Well they might be gathering wheat for prosperity but right beside the wheat field

there's this wild weed growing

cash crop in most other countries but completely ignored here in Mongolia

Well we've gone through so many ups and downs over the last week but we have

found that digging potatoes is more enjoyable than wondering if we're

seeing the last few of poor old Luckyfish's days

We'll see, we'll know in

probably 24 hours from now.

I've still got to take some measurements

That's fine. We are going to dash into town and go and get some of that mildewcide

And, it would be nice if you are here so you know how it's done.

But, if we are doing it here... you dont really have to be

I understand.

But ahhh, its just whether or not, you want to be.

Yeah. Well. We'd like to be.

That's Wayne. 40 years ago

he built this place it's about as far from both coasts of Florida as

you can get and he can put us on the hard stand where we can tie the boat down.

With a hurricane season fast approaching we figured we were in the

safest place there is.

So you reckon this might be the last

place in America like this.

Yes. You know. I think there's no question about that.

Yeah. It's remarkable. They say the people make the place but you know

here I think it's the place and the people.

That was Danny we were just talking to

and he's a Kiwi, ex-Californian now he left California he was there in

the heyday, the Golden State, the 60's and 70's and

he left when it all became over-regulated

Now he came down here he has his boat here.

But he's now frustrated with

the over-regulation that's, all across the States. And that's pretty much

why he's in .... because it's as he said the last remaining place in America where

you can do things on your boat and your outside the, all the over-regulation

and all the rest of it. It's a little bit of freedom

Look at this sign.

It's a little bit of a living history in that place

and we feel very fortunate to have found it.

Like one other guy said this morning

He'd rather be there than at some posh marina

you know, some over-regulated marina.

Hell. You know. People's human spirit is just getting sapped out of them.

Even the boaters in America are feeling it now.

So our routine when we put the boat to bed for offseason or if we have to go

away for work, putting the boat up on the hard stand it's nice to store it out

of the water being a wooden hull she's sealed in epoxy but, I just get a bit

more peace of mind if it's up on the dry rather than just sitting in the water

not being used. We spent the better part of a day wiping

down all the painted surfaces inside the boat with chlorine bleach that's proved

to be really good as a mildew retardant it kills any bugs or any foodstuffs the

bugs might like to eat on those surfaces.

certainly the times we've come back to

the boat in South Africa and Grenada it's been just like new.

We've finished bleaching the interior of the boat and now we're in the hotel room

Taking advantage of the air conditioning to dry out all of our cloth

wet weather gear, sail covers, sails ...

What have you got down there? Lot's of stuff.

Staysail. Jib. It's all there.

All that will go back into the boat tomorrow.

along with some calcium chloride crystals which will help to retard any

humidity inside the cabins absorb any moisture in there as well as mildew side

powder which we will put into each of the cabins as well

I also remove the propellers from all three outboards

flush the cooling systems with a salt remover

and run the carby''s dry

to prevent the fuel system and jets from gumming up

just give it a little bit of a rev

a little bit higher rev's

So, Zaya is just putting in some sealant

a sealing strip in the grooves on the hatches

We haven't had any trouble with the hatches leaking on passage we get a

bit of water over the foredeck not a lot over the afterdeck

we haven't had any issues with water coming in the cabins which is fantastic

but Dan, the builder of the boat, he did make these hatches with a groove so that

a sealing strip shaped like this

I could clean it next time, later, I guess

But, I dont have time for it now

This needs cleaning. The old sticky stuff.

Sure. Bit of weathering on the varnish there.

we need to touch that up soon.

No, that will be good. So how does it close. That's the trick. Is it too thick too thin or what?

No. It will close just fine.

Nice. Compressed down. Yeah.

They might need. No, they are all right you can yeah they don't need

loosening at all

No that's good so that with the

moisture I'm absorbing crystals and the mildewcide and watertight hatches or

airtight I mean these hatches are gonna be airtight now so it should be good in

there all right three more to go

what about the lazarette is that sealed?

No. This one is not.

You know these are well designed hatches they've got the umm

they've got the groove in the side here that traps any water there's a drain

hole down in the corner there so you know I mean there's very little chance

of any water coming in coming in and we're not seeing water even with spray

coming over the deck but Florida is another issue I mean we get these

torrential downpours here and we just just want to be on the safe side that

we're not going to have water coming into the cabins

Yeah. Especially when we are not here.

I dont know if this is the way to do it.

But its working for me

I'm just following my feeling you know...

It's working good.

Alright last day and one of the last job's is to pickle the water maker

sounds complicated but it's if you've ever done any brewing before you'll know

what sodium metabisulfate is and that's the stuff that they supply to

sterilize the membrane so about a third of a container let's see we've done it

once before so half of that into some water

One for luck. We will get it dissolved in here then we will dilute it down

in the big bucket. 10 litres altogether.

We are using non-chlorinated water

If we had been smart we would have got some of our water from the water maker

and put it in a 10 liter jerrican and use that to do the flush because that's

non-chlorinated water.

Once we've done this pickling it's supposed to be good for 10 months

Alright. Do you want to, go turn the main pump on..

The boats all packed away yeah a little bit of air can get through everything

All the lockers are open and everything's opened up

All bleached.

Everything bleached.

So, we will see if it survives a Floridian summer.

Now everything is done after a couple of days of hard work

preparing it for storage and then getting it back out of storage

there is alot to be said for a charter boat or a boat that works constantly

Or continuous living aboard would be the solution

Yeah. Wish we could just keep it on the water. It would be

just much easier wouldnt it?

It would.

But, I am looking forward to doing the extra boat jobs

when we come back. I think that will be the last round of

improvements to the boat. Particularly in the area of sail handling

The boat is 95% wonderful. But that last 5% is going to make

it a real dream to sail.

Atlantic hurricane season was arriving for Luckyfish

and we could not have picked a worse season to leave her

it was the costliest season ever at two

hundred and eighty billion dollars and three thousand three hundred deaths

first Harvey then Irma Maria and Nate but it was Irma that played

cat-and-mouse with us for ten days we watched helplessly as it went west and

then east then west again finally settling on a direct path for Luckyfish

We felt defeated. The consequences seemed inevitable after

finding the perfect hole far from the coast on a hard stand with the boat

stripped bare tied to a 5,000 pound steel trailer on one side and a 50-foot

semi-trailer on the other it looked like we were still going to lose the boat.

To Curtis and Danny who did all they could to save her we say thank you.

There was nothing more that could be done we went to Zayas home far in the north to help

with preparation for the winter and forget about what seemed the inevitable

[TRAIN HORN]

Well we've gone through so many ups and downs over the last week

watching the weather go in our favour go against us go in our favour. At the moment it looks like

its very much against the chances of poor old Luckyfish...

They are forecasting something like

sustained sevety knot winds with the center of the hurricane

just passing to the west near Lehigh Acres or Fort Myers area but the system

so big there's no escape so next week we don't know what our prospects are with

the boat the emotions go from thinking about it in small pieces to having it

beyond repair, to

having it break its tethers and go floating away on a storm surge from Lake Okeechobee

and really don't know what to think

Its tied down. Stripped. But....

it might take something the size of category 4

Hurricane Irma to end poor old Luckyfish's days.

We will see. We will know in probably 24 hours from now

We'll see. Wish us luck. Mmmm, pretty grim.

Excel Pivot Table Icons are Wrong - Episode 2251 - Duration: 6:04.

Hey, welcome back to the MrExcel netcast I'm Bill Jelen. Well

you know what I travel around the country doing these seminars all the

time and we talk about doing pivot tables. We'll create a little pivot table

here and I always say that when someone is brand new to pivot tables, it seems

really intimidating and one of the reasons it seems is intimidating is

because of the pivot table field list that we have here, and that if I can get

just get the keys to building 36 and their Microsoft campus for just an hour,

the first thing I'm gonna do is I'm gonna come in, I'm gonna change this word

columns and this word rows in the pivot table field list. Instead of columns, I

wanna say the field you want across the top of your report and here the word

rows is gonna say the stuff you want down the side of your report. And instead

of Sigma values, maybe the things you want to add up. All right, but here's the

other thing that's really odd about this, and this is only gonna make sense if

you've been using pivot tables for a long, long, long time. Take a really close

look at this icon here for columns. Columns means it's the fields they're

gonna go across the top of the report. That icon that you see, that icon is not

the columns icon, that icon is the icon that belongs down here in rows because

that's where the dark gray part is, and then here this icon for rows is really

the icon for columns. All right, so I keep imagining that some summer intern

built this dialog box and put the wrong icon there, and they put it there years

ago. I mean it's been wrong in Excel 2013, in Excel 2016 and everything. And this

eventually bugged me so much that I actually wrote a letter, not an email an

actual letter and I mailed it off to the Excel team and with no response, no

response at all until a couple weeks ago, when a guy in Excel team said, "Hey, Bill..."

He sent me an email. He says "Bill, I have been on sabbatical." Sabbatical? What is this? You

don't show up to work for six months? He says, "Yeah, but on sabbatical. I just got

back and your letter's here at my desk and gosh you're right, it's wrong. We'll

have to fix it." All right, now so I tell this story

because it's gonna be fixed and you know it's a good chance to get a laugh, you

know, at 11 o'clock in the morning - we've been talking about

Excel for two or three hours. And I was in Appleton, Wisconsin. Appleton,

Wisconsin, tiny little town. Here, let's take a look at Appleton. We'll figure

out what we can find out about Appleton. I'm using the card here, so it's up in

Central Wisconsin, population 74,000. I was there at a big company doing a

seminar and I made this joke again and someone in the audience says,

"Wait a second. Those icons are exactly right." and I am like

"What? What do you mean they're exactly right?" And he said, "Well, look at it.

It's not showing where the fields gonna go. This is actually a garden hose and

the garden hose for columns is spraying the data along the top of the reports

and when we take product there it's gonna spray those product labels across the

top. And this one is a garden hose pointing down, so that's why it takes the

data and points down." And I was very amused with that result because that's

crazy; that's not the way it is. And if you want proof, I know I don't need to

prove this to you, but if I come in here the field pivot table options, and go to

Display and Classic Pivot Table Layout, that's when we can actually drag fields

around the report. So, I take the product field and I come over here to drag, you

see that icon right there, the dark part is the area along the left-hand side,

where we're about to drop the field, and up here in the columns area, it's the dark

parts along the top. So, very clearly those two icons over there are reversed.

Now normally, I guess you would go to excel.uservoice.com and try and

pitch this, but it worked with a letter. And I'm starting to be convinced

that a letter is the right way to go with the Excel team because you know we

used to have this other problem, that if you had a blank cell in the middle of

your data and you created a pivot table from that... Insert pivot table, put an

existing worksheet, click OK and normally, if I would choose product and rep and

then drag sales here, we would get a count instead of a sum, but you see we're now

getting a sum. This has been broken for years and then just suddenly just got

fixed in May of 2018. You know, I sent an email out to the

Excel team. I say "Hey, you know, what's the story here?" And they say, "There's no story. We

didn't fix anything." Well, clearly you fixed something. It's

been broken forever. So, he looked again, and again someone sent a letter and the

letter said you know ,"Hey, you're treating this blank cell as if it's text, it's not

text, it's just a blank cell. You shouldn't treat the blank cells as text.

Treat it like zero, like any formula would treat that, you know, if we just had a

formula here, the point is that so it's gonna be zero. So a blank cell should be

treated as zero. And whoever it was on the Excel team that got that letter said

"Yeah, you're right. We just fixed it." So, this thing that's

been driving us crazy for years, now completely fixed. All right, so there you go,

it's Friday, thought you'd enjoy a couple of little items there. Next time

you create a pivot table or you are trying to teach someone how to create a pivot

table, just notice that those are wrong and if someone wants to know what it is...

It's just a garden hose spraying data across the top or down the right-hand

side. Thanks to Nicole in Appleton for that awesome little analogy there.

Hey rioters. My name is Vanessa Diaz and I'm a contributing editor here at book riot.

Some of you may recognize me from my work on the site and from the two

newsletters that I edit, which are in the club and audiobooks. Which you should

totally sign up for like right this second. But for those of you who don't know

me as well, I wanted to give you a little bit of insight into my bookish journey

but without giving you a full-blown ten minute dissertation with pie charts and

graphs about like life oh Vanessa. So instead I want to talk about something I

think we can all relate to and also tell you a bit about myself

via bookish impostor syndrome. So quick backstory on me is that I spent the

first 10, 12 years of my life in a completely different field. In college I

thought I wanted to be a doctor at first and then was like, "bleh, science" and

changed my major to business feeling like I could do something with that,

which is true. And so then I began my career in sales shortly thereafter and

worked in management and property management. all along feeling a little

bit unfulfilled. But in spite of a life, lifelong love affair with books and

reading and writing, I just never felt brave enough to pursue them as a career.

Something about being in my 30s though shifted all of that mess and I

finally decided to pursue it. So I've been calling myself a writer and also an

independent bookseller for about the past couple of years. This is where the

impostor syndrome kicks in. So let's talk about it. Whether you write about books,

talk about books for living, or are just you know a casual reader, I think all of

us can relate to these next like four elements of what I feel are sometimes

crippling sense of fake in the fuck. So thing number one: feeling like you aren't

reading the right authors. When I walked into that independent bookstore a couple

years ago for the first time, I was feeling real brand new. I felt like I was

finally in the industry in the world that I belonged in, that I felt at home

in. I followed all kinds of bookish, you know, blogs and websites and podcasts and

I was a voracious reader. So I'm like, this is my stuff. Like this is where I'm

meant to be. And then someone would ask me, still ask

me for a readalike to authors like Murakami to James Joyce, Wallace Stegner,

Jeanette Winterson, the list goes on. And every time people come in there I'm like,

"que?" I feel this like compulsion to walk around with a spreadsheet of the books I

have read. "Like I know I haven't read that but I have read these. See I read a

lot." Which is just so silly. Like why do we feel like we're only the right kinds

of readers if we read the right kinds of authors. There are plenty of us out there,

me included, that haven't read tons of the classics or you know authors who are

considered kind of movers of the zeitgeist. And the reality is that that's

okay. I read a lot of other stuff, the stuff that I do love I'm able to

recommend to people. And part of really being a bookseller and recommender is

also knowing how to talk about books that you've never read. So it's okay. Take

a breather. If you haven't read some big buzzy author, it's alright. Read what

you want to read. Issue number two is feeling a little bit of shame, so stupid,

about admitting that I read a lot of audiobooks. Listen, whatevs, technicality.

The fact of the matter is that if you are listening to audiobooks, you are

still spending time with that book. You are consuming the content. You are

spending a lot of time with that particular read. Just because you're

listening to it versus actually reading the words on the page doesn't make you

any less of a reader. In my personal career, having to balance working a day

job at the bookstore and then also coming home to edit these newsletters

and write these posts and getting ready to now be on a podcast and then

producing YouTube content, I have to get in my bookish content wherever I can fit

it. Sometimes it is sitting and reading a physical book on my lunch break or when

I'm in line somewhere and sometimes it's throwing the headphones in when I'm at

the gym, listening to it while I do the dishes or clean my room.

Really if audio is your jam, jam out. If it's not, that's okay too. But there

really shouldn't be any shame behind admitting that you love audiobooks. Hell

that's why all these sites like audible and Libby and my personal fave, Libro

are you know being so successful. So audiobooks are great. You don't have to

feel like you're faking it just because that's how you choose to consume your books.

Trying to take that lesson for myself. Issue number three, reason number

three that I often feel like an imposter is feeling like I'm not always reading

the right types of books. Literary fiction, I'm looking at you, bruh.

Sometimes I love a good piece of lit fic and/or a really great piece of

well researched and important nonfiction. And sometimes I just want like a really

juicy mystery. I want a cozy with an old lady who solves crimes is a tiny English

village in the middle of nowhere where there's maybe a butler in the library.

And you know what, that's fine. Sometimes I want YA, I want middle grade, I want

sci-fi. I'm new to romance. You don't have to be reading, again, the books that are

like culturally significant all the time to be considered a serious reader,

whatever the heck that even means. If you're reading content that you love

that is moving you, changing you, making you laugh, teaching you something,

fantastic. You don't have to have read the latest Pulitzer prize-winner or

National Book Award, Man booker. If you are, fantastic. But you don't have to.

I don't have to. And last but not least, feeling like I'm not reading enough

books, which again is just so silly considering everything I just told you

about how much bookish content I consume. Let me tell you about the time that I

became friends with tons of the book riot contributors on Goodreads feeling

like a baddie about the fact that I read anywhere from 50 to 75 titles a year.

In my personal circles, that is considered super impressive. Or as my brother puts,

more books and he'll read in a lifetime. But then I started looking at the number

of books that these girls were consuming in a month and it sometimes rivaled what

I was reading in a year. Some of these people apparently read like hundreds of

titles, which to be honest, looking at you Liberty Hardy, gave me a huge complex.

I'm already packing in books into like my every spare moment of the day.

And because of the fact that I have a day job that consumes a lot of my time and

have a lot of responsibilities, it's just not feasible that I'm gonna read more

than that, for me personally. Others will. Some of you may only read two books a

year and that's totally fine. The number of books

that each of us consumes has the zero to do with whether we are considered

readers. If you're reading a book, reading. That's kind of it. Again these are four

things I have to constantly remind myself of in my bookish life because

sometimes I feel like I'm faking it and how are these people paying me to do

this? But again, the end of the day, I'm doing a good job. You're doing a good job.

We're all readers and we're loving it. That's kind of all that matters.
