Why Does Hanukkah Fall on Different Dates? - Duration: 3:09.
I grew up in a bi-religious family, where my dad's family was traditionally Catholic,
and my mom's is almost Jewish enough to actually practice the religion, meaning that
I grew up celebrating Christmas AND Hanukkah (diversity is awesome!).
However, while I knew very well when the next Christmas would come, I repeatedly found myself
asking my mom when Hanukkah would come that year, because it always moves around in the
month until it hits November before moving back to new year's.
Why does this happen, though?
Well, the short answer is that Hanukkah, and other Jewish holidays, doesn't really care
about what the Gregorian calendar thinks today's date is.
That's because Hanukkah doesn't follow the Gregorian calendar, but the Hebrew calendar,
which works a bit differently from the Gregorian calendar.
You see, the Gregorian calendar is a purely solar calendar.
Months are around 30.4 days long, on average, instead of 29.5, but evenly adds up to 365-day
years, which allow the seasons to sync up with the months, but not the phases of the
moon.
The Islamic calendar works in somewhat the opposite way, having months that are 29.5
days long, on average, whilst the years are only 354 days long, meaning that the phases
of the moon match up perfectly with the months, but the seasons fall out of sync noticeably
fast.
This is why Ramadan happens at different times of the year, and why Islam doesn't have
a winter holiday, as it doesn't work when (after a few years) it's a winter holiday
in Australia.
In other words, predicting what season Muharram, 1450 will be is just as confusing as predicting
the first full moon in January, 2030.
The Hebrew calendar, like most other calendars, gets around this, as it's a lunisolar calendar.
This means that the Hebrew calendar has twelve months that have an average of 29.5 days,
and a year lasting 353/4/5 days, much like the Islamic calendar, but with one key difference:
it has a leap month every few years to keep the calendar in sync with the seasons, whilst
also keeping it in sync with the moon.
This month is Adar II, and it comes in the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 17th and 19th years
in a 19-year cycle.
The reason all of this is relevant to the original question is because, while the year
is busy moving around, deviating from the Gregorian calendar by 10-12 days per year
(and re-aligning itself), it also takes its holidays along for the ride, meaning that
Hanukkah's date varies in the Gregorian calendar, even though it always falls on the
25th day of the month of Kislev.
Of course, this is all just a matter of perspective, if we were raised on the Hebrew calendar,
but still celebrated Christmas, Christmas would probably move around in the months of
Kislev and Tevet.

Tales of the Arabian Nights Pinball Review - Duration: 2:15.
Today we're gunna look at Tales of the Arabian Nights Pinball.
Designed by John Popadiuk and released by Williams in 1996 Arabian Nights gets a virtual
emulation treatment with Farsight Studio's Pinball Arcade.
The object of the game is to collect the 7 jewels and rescue the princess.
The jewels can be collected by completing tales told by the genie.
You can also pick them up at the bizaar, which is nice because it gives casuals players a
fighting chance at completing the main game, and there's loads of features for both beginners
and experts alike.
The ramp is easy to make, and leads to an awesome swirlygigg that's fun to watch, and
switches paths between the left and right in-lanes.
There's also these spikes that come up to protect you from the outlanes if you activate
shooting star.
Pros can go for the far left lane to spell out Harem for Harem multiball.
And if you're really a master, you can battle the genie while racking up Harem jackpots
to stack your bonuses.
But let's not ignore the coolest feature on the playfield, the spinning lamp.
The lamp has two prongs that rotate in the direction you knock em, and can totally change
the direction and speed of your ball in an instant, adding variation to the table and
keeping you on your toes.
Arabian Nights strikes a good balance between simple and complex, it's always easy to start
a challenge, but the goals never interrupt gameplay because you don't need to focus on
one thing to get jewels or points.
The sound is really good, and the voices and cartoons are charming, so why does the genie
destroy Baghdad when starting multiball?
Some of the text is hard to read, but its fine once you know your way around the table.
And when you do make your way to the final battle with the genie, you get to shoot unlimited
balls with the plunger.
Overall, Tales of the Arabian Nights is a stellar pinball table, and a perfect introduction
for new players.
Did I mention that this table is free through Farsight Studio's Pinball Arcade, which you
can get on pretty much any platform.
