Real � And What They Can Do Might Change Everything

When I first heard the term �time crystal,� the science fiction geek in me reached out

to the universe to confirm that something so cool could actually exist.

And the universe responded by bestowing peer-reviewed studies by two different teams of physicists.

I just wanted to know that time crystals were real; I had little concern for what they actually

were or the revolutionary application in which they may play a pivotal role.

As I looked into it, I started seeing phrases like �non-equilibrium state of matter�

and �discrete time-crystalline order in a disordered dipolar many-body system.�

My enthusiasm didn�t wane, but I did find myself frequently sighing and scratching my

head.

The first hurdle I had to overcome was the fact that the two different research teams

had created time crystals using two completely different processes and materials.

The Harvard-based team had used a synthetic diamond to create an artificial lattice.

The Maryland team had used a chain of charged ytterbium ion particles.

Obviously, I had no idea what either of these meant.

I just knew that the end result was a time crystal, which my imagination rendered as

some kind of glistening, iridescent, Escher-like gem hurtling through a wormhole at the speed

of light.

Not quite.

More like a low-energy quantum state that repeats itself in both space and time.

The idea for time crystals was first proposed in 2012 by physicist and Nobel laureate Frank

Wilczek, who spoke theoretically of a space-time, four-dimensional quantum phenomenon that would

break the �time-translation symmetry.� See, there they go again with their arcane

phrases.

According to Wilczek, �The spontaneous formation of a time crystal represents the spontaneous

emergence of a clock.�

Time crystals are an entirely new state of matter that can repeat their atomic structure

in time and maintain oscillation without energy.

This has major implications for the still-nascent field of quantum supercomputing, which many

see as the next generation of computers.

Quantum supercomputers will use the quantum phenomenon of �superposition� in the form

of qubits, rather than the traditional 1�s and 0�s of today�s computers.

Because quantum computers will operate at the atomic level, where particles can exist

in two different places simultaneously, it is believed qubits will be able to function

at an exponentially accelerated rate.

Many scientists believe this will allow complex calculations to be performed thousands, perhaps

millions, of times quicker.

The unique non-equilibrium nature of time crystals could make them an ideal testing

platform for quantum applications.

And this has scientists very excited because quantum supercomputers are the holy grail

for computer scientists right now.

When Time magazine listed nine ways quantum supercomputers will change human life, the

list included everything from safer airplanes and better drugs to discovering alien planets

and hyper-personalized Big Data.

That�s quite a range.

Let�s hope it catapults renewable energy models, as well.

So, do I feel like I understand time crystals?

No, not really.

And, to be honest, researching them has kind of taken the romance out of my imaginary construct.

But someday, when I�m piloting a quantum supercomputer-run dirigible amid the rings

of Saturn, I will look back and thank myself

for the effort.

Penn State Frat hit with 850 Charges in Teen Student's Hazing Death - Duration: 1:51.

For Complex News, I'm Hanuman Welch and this week in white people shouldn't be left unsupervised

news, a Penn State fraternity has been hit with more than 850 charges after a student

died in a hazing incident.

The Beta Theta Pi fraternity and 18 of its brothers were charged Friday in the hazing

death of Timothy Piazza, a 19-year-old Penn State sophomore.

In the wake of his death, the DA has announced more than 850 charges—including involuntary

manslaughter, hazing, assault, and furnishing alcohol to minors—against 18 frat members.

Timothy Piazza, 19, fell down a flight of stairs during a pledging ceremony after going

through what the frat called "the gauntlet."

The "gauntlet" involves forcing pledges to drink 4-5 alcoholic beverages within two

minutes at a series of drinking stations.

The Centre County District Attorney announced the resulting charges Friday.

Piazza died two days after suffering his injuries.

He consumed "a life-threatening amount of alcohol," according to grand jury findings.

"Tim was an incredible young man and an excellent student with very bright promising future

ahead of him," Timothy's father, Jim Piazza, said at a press conference Friday.

In a statement Friday, Beta Theta Pi — which was banned from returning to Penn State — said

the nature of the charges against its members "are incredibly disheartening."

The grand jury concluded that despite noting the severity of Piazza's condition through

the night, the fraternity brothers and pledges did not call the authorities until 12 hours

later.

The Frat also reportedly attempted to cover up their role in Piazza's death by deleting

their online exchanges.

Piazza suffered severe head trauma and compromised brain function, and as a result he experienced

respiratory failure.

He also had a fracture at the base of his skull in addition to traumatic brain injuries.

Buzzfeed has the whole story, including the incredibly troubling text messages between

members of the frat actively looking to cover up Piazza's death including removing evidence

and forcing pledges to keep quiet about the hating incident.

fashion.

It must have been a cold day in Britain when Princess Kate Middleton found that she took

second place to actress Keira Knightley in a recent poll where 600 women in the U.K.

were asked who they believed to be the most stylish pregnant woman in the nation and they

chose Keira Knightly over Princess Kate by six percent.

And while The Duchess is a fashion icon both during pregnancy and when not with child,

it seems the women surveyed were excited about Keira�s fresh, chic pregnancy style enough

so to bump, Princess Kate, who often has women clamoring for anything she wears, down to

second place.

The ladies, whose pregnancies are about one month apart (Kate is due in April, and Keira

in May), have both been quite busy with �their duties.� While Kate Middleton is back to

attending public engagements on behalf of The Royal Family, Keira is busy mingling with

the celebrity crowd during award season.

The fact that Keira Knightly pushed out a member of The Royal Family to take first place

may come as a surprise to many.

Kate takes great pride in the outfits she selects as she knows women consider her a

how he is supposed to look but he does

the graphics this close and then you got

this guy here this guy here is really

cool looking to the guy down so we could

take a look at the Velociraptor the

Velociraptor is like a light blue purple

color

so it is just like Jurassic world block

the Raptors it's got this big like wing

thing here with lots of weapons you got

this song big gun here thing here that

swings out in different direction so the

pieces pop off and you got this weapon

here and then you got this little

missile system on the front here and the

whole thing fits on to the side is a lot

of swords

and it's supposed to swivel it's on like

a ball mount but it have the tendency to

pop off pretty easy once again little

leavers on top to control something is

blooping here Velociraptor has like a

harness or this good like I said some of

these pieces okay so it's actually

better if you put it straight out like

that it seems to be more secure and you

have this cannon that moves up and down

to fire at different directions

oops I guess I spoke too soon kind of a

loose fit there and then I say movement

on this Velociraptor as the other Lego

dinos and then let's take a look at his

master

this is master school I love the armour

on these guys I mean the armor is really

cool so this could help it shield upside

down so this guy is really cool too

he's got apply here and move up and down

how big like clear through so clear

see-through sword that

I mean this guy's got armor of black

Paul oh that's really cool and then you

got this Pteranodon which comes with the

stand and it looks really awesome go

ahead and remove the character we'll

take a look at her in a minute well uh

the trainer Don is really cool rouille

armored the arm the mouth opens up these

two side cannons here fire and they're

on a ball joint so they swivel around

brought like the other one he did not

help together all that securely so it

does have a tendency to pop off easier

to firing cannons here you got some type

of blasters here a seat here with little

handle bars that move up and down firing

here and then you got flames that come

out the back of it so that is a really

cool look and let's go ahead and take a

look at the rider so the rider is a

female she's really cool-looking you

seen the speed build of her cool shield

really awesome like mace type weapon

here which I really like she's got her

ponytail coming out of the back of the

helmet

so overall guys I really like these

necks oh nice

I mean they look really cool uh some of

the armor it has a little hard time

staying on the dinosaurs but it looks

weird

okay so there we got all four let me

know which one of the four is your

favorite and like I said they are very

comparable to the Jurassic world ones

here is the big t-rex from Jurassic

world Lego set here is one of the

velociraptors this would be Velociraptor

glue from the Jurassic world Lego set so

you could see he's like identical to the

Velociraptor there except color and then

he's about the same size as the other

Dilophosaurus and then others like you

have the Lego triceratop between there

and we got some of the bigger Lego ones

ah here's a new one I got a Lego

t-rex and then here is a Lego indominus

rex so those are the big ones

like it says the smaller ones are pretty

much the same size

BEGINNING A STORY - Terrible Writing Advice - Duration: 5:27.

It was the best of opening lines, it was the worst of opening lines.

I have never begun a video with more misgiving.

But that's fine!

Having an effecting opening line is not nearly as important as we think.

It only determines the tone and shapes reader expectation.

But is a good opening line really important?

Nah.

Most audience members have tremendous attention spans and will be willing to give a book hundreds

of pages to become engaging before putting it down.

It is objective fact that all readers have a near infinite attention span especially

for unknown authors.

That makes it a-okay to put no effort into the opening chapters what so ever!

So if the content of the story's beginning is unimportant, what should an author put

there?

I know!

The best thing would be to fill it with massive amounts of exposition!

The reader is going to need to know this stuff anyway so why not front load it into the story?

No need for exciting adventure, intrigue, or interesting characterization when we can

spend pages upon pages of explaining the history protagonist's home town that they will never

return to once they begin their adventure.

Now some say that exposition should be woven seamlessly into the narrative.

By integrating the exposition naturally into the story and spreading it out over the course

of several chapters allows the reader to more easily absorb the information.

However, older works and many classics have used info dumping so that makes it fine for

us to use too!

It's not like modern audiences have higher expectations or a busy modern world full of

things to distract them.

Readers rarely get distracted when reading a bo–

Bored now!

Actually grounding the audience with detailed and critical background information so they

actually know what is going on sounds dull.

Instead we can start our story by introducing the main character.

There is a lot of potential here.

We could start by showing off a core personality trait or defining character moment, but the

really important thing to start with is how they look!

Starting by describing a character's appearance sounds much more exciting than establishing

their motive.

And if a little description is okay, then that makes it fine to go completely overboard,

adding paragraph upon paragraph of character description.

Be sure they have a nearby mirror or pond in order to gaze at their reflection.

I suppose that one could try fleshing out their character in the first chapter.

Be sure to establish their core motive, traits, and sympathetic qualities.

Once the audience identifies with the character introduced in chapter one, then either kill

them off or otherwise reveal that they are merely a minor character that will never be

seen again.

Surprise.

That character was just an extra.

Good thing the reader is invested in their fate now before the intro character is unceremoniously

shoved into obscurity by the real main characters!

That won't leave the audience feeling cheated.

Speaking of feeling cheated, we could start our story with a dream sequence.

Having an abstract dream sequence filled with vague foreshadowing and pretentious symbolism

followed by a character waking up and being introspective will certainly excite the reader

with it's lack of narrative stakes.

Don't know what this mysterious 'symbolism' is?

That's fine.

We can skip the dream sequence and just start the story with the protagonist waking up and

getting ready for their day.

I know that my morning routine is the epitome of excitement.

Still having trouble?

Let's start our story like we start conversations with strangers.

Let's talk about the weather while neglecting to use it to establish a story's tone and

atmosphere!

That won't make a story as forgettable as today's forecast.

Are you a writer who believes they are a film director?

If so, then one can start by describing the landscape.

Gradually move the story's starting scene by zooming the camera until focusing in on

the point of view character.

Who cares that it breaks like nearly every POV rule.

The primarily visual medium of movies should easily translate to written form.

Still not exciting enough?

Is the story not interesting until the middle?

Well just move the middle before the beginning and start the story in medias res.

Anything with a fancy Latin name must be a good idea!

And having an exciting action pact opening will totally justify a later boring info dump

no matter how much it derails the previously established pacing.

In most situations, in medias res can be useful tool for framing the story.

That means that it is perfectly okay to assume the reader will be invested in the main character

without any context.

If moving into the future cant make a story beginning interesting, then maybe starting

with the past will.

That's right.

We need to start with a flashback!

Rather than using that flashback to show a key character moment, let's instead use

it to reference an event that will in no way shape the protagonist's outlook or ever

come up again in the story.

Still not enough?

Let's flashback within a flashback!

That won't be confusing.

Even better, let's start with a prologue before going into a flashback of a flashback

and then jump into in medias res.

Speaking of prologues if one is writing a fantasy novel, then I am pretty sure there

is some kind of law that says you have to write a prologue.

This prologue should take place in the distant past and have little to no direct effect on

the majority of the story with most of the characters and events having long since faded

into history.

Has this endless web of prologues, flashbacks, and in medias res left the audience hopelessly

confused?

Eh, don't worry about it.

Just give them a flow chart or something.

They'll be fine!

so it's lexical Nexo Knight with

Dinosaurs all cheer Oh wouldn't be fun

to figure out how to open this up like

I'm going to need some scissors here

okay so then this is one of them are

this looks like a Velociraptor with

necks tonight and we've got two pieces

of Lego compatible to bag the Lego

compatible pieces okay this one looks

like a red Dilophosaurus with saddle and

Nexo Knight and this also while this has

three tags here and then our next one

would be a trainer Don with the armor

and seats and everything and with this

one you that we also have three bags of

Lego compatible pieces then our final

one is another armored look like

long story so with this one key back

awesome let's go ahead and check these

out if you watch the speed build

ah you can see how all of them came

together but let's go ahead and take a

closer look at these guys because they

are totally awesome okay so they're dyno

mounts look just like the Jurassic world

Lego ones this would be the Jurassic

world Lego Dilophosaurus I'm going to go

ahead and take the character out right

now let's just go ahead and take a look

at the Dino itself so it's really cool

it's got like blasters here that move up

and down like a dual cannon type here

I've got like firing missiles on the

side here the Dilophosaurus is like a

dark maroon type of color save movement

as the Lego one the head will turn all

the way the arms move the legs move so I

really like the dark coloring of it that

makes it look really cool same thing on

this side with the missile the firing

gun that moves up and down that's really

cool and the character that came with it

is awesome also this guy is really evil

looking if you take a look at him he's

got wings they go all the way back and

forth by the way guys if you know uh

this character's name let me know

because I have not actually watched

Mixel nights before

looks really cool I would like to watch

if I just haven't had one really cool

shield beer ah they did a really great

job with these guys sometimes when you

get these knockoff ones they will go

cheap on the figures okay then here you

have another one once again I'm going to

go ahead and take the figure out of

there and some of these parts you like

to use humor to shoot off by themselves

so overall it's decently secure but it's

not 100% sincere it was put it in that

Dilophosaurus but this one is bright red

you got missiles on the side here got

like this missile system here with like

a little arm hook type arm there you got

levers on the back here which coming for

the weapon because the dinos themselves

they're all live creatures so you got

guns here that move click in two

different positions here for firing

same on this side and then you got a
