We're here in Cape Cod Canal
and today we're fishing with a wonderful family
a family of ten,
Mr. Walt, we met him on the rock,
and um, he's got his whole family on the rocks
all fishing and I think it's so cool to see.
[Man:] Ah ha ha!
Leave your line, boy, leave your line, leave line, leave line!
Pop the reel, man!
[Erin:] Open it up,
open it up.
[Mr. Walt:] We're all open here, buddy, don't worry.
We've got slack lines here.
[Brendon:] My spool's open.
[Erin:] This guy is stressed out.
He's got two lures stuck on his line, [Man yelling] Pop the reel!
and probably the biggest fish of his life.
[Man] Pop the reel!
[all laughing and whooping]
[We've got her!]
[Good job my man!]
[Alright, good job!]
Good job. Wow, man!
[Brendon:] I was so worried that I would, uh,
like, be the reason he lost that fish. [Erin:] I know, my heart was racing.
I was like, I really can't mess this guy up.
[Erin:] In a way, it's kind of like all three of you caught the fish.
[Brendon:] Huh?
[Erin:] I said, in a way it's kind of like all three of you... [Brendon:] Yeah...
[Man:] Cast first,
you second,
I'm third,
he's fourth.
[Brendon:] Ok. [Man:] One, two, three, four.
[B:] He's first, second, third, fourth. [Man:] Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[Man:] Together,
together, together.
[B:] Together.
I see.
[Erin:] How's it feel?
[B:] Small.
[E:] Alright! [B:] That's one.
Tiny little one.
That's my first one from the canal.
Baby.
Way too small, let's let him go. [E:] Yeah.
I didn't even feel that one hit.
[E:] Really?
Yeah.
So we're here in cape Cod Canal,
as you guys may have seen already,
um,
first few days we were focusing on scup and other smaller fish,
um, and my Dad just left, not long ago, so I'm really going to start targeting some stripers
because that's a little too intense for him,
so they left,
we're still here,
and uh, what we're really doing here is learning.
This is not--
you know, you see a lot of videos online of the Cape Cod Canal
and how big stripers come out of here--that's not a lie,
um, the part that you don't see is all the hours that go into actually, you know, getting the fish,
um, it takes work, it takes patience, it takes time,
I talked to people here, like, this is their twelfth time here,
uh, my friend, Martin,
it's his 12th time here and he says he's just starting to piece it together,
okay, so I'm not feeling so bad that I haven't been catching too many stripers,
I caught my--I caught--
I'm happy with how many I caught already. [Erin:] Yeah.
So...
Hopefully you guys can watch our journey,
learn a thing or two,
um, I'm going to try and teach you guys the things that I was wondering before I came here,
incase you're interested in coming,
um, first off,
this lure.
The 5 1/2 oz mackerel color
or white colored
Get one of those, actually get multiple of those,
look at this big old jig head.
5 oz.
5 oz. is what you need to use here.
5 1/2 actually,
the canal is pretty deep,
the bottom has a lot of rocks in it,
and um, what you need to do is basically get it to the bottom,
where all the rocks are,
because that's where the rockfish are,
get on the bottom,
start bouncing it back,
the important part is to hit the bottom,
easier said than done,
because you've gotta really feel the weight the whole time it's going down,
probably around 30 ft. out there,
um, anyways, this is supposed to replicate the mackerel that are running around in here,
the striped bass are in here feeding on mackerel.
this is the classic bait to go to in Cape Cod.
[Erin laughing]
[Erin:] Yeah!
[Brendon] I'm sorry? [Mother:] Philip has one on.
[Brendon:] Oh, okay!
[Erin:] Ooh, what happened?
[B:] Did somebody pop him?
[Erin:] Yeah...
He lost it.
[B:] He lost it?
Dang.
Was it a sizable?
[Mr. Walt:] You're not heading out, are ya?
[B:] Not yet.
[W:] Good.
[B:] Can I ask you for some tips? For the camera? [W:] Yeah.
Yeah.
[W:] Boy, I'll tell ya, once the fish are in here, that's what you wanna throw,
[B:] I've got one, [W:] Absolutely.
[B:] I've got two dark ones, [W:] Yup, perfect, yup,
[W:] Yup, yup, yup, [B:] I've got,
[W:] Yup, throw that right now, this is a good one to throw now, [B:] Another one, right there,
[W:] Yup, the white ones you have, this will all be perfect, yup,
yeah, you've got a perfect box, this is great.
[Mother:] Where are you guys from?
[Erin:] Maryland.
[Mother:] Oh, okay!
[B:] Why didn't you share with me? I didn't catch anything.
[Huh?]
[all laughing] [B:] You could have shared that with me, I didn't catch anything!
[laughing]
[Mother:] Let him have the tail.
[Rachel:] Give him the tail.
[all laughing] [B:] I'll take the tail.
[Just kidding]
[B:] Mine was like this big.
Yours would have eaten mine alive.
[laughing]
So I have to ask, how did you all learn to fish...?
Like,
the Cape? Like,
I'm imagining myself with ten kids,
and me trying to teach ten kids how to fish and work as a team,
how was that proccess?
[Ruth:] Our Dad would go and talk to people
and ask lots of questions,
and we spent more time at the tackle shops just talking to people who are catching fish
and my Dad asks a lot of questions and we all just listen and listen,
we watched guys that knew how to cast and just mimicked them,
and you know, got that whole kind of thing,
our Dad's really good at just watching people and being able to turn around and do it and teach others.
[Philip:] That's a tip I have, is uh, practice good fishing etiquette,
because, yeah, you can really mess up someone else's fishing.
[B:] Right, some people just aren't mindful of [E:] That's a really good...
the other people around them and they mess up the lines
[Yeah] It's just, that's how you start problems, when you're, when you're
when you're there and you're being mindful of each other and you're talking to them and you're, you know,
warning them, "oh my line is crossed, "
you know, even just saying "I'm sorry, my line's crossed, I'm going to get that quickly," [Yeah]
That
That, rather than saying nothing and just, just being quiet,
[all laughing] [Yeah]
It's better to announce it than... [Ruth] Yeah, it expels the, uh,
I don't know, the annoyance for the other person, like you're crossing or something. [B] Yeah.
[Mother:] Yeah, there's a whole rhythm to how to fish the Canal,
and anywhere, you have to watch the people on your left and right, know when they're casting to know when you can cast,
and you kind of go together,
[Ruth:] Another tip is don't be discouraged at bad casting at the beginning,
because my very first fish,
I messed up, I flinged it out there but the bail flipped
halfway through, so it just plunked,
10 feet off the shore,
and I'm just like, [groan]. [B] In front of everyone. [M] Yeah.
[R] and I was just like, yeah, that's another thing,
don't be mindful of what other people are thinking,
just focus on one thing: learning how to do it and casting and casting,
anyways, I casted it,
it plunked,
I was getting discouraged,
and I was like, "well, thank you anyways, Lord,"
and all of a sudden- wham- I got my first fish. [B] Wow!
It was just right there, I just started reeling in slightly and it just--
I landed it and everything and it was a lot of fun.
So yeah. [Mother] A lot of fish have been caught
just as you're going in, right at the shore,
so kids can do it, that's the only way I can do it because I cannot get it way out there
[B] Yeah, you can't heave it out there. [M:] and I cannot bottom bounce, I lose every setup.
[Uh huh] But I just topwater and they'll strike right by the shore.
[Erin:] So any tips on, on how you caught this?
[Ruth:] Yes, I was jigging the bottom, and
I bounced it along the bottom,
and then as I was bringing it in, that's when--
they like to lie along the edge of the shore,
so this one just took it and
it was a great fight.
So yeah, be patient at the end,
don't reel in too fast.
[Erin:] That's a good tip.
Patience.
[Erin:] Everyone's watching all the fish bust out here, and then one right here--uh oh! [B] Careful!
[Brendon] That was fun. It was nice to meet you guys.
[Philip:] Yeah, that was great.
[B] You let us fish with the whole family and that was nice.
[Philip:] Yup.
Alright, this concludes our trip,
I learned a lot by coming here,
and this is my first of many trips
to Cape Cod
yeah, I feel like this whole trip was just one huge learning experience
and that's just going to continue to happen at every place we go,
and, I want you guys to remember all of our tips here,
um, one: you've got to be respectful of the people around you,
two: be observant,
three: talk to people, find insight, see what's up,
four: keep calm, keep determined,
don't get frustrated.
Remember, you're out here to have fun,
you don't need--
I didn't end up hitting one of those big ones
but I learned how to do it.
and I saw what gear that people are using.
Just like Cape Hatteras,
our first time there, we saw it happen,
now I'm smarter,
I'm wiser, I can go back,
and maybe have a better shot next time.
I encourage anyone who is thinking about doing this to reach out to us

we've got an 8 hour drive back to Maryland,
I think that's like, minimum.
i think there's going to be traffic in Connecticut,
um,
I'm not looking forward to that.
I've been barely getting any sleep this whole trip.
[Erin:] It'll be okay.
[B] I just can't wait to get back home
to the dogs
the bed
and
a whole lot of work! [laughing]
[groaning]
[E] Okay.
[E] You okay? [B] Bye, everyone--
I'm hooked.
[E] Okay, say bye-bye. [B] Bye, everyone.
