Yasukuni Shrine.

Now to the latest in the probe into the massive corruption scandal gripping the nation,...

A preparatory hearing was held at the Seoul Central District Court this morning... on

former Second Vice Culture Minister Kim Chong... who's accused of forcing Korea's biggest business

groups to make donations to a number of sports foundations allegedly controlled by Choi Soon-sil,

the woman at the heart of the scandal.

Kim denied the charges against him,... but his legal representatives said that judging

from a memo written by key presidential aide Ahn Jong-beom, it appears the president herself

pressured Samsung to pay millions of dollars for the sports foundations.

More specifically, Kim's lawyer stated President Park told Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman

and heir apparent Lee Jae-yong to pressure the president of Samsung Sports Business at

the group's affiliate Cheil Worldwide to make donations.

Kim's lawyer added that his client did not know about this, and that there was no reason

for Kim Chong to force Samsung in any way in favor of Choi Soon-sil.

South Korea's Special Forces are practicing some high-octane maneuvers as part of a regular

winter training exercise that's now underway in one of the coldest parts of the country.

Our Kim Hyun-bin files this report from Pyeongchang.

A platoon of Army Special Forces covertly rappels down from a helicopter into enemy

territory... and infiltrates key facilities.

Moments later a bomb explodes,... destroying the building.

On top of a mountain,...

Special Forces are in full gear, carrying more than 30 kilograms on their backs as they

ski down a steep slope.

Once the enemy is spotted, they switch into battle formation in the blink of an eye and

volley off a wave of bullets to neutralize the targets.

These exercises are part of South Korea's Special Forces winter training drills at Hwangbyeong

mountain in Gangwon-do Province.

"It's below minus 15 degrees Celsius here but the harsh conditions don't discourage

the Special Forces from completing their training."

From hand-to-hand combat to underwater infiltration,... they are all maneuvers that wouldn't look

out of place in an action movie.

"We are learning different skills, and enhancing our teamwork and minds to crush the enemy

at any cost.

We train as realistically as possible so we can become the best Special Forces in the

world."

Each battalion of South Korea's Special Forces will go through ten intense days of winter

training to better fulfill their duty of protecting the nation.

Korea's acting president vows support for domestic economy in 2017 - Duration: 0:49.

Acting President and Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn has vowed to ensure that both the

government and public sector play an active role in supporting the economy in the coming

year.

Chairing a policy meeting with economic and finance-related ministers on Thursday, Hwang

said the nation's financial system must fully mobilize its resources in anticipation of

difficult times ahead.

His remarks come as the Korean government slashed its 2017 growth forecast by zero-point-four

The Bank of Korea said in a report on Thursday it's keeping its accommodative monetary policy

because of continued low domestic consumption, a decline in construction investment and only

Facilities suspected to be missile base spotted near N. Korea's Kumchang-ri - Duration: 1:04.

Facilities suspected of being part of a secret missile base have been spotted in a mountainous

area of northwestern North Korea.

Citing analysis firm Strategic Sentinel, Voice of America reported Thursday that satellite

images taken over the past few years of an area near the Kumchang-ri region show wide

roads going in and out... and buildings that appear to be storing missiles.

The location is around 20 kilometers away from where the South Korean military pinpointed

North Korea's Musudan missile test in October.

The report says the suspected missile is the same shape and size as missile sheds used

in Iran.

This is raising new suspicions Pyongyang and Tehran could be cooperating in missile development.

But, according to a South Korean government source,... the facility does not appear to

be a missile facility and doesn't seem to be of any significant military interest.

340 N. Koreans executed since Kim Jong-un came to power: think tank - Duration: 2:07.

A new report says North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has ordered the executions of hundreds

of officials since taking power in late 2011.

Dozens of civilians have also been put to death in public this year alone.

The report also says the regime has poured hundreds of millions of dollars into nuclear

and missile tests this year.

Connie Kim reports.

Newly-released figures show North Korea has executed or purged 340 officials and citizens

over the past five years as a means to solidify leader Kim Jong-un's powerbase.

The Institute for National Security Strategy, an think tank run by South Korea's National

Intelligence Service,... says executions of officials have steadily increased since 2012,…

with some 140 high-ranking officials being purged or executed this year alone.

Among the most high-profile cases in recent years are Kim Jong-un's uncle, Jang Song-thaek,

who was executed in 2013 on charges of corruption and plotting to overthrow the government,...

and defense minister Hyon Yong-chol who was executed in 2015 for showing disloyalty to

Kim.

Public executions of North Korean citizens are also becoming more common.

The institute says more than 60 cases were recorded as of August this year, double the

annual average since Kim came to power in late 2011.

The institute also said three-hundred million U.S. dollars was funneled into conducting

two nuclear tests and more than 20 ballistic missile launches this year.

Over the past five years,... an estimated 180 million dollars has been poured into erecting

more than 450 statues of the Kim family, a key part of idolizing the dynasty.

In regards to North Korea's nuclear ambitions in 2017,... the think tank forecasts Pyongyang

will continue to legitimize its parallel nuclear and economic development.

But the next twelve months could be turbulent as the institute forecasts increased domestic

instability due to the heavy financial burden shouldered by the North Korean people.
