** Vernersche Fußnote: Strichbuchstaben - Duration: 2:40.

We said that f, th and ch

became the to us unpronounceable sounds b bar, d bar and g bar.

But what exactly are these sounds?

And why did they later become b, d and g?

g bar is a "voiced velar fricative".

We explain exactly what that means in our video about Tolkien's Tengwar,

but said simply, it's a g where you don't lift your Tongue all the way up to the palate,

but only almost, so ::demonstration::

The sound exists in my second native language: Belgian Dutch.

That's why I can pronounce it so effortlessly.

This is different for d bar, the "voiced dental fricative"

I can't pronounce it,

but you know it; It's the th in thing - not in then!

English had two th sounds.

A voiced one, where the vocal chords vibrate,

and a voiceless one, where they don't.

d bar is the first one.

b bar, lastly, is the "voiced bilabial fricative".

It's like a (German) w, but with the lips like for a b.

According to Wikipedia, there are people who colloquially pronounce the b in "aber" like that.

So not "aber", but about ::attempt to say aƀa::

Now that we know, what the sounds are,

It's easy to understand how they could turn into b, d, and g.

Our modern g is a "voiced velar plosive".

The name alone tells us that the difference is small.

You just lift the tongue all the way up to the palate, instead of almost.

The same happens between b bar and b. b is a "voiced bilabial plosive".

The vocal chords are vibrating already; the lips are held the right way;

The difference is that for a fricative you close the mouth all the way, instead of almost.

This explains why b bar appears colloquially in "aber".

For an a you open the mouth all the way.

For the b you have to close it all the way, and then there's another a,

because you pronounce the "er" like an a.

So if you start pronouncing the second a before the b has finished,

you don't close the mouth all the way, and you get a b bar: aƀa.

With d lastly, the situation is a bit different.

It's similar to d bar,

which is why native German speakers use it to replace th when speaking English.

but the difference is bigger than was the case for b and g.

d is a "voiced alveolar plosive".

So again it's a plosive instead of a fricative - you close the mouth totally, instead of almost -

but you also put the tongue a bit further back,

not against the teeth, but against the alveolar ridge, the bone just behind the teeth.

It's just a d.

* Vernersche Fußnote: Wann welche Lautverschiebung? - Duration: 2:44.

Of course it's also possible,

that this extra sound shift happened before the Germanic sound shift.

In that case, p, t, and k became some unknown transitional sounds,

(and s became z), if the previous syllable was unstressed.

Those transitional sounds would then have been affected by the Germanic sound shift,

becoming b bar, d bar, and g bar.

In both cases, further language evolution is identical.

In both cases, the same starting sounds would have turned into the same resulting sounds.

So the result cannot tell us which one is true;

For that we need further evidence.

Evidence for the classical order, is that f, th, ch and s are all pretty similar.

They are "voiceless fricatives", which only differ through the place of articulation.

In the alternate order, Verner's law would have affected very different sounds:

p, t, and k on the one hand, and on the other s.

However, there is historical evidence for the alternate order.

For example, Caesar gives us the name of the modern river Waal as "Vacalus".

Tacitus, 150 later, gives it as "Vahalem".

So the name seems to have been affected by the Germanic sound shift,

which turned k into ch, and later into h.

But that would mean that the Germanic sound shift happened around the year 0,

and Verner's law even later, around 100-200 a.d.

But by then, proto-Germanic had spread across a fairly large area.

Especially East Germanic, i.e. the Goths, had already reached modern day Belarus.

It seems unlikely that a sound shift would penetrate all dialects in such a large area.

The alternate order would solve this problem.

However, such a late date for the germanic sound shift is not generally accepted.

A city, founded around 50 a.d. in a Germanic area, called Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium

became modern day Cologne, not Chologne. So it must have been founded after the Germanic sound shift.

Also, examples like "Vacalus" can be explained.

The Romans probably heard the name from Celts, who didn't have a ch in their language,

and probably replaced it by a k,

the same way modern English people pronounce Loch Ness like Lok Ness.

Additionally, the Romans had no letter for ch.

It's possible that Caesar used a c to represent ch.

We are neither linguists nor historians, so we can't say which possibility is correct.

In the main video we present the classical order,

because as far as we know that one's accepted by the majority of people who are experts.

Hamstring Mobility - Release and Stretch - Duration: 2:19.

Dom McKay musculoskeletal therapist today's video is all about the

hamstrings I'll be teaching you how to deeply release your hamstrings through

the use of a lacrosse ball and also show you some really fantastic stretches to

start getting the length and the dynamic capacity back into your hamstrings to

start working into those hamstrings we're going to use a lacrosse ball so

this is really simple all you do is sit down place the ball under your hamstring

and then just lean forward on it now as you lean into that you start to feel a

stretch in the hamstring as well so what you're trying to do is apply the

pressure of the ball onto the most sore parts of your hamstring so that might be

that lower down closer to the knee or it could be higher up depending on where

you tend to stiffen up you can even grab your toe and apply further pressure by

leaning in on that leg so you can hold these positions that are most painful

for twenty to thirty seconds and I'd suggest spending up to about two minutes

on either hamstring so a great way of stretching the hamstrings is to isolate

them really strongly by placing yourself against a wall so what we do here is we

put our feet a little bit further out from the wall and then we push the butt

into the wall and then stretch our body forward now we try and make sure as we

do this that our knees are locked out so we're not not bending through the knees

which is going to take the slack or put slack into the hamstrings we're going to

keep them on full stretch and then just reach down towards the ground and you

can hold this stretch for a number of minutes if you like

generally I advise a couple of minutes

Keeping the Faith - Dr Lee-Anne Perry (with Donna Lynch) - Duration: 5:25.

Dr Lee-Anne Perry, thank you for joining us.

Could you please tell us about where the Dr Lee-Anne Perry story started?

I was born and grew up in a little place called Point Claire which is on the central coast

of New South Wales. When I was at University as I said I was on a scholarship and I was

on a Commonwealth teaching service scholarship because it paid the most for living away from home.

And one of the provisos of that, was that in your final year you had to do an extended

teaching prac in a Commonwealth Territory. I'll go to the Northern Territory, so I asked

to be placed in an indigenous school. So I was given a placement for that the four to

six weeks I was there and then was appointed to my first teaching role at St Pat's College

in Townsville. So I spent three years at St Pat's, I moved back to Sydney and I obtained

a position at a school called Domremy College. I came back north and went to Corpus Christi

at Nunda. As it turned out - and it was a case of getting a job with one could get a

job in those days, teaching goes in waves, there's often been times when there's been teacher

surpluses and teacher shortages. So I didn't choose those schools for any particular

reason other than I wanted to teach at a school and after my first school I decided

Catholic schools was really where I would prefer to be.

Why?

I have found a whole range of reasons

but probably the biggest was that the tangible experience of working in a faith community.

Do you think all Catholic schools now follow that commitment and still send that message

out to parents of students at Catholic schools?

I believe they do. I've had the opportunity

both when I was in schools myself visiting up the colleagues schools and so on and in

this role visiting lots of different Catholic schools, is that that's a really conscious

part of what Catholic schools do.

Was it a big challenge to move from being a teacher to being a principal?

So when I was appointed to Mount Carmel at Wynnum - which was the first school

I was principal at - I was, as I said still relatively young and so it was a steep learning curve.

But I'd had these wonderful role models before me. As I said all schools I worked out

up until that time had had female leaders or religious women. All different, very, very

different but characterized; one by their obvious faith commitment, by the lived expression of

values, but also by their willingness to take risks, to trust, to give you opportunities.

Speaking of opportunities, going to All Hallows' must have been a wonderful opportunity

that you were offered then.

Absolutely, I mean All Hallows' is an iconic school in Brisbane as well as

in terms of the Catholic school community. So an amazing school with a rich tradition

but a tradition of change and innovation and leadership in the education of young women.

Highlights in your career and highlights in your personal life?

I've been given lots of opportunities through that time, I mean I've worked hard and I've as

I said earlier put my hand up for lots of things. But I've been given opportunities

and have had the opportunity to work with just amazing people.

You know we were blessed to have our son, Gabriel, who is the angel of our life that has to be and

continues to be, one of the greatest gifts I've ever been given, is the privilege of being a parent.

We talked before about the accolades and things that you've received.

Some of the comments that your past students have said about you, it's just like everyone

has just been blown away by you as a teacher, a principal, a friend, a mentor. Some of the

comments: best principal ever, speeches never disappoint, full of humour, fun, impressive,

lucky to have her, her wisdom and we can relate to her.

How does that make you feel?

As I said, it was a privilege to be part of that I mean and that's the the joy that comes from

being in community. I feel really humbled by that.

Alright, keeping the faith in our schools, is that hard?

Well faith is a lived, it's a personal lived experience and

schools are - Catholic schools in particular - called to nurture that faith. It's challenging

I think probably has always been been challenging, but it's particularly challenging in the society

in which we live now. The other really pervasive factor now is we are, I believe, a much

more individualistic society. That's one of the I think the things that schools can offer

is that sense of community. Because you know other influences - social media, traditional

media - really actually emphasized the individual rather than who we are as as part of community.

Does Dr Lee-Anne Perry have a dream or Lee-Anne what would you like to do next?

I would hope I would continue to make a difference, a positive difference.

Well can I just say, I think our Catholic schools are in great hands having you behind that desk.

Thank you, Donna.

And thank you for sharing your story with us.

It's been a delight.

Samsung CHG90 super ultrawide unboxing and test run - Duration: 12:45.

and, the repost time...

[gibberish]

[grunts]

Good day, and welcome, once again

to Jimmy's videos and

this time we have an interesting Samsung

super ultrawide monitor, so, so....

it's a 49".... inch

32:9 screen that is

somewhat different than

your run-of-the-mill 16:9 monitors

or other ultrawide monitors

a different kind of screen

and let's see what it's all about!

firstly, we have the

errrrr

color calibration report

with details about

the monitors color properties as noted during calibration

and we also have an energy certificate

a small box - "qled gaming monitor"

wall mounting bracket

this thingy made out of metal

then we have a bunch of cables

power cord

HDMI cable

DP

DP - DP mini cable and

USB to USB

type..... B cable

then we have a leaflet thingy in russian

which I personally cannot make sense of

driver cd... I mean documentation disc

warranty leaflet thingy

more russian

some other leaflet thingy

more warranty papers

safety instructions.... whatever those are in finnish....

[epiphany] safety! [gibberish] ...instructions!

and finally

the quick setup [struggling with words]..... quick setup guide!

so quick usage glossary for the unit

let's put these disp... uni... hbrtjk bleugh!

cables inside the box for now

and

let's move on to look a bit closer at the monitor's different parts

here we have the... eugh!

here we have a very wide stand

for the monitor

protective plastic back cover panel

some kind of decorative ring thingy

most likely for the back too

and this is probably something for cables?

and here, finally, the monitor base arm

and now we're gonna dig out the monitor itself

like so!

it would probably have been smart to once again use the protective styrofoam....

handling these ultrawide units it's advised to keep

this, this styrofoam under here so that

it supports the weight of the screen

while the stand is being fastened

firstly we'll attach the stand arm

and then the stand base

and as a finishing touch

this decorative circle bezel

here

around the base of the monitor's

stand

there! and now we can try to

get this thing upright! [struggling]

and that's the monitor we unveiled!

and it's really

honestly amazingly wide

the front bezel is really quite thin except at the bottom

the bottom bezel is this....

errrm, should we say

black brushed aluminium

with the SAMSUNG logotype at the very center

to one side you can find the menu buttons

on the underside of the screen

the back side is all black, and

very curved indeed, there's a bit of SAMSUNG detail too

then we have the centerpiece, ummm... center

decorative ring and around it this blueish, a bit reflective and shiny finish

and in the stand we can find this small, small

whatchamacallit, that you can flip down

and use to hang your headphones up nicely behind your screen

so they won't be in the way at any point

or laying on the table but are neatly stored behind your monitor

the stand also features a cable management groove

inside the stand and

allows for tidy cable management

the connectors on the monitor are as follows

power cord, then we have

HDMI, HDMI, Display port

mini display port

then there's

umm, headphones/service

3,5mm minijack

next to that mic in and out

then the

type B USB that enables you to use the monitor as an USB hub if needed

there are two USB connectors here

so I guess we have no other choice than hook this thing up and see how it performs!

and there we have it, set up in front of my face and

it's really

it's really a HECKIN wide screen

I need to confess that upon seeing this unit for the first time I thought it was shopped

but no, it's really

a real thing and, ummm

going trough some specs here

so yes this is the Samsung 49"

inch....

super ultrawide monitor

with aspect ratio 32:9

the resolution is 3840 x 1080

the panel is 144hz

errrrm

the curvature... yes, it's also a curved model

the curvature is 1800R as with most other Samsung monitors

and we've discussed what that means in some previous videos

as this is a gaming unit the response time is quite fast also

only 1 ms

the monitor also features AMD:s freesync

and

the panel is QLED so it features Samsung's quantum dot technology

and supports HDR too

the monitor has the following ergonomic features

adjustable height

oopsie!

and both horizontal

and vertical tilting

at the bottom we can find the power button

and menu navigation knob

firstly we have this general menu

featuring power off

image input and menu

PBP which stands for picture by picture

and that means that you can

connect a secondary device

and use the PBP feature to split the screen down the middle

to display two different inputs

from the different devices

the menu GUI is well, maybe a bit gaming-inspired

here we can find

game menu complete with different picture modes

optimized for high brightness, FPS and RTS games

RPG and AOS

you can also adjust refresh rate

toggle Freesync on and off and

different picture options

brightness and contrast and such

you can also customize the menu itself

under system you can adjust lighting

and turning it on

it activates a light element at the back of the monitor

that illuminates the dark corners of your workspace

the menu also includes f.ex. sound settings, ECO mode

and controlling the USB charging options

for the connectors

and there's also

the information section with data regarding the monitor unit

there are also three quick launch buttons for storing your top setting profiles of choice

and

regarding the 3840 x 1080 in practice

it really means that we have two 1920 x 1080 screens side by side

so you can fit two whole monitor's worth [pointing]

that really helps you visualize just how wide this unit is

and, being marketed to gamers

there are several gaming modes

it's time to tackle some games

and really see how this monitor performs!

aaand in a strategy game like CIV 6

we get lots of additional space at the sides

and the different navigation menus

jump... jump waayyyyy out to the sides

so they don't really interfere with the action in the middle

and, even this CIV glorious tech tree

which is really nice... no, really, it's a monstrosity

even that fits considerably better

you get so much more area here, don't need to scroll *as* much

to the sides

you get quite a better view of it all on this monitor

and then, in this type of FPS game

the field of vision is really considerably wider than on a "normal" 16:9 screen

that would probably cover about this much [gestures]

lets hide for a moment!

...this area right here! [gestures]

so it really makes a difference

with so much more space at the sides

and you can really conveniently see if someone is moving out here

some small baddie

you can spot him quite easily even when there is a lot happening

and in this kind of racing game you also get a considerable edge

using this very wide screen

oopsie

since... GOSHDARNIT

[groaning]

since driving up close to these other cars

yolu can really see all the tight corners and

where your competition is

and look out, well, not in this game - but others less fast-paced ones where you should....

it's good that you can keep an eye out for any competitors

and where they are driving

so you don't bump them off of the road

oh, oh oh oh.....

in 3rd person games the monitor is really useful

because in this type of situation where

you need to be all stealthy and stuff

you cquite easily

with this monitor

because you have all this "extra" space

you can look around really nicely

you can keep an eye on this sneaky fellow

so that's the kind of display this

Samsung 49" super ultrawide is

and this really isn't something you get to see every day

really quite an extraordinary unit and, and....

really, very nice gaming features and

gives quite the nice, new perspective and reach

thanks to it's wide picture

you can really fit a lot of stuff on it at the same time

thanks to the huge resolution

and the refresh rate 144hz too so

the picture is nice and smooth

that's about it for today

we'll be back next time, buh-bye!

Insert video in Bootstrap with embed source code and video tag - Beginners tutorial - Duration: 10:06.

Two ways of inserting videos into your HTML5 and css3 bootstrap responsive website.

This is the thing that we are going to learn in this tutorial so stay tuned.

[Music..]

Hello and welcome to another new episode of learning simplified.

Today we are about to know how to insert videos into your project, and of course this is a

bootstrap responsive one that means we have..

We are allowed to use HTML5 and css3.

There are two ways of inserting videos into your project.

The first one is the conventional where we will be using the iframe class and

the video will be uploaded into YouTube first, from there we will be using the source code,

the embedded code actually; and in the second case, this is practically

an experimental one, we will be trying to insert video that means the video tag which

is used in HTML5.

Now these are the two things that we are going to learn - so let's concentrate into the first

case.

Now if we get back into our project we can see that actually a

separate container has been produced in this purpose and I have used two columns over here,

both of them are consuming six [6] grids each.

And in the first case we have used the common embed response code that

are extensively used in case of bootstrap technique.

Here we have used a div class embed-responsive and

embed-responsive-16by9.

So this is practically a 16:9 aspect ratio, if we want to use a 4:3 aspect ratio, it would

have been 4 by 3.

If we wanted to use a 1: 1 aspect ratio then it would have been 1 by

1.

So these are the things that we need to remember always.

I am using here 16:9 aspect ratio and then we are defining this iframe class.

Here it is, this is the class, embed-responsive-item, I have allowed allowfullscreen

here and the source is this one.

This is practically a little witty thing that we need to improvise here.

This is our channel and here this is the video that we want to use in our project and that

is why I will be opening it into a new tab, I am just pausing it and here in this segment

this is the share button as we can see over here.

Now all we have to do we have to use this embed code and here this

is the source file that we are practically looking for.

All we have to do we have to copy this one.

This is the whole thing that we need to copy and this is going to

be used over here in this segment.

Always remember to use the source code while you are using a YouTube video.

But the first thing is you have to upload the video

into YouTube and then you have to use that embedding code and you have to set those parameters

over here as you can see class embed-responsive-item and you have set

this allowfullscreen mode, and you have declared the source.

So this is the first case that you are aware of.

And in the second case you are using the core HTML5 video tag.

This is the video tag that you have used in case of

an HTML5 page, with this tag practically no external player is required, the browser itself

will play all those videos that will be defined over here and with the

proper parameters it will be executed.

Now we have used this video with controls.

Now if we remove this 'controls', just remove this 'controls', press control + s,

get back to your project and you can see that here is a controlling segment is present.

Now reloading here and we can see that there's no control panel is being

executed here, no control is present over here.

Reload and now you can see that those controls are present there.

On the other hand if we now move this autoplay option, remove this autoplay option and get

back to your project and reload, now we can see that the auto playing

option, the autoplay mode is been disabled.

If you want to see this video all you need to do is you need to click this button and

you can see that the video is now playing inside your browser and everything

is quite alright.

So if you activate this autoplay option again and get back to your project and reload you

can see that the video is now playing, it is getting played

automatically and we don't have to click any button here.

So this is the thing that you have to remember.

In the next case I have said this width to 100%.

That means it will be consuming up all of these grids while being played inside your

browser.

In this case you may have observed that we have used a source src

where I have used the folder, the containing folder that is practically holding all these

videos inside, and the name of the file and the type of the video which is

.MP4.

Now you may see here another thing that I have used the same folder name, same file

name but this time with a different extension name and we have mentioned

a type.

In the first case here I have mentioned that the type is video/MP4, and in the second case

I have mentioned this type as video/webm.

In this days MP4 is good enough to be played across any Browser and it is

now well adopted and well supported by the latest versions of every Browser.

But you need to keep in mind that in some certain cases there are some monitors, there

are some systems or computers those are still using old Browsers and everything in its older

version.

So that is why in older versions this kind of video players

that is this .MP4 those were played by some certain kind of browsers such as mozilla it

supported .MP4, but in case of Safari or in case of some other browsers it

is seen that wabm is the ultimate source player that means this will be the supported file

for those kind of browsers.

So that is why same video it has been converted twice, it has been set to .MP4 version in

the first place and then it had to be placed again it had to be called in

again as a .webm format in the second case in an effort to be supported across all browsers

in their old version format.

So that is why this is a repeatation of the same video twice.

There goes practically the folder that holds all those videos, here, these are the videos

as we can see.

In the first case we have used the embed-responsive method, the common conventional prototype

responsive method and we can see that this is the common

conventional method that is being used all over and in the second case, this is experimental

what you can adopt it if you do not wish to upload your videos into

YouTube then all you need to do you need to call in those video tags inside as you know

that bootstrap is an HTML5 and css3 format supported.

Look into this doctype! declaration.

Here it is, hTML language English and you know that all those things those are being

called like here HTML5 shim or shiv code [hack code]

over here and all those things.

That means it is an HTML5 version supported.

Then I think that there is possibly no problem in executing those videos in this type,

all you need to do you need to call in this video tags over here, you need to define those

controls here and then you need to define the autoplay option whether

you wish to keep some autoplay or not, and in case of responsive I think it will be a

wise thing to use this width to define it as a hundred percent, and then you

need to define the source of this video as we can see and the type of the video, then

you need to define these videos in two different file formats.

Now let's look into the browser and check out our videos that finally those are working

or not.

This is practically of video of ours which will practically be

played back from YouTube, now let's see....

It is now doing quite well over here.

And now let's play it again...

Here is the controls, as you can see, you can maximize, you can restore, and this is

the pause button as you can see.

So we have successfully implemented these two videos inside our bootstrap project and

now let's Press control + shift + m and and see what is

happening inside.

Here it is we can see that all these two things, practically both of them are working well

and there won't be any kind of problem playing this

video is now into your website or into your project.

That's all for today's tutorial.

I hope you have like this tutorial if you have liked it do not hesitate to hit that

Hope to see you guys in next tutorial.

Till then, bye...

Chelsea news: N'Golo Kante predicts more silverware with Danny Drinkwater at Blues

Kante joined Chelsea for £32million a year ago after he starred alongside Drinwkater to help Leicester to the 2015/16 Premier League title.

Drinkwater followed the Frenchman to Stamford Bridge last month in a £35m deal, but the England international is yet to play due to injury.

And after the pair's success at Leicester, Kante is looking forward to winning even more silverware with Drinkwater at Chelsea.

Kante won a second successive Premier League crown under Antonio Conte last season, with the Blues competing in four competitions this term.

"I am pleased for him to come into Chelsea," Kante said.

"We need everyone, especially after our time together in Leicester. I hope it could be something like Leicester or even more, I hope. "We did a special year together in Leicester to win the league.

"I really enjoyed the season that I spent with him and I am happy that he chose to join Chelsea and I am happy to play with him again.

Conte arrived at Chelsea on deadline day having failed to play in Leicester's opening three games due to a thigh injury.

He made Chelsea's bench in the 2-1 win over his former club on Saturday but was ruled out of Tuesday's 6-0 Champions League win over Qarabag with a calf problem.

Spintires: MudRunner - The Ultimate Off-Road Experience - Duration: 1:33.

I'm often asked why I left my home.

Why I took up one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.

I mean, who in their right mind would come all the way out here?

Around here you're tested

constantly fighting the impossible

and every each you climb feels like a mile.

But you've got to push on

persevere

pull out all the stops, bring everything you got.

Your limits must be reached

and then your limits must be broken.

Because out here, even when you triumph

and even when you survive...

as grandma always said :

Trouble never comes alone.

I'm often asked why I left my home.

And I tell them I didn't leave.

I came back.

Why Self-Esteem is Self-Defeating - Duration: 4:54.

I have no self-esteem.

I'm not saying I dislike myself, or that I have a problem with my self-image.

And I don't have low self-esteem.

I'm just saying that I have no self-esteem at all.

Why?

For the same reason that I have no pet unicorns.

Self-esteem is a fantasy.

It's a meaningless fabrication that exists only in your imagination.

The dictionary defines "esteem" this way: "To regard with admiration."

Self-esteem, therefore, means to regard yourself with admiration.

But is that how we should see ourselves?

If someone asked you who you admire, would you really want to answer, "Well, I admire myself"?

Would that be a good thing?

I would say no... emphatically.

I was hardly a precocious kid, but I think I realized this "self-esteem" thing was

a racket as far back as junior high.

I remember when the guidance counselor at my school handed out a worksheet and asked

us to "rate" our self-esteem on a scale of 1 to 10.

Meanwhile, kids in China were learning silly things like "math" and "science."

Now we're bankrupt and they own the country.

But at least we all feel pretty good about ourselves.

In any case, there we were, facing the important task of arbitrarily quantifying our egos.

When I asked my teacher why I should have high self-esteem, she said, "Because you're special."

When I asked why I was special, she said, "Because you're you!"

I found this an odd statement at the time, coming as it was from the woman who'd just

given me a D on my last math quiz.

Most of my classmates, though, quickly jotted down nines and tens.

Incidentally, some of them would grow up to be unemployed alcoholics, but I'm guessing

if they could take that test again, they'd score themselves exactly the same.

See, that's the whole point of self-esteem: to be proud of yourself even when there's

no reason to be proud of yourself.

Of course, apologists will claim that self-esteem is simply about confidence,

and that you need confidence to succeed in life.

Okay.

But if self-esteem is simply about confidence, then why don't we just call it "confidence"?

Because confidence must be earned.

A student is confident about doing well on a test if he studies for it.

An athlete is confident on the field if he practices.

A singer is confident in her abilities if she, in fact, has abilities.

Self-esteem, on the other hand, can be defined as "unearned confidence."

The person with "high self-esteem" (also known as a "narcissist") feels good about

himself on the basis of nothing.

We may ask him: "Why do you esteem yourself?"

And his learned response will be: "Because I'm me."

Like a modern day Narcissus, he can't see the world outside the window because he's

too busy whispering sweet nothings to his reflection in the glass.

In a saner, less confused time, people saw it the opposite way.

It didn't matter how you felt about yourself; it mattered what you did.

Funny – that's what my parents taught me.

I remember one time explaining very carefully to my dad that he couldn't expect me to

do my math assignment because math made me feel bad about myself.

In return, he suggested that maybe I should study more and then math wouldn't make me

feel so bad.

"But in the meantime," he said, "it doesn't matter how you feel.

Do your homework."

It doesn't matter how I feel?

What a scandalous notion.

I probably should have called social services.

If this self-esteem thing was just another benign form of entertainment,

we could just laugh it off.

But it's become a serious problem because this "I'm special," "love yourself,"

"you get points for breathing" dogma taints everything it touches.

It equips you for nothing.

It won't help you at school; it will stifle your career ambitions; and it will certainly

wreak havoc on your relationships.

Sure, insecurity and self-doubt can also be defeating, but at least there's a chance

that they might drive you to be better.

Self-esteem actually prevents improvement, because you can only improve if you first

acknowledge what you're not good at.

But that process might take a toll on your self-esteem, so many people avoid it.

I'm not saying that you should hate yourself, and I'm not saying that you should have

low self-esteem.

I'm saying have no self-esteem ¬– as in, stop thinking about it.

Period.

Do good things with your life and you'll have all the esteem you'll ever need.

First impressions of San Francisco - Duration: 1:22.

well I made it to San Francisco arrived very late last night staying in a very

sketchy neighborhood right in the center in kind of like the Central East kind

of Bay Area crackheads everywhere full of hobos just like ...

laughing at you and kind of pointing and like shaking it's not like I've not seen

homeless people before but I've never seen so many in such a small area I

genuinely haven't ever seen so many hobo... like walking around with their trolleys

like it was like that scene out of home alone 2 - I think it is where they're all

kind of pointing out like zombies I thought I was in episode of The Walking

Dead actually to be honest I'm gonna be honest San Francisco is a dump

first impressions this place is a dump it's like oh it's just gray and like

everything's dirty the water I can't even swim in it's cold up here it's very

grey it's a lot more cloudy than it was in LA

that's a rhyme anyway I made it here I've got one day left I fly back to New

York tomorrow morning so I'm gonna try and see as much as I can of this city

San Francisco before I head back to NY
