and so to prepare ourselves
to celebrate these sacred mysteries,
the sacrament of the bread of life
and the cup of salvation,
let us ask God's forgiveness
for our sins and failings.
You who are bread for our life's journey,
Lord, have mercy.
- [Congregation] Lord, have mercy.
- You who were handed over for our sake,
Christ, have mercy.

Glory to God in the highest,

We praise you.

Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
you take away the sins of the world;

You take away the sins of the world;

the spirit of adoption as your sons and daughters

which you have promised.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son

one God forever and ever, amen.
- [Congregation] Amen.
- A reading from the first book of Kings.
Elijah went a day's journey into the desert,
until he came to a broom tree and sat beneath it.
He prayed for death saying, "This is enough, O' Lord.
"Take my life for I am no better than my fathers."
He lay down and fell asleep under the broom tree,
but then an angel touched him
and ordered him to get up and eat.
Elijah looked and there at his head was a hearth cake
and a jug of water.
After he ate and drank, he lay down again,
but the Angel of the Lord came back a second time,
touched him, and ordered,
"Get up and eat else the journey will be too long for you>."
He got up, ate, and drank.
Then strengthened by that food, he walked forty days
and forty nights to the mountain of God, Horeb.
The word of the Lord.

- The Jews murmured about Jesus because he said,
"I am the bread that came down from heaven,"
and they said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph?
"Do we not know his father and mother?
"Then how can he say,
"I have come down from heaven?"
Jesus answered and said to them,
"Stop murmuring among yourselves.
"No one can come to me unless
"the Father who sent me draw him,
"and I will raise him on the last day.
"It is written in the prophets.
"They shall all be taught by God.
"Everyone who listens to my Father
"and learns from him comes to me.
"Not that anyone has seen the Father
"except the one who is from God
"he has seen the Father.
"Amen, amen, I say to you,
"whoever believes has eternal life.
"I am the bread of life.
"Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died.
"This is the bread that comes down from heaven
"so that one may eat it and not die.
"I am the living bread that came down from heaven.
"Whoever eats this bread will live forever,
"and the bread that I will give
"is my flesh for the life of the world."
The gospel of the Lord.
- [Congregation] Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
- Sometimes, we need to hear
straight talk about important truths.
For example, God is good.
Sin is bad.
Sometimes those those simple statements
can help make us stop and realize what's important.
The miracle of the loaves and fishes with that
Jesus expected that the Israelites would recognize him,
and that they would see in that miracle
that he had something more to give.
That he not only fed thousands,
but that he indeed was the bread
that came down from Heaven.
He's trying to speak in very simple terms to them;
straightforward, "I am the bread of life.
"I am the living bread that came down from Heaven."
But the leaders they objected.
They said, "He can't be he's too ordinary.
"He's a human being.
"He's born of Joseph and Mary."
They looked to what they saw just the physical,
and didn't see beyond that.
Because of that he was just an ordinary person.
Jesus is even showing you know that
how difficult it was for them to accept him
as the Son of God, as the bread of life
even while he was with them,
how much it's going to be in the future as well
for those who are gonna have a hard time
believing in the Eucharist
because the Eucharist is something plain
and simple ordinary bread and wine.
Yet, it becomes for us the very body,
blood, soul, and divinity of Christ.
Yes, because he is the life of the world.
So, he says to them as they're murmuring,
he says, "Stop murmuring among yourselves."
Then he says, "Everyone who listens to my Father
"and learns from him comes to me."
Then he says, "And whoever believes has eternal life."
First, we must listen to the Lord and we must believe.
Remember last week we talked about
Jesus is setting the foundation,
that in order for us to accept him in the holy Eucharist,
we first and foremost have to believe
that he is the Son of God.
We have to believe.
We have to listen to the Father
as the Father continues to tell us.
Basically, what he's telling them is that these leaders
they don't listen and they don't believe
because they're stuck in the past.
They're stuck in the way that they knew things,
and that they just couldn't get out of that rut.
Because what Jesus was saying was so revolutionary
that he indeed came down from Heaven.
That was difficult for them.
So, you see without faith
Jesus was just another ordinary person,
but with faith Jesus is the Son of God.
Without faith the bread and wine
that we used in the Eucharist to become
Jesus' body, blood, and soul, and divinity
without faith the bread and wine
is simply just that, bread and wine.
But with faith we know that it is
the flesh of Jesus for the life of the world.
As Jesus said at the end of the gospel,
remember I was saying while he was with them
there was no Eucharist because he is the bread of life.
He's there.
There's no need for the Eucharist
as we celebrate because they have Jesus.
He said, "The bread that I will give."
There's the testimony right there.
This is the heart of our Eucharistic theology is here,
comes straight from the mouth of Jesus,
"The bread that I will give is my flesh
"for the life of the world."
It's not symbol.
It's not sign.
It's not a pious remembrance.
He said, "The bread that I will give is my flesh,"
and that's what we celebrate today,
and so we believe,
and because we believe,
Jesus continues to give for us.
Together we profess our faith
using the Apostle's Creed.
- [Congregation] I believe in God,
the Father Almighty creator of Heaven and Earth
and in Jesus Christ his only Son,
our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to Heaven and is seated
at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting, amen.
- The Lord who hears the cry of the poor
to him let us offer our prayers and petitions.
