They're right here! They're hooked on!
Aw, it looks like they're loving each other.
Where are we Roxy?
At the Aquarium!
And it's very...
See, there he is!
Did you see him?
wow
I think he knows it's very cold
[many people] Awww
It's very different from, like, Finding Dory.
wow
Ah, no way, I can touch stingrays?
Yep, feel free to touch the stingrays, just make sure that your hand is flat before coming in contact with them.
who's scared-y
Oh, look at this guy!
Do stingrays eat anything?
They eat fish.
Yep
Whoa!
We know they sting, because they're called a stingray.
Well, these guys don't sting because [inaudible]
yeah...
These ones won't sting you though, she said.
Did you put your hand out really really flat?
really really flat so it says hi?
mmm, I'm too scared...
That's okay, Roxy.
Oh look at this guy!
Can we go to the next...
Look at this guy, he came to say "Hi", Roxy.
Awww, Hi!
I think he is a scared cat like me.
What did you find, Tragen?
a game
Oh I think it's like a thing...
Like, you go get what they need.
what? whoa
Whoa
Oh
Roxy, Roxy
What are you doing?
Look, there are fishes in there
Playing a game
Playing a game...[laughter]
Oh, I think you are supposed to try to pick up all the trash that's down there.
Oh yeah
I'm going to try that because fishy needs..
Awww!
Here, let's see if Tragen has any better luck
Tragen?
Have you had any luck?
stranger: What's he trying to get
flip flop?
He has...He has to get trash
Oh
I'm done
You're done? Okay
Roxy: Look, it's sharks. Mom: Oh, tragen!
Roxy: I found a shark. mom: is that a shark?
Roxy! Roxy!
That's a shark alright
Told ya
I don't know, here he comes guys.
whoa...
[movie "Jaws" theme]
Yep, that's a shark
Come on let's go. Come on guys
What are those?
These are sharks
Bamboo sharks, right here
[gasp]
Those sharks over there, do you see them?
We're letting people pet them
Do you want to try?
tragen: yep. roxy: I want to try
Go on over
Now, your arms are going to be a little bit short
Your going to have to reach
because...oops...
Now she's swimming away, of course.
Roxy: I'm a scaredy cat
That's okay
Now, you might be able to reach in
But you have to get your sleeve all the way up
It's a little bit hard...
They have tiny little mouths on the bottom
I can't go look up. You can step up
eating snails and things like that
No, I can't put my..
Well, maybe you have to grow another year or two before you can really reach in.
Watch him pet
The stingrays outside in the white tent are much easier
You can both reach in and touch those probably much easier
Oh we tried to catch those
They were so fast
The ones outside? The ones out in the tent
Yea, they were having fun staying low.
Oh
yeah
When I'm out there, I tell people they're like cats
Some of those cats want to be petted and sometimes they stay just out of reach
Just out of reach
These guys are so relaxed
They're probably mostly asleep
Mostly asleep!?
They're nocturnal animals
Some of them are, like, awake
What happens when they're awake?
They swim around, more like that one
That one is definitely awake, it's swimming around
yeah
These ones are, like, asleep.
yeah
Whoa! Look at that one!
Isn't it pretty?
Predators think those big black spots are eyes
and so they want to leave it alone because they don't want to get eaten by something that big
Right, big eyes means big mouth. Right?
yeah
what's kind of funny...sometimes when you see it...watch it swim, walk along the bottom
Roxy: Sharks have a big mouth...
It can use it's flippers kind of like feet
Roxy: even they have small eyes
..and they can actually move out of water
and from one tide pool to another one
I almost got that one
Almost
Like, the water is actually deep
because it looked like I was almost getting it
Here, do you see them Roxy? Look
Look, there they are!
I don't see them
They're right here!
They're hooked on
Aw, it looks like they're loving each other
Ah! I see another one
There's more down here
"Sea lion show?"
Those two love...oh
Oh, the sea lion show!
Roxy, do you want to go to the sea lion show?
yeah
Jelly fishes!
I want to go to the Sea Lion Show.
[announcement about sea lion show]
Those are the actual jellyfish?
Oh wow!
Those are jellyfish that go really really deep
That's why it needs to be dark for them
and here's the tank again
did you know...
did you know that..
that jellyfish can live forever?
They can live forever??
you sure about that?
Yeah, in Octonauts... [Series 3, episode 17, Octonauts and the Immortal Jellyfish] [Turritopsis dohrnii]
um...
um...
Once, once that the jelly. Mom: Those are the Atlantic sea nettles
Mom?
In Octonauts, once the...
The jellyfish got scared it turned back to a baby
because it dies after it gets scared, just like a heart attack.
Roxy, come here
So these are Moon Jellies, right here
These ones, that we saw on the other side.
They're called Moon Jellies
Roxy, these were the little ones you were asking about
and these were the Atlantic sea nettles
whoa
and then over here, we have the Comb Jellies
You have really tiny ones? There they are!
The really tiny ones
The...Oh, my goodness, look at how small those are!
Those are so so tiny.
Dory!
Dory. Dory, go find nemo.
Those are umbrella jellyfish.
you got to find nemo.
Did you see the umbrella jellyfish?
That's what these little ones are called
Come on guys
Okay, so let's go find the Sea Lion show huh?
Here we go Roxy, Sea Lion show.
Go under this passage
Under the passage! Under the passage!
Here we go!
That's the way! That's the way!
yes
Anywhere in the center section is fine guys
[inaudible] This way! This way!
Where everyone else is.
"If you see a seal, it might need help"
"Give the animal plenty of space"
...behind the yellow line please
Give it up for your California Sea lions!
I said...Give it up for your California Sea lions!!!
That's more like it!
Let's meet the team!
And now, Foxwoods Marine theater...
It's time for the starting line ups!
At 8 years old and 155 pounds and growing...
She's the oldest and most dominant sea lion at mystic aquarium...
She also gets sassy during breeding season...
Give it up for Cali!
Well cali [inaudible] often posed a challenge for us even when you was only one year old.
But here at Mystic aquarium she is one of our veteran sea lions
She does a ton of fun behaviors. She has the sea lion roll.
And she can also demonstrate for all of you, just how strong sea lions are
by supporting all her entire body weight on just those front two flippers
Cali also knows the importance of conserving and protecting our ocean planet though.
She knows that one way we can all conserve energy everywhere at home is by turning off the lights whenever we are ready to leave the room.
Let's here it for Cali!
Yea!
Cali!
At 3 years old and 132 pounds and growing...
This California Sea Lion is the softy of the bunch!
She's always looking for a friend, so if you see her on the street, make sure you say hello!
Give it up for Pip!!
pip
whoa
pip
pip?
I don't know why it is named...
Pip is from the Halloween [inaudible]
Pip is also stray? [inaudible] found off the coast of california
She dealing with her trainer Kristen today. She's 3 years old
Now pip and kristen have been working together for a very long time...
they've learned a couple of fun behaviors together...
such as this sea lion walk
where sea lions can use their rotating hip bone to walk on all fours
But not only that, but she can show you her impression of a seal moving on land.
[inaudible]
Now pip also knows the importance of protecting our ocean planet...
So she's going to show you her tip. Which is to all recycle.
so she can go ahead and pick up the trash that doesn't belong out there in the water
and bring it all the way back to her nearest recycling bin
Put your hands together for pip!
At 2 years old and 111 pounds and growing...
Our next California sea lion started from the bottom and now she's here!
She looks sweet, but acts spunky!
Put your hands together for Clara!
Clara!
Clara's also a rescued sea lion
In fact all six of the California sea lions in the foxwoods marine theater were once stranded animals and needed to be rescued.
Even though Clara is one of our youngest sea lions, she's learned a lot of behaviors, including...
How to shake it...
Now one thing that Clara and I are currently working on is her dance behavior
so we're going to see if she can alternate moving her front flippers...
...and dance...
Good...that was a great job!
Now, Clara inspires people every day by just being so darn cute
But if you do see these animals in the wild, please do not approach them.
Please leave that to trained professionals...
like me.
Awww
Let's hear it for Clara!
Ladies and Gentlemen, your California Sea Lions!!
