NASA's InSight Mars landing: what it really took - Duration: 6:24.

- It's Monday afternoon.

I'm here at NASA's jet propulsion laboratory

because in just a few minutes, NASA is about to land

its latest probe on Mars.

- [Radio Voice] All stations assistance

we can confirm we are entry minus 20 minutes.

- Its name is InSight.

It'll be the first lander to study the interior of Mars.

We've been following this mission since it launched in May

from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

And we were actually there for the launch,

though we didn't actually see anything.

Well, there's a rocket in there somewhere.

The launch was a success.

And now, more than six months later,

we're here to see the next phase of InSight's mission begin.

But first, the probe has to get to the surface in one piece.

And landing on Mars is an incredibly intense feat.

A process that has claimed the lives of numerous robots

over the last 50 years.

So, we're here for the landing with some of the people

leading the InSight mission.

And we're all holding our breath.

InSight's mission is unlike that

of any other spacecraft we've sent to Mars.

All of our past Mars probes

have studied the planet's environment above ground.

But InSight is focused on what's underneath the surface.

It'll be listening for Marsquakes,

or whenever the planet shakes,

to determine what kind of material

makes up the red plant's mantle and core.

Each time a quake occurs, InSight will study the structure

of the seismic waves as they pass through the planet,

using that information like an ultrasound

to find out what is lurking underneath the crust.

Of course, InSight and its instruments

had to make it all the way to Mars first.

Farah Alibay is a Payload Systems Engineer for InSight,

which means all those instruments are her responsibility.

We caught up with Farah during the launch in May,

and she told us she'd be busy during InSight's long cruise.

- So during cruise, we actually prepare for landing.

So we'll do the instrument check out

to make sure everything's healthy.

But we also do things like dress rehearsals for landing

and for landing days because the first time

that you're doing a deployment,

the first time that you are taking a picture,

you don't want that to be the first time

that you've built that command and sent it.

So we actually do like full on, week-long dress rehearsals.

And then there's something called,

we sometimes have gremlins as part of the team

that will inject errors so they'll either give us false data

or they'll literally like take someone out of a room,

or say someone's sick, or feed us wrong information.

- Yeah. I want to be a NASA gremlin.

That sounds like the funnest job.

- And because I have to practice,

I don't get to be the gremlin.

- Oh, no!

Practice is key because landing on Mars is super tough.

The planet has enough atmosphere

to heat the spacecraft up during its descent to the ground,

but not enough to slow it down fully with parachutes alone.

That's why InSight was designed with a very complex

landing routine.

Equipped with a heat shield, InSight hits the atmosphere

at 12,300 miles per hour

and heats up to a peak of 2700 degrees Fahrenheit.

The air slows down the vehicle

to less than 1000 miles per hour, and at seven miles up

the spacecraft deploys a supersonic parachute

to slow it down even further.

Eventually, the lander drops away

and uses its own onboard thrusters

to land gently on the ground.

It's all very complicated and every little piece

has to go exactly right.

Fortunately, the mission team has picked a landing site

that will make things a little easier.

Ingrid Daubar is a research scientist at JPL

who helped picked where the spacecraft will touch down.

What goes into picking a landing site for this mission?

- We ended up picking the flattest, most boring place

on Mars to land.

Which isn't very exciting on the surface,

but because InSight is studying the interior of Mars,

we can kind of do that from anywhere on Mars.

We're trying to avoid anything that might interfere

with the landing sequence of the spacecraft.

So any kind of steep slope, or rock.

If the lander happened to settle, for example,

in a crater with steep walls,

it might end up tilted on its side.

That might mean that it might have trouble

deploying the solar arrays, for example.

If it was really tilted the solar arrays

would kind of hit the ground.

So that would be bad.

- But you also have picked mini landing spot,

not for InSight but for its instruments.

So explain how that works.

- Once InSight lands,

then we actually deploy the instruments

onto the surface of Mars.

And to do that, there'll be kind of a limited workspace

in front of the spacecraft where we can put them

where the arm can reach.

- The seismometer is so sensitive

that it needs to be deployed

as far away from the other machinery as possible.

Farah saw why when she tested the instrument in Colorado.

- And when we did that, all the way

at Lockheed Martin in Littleton, Colorado,

we could hear waves in the Pacific

and the Atlantic crashing.

And you could see that in the noise.

So it's incredibly sensitive.

- With all that prep in place, it's almost time for landing.

But we won't actually get to see it happen live.

There aren't any cameras on Mars, and one light signal

takes eight minutes to reach here on Earth.

Everything has to be automated.

But if all goes well, the lander will send out

an I'm OK beep when it gets to the ground.

When that happens, you'll see a lot of happy engineers.

- Standing by for parachute deploy.

600 meters.

Gravity turn, altitude 400 meters.

300 meters.

200 meters.

50 meters. Constant velocity.

17 meters.

Standing by for touchdown.

Touchdown confirmed!

(applause)

- Let's just wait and see what they saw.

There it is! Wow!

- I am so excited, also exhausted.

It's an incredible feeling.

I don't even know how to explain it, right?

It's my whole career, MarCO and InSight

were both successful.

Everything went well.

I mean I don't think I imagined it would go this well,

even in my wildest dreams.

I don't know how to describe it.

- It's definitely a feeling of extreme relief

here in the auditorium.

Everybody was dead silent right up until the end,

and when we got that confirmation of landing,

everyone just breathed a huge sigh.

We can all celebrate a new spacecraft

on the surface of Mars.

RIG BUILD 79 SERIES: Shockies & Diffs ► All 4 Adventure TV - Duration: 4:16.

An offroad weapon like this is going to need a serious suspension kit, and Jase is pumped.

What we're doing now is we're playing around and getting the suspension right.

Now the suspension is very important when it comes to a touring type of vehicle.

So I've hooked up with Superior Engineering, because look, let's face it, they deal with

EFS suspenion on a regular basis.

They sell heaps of it, and the advantage of that is they understand EFS suspension as

a product.

We know it because we've been using it for the last 10 years.

So what they've done is they've married up this new coil rear-end conversion for a 79

using the EFS X-treme heavy-duty suspension kit.

So the X-treme shock absorbers is going to be a perfect shockie to put in the back and

in the front, because they are a big bore shock absorber.

They're 45mm in the bore.

They're a twin tube design.

And basically it's this huge reservoir to handle the movement of the suspension that

we're gonna get when we're towing big loads and carrying heavy weights.

These are a good shock.

I've had a lot to do with these shock absorbers, so they don't fail.

They're one of the very few trucks that are left with live-axle and a decent carrying load.

We've just improved flexibility, a bit of load carrying, comfort.

It'll take you a lot more places.

It'll get you into and out of a lot more difficulties with a coil conversion than it will with the

old standard leafs.

By changing the track as well--because the 79 Landcruiser, it comes out with 100mm narrower

track, which is...

I don't know why they did it, but they did it.

So the rear is narrow and the front is wider.

That's a nightmare to drive.

A lot of guys hate it.

In the sand, you're actually plowing; you're not driving.

It makes it really uncomfortable when you've got a load as well.

So you're drive down sandy tracks, and the thing's like fighting you all the time.

Jumping out of the track.

All those sorts of things.

Not only that, if you leave the wheel-base or the axle where it is and you don't move

it back 300mm, the thing is an absolute dog offroad.

You're replacing the whole housing.

Yep.

And of course, you've got special, stronger axles to suit that, hey?

Yeah, absolutely.

Yeah, yeah, so in the end overall, it's gonna be a stronger rear end as well.

Massive, yeah.

Complete new rear end, but way stronger than factory.

In Jase's, we're doing a whole new housing and axle assembly which will correct the track

width and give it a bit of strength as well.

Wow, look at the size of that thing.

These are the axles.

Is that even bigger, like is that a bigger diameter, slightly bigger?

It is, and it's much harder metal as well, because it's hardened.

So it will take a lot more punishment.

So by getting rid of the rear leaf pack, so the full leaf-springs, and by extending it

300mm and putting a heavy-duty EFS suspension kit under it with the Superior Engineering

coil conversion and track widening, mate, this thing is going to be one hell of an offroad weapon.

It's pretty exciting.

We love getting good trucks in, and we like doing big jobs and good builds that are actually

going to get out there and be used.

We cater for everybody, but we get excited about trucks like this when we come in.

It's got the extended length on it.

We see them reasonably standard, but to see it when it comes in, doing all the work, and

coming out, it's pretty exciting to see that finished product and know it's actually going

to be used out there.

So now that we've made this beast drive-able and capable in an offroad situation, we're

now going to make it capable in an adventure situation.

And that is where all the canopy and all the fruit comes in.

And what better people for Jase to team up with than Norweld and Battery World.

It's gonna be good when it's finished.

Real good.

Alexandre Lacazette has admitted that he held talks with Arsenal a few years ago, and now that he's finally joined the club they're adamant that they want to keep him

Speaking over the international break, Lacazette explained that he knew he had to move on from Lyon and take the next step in his career

Arsenal came along and spoke to him about a transfer a few years ago, but it never went through

When they eventually returned in 2017, he wasted no time accepting the offer and moving to North London

"I needed the next step," he said."A few years ago I talked with Arsenal but it was not a good time

When they came (back) I was so happy and the discussion with Arsenal and the club was so quick, and with me it was so quick

" A year and a half later, Lacazette believes that he's adjusted to his new club and to the Premier League

The striker feels that Arsenal have faith in him as well, after guaranteeing they wanted to keep him in the summer

"I'm happy because I know now the league, I know my players, my teammates," he said

"The club is happy because this summer they didn't want to sell me; they told me 'we are happy to have you in the team'

The decision to keep Lacazette and continue giving him matches has worked very well so far

The striker has six goals and four assists this season, despite only making nine starts for the club

According to WhoScored's statistical analysis, no Arsenal player is performing better than the Frenchman

In the big games, Lacazette is still having a major impact, scoring against Liverpool recently

That makes it three goals and two assists against big six opposition, from six starts, plus his three goals in four games in last season's Europa League quarter and semi-final

If he keeps up this form he'll remain the first name on the teamsheet

The ASMR Tag { 25 Question Challenge } - Duration: 19:07.

Hi everyone, welcome back to eroM ASMR.

I've been tagged!

I saw these this tag game going around a couple months ago and I'm like "I want to be tagged too."

And I didn't think a small little channel would ever see the light of day and get tagged but lo and behold I did.

By GingerKitty ASMR thank you thank you very very much!

So I had to print out the questions because I used my phone to

do all the recording. My microphone setup is

distant from my computer so I can't just look at it on my computer as well so I have to

get a bit ancient here and

print them out.

So, when was the first time you experienced ASMR?

I think everybody when they say this goes back to some

class in school and mine is no different.

I can specifically remember the teacher because I kind of had a little crush on her but it was in the fifth grade and

every time she would move in close to try to teach me something (maybe I was

Intentionally getting in trouble all the time I don't remember)

but it wasn't a tingling effect it was just this calming soothing just like

relaxed feeling whenever she got close to me. Of course I didn't know what ASMR was back then I don't think anybody did

But now looking back in retrospect, yeah that was an ASMR experience. When was the first time you watched ASMR on YouTube?

It wasn't on YouTube. My friend sent me this link of this

woman doing something weird on a Twitter stream.

We were playing a game at the time and talking over discord.

He's like "dude you gotta check out this girl and what she's doing!"

Okay, he sent me the link and I started watching him. At first I was like

You know is this

She wasn't doing anything

derogative or anything sexual but she was

you know

Ladies have these I don't know foam rolls or something you can do something decorative with your hair you

wrapped it it's a bun thing she was just

Dragging it on the microphone. I'm like what is going on here. I'm like friends like isn't this insane

and at first I had to agree with him but what I didn't tell him is that I went back and I was just like

Sucked right in I was just like what is this you know I don't care what she was doing it. Was just

what is happening with me why do I feel this way why am I just

Completely entranced and can't pull away from it. There was so bizarre and that, was the first time I've ever

Encountered what ASMR was?

Just I don't remember who it

Was it was just that was identifying everything was like every all the neurons finally connected? I'm like that

fifth grade

Wow that's what this is?

What's your favorite?

unintentional ASMR video that goes back to when I was 13 and around the same time I didn't know what ASMR was but

Bob Ross I

would watch Bob Ross all the time I was 13 years old on

public broadcasting system

it's just my grandparents thought it was weird I

Was entranced I even took some art classes because of him and I have a painting that's still hanging on my wall

In my parents house that is a Bob Ross inspirational painting

So strange how things come first full circle

Name the last five ASMR artists that you watched

Ginger Kitty

Ragamuffin

Rafi taffy

ASMR rattler and I

It would be tear our hog way though I hope I didn't butcher that pronunciation

What is your favorite ASMR trigger to listen to I don't have a favorite but I have a series of I

that was a three I love to do I love to listen to tapping there's the rhythmic beat I

love to hear

somebody turn pages really calmly because that was the trigger I first experienced back in fifth grade and then I would have to say the

latest phone has been this water sloshing just

just so good

What is your least favorite trigger to listen to I

Don't really think I have a least favorite I

Mean, there are some that I I can't say I really hate any of them but

I think the ones that really ranked low are the

mouth sounds the mukbangs which

totally contradicts the Halloween one I did I can't believe I did that when I was just

I'm a well-mannered individual and just

chewing with my mouth open for the world to see was

just disgusting, I can't believe I even got through the editing it was ferocious for me I was like I

Can do it

Do you use ASMR to relax or fall asleep

Not really and that is because I have been

gifted by

my grandfather

With his incredible ability to fall asleep within minutes

he would just

bless his heart, he would sit in the recliner at night and just

Just pass right out and I'm the same way in bed usually I'm just out like a bulb

Not even funny, I don't know it's it's not fair really you know there's people who can't fall asleep and I'm like good night bye

What is my bedtime routine a couple things actually if I'm?

Just devouring a Netflix series and this is contrary to what physicians will tell you don't watch anything that you

Is gonna cause increased brain activity before you're gonna sleep well

I'll watch a Netflix video or a YouTube video if I want to

So if there's a good series that I'm watching like the house

The haunting of Hill House that was so good I couldn't stop it's like one more episode one more

Okay so it's either that or I read you I'll read a little bit on the couch and then it's just a matter of brushing

My teeth ripping the clothes off and going into bed that's it nothing too

serious

What is your favorite trigger to do I would say that is tapping?

And I think it's very unfair that girls have such a severe advantage with this with their fingernails of course I could

Kind of ran in the piece

And if I change it up to my like the bone hitting this creates a nice thud in your ears I

Feel that that is weird

Moving um I don't know

What is your least favorite trigger to do and do this to really?

Okay

Here we go again

This is in Finland this is called

doom lay

let's say chewy candy

Chocolate coating on the outside

Oh

No and now I'm chewing my muff I'm talking and I'm not open okay shut up

I'm so embarrassed

I'm not even gonna look at you when I do this

All right that's all I can take how long does it take you to make a video

Well of course that depends on what content I want to do if I'm just doing some tapping I

try my best to

Get it right the first time that way I have very little post-production editing

involved I just straight on through get it done

but I've done

I've got a video that I've

just made

Regarding sheep counting and that took a lot I I put together new paintbrush I

Made the Sheep I made the ground I made the mmm added the effects combined all those and

Each time the Sheep goes around

It gets slower

so there's 50 iterations of the same sheep going around and

every time it goes around it takes five frames longer

So I had to stretch 50 of those up

Meticulous have you ever gotten tingles

From your own videos yes

That's the egg peeling one if you turn that up nice and loud

You hear some really really

Crispy crunchy egg. Peeling it is so good

Do you watch your own videos?

only, when I'm running it through the final piece before I

I'll run it through Adobe

encode it through the media encoder and

then I have the final

product and I'll watch that through on my PC before I upload it because I want to make sure that I

haven't forgotten to edit something out and sometimes I catch myself saying good thing I did this so it's a good practice to

watch your own videos

What software do you use to edit?

Premiere Pro with Adobe and Photoshop I've just used it the longest I have a PC so it's

Well it doesn't really make any difference but it's just what I like to use what time of the day to you film

usually during the night

Because well right now it's 11 I live in an apartment building and

The quiet hours are starting at 11:00 and there is a dog

three floors up I swear to god it

howls whenever the owner leaves just all the time I think the poor thing has separation anxiety

and usually it happens in the morning around 8:00 8:30, when the owner leaves to go to work and

If the owner has to go to the grocery store or something when they get home it's just all the time and like

You realize what you're doing to me down here

What is your favorite video that you've made the

Favorite one is actually the mukbang one and that's because. I love candy I just I can eat candy all the time it's so good

Have one of your videos had an unexpected negative fan reaction

No, but that's because. I'm not very popular, yet I'm

expecting it to happen in fact I'm

Hoping it'll happen so I can't so I can stop stressing about when is it going to happen I've already lost

One subscriber and so I got that under my belt I was a bit of a blow but it happens you know

What videos of yours do you think didn't get the love it deserved?

That's probably the Lego one but only because I haven't uploaded it

Because I know that when I do upload it that is definitely not getting any love so I'm just saving myself from

that misery what's something that audience doesn't know about the behind the

scenes of your channel I recently did a a

Charity video that's in an unlisted playlist and it talks about

My son's I have three sons and two of them have a terminal disease

so that is the biggest part about my life and

I had to completely uproot my life. I moved away from the US because

the medical care there's no cure for it but the medical care was a quarter of a million dollars a year per

Kid just to receive a treatment there's no cure so it's just a treatment they don't have to do

Every single week once a week for the rest of their lives

what's the most absurd request you received from a fan I don't have many fans

And

So yeah I haven't received any absurd. Requests

Bring them on. I say let's see what happens

do your family and friends know you make ASMR videos

no only my son knows that I make the videos because he loves YouTube in that sense anyways and

I'm very comfortable around him with what I do as far as YouTube goes but I

think that many people don't

Understand what ASMR is and when they?

do see it they're like you kind of use some kind of up the beam dividual aren't you I

Don't I don't I don't want that negative feedback from my family and friends maybe when

and if my channel gets super popular and

Hundred thousand plus subscribers and I give you say like I

Did that this isn't what I do and by that time I know that things are going

In a direction that I want and I'm proud of that right now it's just like I want to save myself

Listening to people drivel on but you should, do that's kind of weird I don't want to hear that I like I

need to keep positivity in my life and I find disclose what I do on YouTube and I hear negativity in

Return, I don't want that

Have you ever been recognized in public

no

what inspires your video ideas I get a lot of inspiration from other ASMR artists and

So, I like to see what I can do with my spin on. That other times it's

What I need to do for myself to keep me sane you know I'm living in a foreign country so

Things haven't been all that rosy for me so sometimes I just need to sit down and do that myself

whether it's

messing around with a deck of cards you know shuffling them here and there and or if it's

Turning pages of a book

Tapping on something I'll sit at my desk and tap while I watch youtube videos or read blogs

Where do you find yourself spending the most time online?

YouTube and blogs easily I love to learn I

love to create

It's just we live in such a wonderful time, where we can

Sit on YouTube and I can I have a good example actually I

built an authentic Finnish sauna

using nothing but a library book in YouTube videos granted I have

woodworking background but, I was able to do that just from YouTube how to do this how to do that I

Love it. I love learning stuff. Hands-on watching other people do that and succeed at it

Being able to apply that it's wonderful

What advice would you give someone who wanted to make their own

ASMR content I don't know if I can provide much advice because I'm still learning a lot myself

whatever you do whether it's

ASMR or any video or starting a blog

Like I said I love to read and I love to learn and I love to be online

And just absorb as much as I can

Probably the most resounding and impactful thing that I've discovered is that this takes time

even if you start a blog Google will not probably rank you

For at least six months

Many, people call it the sandboxing period

where they want to see if you're worth the time and effort before they start pushing your stuff to more people and

because Google owns YouTube

I'm pretty sure they go hand-in-hand so

when you're gonna start something

sticking it for the long term at least

six months to a year before you really get any traction that is the end of the list I guess I have to tag a

few people and I had to do a little bit of homework because I wanted to make sure they haven't been tagged yet I

Think this has been going around for at least a month now

So, I want to tag Raffy taffy I don't know if he's gonna

see this and respond from such a

miniscule channel compared to his but he's been gone for

nine months now and he's back he's made a

Re-entrant and I don't think he's been tagged because everybody thought he disappeared so I'm tagging you raff get on this

I want to hear these questions I don't hear these answers I

will also tag ASMR rattler and

Ragamuffin thank you for your support

I really appreciate it love having you around and I hope I continue to inspire you and

Just have a wonderful day a wonderful life going to smile and laugh more do some good until next time bye
