[Subtitles will have some mistakes] Welcome to a new episode of my answering lore questions from the comments format.
Today's question is about the Ents or Onodrim as the elves call them.
I got two questions, which I feel can be combined very well:
Mistah Bryan asked: How did Fangorn Forest start?
And Tony Gilbert asked: What happened to the Entwives?
In case you wonder: I try to pronounce names as Tolkien described it or it makes sense,
considering their origin.
So Rs are rolled in most cases.
But let's start: In the Third Age and ofc during the events
of "The Lord of the Rings" we know, that Fangorn Forest is close to Isengard between
the borders of Rohan and the Misty Mountains.
All South of Lothlórien.
But interestingly Fangorn Forest was significantly bigger in ancient times.
Elrond mentions this during his Council.
We can read in "The Lord of the Rings":
Time was when a squirrel could go from tree to tree from what is now the Shire to Dunland
west of Isengard.
In those lands I journeyed once, and many things wild and strange I knew.
If we Look at the map, this implies, that there was once a single giant Forest, that
covered Eriador and went down to Isengard, where also Fangorn Forest is.
Treebeard expands a bit on this description later in the books, quote from "The Lord
of the Rings":
Aye, aye, there was all one wood once upon a time from here to the Mountains of Lune,
and this was just the East End.
So this giant forest went from the west coast down to the east.
If we look at the map, we see that Mirkwood is not far away, so who knows, it could have
be connected to it too.
In this primal forest lived the Ents and Entwives.
Sam's uncle Halfast Gamgee tells the story, that he has seen a "tree-man" (tree-men)
in the North Moors of the Shire.
So there could be Ents outside of Fangorn Forest too.
We come later to this.
But what exactly are Ents?
To understand this we have to look at the dwarves' origin story, which I have to cut
down a bit.
A beautiful story, that I can recommend reading.
The dwarves' bodies were originally created by the Vala of Smithing, called Aulë.
A Vala is like an high angel and he's part of something similar to a god pantheon.
However Aulë could not make them sentient and independent of his will - so to say.
I imagine them like puppets in this state.
Aulë wanted to destroy the dwarves, because they were not part of the planned creation
of Eru (who is the transcendent god of Tolkien's universe).
But the latter had mercy and gave them spirits, which made them sentient.
As a result the dwarves suddenly begged for mercy, when Aulë tried to destroy them, which
he did not after that.
Still they needed to be put asleep until the Elves, the Firstborne, awoke, because this
was Eru's vision.
Aulë's wife the Vala Yavanna, who was basically something like mother nature, later asked
for a similar creation, that can be seen as a contrast to the dwarves.
She wanted Ents as tree shepherds to protect the forests from the dwarves, orcs and other
beings, who lumber the wood.
And so Eru sent spirits from afar into some of the trees and they became known as the
Ents and lived in this giant forest.
Not only there, but even in Beleriand, Middle-earth's west coast from the First Age, which was destroyed
in the War of Wrath.
Aragorn's ancestor Beren fought with them against the dwarves, who "stole" the Silmaril
from the elvish realm of his wife's father Thingol.
I talk about this story a bit in my elf lore video, if you are interested.
However in the Third Age Fangorn Forest, which is Sindarin and means "Treebeard", named
after its oldest Ent, is much smaller, so what happened?
In the Second Age during the War of Elves and Sauron, where the One Ring was created
and was about the Rings of Power and destroying the elves, the war destroyed most likely big
parts of the primal forest.
In addition the powerful men from the island and kingdom of Númenor, whose people are
also known as Dúnedain or "Westmen" established settlements in Middle-earth, transporting
wood to their island and destroying big parts of the the primal forest in the process too.
So Fangorn Forest and the other woodland regions in Eriador are what was left of the original.
In Fangorn Forest lived many Ents and Entwives.
For illustration purposes I use a picture of the Shadow of War's character Carnan, who
is a nature spirit and not an Entwive, but visually she works as a female Ent too I guess.
While the Ents wander around and care about the big trees, the Entwives are more stationary
and look after the lesser trees, flowers, vegetables and so on.
At some point in the later Second Age the Entwives left Fangorn Forest, which was probably
much bigger at this point, and went into the eastern regions, to grow their plants their.
They taught men of this region agriculture and those people honoured them greatly.
According to Treebeard in Lord of the Rings and Tolkien's letter No. 144: when at the
end of the Second Age Gondor and Arnor were established and it came to the War of the
Last Alliance, Sauron burnt down this region, where the Entwives lived, to slow down the
march of the Last Alliance.
Burnt down is a bit of an understatement.
He destroyed it with his fire.
This was so devastating, that even 3000 years later not even a single blade of green grass
was growing there.
Through this it became known as the Brown Lands.
But did all Entwives die there?
Quote from Tolkien's Letter No. 144: Some [Entwives], of course, may have fled
east, or even have become enslaved: tyrants even in such tales must have an economic and
agricultural background to their soldiers and metal-workers.
Treebeard believes they are just lost and not dead.
But to me it seems, that they are most likely dead, few captured by Sauron and forced to
grow plants to feed his armies and maybe few of them even escaped to the far east of Middle-earth,
probably still growing plants there.
Tolkien also mentions, that the surviving Entwives could be estranged from the Ents
by the terrible events they have experienced or maybe have become more anarchic.
But if you remember: the mentioned uncle of Sam has seen an Ent-like creature at the Shire's
borders and since other parts of the original giant forest still exist e.g. around the Shire,
it is possible, that some could still live in other regions of Middle-earth.
Another evidence for this is the encounter of the Hobbits with Old Man Willow in the
Old Forest, where Tom Bombadil lives.
In the Extended Edition of "The Two Towers" (film) this event was referenced in Fangorn
Forest, where Merry and Pippin are almost killed by a so called Huorn.
Huorns are most likely Ents, that became more tree-like.
Old Man Willow could be a Huorn too, so more evidence for other Ents and Ent-like entities
in other parts of the original giant forest.
I hope this answers the questions and you understand, why it made perfectly sense to
combine both of them.
Thank you for watching :)
As mentioned in other videos I'm still working in parallel on my "films from the books'
lore perspective" series and hope to finish it soon.
I would also love to talk about Blizzcon and maybe some other things happening in the gaming
industry right now, when it comes to my gaming related content.
Beyond that I will continue with this "answer lore questions from the comments" series
and maybe make another one soon.
They are fun to make.
I can also imagine to let people vote on the topic for the next question.
Also feel free to post new Tolkien related lore questions in the comment section.

press the bell icon.
Without the bell you probably won't be notified, because I only upload a few videos per month.
Not activating the bell only gives a random chance for a notifications.
So few videos result in few notifications.
I know explaining the YouTube functions at the end of videos is annoying, but people
often forget and it's also not very clear to most users.
In addition all this is very important for YouTube channels like mine.
For the next classic Lore video Tom Bombadil starts to grow on me even more.
It's however a difficult video to make and structure.
I also consider Morgoth, Sauron's Master, as topic, but that is a giant video and those
take tons of time to make.
I also always wanted to make a video about Tolkien's languages and e.g. why I pronounce
some names as I pronounce them, because often a lot of research goes into this and sometimes
it's not clear, e.g. is it Isengard or Isengard or some dwarf names.
An interesting topic in my opinion.
So is the Witchking, I always wanted to make a video about him and the Nazgûl and it's
also an often requested topic, but my list with topics is incredibly long.
So what do you think?
Leave me a comment.
Again thank you for watching and good bye.
