restitution for the pain I have caused," Barr tweeted, according to

Daily Mail.

It is not yet clear how Barr is making restitution.

Barr's show was cancelled after she posted a tweet saying that Barack Obama's former

advisor Valerie Jarrett looked like the offspring of the "Muslim Brotherhood and Planet of

the Apes."

Though she immediately apologized for the tweet and said that she did not know Jarrett

was African American, Barr's show was immediately cancelled and liberals have since been out

to completely destroy her life.

Barr has reportedly fled to Utah, where she has been pictured over the past few days looking

disheveled.

Rumors are swirling that ABC is planning to bring the show back without Barr, and will

instead focus the program around Sara Gilbert's character of Darlene.

Gilbert, who also serves as executive producer of the show, is said to have reached out to

cast and crew members to see if they would be interested in continuing with the show

without Barr.

It remains to be seen if that will happen or not.

This comes after XBlaze CEO Jeff Dillon offered Barr $150,000 to appear in an adult film.

"Part of what makes you unique as an actress, entrepreneur and media personality is your

attitude, specific beliefs and openness in saying exactly what you think and feel.

Sometimes that can get you into trouble, especially in this politically correct world we now live

in," he wrote in a letter to her.

"While this is not your usual brand of mainstream entertainment, we are certain that someone

like you, a superstar who still VERY influential in today's pop culture, can pull off the

performance of a lifetime as an adult entertainer in an industry that allows its stars to be

themselves."

Feds Released New Findings On Hillary Clinton Email Scandal - Duration: 10:30.

Feds Released New Findings On Hillary Clinton Email Scandal

Former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is in the spotlight again after the

Department of Justice Inspector General's office released a report regarding her use

of a private email server for work-related purposes while she was secretary of state. As

reported by Right Wing News, the report is expected to result in a firestorm of repercussions

for the conduct, highly questionable decisions, and lack of ethics displayed by senior-level

Justice Department and FBI officials during former President Barack Obama's regime.

"Given the tools available to the OIG and the credibility of Justice Department Inspector

General Michael Horowitz, the latest report could also uncover new and seriously damaging

information about Clinton's email practices, including her handling of classified information.

FBI Director James Comey (later fired by President Trump) criticized Clinton's handling of

emails in July 2016, while she was running for president against Donald Trump," wrote

Jason Chaffetz, the former chair of the United States House Committee on Oversight and Government

Reform. The fired FBI head infamously said that no reasonable prosecutor would file charges

against Hillary's criminal activities, but he later changed his tune.

"Although we did not find clear evidence that Secretary Clinton or her colleagues intended

to violate laws governing the handling of classified information, there is evidence

that they were extremely careless in their handling of very sensitive, highly classified

information," Comey said.

This comes one week after Republican lawmakers sent a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions

on Wednesday recommending that Clinton and former FBI Director James Comey be hit with

criminal charges.

They also recommended that other Obama officials be charged as well, including former Attorney

General Loretta Lynch, former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, as well as FBI Special Agent

Peter Strzok and his lover, FBI lawyer Lisa Page.

"Because we believe that those in positions of high authority should be treated the same

as every other American, we want to be sure that the potential violations of law outlined

below are vetted appropriately," the letter stated.

"The report provides the following alarming specifics, among others: 'Mr. Strzok texts

Ms. Page to tell her that, in fact, senior officials had decided to water down the reference

to President Obama to 'another senior government official," the criminal referral said.

Congress Drafted Articles Of Impeachment And Now All Hell Is Breaking Loose - Duration: 14:05.

Congress Drafted Articles Of Impeachment And Now All Hell Is Breaking Loose

Congress is on the verge of pulling the trigger.

Key members have drafted articles of impeachment.

And now all hell is breaking loose.

House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows is at the end of his rope.

Republicans in Congress have been digging into the FBI and Department of Justice's

misconduct during the 2016 election.

But Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is pulling every bureaucratic trick in the

book to stymie their efforts to bring the truth to light.

So Congress has now drafted articles of impeachment against Rosenstein, which Meadows says is

only a weapon of last resort.

The Washington Post reports:

"THE DRAFT STATES THAT ROSENSTEIN ALLEGEDLY "ENGAGED IN A PATTERN OF CONDUCT INCOMPATIBLE

WITH THE TRUST AND CONFIDENCE PLACED IN HIM IN THAT POSITION BY REFUSING TO COMPLY WITH

A SUBPOENA ISSUED BY THE HOUSE COMMITTEE ON THE JUDICIARY ON MARCH 22, 2018," CONNECTED

TO THE CONGRESSIONAL INVESTIGATION INTO POTENTIAL ABUSES OF THE FOREIGN INTELLIGENCE SURVEILLANCE

ACT (FISA).

THE CAUCUS ALSO ALLEGES THAT ROSENSTEIN "FAILED TO ENFORCE MULTIPLE LAWS" INCLUDING "IMPROPER

AUTHORIZATION OF SEARCHES AND ELECTRONIC SURVEILLANCE" UNDER FISA, AND "FAILED TO ACT ON BEHALF

OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL BY PROPERLY SUPERVISING THE ADMINISTRATION OF FISA BY FAILING TO DEMONSTRATE

PROBABLE CAUSE TO BELIEVE THE TARGETS OF SURVEILLANCE WERE A FOREIGN POWER OR AGENTS OF A FOREIGN

POWER."

THE DRAFT WAS REFERRING TO THE MULTIPLE FISA WARRANTS OBTAINED TO CONDUCT SURVEILLANCE

ON FORMER TRUMP CAMPAIGN ADVISER CARTER PAGE.

ROSENSTEIN SIGNED AT LEAST ONE RENEWAL OF THE ORIGINAL FISA WARRANT, WITH OTHERS SIGNED

BY FORMER FBI DIRECTOR JAMES COMEY, FORMER DEPUTY FBI DIRECTOR ANDREW MCCABE, FORMER

ACTING ATTORNEY GENERAL SALLY YATES, AND OTHER JUSTICE DEPARTMENT OFFICIALS.

MCCABE, IN SENATE TESTIMONY, SAID THAT THE CONTROVERSIAL ANTI-TRUMP DOSSIER WAS THE BASIS

FOR FBI AND DOJ OFFICIALS SEEKING FISA WARRANTS.

THE DRAFT ALSO ALLEGES THAT ROSENSTEIN "FAILED HIS OATH OF OFFICE" BY "REFUSING TO DISCIPLINE"

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL AFTER "OBTAINING EVIDENCE OF DISQUALIFYING CONFLICTS OF INTEREST

DEMONSTRATED THROUGHOUT THE COURSE OF THE ONGOING INVESTIGATION REGARDING CHARGING DECISIONS

IN THE INVESTIGATION SURROUNDING FORMER SECRETARY CLINTON'S PRIVATE EMAIL SERVER."

ACCORDING TO THE DOCUMENT, ROSENSTEIN "KNOWINGLY PROVIDED MISLEADING STATEMENTS RELATED TO

THIS SUPERVISION" OF THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATION INTO THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN'S

ALLEGED CONTACTS WITH RUSSIA.

THE DRAFT SUGGESTS THE MISLEADING STATEMENT CAME DURING A HEARING ON DEC. 13, 2017, WHEN

HE SAID "ANY INVOLVEMENT FBI ATTORNEY BRUCE OHR HAD IN THE RUSSIAN INVESTIGATION WAS WITHOUT

HIS KNOWLEDGE."

Rosenstein responded by firing back that he will "not be extorted."

But Congress – under Article I of the Constitution – has oversight authority over the FBI and

DOJ.

Only a bureaucrat drunk with power would object to Congress exercising the authority it was

delegated by the Founding Fathers.

Rosenstein's loyalty should be to the Constitution.

Unfortunately Rosenstein believes he pledges allegiance to Robert Mueller

and the Deep State.

Crap Day Rant - Duration: 5:55.

So today's video is going to be a little different and it's trying to get the

delighting just right with this but yesterday was crap day

today's been a little better thing to kind of set in a little bit let me give

you a breakdown really what happened yesterday things were going well as

usual busy just busy busy busy still adjusting a lot to people coming into

the shop but so went to go get something to finish went to go get something to

finish up in order I'm gonna I'm gonna put that in there I'm just going to make

this a straight run and went to one of my vendors to get some turquoise ink my

car has been having problems it's a 2012 Chevy Cruze which I do not recommend

getting it's a 6-speed manual and the transmission went out it's flipping it

for a while went out barely made it back to the shop

yeah I got probably about a football field and away from the shop holding my

dad up because he's right down the road thanks old man I know you probably won't

ever see these he came and helped me out got a a to tow the car back to the shop

so we can kind of figure out what to do about the vehicle situation oh my god

this camera's heavy so

I thought it was a clutch it's been slipping for probably about a month I'm

like oh I'll get around to fixing it it's the transmission transmission just

went out and I know that because when your clutch slips you know you tend to

not really be able to go anywhere but for a split second it just really kicked

in and the clutch was grabbing like there wasn't anything wrong with it so

it's the transmission sucks so my dad comes up to help out a lot of people

were in and out of the shop my dad is hanging out the first time he

saw the shop which is really cool but at the same time it was a little

overwhelming that day had to finish up in order of 300 shirts didn't finish it

up so I had to call our client and she completely understood and

the phone lines went down that day as well

so as I'm trying to drive back to shop calling Shannon I'm like hey I might not

make it back to the shop she's like are you serious

yes I probably won't make it back luckily I've made it like I said not a

football field and Wayne walked back to the shop had tow truck

AAA get it back to the shop and tow truck guy was really cool we he knew

about screenprint and was kind of interested in getting into showed him

around the shop and we talked hot rods and stuff like that again a lot of foot

traffic and so we were here late after the client understood they came and

picked us shirts up today they're happy with them sorry today's Thursday and

then really need them to write not Friday I believe Saturday so she got the

shirts so last night as well we're working late and the power goes out what

the phone what is going on it was just a total

crap day still to this day trying to figure out what to do about the car

because we have a lot of orders to complete and so it wasn't a day of

rainbows and sunshine and it kind of was kind of trickling over today but keeping

a positive attitude we're gonna figure all this situation out so anyways guys

just kind of would share that with you because you know a lot of people just

kind of post the the good things sometimes slow bad things but I mean

we're all human and stuff happens as my dad says shit happens or if it's not one

thing it's another and that seemed to be yesterday it's almost like bad things

come in threes and assists so anyways guys thanks for tuning in I really

appreciate it and check out some more of our videos and we'll see you all around

Yes I like you

And you can't imagine how much, how much. Yes I like you

And you'd be surprised since when, since when

You're special, you're the paradies. I see you walking by and it paralizes me

What are you doing? Continue singing

No, haven't I to follow the instructions of my supervsisor?

Yes of course and as your supervisor I instruct you to continue singing. Thanks

No I already told you

What do you mean no? Should I call Gary and tell him you don't follow my instructions?

My uncle won't like this kind of instruction

Well but your uncle isn't here so come on

Please Nico. I'm learning a lot when you sing

Okay but you have to sit next to me

I'd love to

Yes I like you and you can't imagine how much, how much

Yes I like you and you'd be surprised since when, since when

You're special, you're the paradies. I see you walking by and it paralizes me

You're smile makes me shine and lets me dream and hypnotizes me

Cutie, you couldn't be cuter. Just tell me yes. Don't tell me no

Cutie, you couldn't be cuter. Give me your heart. Give me all of your love

Give me love, just love. Yes I like you

And you couldn't imagine how much, how much

The women behind 'Sharp Objects' wanted to bust the frilly female narrative - Duration: 5:09.

The opening night of the seventh annual ATX Television Festival brought out the big names Thursday with a world premiere screening and panel for HBO's upcoming limited series "Sharp Objects

" The psychological thriller, an adaptation of Gillian Flynn's 2006 novel of the same name, is adapted by Marti Noxon ("Dietland," "UnReal") and stars Amy Adams as a reporter who returns to her hometown to cover the murders of two young girls

The eight-part miniseries is directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, who also helmed the first season of last year's critically acclaimed "Big Little Lies

" Advertisement Adams, Flynn, Noxon and Valle took part in a panel following the screening and talked about taking the small-screen approach on the dark narrative that was originally envisioned by Jason Blum's Alliance, which had optioned the book, as a feature film

"Movies with complicated female leads don't get the support and they don't get the attention they deserve," said Noxon, who championed telling the story as a TV series

"I've spent the last five or six years of my career taking 'difficult women' projects, or making them up, and putting them on TV instead

" That struggle — and drive — to stretch the female narrative was part of the the impetus that led Flynn to write "Sharp Objects" more than a decade ago

"I was working at [Entertainment Weekly] and I was reading tons, and ingesting a ton, of movies and TV," Flynn said

"And what I was really discovering was there were a lot of stories of men and violence, and men and rage, and how they handle it, but not much on how women handle their anger and violence — particularly generationally

At the time, there was a lot of chick lit. Stories about women who shopped, and their big crisis was, 'Can I find the right shoe? And get the right shoe? And get the right man and the right cosmopolitan?' There was a lot of crickets at the time of trying to sell ["Sharp Objects"]

No one wants to hear this kind of story. No one wants to hear about women we can't root for

" "Sharp Objects" marks Adams' return to television following an illustrious foray into film

And the series marks the first time she has served as an executive producer on a project

"It's something that I've been wanting to do, but just have been really focused and really busy on my feature career," Adams said

"So when this presented itself … there was just such a camaraderie and such an understanding of what we were going to do, that I thought this was a wonderful opportunity to return to television

Television is in such a renaissance right now and it's a wonderful place to tell stories

" But the "Sharp Objects" experience also made it a bit of a challenge to return to film

"It's changed the way I've looked approaching a character," Adams said. "I'm getting ready to go back and do something on film and I'm like, 'Oh gosh, how am i going to tell this story in 1 hour and 20 minutes?'" "Sharp Objects" will premiere July 8 on HBO
