SpaceX Rocket Raptor Engine that will zip Elon Musk's Starship to Moon and Mars soon! - Duration: 8:24.

We know what SpaceX's next-generation Starship looks like.

Now we've got a new view of the Raptor engine, that will one day rocket it off our planet.

Elon Musk is cranking up the heat.

On 31st January night, SpaceX founder Elon Musk shared photos of Raptor rocket engines

that recently left the company's factory in Hawthorne, Calif., headed out to be tested

at its facility near McGregor, Texas.

"Preparing to fire the Starship Raptor engine," he said by way of a caption on Twitter.

The photos were interesting, but Musk had additional comments about the engine, that

revealed much about how the company is proceeding with overall design of the vehicle it will

power.

SpaceX's approach seems focused on keeping costs down, and moving as quickly as possible

towards a launch of the Starship spacecraft, and Super Heavy rocket in the early 2020s.

Keeping that in mind, in this video, Engineering Today will discuss about Elon Musk's New Goal:

"Reach the Moon as Fast as Possible" using new Raptor engine.

Why he think the new Raptor engine will be cost effective for Spacex?

So let's get started.

It's a key milestone in the company's efforts to build its most ambitious rocket

to date, designed to use liquid oxygen and methane as a propellant to enable astronauts

to fly to Mars, refuel using harvested resources, and come back.

Musk explained the company is initially designing one 200 metric ton thrust engine for both

the booster and the ship on top, but the next version will split this between vacuum-optimized

version with specific impulse over 380 seconds, and a sea-level version optimised for around

250 tons of thrust.

While the ship will use seven engines, the booster will use a staggering 31 engines — although

Musk admits, the team will "probably fly with fewer initially in case it blows up."

This comment is notable for a couple of reasons.

First of all, the company appears to have decided to streamline the Raptor engine to

a single design, that will power both the rocket at liftoff, and the spaceship in the

upper atmosphere and outer space.

It will take less time to develop, test, and qualify a single engine.

It will also cost less money.

Additionally, Musk notes that the goal is "to reach the Moon as fast as possible."

The company still appears to be focused on lunar orbital flights, such as the dear Moon

project for Japanese businessman Yusaku Maezawa, as the first missions for Starship.

There is an added benefit to this approach: for the next two decades, NASA appears likely

to be highly interested in developing infrastructure near and on the Moon.

By flying Starship on early test flights to the same destination, SpaceX has a far greater

chance to win government contracts for the delivery of cargo, and potentially astronauts

to the Moon.

Heretofore, neither NASA nor the US military has shown much if any interest in SpaceX's

ambitious rocket and spacecraft.

In his series of tweets that night, Musk shared these details that indicate he is intent on

getting Starship flying as soon as possible.

For example, initial versions of the Super Heavy rocket will likely fly with fewer than

31 engines, and the launch system's reaction control thrusters will have a simpler design.

The engine, first announced in 2008, is designed as an alternative to the Merlin engines used

by the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy.

These older designs use liquid oxygen and rocket propellant as fuel, making them unsuitable

for exploring and refueling.

Musk has spoken before about his goal to set up Raptor propellant plants on other planets,

and transform humanity into a planet-hopping species.

The rocket has undergone several iterations, the most recent sporting a Tintin-inspired

stainless steel design with three fins.

The system is designed to use transpiration cooling to prevent heat damage.

Musk explained that while the material has a number of benefits, he's "confident

that a stainless steel ship will be lighter than advanced aluminum or carbon fiber, because

of strength to weight vs temperature & reduced need for heat shielding," adding that "rocket

mass ratio is about the same for aluminum-lithium vs 301 stainless full hard at cryo, but latter

costs way less, is tougher & doesn't even need paint!"

Musk also noted that the design is important as "the ship must be easy to repair on the

moon and Mars."

These moves indicate that SpaceX and Musk are reacting to external pressures, particularly

of a financial nature.

Aside from the Japanese investor, it has not revealed any customers for Super Heavy and

Starship, so the company is pressing ahead with a build-it-and-they-will-come approach

to users.

To accomplish this, however, it must cut costs elsewhere, as evidenced by the 10 percent

reduction in workforce in January.

Musk reinforced this on a Jan. 30 Tesla investors' call, when he was asked whether recent layoffs

at the automaker and SpaceX indicate a weakening economy.

As part of his answer, Musk noted the need for tightening the belt at SpaceX, as it embarks

upon the high-cost development of the Starship and satellite-internet Starlink projects.

"We have to be super hardcore about it," he said regarding keeping headcounts down.

"SpaceX has two absolutely insane projects that would normally bankrupt a company, Starship

and Starlink, and so SpaceX has to be incredibly spartan with expenditures until these programs

reach fruition."

To keep the pain to a minimum, SpaceX will push those programs to fruition as rapidly

as possible.

If that means the company's "Mars rocket" won't quite be in its final form, or even

going to Mars, trips to the Moon can eventually fund missions to the red planet.

Idealism is great and all, but engineers work best in the real world.

Musk has been openly engaging with SpaceX fans on Twitter.

One asked if he's finding rocket engine design easier or harder over time.

"Well, my past mistakes do seem extremely dumb, especially the ones where I mistakenly

thought I was smart," Musk replied.

Starship is meant to eventually be paired with a Super Heavy rocket, formerly known

as the Big Falcon Rocket (BFR).

As discussed, super Heavy will use up to 31 Raptor engines, though Musk says initial tests

will probably involve fewer engines, "in case it blows up."

Musk envisions a future where Starship is able to carry humans all the way to Mars,

and help establish an outpost on the red planet.

SpaceX suffered a setback in January, when high winds in Texas toppled the nose cone

off the Starship prototype.

Musk said at the time it'd take several weeks to repair the damage.

In the meantime, Musk has dropped insider looks at heat-shield testing, and now the

Raptor preparations, showing that development on Starship is moving ahead at a rapid pace.

SpaceX will need to keep the rocket pedal to the metal, if it wants to make its proposed

2023 date with the moon.

WORLD WAR 3: Trump RIPS UP treaty which could herald return of NUCLEAR MISSILES to Europe

NUCLEAR missiles could be stationed in Europe for the first time since the Cold War after

the US announced it would tear up a landmark treaty.

Washington today revealed it would quit the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF)

a day earlier than planned, once again raising the spectre of nuclear-tipped missiles deployed

on European soil.

The withdrawal comes just days after it emerged the US has begun developing low-yield, "tactical"

nukes following concerns that its existing arsenal of warheads are too big to use.

The 1987 INF was designed to avert nuclear war between the US and Soviet Union by banning

the development, testing or deployment of certain types of short- and intermediate-range

missiles.

Washington and NATO say Russia has been flouting the treaty with its new Novator 9M729 missile

but Moscow insists the weapon is not covered by those banned under the accord.

Last-ditch talks in Beijing yesterday aimed at salvaging the INF failed to reach a breakthrough,

with Russia accusing the US of using the 9M729 as a false pretext to quit the pact and develop

new weapons of its own.

Announcing the US was suspending compliance with the deal and starting the clock on a

180-day exit notice, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo demanded that Moscow destroy its 9M729

missiles.

He said: "If Russia does not return to full and verifiable compliance with the treaty

within this six-month period by verifiably destroying its INF-violating missiles, their

launchers, and associated equipment, the treaty will terminate."

But despite not formally leaving the INF for six months, Washington's suspension of the

treaty means it is now free to start developing new missiles of its own, raising the prospect

they could be deployed in Europe.

Following yesterday's failed talks, US Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International

Security Andrea Thompson said: "We are then also able to conduct the research and development

and work on the systems we haven't been able to use because we've been in compliance with

the treaty.

"Come February 2, this weekend, if the Department of Defence chooses to do that, they'll be

able to do that."

Meanwhile, it emerged this week that the US has begun making a new tactical nuclear warhead

for its Trident missiles.

Washington fears its current arsenal of thermonuclear weapons are too destructive and therefore

ineffective as a deterrent because rivals such as Russia and China may think the US

would never dare use them.

Experts believe the new weapons could be reduced from the current 100 kilotons to just around

five - approximately a third of the force of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima which instantly

killed between 60,000 and 80,000 people.

While Mr Pompeo formally announced its intention to quit the INF today, another US official

added the suspension allows the decision to be "reversible" if Russia complies with

Washington's demands.

The official said if that happens "then the US would unsuspend".

Russia has hit back at America's accusations over the Novator 9M729, dubbed the SSC-8 by

NATO, insisting its range means it is not covered by the treaty.

Moscow has in turn accused President Trump of created a false pretext in order to carry

out his personal desire to pull out of the accord.

Analysts have said the long-running dispute is aggravating the worst US-Russia tensions

since the Cold War ended in 1991 and fear a collapse of the INF Treaty could undermine

other agreements aimed at capping the spread of nuclear weapons.

Andrea Thompson, US under secretary of state for arms control and international security

held last-ditch talks with Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov in Beijing

yesterday ahead of America's ultimatum expiring tomorrow.

However the talks, on the sidelines of a meeting of the US and Russia's fellow UN Security

Council's five permanent members, Britain, France and China, who are all nuclear powers,

broke down.

It significantly raises the likelihood of Europe becoming a nuclear-armed battleground

between America and Russia.

In a Reuters interview, Mrs Thompson said she expected Washington to stop complying

with the treaty as soon as this weekend, a move she said would allow the US military

to immediately begin developing its own longer-range missiles in Europe.

Mrs Thompson said: "We'll be able to suspend our treaty obligations on Feb 2.

"We'll follow all the steps that need to be taken on the treaty to suspend our obligations

with the intent to withdraw."

"We are then also able to conduct the R&D and work on the systems we haven't been able

to use because we've been in compliance with the treaty.

"Come February 2, this weekend, if the Department of Defense chooses to do that, they'll be

able to do that."

The former Colonel added Washington remained open to further talks with Moscow about the

treaty.

However Russia has made it clear its position is unchanged, with a Kremlin spokesman accusing

Washington of being "unwilling to listen to any arguments and to hold substantive negotiations".

Mr Rybakov said: "The United States imposed a 60-day period during which we had to fulfill

their ultimatum.

"I conclude that the United States was not expecting any decision and all this was a

game made to cover their domestic decision to withdraw from the INF Treaty."

America's NATO allies have said they "fully support" America's decision to withdraw from

the INF Treaty.

A statement from the alliance said: "The United States is taking this action in response to

the significant risks to Euro-Atlantic security posed by Russia's covert testing, production,

and fielding of 9M729 ground-launched cruise missile systems.

"Allies fully support this action."
