look for crawls and then we'll investigate the crawl
to see if the successful nest or if it's just a false crawl
We have a Hawksbill nest here
you can tell it's a nest because she's crawled up she's crawled through
and then her crawl disappears and you've got
this mound of fluffed up masking, this is her camouflaging her nest
and then she came over here that's probably where she finished masking
then you can see her track go right back to the water
We're gonna call it a suspected nest
because we're not digging down and touching the eggs
but we're pretty sure it's a nest here
It's interesting that she has chosen the tallest point of
vegetation in this area of beach
Hawksbills are looking for that silhouette
when they're coming out of the water at night time
they're gonna look for something tall to go towards
and that's what she's targeted, she came up a little bit
south of this point and she crawled right over to it and
she nested right underneath it, really cool.

Hike with me to the serene Granite and Hidden Lakes near Silver Lake, California - Duration: 18:04.
It's a beautiful day in the Sierra.
Just a very little breeze.
But we are starting to get some thunderstorms building.
Starting to see a few clouds.
Yeah, there's kind of a big one there.
I'm doing a time-lapse right now. So I'm hoping that this will turn out.
I'm hoping I also get off of the trail before we get any rain up here.
Although the forecast did say that there was not going to be any rain, so we'll see!
Not much of a creek left here.
Everything's drying up,
including the flowers.
What a bummer!
I'm a little late here.
This is about a thousand feet lower in elevation at least,
than where I was a few weeks ago with all the wildflowers.
I'll have to remember to get here earlier next year.
There are some very cool rocks here; huge boulders!
So, I don't know about you but the trail seems kind of obvious.
But I guess they want to make sure you don't miss it. Maybe because you'll be distracted by that big rock!
Because that is very big!
Kind of hard to tell on the GoPro how big it is.
But I'll take a walk up there and I'll show you just how ginormous it really is...
...and stand up next to it.
All right, so...
Not sure if you can see the scale. But I'm like 5'7", well, almost 5'7". And it is way over my head.
Pretty good size.
And there is a big dead tree. I wouldn't want to be around when that falls.

So, when you come up, here make sure you were watching for the trail. Especially for those areas that are rerouted.
Gotta say it is quite warm.
I think it was 63 degrees when I got out of my car this morning and that was like at 7:00.

They look like good trails. I'm going to go this way.
(This is my first view of Granite Lake - 1.4 miles in. I decide to go on to Granite Lake for my first stop.)
And I swear I'm standing here....and the mosquitos have really been bugging me.

Apparently these things really work.
Except for my legs. My legs are like getting chewed up. But...
I'd rather have that, than my face because that was getting really annoying!

Note to self: I might buy more. Maybe some pants!
If you do this trail, I would recommend that you do a couple things. 1. Make sure you're on trail.
I've noticed that there are quite a few down trees and they are covering the trail.
It is very difficult at points to follow the trail.
And I did point a few people in on the right direction.
So, I would highly recommend that if you are not real sure,
To stop - look - and make sure you're on trail, because it's very easy to get misdirected up here.
There's a lot of granite a lot of rock and
So look for the little rock cairns that you see all over the place.
I know some people don't like them, but I find that they're very helpful in making sure you're right on the trail. Another thing -
I would say is bring mosquito repellent or wear one of these shirts. I was getting eaten alive and
I put this shirt on and it was like they were gone as soon as I put the shirt on.
So thumbs up to the shirt!
This is a bugs away. I think they call it and
Highly recommend them so I don't have to wear a mosquito repellent because I hate that stuff. I hate Deet.
I almost forgot...
Yeah, I have another tip for you.
So, these are for gaiters,
and if you notice they attach at the bottom with a
little Velcro tab, actually, it's easier also because this little tab
has Velcro on it and (these gaiters come with the Velcro)
My gaiters have velcro as well. And so they attach
down here.
But basically what they do...(sorry, there's a fly on me)
...they keep dirt and rocks and things from getting into your shoes. And if you'll notice...
...they also have a little tab here
So they hook on.
Yes, my legs are really grubby right now. (laugh) Sorry!
But they are very, very cool, and they come in all sorts of colors, and you can actually pull them up and
hide some of the dirt! (laugh)
You can get them to match your shoes.
I like these because they're psychedelic.
I also have a pair that have the Milky Way on them!
And this is my view while I'm sitting here waiting for the time-lapse to run.

There are some ducks that are floating around out there somewhere on the lake

Oh! They're gonna come into view here. They're just past this big rock, right here?
You can see them way out there.
There's a mama and a whole bunch of babies. They're very tiny. They
Look like they might be the Mergansers maybe...
...or maybe Bufflheads. I don't know. They're pretty far out there. I can't tell.
But what a beautiful day!

These are called Dirty Girl Gaiters. There's a plug for him (link in description). I
have a couple of pair and I use them every time I hike.
Boys wear them too. Or men if you don't like to be called boys. (laugh)
The trail is really nice though, and these lakes are beautiful.
This one you will see I'm doing the time-lapse and then I will also show you quite a bit of video on the way up.

The Fracking Threat in Boulder County and What You Can Do - Duration: 5:03.
Boulder County is a unique place.
Much of the land has been protected by the county.
I love Boulder's Open Space.
It's pretty overwhelming how exquisite it is
and how much there is to explore.
We have so enjoyed really high values in our
land and our homes. Very clean. Protected from development. Very pleasant and...
Threatened.
People don't know that it's coming.
I could not believe that there's 24,000
active wells in Weld County.
The network of wells just spreading across
the land like a virus so we have got to say "no."
If we don't do anything this is gonna be here before we know it.
There are two fracking operators that are
trying to frack across 11,000 acres of our open space right now.
Imagine buying a home
and then having this big oil rig show up right here in your backyard kind of an
eye sore.
The odor, the smell from the fumes, and the noise from the drilling...
It's nerve shattering.
[LOUD FRACKING NOISE]
[LOUD FRACKING NOISE] Right now we're approximately a quarter mile from the
[LOUD FRACKING NOISE] well pad and the noise is pretty distracting even for this interview.
Being this close to a site you're breathing in volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
like benzene, which is known to be cancer-causing so... I just don't feel
like this should be in anyone's neighborhood or by anybody's playground.
Well, if you're being gassed, I think you have a right to resist.
And I think we're being gassed.
The regulations that are in place are arbitrary and there's health studies to show this.
I wanted to understand what was happening to patients in Erie.
One young teenage girl, she was 16 years old, she had ethylbenzene three times the
concentration of the average smoker. Personally I would tell
patients not to buy a house anywhere within five miles of a natural gas well.
Fracking has made property values decrease substantially. This is costing
everyone in the community money.
It's just horrible. the amount of water that's
being used and the chemicals that are being injected into the rock formations,
it's just frightening.
What is the future of farming going to look like in this county?
It's dangerous we had an explosion last Christmas.
Breaking news outside Windsor, on the scene of that oil site explosion.
This was a well pad on the east side of town.
They could not put that fire out. They ran out of foam.
[LOUD EXPLOSION SOUND] Surveillance video
from a nearby business captured it all.
And there were 10 fire departments here.
The company that owns the site Extraction Oil & Gas-
This is a look at where the site is located,
East of Windsor
right off the Weld County Road 68. This just a few miles from town.
Windsor has been hurt by oil and gas. People hate these well pads.
The quality of life is not what is was.
When I think about the future of my two daughters, about what my
role is to them, I can't think of anything I wouldn't do. And when you see
threats to your family and to ones you love - how can you not act? How can you not stand up?
Iif we can come together as a community here in Boulder County where
we have amazing intellectual and creative talent. We have financial
privilege and this really deep and pure love for our open spaces I really
believe we will be a template for anti-fracking groups all over the
country, so let's create that ripple effect.
I don't see where it makes any
economic sense to use hydrocarbons anymore. We already have a cost-effective
solution. It's a matter of will to put it in play.
it's time for us to come
together as a community and we could make a difference not just in Boulder
but maybe all over our country.
Now is the time we have to turn the tide on
fracking and we need to stop it.
Boulder County is one of the most resourced,
intelligent, active, and health-conscious places on the planet.
Are we okay
that our corner of the earth becomes a major contributor to climate change?
If we can't stand up against this, who do we expect to be able to do that?
If it's between doing something and doing nothing you do something.
To think of
fracking this place...
I have to take a stand and it's it's not
a choice anymore. It's my ability to respond.
If we start
allowing fracking in this Open Space, it's gonna erase all that's beautiful
about Boulder.
While I have breath in me, while I have some resources that I can
donate to our Legal Defense Fund, while I have a voice I can do something,
so please join us in whatever way you can.
