GOP healthcare bill hangs in the balance

House Republicans are taking fire from all sides as they seek to push through their plan
to repeal and replace ObamaCare, known as the American Health Care Act (AHCA).
Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) has guaranteed the bill will pass Congress, but it won�t
be a smooth ride to President Trump�s desk.
Here are the factors that are likely to determine whether the legislation lives or dies.
The math
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) is expected this week to release its score of the GOP
legislation.
Opponents of the bill on the left are eagerly awaiting the CBO�s analysis, which will
estimate how much the plan will cost and how many people might lose healthcare coverage
if it were enacted.
The CBO is widely expected, even among Republicans, to estimate that millions of people would
no longer have health insurance under the plan.
With that in mind, Republicans are already looking to discredit the office and downplay
the importance of the score.
�If you�re looking at the CBO for accuracy, you�re looking in the wrong place,� White
House press secretary Sean Spicer said earlier this week.
Ryan, meanwhile, compared CBO scores to a �beauty contest.�
�Our goal is not to show a pretty piece of paper that says we�re mandating great
things for Americans. Our goal is to get a vibrant healthcare system that�s patient-centered,
that brings down costs, that increases choices, that has a marketplace so that we lower the
costs and increase, and therefore increase the access to affordable care,� he said.
The Brookings Institution last week estimated that the CBO would report at least 15 million
people would lose coverage under the measure.
While such a score is sure to make headlines, it remains to be seen how the report will
affect the legislative debate � if it does at all.
The governors
Republican governors from states that took ObamaCare�s Medicaid expansion are wary
of the healthcare legislation.
Thirty-one states expanded their Medicaid programs under ObamaCare, but the AHCA would
phase it out starting Jan. 1, 2020.
�Phasing out Medicaid coverage without a viable alternative is counterproductive and
unnecessarily puts at risk our ability to treat the drug addicted, mentally ill, and
working poor who now have access to a stable source of care,� Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R)
said in a statement Wednesday.
The governors met with the White House and GOP leadership about ObamaCare and Medicaid
during their annual conference earlier this month, but Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval (R)
said this week the resulting plan �doesn�t include anything that the governors have talked
about.�
�We�ve said all along �work with the governors,� that it should be a governor-led
effort and for the Congress to rely on their governors,� Sandoval said.
Lawmakers pay close attention to pressure from their home states, so the objections
of the governors could make a difference.
The outside groups
Leading conservative groups have come out firmly against the healthcare proposal, saying
it doesn�t live up to the GOP�s promise of fully repealing ObamaCare.
Heritage Action, FreedomWorks and Americans for Prosperity are all planning on upping
the pressure on GOP leadership to make significant changes.
�This is simply not a full repeal of ObamaCare. It falls far short of the promises Republicans
made to the American people in four consecutive federal elections,� AFP president Tim Phillips
told The Hill Tuesday.
�The proposed legislation trades one form of government subsidy for another government
subsidy, and doesn�t roll back the mandate of ObamaCare. It�s a poor first attempt."
The groups provide financial and political support to back Republicans in their election
races, and they could make life difficult for lawmakers in 2018 if they don�t fully
repeal the healthcare law.
AFP is planning a campaign aimed at pressuring Republicans into a full repeal and told The
New York Times it was prepared to bring �significant resources� to the fight.
Meanwhile, professional associations representing physicians, hospitals, insurers and seniors
have all opposed the AHCA. Support from those groups was crucial to the passage of ObamaCare
in 2010.
The town hall pressure
GOP lawmakers have faced pressure from constituents at town halls in recent weeks, with many calling
on Congress to keep ObamaCare.
The backlash is even happening in deep red states like Iowa and Kentucky.
That pressure may cause some lawmakers to reconsider how they will vote on repeal legislation,
but it also may not.
House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-Texas) said town halls would not
alter Republican plans to repeal and replace the law.
"I don't think it will," Brady said.
"I think it's healthy to have these discussions."
The conservatives
The lack of conservative support is endangering the plan�s chance of passing the House.
Assuming all members vote and all Democrats vote no, it would take 21 House GOP defections
to kill the bill.
But members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus have blasted the legislation as �ObamaCare
2.0� and �ObamaCare lite,� mainly because of its reliance on refundable tax credits,
which they call a new entitlement program.
Freedom Caucus members came out of their meeting Tuesday asserting that the bill does not have
the votes to pass.
�Right now, the Speaker of the House does not have the votes to pass this bill unless
he�s got substantial Democratic support,� said Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.)
Conservatives insist that Trump told them he is open to negotiating the contents of
the bill, although House leadership has said they want to pass the measure as is.
�The conversations I�m having with members of the administration would indicate that
they are still willing to negotiate in good faith. That has been reaffirmed time after
time,� Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), chairman of the Freedom Caucus, said Friday.
Meadows also said it would be a �faulty assumption� if leadership thinks conservatives
will eventually back the bill as drafted.
The president
Trump campaigned on the promise to repeal ObamaCare; now it�s crunch time.
�We must act now to save Americans from the imploding ObamaCare disaster,� Trump
said while meeting with House committee chairmen at the White House Friday.
His backing of the AHCA could give it the momentum it needs to pass Congress. He�s
been courting conservatives to support the legislation, most recently by bowling with
members of the Freedom Caucus at the White House Thursday.
If GOP leaders are going to get the healthcare bill passed, they�ll need Trump to grab
the bully pulpit and not let up.
The Senate
The AHCA hasn�t even reached the House floor, but it�s already receiving pushback from
Republican senators.
Sen. Tom Cotton said the House GOP should �start over� on its replacement plan.
�House health-care bill can�t pass Senate without major changes,� Cotton tweeted Thursday.
�To my friends in House: pause, start over. Get it right, don�t get it fast.�
The legislation has been criticized by at least 11 senators, including some from Medicaid
expansion states who don�t want to see the expansion rolled back.
Conservatives like Sen. Rand Paul, meanwhile, are backing the Freedom Caucus�s push for
repealing more of ObamaCare. Paul has introduced his own legislation to repeal ObamaCare.
Just three Republican no votes would likely sink
the healthcare legislation in the Senate.

what are your expectations towards the end of the season?
the last part of the season is very important for us
we are not playoff-bound yet, we still need to win
2-3 games
starting from tonight's game
and going forward with the next ones
we are not allowed to make
mistakes at this point, so
we got to stay focused, like we did in our last road trip which has lasted
12 days, with 3 W's and 3 L's
a .500 winning percentage on the road is a good pace
we won in Denver
we won in Indianapolis (Pacers are great at home)
today we are playing against the best team we've played
since the All Star break, so it is a good test
we got to be ready from the start of the game
You guys were stable at the 3rd spot in the Eastern Conference
starting the season, then you started to struggle... What happened?
It was like...
I don't want to look for excuses, but our schedule was pretty strong
Cody Zeller has been injured for a
long period
I was injured for 10 days, too
which means being sidelined for 4-5 games
that was not a
good period for us, but
we are still here battling for our playoff spot
we are only 2-3 games away from our goal and we'll give
everything we got in order to reach it
when we last spoke in November you were excited about the Hornets organization
do you still feel the same after the past months
are you still happy to be in Charlotte?
of course I do, the Hornets are a great club
very professional and
oriented to the future
this is an important thing
I am coming from 2 games in which I didn't do that well
looking at myself, I got to be more agressive and help the team
in order to win the next games
I'll be focused on that
always keeping in mind what is our goal as a team, which are the playoffs
Do you feel like you will remain in Charlotte
after this summer?
I have played in lots of teams by now, I know that the NBA is a business
very peculiar
you can't consider yourself as a
part of a family for a long time, you can always be traded the very next day
Personally I am so happy to be in Charlotte, where I can improve as a player
and to be an important piece of this team
and
I would be happy to be here
for the next season too, so
but as I told you before, you never know
your 3pt percentage unfortunatelly dropped at some point...

maybe a lack of...
maybe the tiredness, I don't know
anyway, a shooter must be always confident
and be costantly aggressive while waiting for his stroke to come back
keeping to take his shots
there was a period in which
I had a shooting slump
I know I can do more and I am constantly working on my shot
I know that my 3pt percentage must be
around 40%, so
I am absolutely not satisfied with my percentage right now, besides a good
season start
we still got 20 games to play
I'll do my best to be more aggressive and to help the team reaching the playoffs
When we spoke to coach Ettore Messina he told us that at the beginning you were highly underrated
and then you had the great capability
to adapt yourself to every different situation you were brought in
taking the maximum advantage out of them
I know I have always been a bit underrated
but I did never care
too much about it
I love what I'm doing out here, I always try to improve and be a better
player
both on and off the court
I know that my success in the NBA
has surprised a lot of people
but my love for this game and my will to win
carried myself to be
the only Italian to win an NBA title, to win the 3 point contest
there is still so much work to do, though

he has always told me, even in these last 2 games
in which I have not played so well
and my self-confidence dropped down because of my bad shooting
he has always supported me

and to trust my stroke will come back. He is so close to the players

Pain & Tourettes - Duration: 5:50.
I'm Emily, here on TourettesWithPets,
and as you can see, this is not my normal filming location.
I am on the other side of my room because my back hurts.
I'm here to talk about Tourettes and pain.
Not like emotional pain, like "you put yourself through so much".
I'm talking about literal pain, like physical pain.
As you can see, I wear these gloves.
And they are padded on the palm
because I tend to hit myself, just general type hitting tics.
So these protect me from getting bruises.
I don't know if you can see, but I'm having a tic
where my arms are trying to go back
like my elbows want to touch each other, kind of.
And my shoulder blades want to do that.
But it hurts really bad because-
I don't know, I was doing it and then it just started hurting
really bad.
So, yeah, it just hurts really bad.
And I was using a heat pack,
let me bring it here.
This is my heat pack.
Filled with corn kernels.
You just pop it in the microwave and it comes out hot.
So it's just reusable.
I was using it earlier, and it just didn't really help with the whole-
usually with- a lot with Tourettes, you get muscle soreness,
especially in your back and your fingers, hands, um your abdominals,
just the whole shabang.
You can get pain in your-
eye muscles I guess?
'Cause eyerolling doesn't feel good.
But, so usually heat packs help with soreness,
but now I did something bad with a muscle back there so,
now I'm in some pain,
so that's why I'm sitting in bed.
I guess there's nothing else to do other than film
and look at videos on youtube.
There's not too much to do.
I could do homework.
It just really hurts.
So pain is not good with Tourettes.
A lot of people with mild Tourettes don't get pain.
But more moderate-severe people get a lot of neck pain especially.
ESPECIALLY NECK PAIN!
It's neck and back.
Usually there is people who get cramps in their hands.
This (gloves) also helps with trying to prevent hand cramps.
'Cause I'm not as flexible with these on.
So my fingers can't do as much damage
When they try to be flexible in a tic.
They're just kinda-
see without these on, I can get this finger to touch this finger
and actually overlap.
And as you can see, I can't do that with these on.
That's just kinda all I want to talk about on this video
'cause my back really hurts.
A lot of people- the general public-
when they think about problems with Tourettes,
they think of social situations,
which you're just kinda forced to constantly-
like it's not a a big deal.
Unless someone decides to be a butt.
The actual problems with Tourettes, the main ones,
are pain, like soreness and pulling muscles and whatnot,
and then sleeping is a big one.
Another one-
there are a few more.
I'm gonna make a video on the rest of the problems with Tourettes.
Like not just- like "someone thought I was weird",
but like actual problems like pain.
