Welcome to Storyline Online

brought to you by the SAG-AFTRA Foundation.

I'm Viola Davis and I'm reading

Rent Party Jazz written by William Miller and illustrated by Charlotte Riley-Webb

Every morning, as the sun was coming up,

Sonny went to work for the coal man.

"I sells mah coal two bits a sack," the coal man cried out

as they drove slowly down the streets of the French Quarter.

Sonny wished he were back in his warm bed,

but he knew how badly he and Mama needed the extra money.

Even though he would spend the rest of the day in school,

Sonny started the day like a working man.

Sonny's job was to jump down and drag the sacks into the alleys,

then shovel the coal down the chutes.

He made ten cents a day, seven days a week.

His mother worked in a fish canning factory.

All day long she packed fancy little fish, earning a penny for each can she filled.

When Sonny and the coal man drove through Jackson Square,

they would hear trumpet players blowing their horns.

The musicians played any tune people wanted to hear,

hoping listeners would drop a few coins into their hats.

One morning Sonny came home to find Mama sitting at the kitchen table.

She looked like she had been crying.

"What's the matter, Mama?" Sonny asked. "Are you sick?"

"Worse than sick, Sonny. I've been let go from my job.

These are some hard times, and folks aren't buyin' much fancy fish.

Might be three, four months 'fore they need these hands again."

Sonny's heart sank.

Rent day would be coming soon,

and the rent man didn't care whether you had a job or not.

All he wanted was his money.

If they missed paying the rent by just one day,

the rent man would change the locks and sell off their belongings at a public auction.

"I'll get a second job, Mama," Sonny said. "I'll quit . . ."

"No, Sonny," Mama interrupted.

"I got two weeks to find somethin' else.

You stay in school and learn everything you can—everything,

so things will be better for you."

After school that day,

Sonny wandered through the streets of the Quarter, tired and sad.

There had to be something he could do to help raise the rent money.

In Jackson Square a huge crowd had gathered around one man playing his horn.

Even from the back of the crowd,

Sonny could hear how fine the music was.

And no wonder the music was so good, so sweet, so clear.

Everybody in New Orleans knew about Smilin' Jack.

He had played his horn all around the country,

even in the great jazz clubs up North.

Smilin' Jack looked like the happiest man in the world,

blowing his magic horn, collecting bucketfuls of coins.

He seemed so happy, Sonny felt even worse about Mama and the rent money.

The next day and the next, Sonny found himself back in Jackson Square after school.

Smilin' Jack's music was too good to ignore.

Sonny always stood toward the front of the crowd,

though he still felt too sad and worried to clap or sing along.

On the third day Sonny stayed until the music was over

and people began drifting from the Square.

"Hey, young man, what's your name?"

Smilin' Jack asked as he stepped down from the platform.

"Sonny Comeaux, sir."

"You need a special tune, Sonny?

You're looking mighty down. Sure wish I could get those hands clapping."

"I love your music, Smilin' Jack," Sonny said.

"But a tune won't solve my problems."

"Problems? What kind of problems does a boy like you have?"

Sonny explained about his mother losing her job,

about the rent man who'd put them out on the street if they missed paying the rent.

Smilin' Jack suddenly looked serious.

"Back in Mississippi, where I come from,

they did the same thing to colored folks all the time.

But then we found a way to fight back,

pay the rent man and have the world's best party at the same time."

"How'd you do that?" Sonny asked.

"All the neighbors got together and threw themselves a rent party," Smilin' Jack said.

"They baked sweet potato pies, fixed up some catfish and greens,

then brought the food to the house where help was needed.

They put out a big empty bucket, too,

and soon someone who knew how to pluck a fine banjo or blow a jazzy horn

would start playing—

make people sing and dance and forget their worries for a while.

By the end of the night,

people had dropped enough money in that bucket

to put the old rent man back in his place."

"That sounds like a mighty fine idea," Sonny said.

"But where am I going to find somebody who'll play for Mama and me,

play for poor people he doesn't even know?"

Smilin' Jack faked a frown and tapped his foot.

"Some people say I play a pretty mean trumpet myself."

For the first time in days, Sonny smiled.

When Sonny got home, he found Mama sitting near the stove.

"No luck again today, Sonny," she said. "But I'll keep lookin'.

I'll find me that job to keep us goin'."

Sonny stirred the coals with a poker, trying to warm the damp room.

"Maybe you won't need that job right away, Mama," Sonny said.

"We're going to have a party tonight and raise all the money we need for the rent,

every last nickel and dime. Smilin' Jack told me how to do it."

"Don't be talking such foolishness, Sonny,

even if you're just tryin' to cheer me up,"

Mama said, pulling her shawl tighter around her shoulders.

"It's not foolishness, Mama," Sonny insisted.

"I'm going to prove it to you."

Sonny knocked on all the neighbors' doors,

told them about the party and asked them to bring whatever food they could spare.

He told them to get ready for the best music in the world.

They were all going to meet the great Smilin' Jack!

On his way home, Sonny found an empty bucket in an alley.

He put it on the floor just inside the doorway and sat down beside Mama to wait.

Mama shook her head, thinking her poor son had just plain lost his mind.

A little while later Sonny and Mama heard cheering and clapping in the street.

Then someone knocked loudly on the door.

"Mrs. Comeaux, I sure am pleased to meet you."

Smilin' Jack, trumpet in hand, bowed to Mama.

"Well, I'll be! I thought my boy had gone full-moon crazy,"

Mama said, hardly believing her eyes.

"I sure love your music, Smilin' Jack. I surely do."

Before Mama could say another word,

Smilin' Jack pulled the bucket toward him,

raised his trumpet, and started blowing one of Sonny's favorite songs,

"Bourbon Street Rag."

The house and the street were soon filled with people.

There was more food than Sonny had ever seen at one time,

enough for everyone who was busy clapping and singing and dancing.

All the neighbors had come to the party!

Sonny saw the LeBlanc twins running through the crowd.

And he saw the oldest woman in the neighborhood,

Mrs. Clairveaux, sitting in a chair, tapping along to the music with her cane.

Just one thing bothered Sonny at first.

He heard only a few coins drop into the bucket.

But as the night went on and the party started heating up,

he heard more and more and more.

At last Smilin' Jack stopped playing.

Then, without any music, he started singing

"When the saints go marching in.

When the saints go marching in.

Oh I love to be in that number.

Oh when the saints go marching in. Boom boom boom boom.

The whole crowd joined in, singing the verses, then the beautiful chorus.

Sonny felt like he was in another world,

a place where the music and the singing he loved would never stop.

When everyone had left, the bucket was brimming with coins.

Mama counted out the money they needed for the rent and handed the rest to Smilin' Jack.

"I thank you much, Smilin' Jack," she said.

"I took what I need to see us through. This belongs to you."

Smilin' Jack shook his head. "No ma'am.

That money belongs to anybody who needs it for rent or food.

I've already been paid.

This was the most fun I've had in a long time.

Wherever I go from now on, I'm going to play at least one rent party like this.

We'll show those rent men how good folks help each other."

Sonny walked Smilin' Jack back to Jackson Square.

"Thank you, Sonny Comeaux, for one of the happiest nights of my life," Smilin' Jack said.

"I sure hope to see you the next time I come to town.

I know just where to find you now."

They shook hands and hugged like old friends.

Sonny walked home slowly, wishing the night would never end.

He was glad he had listened to Mama.

If he had quit school and taken a second job,

he would never have met Smilin' Jack,

never have learned about bringing the neighbors together for a rent party.

It made him think about how much people could do for one another

if they put their minds and hearts to it.

Sonny figured he would stay in school and learn everything in his books and lessons.

And maybe, just maybe, he'd learn to play the trumpet, too.

Beneath the bright glow of the street lamps,

Sonny swayed back and forth, pretending he could blow a mean horn.

I love Rent Party Jazz because

African-American characters are the focus of the story,

It's about jazz and it's about people helping one another.

Great message.

I grew up in Rhode Island and I... I could have used a rent party.

with some jazz music and cornbread.

Turkey's Erdogan wins vote to expand presidential powers - Duration: 0:39.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has claimed a narrow victory in a referendum to

expand presidential powers.

With almost all of the 47 and a half million votes counted, the electoral board called

victory for the "Yes" campaign, which won about 51 percent.

The result would replace Turkey's parliamentary democracy with an all-powerful presidency,

meaning that Erdogan could stay in office until 2029.

The position of Prime Minister would also be scrapped.

Turkey's two main opposition parties said they would challenge the results, saying illegal

acts occurred during voting.

Korea's pension fund accepts bailout plan for Daewoo Shipbuilding - Duration: 1:55.

Korea's pension fund has accepted a bailout package for Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine

Engineering,... paving the way for one of the world's largest shipbuilders to stay afloat

despite being unprofitable in recent years.

Hwang Ji-hye has more.

Korea's National Pension Service has given the greenlight to a bailout plan for the troubled

Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering.

The NPS, the shipbuilder's major creditor, agreed on Monday... to accept a debt-to-equity

swap proposal.

The NPS said...

approving the bond restructuring deal will help raise the organization's profits in the

long run.

The acceptance of the NPS, which holds 30 percent of the company's bonds, does NOT mean

the debt-ridden shipbuilder has the final approval for its rescue plan.

Enough remaining creditors will still need to vote for the debt-to equity-swap deal in

a series of meetings over two days that started Monday.

There... bondholders will consider whether to agree to a 50 percent debt-to equity swap

of roughly one-and-a-half trillion won, or 1-point-3 billion U.S. dollars,... and a three-year

grace period on the remaining debt... under the condition that state banks will provide

Daewoo with an additional 2-point-6 billion dollars.

Pundits say, though,... that the pension service's decision has paved the way for other creditors

to keep one of the world's largest shipbuilders running.

"We can say that Daewoo is gaining time to go through restructuring while getting away

from the immediate liquidity crisis."

As the shipbuilder inches closer to a bailout, the focus now is on how fast Daewoo will be

able to normalize its business operations and make the most of the massive amount of

money poured into it.

Korea's presidential candidates begin first day of 22-day campaign - Duration: 2:30.

Korea's presidential candidates kicked off their first official day of campaigning at

the stroke of midnight.

Our Shin Se-min hit the trail as the five leading candidates started making their appeals.

Five candidates, five campaign strategies.

As the clock struck midnight on the first official day of campaigning,… only a few

candidates decided to hit the trail, but those who did hit the ground running.

People's Party candidate Ahn Cheol-soo paid a visit to the Vessel Traffic System at Incheon

port,… as one of his core election pledges is to ensure the safety and security of the

Korean people.

His visit comes just a day after the nation marked the third anniversary of the Sewol-ho

ferry sinking.

"Investment is a must in order to guarantee the safety and lives of the Korean people.

I promise to make this a nation that protects the lives of its people."

The conservative Bareun Party's Yoo Seong-min also got an early start on Monday with a campaign

event at the Seoul Emergency Operation Center, where he offered his encouragement to a group

of first responders… and promised to ensure a safer country for all.

Sim Sang-jung of the progressive Justice Party slightly different,… putting a great deal

of importance on a labor reform platform.

"Through drastic reforms, I will create a fair labor system, a country where young people

can love again, and I will become a president who will change people's lives."

Taking a different approach,… the Democratic Party of Korea's Moon Jae-in started his first

day of campaigning with a video message to appeal to his young supporters.

"I won't let the people get hurt, nor will I let this country collapse.

I will not let my dear country nor its people suffer and I will give all I have to ensuing

that never happens."

Hong Joon-pyo of the Liberty Korea Party started the day at a local traditional market in Seoul,

meeting local merchants and promoting his slogan of being a leader for ordinary citizens.

"With the presidential election now just three weeks away, the candidates aren't wasting

a second.

They're determined to meet just one more voter, to win over just one more citizen, especially

in a race that's shaping up to be an extremely close one.

Shin Se-min, Arirang News."

Chinese tour groups suspend travel to North Korea - Duration: 1:25.

Amid escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula, China has reportedly banned the sale of group

tour packages to North Korea.

This comes after President Trump's national security adviser said Washington was working

closely with Beijing, to come up with a response to North Korea's latest ballistic missile

test.

Yu Joonhee reports.

According to China News on Sunday, tour packages to North Korea have disappeared from the websites

of China's major travel agencies.

Hong Kong's South China Morning Post reported that the state-owned China International Travel

Services and Ctrip.com, two of China's largest tour operators, have imposed a travel ban

to North Korea.

However Koryo Tours, a British-firm specializing in individual and group tours to North Korea,

said its operations were continuing normally.

Air China, the country's flag carrier, announced last week that it was suspending its regularly

scheduled flights between Beijing and Pyongyang.

This comes after President Trump acknowledged China's assistance in addressing North Korea's

nuclear and ballistic missile programs, having previously discussed the issue in person with

his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping earlier this month.

North Korea attracts more than 100,000 foreign tourists a year, with most of them coming

from China.

According to China's state-run media, in the event of another nuclear test by North Korea,

it may target the country's vital oil supplies in response.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles Block Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie From Full-Time Royal - Duration: 2:57.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles are having yet another war of words with Prince Andrew

this time its over his bid to make his daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie

full time royals.

According to reports, Prince Andrew raised the matter directly with his brother Prince

Charles, as he wants his two daughters to be given the same royal privileges as Charles

two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.

Apparently, Prince Andrew wants his daughters to not only live in Kensington Palace, but

to be also given taxpayer funded royal roles.

Prince Charles blocked the request, putting his 90 year old mother in the center of a

royal storm between her two sons.

Of course, theres no way Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie will ever become full

time royals.

They simply dont have what it takes to be the kind of public royals who could take

on important charity work along with royal engagements in a full time capacity.

Even though Kate Middleton has long been criticized for being lazy with a work allergic problem

of her own, she can still make heads turn and command enough attention to her causes

thanks to her celebrity status to give her charities the attention that it needs.

Beatrice and Eugenie dont have the charisma, the character or even the popularity for Queen

Elizabeth to even give them any sort of royal responsibilities, let along anything else.

If that werent enough, theres speculation that Queen Elizabeth wants very little to

do with Princess es Beatrice and Eugenie simply because she doesnt want their mother, Sarah

Ferguson, in the spotlight again.

Queen Elizabeth knows that both girls take after their parents Prince Andrew and Sarah

Ferguson when it comes to their work shy attitude who want to do nothing more than become celebrities

who work off of royal benefits.

They already live a jet-setting life while commanding every luxury the world has to offer,

thanks to their royal titles.

The Queen already has enough embarrassment to deal with, thanks to Prince William and

Kate Middleton, along with Princes Charles wife Camilla Parker-Bowles and doesnt need

more royal leeches damaging the monarchys already sketchy reputation.

Tell us, do you think Beatrice and Eugenie should be given full time royal status?

Is Queen Elizabeth unfairly treating Prince Andrew and his daughter?

Should Prince Charles even be involved in this royal mess?

Tell us your thoughts in the comments below! thanks for watching.

President Trump orders all options against N. Korean nuclear threat: McMaster - Duration: 1:41.

After North Korea's failed missile launch over the weekend, President Trump's top security

advisor has warned Pyongyang that the administration will take action that's in the best interest

of the American people.

He also said the U.S. is working with its allies and China's leadership to develop range

of options on North Korea.

Kim Hyo-sun reports.

Reacting to North Korea's latest missile launch on Sunday,...

U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the National Security Council to prepare all options

to deal with the North.

National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster told ABC News that President Trump has made it

clear that Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program is unacceptable.

"The president has asked the National Security Council to integrate the efforts of the Department

of Defense, State, our intelligence agencies -- so we can provide options and have them

ready for him if this pattern of destabilizing behavior continues and if the North Korean

regime refuses to denuclearize."

Calling the latest missile test part of a pattern of provocation, destabilizing and

threatening behavior,... McMaster stressed there's an international consensus including

China that the North Korean nuclear issue cannot continue.

President Trump seems to have sent another warning to the North via his Twitter account,...

emphasizing the strength of the U.S. military.

Saying the U.S. military is building and is rapidly becoming stronger than ever before,...

he added that frankly, the United States has no choice.

Watchers say Trump's words could signal the possible use of military force in case of

continued provocations by the regime.

U.S. Vice President Pence to hold talks with S. Korea's acting president over THAAD, N. Korea - Duration: 2:32.

Our top story this afternoon...

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence will be sitting down for talks later in the day with South

Korea's acting president to discuss North Korea and the ongoing deployment of the THAAD

missile defense system to South Korea.

This is the first stop on Pence's first trip to the Asia-Pacific region.

Officials say the trip reflects the Trump administration's focus on Washington's ironclad

military alliance with South Korea amid the ongoing threats from the North.

Connie Kim starts us off.

The highlight of Mike Pence's three-day visit to South Korea will take place on Monday when

he sits down with South Korea's Acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn.

Prior to those discussions, the U.S. vice president visited the heavily fortified demilitarized

zone on Monday morning.

In recent years,... visiting U.S. officials have made a point of going to the DMZ to show

their support for the decades-old South Korea-U.S. alliance.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson also visited the area during his recent trip to

South Korea.

When Pence meets acting president Hwang, the agenda will most likely include response measures

to North Korea's provocations and the ongoing installation of the THAAD missile defense

system.

A White House official traveling with Pence previously said... the completion of the THAAD

deployment is up to South Korea's next president as the installation could be difficult to

complete before the May ninth election.

When the first pieces of equipment from the THAAD battery were brought to South Korea

in March, Seoul's defense ministry had said the installation could be completed as early

as April.

Following up on the U.S. official's comments, South Korea's foreign ministry said the stance

of both Seoul and Washington is unchanged and they will push for the completion of the

THAAD installation.

The joint statement following Hwang and Pence's talks will likely send a strong warning to

North Korea and reaffirm Washington's ironclad military alliance with South Korea.

While in Seoul, Pence will also meet National Assembly Speaker Chung Sye-kyun -- to discuss

President Trump's North Korea policy and THAAD.

Pence is also expected to speak with the heads of South Korean businesses to explain the

administration's economic policies... due to fears Trump is taking the U.S. down the

path of protectionism.

Considering U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson have

already visited Seoul in the early days of the Trump administration,...

South Korean officials say the new man in the White House is putting a lot of weight

on the two countries' alliance and on solving the North Korea issue.

004 - HDR, Panorama, DSLR Raw Images, and Mobile Phone Images - LR & PS: Workflow Strategies - Duration: 3:21.

- So I shared some best practices about capturing images and making sure that you're able to

capture great images.

Where it is slightly different is when it comes to HDR and panorama.

And those are things you're probably aware of from your phone because the phone is automatically

able to create those.

But I want to give you a couple of tips and tricks to avoid some common landmines using

those automated features.

So I love that I can create HDR or high dynamic range images with my phone.

It automatically takes multiple exposures and it fuses them together.

One of the problems with that though is that if anything is moving, if leaves or grass

are moving around or the clouds are blowing by, it manifests itself as ghosting in the

images.

It doesn't look that great.

The other problem with that is that the final resolution is a jpeg image.

It's not a fantastic quality image.

And so by taking the time to capture individual high-resolution images, you can get a much

better result.

And so what you want to do is you want to take at least three different images with

your phone.

Rather than doing it automatically, you want to do it manually.

And you just touch and hold to lock your exposure and slide up or down to adjust your exposure.

It's similar to what you want to do on your traditional camera.

You want to underexpose one image, you want to overexpose one image and you want to shoot

another one that's completely neutral.

And the same goes for your traditional camera.

You want to underexpose, overexpose, and shoot one right in the middle.

Now there are some cameras that do auto-bracketing, that's perfectly fine to use.

But what you want to end up with is three to five images of mixed exposures that you

can then later put together in Lightroom.

With panorama it's a similar deal.

I love that on the phone I can simply pan around and create a nice panorama.

But again if anything is moving in the image, that's going to be a problem later.

That's going to show up as weird ghosting or people with stretched facial expressions.

And the way to do it is to just make sure that you capture images that overlap.

More is better.

Just capture a bunch of images that overlap and make sure they have loosely the same exposure.

Again the exposure is dictated by touching the image and you can touch and hold it to

lock it.

Now with a traditional camera when you're shooting panorama, the one tip that I'll give

you is you want to find the tripod socket which is usually right under the lens and

I'll usually just put my finger in that and rotate the camera.

And the reason for this is you want to stay on that same axis as you're capturing those.

It's just a loose rule of thumb.

If you don't have a tripod socket that's right there under the lens, you can just position

your finger under the lens and rotate on the axis of the lens.

Again make sure that your images overlap.

Make sure that you have plenty of content and I think you'll be really surprised that

when it comes to HDR and panorama, Lightroom on the desktop is going to do a fantastic

job of fusing them together.

It's going to take a couple moments longer than the automated features in the phone or

the camera, but the results are going to be a lot better.

002 - Using the Exercise Files - From React to React Native - Duration: 3:03.

- [Instructor] If you have access to the exercise files, I'm going to show you, specifically

for React Native, the steps that you need to do in order to use the exercise files.

Keep in mind that the courses folder will be created in a future video, but we need

to have it on the screen right now to show you how to use the exercise files.

In this video, we'll go over the steps that you need to do in order to make any of the

exercise files work in your current project.

So, in theory you should have your course's project already initialized, like so.

So you should have these files.

The next thing you need to do to add any of the code from the exercise files so you open

the exercise files and inside of it there's chapters which corresponds to the chapter

on the videos and once you click on any of them you'll have the specific videos that

are related to the ones that you are watching.

So if you are on video two of chapter three, this is the exercise files that you will be

using.

Inside of those you have a start state and an end state, which means that once we start

video two of chapter three, we start at this point and then when we're done, this is the

end state.

So, just for the example here, we'll use the end state of this particular chapter and then

copy and paste those files into our current project here, so apply to all, replace, and

we've copied the exercise files.

So, right now, if I start the project, it wouldn't work, so we need to do three steps

in order to run the project and make sure it runs with the exercise files.

The first thing you need to do because sometimes there are dependencies that are involved with

a specific video, we need to install the dependencies, so we'll go into our console, or command prompt

for our Windows folks, and make sure you are in the right directory where your React Native

project is and then we'll do an NPM install.

Perfect, the next thing you need to do is link the files and I'm going through what

that means in a future video, so for now what we'll do, I'll just link it, but you'll understand

what that means in a couple of videos.

So, the files have been linked and now we can start the project.

So react-native run-ios, and you'll project will start.

Alright, the project is built with the exercise files and this is the view of the application

on chapter three, video two, so we're good.

Use these same steps if you use any of the exercise files inside of your project and

run these steps and you should be good to go.

001 - Course Prerequisites - From React to React Native - Duration: 0:47.

- [Instructor] As this course is the creation of React Native application from a React project,

experience developing with React is a must.

If creating React components using props and importing modules are concepts that are unfamiliar

to you, I'd suggest you take a basic React course, such as React Essential Training by

Eve Porcello.

Also, experience with JavaScript, especially ES6 syntax, is a must for this course, as

this is the basis of a React programmer, and in this course, I use the ES 2015 version

of the syntax.

Last but not least, being familiar with terminal commands and NPM is a must, and you need to

have it installed prior to taking this course.

Look I'm back home! Also, time to pound Blasto *winks*

Bigger is better in my book....I'm sorry I'll leave, bad joke

I've played Shovel Knight! Just the base game but still!

Just seeing where they all are beforehand

So after seeing the word Corplet (little enemies) in this game prior when I watched someone else play the opening, the only 'town' would be around here, I was right!

I guessed for this one, lot of ramps near the start of the area, plus they kept saying something about treasure so I assumed it was that one room I found before.

Having trouble, so I'll do this next time! Stay beautiful <3 Cya
