here at the usual practice field
we will continue our freestyle howto series
our first actual flight
all of you who have been watching, should already be familiar with your rates from your hours and hours of simulator practice
if this is the first time you are viewing my videos
this is a series of videos and i would recommend you start from the first episode to get a better understanding of fpv freestyle
today we will talk about
split-s
today we have a guest, tagcopter
good morning
can you hold the camera
it's a trick to change direction
you roll 180 degrees
then flip 180 degrees, and exit your opposite way
it's a maneuver from aircrafts that needed to turn wide to turn 180, usually without rudder
allowed them to change direction quickly
with a multicopter you can quickly turn anyways
but doing a split-s turn will make it look cool and therefore we incorporate them into flight
we will try to split-s over that yellow bench
it's often done around trees
you go over the tree inverted and pitch to smoothly exit at the bottom of the tree
but it's winter time now and all the trees have no leaves so we will compensate
tagcopter, do you keep anything in mind when you do a split-s?
i try to make the first roll 180 snappy and stop precisely
yes, that is important
i also think it looks cool when it stops precisely at inverted position
also to practice right and left
do them in both direction
with a balanced out skill
is a thing i do not do
oh, you don't (lol)
well, today we can practice
i have said in the past episode, but with any freestyle trick you should practice both directions
right left front back
this will give you more variations to your footage
so the audience won't be saying, "this guy is always turning right"
let's try to avoid that when we fly
some things i try to keep in mind
i also think entering the move with a precise and snappy roll is nice
if you slowly turn into it, it kinda makes it look like a corkscrew turn
i think dynamic moves makes it more freestylish
also always keep the target in frame
say you are going to split-s this bench
if you roll here, your footage consists of this area here which shows nothing
when you do it, try to roll before the target to get it in frame
then you fly over with your momentum
as you go over pitch to keep the target in frame
you always want something in frame instead of just the sky
which will make it boring and the audience will lose orientation easier
so always try to keep something in your frame
so you roll in front of the target
yeah, as you aproach
this is not only for split-s, but in freestyle flying in general
footage that often "feel good" are those when you are not using throttle in my opinion
like when you are gliding in momentum
another example is when you dive a building
you go along side a wall and just fall
you are not using throttle
but looks good when watching
your props are also in idle
so no way your quad is going to vibrate
so you also get steady footage
also any move that throws your quad results in interesting footage
so when you split-s
you approach the target and throttle up before you reach the target
then use that momentum to roll and glide over the target
no throttle here when you go over the target
then slowly pitch to change direction
and fly around your target
one thing you want to be careful about when you pitch around the target
don't just pitch 180 in one position, resulting in a vertical descent
at first you will do this
but there is two problems to this
when you do a vertical descent
as you go down, you will throttle up to avoid crashing into the ground
as you throttle up you create air flow beneath you
then your craft will go into that air you just created
which is turbulent air which will cause prop wash
that's one thing. the other is if you go straight down then go forward
makes the footage boring
you want to create a nice arc
then you kind of estimate a line which goes underneath your target
before you see through what you are going under, you enter in
then when you see the view underneath, you are already exiting out
which thrills the audience more
let's try to keep those things in mind and split-s that yellow bench
i will try to demonstrate the bad and the good
so, tagcopter, you use the thumb style
nice
opposite side?
still same, my usual side
that would be your right roll
i think mode 2 users tend to do this side more
since it's easier to pull than push on the sticks
this is my weak side
i see, you gone way off
tag, what is your roll rate
1000deg/sec
that was a "flick" lol
maybe we can try to arch into the target more
you are not to a point where you get prop wash, but still descending down straight
try to do like a half circle around the target
kinda hard
yeah, that is the difficult part
it is scary because you feel you are going to hit it
good! that one was a good one
also, i try to keep close with the target
that's kind of it. i don't have much variation
yeah, split-s is a simple maneuver so
some pilots put yaw into it
yaw?
putting yaw give a little twist to it
taking off
throw your quad before
so bad example, you descent until you fully see what you are going through
then you go through, which isn't do dynamic
try to arc into it, before you see your exit
this will avoid prop wash also
this will definitely cause prop wash
another bad example
another bad example
well, it's not that it's "bad"
this will be your starting line
throttle up here
get momentum
glide inverted for a bit
so you throw it over it
throw it in your approach, keep yellow roof in your target
start applying your pitch as you go past the roof
so here is my weak side
this is your end result, right?
yeah, you should work your way up to it
first, you need to get your momentum
practice throwing your quad
you also have to get used to being inverted
you have to keep the object in target while being inverted. i think at first this will be hard
how much your quad has momentum according to throttle punches
will depend on your thrust power and weight
you have to know your quad characteristics
also your roll rates
yeah
well, i hope you all have that down on the simulator
this is how much momentum it's got
your quad will glide most in it's horizontal position
hard to explain in the footage
what?!
why?
it didn't failsafe
why?
i think one of the esc is broken
this motor is not spinning
esc led is not on
it's not like you did anything
yeah
scary
some quad trouble. i think it's been like 100 years since my last KISS ESC failure
bit surprised
so i will use my FlightOne setup
check this out
safety mode
oops
i forgot to tighten props lol
this is not a skit lol
let's tighten these props and try again
okay props tightened
with FlightOne's safety mode
before you throttle up, PID is not activated
in safety mode, your props won't hurt you either
you can stick your fingers and props will stop
you can even put it in your face. but i won't demonstrate that
let's continue
after i have told you all the FlightOne goodness
there's sand stuck in my gimbals! it's all twitchy
ohhh
i threw some new settings in this build
i changed some filter settings
making weird sounds
oh well
when learning split-s for the first time, before you use an object
familiarize yourself with the roll and pitch stick commands
roll
pitch down
roll and pitch down
this is your basic split-s commands
make sure you are comfortable doing this in open air
then do it over objects
throttle up here and glide
gently pitch through the object
this tune is crap
sorry for the troubles
i wanted to try some new settings, which obviously is not working
and the other one has a broken esc
let's do the variations in another day
we'll do a part two
so this is it for today's split-s howto
see you in the next episode
