with the two countries of spain and portugal being on the iberian peninsula
one may ask
what would it be like if these two countries were actually together as one powerful nation
Welcome to ftd facts guys my name is Dave Walpole and today here on the channel we are looking at what it would happen if
you
know spain and portugal actually decided to fuse together becoming one big giant country
now one of the reasons we do this is because here on the channel we love learning about different cultures
Communities and countries from all around the world and by the way if that's your thing well you want to hit the subscribe button because
that's what we do and actually because we had a lot of people watch our portugal video and a lot of people watch our video
on spain we decided for fun what would it happen if they just were you know together
Because it's like one of our series are big what if serious so just for fun guys let's take a look at that and let's
get started oh and before we get started into this video i want to let you guys know that this particular
video has been sponsored by
parts of the caribbean tides of war and i'll get to that at the end of this whole video
Now jumping right into it let's look at the population now for spain according to its last
census they have approximately 46 million three hundred and fifty four thousand three hundred and twenty-one people and
portugal for a modern estimate they have approximately 10 million people three hundred and seventy nine thousand people five hundred and seventy-three
now if we were to combine these two they would actually sit at a total population of 56 million
seven hundred and thirty-four thousand two hundred and twenty six people and because of that they would rank
24th in the world having them sit to be a little bit larger than south africa but not quite the size of italy
and speaking of size let's talk about land size because portugal has
approximately ninety two thousand two hundred and twelve kilometers square spain however is a lot larger with five hundred and five
thousand nine hundred ninety kilometers square giving them a total of five hundred and ninety eight thousand two hundred and two kilometers square
ranking forty-six in the world and this would actually put them just slightly under the ukraine but being larger than
madagascar now for all you people out there in the real world we got a lot of people who are probably watching this that are
From spain and portugal just letting you know we're not going to get into the cultural sort of
assimilations that would happen between the two because that would be really hard to tell but we're just looking at flat numbers now to dive
a little bit deeper let's look at the purchasing power parity these two countries now for spain they have a purchasing power parity of
1.76, nine trillion dollars where portugal has a purchasing power parity gdp of three hundred thirty eight point three two one
billion dollars in total they would have a combined strength of two point one zero
seven trillion dollars making them ranked 14th in the world which would be a jump up for spain because they are currently at
16th in the world and for this let's take a look at imports and exports now some of these are not going to be absolutely
exact as we use ose figures from
2016 and keep in mind guys there's a lot of exports that go back and forth between the two countries so we're gonna try to
put that in there as well and with that in mind
portugal exports about fifty four point seven billion dollars and spain exports two hundred and seventy five billion dollars combined without
subtracting the exports to one another their exports would come in at three hundred and twenty nine point seven billion
dollars which would actually make them ranked
14th in the world beating countries like the united arab emirates but being slightly under
singapore now let's look at the subtractions of the exports between the two countries now
portugal exports about fourteen point six billion dollars to spain and spain
roughly exports twenty point 1 billion dollars to portugal in total that equals about thirty four point seven billion dollars exporting between the two countries
So subtracting that from three hundred twenty nine point seven you would get a total of two hundred and ninety five billion dollars
ranking them actually at
seventeenth in the world but they would be just above india
also just
to mention when it comes to exports these two countries would be really well known for their wine and their port portugal makes amazing port
and yeah spain makes a lot of really good wines
Now let's take a look at a different angle not really
exports and people and all that stuff let's take a look at the military of these two nations and see how much that would have
as one
Now if these two countries did theoretically join they would have a total military
personnel of four hundred and forty three
thousand two hundred people with an active personnel of one hundred and twenty seven thousand six hundred people with the rest being in reserves in
total they would have an aircraft
strength of six hundred and ninety and four hundred and forty combat tanks three thousand five hundred seventy three armored fighting vehicles and
over one hundred
seven navy assets with approximately two aircraft carriers
Seven frigates seven corvettes and five submarines and to go even further let's look at some of their achievements for olympic medals
portugal actually has about
24 overall medals and
Four gold ones where spain has a hundred and fifty four and forty six gold medals in total they would have a combined strength of?
gold medals and total medals of
178 and
fifty gold medals making them ranked at
26 in the world which would also be a step up for spain because they're at 29 as well when it comes to intelligence and
achievements let's look at nobel prizes portugal has about four of them and spain has about seven in total they would have
thirteen nobel prizes in which they would be tied with norway denmark and hungary for the 14th place and last but not least let's look
At one unique fact and that is borders because
for some countries they are separated by either rivers forests or
just, open wide areas like deserts but as for spain and portugal they are considered the longest uninterrupted
border in all of the european union and one of the oldest borders in the entire world
established in
1143 it is over
12,000
13.5, kilometers long and this is known as la raya in spain or la ria in portuguese and one thing that would definitely change along
this border is the town of
olivencia which has actually been a disputed area of these two countries for over 200 years
So there you go guys that is us just taking a look at what would happen if these two countries actually came together
