Welcome back to Sipa's garage.
This time we are going to lift up the old engine from the car and start taking that apart.
Maybe even start building the new engine. Depending how much time this takes.
The car itself looks like at the moment. The reassembly has started.
but for example the doors are missing. Hopefully we can got those installed this time with few helping hands.
Because getting those installed without any help is quite tricky.
The engine already has almost all the accessories taken out.
So only few things needed before we can lift it out.
There!
What?
oh this.. now we are talking.
Guess is this the right one.
This isn't the right.
As you can see everything is just thrown here.
There is some plastic nut left there.
Did I already took back the 10mm.
No you can't do that with fingers.
No
You didn't have enough finger power.
Yeah you were right.
Paavo you haven't fingered enough.
Or too much.
Yeah. My fingers are cramping after the Santa gigs.
Yeah I was just wondering how you did get paid.
Or did you get paid with cash and meat only.
Or depends which kind of meat.
Frozen meat is different than fresh meat.
Not only moose meat.
yeah frozen moose meat.
And some other meat served warm.
Maybe some old canned for you.
No preservatives in that.
Did I leave that 7mm to that side.
Organic meat.
Give that.
This one?
Do we need to take this off.
Yes. That cover is the one that needs to be removed.
The engine corner goes inside there.
That is held by zip-ties.
Yeah it seems.
It doesn't matter. The plastic moves away but that metal cover is in the way.
Hey there is yours.
Yeah you can see why we needed to take that off.
But mine doesn't look this good.
But that is in the way.
So you had that in there?
Yeah I did but when I was lifting the engine, it started to bend the cover so it needed to come out.
Of course it would have come out without removing that but the I would have scratched some other place.
How can we get these out of the way.
Just.. Zip-tie them to the wiper motor.
We don't have extra wiring harness if we destroy this.
No we do have.
m52?
No. We also have m50 one.
What don't we have.
So no pressure.
Yeah.
Are the starter wires taken out?
yes.
good.
Okay so should we get the Valtra and lift that baby up.
We should move this there where we have more room.
Yes. Then we wont hit the ceiling.
This is always some kind of fudging around.
Yeah. That is good.
"Because racecar"
Guess who did that.
That's fancy.
I will go and kick the bumper in pieces from my merc.
Is that ok.
I think so.
Nice to crawl on the ground now when there is snow.
Will it even fit here with the snow blower.
I just was thinking that too.
We should move that backwards little bit.
Hey wait!
So you didn't take that off?
I may have forgot it.
Jesus fuck!
Now!
Hey!
Stop!
This wont work like this.
Shut it down.
We need to tilt that more.
It wont tilt more.
Yeah that's the problem.
umm
We need to do that differently..
ööhh..
What happens if we lower the car.
It will be worse.
Look at..
The gearbox end needs to go lower.
If I go and pull that down.
No this rope is preventing that.
You did put that wrong.
I remembered that it will tilt more.
And I don't want to put it down again.
Yeah it wont go anymore..
well...
hey ratchet strap!
Where are those?
This will slide so I will just put strap here and tighten it.
This is not going to work.
no..
We have reached stalemate now.
It already did some scratches.
Where are those straps?
Lost...
That ratchet will break.
Lift the car please.
Lift the car?
yeah.
Nice scratches you have there.
I know.
You need to move the tractor forwards.
Forward? But you are between.
Yes I am.
i'm currently preserving your precious paint.
Don't move it too much.
Is 1 meter enough?
When you hear pop and air escaping after that, take it little bit back.
Biggest gear in.
Did you previously say that the crawl gear wont go in?
Hey it's that one!
Fuck!
You haven't loosen everything!
Bring the small socket wrench.
That fucking slave cylinder!
No. The ground wire.
For the god's sake.
How many eye pairs you guys need to see that.
No we didn't see that.
How about that slave cylinder?
Yeah that did come off.
Oh fuck.
Don't you worry Petri. I had the same thing but my wire just snapped in two.
Where is the small wrench?
Petri. Are you sure you took everything off the engine?
Fuck you.
Now it should lift without problems.
Hope so.
I remember once when we pulled the speedo cable loose all the way from the instrument cluster while lifting the engine.
yeah I remember.
Move it backwards little bit.
Wait wait wait, no no no!
Wait!
Let's push the car back in.
Do we have paint to put here.
Fuck. Why didn't you pick up all the tools underneath the car before we moved it back.
That would have been good idea.
By the way it felt strange to lift the engine when the car lifts up with it.
Lets put some pallet here for the engine.
Why this wont ever go smoothly.
No matter how many times we do this, we still manage to fuck up something.
... that wont be so warm.
maybe.
I have to by the martelius...
Black satin.
yeah.
And also paint the exhaust housing.
Have you Paavo already honed your new girlfriend?
Have you?
I think he has so small hone that it doesn't do much.
Small hone?
I have the model for finishing touch.
Oh ok. I get it.
You guys from Uusikaupunki are here for vacation with totally different class hones.
Yes we do.
What kind you do have?
Little bit of side profile.
That's not good for the lifters.
It isn't so bad for the old lifters.
No I wont do that.
We don't have new ones for this.
Yeah but.
For what?
To my.
yeah. But I meant mine.
Where is it?
On the table.
The second one also.
This is at wrong angle.
The lifters will drop if I lift this.
Do we lift it now?
Mila be careful. Come here.
Come here all of you. (the dogs)
Hell our cylinders are full of coolant.
To here.
The gasket has stuck to the head really good.
It has got warm.
It is in pieces now.
How does it look.
Fuck. well.
ohh my..
This is metal gasket?
No it isn't
It's normal gasket.
But there is metal in between.
What did you find?
Petri your cylinders are quite polished.
Do you know what caused that?
It had so rich AFR.
As you heard. The engine wasn't in perfect condition anymore.
It looks like there is big step here in the cylinder bore.
Hopefully I can show it better.
Maybe.
There you can see.
See it.
I can feel the step quite clearly.
And the bores are quite polished.
Although you can see still see the nikasil coating.
But for example that on is lot worse.
But but.
Probably this is not caused by too much stress for the nikasil block.
But more likely to be caused by much e85.
For example the cold start was very badly tuned and that caused the engine to be full with ethanol.
Every time the engine had to be cranked long time before start.
And that caused the catch can to be filled with e85 and also the exhaust was filled with ethanol.
And the ethanol will take away the oil film and cause lot of wear on the engine.
This is clearly caused by lack of lubrication because the wear is even.
Not only where all the force is applied.
So lack of lubrication.
But now currently the cold start is tuned correctly so there shouldn't be problem anymore.
But Petri did drive 15 000 km last summer with this.
So that was enough to do damage with poorly tuned cold start.
Seeing this I would say that the nikasil block is still fine to use in boosted engine.
But be careful with your AFR with e85. Don't go too rich.
It will take away the oil film and then wear out the engine.
You can still see the honing in the cylinders so this block should be still fine to use.
But probably we will only use this as table leg.
Good thing we have new block.
With that we have to be more careful with the AFR and make sure that the tune is good.
But now we are going to continue disassemble the engine. Lets see if we can find more damage.
I would guess not because this worked just fine.
Okay. Because the bores were so worn, there is lot of this black debris in the oil pan.
Probably the remains of the nikasil coating.
This kind of black tar.
Quite much of it.
But that has not circulated trough the engine because oil filter will catch this.
We only need to check the oil pump because the filter is after that.
And this stuff may have gone trough it.
So we need to check for damages and is it still in spec.
Or maybe use different pump.
But then during the disassembly we found third interesting thing.
And hopefully you can see it.
The connecting rod has bent.
For comparison I will take straight one from here.
And there is now straight one and the bent on the right.
Should be quite clear.
So.. that's done.
It starts to be quite clear that these thin connecting rods from m52 are not good for boosted engines.
If I remember correctly the engine didn't misfire badly so that must be caused by too much force.
And if I remember correctly, in my engine the bent rod was also one of the middle ones.
So that might mean that the center ones run with bit different AFR.
And that may have caused that.
Something has happened.
But luckily nothing serious happened.
The crank is still fine and that is the critical part we need.
As clutch we had stock one from 328i and also the stock dual mass flywheel.
And the dualmass there is still fine.
It is as bad condition as it was when we installed it.
And this pressure assembly was holding fine.
It did hold even when the engine had almost double the torque than this is meant for.
Lets look at the friction surface.
And nothing there.
The milling marks are still visible.
And no coloring at all. So it hasn't slipped.
So it worked just fine.
I'm oiling everything.
Will the chinese rods and wiseco pistons work together.
Feels firm.
