Hello this is Katikut
So today, I'm sharing an unexpected video, really impulsive,
I was having my breakfast
while I was navigating on my iPad.
I've found a great channel: Sara Tepes's channel *trying to prounounce her name correctly*.
She's very talented! She uses a software that I really don't know!
It's called Krita.
It was very interesting so I've been on the website,
and there, I've seen that Krita was a free, professional and open source software
which means that everybody can add and propose feature.
I wanted to try,
It was a good opportunity to discover Krita with you,
so I've jumped over my computer to make a quick video :)
So, let's see! I'll take the portable version, as for Paint Tool Sai
Knowing that Iuse Photoshop all the time. I know PTS a little bit,
I've never opened GIMP or sketcher,
For once I wanted to try something else, it looks cool :D
My download is over,
the portable version is great since you can put it on a key ans use it directly,
No need to install, if I'm right!
I put this in the folder...
I'm sorry for this sad desktop haha, I've cleaned my computer last week.
Let's launch Krita! It seems to work...
Ok, so I've downloaded the french version, I didn't know! Sorry for my anglophone friends :/
It's translated, which is great somehow,
even if I personnally prefer the english versions.I'm lost with the french photoshop!
So, a new document! I'm discovering at the same time guys!
Let's see if it's user friendly!
I would have loved to resize this thing here...
but maybe it's my fault, as I'm on a big screen, my UI is bigger.
Resolution. Let's say 300dpi,
the size doesn't really matter,
RGB, ok....
Ok! So! what do we have? A color picker here,
I already have a white background layer here,
That's great, that's what I generally need to start :P
Brush presets...
These are the basic brushes,
We'll see that later... tool preferences... mkay...
Snap... ok I guess it helps when you've got rulers etc.
What do we have in the tool bar? The black arrow as in Photoshop, the text icon,
Gradient settings, ok,
Calligraphy is certainly the version of Krita for the pen tool (?)
This is the... arh! The brush tool! :P
Line, square, circle ok...
Crop and resize tools..
Move..
Measurement tool! Hey that's great when I want to measure my sewing patterns!
I generally cheat with the selection tool, which is complicated..
But that's not interesting for what we need here :)
Ok...
The selection tool...
Selection by color! Oh great! Like the magic wand, but by color!
The curve tool..
Zoom in and out...OK!
It really looks like photoshop but without the most technical tools in the end...
It's more for drawing stuff :)
What to we ha here? We can export PDFs...
It's the same menu than usual..
Ok, display..
Oh! some little features are not translated yet!
snap to...
Snip the image? What's that?
OMG Filters... I never use them in Photoshop..
I think Iwon't use them in Krita too!
Oil painting effects... etc.
Register, Krita settings...
I think I'm going to die during this test since I use shortcuts ALLthe time...
Let's test the brushes...FYI
when I was recording this (I had to cut the video) I've restarted Krita several time since I didn't have any pressure...
It's a bit annoying..
So, what do we have when we right click?
The main tools..
Igenerally use the right click to change the size of my brush...
It will be like I have muffin instead of hands haha!
Ok! Let's try to blend! because that what interests me :D
I think that Photoshop doesn't have this feature.
Well it doesnt blend very well, maybe I'm not using the right tool.
What's the difference?
I'd like to have a little tag. Ah here it is! Basic Wet!
Ahhh it looks more like Paint tool Sai!
With some pression, I have the new color appearing, and without..
back to blue! It's great since photoshop doesn't do that.
Maybe it exists in the last version, but I haven't discovered it yet!
This one looks like a knife...this other one is very strange!
But it blends! Like if my brush was still covered with the previous color. Nice!
a basic eraser...
A softer one here.. What's this?
Back to black!
Opacity...aaaah!
Interesting!
I really like the little texture
but it's sad to see the brush borders so much.
But if the software is capable of making those little screentones it may be really really interesting!
What do we have for inking? Oh! I like this one!
To make a clean line this one is great!
Knowing that this is the basic brush pack that comes with Krita,
but I've seen that Sara has put in her videos some links to new ones.
I feel that like in PTS, there's a little lag between what I draw and what I see,
But it looks that there's a stabilizer to avoid your line from shaking.
There's an automatic smoothing also,
and this is a great feature I had already liked a lot in PTS.
This is a must to ink comics and all.
Another good one!
Not made to be used in big size. Yep, I was right!
But it's great though.
What's this? Is this a screentone tool?!
Yessss!
Screentones! So useful!
If you ever draw comics/manga, it's really great!
I think we can even cutomize them!
Not bad at all!
I'll try to draw something just after that.
Like in Photoshop I guess that I'll use only 1/4 of the tools ^^'
There are strange things...
Many tools can make interesting "accidents" I think :D
Accidents are great!
What are those. Leaves?
All of this stuff looks like the basic photoshop functions but centered on art only.
Photoshop is quite "cold" next to this kind of software.
It seems easy to put a layer in the bin, and to create a new one,
Do we have layer modes?
Where is it?
Duplicate, put it over or under another layer.. ah! Properties!
Fusion modes, multiply! Yesss! Here they are!
Screen, Lighten, saturation! great! Like in Photoshop!
You can tag them with a color to find them more easily..
Here, see, the color has changed.
Not bad at all.
Here are the gradients, some are already ready for use.
Let's try one,
it's quite intuitive :)
Here are the back/front colors,
Ooops, not sure it worked...
Let's try pink with blue!
It will be so nice haha (ironic)
Ok, it works well, it's easy.
Well! Back to my tool!
Hey, look! this is the brush customization pannel!
I won't test this today since Idon't want my video to last forever!
Let's try!
I'll give you my feedback just after!
Where do we close this?
Well, which brush to use?
Black please, it's better!
I'd love a brush with some texture pleaaase :)
How do you look if I make you smaller?
It's a bit complicated at the beginning to find YOUR brush...
those ones have a kind of fractal effect..
What gives this feeling? Inclination maybe?
Yep, that's it, the angle I make with my stylus. Krita uses inclination.
Oh! it looks like the old Paint! *nostalgic*
Pfff. Let's start with that, nevermind.
About the zooming shortcut, ctrl + and ctrl - are for zoom in and out. Great!
But I'm not a big fan of
the zoom rate...
Like in photoshop, it's stays clean only with the "*5 %*. I mean: 25, 50, 75% zoom...
If you use another zoom (33%, etc... the image will be pixellized.
Here I use 66.7, and it's not really clean.
Luckilly, the shortcuts seem to bring you most of the time at the good zoom rate.
Let's go with a face!
I can't draw a lot these days, I'm sure this is going to be ugly ^^'
For the moment I prefer Photoshop of course since I've got my habits, my brushes...
I'd like to find THE brush
when I feel comfortable because right know I don't :P
But I've been using it for only 10 minutes! Let's not complaining!
It's still more user friendly than Photoshop of course!
It wouldn't be so easy in Photoshop I think you'll agree!
Ok, I'll stop here, it's already ugly enough :P
Here's my personnal feedback:
Clearly I had the impression to use only one hand to make this thing,
It was really hard for me sinceè
I've got to many habits/shortcuts in Photoshop.
Some little things annoyed me a lot, but it's certainly because Idon't know Krita enough...
I would have loved to rotate the canvas, Idon't know where it is :P
Oh maybe it was here? No.
I'm quite sure it exists somewhere but I've missed it a lot.
What annoyed me too hat the color picker shortcut .
It's the P key, but when you use it,
you pic the new color but you have to use the B key to use the brush tool again.
Wha I like in photoshop is that you press alt, chose your color and release to go back to your previous tool, that's all.
I've lost a lot of time just because of this.
What else?
Many things but not so important.
It would have been better to take notes haha!
I think you have to find THE brush that blends like you like, because mine wasn't blending enough and it was annoying.
This was the main thing I wanted to test, because that's what I prefer in PTS.
Aso, to change your brush size, we can't really see what's happening.
When you want to change the size, you use the slider, you test, change the slider, test again...
until your are satisfied. It wasn't easy.
What else?
The layer is similar to photoshop. There's even this great function with the little padlock:
It permits to draw something (then you activate the padlock icon)
and if you ever want to work on this area only, tada! If Iremove the padlock..
it doesn't work anymore. It was really useful at the beginning for the sink.
My drawing is a kind of big fail, you've seen how it was complicated for me sometimes I think :P
But clearly, if I forget my personnal habits, for a FREE software...
I think you can make great things, like with PTS!
It allows you many things to illustrate,
and when you see how much Photoshop costs...
So I'd say, try it! If you ever go back to photoshop after this you won't be lost I think since the functions are quite similar.
Er.. what else?
I say it once again: Photoshop CS2is also available for free on adobe's website!
with the serial and all...
nothing illegal :) I've used it a lot, for 10 years!
Oh! one last thing to test. can you save and open a psd file?
This was a great thing in PTS.
Yes! it does! Let's try before shutting it dwn.
I'm so stupid, I've worked on a very small area haha!
Ok, everything looks great in Photoshop! Sometimes you can lose a layer mode or something..
Not bad at all. I've really worked like a little pig :P
This drawing is clearly weird! But nevermind! It was a test!
Sooo..yes! it's a good software to start!
Even if it was hard for me to work without my shortcuts.
It annoys only me :D
I encourage you to test it and tell me what you think!
Tell me what I've missed also, many many things for sure!
I've certainly been blind many times during this session!
As usual, thanks for your encouragments,
Don't forget to subscribe,
Don't hesitate to send me video / tips ideas to record :D
Thanks a lot and many kisses for you! See you! (and sorry for the poor translation :P)
