Last time we were at the saying of Allah, Almighty..
Tabaraka His Name, and Glorified His Attributes.. at the verse that is about Bani Israel:
"And you had already known about those who transgressed among you concerning the sabbath, and We said to them, "Be apes, despised.". "
And we've mentioned that this verse is related to the verse..
At Surah Al-A'raf..
"And ask them about the town that was by the sea.. "
And the Glory of Allah, Almighty, is beyond deceit..
And one of the rules that Allah, Almighty, has decreed upon His creations.. is that..
'The reward is of the kind of the deed.'
But, the intention remains..
having its consideration..
And we've explained this before.. is the story of..
the companion who was..
.. hit by an anonymous [Gharb] arrow that killed him.. [as martyr]
and he ended in the Highest Ferdows.. in Jannah..
Although, he didn't share in the battle yet.
and we've explained that story before..
When, Pharaoh said.. as in Qur'an..
".. does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me.. "
".. and these rivers flowing beneath me?"
so, Allah has drowned him in water!
Before that, he used to say that the water is beneath his kingdom..
This is according to the rule; 'The reward is of the kind of the deed.'.
So, this group of people..
who were..
living in a town by the sea..
they did something.. and concealed something..
and, Allah knows their intentions..
And Allah won't allow anyone to be destroyed, except the condemned person
Allah said: "..and We said to them, "Be.. "
and this is an order for them to be.. a divine order for them to be.. it is not a Shr'ian command.
The interpreter Mujahed, may Allah put mercy on him.. he said..
[Mujahed Bin Jabr Al-Maki, he is one of the students of Ibn Abbas.]
It was narrated that he, may Allah put mercy upon him, he died while at Sujood, in Al-Masjid Al-Haram..
he had his own opinion about this disfigurement.. other than all people of Tafsir!!
that this transformation is incorporeal..
not physical..
He said; 'It is their hearts that were transformed..
and their understandings became as that of Apes.'
But, they remained looking like humans!
Nothing changed with them, as regards their external appearance.
He said; this verse..
has a similar verse in Qur'an..
Allah, Almighty, said:
"The example of those who were entrusted with the Torah.. "
".. and then did not take it on is like that of a donkey who carries volumes [of books].. " 62:5
He said; Arabs are familiar with such expression..
and the poet said: 'If you didn't adore..
and you didn't experience love..
then, be a rock.. of the hard boulder stones.'
he said; this expression is like that.'
That was the saying of Mujahed.
But, scholars of Tafsir has argued him saying..
this is against the rule of explaining Qur'an as it apparently indicates..
Because, if we are to interpret the verse here as it indicates.. apparently..
and it is supported by the saying of Allah, Almighty..
".. and made of them apes and pigs and slaves of Taghut.. " 5:60
They said this verse is direct.. just like the other one.
So, we can't say that both verse..
are having indirect meaning..
which is the incorporeal transformation only..
not the physical disfigurement.
Clear?
That was the opinion of Mujahed.
But, people of Tafsir..
They said..
the transformation had actually happened..
But, the disagreement was about..
What?
Those whom Allah made of them apes.. we seek refuge with Allah..
Did they continue living, and had offspring?
And, is this kind of animal, that we are seeing today, is it from them?
Or, have they perished.. and died?
And Jumhur of people of Tafsir..
including Al-Habr Bin Al-Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him and his father..
They say; they've lived for three days..
after Allah has changed their appearance.
They weren't eating or drinking..
Then, they've died!
And many scholars has approved this explanation..
that, if a person is disfigured, we seek refuge with Allah..
he doesn't live!
He might live for 7 or 3 days..
but, he doesn't eat.. doesn't drink..
then, he dies!
Abo Bakr Al-Arabi, may Allah put mercy on him, said..
[And, he was one of the important Maliki scholars]
He said that..
This kind of animal group.. that we have today..
is from them..
are the offspring of these people..
And his evidence was..
The Hadith that was narrated by Imam Muslim, in Sahih..
The prophet, SAW, said:
'An Ummah of Bani Israel was lost..'
[i.e. it was lost as it was transformed.]
'.. and I don't see them other than..
[.. or I think they aren't other than..]
.. the rat.'.
That was the saying of the prophet, SAW, in Sahih Muslim.
'.. Don't you see.. ' [He was talking to his companions.]
'.. if we bring it.. ' [he means; to the mouse]
'.. camel's milk, it doesn't drink it.. '
'.. but, if we bring it, sheep's milk, it drinks it!'
And it is known that Jews do not drink camel's milk..
Because, Israel [Jacob] peace be upon him..
he had forbidden, upon himself, drinking camel's milk.
Is it clear now?
this was the evidence of those who were saying that, they are the same.
They said; the mouse is one form of the transformations
and they were a group of Jews who were transformed, then propagated..
and the evidence in the Hadith..
is that, the mouse does not accept to drink the camel's milk!
This means that, originally, it was..
Jewish..
Is it clear now?
Because, Jews do not drink camel's milk.
And in another Hadith..
they brought to the prophet, SAW, the Dabb Lizard..
then he said:
'A nation was transformed.. ' i.e they were transformed to Dabbs..
' and I'm afraid, this one might be one of them.'
And Al-Jumhur has responded to these two evidences, saying..
the prophet, SAW, said in the Hadith; 'I think.. '
so, this means that was his conjecture..
before that Allah, Almighty, has told him, with revelation.
as, in Sahih Hadith..
it is; 'those who were transformed, they do not reproduce offspring.'
And this Hadith is Sahih.
and it was also narrated by Imam Muslim, may Allah put mercy upon him. in his Sahih book.
So, these were..
the argument of each group of scholars..
about this subject.
Then, some people of knowledge said;
The prophet, SAW..
in Hadith, that was considered by some scholars as having a good Sanad[reference].
he said;
'This Ummah will have..
bombardments, transformation to animal shapes, and rift formations!
that is when they begin to have singers and music..
and they drink alcoholic drinks.
And I've said..
some of professionals in Hadith..
they've considered this Hadith as goog[Hasan].
But, I say, and Allah knows best..
that, its text, is about to be unacceptable
And we say..
these sins that were counted in the Hadith..
although they are real sins..
and drinking alcohol, is of the biggest sins..
But, I think.. it is unlikely..
that, anyone of Ummah of Muhammad, SAW.. would be transformed..
to any of the animals, that nations before us were transformed to.
This is my thinking.. it is far to happen.. it doesn't happen.
that, anyone of Ummah of Muhammad, SAW.. would be transformed to an animal form.
and he believes in the oneness of Allah..
and he believes that Muhammad, SAW, has conveyed the message of Allah.
And Allah knows best!
This is merely my opinion, that I have from my understanding..
about the deen of Allah, Almighty..
after studying..
the favors that Allah, Almighty, has granted this Ummah..
and the honor that the Lord has for his prophet, SAW.
and after knowing this Hadith..
Allah, Almighty..
will bring out, to a man from Ummah of Muhammad, 99 registers.. which extend to as far as a sight could see..
So, this person has that much..
99 big books, if we spread each of them, it will extend to as far as a sight could see!
Yet..
he is not mutated.. not thrown in a rift..
the same applies with even more force to..
the person who does the previously mentioned sins, in the former Hadith,
However, the issue of intentions, still have their impact.
But, as I've said..
I seek refuge with Allah that I debate a Sahih Hadith.
But, we should..
in the process of certifying the Sahih Hadith..
we should consider studying the text..
as well as considering the Sanad [narrators].
We must study both aspects thoroughly..
even though, this was rejected by some.. may Allah forgive us and them.
Back to the morals of the verse..
"And you had already known about those who transgressed among you concerning the sabbath.. "
And, till today, the Jews are still glorify Saturday..
and they do not work on Saturdays.
You know the war of 10th of Ramadan..
at the year 1973 Gregorian..
that is known as; October war..
It began..
on Saturday, at 3 O'clock.. at the afternoon..
because, that was their holiday..
that's why the war was planned to begin on that day..
because, Jews take Saturday as a day off.
And the 3 PM was chosen..
because, it was the time of changing shifts..
and usually during that time, the work is uncontrolled.
And these are war tactics..
that is taking advantage of the beliefs of people..
while setting plans.
And, knowing Human Sciences..
helps in the process of serving them too..
e.g. The prophet, SAW..
when Quraysh prevented him from reaching Al-Bait..
and Muslims were having the sacrifices[Al-Hadi] with them..
So, Al-Hadi remained held..
Allah said:
".. while the offering was hindered[Makofan] from reaching its place.. "
and its place was Al-Bait.
And Quraysh has prevented them.
then the animals of the offering became weak..
and the delegates were running between Quraysh and the Muslims..
Then Quraysh sent a man..
and the prophet knew him, he said: 'This man is from people who respect sacrifices..
So, release the animals of Al-Hadi..
So, when the man came, the companions released Al-Hadi
so, he noticed that the animals were getting weak and powerless..
And as an Arabic man, he knows the consequences of this..
the effect on sheep, goats, and camels, away from the grazing land.
So, he felt sorry to see that..
and he turned back..
and he was angry at Quraysh..
because..
it was very hard for him to see Al-Hadi suffering like that..
so, he became supportive to the request of the prophet, SAW.
even though, he wasn't a believer.
The point is, blessed viewers.. knowing the traditions of people..
is a prophetic Sunnah.. [method].
It helps understanding people..
and consequently, how to educate them and to instruct them..
Allah said:
"And you had already known about those who transgressed among you concerning the sabbath, and We said to them, "Be apes, despised."."
"And We made it.. "
".. a deterrent punishment for those who were present and those who succeeded [them] and a lesson for those who fear Allah. "
And Arabs say: 'The fortunate, who would take lessons from others.'
So..
[I don't know what to say].
But..
The worst situation that a man might face..
[may Allah prevent worse things from happening to us, the little and the big ones]
That people would benefit from your advice..
that people would benefit from your knowledge..
that people would benefit from your recitation..
that people would benefit from your submission[Khushu]..
that people would benefit from your education..
that people would benefit from your money..
that people would benefit from a thing that Allah has granted you..
But, you can't benefit from having it, yourself!!
I seek refuge with Allah, this is a great loss.
But, the wise person..
and all of us are falling behind this duty..
shouldn't accept that only others benefit..
and this is not because we envy others..
but, he, himself is a priority..
to avoid being condemned at Resurrection Day, with evidence.
And this subject is about discipline of the soul and training it..
and raising it up to perfection.
So, the person should begin with himself.
Allah, Almighty, said:
"And We made it a deterrent punishment for those who were present and those who succeeded [them].. "
".. and a lesson for those who fear Allah. "
Another lesson in the verse..
It shows that Allah, almighty, is Exalted in Might and Owner of Retribution.
because, these people were a nation..
they took the command of their Lord lightly..
and, they know that Allah knows the secrets and that which is hidden.
Yet, they've done these plans..
to have gains..
from things that were forbidden by Allah.
But, you should know, from the Fiqh point of view..
What Allah has forbidden as a subject. for itself..
is different from..
what Allah has forbidden as a method.
And this point is an important point in Fiqh.
The item that it is a prohibited item..
is different of a prohibited methodology..
So, the item that is prohibited..
is still prohibited, irrespective of the way you are getting it.
But, when the method is the forbidden way, and the item is not prohibited..
you can just avoid the forbidden method..
and then, having the item is Halal..
Clea?
e.g. The prophet, SAW, was given good dates, from Khyber farms..
So, he was amazed when he saw it..
He said: 'Are all dates of Khyber like this?'
They said: 'No, messenger of Allah.'
he said: 'What do you do?'
They said:
'We sell..
For example; two measures of a bad quality dates..
for one measure of a good quality dates.
Then, he, SAW, said: 'Don't do this again,
this is usury itself..
but, instead of that..
sell the bad dates first..
then with the money, buy the good dates,
So, what is forbidden here is the method.. not..
the commodity!
i.e. The good dates are Halal..
But having it with this method, is usury..
But, if you sell the bad dates first..
then you have the money..
then you buy the good dates with the money..
This is ok. to do..
because, the method is different..
and the commodity itself is Halal.
But, if the commodity itself is prohibited..
any method of getting it is prohibited..
For example; Alcohol!
Allah, Almighty, has forbidden it..
Allah said: ".. So will you not desist? " 5:91
Today, it is given many different names..
and it is served..
in places..
you know these places..
only; Knowing them!
[Allah forbid you know them in other ways!]
So in this case..
all ways are forbidden!
It is prohibited, whatever the name they are giving it..
And 'the rule is applied to the meaning not to the wording'..
They call them; spiritual drinks..
they call them other names..
Whatever is the name..
as long as it blocks the mind, then it is [Khamr]
and having it by any means is forbidden.
But, when Allah, Almighty, forbids the method..
the Halal commodity remains as it is..
you just need to change the method of getting it.
"And We made it a deterrent punishment for those who were present and those who succeeded [them] and a lesson[Watho] for those who fear Allah. "
[Al-watho]
is the method of prophets before us..
Allah said to His prophet: ".. but admonish[Awitha] them.."
".. and speak to them a far-reaching word. " 4:63
But..
it is better if our brothers..
the scholars.. the speakers of Khutbas.. people of Dawah..
to fear Allah, when talking to believers..
because, giving advice[Watho].. it should be based on solid knowledge..
not on shouting..
not with discussing matters, people are not in need of knowing them!
not with making grave of matters that Allah has considered trivia..
Nor, with making meaningless of matters that Allah has considered important!
But, they should look upon the guidance of Qur'an..
And they should give priority to instructions in Qur'an that were given priorities..
And the person shouldn't look for emotional matters that..
would stimulate the hearts of people..
with a way that he knows for sure it is wrong..
then they would learn Deen from him..
different from what they should learn.
The Lord of Dignity said..
We are still in our verse..
we can't move to next verse now..
because, it has a meaning that is connected with the next verses..
So, we do not want to begin it now..
till we can tell them all together, by the will of Allah, Almighty..
Allah said:
"And you had already known about those who transgressed among you concerning the sabbath, and We said to them, "Be apes, despised.". "
The Jews have glorified; Saturday..
and this Ummah is glorifying; Friday..
The prophet, SAW, said:
'We are the last nation..
[he means we come late in the time.]
.. the earliest.. the first nation at Resurrection Day.'
So, this day is the day that Allah has decreed upon nations..
and they've deviated from it..
and they've lost the way to it!
I mean; Friday.
And, at the creation of our father Adam, the creation were gathered..
as we've said at the beginning of these sessions..
and that was at the last hour of Asr, of Friday..
And, because creation were gathered [Jumaiah] at that day..
then, it was named; Jumma'a day[Friday]
and it became a glorified day for this nation, and it was glorified by our prophet, SAW, too!
And, as Jumma'a day
is the best day..
we were instructed..
during its night and its day..
to ask Allah, Salat upon the best of His creation..
May Salat and Salam be upon him.
The law of Allah always shows opposites..
and this is observable in the revelations of Qur'an and Sunnah..
the mentioning of subjects that are an opposite counterparts.
For example; Blood.. honor and chastity.. wealth.. are of the greatest prohibitions.. which are not to be transgressed.
The prophet, SAW, has told as about their opposite counterparts.. in times..
The day.. [of Arafat.. the day he was saying the Hadith]
and the month.. [of Dhul Hijjah, when he was saying the hadith]
and the city.. [ it is makkah.].
He considered them the counterparts of the three prohibited matters..
that were deeply rooted in the hearts of Arabs, at that time, as honored matters..
He mentioned these, next to three matters which are honored by Shari'a.
i.e. blood.. chastity.. and money.
He said: ' The chastity.. blood.. and money.. of each of you
are Haram.. to others..
as this day.. at this month.. at this city.. are forbidden.'
That was the saying of our prophet, SAW.
"And [recall] when Moses said to his people, "Indeed, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow.". "
".. They said, "Do you take us in ridicule?".. "
".. He said, "I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant.". "
This honored Surah was named; Surah Al-Baqarah..
because, it contained verses about the story of the cow[Al-Baqarah].
And you..
you may wonder, among yourselves..
how can this happen?!
and this Surah is one of the greatest Surahs of Qur'an..
Al-Fustat [the pavilion or the city] of Qur'an..
to be named; Surah Al-Baqarah..
And..
How could the prophet of Allah, peace be upon him....
[and he is one of prophets who had worked hard on Dawah with patience [Olw Al-Azm]].
.. begins by instructiong his people..
saying; Allah commands you to slaughter a cow?!!
This enquiry, that you have, won't last long..
once you could understand that..
these verses..
are in a site that is advanced.. so they are to be recited.. first..
but, in the context of the story, they are later in sequence..
So, after some verses, of conversation.. of dialogue..
Allah, Almighty, said:
"And [recall] when you slew a man and disputed over it.. "
".. but Allah was to bring out that which you were concealing."
This was the beginning of the story..
But, it is late in site.. to be recited at the end of the story..
and in the context of the story, it is the beginning of the story!
So, to explain this more to you..
when Bano Israel were wandering in the straying land..
at the time of their prophet Moses Bin Imran, peace be upon him..
There was a rich man..
and he had a relative, he was the only one to inherit him.
It was said that he was a young man..
and he was anxious to inherit that rich man..
But, that rich man didn't die soon..
he remained alive for a long time..
and that young man became more eager to inherit his relative..
They said, he was his uncle..
So, he killed him!
then, after killing him.. he took the body and put it..
in another place.. that belongs to other people..
at another tribe, that is different from his tribe..
then he claimed that..
he is looking for the killer of his uncle!
and he accused them!!
because, the body was found in their place..
within their area of land..
Then people quarreled..
because that tribe has denied the accusation..
So, they had a dispute!
So, they went to the prophet of Allah..
to tell him.
Before having a fight among them..
the wise people have suggested that..
Why would you fight and you have the prophet of Allah, and he is inspired, from Allah?!
So, they went to the prophet of Allah..
That was the meaning of the verse: "And [recall] when you slew a man.. "
".. and [Iddara'atum] over it.. "
i.e. each of you deny the accusation.
[Yadra'a] means; to push aside.
Allah said: "But it will [Yadra'a] punishment from her.. " 24:8
i.e. it will prevent it
".. and disputed over it, but Allah was to bring out that which you were concealing. "
[Later, we will explain this more].
So, they went to the prophet of Allah..
They asked him; O prophet of Allah..
the problem is so and so and so..
this man was found dead at the place of this tribe..
on the land that belongs to this tribe..
and they affirm that they didn't kill him.. they didn't see him..
and his family are searching for the killer!
Then, the prophet of Allah said to them:
" "Indeed, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow.". "
Hearing that, they couldn't understand the connection with their case!!
We are talking about a man who was killed..
and we want to find the killer..
then, you instruct us..
to slaughter a cow!!
And, apparently, they have the right to wonder..
Because, there is no relation..
".. They said, "Do you take us in ridicule?".. "
".. He said, "I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant.". "
and to cut the story short for you..
Allah' Almighty, had commanded them.. after some events..
to strike the slain man with part of it..
so, after they did, Allah revived him back alive..
"So, We said, "Strike the slain man with part of it.".. " i.e. with some of its flesh!
".. Thus does Allah bring the dead to life.. "
Then, the man talked and he said..
I was killed by so-and-so.
then, he returned dead!
he became dead, as he was first..
And, you know..
that, Allah, Almighty, has the control of all matters, within His Hand..
So, we have reasons and we have causes..
but the creation of connection between both of them..
is made by Allah!!
And we know that, I've explained this in previous lectures..
So, the meaning here..
Originally, there is no relation..
between some parts of a slaughtered cow.. and..
bringing life back to a dead person!!
But, Allah, Almighty, wanted to let them know, and people coming after them..
Allah, Almighty, who can bring life back to a dead person..
just by striking him with..
some parts of a dead cow!!
this is to know that the [reasons] though, they are not apparently related..
but Allah, if He wills, He can make this connection..
And, on the other hand, matters might be connected..
but, Allah, Almighty, might abolish this connection..
And, a good example of this is the fire of Ibrahim..
Because, Originally, fire is capable of burning..
But, when it had surrounded the prophet of Allah, peace be upon him..
Allah, Almighty, made it unable to cause burning..
"Allah said, "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham.". " 21:69
this is the sublime lesson of the verses!
For this reason, the greatest Surah, in Qur'an, after Al-Fatihah.. was named;
Fustat [the pavilion or the city] of Qur'an..
Allah has mentioned many topics in it..
And it is the longest Surah in Qur'an, as regards the number of verses..
And it contains the longest verse..
And it contains the greatest verse, that is Ayah; Al-Kursi..
And it contains the longest Ayah; of the loan
And it contains many commands and prohibitions and many stories, we all know about them..
Yet, it is named Surah Al-Baqarah, because the connection as we've said..
is completely irrelevant!!
So, the servant must accept the verse; "So, We said, "Strike the slain man with part of it." Thus does Allah bring the dead to life. ".. as it is!
submitting that all matters are in the Hand of Allah.
And, when a person establishes, in his heart..
the Greatness of his Lord, Almighty..
all things become easy for him!
Abu Hazim was asked..
[he was one of the former forefathers] may Allah put mercy upon him..
.. about Iblis..
He said; What is Iblis?!
Obeying him is useless..
i.e. those who obey him will not benefit from obeying him.
and disobeying him will not cause any harm.
i.e. those who disobey him will not be harmed.
So, Iblis can't harm people who disobey him..
and he can't be beneficial for those who obey him, as well!
but all the benefits, all the harm..
who can advance or delay.. who is he?
He is Allah..
All hearts shouldn't..
whatever it is..
.. put hopes on anything or anyone..
on whatever..
not even on a messenger from Allah.. not even on an Angel who is close to Allah..
nor on a ruler..
nor on a scholar..
on any servant of Allah..
on any ascetic individual.
Hearts shouldn't count on other than allah!
And as long as hearts are depending on Allah
Allah will grant them triumph..
will grant them His favor..
they will have all the bounties from their Lord.
Allah will protect His servant.. make him wins.. support him.. assist him..
And, people might think that..
Allah, Almighty, has neglected him.. abandoned him..
But, there is wisdom behind that..
behind that, there are matters that are not obvious to people..
things that a servant can see.. from his Lord, Almighty.
This is the lesson here..
in this verse..
"So, We said, "Strike the slain man with part of it." Thus does Allah bring the dead to life, and He shows you His signs that you might reason."
And, the ability of Allah, Almighty, is unlimited..
And commonly we find in Qur'an the saying..
of Allah, Almighty:
".. and He is over all things competent.". " 11:4
But, the ability of bringing dead back to life..
is one of the greatest merites that Allah, Almighty, has praised himself with it..
Allah has told us about the earth..
how it looks dead then it becomes alive.. green..
He said:
".. He who has given it life.. "
".. is the Giver of Life to the dead. Indeed.. " 4:39
No Ilah other than Him..
And you know the story of Al-'As bin Wael
He came carrying disintegrated bones in his hands..
then, he said to the prophet, SAW..
after blowing it to dust..
Do you claim that your Lord can give life to these while they are dead?
Then, Allah, Almighty, said:
"Does man not consider that We created him from a [mere] sperm-drop.. "
".. then at once he is a clear adversary?"
"And he presents for Us an example and forgets his [own] creation.. "
".. He says, "Who will give life to bones while they are disintegrated?"."
"Say, "He will give them life who produced them the first time; and He is, of all creation, Knowing.". "
"[It is] He who made for you from the green tree, fire, and then from it you ignite."
"Is not He who created the heavens and the earth Able to create the likes of them?.. "
There is only one answer for such question..
".. Yes, [it is so]; and He is the Knowing Creator."
"His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, "Be," and it is."
"So exalted is He in whose hand is the realm of all things.. "
".. and to Him you will be returned." 36:77-83
This is the overall intended meaning of the verse.
Now, lets begin interpretation..
The Lord of Dignity said:
"And [recall] when Moses said to his people.. "
".. "Indeed, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow.".. "
The action of slaughtering[Ath-Thabh] is of sheep and goats..
But, [An-Nahr] is of camels
And any word can be used about butchering cows..
and the word; [Ath-Thabh] is preferable in their case..
".. They said, "Do you take us in ridicule?" ."
We've explained before, why they were surprised at his response?
Then their prophet answered them;
".. He said, "I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant."."
i.e. it is massive ignorance..
that man may ridicule about divine matters.
a servant making rituals of Deen as an object of mockery.. I seek refuge with Allah.
of all that which are related to Deen..
as of a book..
of Qur'an or of Hadith or similar books..
of any Islamic rituals..
Such an act.. I seek refuge with Allah..
is a form of ignorance..
and it may lead the person to disbelief, may Allah forbid!
So, taking Islamic rituals lightly..
shouldn't occur to any Muslim's mind, not even for a blink of an eye.
".. He said, "I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant[Al-Jaheleen].". "
The word [Al-Jahileen] is the plural form of [Jahil]..
And the verb[Jahala] has many meanings..
[Al-Jahl] that is the opposite of knowledge.
And we have [Al-Jahl] that is the opposite of forbearance.. of tolerance.
and here the word is doubled.. [ said twice]
it does not mean; not knowing as the word itself means..
as no one would brag as having [Jahl][ not knowing]!
e.g. Amr Ibn Kulthum said;
in the last line of his Mualakah[a long poem]
'Let no one to act as [Jahil] upon us.'
' cause we will show him [Jahlan] that is more than that of [Jahileena]'.
i.e. If anyone would go to excess in aggression upon us..
in attempt to harm us..
we will punish him.. will destroy him.
and we will fight him..
that was the meaning of the line of poetry.
So, here, the meaning of the word, is not about that; which is against knowledge
As, no rational person..
would brag saying about himself; I'm ignorant!!
Also..
Not all persons who are [Jahil].. are odious..
Allah, Almighty, said in His great Book:
".. A [Jahil] [person] would think them self-sufficient because of their restraint.. " 2:273
the verse is just praising people who are keeping themselves restraint.
it is not for rebuking the [Jahileen].
Suppose you have a neighbour.. a relative.. a friend..
and this person..
was a bit poor..
but, he doesn't show that he is poor..
his condition is not expressed..
So, you didn't realize his situation, and you didn't help him..
and he didn't ask..
he doesn't look needy, the way he is dressed..
or the way he talks..
So, you have an excuse not to know about his situation.. you just [Tajhal].. didn't know..
this is not a bad thing about you..
but, this is a good thing about him.
This is the meaning of the saying of Allah: " A [Jahil] [person] would think them self-sufficient because of their restraint
The Lord of Dignity said:
".. He said, "I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant.". "
"They said, "Call upon your Lord.. "
".. to make clear to us what it is.". "
Here, they were asking; how old is it?
How did we know that they were asking about its age?
from the answer!
The answer of Moses indicates that they were asking about its age..
"They said, "Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what it is". "
".. [Moses] said, "[ Allah ] says.. "
An Angel is conveying the answers to Moses.. as revelation..
" [Moses] said, "[ Allah ] says, 'It is a cow which is neither old nor virgin, but median between that'. "
".. so do what you are commanded."."
If they just, slaughtered any cow..
the minute their prophet said to them..
"Indeed, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow."
Then the matter would have been cut short..
But..
they've acted rigorously, and they had what they've asked for!
And wise people say..
'Over inquiry is ominous!'
The rational person does not ask too many questions..
then, you may find..
something that you wouldn't like.
So, man doesn't have to investigate.. more than it is needed.
The point is..
"They said, "Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what it is." [Moses] said, "[ Allah ] says, 'It is a cow which is neither [Farid].. "
[Farid] means old.
i.e. it is not an old cow.
It is a cow.. a female animal.
yet, he didn't say; [Faridah].. [with an added letter to indicate femininity]
because, this adjective is only used for cows. as a female animal.
For example, we say; a woman that is [Hamel] [i.e. pregnant]
without adding the letter [Ta] that indicates femininity..
because, this adjective is for women, as man doesn't get pregnant.
".. 'It is a cow which is neither old nor [Bikr].. "
Originally, the opposite of [Al-Farid] is [Al-Bikr]
and it is the young one..
which is still virgin..
but, some interpreters said; It is which had a single pregnancy.
And [Al-Awan] is which had 2 pregnancies or more..
yet, it is less than being [Farid].
The word[ Bikr]..
it is best defined as; the virgin..
But, the word [Bakar]
means a camel calf.
As-Siddique, may Allah be pleased with him..
his nickname was Aba-Bakr
They call him Abu-Bakr..
and [Al-Bakr] means a young camel..
[Abu= father].. However, he didn't have a son named Bakr.. may Allah be pleased with him and please him.
Allah, Almighty, said:
".. but [Awan] between that,'
In battles.. [Al-Awan] means..
the second round of battle.. that is after the first battle..
And here, it means; being in the middle age..
".. but median between that,' so do what you are commanded.". "
So, He, peace be upon him.. has repeated the command again..
Then, they should have just obey..
and bring a cow that is median in age..
and slaughter it.. and that's it!!
But, they remained..
obstinate!!
and that was part of their nature..
"They said, "Call upon your Lord to show us what is her color".. "
".. He said, "He says, 'It is a yellow [Safra'a] cow, [Faqi'a] in color - pleasing to the observers.' "
a yellow [Safra'a] color that is [Faqi'a]..
This word; [Faqi'a]..
is a word that has settled the argument made by some scholars, saying that [Safra'a] means black in color.
But, linguistically.. Arabs..
they do not consider the word [Safra'a= yellow] as black, except for camels..
So, when we say; the camels are [Safra'a], we mean that they are black in color.
However, anywhere else, [Safra'a] means as it is.. yellow.
Another evidence.. Allah, Almighty said:
".. [Faqi'a=bright] in color.. "
and Arabs do not say a black color that is [Faqi'a=bright]..
they say; [Halik] Jet black.
and they say; [Qani] Dark red.
and they say: [Nadir] Fresh green.
and they say; [Faqi'a] Bright yellow.
".. pleasing to the observers.' "."
What is pleasing is..
the yellow color of the cow itself..
I doesn't mean that, the yellow color is a pleasing color.. anywhere.
e.g. The prophet, SAW, said:
'The best clothes are the white in color.'
Back to the verses.. ".. pleasing to the observers.' ". "
After they've known the color.. they remained obstinate!!
"They said, "Call upon your Lord.. "
".. to make clear to us what it is.. "
".. Indeed, [all] cows look alike to us. And indeed we, if Allah wills, will be guided.". "
Now, we can feel they began to have a bit of embarrassment.
At the beginning, they were obstinate, without having gentleness during the conversation..
Now, they began to show some laxness in speech..
by saying: indeed we, if Allah wills, will be guided.
At the beginning they've asked about its age and its color..
Now they are asking; whether it is working or not..
"He said, "He says, 'It is a cow neither trained to plow the earth nor to irrigate the field, one free from fault with no spot upon her.' ".."
".. They said, "Now you have come with the truth." So they slaughtered her, but they could hardly do it. "
"He said, "He says, 'It is a cow neither trained to plow the earth nor to irrigate the field.. "
This doesn't mean that it just doesn't do that.. but it doesn't do anything at all!
The meaning is that it is a wild cow..
It is not subjected.. not forced
not subjugated..
So, it isn't trained to plow the earth..
nor trained to irrigate the field.
It is not working..
not trained to do any work.
It doesn't do any of that.
And the scholars.. the narrators say:
It was owned by an orphan..
And Allah's will was to make him rich.
And this is how the will of Allah happens..
When an action was destined to happen..
it causes harm to the bawdy person..
and benefit to the righteous person..
"He said, "He says, 'It is a cow neither trained to plow the earth nor to irrigate the field, one free from fault with no spot upon her[Sheata].' "
[Al-Washi] is a color that mixes with another color..
For example..
I seek refuge with Allah for me and for you..
The gossiper.. [Al-Namam]
is a person who transmits news to initiate problems
He is an informer.. [Al-Namam]
So, if the news were transmitted as it was..
For example, Allah forbids.. a person said about you..
some bad words..
then another person transmitted it to you as it was said..
we call him [Namam].
But if he transmitted it, after adding more to it, to make it effective..
to make you hate that person..
he has changed few things and added others..
We call this person; a Slanderer.. [washi].
Because, he has added to the speech that which would increase your hatred to your pal..
".. one free from fault with no spot upon her.' ".. "
".. They said, "Now you have come with the truth.".. "
They didn't mean..
that Moses may come with the false..
impossible, and if they thought so, they would have became disbelievers..
But, they are talking about..
the cow!
Now, we have the truth..
you must think about it in relation to the cow..
They didn't mean that Moses wasn't bringing the truth from his Lord
let's say, if a prophet was told; Now, you are telling the truth!
so, was he telling false before this?
Saying like this is a disbelief.
But, they meant, now it is clear for them..
we have no excuse, now we are surrounded with evidences.
".. They said, "Now you have come with the truth." So they slaughtered her, but they could hardly do it."
and by the will of Allah, we will continue the interpretation..
next meeting..
And may Salat be upon Muhammad and his family
And [All] praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds..
