Hei!
Hello!
Welcome to tough, old women in the wild.
We are now in Lærdalsfjella,
which is part of the Nordfjella's region.
Yes.
WOBBLERS AND HIKING ATTEMPTS.
We got a tip as to how we could fish from the boat.
Yep, use wobblers.
Yep, wobblers.
Trying it out at the moment,
and tomorrow we'll
be extending out our trip.
That will be a pleasure!
A snuggle up in the bunk to start the day.
We are renting this cabin from the
Lærdal Mountain Authority.
And here we have someone else
enjoying a morning snuggle.
Tove is presently attaching a wobbler
to the line.
Time to take up the oars and head out.
Rumor has it that the fish here go for wobblers.
We'll try this out rather than using
the Trolling rig we bought.
So, this is a wobbler, Tove.
How does it function?
Well, for a start, you don't use a swivel with this,
this fella is not meant to spin.
Ok!
This crank here controls the depth,
according to the speed of the boat.
The faster the speed, the deeper it goes.
Wobblers provide a chance of hooking the fish
in several places.
Also, they are so light, they are no good for casting.
I see, you troll with them...
so they are towed along a distance from the boat.
Yes.
This'll be good.
The mountain authority
has two small boats
moored here
in Kvevatn.
We are using one of them at the moment, but
but anyone can borrow them.
Once again,
it's first come, first served.
People can bring along their own motors,
but we haven't.
We use good old muscle power.
Although it's quite possible we'll acquire some horsepower in the future ;)
Underway.
Out for a quiet wobble!
Back here...
we have a rod.
On the end of the line is a wobbler.
Now we can only to live in hope!
Kaja is rowing like crazy.
We really could do with a small motor right now.
We are now fishing with two rods.
One with a deeper seeking lure,
the other with a wobbler,
nearer the surface...
I wonder whether we should let the dogs
have a run on that island there?
....now we put to shore and release
some canine energy.
It's nice here.
Kaja and I are rowing on a massive lake.
Indeed we are...
we've covered over 3 kilometers at this point.
Yep.
This lake has actually been dammed.
If it wasn't for this type
of water development scheme in Norway,
we would never had been able
to reach these heights.
Problematic on the one hand,
beneficial on the other!
Agreed.
It enables you to drive to these areas,
despite physical ailments.
Arthritis and the like ;)
You can experience both altitude
and wilderness.
Locate huts that are free for public use
or rental cabins...
But, I advise against camper vehicles up here,
get yourself into a SUV!
Definitely.
Soon time for a bit more fishing.
Yeah!
Catching fish always adds a touch of excitement to our day.
Absolutely.
Mind you,
we quite like the occasional "dull and dreary" day either.
My goodness, that was a bite!
It seemed to be hooked,
but managed to escape.
It certainly got my attention.
Don't give any slack next time, sort of...
Should I jerk the line immediately?
Yes.
Okay.
There will be a next time...
Yes, yes, yes.
That specimen must have been around 500 grams.
You think so?
Yep.
A trout with rich, pink flesh.
We have made it to the end of the lake,
in order to reach another body of water further up.
Both of us have enjoyed this little bit of fun.
Here's the spillway,
so there's around 200 meters to go.
Tove is now on her way
up to
the other lake.
What a lovely trio you three make.
My flock!
And here we have the lake known as Steinvann.
We forgot bottle and cup today,
but water is a commodity we have plenty of.
Running water.
Marvelous.
Numerous natural sources of it.
This is our GPS.
We use it a lot in the planning stages of hikes,
as well as for navigation on the trail.
That red circular shape
indicates where we were yesterday.
The blue line shows us where we have rowed today,
the blue flags
are areas we hope to reach tomorrow.
Forward to Skavlevatnet...
the place where you can find a green fish.
The lake is actually a little too far walk,
considering the condition of Kaja's knees.
But, we have found a solution.
Something we are constantly on the lookout for.
Our plan is to row to the end of the blue there...
into Steinvann.
Then we'll walk up to
the second last flag before
Skavlevatnet.
Isn't that a good plan, Tove?
Yes!
We'll go for that strategy then!
Wake up time with coffee and Redbull
beside the cabin.
We are reminded of...
the reality of what lies behind
our gratitude to the construction crews...
that enable us reach these mountainous regions.
It's really quite impressive!
So close to the cabin wall.
What do you think Tove,
maybe we should take ourselves off to
another area for the day?
I think that might be a very good idea!
This is not the peace and quiet we both prefer.
All ready for our third day hike.
The dogs will enter today's activities.
We'll try to make our way on this path here,
to Steinvann,
where we were yesterday.
Then the march further up to Skavlevatn,
the place we've been daydreaming about.
Tove,
Yes.
What are you thinking about.
I'm just a bit lazy.
My body's been feeling a bit worn and torn lately.
I see.
Well, well. I am getting older.
He-he
You usually like to plan long walks for "tomorrow"
during the evening.
Not last night.
No.
But you came up with this idea.
Yes, this is something
we both thought of a while back.
Then I thought of bringing along the tent.
Yes.
Nope, all I want to do is to hang out at the lake,
do some fishing,
make dinner and...
Would you very much like to go Skavlevatn then??
Yep!
You do, yeah?
Yes.
Well then, we'll do just that!
Here comes Kaja,
carefully making her way over the rocks.
I'm on my way, I'm getting there!
He-he, yes indeed!
You're managing it!
On and on we plod...
and can now discern
something we've been looking at for a while.
Was it a rock or a sheep.
It turned out to be the latter, a sheep!
We have to head up here a bit further,
followed by a steep descent on other side.
Trouble ahead!
They are over there!
We've been seeing quite a few grouse.
Three of them here.
Yes, and a lovely sight they are.
We have finally reached the plateau.
Call out if you spot the lake!
Yep.
You may have to go further out here.
Over another hill.
You seldom encounter a hill by itself up here.
It's getting even rockier now.
Yes, we'll see how it goes.
This is the direction we're coming from.
Way over there.
If you see can see some water there...
We have held another War Council!
Oh yeah.
We do that now and again.
Yep.
It is SO rocky in this area.
A stone wall, in fact.
Yes, this terrain is genuinely problematic
for the dogs.
That's what I'm most concerned about.
Yep, and not entirely comfortable for me.
Ok, but walking with the leashed dogs
is also scary for me.
I think we are roughly here.
Wondered whether to
head up that, yes.
So I think we are about here.
Yes.
We thought of heading up there now
and getting some nourishment into us.
We may get a view lake from there.
That's something to look forward to.
It would be nice.
After that....we could wander back again.
I agree!
There is no joy in being in this area
with two huskies on leads.
It's well and good to have plans and dreams,
and even better to try and accomplish them.
But we hadn't counted on how rocky it is up here.
Way up there
we can discern a cairn.
It would be very cool
if we could make our way up there.
It would be wonderful.
We'll give it a try!
At least make an attempt.
A new goal to aim for.
I can see a cairn in the distance.
Is this the right direction towards it?
Yes.
Over that way?
Yep.
We'll head for that peak.
It's more than 1600 meters above sea level up there.
We'll give you the exact altitude when we reach it.
Time for a snack at 1650 meters.
Yeah.
It was a long walk to get up here.
Quite a hike.
Our original plan
would have placed us behind those rises.
We got the view we were looking for, Tove.
Yes, we attained new heights
instead of a fishing.
Spectacular view,
it provides us with an overview of the area,
as well as a reminder of how difficult it is to move
across loose rocks with the huskies.
For sure.
Also, we have had plenty of training
in the use of both map and GPS.
I'm thinking that it also looks
tempting over there,
and behind that peak there.
Always good with a new challenge!
Oh yes.
If we do venture further into this area,
we'll have to have the tent with us.
A tent would be essential.
We are no longer so very light underfoot
that we would get all that far in one day.
But, we are VERY satisfied
with the distances we can cover!
Indeed!
Part 3 of this trip is coming soon!
