I think, and maybe other people also think, that
keeping harmony is the main character of Japanese culture
You have to know that when I travel abroad
the most important thing I'm interested in is discover how people see the world
and life through different cultures and countries
So, I'm going to show you a brief interview I realized few months ago, in Japan at Nagoya University
with three people, two boys and one girl
They were really excited to make this video
in front of the camera and... No, not at all, it's a joke. First of all you have to consider
that Japanese people normally are really shy.
They don't like speaking in public especially about themselves.
Second, Japanese people are really concerned
about speaking in English because they don't speak in English well and
learning English is really difficult for them, much more than for us, absolutely
so they were really concerned about having this interview in English.
I explained to them that we, you and me, were not interested in their knowledged about
foreign language but we were very interested in knowing how they think
about specific topics that could be on their own culture or traditions.
So, at the end of the day, they accepted this interview and accepted my questions
Believe me, the question I asked to them were not simple: family, friendship, work, passions, and more
Okay guys! Here we are. Every answer is a special point of view about their
own way to think about life and values.
Yuko, Junki, Masaya, thank you. Arigatou gozaimasu
Japanese people always... sometime inhibit their thought
and feeling but Western people, I think, always express their feelings, thoughts
everything so that this is the biggest difference between the Japanese and Western
people, I think
Maybe, compared with China or Korea or these kind of cultures
maybe the Japanese respect the sense of public
and for example when the disaster happened some Chinese or Koreans are surprised that people
also care about public things even in this disastrous time like keep order
or keep care about others or something like that. That's why this public sense is an
important difference but... it also has a dark side, I think, because
sometimes people don't respect private things or private individual life right
compared with public things. And it may be a good thing, especially good for me
when I was growing up because first of all when I was a child I was not so social
And I didn't care about other people so much. But the Japanese culture
continuously teaches and I continuously feel that other people's feelings, other people's
things, are also important. We have to respect each other and I can learn
through this education or atmosphere, it depends by culture. But sometimes it's
an obstacle because sometimes Japanese people
respect armony so much and dislike other things, like stranger or other
abnormal things or not so usal things.
They sometimes dislike and stigmatize those people stigmatize
those abnormal actions or something like that. And it's like closed mind sometimes and
sometimes is an obstacle and sometimes frustrates me
Actually I live in Japan, so I feel secure
I do something same way with other people
but sometime I'm stressed by that collective way of Japan
For example someone says "you should, you should do something same
way with other people"
My name is Junki Kazama I'm a graduate
student at Nagoya University. My age is 28.
I'm Masaya Harada
Masaya is my first name, Harada is my family name
I'm a clinical psychology student, I belong to the master course of Nagoya University
My name is Yuko Sugiura
I'm a research student of Nagoya University and I'm 33
The most favorite thing of Japan, I think, are the values. We should take care of others
And communication style, for example, collective way and so
take care and we think about what can I say
Firstly I like the seasons of Japan. Spring , summer, autumn, winter there
is clear character for each of them in Japan and in spring we look at cherry
blossoms and there are enjoying and funny exciting moment for Japanese
And in summer is very hot in Japan but it's very good for swimming and also there's
very good cold food, for example like... Do you know Somen? It's the kind of noodle
Japanese noodle, and it is eaten especially in summer season and i like that
and in autumn so we have also many good food in autumn
Japanese say autumn is the season of food, season of good dishes
and... yeah... and there are many mountains and many forests in Japan
and those green turn to red and this view is so awesome for people and that's why
many Japanese go to see those mountains in autumn. And in winter is very cold but
there are many exciting events to get through that cold winter, that's why I like also winter
I can't express what I learned from my family, as values, because of
my family I can... yeah basically I can trust myself or basically I can trust others
Maybe it is what I received from my family, that sense of security
They teach you many many rules
So I can adjust to Japanese society
so it's very important to you
They give this feeling of security, for me, or support
emotionally and economically or something
After entering in university, and friends in university, it's... I did more kind of
foolish things with friends after getting involved in university. When I was a junior
high school, high school... yeah maybe... many people are very busy specially in high school
many people get involved in the club activities or get involved in studies, other things and
thay have shorter time of free time but after entering in university
we get more freedom and we get autonomy, more, compared to the younger age
That's why, maybe, friendship is more strengthened, I think
I like researcher job because I like psychology
especially clinical psychology so
studying clinical psychology and other psychologies is just very fun to me.
I have great interest in relationships
with other people and feeling of what I am
So I enjoy thinking about my interest
About my study...maybe I like that... maybe because I don't know... there are many things I don't know still
about our studies, about psychology and this kind of things. So that's why
I want to learn more
but I can't clearly say "I like this" because there are so many things I don't know
Secondly, they are not only psychology not only the study I am learning out
I'm interested in other fields also, like sociology or politics law, many things
That's why... I'm interested in many things and basically I'm interested in everything.
But sometimes I feel stressed to think, keep thinking, so I... particularly in weekend
I enjoy my hobbies. I like to play Koto. It's a Japanese traditional instrument
Strings... - String instrument? - Yes
I like riding bicycle so riding bicycle is very fun to me
Cities: Nagoya, Kyoto, Nagano. So, very different sites but...
during riding bicycle I see many many things in each area so it's very fun to me
Firstly, I will care about taxes becouse in Europe taxes are higher than in Japan
I worry about that firstly. And... I don't know about European
countries so firstly I will study more, study and study before leaving Japan
And I will say goodbye to friends, family. Maybe family really worry about me if I will leave to Europe.
I'd be very nervous if I stay in Europe because I can't speak
live there... so if I stay in Europe I don't communicate with people
In Europe... it's very interesting and stimulating for me to go to foreign countries
also maybe I will be excited but in these days European countries
maybe are facing difficulties, I think, like financial
thing and also the case of IS, More strongly people feel this such of stress,
or frustration, or scary, compered with Japan. But at the same time I want to know what
is happening right now and I want to know how people feel on the ground
- What do you think if tomorrow you have to go to Europe for on year or two or... forever? -
I feel very nervous because I'm not good in English
and always I think what I say before I say.
I'm worried to communicate with others with other language
Maybe Japanese people are shy and are not good in English
or even if they can speak English they will not speak then
because they have no confidence about
but it doesn't mean they don't like you. That's why if you are open mind
and be friendly maybe Japanese people will respond you. That's why. Trust that.
The most important thing in my life is relationship with family, peers , and
romantic partner, and teacher prof. Kenji Hiraishi. And like you, other people
like you, so relationships are very important
I think to get relationships with people, so
with a lot of relationships I feel secure
So I think... it's very difficult. - Why difficult? - Difficult because I'm finding now and
I'm searching what is the important thing in my life
but some clue is that... There is a famous foreign in Japan... I mean he's famous for Japanese.
His name is doctor Clark and there are many stories about him and many
people... There are many stories that people believe he said.
I don't know what is the right thing, what is lie, but the one of this is that he said:
"Boys be ambitious" and be ambitious not for money or selfish enhancement
Not for that fame. But you have to...
have ambitions about knowledge or justice or helping other people and finally
you have to accomplish that all men have to be what all men have to be.
For me this ambition is very important and I want to find what is my ambition or
what is that all people have to do in their life.
It's a difficult thing for me to answer this interview and to speak english
But now I do. I do!
If you think: I don't do it... but try!
- Perfect! - It's fine... after finish...
Appreciate my speech in English... sorry...
Thank you for listening my speech, my story and... message... I hope to see you
I hope to see the people around the world because I've never been to foreign countries
I'm very interested in foreign people. What they are thinking, what they feel
and I hope this opportunity, maybe, some kind of chance, that I can connect with foreign people.
All around the world. Thank you.
