LIKE THAT.
AND NOW IF IT'S MEN AND WOMEN, MAYBE EMPLOYERS WILL FEEL

NYC Women's March sets more than 400,000 protesters upon Trump Tower - Duration: 5:28.
The streets of President Trump's hometown were steeped in protesters Saturday — the masses set on showing the nation's new commander-in-chief they won't be silent.
More than 400,000 people marched through Midtown to stand in solidarity for women's rights and to let Trump know they want a greater voice for women in political life.
The Women's March on NYC, echoing a larger demonstration in Washington, D.C., and others across the country, began near the UN about 11 a.m. and included a trip to a well-barricaded Trump Tower.
The pulsing throng of protesters, many carrying signs and clad in pink hats, packed 1 Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, in the shadow of another Trump property, as speakers rallied the crowd.
Many in the crowd expressed fear over Trump's vow to repeal the Affordable Care Act and anger over his misogynistic comments about women.
Others said they were challenging the new administration by calling attention to social justice, civil rights and equality.

City First Lady Chirlane McCray, "Sex and the City" actress and activist Cynthia Nixon and actress Helen Mirren, who proudly proclaimed herself as a New Yorker to a loud roar of cheers and whistles, all spoke at the rally. Yoko Ono was also on hand, in a wheelchair.
McCray echoed the promises of her husband, Mayor de Blasio, encouraging New Yorkers to keep their heads up.
"New York City has always been the center of progressive America. And that will never change. New York is the birthplace of the women's movement.
The home of the women's rights movement.
And that will never change," she said. "The home of planned parenthood. And that will never change.
New York is full of women of all ethnicities, all classes, and we refuse to be silent."
She then led the crowd in a chant of "We are the taxpayers! We pay the bills! We are the boss!"
Thunderous cheers rang out as the crowd swelled and spilled north, snaking up Second Ave.

"We are not rolling back the tarp on the progress that we have made," said Nixon. "To every woman here who won't give up, women make the change."
Nixon said the Trump administration "better think twice about messing with women. We will not be silent. We will not just roll over and play dead."
She encouraged demonstrators to take the energy of the day home with them and make a plan and organize.
"Pick one thing you care about the most and get to work," she said. "When women organize, change happens. Women make the change."
In a show of force, the massive crowd grabbed their signs and took off toward Trump's namesake high-rise at Fifth Ave. and between 56th and 57th Sts.

Brandishing posters with messages such as "Women won't back down" and "Less fear more love," the group made their way down to 42nd St. and then up Fifth Ave.
Barricades lined the streets, and traffic was snarled by the sea of humanity.
Mary Ann Duncan, 49, a preschool teacher and the mother of two girls, came from Albany to join the masses.
"It's important to show up and take a stand. There's too much on the line. This is our future," Duncan said.
"He's in the most powerful position in the world. Our freedoms are at stake."
Other marchers said they want to ensure that the Trump administration will not take steps to strip women's health and reproductive rights.

"A lot is at stake," said Jennifer Tavis, 33, a costume designer from Ridgewood, Queens. "There are so many issues to support, but I think we are for fighting (for) reproductive rights, health care and equality. I am fighting for equality to express yourself however you want, and to be treated with respect."
Sen. Chuck Schumer, who spoke at Trump's inauguration in Washington a day earlier, promised to fight on behalf of all Americans.
"Donald Trump isn't going to know what hit him," he said. "I am on your side. The Democrats in the Senate are on your side, and we are not going to stop fighting until we take this country back."
People continued to pour into the march as the afternoon turned to evening. On Second Ave., people remained backed up from 42nd St. up to 51st St.
The crowd was so thick at times that it was nearly at a standstill.

Anne Cunningham, 82, who works with the office of the Manhattan borough president, marched alone with her walker, pumping one fist in the air, saying, "Hey hey, ho ho, Mr. Trump has got to go!"
Cunningham has been an activist since she was teen and a part of many major protest movements.
"I am so impressed with all the young wonderful people out here in the street today. It's like a miracle happening overnight. I think it's wonderful," she said.
"We need to keep our rights and get more rights for women and people in society."
Many marchers were disappointed that the NYPD halted their progress at 55th St. and Fifth Ave., two blocks short of Trump's gilded tower.
A group of demonstrators banged on pots and pans and shouted, "Let us through."
"It's infuriating," said Devin Montalto, 33, a server and preschool teacher from Brooklyn. "We marched all this way, and we're being told to just turn around and leave. It's controlled democracy. We're being controlled."
Still, Montalto acknowledged what the protesters did accomplish.
"We came out in huge masses that no one expected," he said. "It was people all over the world. It was more people than those that went to support the inauguration.
I think everyone spoke with one voice today. I think we moved people. Something big started today."

Sadistic nurse suspected of poisoning more than 100 patients in Ind. hospital gets 360 years for... - Duration: 4:56.
In November 1993, a registered nurse at Vermillion County Hospital in Clinton, Ind., began to worry that there was something terribly wrong in the ICU. Too many patients were dying.
The nurse brought her concerns to hospital officials, who told her that the institution's death review committee would look into it.
More than a year passed before they zeroed in on a possible cause of the increase in mortality — murder.
The killer, who may have snuffed out as many as 130 lives, was walking around the hospital, disguised as an angel of mercy.
Orville Lynn Majors, a licensed practical nurse, joined Vermillion's staff in May 1993. At that time, the 55-bed hospital lost about 25 to 30 patients a year. That number soared to more than 100 in 1994.
Some of the patients had been starting to get better, while others had improved so much that they were preparing to go home. Then, suddenly, they were gone.
Nurses became reluctant to leave their stations, even for a bathroom break. They feared that when they returned the patients in their care would be in crisis — or worse. In one terrible day, three of the four patients in ICU died within an hour.
The staff dubbed it the "lunchtime massacre."
The West Central Community Hospital in Clinton, Ind., formerly known as the Vermillion County Hospital, where Orville Lynn Majors administered lethal injections to patients against doctor's orders.

This went on until March 1995 when Margaret Mershon, 101, came into the hospital for treatment for congestive heart failure, wrote Dan Mitrione in "Cold-Blooded Care."
Mershon's nurse, Dawn Stirek, a staff supervisor, was called away from the ICU to help out with other patients. Mershon was the only ICU patient and was doing well, so Stirek left Majors alone to watch over the elderly woman.
In an hour, Mershon was dead and Stirek couldn't understand what had happened. Despite her age and heart condition, Mershon had been stable, not at risk of dying that day.
Stirek decided to take a close look at the nursing logs. The majority of patients who had died mysteriously had two things in common. They were old and had the same nurse, Majors, on duty at the time of their deaths.
Majors, Stirek discovered, was on the scene 90% of the times patients died for no apparent reason. When he was around, a patient died every 23 hours, compared to 551 hours when he was not.
Later research would reveal that of the 149 patients who died while he worked at the hospital, all but 19 were during Majors' shift.

There was one week in which the death rate went back to the levels they were at before Majors joined the staff. He was on vacation.
It seemed impossible to believe that the big, curly-haired man with the warm, tender touch could be harming people. He was a native in the area, born in 1961, the son of a coal miner. His hometown was Linton, Ind., about 50 miles from the hospital, and his family was well-liked and respected in the community.
As a teen, Majors had taken on the responsibility of caring for his dying grandmother in her last years. That led naturally to a career as a nurse.
People who knew him, including some former patients, said they could not imagine him hurting a flea. When he reassured the relatives of sick people, they had no reason for doubt. Even if they felt uneasy, his take-charge mannerisms made people defer to him.
In one case, a daughter described watching as Majors administered a fatal injection. The daughter, Paula Holdaway, said that Majors kissed her mother, Dorothea Hixon, 80, on the forehead, brushed back her hair and said, "It's all right, punkin. Everything is going to be all right now." A minute later she was dead.
Hixon was in the hospital for a routine procedure, and physically there was no reason for her to die. Records would later show that her doctor had ordered no injection.

Majors was fired and had his nursing license revoked in 1995. He went back to Linton and opened a pet shop.
It would take two and a half years and the exhumation of 15 bodies before the Indiana State Police gathered evidence enough to charge Majors in seven deaths.
The murder weapon had been a common substance — potassium chloride — that is essential in the human body. Doctors use it to treat some heart conditions. In high doses, however, it can stop the heart, and is part of the cocktail of drugs used in executions.
There were scores of possible victims, but investigators zeroed in on seven of the strongest cases to present to a jury. Autopsies of these patients revealed that they had lethal levels of potassium in their bodies.
Police found vials, some empty, of potassium chloride, in Majors' home and in a van he used.
Interviews with other nurses and friends also revealed a darker side to his man with the outwardly warm personality. They told of his money troubles and his hatred of old people, quoting him as saying that they "should be gassed" or "put down."
At the trial in the fall of 1999, Majors' attorney argued that the patients died of natural causes, but the evidence convinced the jury of the defendant's guilt in six cases. In the seventh, they could not agree.
Still, it was enough to put Majors behind bars and to keep him there until he is a very, very old man. His sentence: 360 years, 60 years for each of his victims, to be served consecutively.

THE NUMBERS ARE ACTUALLY A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT WHEN
YOU LOOK AT THE GENERAL MALE POPULATION.
FOR INSTANCE, WHEN IT COMES TO ALL MEN ñ
IN THE UK, WHERE THEY SPECIFICALLY FOCUSED ñ
THEY FOUND THAT ONE FIFTH OF FATHERS THAT THEIR EMPLOYER
WAS UNCIR PATHETIC ABOUT CHILD CARE, EXPECTING NO DECEPTION
TO WORK, WHILE 44% HAD LIED TO THEIR EMPLOYER ABOUT FAMILY
-RELATED RESPONSE ABILITIES THAT GET IN THE WAY OF WORK.
AND THEN IT TURNS OUT, IN TERMS OF WHAT MEN ARE WILLING TO DO,
WHEN IT COMES TO ALL GUYS FROM ACROSS THE BOARD, REGARDLESS OF
AGE, 47% WANT TO DOWNGRADE TO A LESS STRESSFUL JOB, AND A LESS ñ
AND LESS OF A PERCENTAGE ARE WILLING TO TAKE A PAY CUT.
MILLENNIAL MEN I GUESS ARE MORE LIKELY TO NOT BELIEVE IN GENDER
STEREOTYPES, AND GENDER ROLES, BUT EITHER WAY, I THINK THIS IS
GOOD NEWS, BECAUSE IT SHOWS THAT, HEY, IF MEN WANT TO
FOCUS ON HAVING MORE TIME IN THE HOUSE, THEN MAYBE EMPLOYERS
WILL BE MORE WILLING TO LISTEN TO THESE ISSUES.
WOMEN HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE FOR A VERY LONG TIME, AND OBVIOUSLY
THERE HASN'T BEEN MUCH MOVEMENT IN TERMS OF GIVING A MORE
FLEXIBLE HOURS, OR PAID MATERNITY LEAVE, AND THINGS
LIKE THAT.
AND NOW IF IT'S MEN AND WOMEN, MAYBE EMPLOYERS WILL FEEL
THE PRESSURE TO CHANGE THINGS.
AND OF COURSE IT DEPENDS ON WHERE YOU ARE REFERRING TO,
BECAUSE THIS STUDY IS OUT OF THE UK, WHERE YOU AT LEAST GET
SOME MATERNITY LEAVE.
YOU DO.
HERE IN AMERICA THERE'S BEEN NO MOVEMENT AT ALL, SAD DAY FOR
YOU, YOU WERE BORN THE WRONG GENDER, WE'RE GONNA MAKE YOU

I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT SERIOUS RETALIATION LIKE, YOU'RE
FIRED, BUT MAYBE YOU WILL GET THAT PROMOTION BECAUSE YOUR
EMPLOYER WILL BE LIKE, LOOK AT THE SKY, TAKING TIME OFF TO
BE WITH HIS KIDS?
I WANT TO GO GET HER DOESN'T HAVE A LIFE OUTSIDE OF WORK.
THAT SOUNDS LIKE ME.
THAT'S NOT LIKE YOU.
ONLY TWO ñ 8% OF FATHERS WOULD CONSIDER TAKING IT OFF IF THERE
WAS SHARED MATERNITY LEAVE.

BE MORE OF A FOCUS ON LESSER HOURS, BUT MAYBE MORE

I THINK THIS IS A REALLY HARD ISSUE.

Sadistic nurse suspected of poisoning more than 100 patients in Ind. hospital gets 360 years for... - Duration: 4:56.In November 1993, a registered nurse at Vermillion County Hospital in Clinton, Ind., began to worry that there was something terribly wrong in the ICU. Too many patients were dying.
The nurse brought her concerns to hospital officials, who told her that the institution's death review committee would look into it.
More than a year passed before they zeroed in on a possible cause of the increase in mortality — murder.
The killer, who may have snuffed out as many as 130 lives, was walking around the hospital, disguised as an angel of mercy.
Orville Lynn Majors, a licensed practical nurse, joined Vermillion's staff in May 1993. At that time, the 55-bed hospital lost about 25 to 30 patients a year. That number soared to more than 100 in 1994.
Some of the patients had been starting to get better, while others had improved so much that they were preparing to go home. Then, suddenly, they were gone.
Nurses became reluctant to leave their stations, even for a bathroom break. They feared that when they returned the patients in their care would be in crisis — or worse. In one terrible day, three of the four patients in ICU died within an hour.
The staff dubbed it the "lunchtime massacre."
The West Central Community Hospital in Clinton, Ind., formerly known as the Vermillion County Hospital, where Orville Lynn Majors administered lethal injections to patients against doctor's orders.

This went on until March 1995 when Margaret Mershon, 101, came into the hospital for treatment for congestive heart failure, wrote Dan Mitrione in "Cold-Blooded Care."
Mershon's nurse, Dawn Stirek, a staff supervisor, was called away from the ICU to help out with other patients. Mershon was the only ICU patient and was doing well, so Stirek left Majors alone to watch over the elderly woman.
In an hour, Mershon was dead and Stirek couldn't understand what had happened. Despite her age and heart condition, Mershon had been stable, not at risk of dying that day.
Stirek decided to take a close look at the nursing logs. The majority of patients who had died mysteriously had two things in common. They were old and had the same nurse, Majors, on duty at the time of their deaths.
Majors, Stirek discovered, was on the scene 90% of the times patients died for no apparent reason. When he was around, a patient died every 23 hours, compared to 551 hours when he was not.
Later research would reveal that of the 149 patients who died while he worked at the hospital, all but 19 were during Majors' shift.

There was one week in which the death rate went back to the levels they were at before Majors joined the staff. He was on vacation.
It seemed impossible to believe that the big, curly-haired man with the warm, tender touch could be harming people. He was a native in the area, born in 1961, the son of a coal miner. His hometown was Linton, Ind., about 50 miles from the hospital, and his family was well-liked and respected in the community.
As a teen, Majors had taken on the responsibility of caring for his dying grandmother in her last years. That led naturally to a career as a nurse.
People who knew him, including some former patients, said they could not imagine him hurting a flea. When he reassured the relatives of sick people, they had no reason for doubt. Even if they felt uneasy, his take-charge mannerisms made people defer to him.
In one case, a daughter described watching as Majors administered a fatal injection. The daughter, Paula Holdaway, said that Majors kissed her mother, Dorothea Hixon, 80, on the forehead, brushed back her hair and said, "It's all right, punkin. Everything is going to be all right now." A minute later she was dead.
Hixon was in the hospital for a routine procedure, and physically there was no reason for her to die. Records would later show that her doctor had ordered no injection.

Majors was fired and had his nursing license revoked in 1995. He went back to Linton and opened a pet shop.
It would take two and a half years and the exhumation of 15 bodies before the Indiana State Police gathered evidence enough to charge Majors in seven deaths.
The murder weapon had been a common substance — potassium chloride — that is essential in the human body. Doctors use it to treat some heart conditions. In high doses, however, it can stop the heart, and is part of the cocktail of drugs used in executions.
There were scores of possible victims, but investigators zeroed in on seven of the strongest cases to present to a jury. Autopsies of these patients revealed that they had lethal levels of potassium in their bodies.
Police found vials, some empty, of potassium chloride, in Majors' home and in a van he used.
Interviews with other nurses and friends also revealed a darker side to his man with the outwardly warm personality. They told of his money troubles and his hatred of old people, quoting him as saying that they "should be gassed" or "put down."
At the trial in the fall of 1999, Majors' attorney argued that the patients died of natural causes, but the evidence convinced the jury of the defendant's guilt in six cases. In the seventh, they could not agree.
Still, it was enough to put Majors behind bars and to keep him there until he is a very, very old man. His sentence: 360 years, 60 years for each of his victims, to be served consecutively.

NASHVILLE — Actress Ashley Judd recited a poem by a Tennessee teen Saturday at the Women's March on Washington. Judd, a Franklin resident, read a poem by 19-year-old Nina Donovan, also of Franklin. The "Nasty Woman" poem criticizes President Trump and points out inequalities in the United States.
Trump called former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton a "nasty woman" at a presidential debate. "The second (Trump) called Hillary a nasty woman, I said, 'Oh man, I've got to write a nasty woman piece,' " Donovan said. "I reclaimed it."
Donovan, a student at Columbia State Community College, attended the Women's March on Nashville Saturday. At least 15,000 people marched for women's rights and social justice issues.
"I was seeing the physical form of everything I was saying in my poem," Donovan said. "If we keep fighting, we can all be equal one day. It just shows so much hope in this city and this nation."
Judd attended a show where Donovan performed the original "Nasty Woman" piece. Donovan later gave Judd permission to recite the poem at the march. "I am a nasty woman," the poem begins.
"Not as nasty as a man who looks like he bathes in Cheeto dust, a man whose words are a dis to America, Electoral College-sanctioned hate speech contaminating this national anthem," Judd said.
"I'm not as nasty as Confederate flags being tattooed across my city. Maybe the South actually is going to rise again, maybe for some, it never really fell," Judd said."Blacks are still in shackles and graves just for being black. Slavery has been reinterpreted as the prison system, in front of people who see melanin as animal skin.
"I am not as nasty as a swastika painted on a pride flag," she said. "And I didn't know devils could be resurrected. But I feel Hitler in these streets. A mustache traded for a toupee. "I am not as nasty as racism, fraud, conflict of interest, homophobia, sexual assault, transphobia, white supremacy, misogyny, ignorance and white privilege," she said.

Doaa Al Zamel struggled to keep the baby in her hands above the surging waters of the Mediterranean Sea. A few feet away, the man she loved was dying before her eyes.
"Bassem!" the 19-year-old Syrian cried out. "I can't live without you!"
She would need to, if only for the sake of the child. One day earlier, the boat smuggling Doaa, her fiancé and another 500 refugees from Egypt was smashed and sunk by pirates.
Only 100 made it into the sea alive, and now they were dying off. Little Malak's grandfather thrust the small baby into her arms moments before he floated off to his death.
In a scene reminiscent of the movie "Titanic," Doaa felt Bassem's fingers loosen from her grasp as he slipped into the water.
Trapped inside an inflatable ring with the baby, her free hand grabbed air as she lunged for him. Bassem was gone, and she felt her future die with him.
Doaa's incredible fight to live, one of only a few refugees to survive four days in a sea of corpses, is recounted by Melissa Fleming in her moving new book "A Hope More Powerful Than the Sea."

Doaa and her family fled Daraa, a large city in southwest Syria, for Egypt in late 2012. The year before, tanks under the command of President Bashar Assad rolled in to brutally quell the Arab Spring uprising.
Doaa, then 16, was not as reserved as the times required — or as her father demanded. She mouthed off to soldiers, showing such defiance in one confrontation that a bullet whizzed past her ear.
In Egypt, the Al Zamel family settled in Damietta, a city on the Mediterranean coast. They were among the early wave of refugees, before hearts had hardened.
It was there that another refugee, Bassem, declared his love for her. He'd owned a thriving hair salon before joining the Free Syrian Army.
Tortured and jailed for two months, the 28-year-old was driven to flee his country.

Neither of the young lovers saw a future in the newly hostile Egypt. By 2014, refugees were reviled and harassed. Bassem proposed making their way to Sweden, a journey that began with a perilous trip across the sea.
The only thing that truly terrified Doaa was deep water, and she fought him — at first. When the call came in mid-September offering a place on the smugglers' boat, they bought two spots.
The craft was impossibly crowded with more than 500 refugees, each paying $2,500. The huddle of desperate humanity, many of them children, was worth more than a million dollars to the smugglers.
Starvation set in on the fourth day of a scheduled two-day journey. It was then they were told there would only be 19 more hours at sea.
The refugees had only just settled into happy contemplation of a bright future when a small boat pulled alongside theirs.
It was a pirate ship, with one of the men vowing to dispatch "these filthy dogs to the bottom of the sea."

The pirate boat veered round, then came at the refugee boat full speed. When the first collision left the larger boat damaged but afloat, the pirate boat struck again.
Separated from Bassem by the impact, Doaa was trapped under the plastic cover the refugees used as a shield from the elements. Choked for air, she pulled herself through.
Soon, the bodies still under the plastic became motionless. Reaching the boat's edge, she saw a small boy sucked into the propeller blades. The sea was awash in red from all the blood.
Bassem shouted at her, urging Doaa to jump. Hanging from the side of the boat, she froze in terror before finally dropping into the sea she so feared.
As Doaa splashed down, hands tried to pull her under as others, submerged and desperate, fought their way to the surface.
Doaa finally reached Bassem, aloft on a plastic bag of empty water bottles. He snagged a water ring for her. The two clutched hands and floated together.

As many as 100 had survived this far, but the endless, freezing night took its toll. When morning dawned, the dead bodies eddied around her.
And Bassem was obviously losing strength.
He could barely talk, but managed to speak with urgency.
"It was my job to take care of you and I failed," he said, his eyes feverish. "Forgive me before I die, my love."
It was then the fisherman from Gaza begged her to take his 9-month-old granddaughter, Malak, before he swam away to die.
Doaa sang nursery songs to the baby, only to find she had lulled Bassem to sleep. She clapped her hands to rouse him and pleaded with him to stay awake.

But he went limp and slipped away.
If she freed herself from the inflated ring to give chase, she would lose the baby. She could only watch helplessly. The last she saw of her beloved was his dark hair as the water took him.
Doaa screamed once. But then she found a new determination to survive. She had to, for the baby.
Soon, she was cradling another small child.
In the stifling swell of the next day's heat, she watched as a little girl died of convulsions in her father's arms. The mother, who Doaa knew from the boat, swam toward her with 18-month-old Masa in tow.
"Please save our baby," she pleaded. "I won't survive."
The woman swam back to her husband. They wept over their older daughter's body until both went slack, dying before Doaa's eyes.

Doaa, with two babies, was left floating in a sea of corpses.
On the morning of day three, another desperate couple approached with their young son. Doaa laid him on her outstretched legs and kept him aloft for two hours before he shuddered and died.
She couldn't let herself drift off into sleep for fear the babies would drown. But by day four, she was slipping in and out of consciousness as the small ones rested on her chest.
Suddenly, a plane appeared overhead followed by a Japanese cruiser that dropped a lifeboat. It took hours to locate Doaa. She used all her remaining strength to paddle with her one free hand toward their saviors.
Spent beyond measure, she surrendered the babies. Doaa then drew her knees up to push away from rescue. Relieved of her burden, she was free to join Bassem.
The sailors wrestled her onboard. As the cruiser raced toward Greece, Malak died.
In the aftermath, Doaa lived with a generous family in Crete while Mala was soon settled in an orphanage. It was after visiting Masa in October, 2015, that Doaa learned she would be reunited with her family in Sweden.
January found her trudging through snow to her family's new Östersund home in the middle of Sweden.
Doaa politely knocked on the door before it flung open. Finally, after a year and a half, she was back in her mother's arms.
