Mr. Beat presents
Supreme Court Briefs
Houston, Texas December 18, 1992
Someone shoots and kills two brothers, named Juan and Hector Garza.
Houston police arrive to the murder scene and find shotgun shell cases, but not much else.
Later, they invite Genovevo Salinas down to the station for questioning.
Salinas apparently had been at a party at the Garza residence the night before the murder.
He voluntarily goes down to the station, and the police do not arrest him nor read him the Miranda warning since he was free to leave at any time.
They question Salinas for an hour, and he even agrees to give the police his shotgun for testing.
However, according to the police report, Salinas stopped answering questions once the cops asked him if the gun would match the shells from the scene of the crime.
The police also reported that after he was asked the question he acted much more nervously and seemed deceptive. Salinas left shortly after this.
A bit later, police found out that indeed, Salina's gun matched the casings at the murder scene
They also heard from a witness who said Salinas had admitted to killing the victims.
So, a warrant went out for his arrest, but they couldn't find him.
They later found out he had fled to Mexico.
Flash forward almost 15 years later, in 2007, and a dude under a different name in Houston is arrested for drug charges.
The fingerprints matched those of someone already in their system. It was Salinas.
Boy was he surprised when he was arrested for the murder of the Garza brothers.
But Salinas wasn't going down without a fight.
At his trial, the prosecutor brought up how Salinas got all silent after the police asked him if the gun casings matched his shotgun, which was evidence that he was guilty.
Salinas argued that the Fifth Amendment protected his right to remain silent, you know, to avoid self-incrimination.
However, in the end the trial court found Salinas guilty of the murders, but he only given 20 years in prison and a $5,000 fine?
Man, the justice system is weird.
It's appeal time, baby.
Salinas appealed to the Fourteenth Court of Appeals of Texas, and they agreed with the lower court.
Salinas appealed again to the Court of Criminal Appeals of Texas, who...yep, agreed with the lower courts.
So he appealed to the Supreme Court, and they agreed to hear the case in January 2013, hearing arguments on April 17, 2013, more than 20 years after the murders.
The lawyers for Salinas argued Miranda v. Arizona, and a case called Griffin v. California, both protected his 5th amendment right to remain silent.
Griffin v. California specifically brought up how prosecutors can't use a suspect's silence as evidence against her or him to the jury.
And the Miranda decision, well I have a video about that one so just watch it mmmk?
The prosecution for Texas argued, however, that the Fifth Amendment just protected citizens from being forced into incriminating themselves.
Salinas was not forced to be there. He volunteered.
So basically the question the Court looked at was "Does the Fifth Amendment protect a defendant's refusal to answer questions to the cops before she or he is read the Miranda warning or is arrested?"
The Court said "no." On June 17, 2013, the Court announced it had sided with Texas, voting 5-4.
Those 5 justices all voting against Salinas had different reasons for doing so.
Justices Alito, Roberts, and Kennedy all said Salinas had to clearly say he was using his 5th Amendment right to not incriminate himself in order to benefit from it.
Justices Thomas and Scalia said well, even if Salinas clearly said he was using his 5th Amendment right, he still wouldn't have the privilege.
Apparently they didn't like the Miranda or Griffin decisions, either.
Justice Breyer wrote the dissent. He argued that Salinas' silence was all he need to get his Fifth Amendment protections, and warned this decision could further hurt defendants who do not know their rights clearly enough down the road.
Salinas v. Texas kind of weakened the self incrimination clause of the Fifth Amendment.
I mean, now even people who are not suspects have to watch what they say or make sure they claim their right to remain silent, even if they haven't heard the Miranda warning.
Now Americans have to be even more careful when being questioned by the police.
But you could argue it did make it easier for prosecutors to do their job, even if less Americans would now be willing to talk to the police.
I'll see you for the next Supreme Court case, jury!
That was the follow-up case to Berghuis v. Thompkins
That was requested by Matthew Abbitt.
Thank you for requesting that. I know he wanted either one of those cases, and I chose the one that
was easier to say and a more interesting story.
You have the right to remain silent. You could plead the fifth.
or you could comment below and let me know
Do you agree with the majority or minority on this one?

The Difference Between Empaths and Lightworkers - Duration: 4:01.
The Difference Between Empaths and Lightworkers
Empaths and lightworkers are sometimes confused.
That is fine since they actually refer to people who have sensitive feeling.
However, there are actually some differences that separate between empaths and lightworker.
In a simple definition, empaths are people who can absorb and truly feel the emotions
of others.
While they do enjoy healing or helping others, this traits does not make them a lightworker.
Although, it's to be expected that there are some people who can be both just that not
all are both.
On the other hand, a lightworker is someone who is working to save the planet.
Someone who was sent here for that purpose.
Lightworkers are extra sensitive and often can be quite receptive to any energies they
come in contact with.
Let's see the whole list to understand more between empaths and lightworkers.
Please subscribe, click the bell and watch this video until the end to know the complete
information.
The Difference Between Empaths and Lightworkers
#1 - Needs to change the world
Lightworkers actually want to save the world from fear, disease, and other negativity.
Their main purpose in this life is to ensure people to have lesser conflict from time to
time.
Meanwhile, empaths typically only stop on the point that they can feel the world needs
change, but they have no ability to do so.
#2 - Better healing arts
Lightworkers are basically dedicating their life to heal the world.
They somehow love to study about fixing the world they are living in.
they are also eager to experiment by helping other people to be free from their problems.
Meanwhile, empaths usually only concern on how they can feel someone else.
They may provide suggestion, yet they need to be approached first before they are willing
to say something.
#3 - Love being around with people
Lightworkers have trained their mind to be around with a lot of people.
Compared to empaths, they can survive longer in the crowd without being exhausted.
It is also another reason why only lightworkers who are willing to act to save the world.
#4 - Called for healing
Empaths usually use their skills just to read someone's mind.
They rarely feel obligated to fix problems that people have.
However, lightworkers are quite different.
They feel called when someone – especially those who close to them – feel bad either
physically or mentally.
They try to figure out ways to cure them.
#5 - Who's to heal
Empaths are usually cannot control themselves when they start to care about others.
They only want to provide suggestions, solutions, and cure to other people.
They start doing that without knowing that their body actually the one that needs fixes.
Lightworkers, however, are different.
They know that they cannot help the world if they haven't helped themselves.
All in all, that's the key differences between being an empath and being a lightworker.
See?
They are not the same thing, but they are still quite similar, and in some cases they
can be one person.
The empath will become overwhelmed in crowds, and can tell when someone is being dishonest
whereas the lightworker likes to be out and about for the most part and is not quite intuitive.
Regardless of which of these two you are, you are wonderful.
If you are an empath or a lightworker you need to work to control your gift.
There is nothing worse than an uneducated individual with a skill like this.

LOL Stories Vol.12 [Pyke : The Bloodharbor Ripper] - Duration: 6:07.
Hello Internet! For your information.
This video is in Thai
but we also have English subtitle available for you
so don't forget to turn it on and enjoy!
Greeting everyone here we are once again with me Mack
In LOL Stories, where we tell the story of Champions
from League of Legends
and whose story are we gonna tell today
let's find out
His story began in Bilgewater
As a youth, Pyke started out like many in Bilgewater
on the slaughter docks
every day, monstrous creatures of the deep
were hauled in for rendering in the butcheries that lined the waterfront
He found employment in a district known as Bloodharbor
as even the tide itself was not strong enough to wash away the red slick that ran constantly down its wooden slips.
with hard labor and low pay combined
He became hungry for more than a few copper sprats in his pocket
He managed to talk his way onto a ship's crew
Few individuals dared to hunt in the traditional Serpent Isles manner
launching themselves at their targets to secure tow-hooks with their bare hands
and beginning to butcher the creatures while they yet lived
for the fresh organs harvest
Fearless and highly skilled in this regard
Pyke soon cut a name for himself as the best harpooner in Slaughter Docks
Then came the day
When they were out hunting the Jaull-fish
Creature form the depth with razor-toothed maw
within its maw is a sacs of sapphilite
That if harvested fresh would fetch a big prize
Several harpoon lines secured the beast
Pyke leapt into its mouth without hesitation.
It was not his first time doing this
But what he did not know
that it would be his last
As he set about his work
The Jaulls began to push against the ship's hull out of panic
The inexperienced captain
Who were in charge on that day
order the crews to cut the line
for fear of sinking his ship
That meant Pyke's lifeline as well
The last thing he saw before the beast's jaws snapped shut
was the look of horror on his crewmates' faces
as they watched him being swallowed alive.
But this was not the end for Pyke
In the deepest ocean, crushed by the titanic pressure
He opened his eyes once more
He was surrounded by beautiful blue lights everywhere
Then the echoes of something mysterious filled his brain
He felt the ancient power
it crushed his mind
Showed him the faces of his betrayers
all of them
A new hunger overtook Pyke, one for vengeance and retribution
Not long after
The killing began
from day to month
from month to year
Captains from many ships were slaughterd in the shadow of the night
By just hearing the question..
"You a captian?"
would drive any captain mad with fear
Soon it weren't just the captain
but everyone involved with this bussiness
got cut down one by one
Now they call him with a new name
The Bloodharbor Ripper
and then they pray-
that they are not on his list...

How to win individual medley races. Why swimmers slow down and how take advantage of it - Duration: 3:51.
Swimming the individual medley is not easy.
you must be good at all the four strokes or at least not have a very weak stroke.
But you can always tell when someone slows down in their weakest stroke, usually breaststroke.
To get good at your weakest stroke requieres a lot of time and practice but there is one
thing you can get better at more quickly, transitions.
Transitions in the individual medley are a weakness that many people have that normally
we don't think on improving, but you can drop a couple of seconds if you get them right.
Usually, and this goes for normal flip turns too, beginners slow down in the turn.
In fact they slow down before the turn.
I suggest you speed up before entering a transition or a flip turn.
To practice this is not enough to just start from behind the flags and swim to a fast turn,
you must practice this every time you swim. because one of the reasons we slow down is
fatigue and during a race you will be fatigued and won't have time to think of any of this.
We unconsciously think, there is a wall so I will get a mini rest for my arms and legs
while I glide and push off the wall.
So to get good at speeding up in the flip turns, you need to repeat to yourself "good,
there is a wall, I'll speed up and gain some advantage on my competitors" Then use
that last two strokes to get yourself close to the wall fast and use your core to bring
your legs to the wall and push off as hard as you can to then do some dolphin kicks or
breaststroke pullout and do a few quick effective strokes.
We have talked about all these transitions, so I'll put a playlist at the end where
you can learn each transition, specially in backstroke to breaststroke crossover turn, which is the most
challenging.
But now let's see some racing strategies that I suggest for each type of swimmer.
If you are a butterflier you need to go out in front, so push yourself a little more than
your competitors.
Just enough to get ahead.
Put in a lot of effort in your weakest stroke, which is usually breaststroke or backstroke
and give everything you have left on the freestyle part.
If you are a backstroker use the easy speed of the dive to get you to a comfortable but
fast butterfly.
Don't get too far behind the butterfliers.
Then push yourself on the backstroke and get ahead of them.
I know your weakest stroke is breaststroke so don't let them catch you before the freestyle.
If you are a breaststroker you have a secret weapon.
Try to stay close to everyone on the first half of the race and then blow past them in
breaststroke and they won't have enough energy to catch you on the freestyle.
If you are a freestyler, do you even swim the individual medley?
I don't think so.
I'm kidding.
You are probably used to going out fast on the butterfly, but I suggest going easy on
the butterfly and try to stay with everyone on the backstroke and breaststroke to get
a chance to beat everyone on the freestyle.
Remember, do not slow down on the transitions.
Get to the wall quickly and use the momentum to get some advantage on your competitors.
You can rest on the wall when you are done.

Mysterious Personal Shopper | 인형의 집 EP 65 [SUB : ENG, CHN / 2018.06.01] - Duration: 32:42.
(Episode 65)
Mom.
It hurt a lot, didn't it?
Don't cry.
Mom is fine.
It doesn't hurt at all.
Let me hug you, my daughter.
It's been 30 years.
- Mom... / - Gyeonghye.
Gyeonghye.
It was hard, wasn't it?
Yes.
Will you give me a hug?
This is the woman that locked me up for Seyeon.
Mom.
Thank you...
For calling me mom.
I thought you were going to be just Seyeon's mom.
Why did you come to me?
I know it was hard...
But you'll feel more at peace.
Let's make a fresh start.
Fresh start?
I rented a small apartment.
You and I can live there.
Why would I do that when I have a house?
Seyeon is living there.
It'll be uncomfortable.
Who?
Me?
Or Seyeon?
Gyeonghye.
You thanked me for calling you mom, right?
If you're thankful, make some effort.
Work at being my mom, instead of Seyeon's mom.
This is the address of the apartment.
I don't need it.
Don't give me useless things.
Find out what Seyeon is thinking about and tell me.
I'm sure she's scheming to take what's mine.
The shares, wealth and power that
grandpa gave me.
She and Jaejun are probably conspiring
to take them from me.
Find out what they're planning.
As soon as possible.
Gyeonghye.
You asked why I came to you instead
of being Seyeon's mom.
I thought...
You needed me more than Seyeon did.
As you said, she gained everything
and you lost everything.
But I guess I shouldn't be here.
Even after all that has happened...
You're only thinking about relying on me
to do bad things.
You gave birth to me.
But you taunt me about whether or not
you'll be my mom.
I don't think it's right to do that to me, who was
abandoned by grandpa for not being his blood.
Are you saying...
She won't be able to live much longer?
That's right.
Park Suran has an incredibly strong will
not to forget her daughter.
Her cognitive ability and memory
have improved significantly through her effort.
However, it isn't enough to live a normal life.
She has difficulty controlling her emotions as well.
Once she overcomes the shock and becomes stable,
you should take her home with you.
You were shocked
that I was here, weren't you?
You must be upset...
That your mom is sick and poor. Sorry.
Not at all.
Don't be.
Hong Seyeon.
I won't let a single hair of yours remain in my house.
I'll make you
take everything you dragged in with you.
I'll come back tomorrow.
Don't come too often.
In a week or two, I'll take you home.
No. Your grandpa won't like it.
Mom.
Grandpa...
Passed away.
When?
Why?
He had a bad liver.
He was getting it treated.
Did you go through...
His funeral all alone?
My poor Gyeonghye.
I'm sorry I couldn't do anything for you.
Do as your heart desires.
I'll take you to the house.
Okay.
Gyeonghye.
There's somewhere I really want to go.
Are you sure this is Bongcheon?
Yes. It has changed a lot, hasn't it?
I don't recognize any of it.
I'd get lost here.
I shouldn't have left the hospital.
What if I get lost by myself?
I'd only be a burden to you.
Don't worry.
I'll protect you. I won't lose you again.
Eat this first.
Jaejun...
Mr. Lee, you should eat too.
Yes, madam.
It's okay. It's okay.
Who is she?
I'm Eun Gyeonghye.
The owner of this house.
Gyeonghye, why is she Eun Gyeonghye?
Hong Seyeon. Didn't you explain who we are yet?
You're Seyeon?
What does she mean?
Gyeonghye,
what will I do with you?
How can I get you to come to your senses?
Come home right now.
Come and see who Seyeon brought here
to drive me mad.
Tell me.
Why did that woman call you Seyeon?
Seyeon is Yeongsuk's daughter.
Mom.
when you and dad were in that accident...
That woman and I were switched.
What?
Yeongsuk.
Gyeonghye's shivering more. What should I do?
Give her to me.
You two were switched?
Until recently, I lived as Hong Seyeon.
What?
You lived as Yeongsuk's daughter?
Yeongsuk's daughter
lived as my daughter, Gyeonghye?
Mom! Mom!
Where's Yeongsuk? Geum Yeong...
Suran.
The chairman didn't make you lie that Gyeonghye
had died, did he?
It was you, wasn't it?
Tell me.
Tell me.
Why did you say
Gyeonghye died in the accident? Why?
I'm sorry, Suran.
You witch!
You evil witch!
You saw me go insane because
I thought I lost my child.
You deceived me for 30 years!
I'm sorry.
You're sorry?
Sorry?
You go insane too thinking
that your healthy daughter is dead.
- You go insane too! / - Mom!
Mom.
You'll faint.
See that?
See who Seyeon calls mom now
instead of you?
In the end, only blood matters.
Who gave birth to her is what matters,
not who raised her.
Stay here. Don't go anywhere else.
Seyeon's birth mom is mentally unstable.
Who knows what she'll do to me in her rage?
If anything happens, you stop it.
Goodness, Manager Hong!
We recorded the highest sales today!
Gitae must be looking out for me up there
to make me rich.
- Manager Hong. / - Yes?
Is there a problem with today's sales?
Why are you so deep in thought? It isn't like you.
It's a bit complicated.
Between Gyeonghye and Seyeon,
who's my real sister?
Or are they both my sisters?
Why are you stressing about that?
You're right but...
Seyeon and I aren't actually related at all.
We don't share blood
but my feelings are more towards her.
Gyeonghye is my sister with whom I share a mom
but I don't think we could ever be like sisters.
Why do you worry about things like that?
Instead, why don't we go shopping for a little bit?
You can spend money a little now, can't you?
Whether Seyeon is your sister or Gyeonghye,
regardless, you have a rich sister.
Is that right? Then maybe
we can go shop for a little bit.
- That's right. / - Yes!
Yes!
This is so good.
(Barefoot)
Barefoot?
What's that?
Cheolsu...
Running away.
I was barefoot and
running away frantically in the middle of the night.
This is all the info I have about myself
at the time of the accident.
From where and who
do you think I was running away from that night?
What made me so scared and desperate...
That I ran away barefoot in the middle of the night?
Kkotnim,
do you remember something?
No. These aren't memories.
They're facts.
I met the driver of my hit-and-run accident.
What?
What are you saying?
Jang Myeonghwan is in a coma in the hospital.
Are you saying you went to see him again?
The real culprit wasn't Jang Myeonghwan.
It was Eun Gyeonghye.
What? What did you say?
Eun Gyeonghye was the one who ran you over?
Are you sure?
Eun Gyeonghye... Are you sure it was her?
Lady Geum asked me to write a petition
on her behalf a few days ago.
That's why I got to meet her in person.
How could mom ask you to do that?
I talked to her...
But there wasn't much.
I thought she'd know something
that could help me find my family.
I'm losing my mind!
What's the point in knowing that
Eun Gyeonghye was the driver?
I can't even punch her in the face.
And it's not like I can go to mom
and yell at her for making
Kkotnim write the petition.
That's right. There's only one thing I can do
in this situation.
I'll do whatever it takes
to find Kkotnim's family.
- Are you going somewhere? / - I'm busy!
Where are you going?
Are you sure about that?
You worked with Lee Jaeyeong
at the leather factory 5 years ago, right?
Please text me your address. I'll come right over.
Mr. Ma, are you going somewhere?
- I'm in a rush. I'll talk to you later. / - Yes, yes.
But I'm in a rush too. I'm in a huge rush.
Even if you're in a rush, please listen to me first.
Make it quick.
Let me work here.
I'll do anything you say,
so please teach me how to find people.
You must think this looks cool like some detective
action movie that you're saying that nonsense,
but I refuse your offer. I refuse, okay?
- You can't refuse... Wait... / - I'm busy!
I'll wait for you in the study.
Did Jaejun call you here too?
It must've been very hard for you.
What?
As soon as I found out that I was the real Gyeonghye,
grandpa suddenly passed away...
So I didn't have time to think about it.
But today,
when I thought about how my dad died tragically...
And my mom was sick
in a mental hospital for 30 years...
It hurts so much in here.
So much, that I can't breathe.
You've inherited a conglomerate
but you still have that nasty habit.
Begging for pity with your tears.
It makes me sick.
Stop it.
After experiencing the things that hurt you...
And made you miserable...
It's impossible for me to forgive you.
You just took it, like a coward.
I would've tried.
I would've convinced grandpa to forgive dad,
and I would've embraced mom.
You aren't qualified to take my place.
The core executives of Winners
are holding an emergency meeting right now.
The executives are holding a meeting without
the two people in charge at this hour?
Don't tell me...
It's about the chairman position.
Yes, it is.
Chairman Eun, for the scandal as the company's owner.
CEO Hong, for nonconfidence in your competency.
They are discussing removing the both of you.
Seyeon, what have you been doing?
You got out before I did. You should've fixed it.
You let things get this bad?
You're the one who caused this hit-and-run scandal.
And you still have to pay
for the attempted murder of Jang Myeonghwan.
That happened while living your life.
From suffering instead of you!
The results will be out tomorrow.
If both of you are removed,
the head executive position will be vacant again.
So I think one of you will get dismissed
or get suspended from your position.
You're incompetent, so you'll probably be removed.
No. You're unqualified, so you'll be removed.
Oh, my gosh.
I'm so tired.
Now that I'm old, even spending money is tiring.
Why is no one coming out to greet us?
May I really sleep here tonight?
I don't see why not.
You wanted to see Seyeon. I'll get her.
Shh! Do you know what time it is?
It's past midnight.
Everyone must be asleep, so let's go up quietly.
I can see her in the morning.
Is it really that late?
Then let's go to my room.
This is awesome.
Boss!
You evil witch!
Evil witch!
Mom...
Don't do this.
It's bad for your health to get agitated.
What happened here?
Mom? Why are you here?
Mom!
What happened to you?
Mom...
Mom...
Mom...
Mom...
You and I can't live in the same house.
When we find out who is
being kicked out of the company tomorrow,
one of us should move out of this house too.
Stop acting like a child.
You're being incredibly immature.
Tomorrow, you'll be leaving this house and
the company.
We've decided...
That from this moment,
both of you will be suspended from your positions.
Are you saying
you'll leave the chairman's seat vacant?
Did you think I'd consent to such a decision
that doesn't help the company at all?
It will not be vacant.
The company is in a crisis.
Where's Kim Hyojeong?
Can you connect me again to Dr. Min Uhyeok,
that you introduced to me before?
I'll keep you by my side and kill you slowly.
I'll drag you to hell with me when I die!
Why are you just watching mom being attacked?
Are you shunning your old mom
now that you're rich?
Give Geum Yeongsuk my regards.
Tell her that I, Jang Myeonghwan,
came back safely from hell.

What is digital mothering? - Duration: 3:14.
So there seems to be similarities with
the way in which mothers manage family related material and photos both on and
offline so in the research that I've been doing I've been interviewing
mothers about their uploads family photos and status updates to social
media and it seems that their postings respond to particular relational
concerns and practices about doing family in everyday life so for example
in Western culture the notion of togetherness is really central to the
way in which we understand and do family and this was reflected in how women were
talking about their their general uploads to social media so for example
they chose photos that reflected family togetherness so when all members of a
particular family were in the frame and what was important to this is that it
was the notion of togetherness that was prioritized over other things that we
might worry about when we're posting photos online so for example how we look
so what was being prioritized is a genuineness or authentic nurse about the
closeness of that family unit and what was particularly interesting is that the
mothers some of the mothers reported that their children were asking for
family self is what this seemed to point to is that doing family selfies were not
just a reflection or a representation of family togetherness but was an actual
practice of doing familial intimacy what the mothers also talked about was the
way that social media can generate quite negative judgment and in contrast to how
the phenomenon of sharenting is generally positioned the uploader family
material the mother's talked about the photos or
happy family photos and status updates is a
relatively safe thing to post about and seem to mitigate the idea of negative
judgment about these postings so the women discussed kind of the happy family
photo is quite resistant to criticism and they talked about the number of
likes so family photos generated quite what they saw as a high number of likes
and positive comments compared to other kinds of postings so it seems that the
posting of this kind of happy family material was in some respects a
defensive reaction toward against accusations of showing off get more from

I'm Nij - Duration: 7:24.
One may wonder, how Udis managed to preserve their mother tongue in the modern world?
We, Udis, a small nation, lived and continue living in the Nij village of Gabala province in Azerbaijan
We managed to preserve our mother tongue by speaking the language at home.
We are taught in Russian and Azerbaijani at school, but it didn't satisfy us.
Therefore, we tried to input Udi Language classes at primary school.
At this moment, books for primary school classes are ready and classes are taught with the new alphabet.
True, we lost our ancient alphabet and we are not able to restore it yet.
Some scientists in the world continue working on this issue. It is a tough process, but time will come,
and when we will be able to decipher the alphabet, we will use it.
In the modern world we created an alphabet using Cyrillic and Latin graphics
and this is the alphabet, which we teach at schools.
Do you see that cross?
Cross shows that Udis were Christians and today we continue being Christians.
From the 4th century the Albanian people officially adopted Christianity.
Until 836 AC people were going to churches
but after 836 with the decision of Russian Holy Sepulcher the Albanian church was suspended.
There are 3 churches in the village, one restored and the others should be restored by the government.
We are waiting for it.
And finally I want to say that we, the Udis, by preserving our past we see our future.
As the nations who don't have the past can't have a future
and we are sure that we will deliver this message to the next generation.

Friday Reads & A Beautiful Book | June 1st 2018 - Duration: 3:14.
Hi, it's Maija here with my Friday Reads, and this is a pretty simple Friday Reads
video to make because if you want to know what I have been reading, it's
basically: Fullmetal Alchemist, Fullmetal Alchemist, Fullmetal Alchemist, and
Fullmetal Alchemist. And if you want to know what I plan to be reading this weekend,
it's Fullmetal Alchemist. So basically, at the end of the year, my whole
Goodreads challenge is going to be filled with Fullmetal Alchemist volumes.
And if you want to know what I've been watching on Netflix, I've been watching
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. So I am reading the manga series and I am
watching - once I've finished a chunk of the manga volumes, I have been watching
the anime series together with my boyfriend, because I want him to know
all the plot twists that have been going on. We watched some 10 to 15 episodes of the
original Fullmetal Alchemist anime series back when it came out, but never
finished it, and also The Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is the one whose
storyline closely follows the manga. So whenever something big happens in the
manga, I want him to know about it, so we're watching the anime series together.
So basically I've just been on a huge Fullmetal Alchemist kick. And I am still in
the middle of Passing Strange by Ellen Klages, which I started during the Torathon,
which was last weekend, and I did finish The Murders of Molly Southbourne -
that was the only thing that I finished during the read-a-thon. I liked it.
And then I started Passing Strange, but I haven't read it yet, even though it's a
novella, but that is also on my to be read list. Then I also wanted to show you
this beautiful book that I found and pick it up yesterday, and this is East of
the Sun and West of the Moon: Old Tales from the North, illustrated by Kay Nielsen
and edited by Noel Daniel. So this is what it looks like. And this is basically an
art book of Kay Nielsen's, who did a lot of fairy tale
illustrations back in the early 1900s, and I really loved Kay Nielsen's
illustrations, especially his human figures - they are these elongated
figures. And this one has three different introductions; it has - oh, look at this - the
preface has The Origins of Norway's Famous Folk Tales, then it has a section
of Kay Nielsen's Life and Work. And it also has Books Become Art and Artist Rises to the
Top, which is about illustration and book illustration in the early 1900's, I
believe. And just look at this, so gorgeous. And then it has a bunch of
actual fairytales. So I just saw this at the bookstore and I had to pick it up
since I have looked at Kay Nielsen's art mainly online, and this one was such a
beautiful book. It's sort of a mix between hardcover and paperback, I'm not quite sure...
It's a bit of a bendable hardback, I'm not quite sure what these are made of. So
this is what the cover looks like, and here are the endpapers, and then it also
had stickers in between: Stick Your Own Fairy Tale. It has six different
illustrations by Kay Nielsen. I'm not sure what I'm gonna be doing with these
stickers, but I'm gonna hang on to them, and maybe I'll figure something out.
These are so beautiful...
So this is my Friday Reads, let me know what you're currently
reading, and I will see you in my next video.
