*Dark Souls 3 Intro*
Wait...
This isn't dark souls
This is Brütal Legends
So DOOM came out 2016.
Same time a bunch of souls games just came out.
Including an actual souls game *kek*
So naturally after playing DS3 for 2 years, I thought I'd give it a try
Review spoiler I'm super glad I did
It's one of the biggest dick energy games I've played in a long time.
It's just phenomenal
That being said, it's not a perfect game and now that I appeased the fans I'm not afraid to rip and tear into it.
They took a great risk from updating this game from the old busted hotness
People loved to this day
and make it into the new hotness that it is now
but it avoids the garbage that most plagues modern shooters
*interactive gameplay*
The combat accompanied by the soundtrack are the biggest strengths of DOOM.
Just ask anyone and they'll tell you the soundtrack is great.
If they disagree offer them up to your pagan god cause fuck em.
There a few other shooters, even few other games in existence that can match DOOM on its level of pure power fantasy violence it lets you experience.
*in distance* makes you FEEL like Doom guy
With the healthy size of the weapon wheel
Yu really get to chose what you bring into combat
each getting 2 customizable mods so there's even more verity
Or you can just go into the battlefield with all the weapons and mods at once.
Plus the glory kill system which is a melee execute when enemies are staggered
It really rewards you being up close and personal and always being aggressive
There's a lot of people (ign™) that think the glory kill gets tedious or it's annoying
,but it's 100% optional and you can just turn it off. Turn off the highlights
I think it's just great good (<english good) violence
and it rewards a certain type of playstyle that makes the game more fun
Now there are 16 unique type of monsters. Which I would say there's 13 cause I don't count reskin stat changes.
Which you might say
"For a game about about killing demons isn't that a bit too small Necrow?"
"I mean,
I crave the slaughter of many unique creatures, the flashes of different faces and body types go through my mind whilst I let myself be enslaved to the music of death".
Which I'd respond
"Yee, not enough dudes to shoot"
Exspecially since half the demons are just fodder
which there supposed to be but,
some have no presence and they don't intimidate you or look cool
like the solider
he's iconic from the first Doom
he just looks like a generic gears of war one enemy now.
No presence on the battlefield what so ever
besides the lack of monsters (monster roster™) on the roster
and maybe a few other problems
but other then that the combat solid, effective, and addictive.
The levels are really just hit or miss in this game.
You can have big open areas with skirmishes, many paths to chose
*dunkey noises* while exploring secretes
and getting to the next objective
You can have levels which are just fight room, to fight room, to fight room.
then the levels over
Or you can have the worst, a big fight arena
be lost for ten minutes
*idiot at 300% speed*
With a shitty way point that doesn't work half the time
when you try to figure yourself out of a
bland shitty dusty area where everything looks the same (there's some lame ass levels)
Another thing that ties into the levels is the platfroming
when your out of combat and sometimes when your in combat
Now this is also hit or miss
it can just be a nice jump and stroll to the next objective or trying to find secretes
or
it can be fucking infuriating at times
especially there's many pit which mean insta death
and there's a enemy type (lost soul) that exists to just to hit you in the air to knock you out of your jump animation to kill you
then again couldn't call it souls-like without shitty platforming, am i right?!
*gasps*
are you fucking kidding me
One thing I love about this game is how not story focused it is.
There's some implications and deep lore. You can read into it.
but the story takes a backseat
right from the beginning told story doesn't matter
don't sit me down, kill demons.
and for that I respect it
A famous quote from John Carmack, co-founder of id software, is
"Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not important." 2003
and that quote holds up today
Final thoughts are that I wish there wasn't such a ending to such a cool fight that didn't get to happen cause it's a cliffhanger
Don't bother with the multiplayer it's pretty generic
it's okay I guess, it's pretty imbalanced
but still kinda good fun
game length is 7-10 hours plus another 6 if you want to get all the secrets and upgrades
for your first playthrough I highly recommend ultra-violent mode
it's just the best way to play
lastly there's tons of good reference out there so keep your eyes out, and also
FUCK YOU
8/10 I can't wait to see what they do with the next game
I heard there's invasions
holy shit
