Michael Scott Moore - Surviving Somali Pirates in "The Desert and the Sea" | The Daily Show - Duration: 9:54.

My guest tonight is a journalist and author

whose new book is called The Desert and the Sea:

977 Days Captive on the Somali Pirate Coast.

Please welcome Michael Scott Moore.

(cheering and applause)

-Welcome to the show. -Thank you. Good to see you.

This is one of those stories

that halfway through the book you have to stop

-and keep reminding yourself that it is real. -It's real.

It reads like a novel.

Every story has so much detail.

But let's start at the beginning.

The question that my grandmother would ask

if she were interviewing you and that is,

what were you doing in Somalia?

Why did I go? Yeah, right.

I was writing a book about pirates.

I was writing a very different book about pirates.

I went because I had covered a trial

of ten Somali pirates in Hamburg.

I was working in Germany at the time, in Berlin.

And, um, uh, it turned out

half of them were from this one town in central Somalia.

And I was already interested in the history of piracy

because piracy had sort of exploded

-off the Somali coast. -Right.

And I had a fabulous idea for a book.

And so you went there, and you tell the story

in the beginning of the book about how, you know,

these people surround your car--

there's a group of guys-- and you think to yourself,

"Oh, they're probably just gonna check my passport."

-Right. -You don't think that in this moment

you are being kidnapped.

M-My mind actually recoiled

-from the idea I was getting kidnapped. -Right.

And when-when that sinks into your brain,

-when that moment clicks, -Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.

what is your greatest fear?

Well, the first thing I thought about was my family.

I mean, I knew that I was, uh-- from that moment on,

it was gonna be miserable for my mother,

and for the rest of my family and friends.

Right. And you-you were kidnapped by these pirates,

and, um, what I love about this book--

Like, if I was recommending it to anyone, was, is, I'd say,

it's not about the result.

-Like, spoiler alert, you're here. -I made it out.

Right. Um... yeah. It's not about that.

It really is about the journey, the 977 days,

because you-you talk about the pirates,

and, honestly, what I found commendable

is that you humanize them.

Thank you. (chuckles)

W-Why would you do that? They kidnapped you.

That-that was-- that's what I wanted to do with the book.

I-- you know, I spent a lot of time with them.

It was not 24 hours of hatred all the time.

And it's impossible to live like that, as a matter of fact.

And, um, one thing I noticed when I got out,

I saw a movie by Abderrahmane Sissako

called Timbuktu, that made the Islamists

who were coming into Timbuktu ridiculous but human,

and that was my experience with the pirates.

You also talk about, in the book,

how the Somali pirate problem started as

-a reaction to colonialism. -Mm-hmm.

You talk about how countries like China, you know,

robbed the fishermen of their, of their livelihood.

You talk about how these countries

were thrust into poverty.

And-and it's an interesting idea,

but-but it's not an excuse to pillage and plunder.

Like, when you were sitting in... in captivity,

are you thinking to yourself,

"Well, I also understand how they got here"?

-You're not thinking it at that time. -(laughs) No.

No, because the roots of Somali piracy

are definitely in illegal fishing.

But by the time they were capturing big cargo ships,

and especially by the time they were capturing me,

it was no longer about illegal fishing.

-Right. -It was simply about greed.

It was about getting a lot of money.

And it had become a business.

-We-We've seen it now, and... -Organized crime.

Right. It's now... it's now gotten

to a place where people just accept it.

They go, "Somali pirates, Somali pirates, Somali pirates."

-Right. -What I really loved about the book, though,

is you have a few moments where there's humor

in what many people would think

is a completely humorless situation,

where you're laughing with your captors.

Like, at one point you talk about exercising,

and I really loved it,

because you decided to teach the Somali pirates yoga.

(laughs): Well, yes.

Okay, it didn't happen quite-quite that directly.

I knew I was gonna need to exercise

because I had moved into a prison house

that looked like it was going to be...

-my home for a while. -Right.

And so I asked them for a mat because I didn't think

I was gonna be able to jog around the room

without them shooting at me.

So I-I decided to get a mat and start to do yoga.

-Right. -And I had this idea

that I would do it while they weren't looking,

but there was no moment where they weren't looking.

So I started to do yoga, and they started to...

They thought it was funny,

and so they came in and imitated me, and slowly...

A few of them weren't joking, I realized,

and I started to correct their postures.

So I might actually be the only Westerner

who's taught yoga to Somali pirates.

You see, like-like, moments like that

really, really, I mean, illuminate,

you know, how-how amazing your journey was

in this experience.

Because you go through moments of joy.

-Fragments of joy. -Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

And then, I mean, there's a lot of pain throughout the story.

One of the most powerful quotes you have in the book,

and I'll paraphrase it,

is basically where you talk about hope

-and how dangerous hope can be. -Mm-hmm.

-It's horrible. -Why do you say that?

Because it was... I think the line is,

"Hope was like heroin for a hostage,

and it could be just as destructive."

And that was because you... you start to feel hope.

The pirates actually cultivated that.

They said, "Michael, you're gonna go out in two weeks.

You're gonna go out in one month." You know?

And you would believe it at first.

And then you'd be hopeful,

and then afterwards, it would be despair.

And it was... Each time through the cycle

would be worse than the time before.

So you-you went through this...

The cycle itself became destructive,

and you had to sort of detach yourself from that,

from the hope as well as the despair.

So, if I'm understanding you correctly, what you're saying

is the best way for you to cope with this

-was to let go of hope. -That's right.

That's right. At some point I-I knew

that there was at least a 50% chance

I wasn't gonna make it out alive.

So I had to let go of-of that notion

-that I might die or I might live. -Right.

The whole idea of a future had to sort of go away.

Right. And there are moments where you talk about...

uh, your-your wish to be free.

I mean, um, you know, there's a part in the book

-where you talk about seeing an unattended gun. -Mm-hmm.

-Yeah. -And that's one of those moments

where when I'm reading it...

I've played way too many PlayStation games.

-Mm-hmm. -So I'm like, "Oh, yeah, you grab the gun,

-and you shoot your way out." -You grab the gun.

-That's how you do it. Yeah, exactly. -But when you're

in that situation, you see the gun.

-Yep. -You think about grabbing the gun.

Like, how many times...

Does that also mess with you in a way?

That, I did that several times.

There was...

First of all, there were always guns lying around,

but in a few... on a few occasions,

there was just the gun,

and the pirate had left the room.

And I went through all the motions in my head,

and I thought about... I thought very carefully about doing that.

-And I would have if I'd been trained to do it. -Right.

Um, and, even then, it might have been suicidal.

In any case, there were always too many guards

for me to have done it, you know,

in any way that wasn't suicidal.

So I-I had to think about that often and wrestle with it.

And, eventually, I-I wound up, you know, s-settling myself.

You-you also have, um, a story

of how the-the pirates moved you around.

And, obviously, this was so that they wouldn't get caught.

-Mm-hmm. -And you-you talk about, um,

how, at one point, they took you onto a Japanese,

-um, tuna fishing boat. -It's--

-It was a tuna vessel run by a Taiwanese company. -Tuna vessel.

-Oh, it was Taiwanese. Right. -Mm-hmm. Yeah.

So-so, you're on this Taiwanese,

-uh, vessel that was used for tuna fishing, -Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

and what I like is, in the book, you say

you had the best food during your time,

-because you're eating sashimi every day. -That's true.

No, no, no. Not every day. But the-- but it was a tuna vessel

-with something like 100 tons of tuna on board, frozen. -Right.

And, uh, when they first took me on board, I was terrified.

I thought, you know, "My life is over. You know, this is it."

Uh, and, first of all,

I met 28 new hostages. 28 new friends.

-(chuckling) -Then the food was good. That's true.

And the-the food was good,

uh, because the kitchen was still operating.

It was an operating fishing sh-- fishing vessel

-with Chinese food that came out of the kitchen. -Right.

It was much better than the slop we were fed on land.

And every two weeks or so, they-they would haul out

a frozen tuna, carve it up with a power saw,

cook the tuna, and if the-- and whatever they didn't cook,

they left a little red brick aside

and actually, uh,

sliced it up for sashimi.

Do you-- do you-- In those moments--

I know it's a crazy thing, but that-that's what I picked up

in your book is, in those moments, did you find,

like, a-- like, a weird little bubble of joy in that moment,

when it's just you and your sushi on a pirate ship?

(laughs)

-Happily, it was me and 30 other guys. -Right.

Uh, 30 hostages enjoying sashimi.

-And that was something they did when they were at sea. -Right.

Every now and then, they treated themselves.

Um, they couldn't do that after the ship gave out.

And those guys spent almost five years in captivity,

I on-- I was only there for two years and eight months.

Wow, you say "only there for two years and eight months."

It's-it's-- It really is a fascinating story.

And-and, you know, one part in the book

that-that really blew my mind is when you get home.

And like I say, if you're gonna read the book,

there's-there's way too much for me to get through.

It's-it's a beautiful story.

But you-you get back to Germany

and...

-you open your Facebook -Mm-hmm.

and one of the pirates had sent you a message.

-(laughter) -Yes. That took--

Actually, it took-- it took a couple of weeks, but--

and we're not Facebook friends or anything like that--

but I have been messaged through that-that app,

uh, by a former guard, yeah.

Mm-hmm. Mohamed.

Your-your first-- your first instinct is to block.

-Yeah. -But then you went,

"No, I'm going to catch up with Mohamed."

I caught up with Mohamed.

We-We've had a-an ongoing,

sort of, slow-burning conversation, yeah.

And-and if he sent you a friend request, would you accept?

-No. -(laughter) -I don't blame you.

-That comes a little too close. -I really don't blame you.

It's-it's such a beautiful book. It's a fascinating story.

Sounds of NASA's Robotic Operations Center - Duration: 2:59.

My name is Brian Roberts.

I'm the head robotic technologist here at the Goddard Space Flight Center.

Today, we're going to take a tour of the ROC

or the Robotic Operations Center.

As you enter the ROC, you see a room that's a little bit smaller than a

gymnasium at a school.

You'll notice that the walls are

all black and that's to simulate the darkness of space so we

can shut the lights out in the room and the robots will be

in an environment that will be as dark as it is in space.

So just like sports teams practice before they play a game, we practice with

robots as well.

The first robot you'll hear is our engineering unit of the eventual robot that

will fly in space.

The reason we build that is so we can work out all the details of how to put the

robot together,

make sure it works before we build the more expensive

flight unit.

So the sound you hear sounds like hail hitting a tin roof.

What you'll hear is the brakes on the robot coming on and off.

moving back and forth and you kind of hear a tinging sound as the seven pieces

of metal are hitting each other.

This robot is a hexapod which is a motion platform

on which we mount a satellite mock-up

and the robot then moves that mock-up,

simulating its motion as it would be moving through space.

What you'll hear are

the motors moving back and forth and it kind of sounds like a car engine revving

up and revving down

as you push the gas pedal

and get more acceleration, less acceleration.

You'll hear those motors

moving the six legs of the robot up and down back and forth in front of the

robot.

The last robot you'll hear is an industrial robot that's used by car companies

and

other factories to assemble furniture, assemble cars or paint cars.

So this robot is about the size of a human, maybe six feet or so,

and it's got seven degrees of freedom, so seven individual

actuators that move.

What you'll hear is it moving through our facility and much like the previous

robot,

you'll hear the motors kind of revving up and

revving down.

Thank you for spending some time today touring our Robotic Operations Facility

and listening to some of the robots that we

use to simulate robots working in space.

Vanessa Hudgens and Nina Dobrev Play "On Screen or In Real Life" | Cosmopolitan - Duration: 4:30.

Hey, I'm Vanessa Hudgens!

And I'm Nina Dobrev.

And we're gonna play a game called "On Screen...

Or In Real Life?"

My first kiss was in real life, not on screen.

It was an accident.

My first kiss was, in fact, an accident.

Shockingly I was not the one to make the first move.

I guess his friends told him to come to me.

I was at my locker, he tapped on my shoulder,

went to kiss my cheek, but in the moment that I turned, the lock happened.

My first kiss was not on screen and not in real life?

It was in an acting class.

I think I was probably seven years old?

And it was a scene from "My Girl" when they kiss

And I did not want to do it.

I was like, I don't feel well, Mom.

I don't think I can go.

And she was like you'll be fine.

I was literally sitting in class, pouting, eating hot Cheetos before I had to do my first kiss.

My first date would have to have been in high school.

Grade nine.

What was my first date?

My first date I got stood up.

This guy who I thought was so hot, he was like tall and blonde, totally my type.

And he was supposed to text me, and he never texted me.

My first graduation was, again, in real life.

Grade six graduation, from elementary school.

I almost said junior high.

My first graduation celebration, I guess would be on screen with "High School Musical"

I was home schooled and I missed the...

I don't know what it's called, the celebration?

The... commencement.

I literally just got a little certificate and the gown, and I took a picture in it.

And I was just like...

I did it.

My first time driving a car was off screen.

I learned how to drive stick shift first before everything else.

But my first motorcycle ride was on screen,

And I was on the Vampire Diaries with Stefan's character.

I was like, ooo, I'm going on a ride with a cute boy on a motorcycle, so risky and bad

boy moment.

But you do not look like a bad girl when you take that helmet off, it is bad.

My first time driving a car was real life.

I remember my first time on the freeway

I was on the 134 with my mom and my sister

And I remember trying to change lanes and looking over my shoulder

and before I knew it I was in the other lane.

Extremely dangerous.

My first school dance was in real life.

I think that I was probably ten.

And I went with my boyfriend at the time, named Julian.

We were like, holding each other and everyone was like, ohhh.

Kids, right?

My first concert was off screen and it was a Thirty Seconds To Mars concert.

Shout out to Jared Leto.

My first concert was real life.

Late in life.

I went to my first concert when I was like, fifteen.

And I think it was like, Justin Timberlake.

My first major fashion fail was never!

I stand by every look I've done.

Well, no.

I feel like, real life, at Coachella one year I opted to wear, like, thigh highs with rain boots.

I don't know what I was thinking.

Terrible, Horrifying, all of the above.

Torrifying, I think I went to say.

My first childbirth scene was on screen.

Still haven't done that off screen.

Not looking forward to it.

Rejected?

My first time I was like, oh nooo, was probably when I was probably nine years old

I tried out for the Hunchback of Notre Dame

And I really wanted the part of Esmeralda

And I got the role of Quasimodo.

So I still got a part.

Just not the part I wanted.

There was a lot of no's.

A lot of rejection in the industry that I have chosen to be my profession.

For every job that you go on, you go on a hundred auditions that don't work out for you.

So there's a lot of rejection off screen, to get on screen.

Essential Tips for Building Model Kits | Video Workbench: The Scale Model Show - Duration: 11:51.

- [Jason] A good idea while building model kits

is to put all your parts into baggies.

I know that just may seem like a bit of a stretch

as far as complicating things a little bit more,

but over time, if you put a lot of your parts into baggies,

you won't lose them or break them

and it keeps everything a lot more organized.

And organization is the key

to actually having fun and a good time

with model kit building.

As you can see here, with the time machine parts

that I have with the chair,

I have the larger parts in a large bag

and I have the smaller parts in a smaller baggie

inside the larger bag.

And this is so that I don't lose the parts

and they don't get broken,

and I can actually put this one whole section

somewhere else so that the parts won't get lost

and I can get to the quickly.

So a quick tip is just to be organized

and keep everything together.

(upbeat music)

I have all the parts laid out to each chair

that all the parts correspond with.

Each chair has a total number of 24 individual parts.

To the two time machine saddles that are on the left,

if you look in the rear of all the parts behind the seats,

you can see that I have dryfitted each bottom section

of each saddle.

Now what I mean by dry fitting

is that I've put parts together,

but I have not glued them yet.

I will show you with the saddle that's on the far right

how I will go about dry fitting parts.

I have the lower part, or the lower section

of the time machine saddle

that needs to be dry fit.

Now the definition of dry fitting is just that.

I'm not using anything wet

or any type of adhesive

in order to glue anything together.

And these four sections that you see

have a grove that's on the opposite side of the piece.

And basically it's going to fit around

or this part right here is going to slide

into this section right here.

Now let me show you how I dry fit these parts

to make sure that they fit properly.

Basically all I'm gonna do is I'm gonna turn 'em around,

and I'm gonna just slide 'em into the groovess.

Do the front, do the back,

and I'm gonna do each side.

(relaxing music)

And that's it.

All four sides of the bottom portion of the saddle

are now fit snug onto the base of the chair.

And that's it, that is exactly

what dry fitting is all about.

You wanna make sure that your parts fit

before you glue 'em together.

A good idea when working with either plastic or resin kits

is to mark the areas that need to be cut.

I suggest this so that it can save you a lot of time

and headache in the future.

Basically, I take a Sharpie marker,

and I draw either a squiggly line

or a slash or an X.

As you can see here,

I have squiggly lines, slashes, or Xes.

Also, a good suggestion is that

if you wanna be more specific

and a little bit more precise

depending upon what kind of model kit it is

and what kind of detail you want

and what you need to cut away,

make an X or make a box

and then use slashes to shade in the area

that you need to cut away.

So just remember, like the old saying goes,

measure twice, cut once.

Remember, this is a really good idea

to save you time and headaches in the future.

As you can see there I have a dust mask,

and it's very, very important

that you wear the mask when you're sanding resin.

You don't wanna breathe resin dust in,

it can give you upper respiratory problems

if done over time,

and it's just not safe for you to breathe in.

So please remember, wear a mask.

(loud drilling)

And you can see here my girlfriend

is starting to cut a lot of the large groove pieces

from the parts of the time machine

that are going to form the chair,

and obviously, as you can see here,

there's a lot of resin dust that's coming up,

and that's why she's wearing the mask.

Please remember, any time that you are cutting resin,

to please use a face mask.

(loud drilling)

OK, now that I've used the motor tool

to sand down around the area that I had

the Gorilla Super Glue,

now it's time to do some wet sanding.

And wet sanding is exactly just that.

You have a water bottle with water in it,

and basically all you do is

you spray the water onto the piece,

or if you would like,

you can spray it directly onto the sandpaper,

and then basically all you do is sand away.

Now what this will do is create a smoother surface.

(loud sanding)

Now if you were just to sand it without water,

it would actually make the surface a lot more rough,

and can cause more problems,

bigger holes, divots, scratches.

So all you do is to squirt the water on, start sanding,

and then basically you start with a low grade sandpaper,

and you end up going to a higher grade sandpaper

with more grit.

The higher the grit, the smoother the area's gonna be.

I show you an easy way to locate pupils

on either a bust or figure model.

So, why don't we get to the video.

No one item can make or break a figure

as effectively as the eyes.

If they are well painted,

they can make an inanimate model seem to come alive.

But no matter how well built or painted

a figure model may be,

if the eyes are poorly done,

it will only be a model.

There are any number of ways to select paints

and color schemes for painting eyes.

We're talking about human eyes here,

other beasties don't have to meet the same standard

or larger scale kits.

When you get much smaller than one twelve scale,

it's generally better to do little detailing

with the eyes than to do too much.

There's no one right way to paint eyes,

except for one rules: the pupils

of both eyes must be aligned in the same direction.

There are very few characters

that look good when they are cross-eyed or wall-eyed.

Frequently, the sculptors of the patterns for model kits

render the eyes as smooth sections of spheres.

This was the case with the model

we'll use as our example.

Geometric designs, one quarter scale resin bust

of The Bride of Frankenstein,

sculpted by Jeff Jaeger.

It would be easy to paint the whites

and irises of the eyes realistically,

but if the centers of the eyes, the pupils,

were out of alignment,

or weren't painted as perfectly round circles,

all the preceding work would be for nothing.

And yet, there's an easy way to render pupils,

which will work for most any scale model

with smooth eyes that are large enough to detail.

Simply drill the pupils out before painting the eyes.

This should be done

before the final color coats are applied,

preferably after the application of the primer

or base color.

At this stage, you can play around

with the position of the pupils

as the direction in which the eyes will be looking

can greatly effect the mood of the finished piece.

It's helpful to locate the position of the pupils

with a pencil,

and the paint will provide a little tooth for the lead.

Or, you can take a digital photo of the model,

and use a drawing program to move the pupils around.

When you think you've got the pupils accurately marked,

check by holding a model

so that you're looking straight into the eyes.

If you've got them lined up properly,

you'll get the unnerving sense

that the eyes are looking back at you.

If one mark is a little off,

now is the time to correct it.

Now all you have to do is drill out the pupils.

For this operation, a handheld pin vice is advisable

because you want the greatest control.

Only a shallow depression will be necessary

to create the pupil.

Now the rest of the eye can be painted,

because the pupils have already been centered

it will be much easier to paint the irises around them.

The result will be a convincing set of eyes

that will truly make your figure look alive.

Well I hope that you like the suggestion,

and find it useful in locating pupils

on a bust or a figure kit.

Now the right size to find the pupil area in scale

would be like a quarter size bust or larger,

or a larger, maybe 10 to 12 inch figure.

When you start getting smaller,

then I would either suggest

going under a magnifying glass

or getting decals that you can put on the eyes.

(upbeat music)

Chelsea have devised a plan to convince Eden Hazard to sign a new contract - Duration: 3:19.

It is nervous times for Chelsea right now.Uncertainty revolves around a number of their best players, although Eden Hazard's future will be the biggest concern for Chelsea fans

The 27-year-old has been linked to Real Madrid consistently throughout the summer, but his comments after Belgium defeated England 2-0 in their World Cup third-place playoff earlier this month only intensified that speculation

"For my career, certainly after this World Cup, I'm at a moment where I might change," he admitted

"We all know that I've always felt well at Chelsea, so … I've been linked to all the big clubs

"Next week it will be Bayern. No, I'm joking. You all know my preferred destination

" Chelsea will be trying their best to keep Hazard at the club, and they have devised a new plan in order to convince him to stay

And it is one that will be met with approval by Chelsea fans. There has also been speculation that Paris Saint-Germain have interest in N'Golo Kante, further intensified by Kylian Mbappe admitting he was doing his best to try and get Kante to move to the French capital

And, according to the Evening Standard, Chelsea have reacted to that by giving Kante a new contract worth £290,000-a-week

This is when Hazard is taken into account. It is believed the midfielder is prepared to put pen to paper and Chelsea feel that sends out a strong message of intent to Hazard, who has been subject of strong interest from Real Madrid

Chelsea will then try to negotiate with Hazard over a contract worth a minimum of £300,000-a-week

The Blues are optimistic their ability to keep a quality player like Kante will prove to Hazard they still have ambition to compete for major silverware

The Standard go on to state that his camp are currently not optimistic that a switch to the Bernabeu will take place, meaning they are more likely to entertain negotiations with Chelsea

If this plan works, that will be a masterstroke for Chelsea. And it will also be one that goes down very well with fans of the west London club

Not only will they keep one of the best midfielders in the world in Kante, they will also be able to keep one of the best players in world football in Hazard

Chelsea's season looked as if it could be a disaster just a few weeks ago, but if they are able to tie down both Kante and Hazard to new deals, it has the potential to turn into a very successful one

Minister McKenna's Beat Plastic Pollution Tour: Halifax, Nova Scotia - Duration: 1:32.

THE HONOURABLE CATHERINE MCKENNA (Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Canada)

So plastics are literally choking our oceans and our waters, and I'm on a plastic pollution

tour from coast to coast to coast across Canada to highlight the impacts of plastic pollution

and what we can do about it.

Here I am on the Atlantic part of my tour and I'm joined by Jennifer Provencher.

She's a scientist at Environment and Climate Change Canada who studies plastics as well

as birds -- so the impacts of plastics on birds.

Tell me Jennifer what…Tell me about plastics and what you're seeing in birds.

DR. JENNIFER PROVENCHER (Environment and Climate Change Canada Wildlife Specialist)

Sure.

What we're finding is that birds off the coast of Canada, while they're looking for

fish and zooplankton, they're picking up plastics; and this is happening on all three

of our coastlines.

And so we're finding that it's accumulating in their bodies and then once it's kind

of stuck in their stomachs it can actually really affect their health.

On the Atlantic coast we actually have -- this would be your human equivalent of plastics

-- and so the fulmars on the Atlantic coast have a large proportion of their stomach is

full of these plastics.

And we find that about 90% of the birds out on the Atlantic coast, 90% of the fulmars

have plastics and actually about 80% of those plastics are those hard plastics, those single-use

plastics that aren't being recycled.

And so this is one of the big challenges is figuring out which animals are vulnerable

to plastics and then potentially how that could be affecting human health.

HON. CATHERINE MCKENNA Well, I mean, I think what it does show is

that we need to take action to stop plastic pollution entering our waters.

Empowered Employment for Survivors of Sex Trafficking - Duration: 2:36.

(electronic music)

- [Tabea] Sometimes we think that our purpose in life

is so much further than it actually is.

It's right in front of our feet,

it's what we're passionate about.

(electronic music)

When I heard about human trafficking,

it triggered something in my heart,

and I thought, "What, people bought and sold as slaves

"and that still exists today, and I don't know

" anything about it?"

(electronic music)

The more I talked about it,

the more people joined right in and said,

"You're right, wow, why isn't anybody doing anything?"

So, this is a social business,

it's a safe work environment

for men and women who were exploited in the sex industry,

former prostitutes, but also victims of human

trafficking and it is job rehabilitation for them,

it is reintegration to the normal work force.

People are catching on with the whole idea

of I'm gonna give my kite instead of trashing it,

and again, we work with people who instead of trashing

them, instead of them feeling so devalued

of where they came from, they're now proud of what they do,

the money they earn, it's not something they just want

to throw away because they're not proud

of how they earned it.

But, they're so proud of something that

appears in front of their eyes,

they can watch how their creativity flows

into a product.

(electronic music)

The coolest thing is,

this could have been on the Lake of Galilee,

or this was somewhere on a wave in the Mediterranean.

We always try to get people's attention to the cause

in very funky ways, so we said,

"Why don't we just run in high heels?"

And, so often in life we think we have to have all

the answers to something before we start

being active about it.

And, I just realized that

the answers come by doing

something, they don't come if you're just going to sit

back and watch, and be all disturbed about it,

and all "Oh my goodness, this crazy world,

"what's going on?"

It's literally, what am I good at?

And let's just do it.

Chelsea's season looked as if it could be a disaster just a few weeks ago, but if they are able to tie down both Kante and Hazard to new deals, it has the potential to turn into a very successful one

less whites in nursing [more blacks] - Duration: 21:21.

- no there is less whites in nursing and more black stay tuned

nursin I diversity amongst RN and I did some research I was talking to what

started this was a friend of mine saw my video of what happened to me the

incident dealing with someone who had called me ignorant I'm not going to

elaborate on it if you want to check out the video anyway so we were talking

about that there is less whites or Caucasian women in nursing there are we

have male nurse but for this video when you think of nursing be honest what do

you think of Caucasian older if they're young blonde blue eyes

that's nurse unfortunately that's what the majority think when they think of

who's in nursing so I was talking to my friend like I said the other day and

we're just talking about Nursing in general because she is a nurse and we

went to Minnesota together we went to several tribal assignment together and

this one particular assignment we went the majority and nurse the travel nurse

were african-american blacks if you want to call it where whatever name you're

comfortable wit and forgive me if I switch in between african-american and

black the majority of us were there but the nurses in the hospital the majority

were Caucasian and so when I was talking to her the other day and she was saying

there's more black nurses than white nurse and I wanted to know

you know why is that because the mentality when we hear about nursing

everyone they always thinks is the white nurse when I come to the room to give to

introduce myself to the patient she thinks I'm there for something different

and I just it baffled me for years let's let realize that how can I change

that image that when people think of Nursing they only see a one color the

color of my shoes which is white the color of my uniform white and even if I

have a big sign and I talk about this a lot even if I have a big sign say RN or

it may say LPN there's no way they're gonna think that right but they don't

see the sign for some reason I don't understand why well anyway so I did a

little research and we were talking back afford and there's less white in nursing

there's more black and I'll tell you the reason why yes ninety percent of nursing

nurses are white there may be 20 percent blacks african-american and I'm not

talking about Hispanic cuz I don't think they want to be in our in our rating or

statistic I'm not talking about Indian because I don't know if they want to be

part of us and I'm not talking about Asian I'm going to be focusing this

video on african-american and Caucasian

diversity amongst RN more blacks in nursing than white I know what you're

thinking I know you saying that's impossible that there's less white in

nursing than blacks and I tell you a little story it's not

really a story but back in the days I guess back in the war days I looked this

up or back in the days all the white nurses who were in the field in the

nursing field working and then the husband got these big job executive or

you know high-paying ranking job that they could stay home and watch the kids

and most if 99% of Caucasian will rather stay home be a stay home mom and watch

the kids and they the ones that are home some of them are very intelligent their

career oriented and they have education but they just can afford to stay home

and watch the kid while their husband go travel out of state and do his job his

and maybe they have business

unfortunately it's not the choice for African American we don't have that

choice in fact we don't even have the husband we're mostly struggling single

mom nurses is a choice to provide for our family so while these Caucasian or

whites decided that they want to be home with the kids to raise the kids to

home-school the kids give them better opportunity in life while their husband

go out and the husband agree yeah it's okay for you to stay home you can always

go back if you want so when they came out of nursing that's when the

opportunity arose for most African American decided they want to go back to

school the doors open up a little bit just a little bit for the African

American and they decided to become nurses fast

become an LPN one year you can become an RN back in the

diploma program I'm talking about the eighties the seventies and they became

nurses so it's an influx of african-american West Indians people

from different Island that are considered black once you get here in

America you are black no matter how you may think different and so they decided

that's the profession to provide for their children to provide for the family

and he became nurses why am i touching on this topics like I said a friend of

mine we were talking about that but what happened influx of African Americans

decide to go back to school to become a nurse

now the husband of the whites I think I'm trying to say it's the 911 error

because ever since the attack on World Trade Center September 911 it seemed

like the world change it just affect everybody what it is but I felt like

there was a drastic change people start losing their job and the incident about

the home owners with the inflated rate of inflation and and home mortgage and

so these executive had stay-at-home wives they lost their job and then the

whites decide i'ma come back I have a degree I can go back to nursing

part-time or whatever and so they all come back into nursing they're coming

back basically by the tons now I want to take you back a little I did a research

like I said according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics 82% of our

is white and only 10% is black Hispanic although I said I wasn't going to talk

about those it's only 4% and Asian is 7% the largest number of blacks or

african-american is located in the south east south central area which is

Louisiana Texas Alabama Mississippi Tennessee Georgia and Florida basically

they all in the south the blacks yes I would say you heard and I'm sure you

hear of it there is a shortage there's a shortage of Nursing of nurses well let

me tell you more about that I'm not trying to discourage anyone but here's

the fact there is a shortage of African American getting in the nursing program

you heard it from me when I went to Bucks County College and I look at that

wall they got a wall when you go up to the nursing department and I look at all

the students that graduate and I see like maybe one and that was in the

current year of 90 they starts wine or - I see sprinkle in so that tells me that

nursing school is not diverse they're not diverse and I've never had a class

that talked about cultural diversity so trying to get into the nursing program

and I said like I said I'm not here to discourage you but you will be the first

to be turned away and I tell you why

when they are doing their they're looking for prospects see you're up

against first of all most african-american schools don't kind of

they don't what I want to say they don't give us the tool that we need to succeed

basically in other words in a majority of the white school those students are

prepared a chemistry they know about biology they start young and they just

be writing good paragraph and they speak good in English and Dada Dada so when

they sit there for the test and it's basically a general test they're gonna

ace it we're so if you up against students like

those and I don't think that okay I'm trying to say I don't think that the

school is looking at the color of our skin when they determine who gets in the

program I'm trying to say that what they're doing is this one is did um she

had activity in school she was a cheerleader all A's um she's good her

paragraph is 100% and grades and stuff things that little minor detail that

would hinder an african-american child to get in the program and zoom in the

whites so I feel like the nursing school is not diverse enough this only saw an

amount of black will get in and majority if you go into a program and see a lot

of african-american and you see like maybe 30 african-american students and

sixty you're going to be weed out and before the program is ended towards

the end you might see two or three that really make the program and it got to be

you got to be determined that have the mentality like me I don't care what

happened I am going to be a nurse I am going to be an RN you got to have that

focus whatever goes on at home you got to be oblivious and just continue to

study because it's going to be a rocky road for you and I'm not singling out

it's because there's racism or anything is just that's how it is the mentality

is a nurse is considered white when I was gonna be a RN it was okay when I was

the LPN but when I became when I wanted to become an RN in a couple of

Caucasians supervisor they were starting to discourage me but little did they

know don't ever discourage Patrice because

once you tell me I can't and I'm going back in question why can't I so it's

like a challenge for me to keep going and I did and I continued and I became

an RN so I'm not here to discourage I just wanted to see I starts talk about

this very clearly what I was gonna say it's just see mind-boggling how's

society how they still think but then again that's the reasons for why you've

seen an influx of african-americans coming into the field and the reason why

you are not seeing enough whites but now they're back they're back they're coming

back they need to feed their family the husband lost the job we need to do

something so now pulling out that degree taking a refresher course and coming

back and there will better they'll probably quicker to get the job and

that's why yours on the sidelines waiting for a job PR in

because they gonna want day shifts because they want to be home with the

kids you're gonna be off for night shift I said it and I'm not taking it back I

don't want to end this video without letting you know why is diversity is

very important in nursing we need to have a diverse set of nurses from all

culture because when you're dealing with patients you're not only dealing with

Caucasian patient you're dealing with african-american yudina

dealing with patient from spanish-speaking patient you're dealing

with all sorts of patient all over culturally diverse you need to be able

to communicate with them and when I say communicate with them not the language

wise you may not be able to speak Spanish although some Hospital depends

on the area would like for you to have a Spanish background I took Spanish but

I've never you know utilized it that much so I need to brush up on that but

anyway you need to know that how to take care your Indian patient how to take

care your Asian patient some Asian patient they won't tell you when they're

in pain and Mexican or Spanish speaking patient the family is very much involved

that means you might go into the patient room and it's hard for you to get to

your patient because it's like 20 or 30 people there to support them so you need

to know the cultural diversity how to you know who's the patriarch and the

matriarch and the family just know things that cultural the tips that will

you know part of surviving in nursing but that's

the deal with that's the deal with being diverse anyway a lot of nursing school

now are trying to get on the bandwagon and be more diverse so I'm getting

involved involving enrolling nurses from all over and they're doing like maybe

they have scholarship you heard of you take advantage of that so I don't want

to leave you thinking that oh you're never gonna get into nursing school

because you're black or because you're for different race and it's only closed

off and it's only for whites no you will get in it may take some time you know

what don't always look at I'm not there I'm not getting there because it's the

color of my skin sometimes it's not that look at for me personally I had to

because of my background I didn't have the proper school in order the schooling

was there but I would did not take advantage of it I was hanging out in the

street but I did finish high school and so I was limited I had to take remedial

class to get up to the level of college first of all get up to the level of high

school learning to write correct English I'm still a little on the backwards side

speaking it but I had to learn how to write how to pass these chemistry and

medical terminology and be up to the level of college before I got in the

program so I had to take a lot of remedial English a lot of remedial math

a lot of remedial social study everything really it's like starting

over in high school at an older age and once I did and they felt like the school

felt that I capable I was able to transfer into

nursing and that's when I had I was going to be an RN at that time but with

a baby in the stomach I decided I'm gonna be an LPN so I could work so don't

be discouraged the road may seem rocky I want you to know that it's going to be

tough it's never easy nothing is nothing is going to be handed to you in nursing

and if you get an opportunity where the doors came open and you got in you make

it worth your while you keep and stay in and don't let

anyone take that opportunity from you if you like this video please give me a

thumbs up like this video share it and have a wonderful day night in your

country or your state goodbye

Пик Советов 4317 м. Казахстан. - Duration: 5:00.

Behind me is a snowy peak.

This peak of the Soviets, the height of 4317 meters.

There we go from the big Almaty lake.

We go easy. The mood is excellent.

I hope that tomorrow I'll reach the top of the mountain.

This peak is Ozerny 4131 meters.

Behind Ozerny Peak is the border with Kyrgyzstan.

It's hard.

Came okay. Wonderful weather.

Sunny weather, fresh air.

Just awesome.

Internet does not work.

You can not read Facebook. Only nature and you.

Super!

Delicious dinner.

We are going to sleep now.

And tomorrow we will go to the top of the Soviets 4317 meters.

Good night. See you tomorrow.

Slowly we go to the top.

We go normally.

The sun is shining, the weather is excellent.

Everywhere edelweiss. Flowers that grow in the mountains.

Almost reached the top.

It remains to walk 300 meters.

But the last 300 meters are the most difficult.

But while we go well.

Today is the 22nd of July.

We go uphill through the snow.

So in the mountains on top of the snow does not melt.

In the mountains above 4000 meters the snow still lies.

We are at the peak of the Soviets. Hooray!

The height is 4317 meters.

We climbed quickly from the camp.

Wonderful weather. Excellent panoramas around.

There are still people going, but almost everything is at the top.

Everyone will reach the summit. The views are fantastic.

We sit at the peak of the Soviets.

Oxygen is not enough for the brain.

Sugar in the brain a little.

The brain works very badly. You do not even know what to shoot on camera. Feeling like you're drunk.

But this is always at a high altitude.

Nevertheless, around the beauty.

Here you do not need a brain, emotions are needed here.

ASR Monthly Summary - July 2018 - Duration: 1:36.

Well, hello everybody. Here we are at the end of July and we're headed into August,

one of our busiest months of the year. And what I would like to just introduce to you is

something that many of us have been working on over the past few months, which is what we are

going to be calling the Vision Organizer. And what we've done is looked at what we are going

to head towards as 10-year targets, and then in 5 years where we want to be, and look

at 1-year goals. So what I want each employee to do, then, is to have something that we call

"rocks" to help contribute to our 10-year target so everybody knows where we are headed,

and what role they play in that. I'm going to be talking about that more in an in-service

coming soon, but in the meantime, the three main categories that we are going

to be looking at are: Achieving student success targets.

The second area is improving employee experience within ASR.

And the third area is really enhancing our system and processes.

So that's the three areas where we will have our 10-year targets,

then 5-year goals, and our 1-year goals. And then you will have goals

as well to attach to those. So more coming soon. Thank you.

The 'dominant' rookie Giants are grooming — fast - Duration: 6:29.

Saquon Barkley isn't the correct answer. And neither is Will Hernandez.  The question is: Which Giants rookie has received the most first-team reps?  Going back to spring workouts, that title, actually, belongs to B

J. Hill, the defensive lineman from N.C. State who has seamlessly blended in up front in the new-look Giants defense

He's even surprised himself by how fast it happened.  "Yeah, my eyes were like, 'Whoa!' It was a little different," Hill admitted about immediately jumping in with the starters

"I wouldn't say I was nervous, but I was on my toes a little bit like — I don't know how to explain it, it was just a little different

I had to make sure I was on my 'A' game and know what I was doing."  Hill has yet to disappoint, flashing the skills that led the Giants to use their third-round pick on him

Head coach Pat Shurmur recently singled him out, saying "B.J. Hill is coming really fast," when asked about the defensive line in general

In the spring, defensive tackle Damon "Snacks" Harrison — one of the premier run-stuffers in the sport — praised Hill, saying in time he "will be a dominant player in this league

"  "When I saw some of his college film, I knew what kind of guy he was," fellow defensive lineman Dalvin Tomlinson said

"I love how he comes in every day with a positive mindset and wants to get better

"  Hill was a late bloomer, a three-star recruit out of West Stanly High School (Oakboro, N

C.) who was also a running back. N.C. State was one of just three scholarship offers he received, along with North Carolina and East Carolina

But he quickly developed with the Wolfpack, starting five games as a freshman. In four years at N

C. State, the 6-foot-3, 311-pound Hill racked up 183 total tackles and 23.5 for a loss, along with eight sacks, nine passes defensed, one interception, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries

That was in a base 4-3 defense.  With the Giants, Hill will be part of defensive coordinator James Bettcher's aggressive 3-4 scheme that will require the defensive linemen to play the one-gap technique, where players are encouraged to move up the field rather than absorb blockers

In the spring, Bettcher said Hill has the potential to play on all three downs, and that's his mindset, too

"I feel like I'm athletic enough to play on all downs and I bring a lot to the table," Hill said

"That's why I feel like they drafted me. I'm glad I'm here. I'm in a great situation with great players, great coaches and a great organization

"  The Giants will feature a different look up front in Bettcher's defense, with three 300-pounders along the line

Tomlinson loves the new system, saying it relies more on penetration and attacking from the defensive line than last year's edition

And the second-year pro believes the Giants have the talent up front — and the veteran to lead them in Harrison — to execute that aggressive strategy

"We got something special in there," Tomlinson said. "We're all great at stopping the run

When we're all out there together, we communicate real good. We continue to get better each and every day

"With Snacks teaching me and B.J. stuff each and every day, we're always learning something new from him

"  — Additional reporting by Greg Joyce
