Got it!
Oho! Yeah!
Hi, guys! Hi!
Look, I have a small surprise for you!
You even cannot guess who is sitting here!
I know that you are very much interested in trophy pike, so
let me introduce you to Anton, - one of the best
trophy hunters in this area!
So, I think you might fish together today.
Meanwhile we will catch some perch,
and you could catch some real trophy! Are you ready?
You see, Normunds, - he is one of the most serious
trophy hunters in Latvia.
- I have heard a lot about him. - Yes. - Even seen him few times.
- Hi, Anton! - I believe you'll have fun.
talking and fishing together. - Ok, ok, come here!
- Or maybe we wont give him, we are also interested!
- Come on, give us "vernjaks"
- Fine, fine! - Listen, you had some
unfinished deals with big perch
from winter fishing - Yes, yes, we lost a huge one
and now we'll find it! - Great! Keep in touch
and send photos! However what can you get with those small
soft baits, we will show serious equipment!
- Let's have a look!
- Yeah!
- Hi everyone! Copes Garša #10!
We have a guest from Belarus!
Famous Anton Fisherman!
He's speciality is big pikes, and today he will help
us to catch a big pike of Aluksne Lake!
It is middle of the summer, so probably
not the best time for catching pikes, but we'll try.
So let's go!
Since we have international team on board,
we'll be talking Russian today,
so that Anton would
understand what we are talking about.
There are subtitles in Latvian so that you could
better understand if not so good in Russian.
Ok, let's start!
- Anton! Hi, once more! - Hi!
- Look, our theme today
is.. as I understand this Aluksnes lake
is quite similar to yours in Belarus. - Yes! We crossed it with
those guys, and they showed me the lake a bit
and I observed, that some 17 - 20 thousand years ago
one and the same glacier came and made all those lakes,
mine in Belarus and yours here, because it's just 200km distance.
It looks very similar, relief, water and...
everything looks similar, and I have to confess
that this is not the best time to catch
trophy pike, but well... you can never know.
And sometimes even in heat
I've got some good pikes
and just had great fishing, that's why
I think we'll combine our knowledge
about this lake... you have also been here before - Yes
and I'm fishing in similar conditions
that's why I think .... ah, yes, the main thing we have Normunds,
who is always catching big pikes, so
if we fail, he will catch something for sure!
- I have an offer! to make all this more interesting
for us and
for all others
I will show you depth map of the lake
and you'll show what do you think
where the trophy pike should be.
- Ok, let's try. Won't you put on black bag over my head?
-No
- We'll mark points and then we'll see
whether there are some fish or not.
- Even not looking at the depth map
First of all I would look for
the vegetation
and bait fish
because a pike always lives in places where food is.
She won't stay anywhere
and generally I think she is not moving a lot.
So, first of all, you know spots you
have already hunted for big fish, and, let's
say this area ...
more shallow, because now water temperature is
around 20-21C degrees.
This is quite cool water, because in
our lakes now it is around 25-26C degrees
So, I think we can try these shallow areas...
big meadows with vegetation.
Besides we need to fish fast and
constantly moving with drift anchor
I mean one cast and keep moving
to cover large territory
Also I think we should try ...
... let's try to find
let's say here like small hills,
in my lake such spots are productive
at this time of the year. Like these small hills with depth around.
I think, ... I haven't seen them yet,
but I think there should be
vegetation on top.
We should see is there any bait fish
and then quickly check those hills
with three, four casts for each of us
is enough to understand.
So, we can spend some time
to check those hills.
Then we can check also some holes
because it is possible that ...
Do smlet live in that lake? - Yes.
- Small, white bait fish. - Yes.
So at this time of the year they are gathering
in deeper areas at 10-12 meters
and then there we can trey to
search for some pelagic pike, who
is sitting in the mid water near that bait fish crowd
and then it might react on our big bites
and rise if active.
- It's high time we should move! - Long time ago!
- Can't wait already! - Yes!
- Let's go!
- If I'd stand there and cast ... .
- There is one
- Looks like pike,
but not big.
- If we catch mother
and if the drag is not tight enough, we might lose it.
- Tell me, what we're going to do now?
- Are we drifting along with the wind?
with drift sock?
- Look , we'll check
the wind direction
and if it fits our trajectory ...
now I see we'd need to move
where we marked.
-Yes.
- I'd be moving like this way.
But now wind is taking us
- We can use electric motor
- Yes, we can pull drift sock out and use electric motor
which is better solution now.
I have started with such a bait.
I've experience that in
clear water
such colour is effective Middle size, not the big one...
just for checking, and then we'll change colours.
- Oho!
- this is ... - I have seen this Guppie somewhere!
- No doubt I'll see good equipment now.
- Right ones!
- Right toys for boys!
- There is one more 30cm - 26 cm
- ok, 26cm, wonderful
- Spotted Bullhead
colour
- this year 110cm pike with this one
- I also have experimental task
or how it is called...
I'll be working also with
bigger hard baits
130-140.
What I have observed with spinning reel
big lures are tangling up with leader
upon casting
especially with fast and sharp cast
but with baitcasting reel this is not happening, because
line is running out straight.
That's why today I have picked up some new
test set
and will try to twitch with baitcasting reel.
This is new for me and let's see what comes out of it.
I've used for big baits, but not for
such lures.
Let's see.
New Shimano baitcasting reel
I'm not an expert yet
but will see.
I'm not sure how many tangles
I'll have. Let's see.
- Here are centrifugal drags
and they all were on
which is for 40-50g.
We'll
all, maybe 3 of 4 switch off
one is left, because
I tried to switch off all of them
but then you might have tangles.
One is left on,
which is sufficient for that type
of lures.
- After that if you need more tight
adjust with magnetic.
Should be ok now.
- Clear! Thank you!
- Welcome!
- That's it! i'm going to work with normal baits.
- I did'n like my cast at all.
Just around 20m, Anton adjusted,
so now should be better.
Now it is about 45m.
Keep fishing!
- What is interesting in such glacier lakes
to my experience
July,
especially if it is so hot,
and almost all August
most inactive months.
Meanwhile in Finland it's vice versa,
in July and August, still difficult to catch
but lots of catches and small pikes are very active,
regardless of the warm water. Apparently it depends on bait fish.
- You want to say for us is "mission
impossible" today?
- well.... look, you know as they say about Musky
pike - yo need 10000 casts
the same about trophy pike. There are days you have 5
and days when there is none in a week.
- And the main thing, as my fellow says,
less pause between casts. - Yes! That's right!
- Listen, flies like arrow!
Thank you! - Always welcome!
you know my card number? - Of course!
- Water is blossoming, omg!
- Regarding clear water, many have stereo types that
if water is murky, you should use bright lures
but if it is clear,
then natural colours.
For me many times it was contrariwise.
Besides...
in murky waters
dark lures are visible better
than bright ones.
At least ichthyologists say so.
May time I had situations that in clear water
in Finland closer to the sea
when completely bright colours
like green, yellow
were more effective than
natural colours. I think it is related
to that if a pike has lots of food.. of bait fish,
sometimes you need to imitate bait fish,
close to to the natural one,
but sometimes it is vice versa, if there are a lot of bait fish
pike works like sanitary
fist of all it eats what is easier to eat.
Some sick fish
or not good at swimming
so when there is a crowd of bait fish and
some bright lure appears in the middle, so
this might better irritate pike
than natural colour.
- Regarding hard lures. I think that
the colour almost doesn't matter.
- Yes, because
pike is looking up
how can it see what's on lure's sides?
- Besides, look, - good fish!
- Yes,
we can even mark it.
- If you would be asked to choose one colour, what would you choose?
Universal, working in any water, for pike.
- Something like this,
with dark back ... - I would choose....
and light sides...
so that during
rolling action
there would this contrast.
I would choose that kind of lure.
- I would choose
Matt Tiger or Fire Tiger
composition of green, red, yellow
with stripes.
To my mind it works
always - Yes, because it is right colour.
Theses always have contrast,
dark back and lighter sides.
- Fish!
- I didn't really understand, is it fish or something?
- Give it to me, I'll fish with it!
- We are not fishing with live baits
- I have got fish with my new spinning set
But at the beginning I didn't understand
was it fish or not.
That's a small one.
On Ballisong
Active
- How long pike can you take. - 50 cm
- Still in the middle of the summer one small pike
we've got.
As to size, it's like
our big baits today.
- Such a big crowd beneath us.
- Listen, we have got four pikes.
How are our trophy
hunters doing?
Actually we are laughing a bit about them
those big baits... as Ivars said: "Imagine
if someone would throw bricks on above your head, you would run away"
but well...
we'll see
Trophy hunters are trophy hunters...
- Regarding soft baits
in my boat and in my colleagues'
in Finland for example
top three soft baits
Pig Shad
Mc Rubber and
let's say few years ago
also Snack Baits joined the company.
Also very nice soft lure
I will show you how I
prepare them
For example, now we are fishing in 4-5m
so logically we need to add more weight.
There is one version-
stinger attached with ring
from one side easy solution,
on other side not convenient storage,
and each lure should have it own stinger.
But we can do like this
attach stinger with snap
and then
don't change stinger, but just soft lure.
When I'm fishing in Finland
in not so deep water
all soft baits are kept like his
just with spiral,
and we are attaching one stinger and
then just changing lures.
Don't like colour just change...
just a second
Taking into account we are fishing in deeper water here
we need to add additional weight, we have different options
one of the simplest is
just tungsten weight
attached to the snap
just a bit above lure
like this.
Again those weights can be changed
smaller, bigger ... depends on situation
or remove at all if fishing in shallow water
and again with the lure
fed up with this one, remove and
easily change to another.
All those big soft baits are the same size
and stingers are also more or less universal
So... guys just presented me new Snack Baits
Thank you very much
I'll try to cath something
with it.
One more small tip
that I learned from my
Finnish friend Mikko
I'll disassemble the lure
Armands already cut a bit
but what we do
we take Mc Rubber
by eyes and
pull a bit aside
and accurately cut.
So you see now we have flat surface
ant that's why we get more resistance
and lure makes more
hydrodynamic noise under water
and even at a low speed
lure keeps
it's rolling
action, which usually stops
at low speed
It is not moving, but with
this cut
in Finland guys call it "dog face"
rolling action is present still at low speed
Really this
trick is working
because if look at my PigShads
those with cut nose
are more used
than those with not cut
Even Claes Swartszonker
pointed out this
theme, saying that maybe
he will produce special series with cut nose.
So this is what it looks like
Gints!
- I feel you'll get big one today
because we have
got small ones
already four pikes ... for us it seems funny
you're casting those "bricks"
but let it be
You are laughing about our lures,
we are about yours
but we have 4 pikes, and you?
- Eh...one.
- 40 cm - Ok
- We are moving on
- I think we still
have a chance, because it is getting darker
and it is going to rain,... wind
I think we have chance
we already know, that
it is hard to catch
big pike if there is no wind
so we'll keep casting
- But Gints, those pikes are not into account, you need to get perch
- Yes, yes, we are going exactly
- We got some small perch
but we'll have bigger ones as well
ok, guys, bye!
- We are in hell,
air is full with flies
I think we should chnge place
I should confess I like working with baitcasting reel
even don't need to use drag,
Antons adjusted and everything works fine
I don't know all yet
but casts are great
about 40 m.
Fishing almost all day
and I like it
and didn't hav any tangles
this is what I wanted.
I have experimented with casts and
all are fine.
So I think I'll continue
what we need is fish
who eats lure.
Rain is comming, getting more cloudy
hopefully we'll catch
we don't have a choice.
We wont use small baits, we are here for
big pike
at least remarkable.
- Going away
- Yes, look like...
- in the evening
a bit more cloudy
- Mhm
- But hasn't influenced fishing
results yet.
Here in this lake we need to buy licence
- Yes.
- We are allowed to take certain amount of fish or all should be released
what are the rules?
- Yes, we have
special rules, because
in Latvia you can take 5
50cm pikes
five 45cm zanders
and perch
10kg, no excuse me
5kg
here they have limit to 3 fish
three big fish. - But you are allowed to take big ones?
- Yes, it's allowed.
They are planning more restrictions
of the big size
in order to keep trophies.
- The more trophies...the more interesting lake
- Besides trolling is not
allowed in May.
- Otherwise allowed? - Yes.
Just with one rod.
They were not
satisfied, but...
the main things that
lake is in good control
I thin this lake is top three
if not the first
regarding trophies.
Persh and also pikes,
13kg or 14kg was caught
last year.
124cm
- Wonderful!
- It was great fish!
Now, Norchik, let's check teeth marks
as you like it.
- Yes, have a look!
It was big pike!
Really big!
Bite traces in head
look those cuts
so deep...
are not typical for small pikes. - Oho!
- This was normal fish! - Destroyed your gift.
- Yeah, just got new...
- But it is still quite good to use - What else, look!
How I usually judge about size,
cuts are one thing
but cuts are here
I had new fluorocarbon leader, even here small
there were jaws
but then you start checking lure
this is small one
- Here as well
- Look
- Cuts are even here
- Generally speaking all lure was in
jaws of the pike, so generally 3kg pike couldn't eat it.
- It wasn't small fish
- These were great jaws
- What a pity!
- Brrr... - I saw your face changed
- All day casting and then there was one
- As I said, clouds appeared and
Anton had first catch
he said it was big pike
so we still have hope
in all these hours
we have one .
Unfortunately
we lost it
but you can never know with big ones.
But at least
we have better feeling on board
that some action going on, otherwise sleeping already
Let's go!
- So, preparing for trophy fishing
in deep water and
also shallow,
what are conditions
where to search it?
- Main condition for big pike is food
first of all.
Actually if there is pike in general then there is big pike also
- So it means
it doesn't depend just on location
but also bait
- Of course!
Thinking about trophies
we don't need perfect place
but right bait.
- I solemnly believe that big bait
is essential in trophy fishing.
Pike is lazy fish
and eats what it can get with less energy
so there are no huge baits for pike
just we cannot cast so big.
There are many stories, that
bigger one grasped smaller pike
and even not just kilo, but three or more.
But you won't be casting so huge lure.
So fact that
20-30cm lures are attacked
by small pikes
proves that there are no huge baits for pikes.
Also considering, why should 10kg pike
be hunting for this small lure.
It is even not fulfiling...
why it is attacking, in order to eat
with this small lure it even doesn't compensate
it's energy waste
in order to
catch so small lure.
That's why logically pike will be catching what is bigger
and nourishing.
So big baits is good solution
for trophy fishing.
While I was fishing with small ones
I didn't got any big pike.
As soon as I started to use big bites I got more and more trophies.
Also I have an example
in my Braslava Lakes
we had
trophy competition
last autumn and there was...
GOT IT! - Oh! Big one!
- This is pleasure! I even saw it catching my lure near boat! Switch off the motor please!
- Anton!
- It is very important to carefully hold big pikes
because we are releasing it
so we need to do everything not to hurt it.
First we need huge landing net with silicone net
and first we need to remove hooks
not lifting pike in the boat
that's why we need big landing net
so pike can rest there
and feel well
carefully take and remove hooks
and then pike is in safety
because while there are hooks it can hurt itself cut artery and
start bleeding
and it will be complicate to save it.
All stinger was in jaws, we removed it carefully
took lure away
we don't need it now
and the pike back in landing net
to be sure it is doing well
if pike turns herself in right position
it means it is allright
meanwhile we are preparing weights, ruler and cameras
and fish all this time stays in the net
- Beauty!
- Super! We have got big pike of Aluksne Lake!
But probably we'll got more!
They are living here!
and we have a chance! - Good job, Anton!
- Lower down the rod!
- Don't let it rise!
- Great!
- 11.5kg!
- We have new personal record!
- Record breaks each time with Copes Garša!
- Anniversary broadcast!
- Too short!
122cm...
even
123cm
123cm!
- Almost 12kg, yes?
- 11.5kg
- What are you talking about, guys?
- About pike!
- Anton, Normund, you are simply great!
- This pike is great!
You, guys, showed how to catch... - So big pike...
you definitely have to release, because you can catch it again
Pleasure catching it is so much bigger that eating. - Catch and release!
123cm
11.5kg - OH!!!
- Normund, great job!
- Thank you!
110 cm and 123 cm
Aluksnes Lake
Friends,
big bait
is working! And right guys as well!
- Thank you!
- Cosmoss!
but this is something...
- We also had nice fishing day,
we had 9 pikes ...
We gave you Anton
now we are taking him back. Anton come on, let's go!
- That's it? You are taking me away?
- Let's go!
- Norchik! - Thank you for fishing with us.
- I think you've learned something.
- Come back again!
- Bye!
- What can I say
I'm happy, Normunds is happy, and Anton as well
and now Gints is happy too
I hope you also enjoyed
our adventures in Aluksne.
Frankly speaking I was not completely confident
that we will manage to catch
such trophy in the middle of the summer,
but well...
right guys know how.
Thank you for watching
please follow or channel
and like our posts, this is very important for us
to continue making such movies!
- See you!
